Book Description

More than 80 years ago, a young scholar emigrated from Eastern Europe to Jerusalem. Not long thereafter, he received a priceless spiritual teaching that revealed the source of lasting joy and fulfillment from a spiritual master whose name he would never disclose, not even after he himself became the most renowned Kabbalist of the 20th century. The young scholar's name was Rav Yehuda Ashlag, and though his letters and writings offer tantalizing hints of the wisdom that was given to him, the pieces of the puzzle have never been fully assembled until now. Here Michael Berg, himself the descendant of great Kabbalists, shares the result of years spent studying Rav Ashlag's life and work. In this book, Berg shows how the secret offers life-changing power. Drawing on stories and insights from Ashlag and other noted mystics, Berg explains how to discover one’s true purpose in the world and thereby find lasting peace and joy.

4 out of 5 stars "The Search" by Michael Berg........2007-10-04

The book is very good. I purchased it in hardback for my wife. I believe the purchase price was $12.95. However the Shipping was nearly $18.00. This book is approximately 4"X6" and weighs maybe a couple of ounces. Unbelievable! What a RIP-OFF! I sent an e-mail to Amazon to complain, but as of today (10/03/07) I have not received a response, nor do I expect one. Needless to say this is my last purchase from Amazon. I employ over 400 workers for my company, and I made certain that they were ALL aware of this unethical business practice.

1 out of 5 stars Sharing? .......2007-08-11

Share this!, Mr. Berg. I read it in an hour, glanced back through to see if I missed something so perhaps spent an hour and fifteen or twenty minutes on drivel, ancients and wisdom, my eye. There's more philosophy in anything by Carlos Castenada on peyote. There's a saying that everytime you open a book you learn something, this is an exception to that, although I did learn for the thousandth time, Buyer Beware.

2 out of 5 stars The Secret is So So.......2007-07-13

After all the hype on this book I was disappointed in it's content. It left me feeling uninspired and the author is a bit intense and condescending. The parables were a stretch.

1 out of 5 stars Religous Subset of "The Secret".......2007-07-09

This book is focused on the religous suset of the ideas put forth in the book "The Secret" made so popular by Oprah. It is written by one of the co-authors of the latter book.

I don't think I would buy another one of these books on Kaballah, but I found this book to be interesting.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A solid read for those embarking on the spiritual path.......2007-10-10

This book is a solid read for any person embarking on the path of self-discovery. It summarizes a group of spiritual laws that Chopra identifies as being key aspects in one's ability to fulfill their dreams. It essentially provides a foundation for further study as opposed to being a comprehensive self-help/development manual. One caution for anyone who is new to this "path," is that some of the content might be a bit farther out on the metaphysical curve than you've experienced previously, and particularly so if you're coming from a rather traditional religious perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Feel Good.......2007-10-09

This a great, easy read. This is the type of book you can read over and over and you get something different from it every time. It's a great read for relieving stress and becoming inspired. I think everyone should read this book at least once.

2 out of 5 stars An Idea That Did Not Need to Happen.......2007-10-05

When I purchased this book, I thought it was simply a new edition of the original book of the same title. After all, why would it be necessary to "ABRIDGE" a 111-page book? Anyway, I ordered 12 copies of it as I was using it for a class. Only too late did I discover it was a shortened version of the original masterpiece (and Amazon would not exchange it for what I wanted). I suppose the book was reissued in this format as part of a new marketing effort associated with the DVD movie of the same name.
Whatever the reason, there is no need to buy this instead of the original title --which is a jewel for anyone's library!

3 out of 5 stars Original thoughts on "Science, Religion & Spirituality".......2007-10-02

Chopra is a master story teller and doctor by profession. He presents traditional eastern religious views in most of his writings. He hardly presents anything original. If you really like to seek the truth from religious and scientific point of view, I will recommend: "Science, Religion & Spirituality" which is now available on Amazon. Enjoy!

