2 out of 5 stars What happened? I usually love Medeiros..........2006-05-01

Medeiros is one of those authors that I discovered by sheer luck. I'd never read anything by her and just happened to take a chance on one of her books when I was shopping at a used-book store. And I was really glad that I did. YOURS UNTIL DAWN kept me up reading until dawn. ONE NIGHT OF SCANDAL was equally wonderful, and I don't even like gothic novels. CHARMING THE PRINCE was also very enjoyable, though not one that made it onto my keeper shelf, like the first two Medeiros books did.

So what happened in ONCE AN ANGEL? I could have sworn that somebody else wrote this book under the author's name, because it was terrible. The heroine was one of the most immature brats I've ever come across in romance, and I've been reading romance for 13 years now. However, the heroine wasn't my biggest complaint with this book. I couldn't stand the way the story seemed to be fueled by nothing but lust. Seriously, there is absolutely nothing else between them but flying hormones. When the heroine spends the first 100 pages completely naked (except for a coat that's been loaned to her and always seems to be falling off at strategic moments), something's not right. They hate each other, yet fall into bed so fast it made my head spin. Yech.

I'm not a prude, but this was just too much. The I-hate-you-but-oh-my-gosh-you're-so-hot-I-can't-keep-my-hands-off-you-I-have-to-have-you-now theme is tired, overdone, and a stupid one in the first place. Sex is not enough of a reason for me to cheer for a couple to be together. As if that's enough to build a lifetime on. I want ROMANCE in my romance novel, not mindless lust. Is that too much to ask?

And on another negative note, the relationship between hero and heroine seemed more like father-daughter than that of lovers. Double yech.

If this had been by any other author but Medeiros, I would have only rated it one star. I will continue to read this author's books, as I have enjoyed her work in the past. I guess every writer is entitled to one "bomb" in her career, and ONCE AN ANGEL is this author's. If you're still determined to read this book, borrow it from the library first.

4 out of 5 stars It was good, but..........2005-10-30

I'll start by saying I really enjoy Medeiros' style of writing and the way she engages the reader. However, that still did not make up for a few oddities I found about this book.

For one, Justin is already going gray in the book and Emily is only 18 years old. That in itself makes the relationship seem a little questionable. Secondly, the author makes several references to Justin being a parental figure and Emily being a child. Not quite the imagery I want when reading a romance.

The good thing is that while the reader is questioning this odd relationship, so is the couple. And through the course of the book it's easy to understand how they fall in love. The age difference and him being her guardian seems much more trivial towards the end. I also loved how long it took them to get together because by the time they finally give into their feelings I too was rooting for them.

If you can get over some of the circumstances surrounding their relationship, then this is an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST LOVE STORY EVER!!!!!!.......2004-10-15

I have to say this is not my best author, but the last 3 books I've read just keep getting better & BETTER!!!.. I love Julia Quinn and other regency romanc authors, but none of their books could beat this ONE BY FAR! I NEVER wanted this book to end. A love story from the start. It was soooo sad and yet captivating with soooo much Passion and Love with the characters. Emily had such a horrible 7 years of Hell, but I would gladly go through what she did, to finally end up with a Love that can only truly be blessed from the HEAVENS above. That person who wrote the review about this story being sick and about a daddy. Well I can asure you the author did maintain a lot of dignity with this book. Besides you pay attention to the book you'll notice that Justin was younger than Emily's father. If the father was 20yrs older than her and justin about 5 or 6, then that would mean he's only 14 or 15 yrs older. I know a lot of women who are married to older men including my mother. I TRULY LOVE THIS BOOK!. I'm just sad that now I have to look for a book to even try to hold it's own to this one. Out of all the books I've ever read in my lifetime and that's been a LOT. This was is my FAVORITE!! I would gladly pay literally $100 dollars for a book that only cost me 4 bucks!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Three stars, but just barely.......2004-05-31

Like most readers, I rather liked Justin, although he sometimes seemed undependable (he had promised her father to take care of her) and a bit wimpy. His musical talent was a delightful characteristic. It seemed odd, however, that he found it so easy to adjust to being a Duke after so many years in New Zealand. Emily is often annoying; she has spirit and strength, but she is immature and mercurial. Their relationship did sometimes have moments of unseemliness, of "ickiness."

