Another good resource for marriages..........2007-09-01
This book, along with using scripture, can help couples identify and address marital problems and remedy them so that their marriages can be blessed and happy. As each spouse is overflowing with the love of God, then their marriage will be happy and blessed. The church and society at large will benefit as happily married christian couples bring God's kingdom into this world.
Just as God's grace is multifaceted, I believe that solutions in life will be as well. There are many good marriage books. I just read an unflattering book review by the couple that wrote this book (which is how I got here), and I am concerned on a variety of levels. The following statements are from the bible and should be lived out. Christians are to submit to God first and then to one another. Christians are to love other christians and non-christians. Husbands are are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Wives are told to submit/obey their husbands. The weight of emphasis is what Joel has an issue with. He expresses frustration with the emphasis that if wives would only submit, husbands would love. I agree with him. But God's order and design for marriage should not be dismissed. I need to love my enemies, regardless if they deserve it. Husbands and wives have responsibilities in marriage whether the spouses deserve it or not.
It is astounding to me that Joel would publicly denounce another book on the same subject matter in a book review on Amazon. He never finished reading the book he criticized. He claims that the bible teaching of women having to submit to their husbands is based on one LONELY scripture and is actually the reason that the church's teaching on marriage has been 'upside down' for 45 years. He purports that his book teaches something inspired by God and corrects the generally accepted church marriage paradigm. On this topic, Joel claims to be prophetic.
He also claimed in his review that his greatest need as a man "is for me to learn what it means to lay my life down for my wife and love her as Christ loves the church," not to be respected by his wife. These are not analogous. Actually, one is his responsibility/obligation (dying for his wife and loving her), the other is a reference to a desired response from his wife (respect). The author of "Love and Respect" (the critically reviewed book) makes that distinction. Husbands and wives are responsible to behave as the Bible teaches, regardless of the number of scriptures that support a behavior (for instance - being a living sacrifice). Respect is something I appreciate from others, especially my wife.
Another strong statement in the review is "I do not want my wife to feel like she is supposed to "respect" me simply because I am her husband or because the bible tells her to respect me. Yes, every man would like to feel respect - but does a Christlike man want his wife to respect him just because he is a male whom she is married to? No. A real man wants to live a life that is worthy of respect and wants to be respected because of the life that he lives." He obviously was not worthy of her respect for many years in their marriage. In fact, his behavior while being a pastor was bad enough to disqualify him from ministry. We as christians should be living lives that please God which will engender the responses of respect and love in return. I would like to illustrate this from a wife's perspective, using Joel's quote, "I do not want my husband to feel like he is supposed to "love" me simply because I am his wife or because the bible tells him to love me. Yes, every woman would like to feel love - but does a Christlike woman want her husband to respect her just because she is a female whom he is married to? No. A real woman wants to live a life that is worthy of love and wants to be loved because of the life that she lives"? I would hope so. We should live what the bible says, even if others are not living the way they are supposed to be living. Proverbs 31 exhorts women to be virtuous. Men and women, regardless of being spouses, are called to be holy and loving.
Joel was a pastor when he was guilty of abusing his wife emotionally, physically, and spiritually. He eventually committed adultery. Interestingly, his parents were involved with pastoring as well, and his father had also committed adultery and left the family. It makes one wonder when a family of pastors can behave so badly. Joel, as the egregious offender, he needed to change, and not blame his wife. But what about when a wife commits adultery? Is it the husband's fault? As David proclaimed, I have sinned against the Lord. Good marriage counseling addresses spousal accountabilities, thoughts and behaviors that are inconsistent with them, and strategies to help change the marriage for the better. Rarely is a bad marriage one spouse's fault.
Before Joel's book was written in 2004, many wonderful helpful biblical marriage books were already written. And if he had read those books, he may have avoided or shortened the length of the abuse and adultery that he was guilty of. A book that balances a husband's responsibility in marriage and a wife's responsibility in marriage is called "The Way of Agape" by Nancy Missler, written in 1995. Her marriage was in shambles as well, but she fought to preserve her marriage just like Joel's wife fought to preserve theirs. Another book that was written from the perspective that a husband's behavior alone could turn a marriage around is called "Rekindled, How to Keep the Warmth in Marriage" by Pat Williams, also written in 1995. Both books take different approaches, but the end result was the same - a saved, vibrant, restored marriage.
Hopefully, in the spirit of Christian love and humility, Joel will refrain from writing additional poor book reviews on marital topics, while promoting his own books. The love he promotes in this book for his wife comes from the Holy Spirit. The same source should influence Joel to be less critical of other marriage books.
Great Book.......2007-07-19
As a Christian Counselor I use many books in my work including this one and "The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His! 2" (the second book by this same author. I also like the new book A Forever Love Story Surviving Trials in Marriage These books are useful in showing how a Christian marriage should be. They are great "instruction manuals" on doing marriage right that goes well with the Bible. I would certainly recommend all of these books to any couple wishing to better their marriage.

