Book Description
In 1836, when she was nine years old, Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanche Indians. This is the story of how she grew up with them, mastered their ways, married one of their leaders, and became, in every way, a Comanche woman. It is also the story of a proud and innocent people whose lives pulsed with the very heartbeat of the land. It is the story of a way of life that is gone forever....

Not Bad.......2007-10-10
"Ride the Wind" is a historical fiction novel that details events in the life of a woman named Cynthia Anne Parker (or Naduah). The book itself is well written with a very descriptive style, but sometimes it gets a bit too descriptive. If you are squeamish or faint of heart I would not recommend this book for you as it is not sparing in its details of raids and battles. I would recommend this book if you enjoy TONS of action with a hint of romance. Not very relevant but extremely noticeable (to me anyway) is the authors never ending use of the word undulating (count it it's ALL OVER THE PLACE). Overall a good read, especially if you like stories about cowboys and Indians
Excellent read. Long but descriptive........2007-09-19
This is and excellent enjoyable read. It does leave one wondering how much research went into the background of Ms. Robson's work. She describes how wonderful the Indian tribes were to their captive white children. She does go into the very poor treatment of more mature captives. As a juxtoposition, one could read the short novel "Where the Broken Heart Still Beats" 'The Story of Cynthia Ann Parker' by Carolyn Meyer.
Not for the discriminating reader.......2007-09-11
Unfortunately, Cynthia Ann Parker never talked about her capture and her life with the Comanches, so her story is wide-open to exploitation by amateurish sensation writers.
On the technical side, the narrative jumps haphazardly from one character to the next, which is confusing because the reader never knows whose eyes (s)he is looking through.
On the plot side, the story suffers from an overabundance of flat characters and unnecessary sidestories. Combined with the wobbly POV and the detailed descriptions of violence and sex, this makes for an uninspiring, often outright annoying read.
I strongly recommend reading the excerpt before buying "Ride the Wind". The first few pages show you exactly what to expect from the rest of this book.
Ride the Wind.......2007-09-01
Based on historical events, it is the most compelling book I have ever read! I actually felt like I was there, back in time experiencing a life that was unimaginable to me. I felt the pain, suffering, love, the struggle to survive, and so much sorrow. In some ways, this book changed my life. A lesson in history and a lesson in life, it is a must read for all!
My all-time favorite book.......2007-08-30
If someone were to ask me what my favorite book is, I wouldn't even have to think - and would answer in a mili-second "Ride the Wind".....this is the most powerful, gripping, MOVING book I have ever read. It is obvious Lucia St. Clair Robson did hours of research to write this book. This book left me with a better education of the real life of a Comanche, and the knowledge of how they lived, loved and functioned from day to day. It was fascinating to learn how they used every little thing with a purpose - items today we wouldn't consider using, or even better, this book shows us a way of life most of us couldn't handle! A person can't help but have more respect for the Native American way of life. You must read this book-- if you like history, adventure, true-life, romance, suspense......well this book has it all but at the same time it will grip your heart and leave you feeling like it happened to you or someone you know. I never read a book that left me sobbing at the end......but this one got to me deep down into my soul. I first read it 24 years ago and keep it on my bookshelf at all times, and every so often read it again. I never tire of it. It is a WONDERFUL masterpiece we call a novel...... read it and you won't be disappointed!!! It TRULY should be made into a movie - it would be great on the big screen. If you loved "Dances With Wolves" like I did.......then this one would rank right up there with it for you.

Both books are wonderful.......2005-04-05
Nobel and Rachel's story (texas Proud) begins this 2 bk series and is very enjoyable. Ride the Wind continues the life of these wonderful characters with his sister Saber and Reese. Reese is an ace tracker but a loner and struggling to keep his ranch. Saber is the little rich girl who is supposed to marry his friend Matthew. When Saber is abducted Matt asks Reese to use his tracking skills to get her back. Their relationship remains innocent enough despite attraction because Reese is ever aware that Saber belongs to his best friend. Saber is delightful. She is bubbly and independent and her energy bounces off the page. You can't have a gloomy day while reading about Saber. It's an easy book to read in one sitting although you hate to see it end so soon........enjoy.

I just absolutely LOVED,this book!! Constance O'Banyon is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE AUTHORS!! I have not been disappointed yet by her.Ms. O'Banyon knows how to write about love and relationships, she is one of the best authors out-there today:o)
THIS BOOK REMINDED ME OF VISITING A LOVED FRIEND.......2002-03-04
Since I met Saber in TEXAS PROUD, I already knew her by the time she showed up in RIDE THE WIND. Reese is such a wonderful hero--he didn't feel like he was good enough for Saber, but she proved to him that he was. I liked her brother, Noble, entering the book, since we learned his story in Texas Proud. I loved both books and I didn't want them to end. ...
A most devoted fan!!!
Read Again and Again.......2001-04-25
This is the best book yet by Constance. I have read this book three times and it just keeps getting better. The hero, Reese is the type of man any woman dreams about. Sabre is the woman many dream of becoming. She stood by her man and allowed him to learn to trust and more than anything to love. I highly recommended this book.
Ride The Wind.......2001-03-15
Constance never lets me down, and that's true of RIDE THE WIND. Reese Staddard is a hero to die for, and Saber Vincente is his equal. As a Texan, I like the insight she has of my state. I believe this is my favorite book by her.

