5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-15

This book is informative on a number of different levels. It helps to identify key differences between the Thai culture and western culture, and gives you the information you need to speak with your significant other about on these differences. My fiancee and I wrote and talked for months before reading this book. I could not figure out why she did not have an opinion on many things I thought were important, and kept saying "up to you". The answer to why she said this so often alone was worth the price of the book, but it gave me many more answers, and an understanding of the Thai culture you only start to glimpse if you read the internet. My fiancee also read the book (in both Thai and English), and said it gave her a much better understanding of some of the things I did where she thought I was being rude or pushy. If you have a significant other who is Thai, BOTH of you should READ THIS BOOK! It will save you hours of frustration, and give you an understanding and a basis of discussion you may never arrive at otherwise. The Thai culture is WAY different than Western culture, and their culture deserves understanding at the very least, and respect for many of their customs. They have a way of dealing with people that I personally find refreshing.

On the down side, I thought the Western lifestyle was a bit too generalized, but it did give the basics for understanding so you could talk with your significant other about those differences. It also assumes that your significant other is in the Thai sex industry, which is not the case with me. It does not really discuss how Thai people deal with that industry, nor how a different background might mean different rules apply. However, again, it provides you an excellent foundation for understanding and discussion, which is about all a book can do.

If you are reading this, then I wish you luck on the journey you are about to undertake. With patience and understanding, you will be rewarded with a wonderful, smart, funny and warm companion who would give their life to you. The key is patience and understanding, and this book goes a long way towards starting that process. Read it! Highly recommended, from both the Thai and Western points of view.

I bought this for a friend of mine. He was having trouble understanding why his Thai girlfriend brought him to her mom's house. Why did she start asking him for money and then turning around and giving it to her mom?
Here, in this book, are the answers. This very well written book is uniquely written so that the left hand page is in English for the guy and the right hand page is in Thai for the girl.
This should be mandatory reading for any Thai-Farang couple.
Very well done.

4 out of 5 stars Culture Gap - Explains the differences........2007-03-10

Well written and organized.
Would recommend to anyone that wants to gain better understanding of Thai culture and how it may affect relationships with Thai women.

I can not comment on the imbedded Thai version, since unable to read.

5 out of 5 stars Get an insider's view.......2007-01-28

I read this book in 2 days. I recommend this book for any Western man who is dating or courting a Thai woman. I was ignorant to many Thai ways. This book is Heaven-sent as it is easy to read and understand and cleared up a lot of misunderstandings I had previously.

For example: Many guys told me that Thai women lie and to get used to it. I had a negative view of this. But the truth is that Thai culture is non-confrontational and that it saves face of everyone involved. In order to avoid anyone being embarrassed or degraded, Thai people may at times stretch the truth or speak something other than the blatant truth. This is not meant maliciously, but as a Westerner it may be hard to understand, especially if you are from a culture that prides itself from boldness, bluntness and outspokeness.

Because of my German heritage, I was taught to be blunt and not to beat around the bush. I was taught that this was a sign of respect towards others. I learned that in Thai culture this is a sign of DISREPSECT. It is often to save face and to avoid confrontation in Thailand.

Also the issue with the dowry bride price bothered me until I read this book. I felt uncomfortable with the idea of paying for a woman to marry her. But since reading this book, I realized that Thai culture expects men to pay a dowry as a symbol of love, respect, appreciation and gratitude to the wife's parents for raising and caring for her.

Not every family will require a dowry, so each situation is different.

It is also a sign of readiness to support the future wife. In the West we are taught that love is seperate from money, but in other cultures money may represent a symbol of love. This way of thinking is very different from what I was taught in the West, but it did help me to be more open minded to other ways of thinking. It helped me to understand the deep feelings of Thai culture and to realize that it is not necessarily "gold digging" or "greediness" for a woman to ask for money or material things.

I also understood why a woman may feel depressed, sad, or angry if her boyfriend or husband does not give her material things. On the western point of view it may be seen as "buying" love, but the #1 value of Thai people is generosity. They base their self worth on how generous they are. Therefore, it is hard for them to understand if someone does not want to show generosity.

(Of course balance and communication along with compromise is best in any relationship no matter what cultures are involved. Letting your girlfriend/wife and her family know what you can reasonably afford to help with is almost always going to avoid problems. Letting them know that your heart is true and genuine can often make life a lot easier.)

Although each Thai-Western relationship will differ, I will recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand his Thai girlfriend or wife and where she is coming from.

To my delight, the book is written in both Thai and English, so your
wife or girlfriend and her family can also read this to understand
you better.

Not every single thing in this book will apply to every single relationship, but it does give you something to work from if you are new to this all.

