3 out of 5 stars Pleasant reading.......2007-05-08

This is not great, but it's a nice romance novel. The characters are interesting and likeable. Bad guys create the conflicts. Sexual content: moderate.

5 out of 5 stars One of her best.......2007-02-18

I just re-read this book for the gazillionth time and decided that I need to write a review! Faithful readers of Amanda Quick know that she has her own certain style and some find her newer books a bit of a bore. I, myself never thought that. But this book is a classic! It never gets old. I love the transformation of the "Beast" and all thanks to his not-so-typical "Beauty".

5 out of 5 stars More Stars Please . . .........2007-01-31

This is one of my favorites by Amanda Quick. Though this is my third time reading Ravished, I enjoyed it as much if not more than the first time. The hero and heroine are lovable, well-rounded and memorable. The supporting characters are also full of life and believable. There's lots of action. Oh, and I can't forget to add that I found it hilarious.

The Plot
Harriet summons Gideon Westbrook, the Viscount St. Justin to Upper Biddleton to catch a ring of thieves using his caves to hide their stolen goods. After Harriet and Gideon are forced to spend a night together in the caves, her honor is hopelessly compromised. Gideon offers to marry Harriet, but gossip has it that he has compromised a woman before and then cast her aside.

5 out of 5 stars Stand By Your Man -even if he happens to be a hideously scarred beast.......2006-08-02

Harriet, vicar's daughter and fossil enthusiast discovers that thieves have been using 'her' caves for stashing stolen goods. Summoning the notorious Beast of Blackthorne Hall, Gideon, was the only logical thing to do. They're his lands of course. Harriet encounters the surley and battered Gideon and hatches a plan to get rid of the theives from her prescious fossil caves asap. Gideon is stunned to find a woman, who by all accounts is not intimidated by him nor disgusted by his appearance. After hearing all the rumors about Gideon and his reputation of ravaging females, getting them pregnant and abandoning them, Harriet is relieved to find not a beast, but a gentleman. She decides to make her own opinions of him and she is the first to have faith in him. A beautiful love story insues.

I really loved this book, a keeper for me. The way that Harriet stands by Gideon, even when she should be running for the hills, is very heart warming. She doesn't back down once and defends him to everyone -a real champion (a first for him). Harriet shows that Gideon is a true man of honor. Yeah, the fossil stuff is a bit toooo much, but that's just her quirky personality.

A really good regency. I also recommend, Mystique by Quick and authors Quinn, Kleypas, D'Alessandro, Maxwell (early works) and Garwood.

3 out of 5 stars *** Three & a Half Stars ***.......2006-07-07

This story is about a woman (Harriet) who works with fossils and learns thieves have been hiding out in the caves she frequents. She summons Viscount St. Justin (Gideon) to chase them away. Gideon's scarred face, brawny build and reputation as a murderer create a monstrous character. Like Harriet, the reader quickly learns that Gideon is every inch a gentleman. He may not be handsome, but he has every other grand attribute in three-fold. You will truly fall in love with his character.

Although predictable at times, this was a sweet romance about two ordinary but peculiar looking people. This was my first Amanda Quick novel and I would not hesitate to buy another one.

    1 out of 5 stars Lacking.......2007-07-29

I can honestly say that this is one of the worst regency novel I have read. I read the back and thought 'wow, this looks like a great read' but I can't stand to read it, I have to keep putting it down and then hoping when I pick it up again it will have gotten better.I agree with other reviewers that I think that the plot was not plausible for this time period, and the continual mistaken identity by everyone even the heroine is just annoying. I did enjoy the beginning of the book and there are some endearing moments between the brothers (before Kit becomes evil) and also the slash backs of when they were children. The Grandmother is very eccentric and its hilarious! There are some historical facts about the time period such as those relating to the lower classes such as chimney sweeps and prostitution and the lack of food which are true but the facts relating to the siege of Pamplona are not, the battle finished in July, it was not because of gun powder barrels and the 'enemy' was not stationed in a strong hold.
I have also read in the reviews that this book for some is not up to par but the author has other books that are good...I hope that that is true, although I don't think that I am up to the task of finding out just yet.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 STARS Loved half of the story, bored with the other half. Good character and scenery development kept the story moving........2006-06-29

The base romance in this novel was terrific. Unfortunately it was cut- in by a lot of side topics that had nothing to do with the main couple. I'd say they could have cut out about 1/2 of the pages and it would have been a perfect story.