Book Description

Bikram, the "hot yoga" program, has been heating up the yoga world lately, and its founder probably has something to do with it: The outspoken, dramatic, and always controversial Bikram Choudhury has garnered a lot of attention with his version of hatha yoga that some yogis think unorthodox: In his classes, students are stuck in a room heated to at least 105 degrees doing a structured program of 26 asanas with a sergeant–like instructor––and they love it. Bikram Yoga will emulate that same energy.

With his take–no–prisoners philosophy, Bikram describes how the program can reap great medical, physical, and spiritual benefits––the poses work out every part of the body, all of which can help alleviate many common ailments, from asthma to back pain. (Photographs will accompany each pose.) In addition, the book offers the best ways to incorporate eastern philosophy into a western lifestyle and tips on how yoga can cultivate "a union between body and spirit." Simply put, you don't have to meditate passively to reap the benefits of yoga.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide for At Home Practice.......2007-09-15

I have attended Bikram Yoga classes, but the studio is far from my house. This book allows me to practice at home, using the book as a guide. The author provides a description for each pose and what areas of the body each pose may benefit the most. Although the sequence of poses is meant to be practiced in order, if you have a specific problem, you can look up which pose(s) may help. Bikram Chourdhury also provides some information and explanations related to yoga. This book contains some yoga theory but the book's primary use is for applied practice.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2007-09-14

Choudhury's book on the practice of Bikram yoga is life-altering. I currently practice Bikram yoga, which is why I decided to pick up this book. I am so glad I did because it enhanced my practice and my thinking about myself, and life. I recommend this book highly. It's an easy read, fun and most of all, incredibly informative.

4 out of 5 stars No surprises, more info on Bikram philosophy.......2007-08-30

This product is designed to enhance your Bikram yoga practice. If you are not a practicing yogi, then much of the book will be mysterious theory only. This book has helped me understand what yoga practice is supposed to do for my body. My postures are deeper and more in balance. Essential reading for the serious Bikram yogi.

1 out of 5 stars This book sucks.......2007-08-16

Make sure to read Scott Meredith's review--he is right on! I won't repeat his excellent and insightful comments. However, I ended up with a completely different conclusion from his.

Bikram's book is by far the worst yoga book I ever bought. He comes across as arrogant, condescending and annoyingly opinionated. As Meredith points out, Bikram's discussion of yoga is biased (as if he came up with the whole concept of yoga!), and the descriptions of asanas (i.e., poses) is so simple and crude that I wouldn't be surprised if most people without prior yoga experience ended up injuring themselves following his instructions.

The biggest disappointment for me was to learn about the size of Bikram's ego. He comes across so biggeted, conceited and pompous that I stopped reading the book half way in. I kept hoping that his ego would get out of the way, but nope, that didn't happen... This is the first yoga book I ended up throwing out.

Want something way better to read? Check these out for asanas and general backgroud on practice:
1. Iyengar's "Yoga" and "Light on yoga", as well as his daughter Geeta's "Yoga: A gem for women." These are classics and for a good reason: they are clear, detailed, unbiased, and geared towards helping readers appreciate the subtleties of each asana.
2. Eric Schiffman's "Yoga: The spirit and practice of moving into stillness." You probably won't get any better, detailed instructions and descriptions. Tons of pictures too!
3. Miriam Austin's "Cool yoga tricks." I think the goofy title of this book underplays the quality of its content. This book is awesome when it comes to using props and adjusting asanas to fit your body.
4. Silva, Mira and Shyam Mehta's "Yoga the Iyengar way."
5. Gary Kraftsow's "Yoga for wellness." THE book on Viniyoga.
6. David Swenson's "Ashtanga yoga: The practice manual." This is perhaps the best one I found on Ashtanga. I really like the sequencing of poses and his inclusion of drishties (where to look at when you're in a pose).

For yoga philosohy, try these:
1. Georg Feuerstein's "The yoga tradition"--there's just nothing better than this... This guy definitely knows his stuff. The book is encyclopedic.
2. Peter Connolly's "A student's guide to the history and philosophy of yoga."
3. Desikachar's "The heart of yoga."
4. Eliade's "Yoga: Immortality and freedom."
5. Carrera's "Inside the yoga sutras."

