Interesting and helpful.......2007-10-10
I found this book very interesting and helpful regarding some health problems I was having. Makes sense to me. Highly recommend it.
A must have for total Health.......2007-09-01
This book along with my Doctor saved my life! My total cholesterol was 293 and it is now at 152. My triglyceride level went from 625 down to 230 and is still improving. The quiz section in this book is right on. It fit myself and my sister to a "T". If you are serious about feeling younger and improving your all around health this is the book.Check out the "Younger You" book also.
Made a huge difference in my health.......2007-05-22
I found this book easy to read even though I didn't choose to slog through it all. The diagnostic questionnaires are understandable and simple to use.
Like "A Reader," I thought Braverman was recommending a lot of pills and I've been trying to REDUCE my supplements. But I felt ill enough (and monied enough) to try his regimen. Within a week I felt more cheerful, alert, resilient, and relaxed--a remarkable combination of effects. I've been sleeping well and waking up refreshed. My knees and hips don't ache. It's pretty amazing.
I wish I'd had access to this information when I was struggling with clinical depression several years ago. It might have helped me avoid taking some or all of the pharmaceuticals that kept me afloat.
While this approach may not be everyone's cup of tea, the book is certainly worth reading. If you've read far enough to get to this/my review, I'd suggest that you read it: The Universe may be trying to tell you something...

Thirty years after Frances Lappe's Diet for a Small Planet changed eating habits around the world, she and her daughter Anna bring us a new round of iconoclastic recommendations that break overwhelming issues down to a simple matter of personal choice. Hope's Edge presents many of the same issues of the original title, but it also provides a wealth of new discoveries and possibilities in this era of genetically engineered foods, worldwide famine, and growing rates of obesity-related health issues.
Beyond discussing a wide range of reasons to become a vegetarian (and that means no fish or chicken either, folks), the authors introduce you to a number of individual reasons for hope--Bob, the Wisconsin cheese maker; Jean-Yves, the farmer from Brittany who created the Sustainable Agriculture Network; and Muhammad Yunas, who has changed the lives of countless living in poverty with his remarkable microcredit programs. Along with these stories and the theories they're based on, you'll also find luscious recipes calling for grains, fruits, vegetables, and a handful of dairy products that will delight your taste buds and your conscience.
The Lappes firmly believe that the choices of low-level consumers have the potential to make positive changes, both in the world economy and in our physical health. By eating a vegetarian diet, shopping with care, and cooking with love, we might all brighten our future tremendously. --Jill Lightner

2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner featured in the book.......2006-10-13
This is a very interesting book. It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.
Hope Gained From Insight and Diligence.......2006-08-16
Thirty years after the publication of the highly acclaimed "Diet For A Small Planet", Frances and her daughter Anna Lappe have come out with a potent sequel and a beautiful statement of hope for a more equitable world through the world-wide spread of organic and sustainable agriculture techniques and locally controlled "fair" market modalities now challenging the status quo of chemical fed, toxic pesticide/GMO laden crops, and the lopsided "free" market capitalist WTO agenda that has been reaping havoc on the environment and small farmers everywhere.
The Lappes traveled to 5 continents while researching this book and their travels are both fascinating and uplifting as they report on people all over the world demonstrating that going organic and controlling their own markets are reaping major benefits in healthy, abundant food production while cleaning up the environment.
The Lappes do not reject world trade or capitalism, rather, they demonstrate how unregulated "free" markets monopolized by huge international corporations have been inadvertently causing food scarcity, bankrupting and polluting people all over the world, yet with an injection of regulation in the form ethics, strict fair trade measures, etc., they believe capitalism can "evolve" to a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy method of food distribution- a similar optimistic view shared by Lovins and Hawken in their book, "Natural Capitalism".
The inefficiencies of nutrient and food distribution is brought home in quantifying the huge amount of crops, water, and land required to feed cattle. The amount of energy necessary to produce an ounce of meat could feed hundreds of people on a much healthier vegetarian diet, hence, the myth of food scarcity and the need to grow more food to feed the world.
Every chapter finishes with a recipe and there are many more at the end of the book along with several pages of resources and contact information on a host of organizations advocating social responsibility.
Be gentle on the earth.......2006-02-22
Good copy. Excellent vegetarian recipes. Explains why we need to eat lower on the food chain. If we do, we can feed the world's hungry people.
Goes into my life's top 5.......2004-11-21
I won't say much here, because the other reviewers have described the book well. All I will say is that this is one of the very best books I have ever read. Not only does Lappe have an incredible way with words, but she summarizes her profound insights in such a way that really organizes one's thoughts for genuine reflection. Add to that a well-documented and researched approach, as well as fascinating stories of different communities around the world which they themselves visited.
Honest Hope.......2004-05-25
Hope's Edge is a Must Read for Everyone! The book puts it all together in an easy-to-understand, personal and honest fashion: the connection between consumerism, 'brainwashing', oppression, global economy, poverty, exploitation etc. etc. The concepts presented in this book are sophisticated and have depth. I liked the personal tone of the book, the story telling. The book is very honest, the stories told utterly inspiring. Frances and Anna never 'whitewash' the porlbmes the projects they are describing are facing. This truth-telling makes the stories even more impressive, more credible. The very existence of these projects defy the global systems as we know them. The way they do 'business' defies the global system of exploitation and competition. This book makes us take an honest look at ourselves, our values, the daily choices we make, what we consume, how we live. This is not just 'about food' or poverty or world hunger, this is truly food for thought and inspiration of how to create a better world."