Alex, the heroine, spends a lot of time dressed as a man in an effort to learn about the seedy side of London. These pages were pretty boring. I skimmed through them a lot.

Nick, the hero, joins the army about 1/3 of the way though the book. Part of this topic was intense and endearing, such as a point where he is trying to swim upstream in a raging river and he uses his memories of Alex as his means of strength to make it across. Other parts were boring facts about the war that had no significance for the main characters.

The love between the main couple is beautiful, but unfortunately we don't get to enjoy it much. There are only a few pages out of the whole book where the two of them are happily together. Still, their devotion keeps you going.

    The Basic Story:

Alexandra and her brother Rupert grew up as best friends with the kids in the plantation next to their own. Those kids were twin brothers, Christopher and Nicholas. Growing up with three boys made Alex a tomboy. She wanted to do everything the boys could do. Now as a 17 year old, she wants all of the same privileges the men have. Most of all, she wants to be a writer. Because women are not respected in the literary field, Alex starts dressing as a man. She uses her disguises to gain access to the many "gentleman's clubs" in London. These clubs will provide her with information for her newspaper articles.

Alex and Rupert were raised by their grandmother. The twins, by their dad. Alex's grandma and the twins dad have arranged a marriage between Alex and the older twin, Christopher. However Alex is deeply in love with Nicholas, the younger twin. Nick loves her back, but wants her to have the family title and lands that will be inherited by his brother. Nick feels he will be robbing her of those things if he marries her himself. In an effort to put distance between them, Nick joins the army.

Over the next year, Nick fights for his country while Alex works to prevent her grandma from losing her home. Nick and Alex dream of each other every night. Nick uses his love for her to survive the harsh realities of war. Alex has no choice but to take two secret jobs. She is a reporter and a stripper. In society, she is a lady. When she is not working, she is being courted by societies most sought after bachelors. Still, she can never completely get over Nick.

When Nick returns from the war, he finds that his older brother has squandered away the family fortune. He is even about to lose the family estate. Nick takes every risk necessary to fix his brother's mistakes. He even pretends to be Christopher in order to seduce Alex into agreeing to marry his older twin. Yet when Nick discovers how deeply Christopher's dishonorable schemes go, he gives up on trying to hide his own feelings for Alex. He claims her for himself. He also can't let his brother lose any more of the family's property. He will do some scheming of his own to take control of the money, the title, and the estate.

Basically, add a lot of padding to this story and you have the complete book. Some parts were very romantic, others were frustrating. (Such as watching Nick poor his heart out to Alex, while pretending to be his brother, to help seal an engagement between them. Ugh! We want to see him fight for her, not give her away to his worthless brother!)
The characters were interesting and the core story good. Those things kept me reading to the end of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Ms. Henley Delivers Again!!!.......2005-07-25

Ms. Henley always offers her readers strong almost willful heroines, and strong male leads that manage to support rather than stifle their spirit. This story is no different. What is different is the fact that hero and heroine spend a good deal of the story apart from each other. As a result this is not the normal type of read that we normally get from Ms. Henley.

Christopher (Kit) and Nicholas are twins that are as close as they can be. They often switch places and Kit being the favored older son is willful and weak. Nicholas on the other had is despised by his father and when he is accidentally killed in a hunting accident by Kit, Nicholas steps in and takes the blame. It only gets worse though. The one thing that Nicholas was counting on is the family horse farm. When the will is read, he finds out that he has been cut out totally. Nicholas has pride and will not sit back and let society mock him. He joins the army and heads to the Peninsula in order to fight Napoleon. He leaves behind the one thing that he wishes was his. Alexandra Sheffield. She is met for his brother and he wishes that she were his. But, fate has seen the end to that dream.

Alexandra has always loved Nicholas. She grew up with Kit and Nicholas and although her grandmother wants her to marry well, she wants the younger son. Problem with that...is Nicholas has honor and he won't dishonor Alexandera. She also wants to be a writer but that dream is also going to be hard to achieve in a world that is dominated by men. She is deeply hurt when Nicholas leaves without saying goodbye in order to fight a war. While he is away she leads a very dangerous, and unorthodox life. One that opens up doors to Alexandra she never knew existed. What will happen when her hero returns from the war? Will she finally find love with her Nicholas, or will she be forced to marry the other twin?