I ended buying Bikram's book not only to round up my library, but also to learn more about his style. I'm not too crazy about, as Meredith points out, the "one size fits all" approach that characterizes Bikram's yoga (in addition to the heated rooms), but hey, that's his shtik. What I really did not appreciate at all was his constant self-aggrandizing throughout the book. I found it way too distracting and unbecoming a yoga teacher.

1 out of 5 stars Very few pictures, how do you learn???.......2007-08-07

I was very disappointed with this book and would give it 0 stars if I could. On the advice of my doctor I bought it online to learn some stretching exercises for some pain I'm experiencing. Over 300 pages and there are very few pictures. Maybe I bought the wrong book, but how is one to learn if there are no pictures demonstrating how to make the positions?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mastery is not very popular, but its what we all want!.......2007-09-30

This book simply outlines the difference between the path of mastery and the path we are mostly all on. Leonard, a national treasure and pioneer in the human potential movement since the 1950s, points to some helpful things to notice and maintain awareness of, like the fact that what allows us to stay on the path of mastery is the ability to keep going when we are seemingly stuck on a plateau, and it doesn't 'feel like' mastery. He also discusses practice in a way that is both lucid and inspiring. I have ordered many extra copies and given them to clients as gifts, because I know that what makes us truly happy is the results that flow from being on our own path of mastery.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Rules for a Better Life.......2007-08-30

George Leonard is a marvel. Spending just two hours in his presence sent me to the computer to order everything he's written, so yes, this is written by a raging fan. Having gotten that disclosure out of the way, I found the book nearly as inspirational as the man himself. This is a self-help book that makes sense. Leonard provides a straightforward explanation of the five keys, supported by clear examples of what they look like in action as well as preparation for potential pitfalls.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2007-08-14

I don't believe there is any other book on the market, which covers this topic. Mr. Leonard speaks on the concept of mastery. How to take a subject, any subject, and how to go from level 0, to complete mastery. Like all Great books, it is short, simple and straight forward. This is one of those books, that should be bought, and placed on your upper shelf for continuous review.

It should be pointed out, this is NOT a self-help book. It's about mastery: What is is, and what's required to get there.

5 out of 5 stars Short, yet efficient.......2007-07-08

Most of you reading are probably aware of the self-help field of literature. If that is the case, you're well aware that the amount of literature out there for self-improvement is astonishing and overwhelming. There's a lot of good material, a lot of fluff, a lot of recycled/similar ideas, and some jewels. You may even be reading a book you really enjoy until you run into some New Age material that turns you off. Lucky for you, this book will not waste your time like countless other books.

George Leonard is obviously a really sharp guy. He has been the teacher and the student for many years, and is still to this day each of those. George speaks from experience, and is gifted in the ability to clearly and efficiently communicate to the reader. I'm naturally skeptical about what such a small book can teach me, but 30 pages in and I was hooked.

Like any other book, this one won't change you. You still have to put in the time and effort to enact change in your life. Fortunately, George will guide you to/on this path of mastery, and the book is easy for later reference. Be aware that there are physical exercises towards the end of the book that will require a partner if you choose to try them. Good luck on your personal path of mastery!

3 out of 5 stars Mastery is not Masterful.......2007-01-22

This book is well written and has some nuggets of truth, but the concepts are poorly defined. Nowhere is that better exemplified than in the section where the author explicitly asks "what is real" and talks about something being "more real" than something else. If there was ever an absolute, reality is it. Either something is real, or it's not. There are no shades of reality.

What the author poses as mastery is accepting and enjoying a path that is mostly plateaus separated by "breakthroughs" allowing you to advance to higher levels. While there may be breakthroughs, I strongly suspect the author is using the wrong measurements. For example, in martial arts, if one looks at the belts, then there would be plateaus, but if you look at the person, I would expect you to be able to see advancement almost every week. The same goes for using job titles to denote "plateaus" at work. Unfortunately, accepting this would prevent the author from ranting about how poor the culture is now with its focus on quick results, a rant the author indulges in more than once. Again, there is some truth to his idea, but his objection should be to results that are incommensurate with the work put in. Those who want to lose 40 pounds in 4 months without changing exercise or diet haven't got a chance. Those that want to get rich quick without hard work, won't. But looking for results, quickly and regularly, is a good way of ensuring progress to your goals.