The book started well, but dragged later on. The ending left far too many questions still unanswered. As a whole, unsatisfactory. Only Medeiros' ability to write beautifully, to evoke emotion, and to effectively evoke a setting raises this attempt to a three-star level. For plot and characters alone, it's only 2 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Daddy???.......2004-04-02

I have loved every book I've read by Medeiros, but this one just didn't sweep me away. It seemed to lack her usual humor and I found the characters to be rather stilted and tiresome (not to mention annoying - as in Emily being a girlish brat!). I felt sorry for poor old Justin. The book bordered on being "sick" in that whole "daddy" way. I mean, come on, if Justin had gone back to fetch Emily right away when she was a child, he certainly would have been more "fatherly" to his ward and probably would not have bedded her when she was of age! (But then we wouldn't have a book, either.) I actually love romances between an older, graying man and a younger woman, but this seemed to push the envelope a little.

5 out of 5 stars A History; though the eyes of the players!.......2007-10-02

This is a wonderful book; staring with the beginning and going all they way through till the present day. The forward is written by Nolan Ryan; my favorite Player of all time; I have such vivid memories of Ryan on the Angels, from His 4th No Hitter against the Baltimore Orioles on June 1st 1975 angels 1 Baltimore 0), which I listened to on a bright and sunny Saturday on KMPC 710 AM in cali with Dick Enburg and Don Drysdale announcing; to his near no hitters, to all the strikeouts, to the 79 Playoff game; what great excitement. I was so sorry to see the Angels make a big mistake and let him go to Houston. I also enjoyed the introduction; where Goldman talks to Leroy Stanton. What memories this all brings back. I have been an Angels fan for a long long time and the first game that I got to go to was early in the 1975 season, It was against the White Sox and Leroy Stanton Hit a Walk off game Winning Home run in the 10th and the (California) Angel's won 4-3. I can still remember the starting line up that day some of whom were; Dave Chalk, Joe Lahoud, Jerry Remy (Rem-dog), John Balaz, Rudy Maeoli, Elli Rodriguez, Mickey Rivers, Morris Nettles, Dick Lange and Tommy Harper. What Winsome and Wonderful memories. The Book is centered around 10 interviews with 10 great Angles players; Rod Carew, Jim Fregosi, Don Baylor, Nolan Ryan, Dean Chance, Albie Pearson, Alex Johnson, Reggie Jackson, and Jim Abbott; and about there individual Angels teams the personality's on those teams on and off the filed. Goodman covers there whole History from the beginnings to today and he does it though the players, coaches, and fans eyes. He really centers on there character and what Characters some of them were and are. Some of this history I know, but I am leaning so much I did not know and am grateful for the education. Goodman, who was a bat boy for the Angels in the mid 70's, has done a great job hear, he covers the good, bad and the ugly and the championship (2002) and this is a MUST READ for every angels fan.

5 out of 5 stars This book is AWESOME!!!.......2006-10-27

I found this book in the middle of nowhere at Barnes & Noble and I am SO glad that I found it. This might be the best book I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at an up-and-down history-.......2006-09-18

This book covers the history of the Angels from the earliest days at Wrigley Field in West Los Angeles to the world championship team of 2002 and beyond. Lots of memories, not just from the main interviews with Angel greats like Carew, Abbott and Fregosi, but with the lesser known players that make the history really come alive. If you like the Angels, this book is a definite must. Reading this brought back a lot of memories of sitting in the cheap seats ($2.00 general admission!) for the '79 division championship. Jimmie Reese will never die!!

4 out of 5 stars Attention all Angels Fans - You must buy this book!.......2006-06-18

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Goldman at the annual PCL Reunion show last month and purchased this book for a friend who is a lifelong Angels fan. As I looked over the book that weekend, my only regret was not buying a signed copy for myself.

This is one outstanding book and a must-have if you're an Angels fan. The anecdotes and interviews from former Angels past and present are all here and include names such as Bo Belinsky, Dean Chance, Jim Fregosi, Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, etc. All in all, this is one helluva great read.

5 out of 5 stars Baseball Fans - Buy This Book!.......2006-04-13

This is like no other baseball book I've ever read in my life. Whether you're an Angels fans or just a baseball junky like me, you'll love reading this book. It's written from the point of view of some of the greatest players of the game and will give you unique insights about what it was really like to be a member of the Angels - from the club's expansion year until they became world champions in 2002. I read this book over a weekend and was really impressed by Mr. Goldman's excellent writing and the specific, never before told details about each player's special contributions to the game and to life. If you're a fan of baseball, how can you NOT be interested in knowing more than the usual 15 second soundbites on Sportscenter about Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson or Nolan Ryan? If you're looking at buying a baseball book stop your search right now and pick up a copy of Once They Were Angels. It's a must read for true fans of America's pastime. You'll love it, just like I did!