Book Description

Easy to read, easy to follow, and easy to understand, in this book the authors define and demystify the unique language of consensual sadomasochism, examine the psychological power of erotic dominance and submission, provide a carefully considered guide for safe SM play, and explain how SM can be an activity of intense intimacy and sophisticated erotic theater, as well as one of simple sexual pleasure. Combining their extensive professional credentials with deep personal experience, the result is an original introduction to a widely misunderstood realm of human sexuality.

"Henkin and Holiday have done erotic explorers a wonderful favor. Their useful book is concise and clearheaded in all things SM. But the most radical concept for many will surely be the notion to simply have fun." - Mark Thompson, editor of Leatherfolk

I've actually recomended this book more often than my own. That's because you're holding what is without doubt, one of the finest and most useful books on BDSM ever written. It can help you distinguish between looking and seeing. Not for skimmers........this one is soul food. - Guy Baldwin, M.S. author of TIES THAT BIND and SlaveCraft

Henkin and Holiday offer a very useful book about BDSM for mainly beginners in the scene but also for anyone who just like staying on top of opinions about BDSM. The book is well organized with a glossary right after a good discussion of special terms used in BDSM. Likewise sample negotiation forms are found at the end of the chapter where the procedure is explained. The largest section of the book concerns safety but not necessarily the kind you might find in "On the Safe Edge" or "Learning the Ropes". Here the focus is on learning about yourself first, learning about your partner second, and then how to explore BDSM. Throughout the idea that BDSM is primarily a pleasureable partnership is embraced and indeed in my personal experiences the best SM or Ds relationships are partnerships. Neither Henkin nor Holiday say that their way is the only way but they give solid reasons for their opinions and make suggestions based on years in the scene and as scholars and educators. This is definately a book I have proud to have in my library and one I recommend to people new to BDSM. - TammyJo Eckhart from kinkybooks.com

If you are exploring the lifestyle, this book is a good general overview of what to expect. But, as with any "how to" book, real life experiences vary. This book is very explicit and informative. It is tastefully written to inform the reader, not tantilize. The book accomplishes its objective.

3 out of 5 stars Consensual Sadomasochism.......2007-09-17

The book was very well written. For those that are new to the lifestyle it is a good starting book, as it explaines what to learn as to what you and your partner like. For those in the lifestayle sometimes it is a good thing to review and learn something new from a book that has been revised.
The book express important facts ,CPR,First Aid.

A very interesting read. This book will allow you to enter what some see as the mirky world of sado-masochism safely. Communication is key - especially in China.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done!!.......2001-12-19

Written by two long time members of the SM community, Consensual Sadomasochism offers a great "intro" to consensual power exchange play. The authors display a considerable breadth of knowledge and a wonderfully tolerant and open attitude toward all forms of BDSM play. The book is easy to read and follow and covers SM "basics," including fundamental concepts like safe words, limits, negotiation, and consent. The book contains good, if somewhat limited, descriptions of basic SM play (bondage, spanking, clamps, etc). There is also a good section on finding partners and how to find the SM community, along with a bibliography.

The authors did a wonderful job putting this book together.

Dear Mel,

Okay, it's not a dream job. The kid is alright, but her mom treats me like a personal slave/shopper/chef. And she's vile to the pet iguana who is now my only friend -- sad or what? Maybe I'll run off to San Francisco -- maybe my next postcard will be from there! Wish me luck!

xoxo,
Rowan

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Enjoyable.......2006-05-06

Rowan is a British teenager from England. She's like any ordinary girl, just making her way through life and enjoying the experiences along the way. On the other hand, one experience is not so pleasant. Living with her brother is a drag. He annoys Rowan all the time and is a little pest. Rowan can't be in England anymore with her family and just has to get away. She decides to become a nanny and go to America. She has never been to America and she hasn't been a real nanny before. Rowan finds a job in Seattle for a family with a little girl. Nothing is going right with this family and the only friend she really has at this point is a pet iguana, who is being trapped upstairs in a cage of this Seattle family's apartment. Rowan decides she can't take it anymore and she has to protect the iguana because the family wants to get rid of it. Her next adventure is to San Francisco, California. She meets a boy, Landon, after her first bus ride and he takes her with him to Truckee, California. Rowan is starting to really like Landon, even though he is kind of a jerk. Will her time at Truckee be the greatest thing that has ever happened to her? Will she finally meet her true love?

I really enjoyed this book. It had a lot of meaning to it that was completely real. This girl is trying to truly find herself and where she belongs. Where will she be in life? That is what really makes this book complete. This is an enjoyable and fun book to read. I recommend it to anybody who loves some romance and humor all mixed together. Kate Cann is an extraordinary author with a way of bringing books to life.