EXCELLENT !.......2007-06-29
If you are about to build a home...or just enjoy seeing the details that make other structures a "home" then you will love this book...
Very informative...beautifully executed...homerun all the way...
OK, but not what I was looking for........2007-02-13
I was excited to get this book in the mail, as I thought it would have some real good ideas on how to build a larger home on the water that had some character. I found most of the homes rather odd, homes for people that would name their children Jupiter or Flower. I am back today ordering more books. Also most homes either are RIGHT on the water or set back in rock. Didn't find much in the way of regular 100ft setback from the water, woods, maybe a walkout basement type of MN lakes home. There was one from WI but again, it was right on the water, which you normally can not build now days.
Visually Delicious.......2006-12-28
This book is wonderful at capturing the rare beauty of various architectural wonders through vivid photographs and welcoming text. You never get bored flipping through this book and it is incredibly inspiring. It combines several differently designed homes that will appeal to a variety of readers. Reading this book is like daydremaing on paper. Highly recommended.
Architect.......2006-03-11
I found this book both educational and handsome in content and in photography. As an architect practicing in different regions of the country, I'm always thankful for having opportunities to do design work in Maine. Maine, as a place to live, is simply wonderful and unique, but the sense of peace in these "Houses on the Water" is elevated creating a noble inspiration for the reader.
A House on the Water- inspiration for dreaming and designing.......2004-01-19
As a landscape designer, I was consistenly impressed with how these wonderful houses fit into their site, lifting out the critical views and respecting the nature of the place. Having enjoyed the houses that Robert Knight designs, I was pleased to learn why his houses and those selected for his book are so satisfying to see and experience. O'Rourke's photographs are spectacular and with the plans, really help to visualize the structure and the setting and how they fit together. Design professionals and homeowners alike with whom I've shared this book rave about it. A perfect gift for friends and family!