Another challenge I had with the book was vocabulary - in a few places the author chooses to redefine words. The biggest example of that was in the 3rd key to mastery which he refers to as "surrender", but is in fact trust.

Much of the rest of the author's path to mastery, I would agree with - it is a long (never-ending in fact) road, there are no shortcuts, and to persevere you must enjoy the road as much if not more than the highlights along the way (since there is no end goal).

The author also includes some additional chapters on how to make a significant change in your life and get more energy in your life, which can both be used for mastery or other goals.

In summary, Mastery has some good information in it, but one must put up with (and weed through) some bad information to get it.

Book Description

In this national bestseller -- Martin Seligman's most stimulating, persuasive book to date -- the acclaimed author of Learned Optimism introduces yet another revolutionary idea. Drawing on groundbreaking scientific research, Seligman shows how Positive Psychology is shifting the profession's paradigm away from its narrow-minded focus on pathology, victimology, and mental illness to positive emotion and mental health. Happiness, studies show, is not the result of good genes or luck. It can be cultivated by identifying and nurturing traits that we already possess -- including kindness, originality, humor, optimism, and generosity.

Seligman provides the tools you need in order to ascertain your most positive traits or strengths. Then he explains how, by frequently calling upon these "signature strengths" in all the crucial realms of life -- health, relationships, career -- you will not only develop natural buffers against misfortune and negative emotion, but also achieve new and sustainable levels of authentic contentment, gratification, and meaning.

Download Description

Over a decade ago, Martin Seligman charted a new approach to living with "flexible optimism." Now, in his most stimulating and persuasive book to date, the bestselling author of Learned Optimism introduces the revolutionary, scientifically based idea of "Positive Psychology." Positive Psychology focuses on strengths rather than weaknesses, asserting that happiness is not the result of good genes or luck. Seligman teaches readers that happiness can be cultivated by identifying and using many of the strengths and traits that they already possess - including kindness, originality, humor, optimism, and generosity. By frequently calling upon their "signature strengths" in all the crucial realms of life, readers will not only develop natural buffers against misfortune and the experience of negative emotion, they will move their lives up to a new, more positive plane. Drawing on groundbreaking psychological research, Seligman shows how Positive Psychology is shifting the profession's paradigm away from its narrow-minded focus on pathology, victimology, and mental illness to positive emotion, virtue and strength, and positive institutions. Our signature strengths can be nurtured throughout our lives, with benefits to our health, relationships, and careers. Seligman provides the Signature Strengths Survey along with a variety of brief tests that can be used to measure how much positive emotion readers experience, in order to help determine what their highest strengths are. The life-changing lesson of Authentic Happiness is that by identifying the very best in ourselves, we can improve the world around us and achieve new and sustainable levels of authentic contentment, gratification, and meaning.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A novel approach.......2007-08-23

This book begins with a bang and got me very motivated. However, Mr. Seligman lost my favor in the later chapters which became or were at least interpreted by me as a bit preachy and self-righteous. I've read many such books and liked the focus on the positive. In the later chapters the message I received was that if you don't do A, B, or C then you are a bad person doomed to a life of unhappiness. So buy the book or don't but stop before the second half and you'll get more out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Two Steps Further.......2007-08-06

