Spicy romantic adventure.......2007-08-16
After humiliating herself when she offered her virginity to hunky Brock Denton only to be turned down twice, Kat Spencer watched her unrequited obsession leave town, never to return. A decade later, she escapes to her father's private island to prepare for her upcoming nuptials while her bridal party is in Vegas. Brock crashes into her island paradise, bringing smugglers and danger in his wake. And reigniting a passion that Kat thought was long buried. Brock is now an FBI agent investigating a ring of smugglers of Central American artifacts. Her boat blown to smithereens, the duo must wait it out for five days until her friends realize she is missing and come looking for her. In between dodging bullets and Brock's many advances, Kat's resolves melt. But with danger possibly returning to the island, can Brock get the woman he resisted for so long safely back to Florida.
Blake sure knows how to write passion. She smartly makes readers wait and let's the tension build up between the characters, and then it's one sizzling and fun ride to the end. Realistic dialogue, plenty of action and thrills, great chemistry, and flawless writing make this a first rate romantic adventure on the spicier side.
much better than I expected.......2007-01-04
This book is such an easy read and a guilty pleasure. When I started it, I was a little hesitant...the characters seemed very flat at first and I really thought that if Brock kept calling Kat "kitten" the whole book it would drive me crazy! I'm glad I stuck with it, though, because I really enjoyed this book. The characters got more depth through each page. The pace of the book picked up a lot about 100 pages through, with suspense and steamy sex scenes. If you are looking to read a really fun, hot, mindless book then you'll love it! I ended up really liking both characters by the end of the book, which I didn't expect at all.
Lots of action and steamy love scenes.......2006-12-18
SWEPT AWAY by Toni Blake
December 17, 2006
Amazon rating 3.5/5
"Ten years ago on her birthday, teen Katrina Spencer tried to seduce Brock Denton (who was twenty-two years old at the time), thinking he wouldn't be able to resist her. But Brock said no, and ruined what she expected to be her best birthday yet.
Now Katrina is about to marry Ian, a conservative accountant who works at her father's art gallery. Katrina has curbed her wild streak and is ready to settle down. She works for her father and creates beautiful pottery on the side, but she isn't happy. Instead of heading to Las Vegas for her bridal shower, she hides out on her family's private island off the coast of Florida, trying to sort out her life. No one knows she's there except her best friend.
FBI agent Brock Denton is at sea, working undercover, attempting to capture a ring of art smugglers who have been stealing Guatemalan artifacts and selling to private collectors. Unfortunately, carelessness reveals his true identity. His life in danger, he jumps ship and swims to the closest island. Of course he encounters Kat napping on the beach. Brock brings danger to Katrina's refuge, but does his best to protect her, as they hide from the pursuing smugglers." - Complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton
This was a book that will keep you reading into the night, and Toni Blake does a great job with the writing. However, I felt that the subplot involving Kat's mother didn't belong in this book, and should have been eliminated before the book went to print. SWEPT AWAY is a good beach read with a lot of action and sensual love scenes.
A fabulous read.......2006-10-09
Brock Denton was undercover and about to bust a smuggling ring wide open when his cover was blown and he found himself stranded on an island with the woman of his dreams, literally. Ever since the night she'd offered herself to him, Katrina Spencer had been the woman he fantasized about. When he was stuck undercover with hours to kill, she was who he thought of; now that he was on the island with her, he could only hope that they could turn his dreams into reality.
Katrina Spencer had bailed on her friends and their plans of a bachelorette party to escape to her family's uninhabited island and try to reconnect with herself. She found herself thinking about that night years ago when she'd thrown aside inhibitions and propositioned the darkly handsome Brock Denton. She remembered the shame when she'd been turned down and how he'd never been far from her fantasies since. Now that he's here, within reach, Katrina has to fight everything to be true to her fiancé.