This book is very informative and helpful in the age old conflict between husbands and wives. Joel is to be commended for his eye opening stand on issues that have for too long kept women in mental outlooks of defeat, especially when it comes to a troubled marriage. Joel and Kathy have taken a position of determination to help people realize their responsibilties in contributing to the foundation of trusting love and wholesomeness between a couple. For me, this book has been invaluable for supporting and even encouraging regaining hope that was lost and a renewed self image. That, in itself, is healing. I appreciated the emphasis on men recognizing their God-given responsibilty to lay down their own interests in life, as the head of the home, for the good of their wives. I have always believed that good would come back to them in abundance, if they caught hold of that vision. Love and respect is the main theme throughout this book. What better platform can you speak from then what God has already declared to be His design in the first place.
Hats off to Joel and Kathy! And prayerfully, may this type of writing/ministry be a forerunner to many ministries and counselors who seek to help in the marriage arena. Here is "hole" in our society that needs to be addressed and fixed. I would recommend this book to anyone who is married or even thinking about getting married!! Full of common sense.

Joel and Kathy Davisson's "Livin' It and Lovin' It" is the only marriage book anyone needs to successfully navigate the blessing of marriage. It is completely based on scripture and debunks past mis-conceptions bought into by the body of Christ, namely the "submissive wife" teaching. If you want true freedom and anointed equality with respect and dignity for both partners then this is the book for you. Their first book, "The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His" is a great introduction and overview for this topic. Both will launch your marriage into the heights of joy and "soulmates" that God originally intended.

This book has changed my life. As a husband with a great deal of emotional pain and pride this book has taught me how to care for my wife's heart and heal her pain. Marriage is about teamwork's and mutual submission. A successful marriage is found through balance and communication. I am in a constant mode of refining myself to be the husband that God and my wife desires.
Through this book I have learned these principles and have applied them in our marriage to find lasting change and happiness.

I just want to say I have been reading alot of Ellora's Cave books (which includes many wonderful writers) and the Lunewulf series was great. I have really enjoyed it and would say it is a "must" read.Started with the first book and didn't stop until the last.

i made my friends read it just because it was so hilarious..........2006-12-09
although fairly ridiculous-- as if girls are going to go out SNAPPING POLAROIDS of attractive men they come across. (near the end, everything is just thrown together-- but the author admits to this, so it's pretty comical..)
MAIN CONCEPT= be available while still challenging, & learn to go to gatherings where there are sure to be tons & tons of single men (she lists every possible venue you could imagine, however... they mostly have to do with taking up different sports/attending sporting events-- wow, really?!)
[SIDE BAR.--- the author herself hasn't exactly found 'mr. right'. it's not a serious book at all, so don't expect that. it's like a modern-woman's guide on dating... point being basically 'don't let men affect you & just have fun'.]
my favorite part of the book is in the very beginning.
it's about the special 'spark' two ppl can have when they first meet... very interesting... she gets into some research done on it.

She suggests ideas and places I have yet to see anyone else mention, which I really liked. What I didn't like is she has a conversation with you throughout the book as if she was sitting across the coffee table cracking jokes while conversing on Mr. Right. I guess she thinks she's funny. Maybe she is, but just give me the facts & ideas please! I found all the extra banter boring and annoying. Otherwise, she has some great ideas and I would have given her 5 stars.

MRRN is commonsense packaged in a humourous style. Learn to like yourself, look after yourself, and stop worrying about what men think. Perhaps I'm wrong... but surely no-one out there actually believes this is hard core scientific research? I'll eat my psychology degree if that's true! I read this book in an afternoon so, if you want to have a few home truths knocked into your brain (and appreciate a good laugh), then invest a few hours in Ms Carroll.