Although I'm not a psychologist (but a dilettante one), in the course of life, I have encountered my share of obstacles. In trying to cope with them, I attended to traditional psychoanalysis for some time. It's OK, if you have the patience - and time and money - to dig in the depths of your infancy or the long development of your personality. Besides, all the psychoanalytic theory comes originally from the ideas of a man. A brilliant e insightful man, at that (others not so brilliant came afterwards). But his doctrine is punctuated with flaws, like the famous theory of imprisoned passions. There are many people who live with that firm belief and, what is worse, live up to them.
Theorists of cognitive-behavior school, on the other hand, have reached the next step. With a therapy that focus on specific problems (eg. a lost of a child), they teach you how to think - and act - accordingly, if you are not to become a mental sick. ("What's to gain in thinking about your loss?"). It, too, has its limitations, of course. Serious mental or personality disorders almost always require medication, as well as more specialized treatment.
With the positive psychology of Martin Seligman, the discipline has reached the zenith. Although not intended, its lessons have almost become a way to sanctification. Understand me. This is not a warning for you not to open his books. On the contrary. But it's difficult to put his teachings into action without some kind of personal transformation, be you a religious person or not. In the above mentioned lost of a child, for example, maybe Seligman would inspire you to care of other children in order to overcome your bad feelings. Difficult, but fulfilling when put into practice.

5 out of 5 stars Intellectual & Insightful.......2007-05-12

Despite the fact that the field of Positive Psychology is new to me, Seligman managed to utilized his extensive intellect of the field & delivered a readable & insightful book. Along with various tools at the book's website, 'Authentic Happiness' offered me a lucid perspective about the power of positive choices; it also altered the way I view myself & others in a positive manner.

2 out of 5 stars This is science?.......2007-05-06

Professor Seligman addresses his audience in two distinct costumes. In the first, he wears the white lab coat of the scientist, and he presents findings in the form of regularities across population groups: this empirical data is descriptive, in that it relates what is the case and makes no exhortations as to what should be the case; it is also objective, in that it relies on a methodology that allows another scientist to potentially duplicate the findings. Seligman's second costume is that of the sage, or archetypal wise man, so that he can be seen as wearing flowing orange robes, or a comfortable tweed jacket, or the vestments of a cleric or rabbi: in such garb he tells us what should be the case; the methodology here is such that it positively invites disagreement - consensus is neither necessary nor presumed; instead of relating what humans do in fact strive for, he instructs us as to what humans should strive for.