Swept Away is a compelling mix of clichéd romance and truly deep emotions. With a hero who doesn't know how to love and a heroine who's daddy's little girl, there were a lot of moments in this book that I was frustrated with it, but I kept coming back to the love, the hate, and the fear that was effortlessly woven into the story. By the time I finished Swept Away, I no longer thought of the plot devices as clichés, but as tried and true romantic ingredients. I have never been happier than now that I've continued to read a book even when the characters and plot frustrated me. Brock was a fantastic bad boy and never really lost his edge while Kat truly shone as the heroine in this book. Her sheer strength of will was amazing and the sexual tension between the two of them sent shivers down my spine. I have to say brava Ms. Blake, brava.
This book will sweep you of your feet!.......2006-10-09
Katrina Spencer have been looking forward to settling down and form a family, the only thing missing in the relationship with the man she is set to marry in a week is love and passion. That's why instead of going to Vegas to celebrate her Bachelorette party with her friends, she decides she wants to escape to her private island and prepare herself for what the future holds. Then a man from her past suddenly shows up on her beach. The one that hurt her so bad years ago that made her give up her dreams of a fairy tale. Now he is here in the flesh and she doesn't know what to do with all the conflicting emotions inside her, but one thing is for sure he is trouble with capital T and in mayor trouble, the kind that is putting both their lives in danger.
Brock Denton cannot believe his luck when he arrives at this island and finds the woman that still haunts his dreams and fantasies. The one he let escape when he was young, and the only one that makes his heart beat faster. He is no longer the kid from the wrong side of the tracks and is determined to seduce Kat but she is fighting him tooth and nail, its not that he wants to marry her, is just that its not right that she is settling for less than what she deserves and he want her to have that with him.
In this romance Toni Blake weaves a passionate, sexy story full of suspense, steam and passion that will get your heart beating harder and faster!

If you like Harry Potter, you'll love this series!.......2005-12-10
At the ages of 7-9, I was a very sick little girl. After coming home from getting stuck by needles at the doctor's office, my mom bought me this book. I think I finished the book in just under 2 days. I just couldn't put it down! It has everything; adventure, romance, drama, magic, and of course... unicorns! What an escape for anyone with an active imagination! This was a dose of girl-power and courage I really needed. As an adult, there are still lessons I can use in my grown up life. In a way I STILL want to be Sheila! I was lucky enough to obtain all 6 books. I urge everyone to do the same... it's worth every penny!

I am now almost done with college and have just rediscovered this series which was my favorite to read as a child and continues to be to this day. These books are filled with adventure, mystery, magic, love, strength, and beauty. You can't help but be swept away by your imagination as you read these books. While reading about all that these characters endure, attempt, fail, and accomplish you can't help but share their adventures. This series is one that people of any age can enjoy.
I still remember these books!.......2004-07-19
I wanted to be just like Sheila when I grew up. I even listened to a few Bon Jovi songs because of her (I was 8 when these books came out). I just recently figured out the name of the books (I had forgotten them) and now i'm trying to find them again to reread them. I still remember the book cover illustrations too!
A Magnificent Book!.......2004-07-08
This series is the magnificent books that everyone MUST SEE! I am now currently working but I still miss this series a lot since I read them when I am 10 years old. I'm glad I can finally buy the series. Miss them a lot.

Waiting for the next one.......2007-09-06
I too, read this series when I was younger and although 15+ years have passed, they remain my favorite series of books. I have been eagerly awaiting the re-release of these books and will purchase them again, as an adult, for a quick, fun read.
I definitely recommend them for someone who's introducing their teenager to reading. I hope they get sucked into the story as much as I did.
Beloved fantasy stories.......2007-01-13
I first read these books as a 7-year-old second grader. I still have the entire series lying around somewhere. Reading them as a child, I was absolutely enchanted. I re-read them as an adult, and they are still captivating.
These stories are absolutely excellent for young readers, particularly young girls, who want a great role model. Sheila is courageous, strong, and innovative; I love her creative mind. (Wait until you see how she fends off the first perceived enemies in the "other world"!)