What a dreadful waste of my hard-earned money. The worst dating book I've ever read. Instead buy Find a Husband After 35 Using What I Learned at Harvard Business School by Rachel Greenwald, Surrendered Single by Laura Doyle, and Master Dating by Felicia Rose Adler. Those are a MUCH better use of your money! Mazel tov!

The book is written in such a hysterical style that I couldn't wait to put it down. It has a certain tone you may encounter when watching commercials - fast paced yelling (like a banshee), in desperate attempt to hold your attention, yet a style that made reading a book a torment - as did her adjectives related to men. (OK, it must be me - I don't appreciate disparaging comments or putting people down, especially not those I'd consider worthwhile sharing my time with). Makes me wonder, how good about herself a person genuinely feels if she (or he) has to refer to others with derrogatory adjectives.
A good deal of this book is dedicated to promoting the author's online dating website. At times it seems that it was the author's main intent behind writing this book. Nothing wrong with promoting her website or suggesting online dating as yet another avenue of possibly finding the man of your choice, but as you begin reading her book and every few pages you encounter "join my online dating service" - you begin to feel as if you're reading commercial after commercial after commercial. One commercial break every few pages - just as if you were watching a TV (and one of the reasons, I don't watch TV).
The premise behind getting a man in 6 weeks is that it only takes 30 seconds for a man to decide whether he would be interested in a woman or not - therefore, ultimately it only takes you 30 seconds to give the man the impression that you are the one and he's yours - at least for another 30 seconds, few hours or one-night stand. As to whether he would be your dream man and whether you'd be together more than than sharing a spicy weekend or two is debatable.
It takes much more than 30 seconds for people to discover what they have in common, how valuable they are to each other, how compatible they are and whether they share their lives to any greater extent.
From that perspective, the book is truly shallow. What you will find in this book is how to get a man's attention and possibly create that initial "click" - how to act so that a man finds you desirable and perhaps becomes intrigued to get to know better - at least until he gets what he's after.
The author does list numerous places where you may go hunting for possible candidates. Yes, it is a common sense that if you desire to find a man, you go to places which are frequented mostly by men - such as sports events, in which case I hope you truly enjoy the particular sport and are not attending the event because you are truly desperate or afraid of being alone.
One of her "wise" suggestions is dressing sexy and walking into a man's washroom. Good luck to you!
There are many other places and if you are a woman who has a rich life with many interests, your best bet would be meeting someone who shares some of those interests you are passionate about. If you have a fulfilling life, then you won't be needy, so you won't have to play the games and pretend that you're not lonely and desperate for having a man. If you are desperate, no matter what you do on the outside, and how well you think you can fake it, sooner or later, that desperation will show.
If you are happy with your life, with or without a man, then you'll be able to focus on sharing the time together because both of you enjoy it and have something valuable to share with each other, so you'll want to be together again and again, after that initial click is long gone.
As the previous reviewer noted - there are many other books with much better suggestions and of much higher quality.

I only read short novels when I am between a good novel and a hard place. So I was not expecting too much from this one. I was wrong, this is a new series by Webb for Intrigue. It is hot and it was good.
Darby Shepherd has always felt a little out of place. She hears voices and sometimes sees visions. Now a serial killer has kidnapped one of the children she teaches. Darby has to let the police know and so she is revealed to the world as a psychic. She has always felt that she must hide her talent and now someone has found her. Adopted at 10 she has very little recollection of her previous childhood.
Aidan is an enforcer. He and Darby we raised togather for the first 10 years. She is his other half, his soul mate. Now they want him to find her and discover if she remembers the Center. If she does he is to eliminate her. Aidan finds his heart and his duty are in opposition. Suddenly there is another player and he will have to risk everything to save his love.
One of the creators of these two unique people, Galan, is truly evil and now he knows where Darby is and he knows Aidan will be sent to find her. Now is his chance to take back what he gave to the program.
There are many stories like this one out there, for some reason this is a better telling. I enjoyed it and will look for more of the Enforcer stories.