Alexandra was a very unusual heroine. Her ideas and actions are not what you normally find within the pages of Regency romances. At times her actions were a bit overbearing. Kit and Nicholas are dynamic characters but they didn't really seem to develop as Ms. Henley's other hero's. I would have liked to see Alexandra and Nicholas' relationship more fleshed out and I would have like to have seen them together more. Especially without the misconception regarding which twin was which. Call me romantic but I would think that Alexandra should have been able to the difference between the twin she loved and the twin that was a friend. Especially after having grown up with them. Still this was an entertaining read although not one of my favorites by this talented author.

4 out of 5 stars Really quick review.......2005-05-27

I really liked this book. If you're a fan of hers you should enjoy it.

    2 out of 5 stars Completely unbelievable..........2004-08-11

As someone else so aptly put it, this is a Regency romance in name only. The heroine behaves unbelievably, even for a much later period in history!

She dresses as a man and wanders seedy parts of town in the company of her maid, she takes a job in a brothel to pay her bills (not as a prostitute, of course), she wears a costume to a masquerade that seems to be totally out of keeping with the clothing of the time period - particularly for a well-born unmarried young lady ... it was completely unbelievable and boring the way the author tried so hard to make the heroine's odd and daring behavior titilating.

The situation with the twin brothers was stereotypical in the extreme (in the scene which is supposed to set up their characters, one is good, the other is considered "evil" by their father) and I was surprised at how many times the heroine was completely fooled by whichever twin she was with into thinking she was with the other brother. It's normal for someone to be confused at first, since the twins are identical, of course, but she was supposedly madly in love with one of them. You would think that, if nothing else, instinct would guide her to deduce what was going on.

Perhaps that is oversimplifying the matter, but I was bored by the constant role-playing by all the characters.

There was very little romantic tension to be found in this book, and the romantic scenes seemed tacked on as they came so late in the story. And the resolution to the issue of the twins seemed contrived to me.

I was not satisfied by this book at all. I will probably not be reading another of her books. It just left such a bad taste in my mouth, as in why did I bother to finish this?

To give you a better perspective on my opinion, I enjoy early Amanda Quick and early Brenda Joyce. (I think they've both gotten off track recently). In my opinion, they write very entertaining, sexy, historically grounded (though not perfect) romances.

    Book Description

In this road map to restoring feminine sexual power, Betsy Prioleau introduces and analyzes the stories and stratagems of history's greatest seductresses. These are the women who ravished the world—from such classic figures as Cleopatra and Mae West to such lesser-known women as the infamous Violet Gordon Woodhouse, who lived in a ménage with four men. Smarts, imagination, courage, and killer charm helped these love maestras claim the men of their choice and keep them fascinated for life. Through an exposé of their secrets, Seductress provides an authoritative, empowering guide to erotic sovereignty.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Couldn't make it through.......2007-02-03

Even though I was excited to read this book and fascinated by the subject matter, I just couldn't slog through it. Prioleau should have written either: 1) an academic study of the seductress as mythological figure and icon in history, or 2) a light, fun, flippant, sexy book for modern women about the art and history of seductresses. What she's doing instead is trying to merge the two, and it's awful. Her tone is saucy and sassy, but the sorts of comparisons she's making are more suited to an academic, professional voice. She writes as if she's trying to be the reader's bosom friend, but she can't help peppering her language with little French phrases (far, far too many little French phrases). She's not using footnotes, but she can't resist quoting from sources, so the reader has to page to the back of the book and find the reference in a list sorted by chapter and page number. I would rather have either easily-accessible footnotes, or else no quotations at all but an annotated source list for each topic at the end of the book. Overall, she comes off like an overweight, matronly, middle-aged history professor who's trying desperately to be "hip to the lingo" and the best friend of all her students when everyone would like her better if she'd just cut the cutesy act and be herself. Because of the style she's adopted, I don't have much confidence in her as a scholar, and I can't stand her as a writer.

