Book Description
Spy tells, for the first time, the full, authoritative story of how FBI agent Robert Hanssen, code name grayday, spied for Russia for twenty-two years in what has been called the “worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history”–and how he was finally caught in an incredible gambit by U.S. intelligence.
David Wise, the nation’s leading espionage writer, has called on his unique knowledge and unrivaled intelligence sources to write the definitive, inside story of how Robert Hanssen betrayed his country, and why.
Spy at last reveals the mind and motives of a man who was a walking paradox: FBI counterspy, KGB mole, devout Catholic, obsessed pornographer who secretly televised himself and his wife having sex so that his best friend could watch, defender of family values, fantasy James Bond who took a stripper to Hong Kong and carried a machine gun in his car trunk.
Brimming with startling new details sure to make headlines,
Spy discloses:
-the previously untold story of how the FBI got the actual file on Robert Hanssen out of KGB headquarters in Moscow for $7 million in an unprecedented operation that ended in Hanssen’s arrest.
-how for three years, the FBI pursued a CIA officer, code name gray deceiver, in the mistaken belief that he was the mole they were seeking inside U.S. intelligence. The innocent officer was accused as a spy and suspended by the CIA for nearly two years.
-why Hanssen spied, based on exclusive interviews with Dr. David L. Charney, the psychiatrist who met with Hanssen in his jail cell more than thirty times. Hanssen, in an extraordinary arrangement, authorized Charney to talk to the author.
-the full story of Robert Hanssen’s bizarre sex life, including the hidden video camera he set up in his bedroom and how he plotted to drug his wife, Bonnie, so that his best friend could father her child.
- how Hanssen and the CIA’s Aldrich Ames betrayed three Russians secretly spying for the FBI–including tophat, a Soviet general–who were then executed by Moscow.
-that after Hanssen was already working for the KGB, he directed a study of moles in the FBI when–as he alone knew–he was the mole.
Robert Hanssen betrayed the FBI. He betrayed his country. He betrayed his wife. He betrayed his children. He betrayed his best friend, offering him up to the KGB. He betrayed his God. Most of all, he betrayed himself. Only David Wise could tell the astonishing, full story, and he does so, in masterly style, in
Spy.

Far and away the best book on the subject.......2007-09-30
Without a doubt, this book is better than any others on the case of Robert Hanssen. Wise has absolutely the best sources (just compare the acknowledgements) and it is very fairly and professionally written along all lines. Far and away better than "The Bureau and the Mole."
Couldn't put it down ..........2007-09-21
Simply put, one of the best books I've read in recent years. After renting the movie "Breach" which is loosly based on Hansen, I wanted to know more about why and how he became a spy. This book answered all that and much more. Very well written ... no loose ends. Just a great book. Such a shame that a man as intelligent as Robert Hansen used his gifts for evil and not for good. There is some evidenct that suggests that the Russians didn't even know his identity! Hard to believe they didn't have someone watching him as he picked up the money at the drop sites but ... that could be one reason he got away with it for solong. But the book also tells of the many times he should have been caught but talked his way out of it. Read this book ... it's excellent.
A companion to Breach.......2007-06-21
After seeing Breach, I wanted to learn more about the Hanssen case, and this is the first book I found in the library. Robert Hanssen is a fascinating subject, and this book provided information that was missing or glossed over in the film. For example, money seems a major factor in his spying. I did not get that impression from the movie. Also, the movie portrays him as combative and confrontational, whereas the book depicts him as socially awkward, aloof, and a nerd.
While I respect the author's research, I am unimpressed by his writing. He does not tell the Hanssen story in an engaging way. Far too much time is spent describing the bit players. Do I really need to know that this FBI agent was "tall and affable" and this woman was "bright and articulate"? In my opinion, the book should have provided more speculation on Hanssen's motives. I also found the author's attempts at creativity and levity to be distracting and cliche. For example, note this sentence: "This time, he decided, he would play in the majors" (46). I also dislike the author's occasional moments of self-applause. For example, in a footnote he mentions that Hanssen thought the author is "the best espionage writer around" (271). Congratulations David, this pervert likes your work.
"Spy" gives a complete overview of the Hanssen case. I recommend it for its insight despite its literary flaws; however I suspect that more compelling books exist.
Oh What Tangled Webs He Weaved.......2007-06-20
Robert Hanssen was in a league of his own. There wasn't another spy to compare him to, and not only for the amount of damage he did to compromise American intelligence to Russia. This was a man of several contradictions. It must have been hard for him to keep his respective roles straight. He was an agent for the FBI, a devoted family man, devout Catholic, obsessed with porn, spying for Russia, and became infatuated with a stripper to the extent that he took her on a trip to Hong Kong and bought her a Mercedes. He was the computer guru who appeared contemptious of other co-workers. It appears to me that he often employed the defense mechanism called reaction formation which means he took an attitude with others the opposite of which produced anxiety in himself. He not only betrayed his country by using his job for personal gain, but horribly betrayed his wife by sharing sexual photos of her to his friend. Hanssen justifies his spying by saying his first job at the FBI was in Scarsdale, New York, and the cost of living there with his minimal salary forced him into needing extra money. Hanssen spent over 20 years compromising America's secrets through approximately 18 drops of documents for the Russians. His Russian contact made sure to massage Hanssen's ego with flattery in communication with him. What the Russians paid for this information was a pittance compared to its value. A tunnel built under the Soviet embassy in Washington that cost hundreds of millions of dollars was for naught as he passed this on to the Russians. Three Soviets working for the FBI were named by Hanssen and were called back to Russia and executed. Apparently it didn't bother his conscience because he would always confess his spying along with his other sins to a Catholic priest. It doesn't appear right to me that he should be able to confess such law infractions and not be reported, but that's another story. This is the third book I've read on Robert Hanssen's life of espionage, and I feel this one is the best.
Slow start, but interesting.......2007-06-11
This book is most appropriate for anyone who believes in US government conspiracies. The inability of the FBI to catch a spy who seemed to put out crazy person vibes for years is a bit scary. Robert Hanssen was one strange cat. Maybe he was smart, but he didn't come across as too smart in this book. It is no shocker that a guy who claimed to take religion and family values seriously ends up as a huge hypocrite. The book gets more interesting towards the end. Sad story.