Whether you're a parent looking for something to read to/with a child, or an adult fantasy lover, you will enjoy these tales. You can probably find the original six novels for sale used, too. (I was always hoping they would come out with more :)
Wonderful Book.......2006-08-10
I absolutely love these books. I only found the firt two at a clearence book store in the mall, and I truly fell in love with the books. Granted, they are more for young preteens than teenagers, but those of you who love a great fantasy story, this is a series for you. They should really put these books back into print, it would really be worth it if they would. So many people would love them, and I really hope publishers make them available again soon. I only have the first three, but have been going through pains to get the rest, seeing as how they are all so expensive these days. Keep looking though, it would really be worth your while if you could bye the books.
About Time!.......2006-06-04
It's about time that they got around to print Secret of the Unicorn queen again. I love these books. They are the perfect adventure fantasy books for young adults. A little romance, some fighting and good triumphs over evil like any good tale. While they were printed over 10 years ago, they have never gone out of fad. Now all we have to do is wait till the other books come out in print too.
An underrated series.......2005-09-30
I read the 'Secret of the Unicorn Queen' many years ago when they were first released, I adored them then and I'm glad to see that things that I loved then are still present now.
The series follows a young teenage girl name Sheila who has a pretty normal life, the only thing out of the ordinary is her relationship with Dr. Rite an eccentric scientist.
When a accident happens involving his affectionate cat and a untested invention Sheila finds herself in the world of Arren, where unicorns are real, magic exists. She meets a group of women determined to free the land from a tyrant. Sheila joins them and can't help but get caught up in the fight.
While the book doesn't break any barriers and doesn't bring anything new to the genre it's still a solidly written story with likable characters, and engaging plot and even a few laughs.
Though intended for younger readers I think this series has appeal for older ones as well and not just as nostalgia.

Great Book!!!! Love it!!.......2007-09-12
This was a true page turner. The book grabs you from page one with Julia's attempt to kidnap Deverell and I truly could not put it down once I had started.
Julia and Deverell are two very likeable characters. The sexual tension that they shared was very strong and very believable. Julia is unable to resist Deverell even though she believes (wrongly) that he was the cause of her brother's death. It was also interesting to see the development of the secondary romance.
The characters were all very well developed. Some of the dialogue will have you laughing out loud.
Overall the book is very well written and if you have never read Ms. Camp's works, you need to give her a try. You will definitely enjoy it.

Soap Opera style love story.......2007-08-07
I enjoyed the story of the two gals meeting, falling in love and weathering the cyclone. The book, however, is long and sometimes tedious with requent repetitions in the thoughts and words of the charactors. The slowness of the action is very much like a daily soap opera. I found myself wishing the book would move a little faster.
Galveston 1900: Swept Away.......2006-07-24
Crist has written another keeper.
Again, there were some sluggish spots. But this book was historical in nature as well as telling the life of lesbians in the 1900s.
This book had me laughing in places, disliking characters in places, and crying in others. I enjoyed Betsy and Angel and their heroics.
It had everything a person could ask for: humor, sex, mystery, subplots, etc.
Crist's book have some girth to them. I can't sit down and get thru them in a few hours.
I'm looking forward to her next one.
By the way, I'm not sure I've ever seen a bibliography completed in a lesbian novel. :o)
Writing that makes you quite envious.......2006-06-29
To be different from the 'norm' makes things very difficult for anyone. All manner of unexpected hardships can occur, most of which the rest of the community, large or small, can easily turn a blind eye to. Now place the difference in a historical context where there is even less as a chance that there would be a chance for people willing to come together and help those different.
But in Linda Crist's novel, Galveston 1900: Swept Away, we find that there are people who do care and refuse to allow the status quo to continue. There is an evidence that even within the outcasts of a whore, lesbians, orphans, and an abused woman, that a community is formed inside of the town of Galveston see what is happening and is willing to change to protect the social outcasts simply because there is no one else able to do so. That topic in itself is heartwarming.
Crist begins with the first love of a woman who has the fortune of being over looked as a woman as she goes about doing her job on the port. As the author weaves in the other layers of the story, the parts never feel extraneous or confusing.