1 out of 5 stars "Once Bitten" Falls Flat.......2006-01-16

While I don't really enjoy criticizing another's work when I can't write a book myself, this book deserves reviewing. I have not read the book "Bite Me" also by this author, but judging by this volume, I won't.
If you enjoy being irritated with a book you, as a reader, spent roughly $15.00- $20.00 on, please, go forth and buy this book; if not, spend your hard earned cash elsewhere ("Angel: The Casefiles" might be a better choice).
The first irritation of this book is although it is "supposed" to be about "Angel," Stafford seems to be writing a sequel to "Bite Me;" she talks about Buffy more than Angel. Don't get me wrong, I'm personally an avid fan of both shows. However, "Angel," whilst being a spin-off, stood on it's own two feet, following "Buffy"s storyline minimally, and Stafford attempts to make parallels between the two shows that just aren't there. It becomes a fly in the reader's ear after a while.
The second major irritation in this book are the menial episode summaries. Having seen every "Angel" episode, at least once, I know the basic plot of each episode and only need a refresher. However, Stafford leaves out MAJOR plot points. If one was trying to find a certain episode he/she missed, one may get a "ballpark" idea of which episode he/she i looking for, especially in Season 4, when the season is basically one long story arc, and if you miss one episode, you're clueless and confused. In my opinion, a plot summary should be like a Cliff's Notes version of the episode, and Stafford only writes about PART of an episode, usually the part I'm figuring that she find pleasing.
And finally, the last bit of annoyance... Nitpicks. Almost anyone who has read this book does not like the "Nitpick" section. I honestly don't want to know someone else's opinion of an episode, or a character's outfit in a certain episode, or any other gripe the author may have about the show; If Stafford like the show so much that she wrote about about it, why does she feel the need to gripe about it? And I apologize, but some of the comments she makes are crude, tactless, and seem uneducated, case in point sayin that Cordelia's outfit at the end of "Orpheus" (Season 4, episode 15) looks like it was bought at, and I quote, "Bondage Maternity Clothes R Us" is absolutely tasteless.
Of course the are a few shining lights within this dreary book: there is a humorous interveiw with Alexis Denisof (Wesley Wyndam-Pryce), It's humorous because the actor is witty, not the author; and there are a few little "jewels" throughout the book: a chronology of appearances by Phantom Dennis, and a Complete "Angel" timeline, pre and post Buffy. These few random lights are the only reason why this book gets ANY stars, in my opinion.
Stafford's sophomore effort just falls flat in this reader's eyes. If you MUST read it, rent it from your Library.