Book Description
In her most affirming and life-changing book yet, Dr. Harriet Lerner teaches us how to restore love and connection with the people who matter the most. In The Dance of Connection we learn what to say (and not say) when:
- We need an apology, and the person who has harmed us won't apologize or be accountable.
- We don't know how to take a conversation to the next level when we feel desperate.
- We feel worn down by the other person's criticism, negativity, or irresponsible behavior.
- We have been rejected or cut off, and the other person won't show up for the conversation.
- We are struggling with staying or leaving, and we don't know our "bottom line."
- We are convinced that we've tried everything -- and nothing changes.
Filled with compelling personal stories and case examples, Lerner outlines bold new "voice lessons" that show us how to speak with honor and personal integrity, even when the other person behaves badly.
Whether we're dealing with a partner, parent, sister, or best friend, The Dance of Connection teaches us how to navigate our most important relationships with clarity, courage, and joyous conviction.

learn to communicate positively .......2007-08-09
I was not impressed with the style in which the book was written, and I struggled to keep reading it in the beginning. However, I think the information she provides in the book is invaluable and after sticking with it, I learned a lot about how to talk to people in various types of relationships and situations. I would particularly recommend this book for people like me who find themselves speaking out of emotion, because this book can help you recognize your weaknesses and learn the benefits of communicating with control and with purpose.
loved the book!.......2007-04-10
book in excellent conditions, great quality and delivery! one of the best books I've read, highly recommended for everyone in the search of wellness in all relationships
This book saved my marriage.......2007-03-02
If there is one book that you read to help you make connections to people please read this. I can bet that it will make a profound difference in you ability to connect to anyone. You will be able to have conversations without accidently pushing the other person's sensitive buttonw. On the other hand, if you wish to push a button you will be able to do so in a profound manner, and with malice of forethought. You will know how to avoid pushing buttons during a conversation, thus encourage two way communication, even with someone who is not familiar with the book's teachings.
First, we must learn to dance alone.......2007-02-04
To me, this book is the closest thing to an instruction book on relating to others in ways that preserve the self. Harriet offers clear, insightful, and do-able advice on learning how to hear our own voice and then clearly (and courageously) share it with others. Throughout the book, she continually illuminates the theme of focusing on the self instead obsessing about the other. The dance of connection begins with learning how to gracefully dance alone.
great wisdom from an easy-to-read writer.......2007-01-10
I found this book full of wisdom and only wished I had read it when I was exactly in some of the situations Ms. Lerner describes. However it is still relevant to me now and I look forward to applying it into the future. I love to drop back into her books regularly for new insights. Friends have benefitted too - we had a couple of great days just chilling after Christmas - reading and walking together. And great discussions on some of her key points. Add it to your book club and open yourselves to a whole new world.
Book Description
The recent National Geographic special on the Gospel of Judas was a major media event, introducing to tens of millions of viewers one of the most important biblical discoveries of modern times. Now, a leading historian of the early church, Bart Ehrman, offers the first comprehensive account of the newly discovered Gospel of Judas, revealing what this legendary lost gospel contains and why it is so important for our understanding of Christianity. Ehrman, a featured commentator in the National Geographic special, describes how he first saw the Gospel of Judas--surprisingly, in a small room above a pizza parlor in a Swiss town near Lake Geneva--and he recounts the fascinating story of where and how this ancient papyrus document was discovered, how it moved around among antiquities dealers in Egypt, the United States, and Switzerland, and how it came to be restored and translated. More important, Ehrman gives the reader a complete and clear account of what the book teaches and he shows how it relates to other Gospel texts--both those inside the New Testament and those outside of it, most notably, the Gnostic texts of early Christianity. Finally, he describes what we now can say about the historical Judas himself as well as his relationship with Jesus, suggesting that one needs to read between the lines of the early Gospels to see exactly what Judas did and why he did it. The Gospel of Judas presents an entirely new view of Jesus, his disciples, and the man who allegedly betrayed him. It raises many questions and Bart Ehrman provides illuminating and authoritative answers, in a book that will interest anyone curious about the New Testament, the life of Jesus, and the history of Christianity after his death.