Buckle up and get ready for a wild ride.......1999-09-29
Bill Band has managed to capture the essence of a bygone era and make it live for those of us who weren't there. An exciting read.
A true story told by a real American hero.......1999-07-22
Bill Band has told this story in a manner in which the reader understands what went on in this little understood albiet important theater and why it happened that way. It is a personal account which is engaging and well told. I'll bet Mr Band has more stories to tell .. and I hope he does.
Live with the Flying Tigers.......1999-07-20
This story takes you back to a time when the world was a much larger place. Men and machines were the means to accomplish great deeds. Computers did not tell you how and when to do everything. Men actually flew by the seat of their pants and when they made a mistake they were quite often the only one's who ever knew. Laugh at the funny side of combat and feel the heat of tears when a friend is lost. Don't miss this wonderful story.
Fascinating autobiography.......1999-07-19
A colorful, engrossing story where real life is far more interesting than fiction as the author helps us relive his exploits. For war/aviation buffs, an adventure not to be missed.

Zeke and Abbie Forever.......2002-11-17
Savage Destiny contains a great deal of factual information on the spirituality of the Cheyenne throughout the book. The storyline of Zeke and Abbie is page turning. The plot moves continually. Zeke and Abbie's love triumph over tragedy after tragedy, death and near death. A love blessed by the Spirits brings you into realms of the supernatural. I am awed when a supernatural need pushes Abbie into looking at the Sacred Arrows. She is punished but a small sacrifice to finally understand that God by any name is God. She understands the Spiritually of the Cheyenne blended into her own faith. Abbie sees the good and evil in men regardless of skin color or faith.
The only parts I did not like were the superficial long explanations of what drove insignificant characters in the story. I just didn't read it them because it really wasn't a necessary part of the story.
Part 2 of the continuing saga of Zeke and Abbey.......2001-03-29
I wanted the book to start right off about Zeke and Abbie but it didn't after I got into it could not put down. The lost of Abbie baby Danicing Moon was a evil person all she did was for the spite of it all. I can't wait till I get book 3 and 4 which I have ordered. At times I wish all was in one book for they are hard to find at times.
it was great.......1999-06-26
It was wonderful i could feel their sorrow when Abby lost her first baby. Rosanne is a great writer.

Book Description
A young girl makes her way slowly through a Japanese garden where she spots one leaf, two carved temple dogs, three miniature bonsai, and four startled birds. This counting book introduces the youngest readers to the beauty and hidden secrets of a Japanese garden. It also introduces haiku, with ten poems that are simple and straightforward. The rhythmic haiku appear in a context that will make perfect sense to young readers. Each page contains additional information about the scene shown, and with lush illustrations, the loveliness of the garden can't be ignored. This is a picture book that works on many levels.
Customer Reviews:
simply beautiful and beautifully simple.......2006-06-19
The art is attractive, clear, and offers some surpising perspective changes (for example when the girl scares off 4 birds as seen from above all the action.) The haiku is clear, beautiful and accesible to young listeners. Several have a gentle humor that is really appealing.
There are several footnotes which explore Japanese culture and provide more depth to the story built into this counting book, which I think is an asset.
The last picture of the book encorporates all the the items counted from 1-10. It is fun to search for them.
My only wish is that the numerals on each page were not in the fancy-ish font which was chosen, but that could just be my early childhood education "persniketyness" getting in the way.
Counting to ten in a Japanese garden through haiku.......2003-01-05
It makes sense to adopt a non-traditional definition of haiku for this counting book that looks at the hidden secrets of a Japanese garden. So what is impressive is that the haiku in this volume follow the traditional five-seven-five syllable pattern. "One Leaf Rides the Wind" combines the haiku poems of Celeste Davidson Mannis with the illustrations of Susan Kathleen Hartung, created using oil paint glazes on sealed paper as we follow a young girl as she counts her discoveries in and about a garden. To help young readers to understand that Japanese gardens are places that encourage visitors to look within themselves to find peace and tranquility, this beautiful volume includes notesa bout Japanese religion and philosophy. This is how we learn about the shih tzu dog statues that guard gardens and temples as well as the sweet treats that are part of a traditional Japnese tea ceremony. "One Leaf Rides the Wind" is a lovely little counting book because it does so much more than simply provide ten different things for children ages 4-8 to count; it also introduces them to the aspects of another culture that should inspire them to further explanation (and which even inspires some reviewers to use haiku to express their own joy over this book).
Simply Gorgeous!.......2002-09-22
This book has it all! Beautiful words, pictures and more. It is a misnomer to pass this off just as a counting book. It is poetry, it is art, it is entertainment and it is educational too. What a thrill to be able to sound so knowledgeable about Japanese gardens when asked questions by my little one, thanks to the very discreet information portions of each well designed page. The best part was the final image where we could see the whole garden and recount our journey while counting up all the elements gathered together in a single beautiful painting. Don't miss out on this one! It will be enjoyed for years.