5 out of 5 stars Got Lots Of Bite.......2004-12-04

Another year, and another companion book to the Buffy/Angel/Joss Whedon universe. But when they are as good, fun, and interesting as Nikki Stafford's book on the subject are, they are a most welcomed treat. When she released the Buffy book, "Bite Me", a few years back, it was a refreshing read since it was from a fan. It was well written and researched, and although I had some questions with some of her ongoing nitpicks, it was a fantastic book. The problems I had with it?. Basically, season 4. Most fans were turned off and grossed out with the Cordelia/Connor thing, and the stuff Cordelia did. And Stafford even keeps referring to it as being Cordelia. The thing is, it is not Cordelia. She isn't doing these things. Charisma didn't change everything she built for the character as Stafford writes, because this is a whole other person using her. People didn't distiguish the two, and I think it made for some of the fabulous, brilliant stuff that season 4 had going for it to be overlooked and not given the proper treatment. This wasn't Cordelia. If the real Cordelia had heard of what happened, she would of been just as grossed out as everyone else. Probably even more so. Stafford keeps up the momentum with this latest release on the history and series run of Buffy's sister show, "Angel". Stafford keeps the fun and interest high all through the well made book, and her own personal thoughts and nitpicks are still there, and while some may annoy some people, are still interesting and fun to read. They are also not important enough to give a low grade to this book. That's forgetting the great stuff inside and giving it a low mark because you don't like the cover. The recent "Watcher's Guide Vol. 3" was such a disappointing affair, that it makes one happy for a Whedonverse book like this one to come along. Stafford keeps things fresh and makes it very clear in the beginning that she is not going to re-hash what she had already written about Angel in the "Bite Me" book, and she doesn't. Her writing is well rounded and easy to read, where some more scholary type publications can get a little over done. To please even more readers and fans, and to tie up loose ends, she has also included the seventh and final season of "Buffy" at the end of book as well. What also makes this book a better deal is that she includes season 5 of "Angel". The recently released "Angel Casefiles Vol. 2" only goes to season 4. What's that about?. The book has very long, in detail synopses and thoughts of all 110 episodes of the show over it's 5 season run. Every section comes with a few little different categories too. Just like the "Bite Me" book. She has "Highlight", which as you probably know, tells what she thought was the high point of that particular episode. There is "Interesting Facts", which you can pretty much guess on your own. "Did You Notice?" is a section where she tells things that one may have not noticed or really picked up on. The infamous "Nitpick" section I already mentioned. "The Buffy Connection" is a section that tells if a certain episode or moment or part of a story in that episode has ties with something from "Buffy". There is also a "Woops" part that details bloopers and all that. It's all very well researched and startingly crafted. If that isn't enough, she has sections on the 2003 Posting Board party, "Angel" and "Buffy" on the web, some trivia, an interview with Alexis Denisoff(Wesley), the story of Angel, some nice color photos, and a section on Buffy in the academia world. Stafford delivers another fine book on the subject that is nothing but pure fun and enjoyment from start to finish. Even though it's not "Buffy", it is everything that "Watcher's Guide 3" should have been. The world and stories of "Angel" was a marvelous, brilliant place, and Stafford keeps the glory of the show alive with this fine book. One wonders what she will give us next, while at the time it's sad that the Buffy/Angel world is over and we won't get another fine book on the two from her. Oh well. Read and enjoy, because the book is every bit as good as "Bite Me". Well done.

2 out of 5 stars Twice Shy.......2004-11-22

While this episode guide isn't terrible, it is often quite irritating. Whereas in Stafford's Buffy guide, Bite Me, her nitpicks are often justified and her commentary is insightful and eloquent, most of the commentary and nitpicks in this guide are not. For example, in her nitpicks about the season one episode "Parting Gifts," Stafford goes off on a tirade about how Barney is an empath demon but does not look like Lorne. This complaint was completely mind-boggling to me, since it seems really naive to assume that all demons with empathic abilities must be from Pylea. Another one of her inane nitpicks based on assumptions about demons is in the season one episode "The Bachelor Party" where she complains that divorce would not have been part of ancient rituals since it was not common a long time ago. I thought we established a long time ago that humans and demons have different rituals. <rolling eyes> Nevertheless, this guide isn't horrible and can at times be very entertaining. Just don't expect it be as good as Bite Me.

    5 out of 5 stars An action-packed historical romance........2002-06-01

After their parents and younger brother were killed in the Seven Years War, and their English village attacked, Grace Fisk and her older sisters, Morgan and Joanna, turned to pirating. But things have since quieted down. Morgan and Jo have both married noblemen. Grace, who longs for security, is sailing to the Massachusetts Colony to be married. Although she does not love her fiance, Grace knows he can give her the life she has always longed for. But the ship she sails on is attacked by pirates, led by Jackson Brodie, the only man Grace has ever loved. But she knows they can never be together -- he can never give her a peaceful, safe life. But her heart tells her otherwise: that he is the only man she can ever be happy with. When she arrives in America, Grace finds her fiance is not what he seemed. This was an action-packed historical romance that I truly enjoyed. I can't wait to read the other two books in the Jewels of the Sea trilogy.

    4 out of 5 stars Good sea-going fare........2001-07-22

The youngest Fisk sister finds happiness in Once an Angel. Grace Fisk wants two things: to be a lady, and to escape the scandal of her piratical past. To this end, she goes to a ladies' finishing school and becomes engaged to a viscount who lives in the colony of Massachusetts. Along with a classmate, she travels by ship to the colonies. Unfortunately, she has the bad luck to be on a ship carrying weapons to aid the British in the war against the Colonies. The ship is captured by a ship working for the Colonies. To Grace's horror, the captain is none other than Jackson Brodie! Grace has loved Jackson since she was a child but gave up on him when she realized he would always court danger on the high seas. Her attraction never died, though. He finally agrees to take her to her fiancé in Medford, Massachusetts. They arrive there to find a colony torn apart by the high passions of war, and her fiancé is in the thick of it. Jackson realizes quickly that her fiancé is big trouble. Grace fights that realization herself, for she doesn't want to let go of her dream of aristocratic life. It soon becomes clear that to keep Grace out of danger, Jackson is going to have to remove her from the scene himself. The "Jewels of the Sea" trilogy comes to a satisfying conclusion in this Revolutionary War adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Nonstop action and romantic tension.......2001-06-27