Good, but not great: little bits missing.......2007-09-07
First, I like a few other commentators, find Ehrman too "conservative" in his estimation of the development of early Christianity. (I would put at least John, probably Luke and maybe Matthew as second-century products, I believe the Eucharist was purely a co-option by Paul from pagan ritual, and a few other things.)
That said, the highlights of this book are Ehrman's analysis of its place within Gnostic Christianity and, to me, the thrill of discovery, attainment, and repairing of the codex of which it is part.
That also said, without expecting Ehrman to rewrite Kurt Rudolph's Gnosis, I would have liked to seen even more analysis by Ehrman of where exactly in the Gnostic, or at least "Gnosticizing," stream this fits. Does the one mention of Seth show that much of a connection to Sethian Gnosticism? Does Judas as protagonist show any connection to the (Judas) Thomas Christianity of The Gospel of Thomas and other literature?
Perhaps we shall here more on this from some quarter.
Well written but flawed.......2007-08-27
Bart Ehrman can write very good books (Misquoting Jesus) and very bad books (Truth and Fiction in the Da Vinci Code), so it's always a treat reading an Ehrman book and discovering who wrote it. In the case of The Lost Gospel of Judas, it seems to be co-authored. The "good" Ehrman showed up with his excellent writing skills and his attention to detail. But he obviously took long breaks, during which the "bad" Ehrman slipped in and did his damage.
On the positive side, Ehrman demonstrates the breadth and depth of his knowledge of early Christianity. He provides a detailed examination of the life of Judas, from all the available information, and places that information in perspective and in juxtaposition to itself. Chapters 2 to 4 (Judas in our Earliest Gospels, Judas in Later Gospel Traditions, Our Previous Knowledge of Judas) are extraordinary.
Ehrman also looks beyond the specifics of the Gospel and uses it as an opportunity to discuss Gnosticism in general, and Gnostic texts in particular. His discussion is interesting and illuminating, although I wouldn't throw away my Pagels and Meyers books just yet.
That being said, let's look at some of Ehrman's questionable comments:
- he claims that the gospels are from the 1st century (p. 13). That's a theory. There is quite a bit of research to indicate that at least 3 and possible all 4 gospels are 2nd century products, and there are several prominent authorities (e.g., Schonfield, Mack, Ellegard to name a few) who advance this alternate theory.
- he claims that Mary Magdalene "was one of three women who accompanied Jesus..." (p. 13) but that's clearly wrong. Luke 8:1-3 names only three of the women, but clearly states that were "many others."
- he claims that in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus is "silent on the way to the crucifixion, while being nailed to the cross... (p. 35)." Search as you will, the Gospel of Mark, and you'll find no mention of Jesus being nailed to the cross. You will find mention of the nails in the Gospel of John (20:25), but not Mark. No big deal, you think, but in a section of the book where Ehrman criticizes others for conflating the gospels, Ehrman's own coflation is noteworthy.
While these are relatively small matters, one of the continuing serious problems in this book was also reflected in Ehrman's Peter, Paul, and Mary. In both books he claims that the ancient material gives us a window not into history but into the minds of the people who wrote this material. I agree fully. Unfortunately Ehrman does take himself seriously enough to follow through with this hypothesis. He spends very little time telling us what he thinks was going on in the lives of the people who wrote the Gospel of Judas. Instead he focuses on the historical data and discusses its probable historicity, when in fact it is his underlying thesis that the Gospel should be read more for the dynamics of the writers than the historical validity of the principals. We get very little about the dynamics of the writers and their society.
Another problem with the book is Ehrman's conclusion that the Gospel of Judas offered some new perspective on the life of Judas. While it's true that the traditional view of Judas as the betraying, "money-grubbing thief and Christ killer (p. 180)" has been the main view, the idea that Judas was serving the greater need was not first advanced in the newly discovered Gospel.
Finally, I confess to being interested in the contents of a book and having no interest whatsoever in the behavior of the writer. I know some people enjoy these personal touches, but quite frankly if I wanted auto-biographical information about Ehrman or any other author, I would read their auto biography. To my understanding of the Gospel of Judas, does it matter that Ehrman received unexpected phone calls, or that he sat in the back seat of a van, or that the weather was cold and dreary on the day he first saw the Gospel? I think not.
On balance, this is a good book. The writing is well done and there is a wealth of material here for beginning and advanced students.
The first Christian? .......2007-08-08
As Ehrman notes, it's hardly necessary to introduce Judas Iscariot to readers. The many allusions to betrayal or deception: the kiss, the "thirty pieces of silver", the "one among you" reference are scattered throughout our literature, politics and daily circumstances. Even the fratricide of Cain receives less attention. However, a long-lost text providing an alternate view of this man, known to scholars but never seen in its original form, is likely to change all that. Ehrman, who was among the first to study the remants of it after it was found in Eygpt over thirty years ago, here provides an analysis of its contents. In a well-written account, he traces the document's history as known, and what it might mean for Christianity.
Judas, Ehrman notes, is portrayed in various ways in the "Synoptic Gospels", the accounts of Jesus that are the standard fare of Christian teachings. They range from a man driven by greed to an instrument of Satan. "The Gospel of Judas", originally written at about the same time as those stock accounts, depicts somebody else altogether. Not written by Judas, the writer tells the story of a man specially favoured by the teacher. According to the text, Judas was the one among "the Twelve" who actually "got" the message. Instead of "betraying" the teacher, Judas is actually given the task of freeing him from the "man who clothes me". Jesus, then, is but a spirit occupying a human body. Judas thus becomes the first Christian.
The foundation of this shift of role lies in a religious philosophy known as "Gnosticism". Although much debate has raged around the term as well as its tenets, its underlying thesis is that the material world is inherently evil, created by corrupt gods. The god revered by the Jews and transferred to Christianity is a false deity. Ehrman launches into a discussion of Gnostic Christianity, beginning with its complex creation myth with a pantheon of gods. There are ranks and hierarchies of them, some good and some bad, but all residing under a superior Great Invisible Spirit. The point of his presentation is to indicate that a minority of humans enjoy the potential to join with the greatest of these gods. Those are the "knowing" [Greek "gnosis"] of which Jesus is one and who "recruits" Judas to be another. Judas' assignment to "betray" Jesus to the authorities in order to restore him to the spirit realm, sets Judas apart from the other Apostles. They naturally resent this situation, but aren't "knowing" enough to change it. Ehrman reminds us that all the Apostles but Judas abandoned Jesus at the arrival of the arresting officers.
Gnosticism isn't for those seeking simple answers. It required the "knowing" to take a stance in direct contradiction to those accepting the Jewish god as paramount. Jesus does not make demands of his followers. Indeed, it's fundamental to Gnosticism that each individual find the route into the realm of the divine on their own. Over time, that would lead to clashes with those who sought a more hierarchical church system - the "proto-orthodox" who were later vindicated by Constantine. The early "Church Fathers" railed against Gnostic ideas - in fact, it is their writings that preserved the thoughts of the Gnostics in ranting against their ideas. Once in ascendency, the "orthodox" saw to it that Gnostic texts were destroyed. The Gospel of Judas, Ehrman reminds us, was known chiefly by a reference to it in the works of Irenaeus in his polemics against "heresies".
To Ehrman, The Gospel of Judas' importance lies in what it can contribute to our understanding of the early forms of Christianity - "Christianities". He leaves unaddressed the inevitable comparison with the doctrine of the Trinity, an issue that has split the faith numerous times. In fact, beyond describing how the Gnostics viewed their spirit realm, he avoids theological discussion. His aim here is to describe the history and words given in the newly found Gospel and put them in perspective. He does a fine job of that in language that must keep his students enthralled. It is a engrossing account at many levels, and deserves your close attention. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
Fascinating, informative and readable.......2007-06-12
Ehrman begins by relating the story of how the abused codex finally made it into the hands of experts who could preserve the ancient work and his own role in that authentication as well as discussing the gospel itself and its context in the ancient world. What is fascinating for those of us who are interested in Gnosticism is the way this text adds to the current growing understanding of the movement. Ehrman gives the historical context of the gospel and Gnosticism as well as presents some fascinating suggestions as to why Judas might have betrayed Jesus so long ago. This is a highly readable and informative work that I recommend for anyone interested in Gnosticism as well as the historical context of the Christian faith in its early centuries.
Scholarship, Intrigue and Adventure! Oh My!.......2007-06-08
While doing research for our own writing we have read a great many scholarly works, but we have rarely had the opportunity to enjoy material that does such an admirable job of combining impeccable scholarship with intrigue and adventure. In "The Lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot," Bart Ehrman invites the reader to join him in the delicious moment of discovery when he first sees the lost manuscript. He lays out the history of the document like a skilled novelist without sacrificing the scholarship his readers have come to expect. Ehrman further enlightens the reader with a review of early writings that document the steady downward spiral of Judas' reputation from disciple to monster. This is a book that is not to be missed by anyone interested in early Christianity, however, we must agree with several other reviewers who were disappointed by Ehrman's somewhat dismissive handling of Gnostic Christianity.
Ehrman points out that, "Some have argued that Jesus was principally a Jewish rabbi who taught others to love one another. Others have insisted that he was a political revolutionary out to overthrow the Roman Empire. Others have claimed that he urged a social revolution." Ehrman then goes on to establish his own theory, stating, "The most important thing to know about the historical Jesus is that he was a first-century Jew who lived in Palestine. The second most important thing to know is that, like so many other Palestinian Jews of his day, he held views of God, the world, and humans' place in it that were deeply and thoroughly apocalyptic." Rather than rigidly placing Jesus in any one of these categories, we could not help but ask if Jesus might be better served if we understand him as someone who went through many changes during his lifetime. Nothing in the scriptures, or Ehrman's research, precludes the possibility that Jesus could have begun his ministry with an apocalyptic view, and ended it as a Gnostic. This may explain why so many contradictory scenarios are presented in early Christian writings. Unfortunately, Ehrman remains true to his apocalyptic theory and fails to give credibility to the possibility of a Gnostic Jesus who was completely misunderstood by his apocalyptic followers.
There is one clear message that Ehrman threads through each of his very worthwhile books: There never was, and never will be, one Christianity. Ehrman points to the significance of the Gospel of Judas by stating, ". . .this text gives us additional hard evidence that Christianity in the early centuries of the church was remarkably diverse. . . and the boundaries between these Christian groups were not hard and fast." Whether we believe Judas to be betrayer or favored disciple, we cannot help but benefit if we use the material presented to see early Christianity in this light.