PILATES FOR THE SPORTS ENTHUSIAST.......2007-04-10
I enjoy exercising and doing many sports such as tennis and golf. This book shows what Pilates exercises to do if you are interested in different sports. I love this book and am so happy I bought it.
Excellent guide for athletes.......2006-08-16
I was pleased to finally find this book a few years ago, as I was looking for a way to help with my fencing. As a book geared towards athletes, it assumes that you don't simply want to "look and feel fit", but build a real core that helps you become a stronger athlete, no matter what your sport.
I appreciated that the illustrations of the exercises (which are very well done) featured both authors, drving home the idea that Pilates is a fitness regimen for BOTH men and women who want to be stronger. Too many times books about exercise systems focus on one gender, which can turn people off... I often felt that Pilates suffered from being marketed too strongly towards women when it is a very universal exercise system.
I also very much liked that the core exercises (there are many) were ones that did not require any extra equipment, relying on your own body weight and range of motion to accomplish the movement. The sample exercise programs at the rear of the book emphasize this. Other sections of the book that include weights, bars, etc. are considered as supplemental to the core system and can be added as needed. Personally, this helped me to stay with the exercises, because I didn't need to have anything with me to do them.
An excellent book. I highly recommend it.
Excellent Starter Book.......2004-05-07
This book is great for anyone who is interested in Pilates. If you do other sports, like biking, running or golf, it gives you appropriate excercises to compliment your activities. It provides outstanding descriptions and pictures of the exercises.
Highly recommend this book...even if you just want a Pilates book with pictures.....
A great read for fitness enthusiasts!.......2004-03-24
As a cyclist and runner, I never before thought that I could benefit from Pilates. This book definitely changed that, and I recommend it to both serious athletes and anyone looking to improve their endurance and well-being. The stretches are great, and the pictures are easy to follow.
Photos make it easy to follow.......2004-03-15
A lot of exercise books are difficult to use for an actual workout. This book solves that problem with detailed descriptions for each move and later a purely visual guide that shows thumbnails of each pose. I'm not an "athelete", but I like to workout and wanted to start pilates to help with those aches and pains I get from the gym. This book is going to make it easy to get a pilates workout in a few times a week.
This book is incredibly well written, clear and concise. It gives great tips for those who do engage in the major sports featured (tennis, golf, skiing, running, etc.). Highly recommended!
Book Description
"In this, the first major scholarly study of the Straight Edge phenomenon, Ross Haenfler puts forth a richly compelling and very personal narrative, expertly applying his sociological training as he moves effortlessly between insider and outsider perspectives." Michael Kimmel, professor of sociology, SUNY at Stony Brook, and author of Manhood in America: A Cultural History
"Haenfler's well-grounded study of straight edgers uncovers the complexities and contradictions of a fascinating lifestyle movement and renders them understandable to all." Rob Benford, Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Straight edge is a clean living youth movement that emerged from the punk rock subculture in the early 1980s. Its basic tenets promote a drug-free, tobacco-free, and sexually responsible lifestyle tenets that, on the surface, seem counter to those typical of teenage rebellion. For many straight-edge kids, however, being clean and sober was (and still is) the ultimate expression of resistance - resistance to the consumerist and self-indulgent ethos that defines mainstream U.S. culture.
In this first in-depth sociological analysis of the movement, Ross Haenfler follows the lives of dozens of straight-edge youths, showing how for these young men and women, and thousands of others worldwide, the adoption of the straight-edge doctrine as a way to better themselves evolved into a broader mission to improve the world in which they live. Although the original definition of straight edge focused only on the rejection of mind-altering substances and promiscuous sex, modern interpretations include a vegetarian (or vegan) diet and an increasing involvement in environmental and political issues.
The narrative moves seamlessly between the author's personal experiences and theoretical concerns, including how members of subcultures define 'resistance', the role of collective identity in social movements, how young men experience multiple masculinities in their quest to redefine manhood, and how young women establish their roles in subcultures. More than a unique window into one youth movement, this book provides fresh perspectives on the meaning of resistance and identity in any subculture.