Prioleau's writing is even more disappointing because the subject matter is really interesting! I *want* to read about seductresses. She covers famous and not-so-famous seductresses from history, women who really took the world by the balls and got what the wanted out of life, and I'm genuinely interested in reading their stories. But she insists on comparing each one to a mythological goddess, when there's no reason to do so! Each figure is fascinating in her own right, without the need to be likened to a Neolithic owl-headed goddess figurine. I agree that it's important to discuss the goddesses, that goddesses should get their own chapter, but the mythology and the primeval worship of female sexuality is done to death here. I would have much preferred to see each historical seductress appreciated for herself, for her own unique way of seducing and claiming power, than as an aspect of some ancient magical womanly life force. I understand what Prioleau is trying to do, but it's not working.

I made it halfway through the second chapter before I had to put this book down in annoyance. I would read it happily if it was an academic book or if it was fun, light nonfiction. But it's neither, and the mash-up means that I'm turning away from a topic I honestly want to read about because of the author's writing style.

5 out of 5 stars Joy, High Self Esteem, Confidentence, Abundance.......2007-01-12

    .
These women grabbed the world by the balls and had their way with it.

I think the reviewers who slam this book can't stand to see a powerful woman.

    I love powerful women.

    Bravo Betsy Prioleau

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and empowering!.......2006-10-27

I think what many of the previous reviewers found offensive was that the author turned the sexual double standard on its head; the old "promiscuous men are studs and pimps, promiscuous women are slut and whores" axiom. In this book, promiscuous women who enjoyed sex and didn't allow men to objectify them are the real and ultimate pimps, the studs. These women took on the male role of sexual conquerer and they are seen in a positive light for it. Although I personally can't imagine this being a satisfying lifestyle, I think it's awesome that some women have really put on the boys' shoes, dodged marriage and commitment, had successful careers, pursued attractive men, and toyed with lovers.
Women's sexuality is so often used against them, so often seen as their weakness that it is disturbing to the popular mind to see women using their sexuality, which society says is their mortal Achilles heel to be exploited by men, to their advantage. The notion that women would use the very weapon that's brandished against them to conquer the world is terrifying. It's okay to see women on the front of magazines displaying themselves for men's pleasure, but it's *not* okay when they use that display for their own personal gain, their own pleasure. They become dangerous.
And this wonderful book is about dangerous women. It's delightfully readable. It shows how many very accomplished women have been mistreated by historians (Did you know Cleopatra was *also* a great ruler, besides just being the mistress of Mark Antony? Did you know she was ugly?) It also shows how many women, notorius and famous and incredibly influential on the course of history, have been deliberately and systematically ignored in the history books, their names and faces lost to time immediately after their deaths. The author resurrects these powerful forgotten figures. Also fantastic was her classifications for these women -- ugly seductresses, old seductresses, musicians, politicians, artists, ect. The point is that these women didn't just have great sex -- which is what we usually think of when we envision a seductress. No, they seduced *the minds* of the public, of powerful figures, they used charisma to get what they wanted. And it's important to note that this is *not* unlike what men do to succeed in their careers! Men too use charm, charisma, their looks and body language to overcome objection and succeed in life. When this author uses the term "seductress", she really doesn't mean a woman who can get lots of people to sleep with her; that's not much of a talent at all. To this author, seductresses inspired devotion, respect, love, lust, envy, professional admiration, and shifted the social politics of their time.
Besides that, the writer is exciting and dynamic. Her style is action oriented and packs a real punch.
I have one gripe. The goddess theme was soooooo irritating. Soooooo irritating. Every woman had to be compared to Innana or some other goddess. It's easy, though, to skip over these paragraphs because they are sort of clearly marked in the text, so you can easily hop over them and get to the good parts. Don't let it keep you from buying this very pleasurable, empowering, beautiful book.

1 out of 5 stars And the point was...?.......2006-08-13

I was excited to read the book because it talked about even how unattractive or intelligent women can be seductresses. However, all the author talked about was how the various artists, intellectuals, and adventurers used sex to get what they wanted from men. Basically, the author reduces women to physical beings and tries to justify this treatment by comparing the women in her book to the Sumerian goddess, Inanna. There was no everlasting love for these women, a myth if there ever was one. And then Prioleau claims that if women reclaim their sexual selves, they will gain the everlasting love that has been eluding them. Essentially, the book is BS and I wouldn't give this book to anyone. I would actually advise friends and family members to avoid it at all costs. It just perpetuates the image of women as sexual creatures to be used by men in exchange for power, money, fame, and security.