5 out of 5 stars Will She Stay or Will She Go?.......2006-02-10

Rowan wants to get away from her parents and her brother who is good at everything. She decides to quit college and become a nanny. Rowan gets a nanny job in the United States for a family with one little girl, Flossy. At first she thinks this is going to go really well, and she is going ot become really good friends with Sha, the mother. Rowan can't take all of the fighting, she thinks Flossy should be able to do what she wants and not go to dance class, have a nature diary. Now that Flossy's parents are fighting all of the time and she has to do so much more than just take care of Flossy she is thinking about quiting. When Flossy's grandmother comes to visit she talks to her a lot about leaving and her grandmother tells her to go for it, but she doesn't want to leave Flossy. Will she go find another job or will she stay for Flossy?
Some things I liked about California Holiday is all of the drama after Rowan goes to California and all of the suspence of what was going ot happen next. I would recommend this book to people who also like the other holiday books from Kat Cann.

California Holiday
By: Kate Cann
Review by: Dana

In the book California Holiday by Kate Cann , Rowan like any other sister gets frustrated with her younger brother. He already has a career and future plans, unlike Rowan. This angers her. One day Rowan becomes so upset with her brother she hurts him, and unlike all of the other injuries she has caused him, this one requires medical attention. Rowan's family soon comes to believe she has become a psycho. Rowan decides it's time to slightly break away from her home in England. She receives a job as a nanny in America. At first Rowan is upset with her new job. This may be because of the "nut job" mother, the father who hit on her, and sadly, the pressured, stressed-out, little girl she cares for. Soon enough Rowan befriends two normal beings: Iggy, an abandoned iguana owned by her boss, and Grandma. Unfortunately Iggy is going to be given away and Grandma will be returning to her home shortly. Therefore Rowan hops on a bus with Iggy to a new, unexplored destination. On the bus Rowan meets a guy who she develops a crush on. He tells her about his destination, which is a resort located in the woods that he works at. This young man helps her and gets her a job and a place to stay at the resort. Rowan is very happy with her decision of joining the gentleman. The daycare center is where Rowan works; she is not a huge fan of her career but loves the resort and the guy. One day an attractive woman appears, and Rowan discovers it's the guy she met on the buses ex girlfriend. Rowan's man leaves her for his ex. Yet her ex's new relationship is on the rocks and Iggy is becoming restless. Rowan is concerned that he needs a permanent home. She is also concerned about her love life3. Now if you want to find out who gets the guy, and if Iggy will find a permanent home, READ THE BOOK!!
My opinion of this novel is that it is just good. Nothing special, nothing climactic, it was not up to my personal standards. I also viewed the book as extremely predictable and revealing. The story was interesting enough to continue reading, but not complex enough to be put on a "Best Books" list. Also, the characters didn't' have very complicated personalities. I would recommend this book, but only to people who are looking for a very easy, leisurely read.

1 out of 5 stars BOO!! This was really disapointing........2005-11-12

Calafornia holloday is not at all what i expected. It looked good but i was mistaking. The Main Character Roanne meets this guy and he is a drug adict. She falls in love with him. I mean come on, you know someone has serious problems so you go out of your way to spend as much time with him as possible? It makes no sence. It is a mindless half hearted novel that could have been way better if Cann didnt ruin it with a really stupid main charater, drugs, the characters constantly trying to get into other characters pants!!! It has a crummy ending too! This is really a book i would not recomend. This is not a good book at all. It is mediocre to the last degree.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVED IT!!.......2005-09-09

This book is about a 20 year old girl named Rowan who wants to get away from her stressful life in England. So she decides that she wants to work as a nanny in Seattle, Washington. Well that doesn't work out so she runs away with this hot guy to Truckee, CA. This book has a lot of emotional ups and downs with Rowan trying to find love over the summer. I would recommend this only to age 13 and up.

Mistletoe means kissing, and four favorite authors each create a story about love and relationships during the holiday season in this anthology.

New Year's Eve equals a time for new beginnings, and Maxine can't wait for her high school BFF's famous Christmas party. However, being at home during her college break and pining away for the perfect but pricey party dress in the window leaves her feeling a little depressed. Her old crush just might have all the answers she's looking for, including a job, so all her New Year's Eve dreams just might come true. There is, of course, just one little catch--she's working as an elf in a Winter Wonderland, but she's Jewish. (WORKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND by Aimee Friedman)

A broken up foursome reunites in Hailey Abbott's tale, HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE BREAKUP, with Emily's return home from college. But things aren't really what they seem to be. Her boyfriend, with the help of her best friend, buys her a last minute gift; she doesn't know what to talk to her best friend about; and no one seems to remember that she has a whole new life...or do they?