The theme of community helping is strung through the entire book and never seems contrived. It gives a reader a sense of hope. I have found myself re-reading portions of this book often, definitely not a book I regret buying at all.
More than just a fascinating romance.......2006-05-23
There are stories you just want to see go on and on and on and you hate to reach the last page of the book. For me these are stories like ,Tiopa KI Lakota' from D. Jordan Redhawk, the `Gun'-series from Lori L. Lake and the latest one now: `Galveston 1900' from Linda Crist.
Linda Crist's book ,The bluest eyes in Texas' was an enjoyable read but ,Galveston 1900' is not just a good book but an outstanding historic novel with a fascinating love story between two women.
I just love the way the author takes her time and draws the relationship between these two woman without getting too mushy. Beside that Linda Crist manages to put the reader into a time machine. She does a great job in describing the society and the fixed behavior in that society, which gives the novel even more authenticity.
On top of all of this there is still the story about the hurricane which nearly destroys all of Galveston and makes escaping for our two heroines a really tough thing.
This is definitely one of the best books I've read so far. Since I am from Germany and have a lot of friends which find it hard to read English books I would love to see that book published in Germany and would hope for a really good translator for this job.
Outstanding historical romance.......2005-11-19
From hopelessness to hopefulness and filled with as much love as there is hate, Galveston 1900: Swept Away by Linda Crist has what it takes to be a great historical love story.
Set in the months preceding the tropical cyclone that devastated Galveston in 1900, Rachel Travis works on the docks of the second busiest port in the U.S. while she moonlights as a bartender. Rachel has known she was different from other women ever since she ran away from home 8 years previously at age 15. She dresses like a man, works in traditionally male jobs and even secretly visits a prostitute named Lillie. While Rachel struggles with the implications of her uncommon behavior especially as viewed by the Church, she knows deep within that this is her true self.
Mattie Crockett is the opposite of Rachel in everything. While she is "allowed" by her physically abusive husband, Adam, to work in a tailor's shop, she must not go anywhere else without him. She is captive in her own house and subject to Adam's fists when he is not "pleased" with her. Mattie's only hope is when Adam frequently goes out of town to Houston on business. It was one of those times when she decides to take a walk on the beach behind her house. And that is where she meets Rachel for the first time. Both are lonely and in need of a friend, and because of this, they form an unlikely friendship that is pursued whenever Adam is away on business.
Crist has written a historically strong novel. She has taken much care in presenting an accurate portrayal of the mannerisms, language and dress of the period and location. Her descriptions of the physical settings are genuine, and the tropical cyclone and the weather leading up to it is so chilling that it made this reader tense. I felt like I was right there. The depictions of how men view their wives and women in general, are meticulously precise. While Adam's behavior is excessive even for 1900, he knows he can get away with the abuse because wives are property, and Crist explains this exceptionally well.
Rachel's character succeeds in this time period because she acts like a man and therefore is treated like one for the most part. And this is where Mattie's and Rachel's romance rings the truest. It survives because of the traditional male-female roles the two exhibit with each other, but it flourishes because of the tenderness and uniquely feminine qualities that Rachel bestows on Mattie, especially with their lovemaking. Crist showcases this lovemaking with subtle references and actions to keep it authentic to the period. In Galveston 1900: Swept Away the reader is constantly reminded that it is 1900. Both women struggle with their relationship and how the Church and God may view it. Their choices are not easily accepted by them or others. The story also deals with the reality of Mattie leaving her husband, and Crist resolves this the only way she can for that time period.
Crist evenly paces the story throughout, and while Adam's brutality is difficult to read at times, it fits right in. As I have written in other reviews, I delight in historical fiction especially a novel like Galveston 1900 that is well written and sincere. Linda Crist has a bona fide hit with this outstanding story.