Book Description
George W. Bush came to the presidency in 2000 claiming to be the heir of Ronald Reagan. But while he did cut taxes, in most other respects he has governed in a way utterly unlike his revered predecessor, expanding the size and scope of government, letting immigration go unchecked, and allowing the federal budget to mushroom out of control.
Despite their strong misgivings, most conservatives remained silent during Bush’s first term. But a series of missteps and scandals, culminating in the ill-conceived nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, has brought this hidden rift within the conservative movement crashing to the surface.
Now, in what is sure to be the political book of the season, Bruce Bartlett lays bare the incompetence and profligacy of Bush’s economic policies. A highly respected Washington economist—and true-believing Reaganite—Bartlett started out as a supporter of Bush and helped him craft his tax cuts. But he was dismayed by the way they were executed. Reagan combined his tax cuts with fiscal restraint, but Bush has done the opposite. Bartlett thus reluctantly concluded that Bush is not a Reaganite at all, but an unprincipled opportunist who will do whatever he or his advisers think is expedient to buy votes.
In this sober, thorough, and utterly devastating book, Bartlett attacks the Bush Administration's economic performance root and branch, from the "stovepiping" of its policy process to the coercive tactics used to ram its policies through Congress, to the effects of the policies themselves. He is especially hard on Bush’s enormous new Medicare entitlement…and predicts that within a few years, Bush's tax cuts and unrestricted spending will produce an economic crisis that will require a major tax increase, probably in the form of a European-style VAT.
Bartlett has surprisingly kind words for Bill Clinton, whose record on the budget was far better than Bush’s. Whatever else one may think of him, Bartlett argues, Clinton cut spending, abolished a federal entitlement program, and left a budget surplus. By contrast, Bush has increased spending, created a massive entitlement program, and produced the biggest deficits in American history.
In fact, Bartlett concludes, Bush is less like Reagan than like Nixon: an arch-conservative Republican, bitterly hated by liberals, who vainly tried to woo moderates by enacting big parts of the liberal program. It didn't work then, and it won't work now—and may have similar harmful effects for the GOP.

Powerful critique of GWB not written by whiney liberal.......2007-06-02
Well written entertaining hard hitting book on the various failures of the Bush presidency.
This book is packed with facts and logic supporting the author's thesis that George W. Bush is not a conservative president and has done a bad job from a conservative perspective. Rather GWB has been a highly partisan Republican president in the genre of Richard Nixon in that he has pushed liberal policies like expansion of medicare benefits, pouring billions into educations, committing the troops to nation-building of a democracy (which no doubt will end up like Vietnam) in a place where US troops don't belong.
If you are a die-hard Bush fan or a liberal Bush-hater don't bother buying this book as it probably won't provide any enjoyment. But if you are an intelligent open-minded individual who appreciates a frank discussion of policy from the conservative viewpoint you should not be disappointed.
Well written critical summary of the G.W. Bush Years.......2007-05-20
This book by a Reagan insider reveals in stark detail Bush's hipocracy in using the conservative title. Bartlett shows him as an grandiose opportunist who believes he is guided by God, and making all the errors of judgement that stem from such absurd overconfidence.
Good, but..........2007-04-18
I hate Dubya as much has the next good liberal, but I found this book to be a bit tough to get through due to its focus on economic issues. Cleary, he can be similarly criticized for straying from conservative positions on a whole host of other issues, but the author never strays from economics (but to be fair, that is his area of expertise). At the end, he even veers off on some VAT tax tangent that has nothing to do with Bush.
It's not a bad book, but buyer beware.
An attack more in sorrow than in anger.......2007-02-23
This is a good book. As a political book it is well above average.
As an attack book it is one of the best because it deals with facts,
mostly, and usually identifies opinions as opinions.
We have 210 pages of text, divided into 11 chapters, mostly complaining about
what Bush did, but a lot of complaints about how he did it, and why.
There 35 pages of appendices and notes, documenting the "what" quite well,
and the "how" fairly well. The "why" seems not as well done, but better than
the average political attack book.
A common attack book strategy is to make a statement as a fact, and provide
a note reference. The reference turns out to be an opinion offered elsewhere,
sometimes by the same author. Another is broad labelling. A request for a
hardship deferral makes one a draft dodger. Not accepting a particular
theory espoused by a professor makes one anti-intellectual. These are
rare in Bartlett's book.
There are also 31 pages of end notes, 49 pages of references and a 14 page
index. You can check his claims. In most cases there are references to
both sides of an issue.
I also appreciated that Bartlett identified the political biases of think
tanks and publications.
There are some weaknesses in the book. Much of the subject matter involves
economics, a topic most readers find boring, intimidating, or both.
To aid the attack, Bush is compared against Clinton in some ways and
against Reagan in others. Bartlett gives Clinton credit for welfare reform.
He properly identifies the tax increases that partly offset the Reagan
tax cuts, but ignores the slowness of spending reductions. Bartlett
argues there will be a major tax increase, probably after Bush is gone,
then spends many pages supporting a value added tax (VAT) as the least
bad way to do it.
Some Republicans will hate the book because it attacks one of their own.
Bartlett got fired for writing it. Some Democrats will hate the book
because it does not accuse Bush of treason, rape, armed robbery, and
wearing ugly ties. This is clearly an attack book, but it seems to have
been written more in sorrow than in anger. The book is far more rational
and far less emotional than some of the reviews here.
Critique of the President from the Right.......2006-09-24
This is an interesting work. Many of the critical analyses of the Bush II Administration (George W. Bush as opposed to George H. W. Bush, referred to as Bush I below) have come from journalists or those on the left or from Democrats. This book is fascinating precisely because it is authored by a conservative, one who served in the Reagan White House and in the Bush I Treasury Department. In that, it is akin to Francis Fukuyama's critical analyses of neocons and the Administration's Nation-Building efforts. And, indeed, Bartlett paid a personal price for his criticisms--he lost his job.
He suggests that the Bush II Administration is simply not conservative. In fact, the first chapter's title exemplifies that theme: "I Know Conservatives and George W. Bush Is No Conservative." Among his contentions: the Bush II administration simply does not care about serious policy analysis; it is more concerned with attaining its goals. The chapter, entitled "The End of Serious Policy Analysis," quotes part of Ron Suskind's interview with a top Bush official (some opine that this quotation may come from Karl Rove himself): "You guys, the aide said, are 'in what we call the reality-based community.' Such people are defined, the aide went on, as those who 'believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernable reality.'" The aide went on, quoting Bartlett: "That's not the way the world works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. Any while you're studying that reality--judiciously as you will--we'll act again, creating other new realities. . . ."
Other chapters question the Bush II Administration for its tax cuts, its trade policy, why Enron serves as metaphor for Bush's economic policy, the budget (mirabile dictu, Bartlett suggests that Bill Clinton's policy is preferable to Bush II), and so on.
Precisely because this is a critique from the right, this becomes a very interesting volume to reflect upon. While sometimes the critique becomes a bit shrill, this is still worth looking at and thinking about.