One Hollywood superstar's New Year's turns out very different than the one he's expecting. Instead of skiing, a JLo cancellation changes his departure plans. Instead of flying, he drives towards his destination, breaking down about halfway there in a ghost town. From that point on, something shifts. He falls hard for a girl and takes a deep look at himself and sees that the world may be more than just his plaything. (SCENES FROM A CINEMATIC NEW YEAR'S by Nina Malkin)

Finally, Melissa de la Cruz spins a modern twist on an old Christmas tale from the heart in THE CHRISTMAS CHOOS. Kelsey's determination to find her boyfriend a perfect gift for the holidays leads her down a path she'd never thought she'd take. On top of present stress, she's invited to her friend's Sweet Sixteen party in the gated community in town. Will she wear the same boring dress she's worn three times in a year again and have the snobs humiliate her, or will she finally wear her inheritance?

Four unique tales from favorite authors will help readers feel the iciness of winter, yet also leave them full of warmth. Hailey Abbott, Aimee Friedman, Nina Malkin, and Melissa de la Cruz bring festival treats filled with relationships and their concerns during the holiday season.

5 out of 5 stars Flannel pajamas and hot cocoa are a necessity while reading these toe-tingling tales of holiday romance.......2006-10-19

WORKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND (Aimee Friedman) - Maxine "Max" Silver, is your typical New York City gal, who loves shopping during the holiday season, trying on dresses that she'll never be able to afford, and scarfing down hot chocolate and cookies in Rockefeller Center. The strange part is that she doesn't celebrate Christmas, and feels that there is a serious lack of Hanukkah songs available to all of those dreidel-spinning masses. However, her thoughts regarding holiday music instantly go out the window when this college freshman runs into her high school crush, the scrumptious Heath Barton, whose father happens to own Barton's Department Store. Before Max knows what's happening, she's working in the Christmas Corner at Barton's, dressed as a holiday elf, singing Christmas Carols with a Nutcracker Prince, Sugar Plum Fairy, and Santa Claus, while making goo-goo eyes at Heath. But on Christmas Eve, this New York City fashionista finds true love with someone she least expected. 5/5 stars.

HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE BREAKUP (Hailey Abbott) - Aria, Emily, Marcus, and Jason have been best friends for years. Double dating at the dingy diner known as Matthew's, and sharing heaping plates of greasy chili-cheese fries for as long as they can remember. But when Emily leaves for college, waving goodbye to Aria, Marcus, and Jason, who are all seniors, the foursome splits up. That is, until Christmas rolls around, and Aria believes that everything will go back to normal. But Emily returns home with a new personality. Gone is the funny Emily who left, and in her place is a more mature, composed Emily, who has no time for football games, and high school drama. She also has no time for her boyfriend, Marcus, who seems to be getting a little too cozy with Aria lately, leaving the two wondering, on New Year's Eve, who, exactly, they'll be kissing when the clock strikes twelve. 5/5 stars.

SCENES FROM A CINEMATIC NEW YEAR'S (Nina Malkin) - Connor Moline doesn't have stars in his eyes, but just about every girl who looks in his direction does. For he plays Danny Stiles on TV's "Pinot's Point," and he's hanging out in the middle of a Hollywood mall, as faux snow falls from the ceilings. But all he can think about is the great time he'll be having when he and his buddies get to Lake Tahoe, where they'll be ringing in the New Year with some really gorgeous girls in a couple of hot tubs. 4/5 stars.

THE CHRISTMAS CHOOS (Melissa de la Cruz) - Kelsey Cooper is considered one of the beautiful people at Parker High School, but it's not because she has fancy clothes, or an expensive car. And it's certainly not because she lives in the rich part of town - because she doesn't. No, the only reason why she's accepted into Gigi McClusky's uber-trendy group is because Kelsey is the prettiest girl in school, and no group of Beautiful People can be complete without the prettiest girl in school. But when Kelsey begins searching for the perfect gift for her longtime boyfriend, and best friend, Brenden Molloy, she realizes that the forty-five dollars burning a hole in her pocket is certainly not enough to purchase something that will show him how much he truly means to her. Brenden feels the same way. So the happy couple do something drastic to afford gifts for one another. Gifts that will bring a smile to the others face, while forcing them to make the ultimate sacrifice. 5/5 stars.

I have been waiting for the release of MISTLETOE for months, and was ecstatic when it finally arrived earlier this week. Each story brought a sense of holiday warmth into my heart, even though it's only October, and there are still Halloween decorations dotting people's front doors. Hailey Abbott's HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE BREAKUP presented amazing character development, and fabulous dialogue that truly made you interested in what would happen next in the story; while Melissa de la Cruz's THE CHRISTMAS CHOO's managed to mix a bit of MTV's MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEEN and THE GIFT OF THE MAGI together to create a beautiful, heartwarming holiday story that contained two lovable characters, whose chemistry between one another was impeccable. Nina Malkin's SCENES FROM A CINEMATIC NEW YEAR'S confused me a bit, as the various scenes seemed to zap the characters from location to location without a moment's notice, and the content seemed a little less holiday-ish than some of the other tales, but it was still enjoyable. However, it was Aimee Friedman's WORKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND that I enjoyed the absolute most. Max was your typical New Yorker with a sarcastic personality, hip lingo, and a flair for the dramatics. The fact that she had the job of working as a department store elf - something I've wanted to do for years - was hilarious, and the romantic interludes shared between her and her surprising love interest were absolutely adorable, sending warmth through the reader's entire body. Flannel pajamas and hot cocoa are a necessity while reading these toe-tingling tales of holiday romance.