Straight Edge.......2007-07-27
Being 20 and never have tasted anything alocholic, smoked, used drugs, etc. I can say I'm taking the lifelong commimtment called straight edge. Curious by what this book holds, I bought it. If you are straight edge you might find some new ideals in this book. If you aren't this is a great jump off book. There are some interesting things I learned from reading this book, like how other scenes are in different states. Also just learning about how someone else became straight edge is interesting. Overall the book takes a sociology approach to defining straight edge and does a great job. I'll admit though the only bad part about this book is finding out some of the interviewees "sell out".
A great look at the Straight Edge scene!.......2007-04-05
Ross really did a wonderful job with this book. He analyzed the Straight Edge subculture from both a sociological point of view, as well as from a fan perspective. Ross has been part of the Straight Edge scene since the late 80's, and has witnessed a lot during this time. This gave him the ability to truly analyze the scene. The book reads great, and I recommend it to anyone that is interested in learning more about this subculture.
A truly intelligent ethnography.......2006-11-02
I just finished reading this and I want to convey how impressed I am with this author. Not only does he talk about straight edge from a personal/biographical viewpoint, he incorporates direct quotes from other individuals in the scene, especially the Denver sXe scene, into his very well organized book. Moreover, he doesn't just leave his findings un-analyzed. Haenfler looks at the inherent contradictions in straight edge in light of gender roles, militant vs. positive straight edgers, and more. He really looks at straight edge in relation to what other ethographers and sociologists have said about subcultures and other non-mainstream movements, including punk, teeny-boppers, and skin heads, to name a few of the comparisons. As I said in the title of this review, this is truly an intelligent and complete ethnography; Haenfler looks at straight edge from so many social and cultural angles, really getting to the core of the movement, while still exploring the implications of the widespread variation amongst straight edgers. I'm really hoping to be able to use this book for a writing seminar I'm in at the moment...how cool would that be?
On a more personal note, this book solidified my pledge to being straight edge and really made me feel proud of that decision. Haenfler mostly discusses straight edgers in the hardcore music scenes in Denver, NY, and Boston, but I've never been a member of any real straight edge "scene." It's got to be easier for straight edge kids who have a support group to keep them on track, but I've never really had that. Reading this book made me realize that I've come to the same sort of progressive conclusions about life, society, and politics that other scene-straight edgers have, but all on my own. So in that sense, this book really connected me to the global straight edge movement.
Haenfler also provides a good historical analysis of straight edge as well by discussing in relative detail the music that was and is so essential to the scene. He gives a well-balanced and well-intermingled look at straight edge hardcore music as well as the other social implications of straight edge. He clearly knows a lot about the music too.
Thanks to Ross Haenfler for writing this book. Seriously, it is so frickin good. And it made me feel so good about the world. Sweet deal.

Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Book.......2005-05-14
I love this book. Both challenging and supporting me, it cuts through the stammering of my mind. I return to it again and again.
When I first heard of Gangaji, an American born teacher and author, I was a seasoned performance artist and psychotherapist. I was not interested in gurus, teachers, and "enlightenment", quite the opposite. So I came to her initially with skepticism and a bit of cynicism. I actually resisted for a decade. Only when I began to seriously confront my own mortality did the desire to know the truth of who I am became urgent. It was then, while channel surfing late at night, she appeared in what seemed the most unlikely place, local access TV. This time, through some wonderful mystery, I was willing to listen and experience for myself
Freedom and Resolve: The Living Edge of Surrender is a rich, deceptively small volume. Gangaji has an extraordinary gift for speaking in a way that resonates with the hearts and minds of westerners living in this particular age. She writes in clear, contemporary, conversational prose, conveying the radical invitation of her teacher, Papaji (H.W.L. Poonja) and his teacher, Ramana Maharshi to "Stop". To choose to wake up from the trance of who we think we are and experience the choiceless truth of who we really are. The invitation is to self-inquiry, the willingness to ask the questions: Who am I? What is here? To directly experience what follows these and similar questions. The resolve is to not go back into the trance by turning away from that essential experience, but to freshly inquire anew as thoughts or feelings of separation arise. We are encouraged not to judge them, rather to use them as pointers toward experiencing fully the emotions they lead to, divorced from the circumstances and thoughts which gave rise to them.
The invitation is to experience what keeps us from realizing our true nature, going deeper in uncovering the most primal emotions such as terror, despair or rage, unconsciously functioning below the surface. The ones which are actually running the trance. Gangaji invites us to face the terrors we've spent eons running from and meet them fully, neither denying them or indulging them, and discover what else is always here regardless of emotions, circumstances, and feelings which by their nature come and go.
This may sound like I am describing a technique, yet there is no technique, no particular doing. There is Freedom. There is Willingness. The rest? Gangaji speaks of her teacher often saying, "Wait and see." At first this seemed an oddly passive statement to me, but I have come to experience it as alive, a profound resting in the silence of my own heart.
Gangaji's invitation is radical in part because it is not based upon a particular philosophy or religion. There are no prescribed practices or rituals, unless one considers inquiry a practice, nor the prohibition of them. Most radically, it calls into question the very structure of who we've believed ourselves to be. Who you are is not separate from God or Love or Truth or Freedom or Peace or Silence, whatever one chooses to call it. Therefore, there is nothing you have to do to "get there". No merit to be earned. Who you are is already here, has always been and will always be. The invitation in this book is to wake up to Yourself.
The temptation arises to quote lavishly from Freedom and Resolve. Instead I will only give a flavor of its contents: The Story of Me.. Survival, Sex and Personal Power. The Most Ruthless Act of a Lifetime. The Weather Theory of Emotions. The Skillful Use of Emotions. You Are Already Whole. Effortless Realization. It's Time to Tell The Truth. How Will Your Life Be Used?
Freedom and Resolve is short, only 72 pages, yet covers so much ground in its short, concise chapters. I find it beautiful as well as practical. If anything said here tugs at you, or speaks to you in any way, I encourage you to read this exquisite book and investigate Gangaji's invitation for yourself.
A gem of wisdom.......2002-03-15
.
Gangaji is a modern, Western teacher of spiritual awakening. This little book is both inspiring and practical, and helps to reveal to us our ways of holding on to the beliefs, fears and even spiritual traps that keep us from discovering the simple truth within us.