A most intriguing series for readers from preteen on:.......2007-05-13
The Shadow Chidren series may be the modern alternative to The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Cherry Ames. The plot of each book-there are more than the four books of the boxed set-is captivating, as is the overall adventuresome goal of the series. My ten year old granddaughter introduced me to the Shadow Children after she had completed the first book. I both purchased and read all the books before giving them to her to make certain that all is wholesome. Parents and/or prospective readers be assured that the Shadow Children series will be enjoyed by everyone. Then, the variety of other books by Haddix will be enjoyed as well.
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!.......2007-04-08
My son (who is 13) has a hard time reading a complete book, due to his short attention span. A friend suggested this series of books to us. I couldn't be happier. This series is so interesting that he read all of the books within two weeks!!!! As a parent, I enjoyed them also! This is the best deal on the web for this set.
for parents too!.......2007-03-14
My 9-year-old daughter introduced me to this series, saying I had to read them. Well, I did, I'm now near the end of book 5, and they're riveting. The plot is well-written, unpredictable, tense and believable. I especially appreciate how Haddix depicts the struggles these kids go through as they make their decisions on how to act, and how ultimately they make the right choices. Not always, and that is shown as well. It is certainly written for young readers, so goes very fast for an adult reading, but thoroughly enjoyable. I keep wondering why nobody has made movies out of Haddix's books? This would be a great one. Don't push it aside thinking "It's a kid book." Give it a chance.
Can't put it down.......2007-02-05
I could not put these books down. They are short enough to read in one sitting, but still left me satisfied and pensive. The story never dragged and I found myself unable to keep from outwardly expressing fear, anger, relief, and shock.
These are books for everyone. The stories are entertaining with many twists and the plot is thought provoking as many books about futuristic societies tend to be.
slow at shipping.......2007-01-10
The books are fine, they were for my son and he loves them. But it took over a month to receive them. Very slow shipping.

What does it mean to save yourself?
Nina Idi -- a third child in a society where families are allowed only two children -- has been betrayed by the boy she loved, and arrested by the Population Police for exposing other alleged third children. Angry and confused, Nina knows only one thing for sure: She is innocent of the charges. But now she is faced with the most difficult choice of her life: Get three other prisoners to admit they are shadow children and be spared herself, or refuse to cooperate and be killed.
The options are clear. The choice, Nina discovers, is not....

Among The Betrayed by Margret Perterson Haddix.......2007-03-15
Nina is among the many shadow children in her school. She has done nothing wrong in her life, except for being illegal. One day, she woke up in a prison cell, handcuffed to the ground. She finds out that her beloved, Jason, has now betrayed her. Later on she meets a new character who she has called "The Hating Man". He tells her that she has to help him with something or she will soon be killed. Her task is to go into another cell with three other shadow children. She has to find out info about them and see if the truly are shadow children. Later on, she starts talking to them and they become kind of close. But, they won't tell her anything because they think they are being watched by hidden cameras. Which they weren't. "The Hating Man" was secretly feeding her humungous thanks giving meals, bribing her to try harder. She does'nt have that kind of cold heart, how evil. If he were to find out they were shadow children, he would kill them in an instant. One day while she was talking to him, a gaurd burst through the door. He was holding his neck, the gaurd had been poisoned. "The Hating Man" wasnt paying attention to her. Oddly enough, the keys were sitting right there on the table. She used this opportunity to escape, she grabbed the keys and ran. She opened up the cell and got the three kids. They all escaped together. No one even came looking for them. She told them about the school that she thought was safe, so they could temporarly live there. The younger kids actually knew how to get there. Once they got there, they finally settled in. She discovered a planted garden behind the school. They stole fruits and vegtables during the night. One night, Nina went to pick some more and some one pounced on her. It was Lee. She was dragged off to Mr. Hendricks house not too far away. After talking to him, she saw something. It was "The Hating Man". He was actually Jen Talbot's dad under disguise. The whole jail thing and escape was planned for the safety of them. She had been set up just to see if she could be trusted. Later on she found out everything and was glad she was safe. Well, for now. She later actually agreed to help them. Had Nina just agreed to help fight the population police? Yes, she had. The settings were in the jail building, outside of the Hendricks School, and inside Mr. Hendrick's home. This book was fantastic, and I would definitly recomend this book to anybody that I know!

Among the Betrayed.......2006-12-08
So we're three books into Haddix's Shadow Children series. The first book ended with Luke leaving the world he's grown accustomed to. The second book ended with Luke finally accepting the new world he's been thrust into. With the passing of each book we've been left to wonder, 'What's next for Luke?' We are not given those answers quite yet in book three, Among the Betrayed, and that might annoy some series fans (it surely did my 5th grade class at first) who've grown fond of Luke. But give Nina Idi some time. I promise she'll grow on you.
Haddix decided to take a step away from Luke Garner and show us how the Population Law is affecting another third child, Nina Idi. Nina has been captured by the Population Police and been given an ultimatum: either help them by deceiving a group of third children she's just met, or be executed. After befriending the three third children she's supposed to betray, she realizes that the choice is not as easy as she'd like it to be.
My biggest gripe with the first two books is how slowly they begin. A lot of time is spent describing the world through Luke's very sheltered eyes. To make Luke's transformation seem realistic, this has to be done but it can cause many yawns while reading. Obviously, I was scared when I was introduced to Nina, imagining another one-third of a book being wasted while we were getting to know another sheltered third child. But that's not the case. Not the case at all.
Haddix has learned from her mistakes. She makes the transition from Luke to Nina rather swiftly. The story starts out with high tension and doesn't let up until readers are brought to the light. It took my 5th graders a while (they missed Luke) but eventually Nina won them over. It works because Haddix doesn't tell us about Nina all at once. She lets the secrets of her past come out slowly, over the course of the book. Haddix loves action and it's a good thing, because it's Nina's human-like reactions to the drama that unfolds that causes us to care for her. She's in pretty deep, and you want her to make it out alive.
I'm not going to praise Haddix for making any literary masterpieces that will stand the test of time, but I'm hooked and so are my 5th graders and that has to be a good sign. So far the books are getting better and better, but here's hoping we get back to Luke and find out what he's been up to.