Book Description

This book is the complete reference for anyone who wants to learn about a hidden phenomenon that affects hundreds of thousands of traveling women and foreign men: Instant vacation love affairs that banish loneliness, provide cultural insights, offer one-on-one, hand-to-hand foreign aid to the world's poor, create international children and sometimes even change the course of history. Romance on the Road is bound to become a landmark title revealing how the rules that once bound women to choose only "socially appropriate" mates have begun to crumble, as female executives and heiresses gallivant with penniless but charming beach boys around the world, from Kenya to Jamaica to Thailand. Author Jeannette Belliveau examines all facets of romance on the road, with chapters on every world region known to attract female sex travelers (from Southern Europe to the Caribbean, Africa, India, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Oceania), an extensive look at the reasons for love journeys, stunning new material on women who traveled for love in centuries past, and roundups on typical experiences, portrayals in film and literature, ethics, etiquette and health, and predictions for the future.

4 out of 5 stars Masterful Scholarship of a Taboo and Detrimental Practice.......2006-10-05

Creating what she calls a geography of sex and love, a newspaperwoman from blue collar Maryland - a self proclaimed sex pilgrim -- examines a social phenomenon that may have involved more than 600,000 Western women in the past 25 years: travelers who engage in flings or long term affairs with foreign men, vaulting over cultural boundaries. While intercultural love and marriages are a subtheme, the book's focus is hedonistic sex with virile strangers.

Does the mix of scholarship and memoir provide a compass for the heartbroken (or hot-and-bothered) globetrotter looking for a distant cure? Prurient interest will soon be dampened by the charts, graphs, survey results, and MLA-style citations of more than 800 bibliographic sources from Henry James' Daisy Miller to a British newspaper feature entitled "My Toyboy Tours". There's a global chronology of the trend, a summary of related books and movies, and basic ethics and etiquette ("remember the man is real, not an actor in your fantasy"; and "do not use him as a sperm donor"). It's probably of more use to social scientists than the general reader.

Belliveau has done an admirable job of combining veteran intelligence on each locality with a profile of an adventurous Western woman and a timeline of foreign female exploits in the region but it's unfortunate that her concentration on ecstasy abroad overwhelms her scholarship on ethical and economic questions as well as cultural and social ramifications in sex-host cultures. One forgettable fling has the power to affect systems far larger than the person, family, village or region which witnessed and absorbed the behavior.

Without apology Belliveau admits a detrimental byproduct of her Shirley Valentine amusement (or was it healing?): "At first I was appalled at the smothering level of harassment I encountered in Athens. Then I succumbed to these temptations, with the likelihood that my sex partners became further convinced about the ease of seducing any lone Western female tourists to later cross their paths."

The resulting heightened environment of sexual predation should come as a nasty shock to thousands of traveling women hoping to explore the world unmolested.

5 out of 5 stars Travelers, listen up.......2006-08-16

Author Jeannette Belliveau is right on the button in her finely researched -- and steamy -- exploration of why women travel to find sexual satisfaction in the arms of strangers from cultures other than their own.

While Belliveau's scholarship is rigorous and quite sufficient alone to compile this first-of-its kind treatise on the topic, she nevertheless includes her own personal experiences as a veteran "sex pilgrim" on three different continents to provide her readers with first-hand revelations of intimate, anonymous sex.

Women traveling specifically in search of casual sex is by no means a new phenomenon. Belliveau points out that female adventurers began enjoying foreign love affairs in 1840s Rome and that today an estimated 24,000 women annually hit the road and seek men for carnal pleasures.

Interestingly, for a topic -- sex -- that commands attention so easily, most folks remain ignorant of the lifestyle encountered in Belliveau's book. It's publication is nicely timed, however, with the release of the movie, "Heading South," director Laurent Cantet's surprise summer indie hit featuring Charlotte Rampling, which details the lives of three lonely women cavorting with foreign men and engaging in uninhibited sex.

The spector of AIDS and other sexually transmitted illnesses, always hovering in these scenarios, and the need for stringent measures to protect against such infections, is acknowledged by Belliveau, but the subject is not touched upon in the movie, set in 1970s Haiti, where AIDS would surface by the end of the decade.