Book Description
Travel back to the year 1926 and into the rush of experiences that made people feel they were living on the edge of time. Touch a world where speed seemed the very essence of life. It is a year for which we have no expectations. It was not 1066 or 1588 or 1945, yet it was the year A. A. Milne published Winnie-the-Pooh and Alfred Hitchcock released his first successful film, The Lodger. A set of modern masters was at work--Jorge Luis Borges, Babe Ruth, Leni Riefenstahl, Ernest Hemingway, Josephine Baker, Greta Garbo, Franz Kafka, Gertrude Stein, Martin Heidegger--while factory workers, secretaries, engineers, architects, and Argentine cattle-ranchers were performing their daily tasks.
Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht opens up the space-time continuum by exploring the realities of the day such as bars, boxing, movie palaces, elevators, automobiles, airplanes, hair gel, bullfighting, film stardom, dance crazes, and the surprise reappearance of King Tut after a three-thousand-year absence. From the vantage points of Berlin, Buenos Aires, and New York, Gumbrecht ranges widely through the worlds of Spain, Italy, France, and Latin America. The reader is allowed multiple itineraries, following various routes from one topic to another and ultimately becoming immersed in the activities, entertainments, and thought patterns of the citizens of 1926.
We learn what it is to be an "ugly American" in Paris by experiencing the first mass influx of American tourists into Europe. We visit assembly lines which turned men into machines. We relive a celebrated boxing match and see how Jack Dempsey was beaten yet walked away with the hearts of the fans. We hear the voice of Adolf Hitler condemning tight pants on young men. Gumbrecht conveys these fragments of history as a living network of new sensibilities, evoking in us the excitement of another era.

This beautifully illustrated book takes the reader behind the high walls of the history-rich architecture of Marrakech's exotic houses showing richly decorated interiors, colors, fabric s and lighting from a city which draws on both African and Middle Eastern cultures.

ARMCHAIR TRAVELERS WILL LOVE THIS !.......2006-02-23
Marrakech, that magically mysterious place in Southern Morocco - just the sound of the name gives birth to visions of intrigue, romance, secrets. It is, perhaps, the city many of us dream of visiting. Well, if Marrakech is not included in your vacation plans this year you can enjoy an in-depth colorful tour through the pages of this beautiful volume.
Readers will find a telling description of the glories of this city: "With the coming of twilight Marrakech gives itself up to all manner of seduction, the senses discover the thrill of happiness. On the horizon it seems that all the purple in the world, in its infinite shades, has chosen the Atlas chain as its domicile...."
Thanks to the spectacular photography by Florentine artist Massimo Listri we know this to be true. His camera takes us behind the high walls and enormous cedar doors of Moroccan houses to discover magnificently decorated interiors, with a melange of colors, fabrics and lighting all reflecting the blend of cultures found in the city - Berber, French, Spanish and Arab.
One finds traditional homes called Dar as well as the magnificent palaces with interior gardens known as Riad. Some 27 residences are featured as well as twelve outside of the city. Each is unique, delightful with shaded yards, fountains and pools enhancing the lives of those who dwell on the edge of the desert. Where else would we find a pool with mother-of-pearl lining the bottom or a home in which artists have used "what might be called chiffon painting," which involves "processing the layers of plaster with a thin fabric, the only way to obtain certain faded blues and linen grays...."
Daniel Rey, author of numerous travel accounts for Conde Nast Traveller and the Louis Vuitton City Guides, divides his time between Rome and Marrakesh. His narrative is a splendid companion to Listri's photographs as he details behind the scenes life in this contemporary Eden.
If you have not already dreamed of Marrakech you surely will after browsing through this lush volume, which is surely one of the most enticing books to be found.