It's not us v. them.......2007-07-23
I first read Ms. Hoff-Sommers book with some skepticism, after all I had never met the kinds of feminists she was accusing of hijacking feminism. But my opinion of the book changed when I went to Duke University and took a class on Feminism and Ecology and was attacked by the instructors because I am apparently a sell-out to patriarchy, simply because I happened to marry someone who works for an organization they were against. This is the play-book for gender difference feminists.
Ms. Hoff-Sommers points out in her book that gender difference feminists claim their "special natures," a reflection back to 19th century ideals of womanhood, as a reason for their determiniation to set up an us v. men world.
But the truth of the matter is that all people must learn to live cooperatively and equally in order to move toward a society where men and women can fully appreciate their differences, similarities and their collective strengths. Ultimately, equality does not mean everyone feels exactly the same on every issue, as gender difference feminists try to enforce. Rather, feminism is about educating women, allowing them to make their own decisions, even when we don't always agree with them. No one wins in an us v. them game, and that is what this book tries to point out.
You will have to deal with someangry rants in this book, but they are the passionate frustration of a woman trying desperately to remind women that our strength comes through unity, not through selling out groups of people who don't agree with everything we have to say.
Fantastic, well-reasoned book from an enlightened woman.......2007-07-09
For proof of Mrs Hoff-Sommers assertions in this informative and very readable book one need look no further than the authors of all the previous 1 star reviews. They are the perfect reason why we ought to listen closely to people like Mrs Hoff-Sommers, if only in the hope of saving future generations from being similarly affected. It is clear that few of them have turned a page of this book. True, Equity Feminism is an oxymoron in the class of Marxist Capitalism. But her demonstration that its aims were noble, and vastly different from later Gender Feminism are convincing, as are her reasons why a once noble but long since misguided movement has resulted in our society producing the kind of people it is. Buy and read this interesting book, and don't be put off by the so-called reviewers below who condemn without reading.
hmm.......2007-04-17
I just find it interesting that the previous two reviewers who gave the books accolades had male names. Just an observation. I pretty much agree with what some of the previous, disgruntled or disappointed reviewers had to say (and they said it so much more eloquently than i feel capable of at the moment).
It has some valid points--picking on one group and using them as a scapegoat is bad and some people do get feminism confused with man-hating, even in their own heads, yes, but overall--i cannot uphold this study.
Simply tedious.......2007-03-25
By the time I got to chapter five I must confess that the tedium got to me and from then I skimmed the remainder of this book. Looking at the other reviews it is clear that Sommers will affect no ones opinions. She is clearly a conservative who has done well for herself so is satisfied that a few achievements by her generation and previous generations (eg the vote, access to education and public office) is all that is necessary to put right everything that has gone before or could be faced by women today.
Her own argument is at least as flawed as those she critcizes. We certainly need to reflect on some points but she certainly has avoided reflecting on where her so-called 'gender feminists' are coming from. It is a very selfish diatribe. It also comes across as very naive, as if the author has spent her life in a kind of Stepford wife world but with her career needs satisfied. One can almost see the picket fence and Mr bluebird on her shoulder as she prunes the roses under a clear blue sky.
Seriously, I think both sides of this argument will inevitably flounder to some extent. What has happened for women in recent decades is unprecented and so it is perfectly reasonable for it to take a long time for women to find their feet in this new world and discover who they are for themselves without such formidable constraints as in the past. Sommers does not want anything more to change as her needs have been satisfied and perhaps the self-interest of sons naturally becomes the self-interest of their mother.
Interestingly, the Irish Examiner today reported a 90% increase in the number of incidents of domestic violence reported during the soccer World Cup last year. On October 16 last year the UK Daily Mail reported that domestic violence rose by up to 31% on Englands World Cup match days. Funny how these 'hoaxes' spread!!! Lucky I was reading this book today so I knew not to take any notice!
I cannot recommend this book because it is so flawed and ultimately tedious. For a philosopher its standard is way below what would be expected.
Stella Rama.......2007-02-25
After reading the book, the only woman I can think of that has betrayed women is Christina Hoff-Sommers. A disappointment indeed!
Book Description
A hugely controversial work that exposes a series of scandals from Oliver North to the British royal family, The Secret War Against the Jews reveals as much about political corruption inside Western intelligence as it does about Israel. Using thousands of previously top-secret documents and interviews with hundreds of current and former spies, Loftus and Aarons, both veteran investigators, Nazi-hunters, and authors, present a compelling narrative. The authors demonstrate that numerous Western countries, especially the United States and Great Britain, have conducted repeated and willful spying missions on Palestine and later Israel over many decades. While on the surface these two countries and others profess to be ardent allies of Israel, they work, in fact, through their intelligence services to betray Israel's secrets to the Arabs. Their motive: oil and multinational profits, which must be attained at any price through international covert policies. The pageant of characters appearing in this narrative is vast and shocking. This is not only a compelling work of history, but also a volume whose grave allegations will be debated for years to come.