Romance on the Road explores a little-understood phenomenon -- love journeys by lonely, bored or adventurous women -- providing a wealth of new material on the history and social catalysts for these affairs. The book's tone reflects sympathy for women scarred by dating wars and mating stalemates in their home countries who are brave enough to seek affection and companionship on distant shores.

--Joan Peterson, Ginkgo Press, publisher of the EAT SMART series of culinary travel guidebooks

5 out of 5 stars A personal study of sexual experimental behavior by western women while traveling.......2006-08-12

"Romance on the Road: Traveling Women Who Love Foreign Men" is a personal study of sexual experimental behavior by western women while traveling. A sort of a sexual odyssey with charts, maps, footnotes, and handy geographical timelines that encapsulate women's sexual behavior historically. It is a combination feminist sociology report and love diary. Actual sexual adventures and adventuresses are interviewed extensively. Many theories about women's and men's sexual behavior and preferences are presented and explored, sometimes catalogued by region or area. Author, journalist and world traveler Jeannette Belliveau recounts: "Wild, shocking, yet tender and hopeful love journeys by women tell a story of a worldwide Attention Defection Disorder, a revolution in mating behavior, and a poignant search for traditional romance (from Travel)." Areas and countries in which sexual encounters are analyzed include Italy, Spain, Greece, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Brazil, Africa, India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, and the Far East. In addition to accounts of sexual encounters, the author includes history, reasons, sexual ethics, etiquette, and thoughts for the future. "Romance on the Road" is far from a clinical, cold book, despite its objectivity. Indeed, Jeannette Belliveau met and fell in love with her husband, Lamont Harvey, on her own sexual odyssey. In a way, "Romance on the Road" is the author's personal tribute to brave sexual adventuresses and to the traveler's possibility for romance and fulfillment.

4 out of 5 stars Wedding Destinations is just that.......2007-03-23

I own a info website and thought that this book would be useful for assisting in the reviews and generating ideas. It did just that, although some of the desinations seemed to mundane.

2 out of 5 stars Marginally Useful Resource for Getaway Weddings.......2006-10-22

While the information provided for each venue in this book is useful and detailed in its own right, the actual venues chosen are quite suspect in many cases. It seems pretty clear there is an arrangement with some of them to be included in the book, rather than being places that were discovered through research by the author. IOW, many great places are left out because they weren't part of the "marketing plan". Also, while it's admirable to include as many states as possible, the plain fact is many states simply lack any real destination "pull".

Example: South Carolina is a state with literally dozens of beautiful seaside resorts, huge gardens and old historic places where one might want to have a ceremony. There is ONE listing for South Carolina... the same number of places listed for Minnesota (Mall of America???). The fact that Mall of America made it into a listing of America's 100 best "destinations" for a wedding, tells you something about how carefully the places in this book were considered. Similarly one listing for Alaska seems incredibly short-sighted, considering all the cruises and beautiful National Parks there. Meantime there are more than 12 locations listed for New Mexico. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are some beautiful locations in NM, but that is a disproportionate number of listings for a place most people will not have on their "short list of states".

Another problem with the book is that it has about a dozen pictures total, all in the front of the book, so there are many many locations you don't even get a sense for. How is the average couple supposed to say "Yes, that's the place we want to look into!" if you can't even see a picture of it? Bottom line: many great locations are overlooked in favor of those the author presumably has some connection with, and that helps no one...

...I do not recommend this book other than to borrow from someone (just in case the place for you happens to be here).

4 out of 5 stars Where's the WOW! Factor?.......2006-03-18

This is a nice little book. It contains and describes a number of places I would never have thought of. The references are very helpful. However, it covers only 100 places (as advertised) and few of them have the WOW! factor I expected from a book with his title.

I recommend the book. It's a can't hurt, might help item that is not very expensive. It's worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Good.... could be better........2006-01-23

I enjoyed reading Tabb and Silverstein's Beyond Vegas quite a bit. While some chapters ended up relatively untouched for personal reasons (Wyoming ski lodge elopement, too cold: New Mexico kiva ruins shindig, too weird), all the ideas were creative and well thought out. I can only think of one chapter that seemed like something anyone could have thought of (Ch. 1, wedding in a castle in Scotland).

Beyond that, the writers/partners were quite ingenous and thrifty, finding wonderful wedding sites at the drop of an incredibly inexpensive hat. In Santorini, Greece, the couple married on the balcony of their rented villa, overlooking the black volcanic cliffs and ocean-covered caldera of the Cyclades. Cliche? I think not. In Figi, the whole crew geared up in traditional skirts for a native wedding complete with National Geographic-quality melee.