Grace Fisk, youngest of the pirate sisters, has always wanted peace and a place in society. Her engagement to Lord William Mason provides this, and she's sure that she can put her love for Jackson out of her mind. When Jackson's pirate crew captures her ship, all the bets are off and the action goes non-stop.

Between storm, pirate attacks, the outbreak of the American revolution, treachery, and midnight raids, author Tammy Hilz turns up the pressure and never lets it up. Hilz does an excellent job integrating romantic tension with adventure, allowing Grace to grow as she confronts life-threatening obstacles.

In some ways, writing peaceful and needy Grace must have been hard, but Hilz delivers. ONCE AN ANGEL may be the best in this fine series.

5 out of 5 stars Spirited and exhilarating -- Very highly recommended.......2001-06-19

Eight years ago when the Fisk pirates were rescued from certain hanging, Grace vowed to leave pirating behind. She never wanted to walk the decks of the Sea Queen again; she did want a respectable husband who could provide handsomely for herself and the children they would one day have together.

When Grace won the attention of William Mason, she considered him the epitome of nobility. His blue blood and patrician nose were enough to assure that her dreams would come true. Never mind that they weren't in love; they were both bringing things of value to the marriage. She brought a hefty dowry and connections while he provided security and respectability. They like each other, and, with luck, in time their regard might grow into love. Leaving London behind, Grace boards the Maiden Fair bound for America and her fiancé, hoping to never again have to travel the oceans. But destiny has other ideas.

Pirates board the Maiden Fair, learning she was part of a plan to blockade the colonies. A terrible storm wrecks the ship, however, and her cargo, passengers and crew are put aboard the rechristened Sea Angel. Her captain, Jackson Brodie hasn't seen Grace in five years, but he's always carried deeply for the girl, even when she followed him around as a child like a guardian angel -- hence his nickname for her, Angel. He's not prepared for his attraction to her as a woman, nor does he wish to see her married, especially to a man with British sympathies. Further, he refuses to leave her in America during a time of war. Consequently, their clashes are inevitable. So is their inability to fight their mutual desire.

A rousing conclusion to the Jewels of the Sea trilogy, ONCE AN ANGEL boldly completes the quest for love and destiny. Grace Fisk, the youngest sister and the one who wishes to distance herself furthest from her pirating past, must learn to accept not only who she once was, but who her true love is. Further, she must learn where to place her loyalties, and to respect the need for force in its time and place. Together, Grace and Jackson prove themselves to be strong as their passion rages as intently as the war around them, powerful, and memorable characters. Spirited and exhilarating, ONCE AN ANGEL comes very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Treasured Horses Book!.......2000-03-25

I LOVE this book! It taught me about vaulting, a horse sport I had never heard of before. In the book, Adala loses her confidence after taking a spill. Will she get it back and decide to rejoin the team? Read the book and find out! Also read A Horse for Hannah, Lousiana Blue, and Rush for Gold, all books by the same auther. They are also wonderful!

    Book Description

Light from Heaven is not like other books. It is not the product of its authors' inspiration. It is quite literally the product of collaboration between heaven and earth. All of it is true. Even if you are unable to ascertain this today, you will certainly change your mind tomorrow, even if "tomorrow" comes centuries from now.

The book is written like a sermon and divided into chapters based on who is speaking or who began the message. There are messages from God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Apostles and others. God, indeed, still speaks to us. Now if we have stopped listening, that is quite another matter.

Jesus Christ: "Help your brothers who are living in the darkness and need your help. You who are intelligent beings, help them, give them a helping hand. Enlighten them. You will immediately become one of My Apostles as soon as you help a man or woman, or a plant or an animal or a stone. For even picking up a stone and placing it in your own space is much better than throwing it away where it does not belong. Place everything where it belongs. Clean up this planet. Respect the fruits of the labors of others."