The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-08-24
This was a difficult book. I bought it because of its promised research between the wars and the American Nazi connection. I wanted to see if the "spy" business corroborated information that I have been discovering with regards to the funding of Hitler. It did. I was also impressed by the backgrounds of the authors. The remainder of the book dealing with after World War II, I can not vouch for. From my perspective we will just have to wait and see. All the allegations are possible but only future historical investigations will supply the truth. The book kept my interest and I read every page but its scope and deviousness is really beyond me. I still haven't made up my mind whether I am convinced enough to buy the authors other book about the Catholic Church. I may.
Secret War Against The Zionists.......2007-03-21
After having read Loftus's and Aarons's book, I realized its major flaw -- the title of their book: "The Secret War Against The Jews." To be fair and objective toward the proper analysis of modern history, the title of their book should have been: "The Secret War Against The Zionists!"
The authors seem to imply throughtout their book that ALL Jews are Zionists and that ALL Zionists are Jews (not true); and that ALL Jews believe they need a homeland (Israel) where they can be FREE to be Jews, as if the United States and the Statue Of Liberty never existed! (It's easy to prove that more Jews died of anti-semitism in Israel, in the last 60 years, than in the whole 250 year history of the United States! To imply that the U.S. is not safe for Jews (to be Jews) is, in and of itself, un-patriotic and anti-American!)
Before 1930, the Zionist's greatest enemies were not the anti-semites, but the vast multitude of world Jewry itself! Most Jews (who were essentially non-Zionists) were content to live in the nations of their birth. Those who were forced to migrate, because of anti-semitic pogroms (e.g., Russia and Eastern Europe), preferred to migrate to Western Europe and the United States, not Palestine! The Zionist's major dilemma (at the time, pre-1933), was a major lack of Jewish VOLUNTEERISM to go to Palestine! Without a Jewish people, there can be no Jewish state (i.e., Israel). This is one of the greatest 'epiphanies' of modern history, which is a major factor avoided in John Loftus's and Mark Aarons's book! When mass VOLUNTEERISM (Jews for Palestine) doesn't work, how might fanatical Zionists accomplish their goal of creating and populating the state of Israel??
The real secret war against "The Jews" came from the Zionists (themselves) and their (e.g., Stern Gang) covert collaboration with anti-semites (e.g., helping to bring the Nazis to power) in order to create a mass refugee class of Jews (non-volunteers) to go to Palestine. Without Hitler, there could be no Israel! Thus, the Holocaust which resulted in 6 million Jews dying and the creation of tens of thousands of surviving refugees with nowhere to go but Palestine! As a result, Western leaders tried to stop the forced migration of refugee Jews, by Zionists, to Palestine. The foreign policy establishment of both Britain and the United States (then & now) waged a secret war against the Zionists to keep them from destabilizing the Middle East by provoking the oil cartels' Islamic partners on the eve of a profitable 'Petroleum Era!'
There is also an important analogy that Loftus and Aaron avoided in their book! In the 1960's, Blacks (e.g., Martin Luther King, et al) fought for their HUMAN and CIVIL RIGHTS as citizens, here, in the United States. The Civil Rights Movement was NOT a campaign for the "right of Blacks to emigrate to a nation of their own, where Blacks can be safe to be Black!"
There will never be peace in the Middle East until people learn that there is a distinct difference between anti-semitism (racist bigotry against Jews) and anti-Zionism (a political campaign against Israeli national , ethnic, religious supremism); and that there is a common denominator (factor) that binds most Zionists with the objectives of most anti-semites (with the exception of the Arabs, of course): they would love for all Jews to go live in Israel!
The greatest suspense story of treachery against 20th Century Jews .......2007-01-11
This book is filled with the most incredible documented secret and unknown facts of treason agains the entire Jewish people around the world by "civilized" countries during the 20th Century and should be a required history textbook for all schools. It is also one of the best suspense and spy books ever written. I have already purchased 7 copies and given them as gifts and will continue to do so in the future.
Can the past be prologue?.......2006-08-31
Having been involved in intelligence work early in my life and having kept watching intel shenanigans, a book about the secret war against the Jews got my attention and I had an opportunity to read and research much of its contents. I found answers to questions I had not found since the creation of Israel. Why would such a widely divergent group of political leaders suddenly see eye to eye and approve something as controversial and futile as creating a Jewish State surrounded by masses of Arabs seeking their destruction? It is amazing how the founders of Israel were able to use the weaknesses of these world leaders to effectively blackmail them. In view of the current situation in Lebanon, Syria and Iran it was very educational to learn about the USS Liberty betrayal and subsequent conspiracy to hide the facts.
This is a disturbing yet revealing book that makes you wonder about how much you really know about the machinations and motivations of world leaders as compared to their public pronouncements and soundbites. If you are a serious reader blessed, or cursed, with sufficient cynical curiosity, you should read the book and judge its accuracy for yourself. I am warning you, however, you may have sleepless nights realizing how we have been and are being misled by a cynical shadow intel establishment.

Female eating disorders are as complicated and multifaceted as females themselves. Fortunately, Kathryn J. Zerbe, a pioneer in the field of eating disorders, does not try to present one cause or one cure. The Body Betrayed delves into the full spectrum of factors contributing to eating disorders, such as family dynamics, cultural messages, nutrition, sexual abuse, and links with chemical dependency. Zerbe's discussion of treatment is equally even-handed: she addresses the successes of psychotherapy as well as the use of antidepressants. The compassionate wisdom infused throughout offers solace as well as the facts. As an all-inclusive primer, The Body Betrayed is an important resource for eating-disorder patients and their families.
Book Description
Clearly and sensitively written, this exciting book covers all aspects of diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders. Zerbe, an internationally esteemed feminist psychiatrist, interlaces intelligent discussion with stories about individuals who have valiantly, though often at first reluctantly, engaged in recovery. Particularly appropriate for parents and loved ones who want a thorough understanding of eating disorders, The Body Betrayed specifically addresses mother/daughter and father daughter relationships, as well as explaining how a child with an eating disorder affects family dynamics.
Also included in this in-depth look at eating disorders are chapters on the impact of sexual and physical abuse, the relationship between eating disorders and chemical dependency, medical complications, the biology of nutrition, pregnancy, athletics, treatment, and much more.

An Informative, Top-Notch Resource for Any Library!.......2004-07-08
I struggled with bulimia for years and this book was one of several books which helped me on my road to recovery. The author is sensitive and cares deeply about men and women struggling with eating disorders and she delves deep into the causes as well as treatments. Another book that helped was the Minirth-Meier Clinic book on Eating Disorders. Fantastic resources for anyone dealing with this often deadly disease.
Perfect Combo of Information and Emotion.......2002-05-06
Too often, books written by professionals on mentall illnesses, particularly eating disorders, are harsh and technical. One could easily get lost in the psychiatric jargon and cold symptomology. However, Zerbe shines in this volume that welcomes patients, professionals, and laypersons alike. Her compassion for her troubled clients is obvious, as is her enlightened knowledge of her subject. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of this growing epidemic.
The Body Betrayed.......2000-11-07
The Body Betrayed is an outstanding book! Kathryn J. Zerbe writes with much knowledge and compassion about the many complicated aspects of the different disorders, and devotes a lot of time to the discussion of dually-diagnosed patients. She gives careful analysis to the varied influences that effect the onset of these illnesses, and shares some of the real life experiences from her treatment facility. This is a very detailed, but readable book for patients, family, friends, clinicians, and anyone wanting to know more about eating disorders.
Compelling, intelligent and complex.......2000-07-23
This book might not be your best first introduction to eating disorders, but if you are somewhat familiar with the subject, Kathryn J. Zerbe adds tons of new insights.
Especially helpful are the sections on eating disorders accompanied by other psychiatric problems, and the sections on the relationships between the mother/daughter and the father/daughter in connection to developing eating disorders.
The writing is on a fairly high and intelligent level, but Zerbe never becomes caught up in psycho mumbo-jumbo that is beyond the scope of a lay person.
This is a wonderful book!.......2000-07-18
This book is informative and tremendously educational. The Body Betrayed is one of the best books out there. The author touches on almost every aspect of eating disorders and how a sufferer uses the disorder to make sense of the chaos their lives have become. They educate you on signs, symptoms, and causes, as well as treatment, comorbidity, and relapse. It is well written and some of the best material I have found to date.
Book Description
The recent atrocities in Bosnia-Herzegovina have stunned people throughout the world. With Holocaust memories still painfully vivid, a question haunts us: how is this savagery possible? Michael A. Sells answers by demonstrating that the Bosnian conflict is not simply a civil war or a feud of age-old adversaries. It is, he says, a systematic campaign of genocide and a Christian holy war spurred by religious mythologies.
This passionate yet reasoned book examines how religious stereotyping--in popular and official discourse--has fueled Serbian and Croatian ethnic hatreds. Sells, who is himself Serbian American, traces the cultural logic of genocide to the manipulation by Serb nationalists of the symbolism of Christ's death, in which Muslims are "Christ-killers" and Judases who must be mercilessly destroyed. He shows how "Christoslavic" religious nationalism became a central part of Croat and Serbian politics, pointing out that intellectuals and clergy were key instruments in assimilating extreme religious and political ideas.
Sells also elucidates the ways that Western policy makers have rewarded the perpetrators of the genocide and punished the victims. He concludes with a discussion of how the multireligious nature of Bosnian society has been a bridge between Christendom and Islam, symbolized by the now-destroyed bridge at Mostar. Drawing on historical documents, unpublished United Nations reports, articles from Serbian and Bosnian media, personal contacts in the region, and Internet postings, Sells reveals the central role played by religious mythology in the Bosnian tragedy. In addition, he makes clear how much is at stake for the entire world in the struggle to preserve Bosnia's existence as a multireligious society.