A word to the wise, though-- these vacations were a lot cheaper in 2002, just after 9/11, when Tabb and Silverstein eloped those dozen times. The preface says that the couple never spent more than $5,000 on their most expensive elopement. Elopements are rated in the book on a dollar scale from "$" to "$$$$", and Satorini was given a "$$". When my beau and I looked into what that would cost in 2006 dollars (going to all the same hotels and booking the cheapest flight), we were shocked to find that the price of the same vacation would be no less than $5,000. While that's still a fraction of the cost of a white wedding, it's no "$$" on a 5K max scale. Take that into consideration as you read along.

5 out of 5 stars The best eloping book out there.......2003-07-11

If you are considering eloping, I highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of Beyond Vegas. It is the best book that is out there on the subject. Though it may be more popular if the title reflected better what it was about.

I bought both this book and Let's Elope when planning our escape from a typical wedding. Let's Elope can get you excited about the idea of eloping, but does not really provide much good information on how you would actually go about planning an event in any of the countries in which you might be interested. Beyond Vegas actually gives you the details you need to plan your wedding (elopment) in 25 countries, and we actually used this information to plan our wedding in Scotland. The authors actually got married in all of the destinations discussed in their book, and give all the pointers you need, not just what can be found on the official country registrar web sites.

3 out of 5 stars Good but you can do better..........2002-10-10

...researching on your own. I bought this book because I'm a travel agent, want to evetually get marrried away, and am always interested in what others suggest to clients.

Honestly, I found the book an "ok" source of info. Sadly, I ended up wondering where the couple involved in the book would get married next and what they would wear.

I am not opposed to destination wedding guidebooks, but this one could be a bit more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars We got married in Scotland because of this book!.......2002-01-15

My fiance and I dreamt about having a small wedding in Europe with a few close friends and family, but we didn't know where, and we had no idea what would be involved. After reading this book, we fell in love with the idea of getting married in Scotland. The book got us on the right track for researching it and made us realize that getting married there would definitely be possible and feasible.

This book gives a great overview of the logistics of getting married in various countries...it even rates the countries in terms of the difficulty of getting married there if you are a U.S. citizen. It is a great starting point if you are thinking of getting married in another country.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book -- Change the Title.......2001-05-08

This book is about eloping --- not gambling. Hey wait a minute, maybe it is gambling!

Seriously . . . a fun read to stir up great fantasies.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2005-07-12

This book was pretty good. It was a true story about someone finding out what they wany from life. It was about Shelly, who is invited to Grece after she turns down an invitaion from her controlling bf. She is having the time of her life w/o him until he showes up unannounced. The story had a nice plot yet I felt myself wanting to know more about Sarah and how she changes from being shy and timid to being outgoing and fun. It was a repition of the same thing: parties, parties, parties. Sarah seemed more deep and interesting yet u don't hear much about her. But, I still enjoyed the love triangle between Shelly, Nick, and Mike. I didn't really like Jade all that much. I thought she gaped in the limelight too much. She had to be the star or she had no fun. It was an attention grabber and well worth the read just not a perfect novel.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it!!.......2005-03-07

This book is boring!!!!!!!! The plot is bad and it isn't interesting. All it is about is these three girls who go to greece and basically do stuff and this author gives too many boring details!! it isn't engrossing!! I just read it because it was the only book my friend would let me borrow becuse it was so bad when I spent the night at her house. I would recomend it to girls from britain because the story takes place in europe and the girls are from england and they say british words and it is hard for me to understand it since I'm from Arizona! I am soo happy to be done with that book. It was so annoying and boring to read!! If you think this book is good than you have never read a good book. Try the A-list series

3 out of 5 stars Grecian Holiday.......2005-01-21

Reading this book, parts of it reminded me of my friends and me just hanging out. As i went on i could definatly relate to somethings, I liked how she decided to vacation with her friends rather then her mean boyfriend. The descriptions in the book made you see everything going on. This Book wasnt as good as i thought it would be, but it is better then a lot of other books i have read. I recommend this to people who would like to read teen Drama, partying, adn other stuff.

2 out of 5 stars This book was horrible.......2004-11-15

This is what my parents would call a "junkie teen book". It has no substance to it, and the whole theme of the book is sex. There is no substance, and no climax. All that happens is she goes to Greece with her friends instead of a trip with her jerk of a boyfriend, then they break up, then he comes to Greece and they get back together again. How can people think that is interesting? The only reason I gave this book 2 stars is because I thought the description of the house and the country sounded like it would be a neat place to go. I totally wasted my money buying this book, and I'm sure the Spanish Holiday book is just as bad.

4 out of 5 stars Grecian Holiday.......2004-11-12

Many people say that this book is a "beach read", and that somehow makes it bad. Well, I disagree with that. This story is about a girl Kelly. Kelly turns down going to a camping/hiking trip with her bossy boyfriend Mike. Mike gets really mad at her, and even more so when she goes on vacation with her sort of friend Jade and Jade's friend Sarah to Greece. In Greece, they just have different things happen, if I explain it'll ruin the story. The language in this book is easy to understand and it hardly ever has any "British-isms". At the beginning, the story sort of drags, but later on, it gets better and you can't stop reading. Jade is sort of an antagonist at times, and so is Mike, but they have Good Moments too. The end was also sort of not how I wanted it, but I still liked Kelly's "speech". I would recommend this book to anyone who would want to read something that isn't unbelievably depressing.