A roadmap for the literary bohemian.......2007-07-26
The Reading Material chapter alone makes this book a must have for the serious literary bohemian. I'm working my way through the Erotica Must-Haves section right now, wearing a kimono of course. The Cinema and Sound chapters are dead on.Bohemian Manifesto: A Field Guide to Living on the Edge
Fools!!! .......2007-07-09
This is a fun read for those who lack philosophy and understanding of European culture. To suggest conservative values are somehow tied in with corporate profit taking is beyond stupidity. Often it is the lesse faire entrepreneur that thumbs his nose at community values. The entrepreneur is often the bourgeois aristocrat with the capital enough to succeed in his endeavors. Those who hold to the lifestyle described in this book should understand that they are bought and sold by pop culture that claims to "disrupt society norms". Your puppets and you should not claim to be original or rebellious--try lazy and subjective!
Fun book....don't take too seriously.......2007-01-26
I really liked this book. It's a fun read. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I think the Bombshell Manual of Style is better. However, it is a fun book, and one should read it with a sense of humor, and not take themselves, or the book, too seriously.
An interesting book........2006-07-04
A tongue in cheek look at the various "types" of bohemian you are. Written seriously, but lumps you as a person of interest and not a part of the bo movement.
Amusing Cliches.......2006-04-03
Amusing. Cliche. That's it. I found the unfounded association of bohemianism with the dust "residue from John Wayne Gacy's clown white" to be very distasteful and very disturbing.

Customer Reviews:
amazing book.......2007-07-15
You cannot beat this book for a teen or twenty something who needs advice for getting on the right track. While James Dobson is a traditional religious writer I feel that this book is down to earth enough to appeal to the intended age group. It is not judgemental. It just explains the benefits of making good choices. It also gives the information necessary to make good choices. It is so harsh that it would turn off a person who may not be as religious as the usualy Dobson reader. Excellent reading and excellent advice. Could also be useful for older readers as well.
Must Have.......2006-12-21
I read this book twelve years ago as a teenager and have bought it for others since; it is a must-have for all teenagers and young adults. It is very easy to digest and devour even for the reluctant teenage reader.
Perhaps too practical.......2006-01-05
I am a 19 year old seeking guidance on how to become a successful and trusting Christian. I certainly did enjoy reading Dr. Dobson's valuable insight, but I felt that "Life on the Edge" was rather short on bible verses and teachings to back it all up. For example, whenever Dr. Dobson describes something as a sin, such as living with a partner before marriage, he ought to prove it by use of the Bible. Nevertheless, the psychological teachings and advice makes the book worth a read. :)
Bigotry.......2004-09-17
This book has lots of good advice for those navigating the college years. However, this book is homophobic, and therefore, I must give it a poor rating. Preaching hate is not what I want to find in a Christian book. The book offers bad advice on how to treat homosexuals, and has no advice for homosexuals reading the book.
Why is it important to follow God's will.......2002-01-22
Dr. James Dobson opens the reader's eyes in this short, but potent work. I read this book in just one afternoon; in this time my view about my future and my own personal goals and aspirations was altered significantly.
Learning how to fit God into my future is one of the most difficult problems that I, as a Christian, struggle with. Reading this book helped me to realize how important it is that God not fit into my agenda, but rather, my agenda should fit around God's.
Please understand that this book will not give you an easy pathway to God's will for your life. It will, however, give to you the reason why it is so important that your life be focused around God. As Christians, we know that God's will is best for our future. However, as humans it is in our nature to do what we want and feel is best for our own life. Dobson's goal in this book is help the reader realize that in the long run of life, it is not our own meek achievements that will matter; in fact they will soon be forgotten. He succeeds in illustrating that searching for and following God's will is the only way that any person can hope to have a life of satisfaction and significance.