Well balanced and true.......2007-02-19
One more proof in numerous historical documents discussing the genocide and atrocities against Bosnian population. It points the finger in the right direction of the culprits. The book provides plenty of evidence that the genocide was committed by Serbian forces with blessings from Serbia and Montenegro.
More than The Bridge Betrayed!.......2004-10-10
Sells has been know to write interesting books covering issues and clashes between Christians and Muslims, due to his Serbian heritege and his background as a Professor and chairperson of the Department of Religion at Haverford College, in the US. He critisices his own in a very tough and honest way. Even if some fanatics will claim that he only speaks about the horrible acts of crime conducted by Serbians and Croats.
Sells gives us a detailed look into the, by the Serbs, created mythology. I say created, some of you may say revised, but in any case it hade the purpose to seduce it's own pepole to commit the most serious war crimes since the Soviet gulag camps or the concentration camps of the third rich.
Serbs use the death of Prince Lazar at the infamous battle in Kosovo between the Serbs and the Ottomans, Muslims have since been considered Christ killers and the primary target of Serb hatred. You can have your own opinions about this, but fact is that the Serbs used this myth to put a spell on there own people. Much like Adolf Hitler.
Sells writes in a way that many people might find hard to understand. Even if the book is only 150 pages it takes quite a while to get through. It is packed with information and it is not happy reading. It breaks your heart to hear about all the massacres that took place in Europe. As Europeans we should know better then let it happen again. And even as I knew about many of what Sells is writing, due to my background.
The West didn't do anything about the situation before it was too late. The reason to this may be that they didn't want to argue with Russia in imbalance that only needed something to fuel a last fight against the capitalists. Comments, by Sells, about secret NATO supply stores can't be taken seriously due to the level of speculations surrounded the breakup of the Warzawa pact. Fact is that Sovjet hade huge supply stores in the former Yugoslavia. And Serbian leaders made sure to take control over those, at an early stage of the conflict.
It is hard for a European to hear that those genocidal theories were used again, didn't we learn anything??? The Orthodox church were involved in those crimes and that is something I didn't expect, but that's why we are protestants in Sweden, not fundamentalists.
In all, a really good book that will open your eyes to the crimes committed by people that should know better. Serbians and Croatians was involved in World war II and it seems that people that suffered want revenge, much like Israel...

Awsome.......2004-05-04
I just finished reading this book and it was so intriguing that I finished it in one sitting. It will open your eyes, on the matter of Bosnia, so big that you'll be able to see the craters on Uranus, if there is any over there. Read it!
Solid.......2004-04-26
Sells gives us a solid account of the war in Bosnia in the early 1990's. However, I do have some criticisms. While he covers in quite abit of detail Croat and especially Serb religious fanaticism and violence, he only mentions the Bosniac's own atrocities on a couple of occasions.
The other problem is that the book is abit too short, when you see the price of the book (150 pages of actual text, excluding footnotes).
Indispensable.......2004-02-13
Although of Serbian origin, Michael Sells offers a detailed, unbiased and honest analysis of Serbian nationalism and Christian fundamentalism. Sells argues that Christian mythology and extremism helped enable the annihilation of an entire people. Driven by an ancient hatred for the Turks which dates back to the rule of the Ottoman Empire, the Serbs have always viewed Muslims as their primary adversary. Today, many Serbian nationalists deliberately associate Bosnian Muslims with the Ottomans even though no such link exists. However, this is sophisticated propaganda, the goal of which is to mislead the Serbian people and to induce hatred in them. This strategy turned out to be very successful because it unleashed the extermination of Bosnian Muslims. Numerous testimonies offered by the survivors of the Bosnian war lend considerable support to Sells' thesis, namely that Christian extremism played a pivotal role in justifying the genocide of Bosnian Muslims. For example, many survivors reported being called "bloody Turks" by Serbs soldiers. Other similar derogatory slurs were frequently used by Serb soldiers, revealing great hatred for Muslims. Moreover, a systematic destruction of mosques and other Islamic architecture indicate that the Serbs wanted to obliterate every single trace of Islam in Bosnia. The fact that every single mosque has been destroyed in Republika Srpska speaks for itself. Conversely, many churches remain intact in the area controlled by the Bosnian government. In point of fact, only a few churches have been destroyed. It needs to be pointed out that Croats also purposely targeted historical monuments, as is evident in their destruction of Stari Most, the infamous old bridge in Mostar, the symbolic significance of which cannot be overstressed. For many years, the bridge had symbolized co-existence and a multiethnic society. By destroying the bridge, the Croat nationalists sent a clear message, namely that co-existence was not feasible. Christian fundamentalism and propaganda are also highly evident in literary works of many Christian writers. A novelist and a recipient of Nobel Prize, Ivo Andric, depicted Muslims as primitive and intransigent extremists whose principal goal was to create an Islamic state in Bosnia, clearly oblivious to the fact that Bosnia was a secularized society. Many renowned Serbian authors openly express similar views, one of which is Vuk Draskovic, known for his bigotry, parochialism and Islamophobia. Paradoxically, few attempts are made in Serbia to criticize these preposterous let alone distorted assertions, the sole purpose of which is to defame the adherents of t