    Book Description

When Colgate-Palmolive and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) decided to inaugurate a new golf tournament in 1972 under the name of TV star Dinah Shore, who expected all those lesbians to show up? Golf? Who said anything about golf? Within a decade, the tournament week became crowded with comedy concerts, pool parties and tea dances. Promoters reserve entire hotels for the huge flock of lesbians that migrate into town each year, and the dance parties are so large an airplane hangar is required for the 5,000 sunbaked gals. The Dinah Shore tournament is merely an excuse for the year's biggest pool party. This lavishly illustrated, oversize book celebrates all things Dinah, including:

A history of the tournament highlighting the main players-with gaydar ratings for each.
Interviews with club promoters, bartenders, and -partygoers on the evolution of the "Gay Dinah."
An exploration of responses to the phenomenon by the LPGA brass, the golfers, the Mission Hills Country Club, and the city of Palm Springs.
"Dinah Style"-a look at the changing couture, including how to get your polo shirt collar to stand up.
"The Dinah Guide," including how to get to Palm Springs and its vicinity, how to secure lodging and tickets, directions for getting around, and a tourist guide to the area.

    3 out of 5 stars only so-so.......2006-08-14

Laura Harvey and two of her friends, Yaz and Ruth, plan on spending part of their Gap year travelling to Spain. But then Ruth's boyfriend comes along, and the trip starts going downhill. All he wants to do is stop at junky, touristy, restaurants where "the prices are in English," and cheap, dirty motels so he can "spend some time" with Ruth. And since he's driving, he gets the casting vote. But then a Bella, who Laura and Yaz meet in a hotel restaurant, offer to let them stay in their villa to take care of it while they go to the States. They take them up on it, and their trip changes for the better, especially when they meet Juan, the caretaker's son. He's a total dish, and Yaz and Laura both fall for him. But will Juan pick one of them? And if he does, will it change the girls' friendship? This book is flat, but funny, and you can easily finish it in one sitting. I was expecting more zing from the cover, but I've read worse.

4 out of 5 stars Who will he pick?.......2006-04-24

I read Spanish Holiday. The book was about three girls that went on a trip. Ruth is one of the girls, and she took her boyfriend Tom with her. Yaz and Laura didn't like him. The four people travel and travel till Laura meets a couple, and they ask Laura and Yaz to stay at there home and watch over their house. They all go there. Yaz and Laura loves it. Tom, Ruth's boyfriend didn't like it there so, they left. Yaz and Laura meet this guy named Juan and they both like him. You will have to read to find out who Juan likes!

I liked this book a lot. Some of my favorite parts were toward the end. I also liked it when they all moved into the house. The part I didn't like was when Tom was always yelling at Laura and Yaz.

I would recommend this book to girls. This book is a mixture of things like romance, drama and excitement.

5 out of 5 stars A good book to start your Summer reading.......2006-04-21

A couple years ago, I read "Spanish Holiday" to start my Summer reading and it is truly a really good book to do so. The book starts at the beginning of the summer when a group of friends go to Spain. This book is a really fast read, I remember I read it in less than a day. The book is in a first person narrative of Laura, the main character. You'll find yourself rooting for your Laura and all that Laura finds herself getting into. The ending really satisfying too. There aren't many books that I would reread over again but "Spanish Holiday" is definitely one that I can read over and over. So if you're looking for a good beach read for the upcoming summer season, "Spanish Holiday" should definitely be in your beach bag.

3 out of 5 stars English Cinderella meets Spanish Hunkalicious Perfect Man.......2005-06-15

The target audience for this novel is the high-school girl crowd. Laura and friends, one with boyfriend in tow, spend their "gap" year in Spain. There's all kinds of drama, torrid romance, betrayal, etc. It brought me back to my adolescence. Falling in love! Sex on the beach! However, the main male character in the book, Juan, is very unbelievable. He sounds soooooooooo understanding and balanced, and says things like: "but i know you need to think about it. I'll get you another drink". What was he, 50 and a counselor? I never met a Spanish adolescent with such an empathic head on his shoulders, and i've met a few.

This fluffy novel is perfect when you're semi-comatose and can't handle heavy writing but still want to have a book to move your eyes through.

It has a Spanish lexicon on the back. The spelling of Spanish words was quite good. No mistakes! My only objection is that in Spain you don't go into a café and ask for a capuccino. That's Italy. Other than that, no complaints for geographical or social veracity. My main objection remains Juan's maturity.