Funny pairing of liberated female and stuffy male.......2001-11-14
Christina Mayhew is a silent-screen actress in Hollywood of 1913. Though a very successful leading lady, for her, acting is simply a way to earn the large amount of money she needs to pay for medical school. Martin Tafft is the producer of her latest film and very much her match in intellect, ambition and personal strength.
Martin is extremely disappointed to learn that Christina is leaving the industry after this film wraps. He had very much hoped to work on future projects with the beautiful, young actress. She is one of the most talented--and most exciting--women he has ever known.
Christina is very attracted to Martin, and when she realizes that his admiration for her is more than simply professional, she determines to proceed as a liberated, independent woman and propose to him that he be her very first affair.
Gentlemanly Martin is shocked to his polished shoe tips at Christina's scandalous offer. He is adamantly opposed to sex outside marriage, tells Christina so, and remains stiffly withdrawn from her until an accident injuring the leading man forces Martin to take over his role. Soon Martin and Christina are sharing kisses on the set so heated, it becomes impossible for Martin to resist extending those kisses into his and Christina's private lives.
The setting of HER LEADING MAN is fascinating, and so authentically drawn, reading it delightfully transported me to the world of early Hollywood. The liberated heroine and the stiff, moralistic hero are a great pair of comic opposites, and the heroine's outrageous grandmother provides a lot of laughs, too. The love scenes between Martin and Christina are very emotional and very hot--I really love stories where a repressed hero finally lets go to the cauldron of passion inside him, because the heroine is utterly irresistible to him.

Film director Martin Tafft grows increasingly disillusioned with the industry. When he began in 1904, he believed that the brilliant creation of motion pictures would be the salvation of humanity, spanning the differences between people to allow them to see the commonalities. Instead, the industry deteriorates into a slough of immorality and decadence. He still has hopes that when "talkies" come into their own actors and actresses will be forced to spend their evenings learning their lines rather than wildly carousing the town.
Martin's newest leading lady Christina is made of a different ilk than most actresses seeking stardom. She sees acting as a means to an end. Rejected from scholarships because she's female, she intends to earn sufficient funds to pursue her dreams of a medical degree. To protect her reputation and run interference, she brings her Grandmother to the set as a chaperone. The elderly Mrs. Mayhew, Gran, provides marvelous comic relief with her high-spirited ways and obnoxious remarks. Christina calls her an Egalitarian because "she treated everyone like dirt." Although Christine prides herself on her independence, it helps to have someone with a reputation for hardhead ness and a nasty disposition on her side.
Martin's latest project is an Egyptian epic based on the bible. But when his loathsome lead breaks his arm trying to ride a camel, Martin finds himself stepping into the part. Despite the strong chemistry between Martin and Christina, he's not prepared for her out spoken ways when states that she wants to make love with him. Rather than flattered, he's outraged because he considers her perspective to be repetitious of the deterioration of the morals of the industry. He doesn't perceive her outspokenness to be a natural part of her independence and honesty. Now they must act together in the roles of lovers, and as the heat increases on screen, it likewise threatens a conflagration off screen. Especially when their passion takes control, but the moralistic Martin wants marriage and the determined Christina wants a medical career.
The entire Dream Maker miniseries has been a huge success, culminating in THE LEADING MAN. Indeed, the early years of the motion picture industry with its rapid changes has provided a fascinating background beautifully captured by author Alice Duncan's talented pen. Further, Duncan has a flair for creating both unconventional and unorthodox characters that really grab the imagination. Christina, like each of her predecessors, possesses strength of character and a gentle vulnerability that makes her markedly appealing. Martin, who's been a background character of each book, finally gets the story he so richly deserves. His concerns regarding the moral character of his industry span the decades, making him a surprisingly contemporary hero. Very highly recommended.
Dekightful romance.......2001-10-21
Though a very talented actress and in spite of thinking the film industry is a waste of energy, suffragette Christina Mayhew performs in the movies to finance her life's dream of going to medical school and becoming a doctor. To earn her tuition as she already has acceptance from a school, Christina performs in the latest movie produced by Martin Tafft for Peerless Studios on location.
Martin is an idealist, but is frustrated with all the negative publicity the young Hollywood industry seems to produce. Thus he finds the intelligent Christina with her accompanying escort, her grandmother, quite refreshing to say the least. Christina soon finds Martin not only her intellectual equal but surprisingly he encourages her to use her intelligence rather than pretend to be a vacuous pretty babe. They begin to fall in love, but Martin's codes of ethics involving people working for him seem like a roadblock to any permanent relationship between them.
Alice Duncan's entire "Dream Maker" series has been a delightful look at the first decade of the movie industry, but this novel is by far the best of a wonderful collection because this is Martin's story. Martin has been a key secondary player in the previous novels and readers (except perhaps this reviewer) have patiently awaited his venture into love. The story line is insightful, but also loaded with fun as Christina realizes that she must persuade HER LEADING MAN to reach for the stars with her.