If Professor Seligman wore each of these two outfits in turn, then his performance would be clear and comprehensible. However, he changes costume frequently, and without warning, and he often speaks as if dressed in an odd combination of both - white lab coat thrown over black cassock, his stethoscope tangled with his tzitzis. The scientist starts to sound like the preacher-man. This is not just confusing, it is deliberately misleading.
*
As a scientist, Seligman is helpful and informative. In an appendix, he provides the bones of a conceptual analysis of the term `happiness'. He dissects the term along several axes: firstly, by temporal direction - whether the happiness is seen as of the past, the present, or the future; secondly, by sensory or reflective faculty - whether the happiness is purely sensual, or whether it requires the engagement of rational processes; and lastly, along the axis of passivity versus activity - whether it is passively experienced by the subject, or whether the subject actively engages in behaviour which engenders, or even constitutes, happiness. This analysis might be incomplete, but it is useful as far as it goes. If you like, he distinguishes various `sub- types' of happiness. These `sub-types' can co-exist, and conflict, within an individual - thus it makes sense to say that an individual is `unhappy' with regards his/her past, but `happy' in the present; or `unhappy' sensually, but `happy' in terms of the activity that is being performed (say an athlete in great pain on approaching the finishing line of a race). By making these distinctions, Seligman makes it possible to comprehend the results of the studies he cites.
*
The studies themselves are interesting. Most of them track a sub-type of happiness that involves the reflective faculties, and which is directed towards the past - answers to questions along the lines of, `How satisfied are you with your life as a whole?'. As an example: one might expect that as a nation becomes economically wealthier, its inhabitants would respond to such a question more positively - the average `happiness' of the citizens would increase. Not so. If you sample the physically healthier segment of the population, they would on average be `happier' than those ill, surely? No. The beautiful, as opposed to the plain - happier? No. And so on. All these counter-intuitive findings are intriguing and, given that the limitations of the methodology are spelt out, uncontroversial. You can, if you wish, call these scientific findings, or at least statistical ones.
*
The problems begin when Seligman, or anyone for that matter, tries to do something with these findings. Seligman suggests that it is `better' to be happy. One can well ask, "Better in what way?". Seligman's answer has several strands. The most prominent is an appeal to self-evidence - he presumes that it is a ubiquitous human trait that humans prefer to be happy. His auxillary strands have happiness as conducive to a human society that is more productive (in some sense), more peaceful, and more knowledgable. His answer might be said to rely on common sense, or on uncommon practical wisdom, but it certainly does not rely on scientific method. Relatedly, he cites six ubiquitous virtues, gleaned from reading over thirty texts of traditional repute - while many other virtues are mentioned, these six are common to all. He then commends these six virtues, apparently the consensus of the thirty texts lending them the authority to be regarded as prescriptive. As a methodology this might well be pragmatic, but again it is not distinctively scientific. As a scientist, Professor Seligman presents the findings - but when he champions an increase in the amount of individual or collective happiness he does so not as a scientist, but as an ordinary citizen, or, perhaps, as a citizen who has read the wisdom of the ages.
*
Taking this analysis in a slightly different direction, one can ask what `sub-type' of happiness should be prioritized. Seligman's own taxonomy has made it possible to be happy in one way, while unhappy in another, so the question arises which type of happiness is most important. Here Seligman suggests that the `gratifications' trump the `pleasures' - that is, happiness involving the rational faculties and reflection is more important than happiness consisting of sensual pleasure alone; and that `active' happiness, that is behaviour that actually constitutes `happiness', holds a higher priority than a passively experienced subjective feeling of happiness. He goes further and claims that even more important is `meaning', this vague concept being said to arise when a human's activities (presumably happy ones) are connected to `something larger'. Again, one can either endorse or reject Seligman's ranking of the various sub-types of happiness, along with his claims in regard `meaning', but this is in no way a `scientific' dispute. No study can be cited, nor no experiment performed, to prove Seligman right or wrong. His speculations come from the armchair, an armchair where he has no doubt read many secular and sacred texts, but an armchair nonetheless.
*
While the paragraphs above mention claims which are, at least at first blush, plausible, Seligman also makes claims that are immediately disputable. Several reviewers have rightly taken issue with his advice about child-rearing. His speculations regarding God appearing as the culmination of some evolution of the universe are similarly unconvincing. Strangely, Seligman wishes to bolster his claims with weak gestures towards `science' - as previously, his topics here are, prima facie, not amenable in any way to scientific investigation, so how `science' is meant to intervene is utterly unclear. He uses the word `science' as some unspecified ultimate authority, almost as if he were appealing to a deity himself.
*
Occupying a territory somewhere between his more outlandish claims and his accounts of the responses to questionnaires, there is his account of `signature strengths'. This is laid out as if it were a quasi-scientific classification, as per genus and species in biology. Actually, the system here is one of Seligman's own invention, one which might prove practically useful, but one which is underdetermined by the objective data - one could, with equal validity, classify personality traits in any number of ways - it remains to be seen whether Seligman's classificatory systems attracts more adherents than the poet W.B.Yeats' theory of 28 personality types, and whether it is incorporated into a practice that could be justifiably termed scientific. Furthermore, Seligman's advice to cultivate the one or two `signature strengths' is not a piece of advice based on any established science, but the practical suggestion of a thoughtful man.
*
In this book, the actual recounting of scientific findings is limited. The problematic assumptions behind these findings are barely discussed. The `self-improvement' fraction of the book is extensive, and oracular - it is also, in part, misleadingly disguised as being directly implied by the findings and, consequently, `authorized' by `science'. The vast bulk of the book is actually Professor Seligman's personal recommendations for living a better life. You might care to listen to him, or you might prefer to listen to Buddha, or your local pastor, or to Robert Nozick, or Fyodor Dostoevsky, or to your mum and dad, or, and this gets my vote for what it's worth, to as many sources of wisdom as time allows.