Shamans, Witch Doctors, and Medicine Men.......2005-12-11
I can't say this book was very exciting, but it certainly was thought provoking. Here's why: Anthropologists now say humans like us have been around for more than 100,000 years (probably much longer). But human history only goes back 5000 years or so. In those 5000 years we've gone from mud huts to intercontinental jet travel. What were our early ancestors doing for those other 95,000 (or more) years? Just sitting around in caves, looking into the campfire? For 95,000 years? And if they did have a culture, where are the artifacts? This book may hint at the answer.
On the walls of Egyptian tombs there are representations of men floating in the air at about a 50 degree angle--with erect penises. Similiar drawings (thousands of years older) are found in caves throughout Europe and southern Africa. This seems to have been a widespread "art style" that lasted thousands of years. The author tells of combining some of these postures with rhythmic sounds: chants, drum beats, and rattles. It seems as though different body postures determine what sort of "trip" one experiences upon entering an altered state of consciousness.
Is it possible that shamans, witch doctors, and medicine men were on to something? Maybe the reason that no sophisticated artificts from early peoples are to be found is that those early people took a different path than us. A path not towards technology, but one that lead to the developement of altered states of consciousness. Could it be that those cave drawings and the author's reconstructions are all that remain of an sophisticated prehistoric science?
Interesting.......2004-01-19
First of all I'll state why I read this book. I practice the martial art called Aikido which brought me to get interested in the body energy (Ki/Chi). I also practice Chi-Gung and Tai-Chi. One of my Aikido fellows is a physical therapist and he frequently talks about native-american healers and non-ordinary state of reality. So in turn I became curious to know something about shamanism, even because I came to believe that all this "energy stuff" boils down to few principles regardless as to whether it is applied to combat or healing or whatever else.
I am in no way an expert in this specific field. This having said, I enjoyed reading this book even if English is not my first language. It is well written, and a part of it is very interesting. The author's path toward her meeting with the spirits is intriguing. Tension drops where the too many reports of trance experiences cease to be of general interest while eventually maintaining some relevance only to those who are deeply into this activities. The interpretation of the reports is down to a bare minimum.
On the other hand the author is rather self-involved and she fails to answer some questions someone like me would like to know the answer to. The healer/shaman needs to enter the otherworld to heal or to foresee the future or to fullfill an inner call, I understant that. But "WHY" would ordinary people want to enter a non-ordinary reality when they are not healers? Trancers melt into the ground, fly with big eagles depending on the postures. So what? Is this kind of trance different from smoking pot? Could trance ecstasy still be relevant in our society as the author seems to suggest? The author states that in our modern society we use high-tech surrogates for our innate need of trance. I can buy that but is it proved? Does it mean that posture-induced trance, as opposed to LSD-induced trance, is brain-friendly and approved by DEA? By the way, is trancing brain-friendly or can it fry someone's head? It eventually can as it is somehow connected to demonic possession. What is the real relationship between the use of allucinogenic substances (the mighty Sixties stuff) and shamanic extasy? The information contained in this book is very diluted and obliterated. The discovery that some postures can mediate ecstatic trance is extremely exciting but it doesn't take a whole book to tell that.
I am having the impression that Dr Goodman's main goal in writing this book it to prepare a fertile ground for her future grant applications. From a perspective of a grant applicant I appreciate the effort. From the perspective of a reader I would have appreciated a more concise and more complete book
Rich and Fascinating.......2003-05-27
I was perplexed at the "Publishers Weekly" review of this
book, citing that "all of the descriptions sound the same".
Whoever wrote that must not have clearly read the book.
The experiences people have differ greatly with the TYPE of
posture, and this is clearly explained in this book, as well
as in a book by Belinda Gore ("Ecstatic Body Postures: An
Alternate Reality Workbook). I have personally attended a
seminar of this work, and continue to practice it, with
others, and our experiences are not the "same". They are
amazing, rich, deep, and healing - and different for different
people.
This particular book is a wonderful story of how anthropologist
Felicitas Goodman was led to even formulate her thesis in the
first place- by great trial and error, working with hundreds
of people all around the world - a work which has continued
for over twenty years. She describes in detail the experiences
of many people as they "journey" by assuming the postures, to
a specific drumming or rattling beat. She shares how the Cuyamungue Institute was founded over 25 years ago - a combination of practical hard work and magical, inspirational
experiences. She shares how, over time, certain postures revealed
themselves as "fitting" into various catagories- such as healing,
divining, metamorphosis, lower world journey, and so on. In addition to being a wonderful insight into shamanic types of
endeavor, this is a story of the life of a dedicated scholar, led by many insights and observations, to develop a body of work
which is a scientific research work in progress, as well as being a possible link to the ancient roots of humanity. I recommend it to anyone interested in spirituality,
the psyche, somatics, healing, and shamanism.
A Most Significant Piece of Work.......1998-11-22
I found this book to be one of the most helpful works to the study of shamanic realizations. Ms. Goodman has opened up our minds to astounding possibilities.