Sweet and Funny -- Very Good Read.......2006-01-10
This book was well-written, sweet, funny, and heartwarming. The characters came alive with great dialouge. The conversations flowed and weren't canned -- they was witty and believable -- showing the innocence of a 4-year-old little boy, the teen angst of a 14-going-on-30 teenage girl, and the basic power of attraction that is generated by a man with high values of honestly and integrity... even when that man has six kids, which would quite logically scare any woman away. In some books that have opposites attract... you never quite get the attraction. Here you feel that Sam and Carly are ultimately meant to be.

Swept Away....
Bestselling, award-winning author Marsha Canham's breathtaking new novel transports readers to Regency England as a young woman rescues a mysterious man, only to find love, danger, destiny....
"They have to know the truth. Before it is too late." Those were the half-naked stranger's only words as he opened his eyes, looked into her soul, then lost consciousness in the shallow tidal pool. Annaleah Fairchilde, heiress and noblewoman, soon learned the identity of the man she saved: Emory Althorpe, adventurer, accused traitor, and Napoleon's spy. Even as she bound the dangerous scoundrel's wounds, she fell deeper under the spell of a man handsome as the devil, sent to her by fate.
He remembered nothing. Only the need to escape. Emory Althorpe was wanted for treason, yet his only hope was a shadowy memory hovering just beyond his grasp, and beautiful Anna, who aroused unexpected passions. He had no choice but to abduct her, needing her to gain access to London's ballrooms, where he could prove his innocence. Together they raced into the face of danger, determined to find the key to his past and live--or die--together, as destiny decreed....

Excellent story! Romance and mystery that keep you at the edge of your seat........2007-09-03
Great stories like this one are so rare. Something more than sex and a frivolous plot... A tale that gets me completely enthralled. Canham has written some of my favorite books (Blood of Roses, Pride of Lions), and she has written some that were a big disappointment for me (In the Shadow of Midnight). "Swept Away" is definitely one of her best.
Annaleah is a young heiress whose parents want to wed her to a dour and cold man. When she refuses, her mother sends her away to stay with an aunt who never married. Annaleah's mother hopes it will teach her all of the reasons she should not want to remain unwed. Instead, Annaleah learns that freedom can be a treasure.
While walking along her Aunt Florence's beach property, Annaleah finds a man who is half- drowned. Florence sends servants to bring the man into her home. When she sees the man, she realizes he is Emory Althorpe; a boy who grew up nearby. There have been accusations against Emory of treason. Knowing he is a good man, Florence hides Emory until he is well enough to flee. During his stay, Annaleah begins to feel that her aunt is right in believing Emory to be innocent. The problem they face is the fact that Emory is suffering from amnesia... he can't remember what truly happened.
When he is ready to run, Emory decides to take Annaleah. He tells her that he needs her for only one day, to help create a diversion. However that one day changes their lives forever. They become bound to one another. Annaleah insists that she will stand by him until they find the proof of his innocence.
The mystery in this story is completely consuming. The romance, very endearing. Canham created the perfect combination. There was never a point where I became bored. In fact, I spent a lot of time holding my breath as I was reading. Battle and escape scenes come alive. Relationships between many characters are very gripping, without drawing time away from the main couple.
I got very little sleep last night. I just couldn't put this book down.
Just About Perfect.......2006-11-01
Fast paced action plot mixed with romance and intriguing characters. Can't ask for more than that in a book. Well done.
Excellent.......2005-01-21
Marsha Canham has been a favorite of mine for awhile. Swept Away is a wonderful book. It has a unique plot, it's written so that it is easy reading, and the dialogue between our hero and heroine is witty and fun. Emory, out hero was drop dead gorgeous and fortunately annaleigh really was his match. At one point Emory is injured and annaleigh wants to tend to the wound and of course he won't let her. So she says ""oh, do shut up and sit down before I pinch some sense into myself and let you bleed to death!" I laughed outloud. Basically SA has it all. I thought it bogged down a little in the 3rd quarter but it was short lived and didn't detract from the overall rating of the book.
GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!...........2003-05-19
GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!.GREAT!..GRE.E..AH..Give me another line and I'll keep repeating the same word until it convince you enough to prove my word by reading this book. What make this book that great??..Well...this book has everything- romance, mystery, adventure, action, suspense, humour, plus a lot of great characters. What do you want to know more???..Plot summary???...NO..You don't have to know ANYTHING about the plot. Just start reading it and see if you can put it down!! And you wonder why people gave this book ONLY 5 stars???, ..because that all they could give, of course.
... and by topping it with SWEPT AWAY put her on top of the list of my fevorite authors.
Totally captivating!.......2001-10-03
I love this book. After finishing it I have no wonder why other readers always give it 5 stars. The story was very well created. The book is full of thrilling intrigues and twists and turns. It's simply a very entertaining and perhaps the most sexiest read and I just couldn't put it down. The heroine, Annaleah Flairchilde, falls in love with the hero, Emory Althorpe, very quickly because he is so charming and beautiful. Emory is washed away unconscious on the shore and is found by Anna. He awakes with no memory and he is accused of being a traitor and treason. Anna is a strong-willed and brave woman once she believes he is innocent, she is determined to go with him to find out the truth before it is too late. There are enemies to fight with and secrets and plots lie in wait for they to resolve. As they go together, Emory also cares for Anna. He even risks his life to keep his promise to get rose oil for her. Beware of Lord Barrimore, he almost makes me believe that he is truly a hero. Swept Away is the very best book with unforgettable characters that will live in your hearts forever. You must not miss this one if you are a fan of Regency.

Swept Away.......2002-04-15
Julia Armiger has set her mind to bring revenge on Deverel Grey, Lord Stonehaven. He brought to light the embezellment of money by her brother Selby. Julia and Phoebe, her sister-n-law, don't believe Selby took the money and want to prove his innocence to clear the family name of the scandal that resulted. Julia has tried to get Lord Stonehaven before, but when all attempts fail she sets out with a new plan, a plan of seduction. She believes she can seduce the truth out of Lord Stonehaven. The truth being he embezzled the money, not Selby.
Swept Away was a thrilling book to read. The characters were well developed and well written. Lord Stonehaven is quite enchanting and Julia is a very independent thinker. When she sets her mind to something there is no stopping her. The chemistry between these two is like fire jumping up off the pages. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. There is romance, humor, mystery, and lots of passion. The characters of Phoebe and Geoffery really added to the story. And Dev's mother Lady Stonehaven was a very likable character. There are many twists and turns to this story.
I have never read a Candace Camp story that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. This book met all my expectations of a Candace Camp novel. I was able to read this book in practically one day. It was so easy to get into and to keep reading. A must read for any Candace Camp fan or anyone new to a Camp novel.
Great Book!.......2000-08-24
Okay, first things first...I have a major confession....this was the first historical romance i've ever read. Secondly, this is the first book I've ever read by this author. But everything considered, i had a wonderful time! I liked the story a lot, and plot, twists, and characterizations were remarkable. The story is about a young woman named Julia who is out for revenge...by seduction. Lord Stonehaven is the unlucky fellow who is the target, after blaming an embezzlement on Julia's brother, Selby. If that wasn't bad enough, Selby's suicide makes things worse, and Julia blames the whole death and break up of her family on Stonehaven. She makes good plans for revenge, and is even admirable in all her endeavors, but she forgot something...she didn't take her attraction for him into account. The book is humorous while intriguing, and I just couldn't put it down. The characters were amazing, and it was so good that I read the whole book in one stretch...it was THAT good. Just a small drawback...I didn't find it that far behind in time. Though it was supposed to have taken place in 1811, it somehow seemed modern, and I didn't have a sense of being displaced in time. But overall it was an extremely good read.
enjoyable.......2000-04-17
I have only read one other book by this author and I enjoyed this one a little more. I got it from a used book store and recommend doing the same.
book not on par with earlier work.......1999-06-23
Candace Camp should try to recreate the great writing she did in Rosewood and Heirloom - her recent books have not done her justice. I loaned Rosewood to people who would have never read a romance novel and they loved it. I hope she does another good book someday.