    2 out of 5 stars Major disappointment..........2006-06-26

There are points in the introduction that were not found elsewhere in this book . I was not expecting one of those How-To's but more of a book about unconventional women. All in all, I finished Prioleau's tome with utter relief and promptly placed it in the donation box.
The women (some famous like Cleopatra and some not) are divided amongst sub-categories according to their primary (?) role in life.
In all truth, I was impressed by the level of research Prioleau must have done as well as intrigued and entertrained by the profiles on some very charming women.
Prioleau, however, seems to be obssessed with the ancient Sumerian goddess Inana. She touches upon Inana's myth early in the book and continues to make the same point again and again until the very last page. I had to force myself not to skip all the paragraphs whenever Prioleau went Inana-crazy in between the women stories. Also, the last chapter was some kind of 'up with women' manifesto that came off more bitter than empowering.
I gave this book two stars based on the women Prioleau wrote about. This book might be good for a women studies' class, but it does not turn out to be a pleasurable reading for most.

An extraordinary portrait of a young woman, terrorized in her own country, brought to the U.S. and mercilessly exploited by the film industry.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Armenian survivor story I've ever read.......2001-09-26

I have read many of the books written by survivors of the Armenian genocide carried out by Turkey, and this is by far the best of them all. Aurora Mardigian (her name was subsequently changed by "Hollywood") was 14 when her story began, and what makes this book the best is also what makes it the worst: she gives many specific examples of how Turks murdered and tortured Armenians, told quite dispassionately but in no less horrifying terms.
I've already bought copies to give to my brother and sister, even at its high price, because it's worth every cent, and so that all will KNOW what the Armenian people went through at the hands of the still-denying Turks.
Those who don't know what Armenia and her people are about will also learn the true nature and identity of our wonderful culture, and all that it emcompassed both in early times as well as currently.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2000-07-19

This book is truly interesting. It explains how an Armenian Genocide survivor's memoir was turned into a motion picture in 1919, a year or two after her arrival to the United States. The beginning of the book explains the whole movie production process, and even lists reviews given at the time of its showing. The movie apparently was very popular in 1919, however all copies of it seem to have been lost. However, the book has about 6 still photos from the movie. The bulk of the book is simply a reprint of Aurora Mardiganian's account of living through the Armenian Genocide. It is amazing, sad, sickening. This is an extremely excellent book for anyone knowing little about the Armenian Genocide, and an original and interesting one for those more familiar with the subject.

4 out of 5 stars ONLY REVIEWING IMPULSE.......2007-04-21

I am only reviewing IMPULSE, the nora roberts entry. I got this book out of the library, where it was a standalone large print.

Thought this is early roberts, it is extremely charming and holds almost everything I love about her books. The heroine is strong, but doesn't know it. The hero is romantic, but diesn't know it.

There is a wonderful backdrop in Greece. There's a bit of the 80's "masterful male" about it, but not too much.

My only problem with the story was that it was short. Well, and they had casual sex. Can't do that these days. But for its length, it was a great read!!

      IMPULSE by Nora Roberts
Practical Rebecca Malone was having the time of her life. She'd quit her accounting firm and gone to Greece for adventure - so when a handsome stranger approached her, she followed her impulse. Stephen Nickodemus found Rebecca irresistible. She was a woman of contradictions, and he wanted her, in a way no man could safely want a woman: for all time.

      RAVISHED! by Paris Afton Bonds
Nelli Walzchak was a take-charge nurse on the job, but her personal life was virtually non-existent. A Mexican vacation changed all that when she found herself kidnapped by a dashing buccaneer who wanted her professional help, then asked her to stay on forever when he learned that what he really needed was her love.

THE ROAD TO MANDALAY by Kathleen Korbel
Workaholic Kate Manion had finally taken a break from her high-pressure job and now sailed the high seas on a windjammer. Devil-may-care captain Jack Whelan melted her icy exterior to find a woman passionate with desire. Could their love be the real thing, or was this just a shipboard romance?