3 out of 5 stars too much info makes it Confusing.......2007-04-11

This book has a lot of information in it. However, it is just too much for the book to be very useful in real life. I found this book to be one of the hardest to look up a quote or piece of information later. Which really negates all the useful information in there. If you can't find it, it's of no use. And it was absolutely packed with quizzes. I personally like quizzes, but I could not get my husband to read a word because it was too quiz-oriented. I recommend "Learned Optimism" over this book.

Second to none! This saintly leadership into holiness through lives of seven saints speaks to the very core of what God expects of all humans, to recognize the purpose for what God placed each and every person on the face of this earth to be. God desires us to love Him, will not force us, can exist without us, and yet guides us through the examples of others to serve Him in a capacity that we can all attain. The examples of prayerfullness are levels of deep communication with God and He with us.
You will find yourself in holiness in this book or it will find you at a depth that you can emerge to become more holy.

5 out of 5 stars Seven Spiritual Directors - The Doctors are In! .......2007-05-10

I am still reading this book - but I read a page or two - then rush to Amazon to order a copy for a friend who will love it; read another page or two or three - put it down, swooning a bit while running to the computer to order another copy for someone I know who will love it - at this rate I may never finish this book! But, this I know for certain - The Fulfillment of All Desire is going to be one of my favorite books of all time. It is already changing my life! I give it 10 stars so you must double my rating, Amazon!

Ralph Martin may have done his finest work and The Fulfullment of All Desire possibly will be his finest hour. This book does not just tell us what we need to do - and what we already know we need to do - it tells us how to do it!!! These Doctors of the Church have "been-there-and-back" and know how to help us find our way. As we listen and learn, we will begin to live the life of one with the Saintly Fulfillment of All Desire. Just order this book! I am working on "affection for sin" right now.

The Doctors are in! St. Augustine, St. Francis De Sales (I am in his office), St. Catherine of Siena, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux. I have a message from one of these doctors and it is this: "In the first place it should be known that if anyone is seeking God, the Beloved is seeking that person much more." That is from John of the Cross.

Product Description

Peace Is Possible is the first full and complete story of Prem Rawat. It documents his extraordinary life, from growing up with a father who was a revered master, to the day he first addressed audiences at age three, to being discovered by hippies at his home by the Himalayan foothills when he was a child, to his dramatic arrival in the West at thirteen, to today. When Prem Rawat was six years old, his father and beloved teacher showed him a special gift, a practical means to discover a world of peace within him. When he was eight, his father passed away, and he accepted the responsibility of spreading the message of peace. He attended school during the week and addressed audiences in the tens of thousands on weekends. He has spent the last forty years inspiring millions of people from all walks of life and offering this same gift to people. Controversy has not eluded him: he was only eight when the Indian media wrote that he was a sixty-year-old posing as a child. Few journalists have gone beyond stereotypes and taken the time to get a real sense of what he offers. While his message is translated into more than seventy languages, it remains a little-known secret, spread mostly through word of mouth. This book lifts the veil on Prem Rawat--the man, his life, his message.

5 out of 5 stars inspirational !.......2007-10-10

How wonderful to learn about Prem Rawat's history in such a readable and entertaining way. I was moved to tears and laughter many times. He has done so much for people all over the world, myself included. A good starting point for anyone seeking self knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Fun!funny!Adoreable!.......2007-09-26

I never laughed so much with my heart before I saw Prem Rawat. It feels like nothing I had felt before and well supported by kindness. Just out of the blue i picked a chapter from Peace Is Possible and started reading about these people who missed the Peace Bomb Festival because even though they tried to get there they got there a day late, I think. Whoever it was telling the story told it so beautifully. That's when out of the blue, I knew, young prem gave them something so funny to remember. It must have been a blast to write this book. I have started a book about a kind man, it is just the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars One for The Ages.......2007-07-26

Having been a student of Prem Rawat since 1973, I was hesitant to buy this book because I figured I already knew most of the information. However, much to my delight, there are many intimate details and stories of Maharaji's phenomenal life that I had never heard before. The book has been meticulously researched for which the author deserves thanks. I'm about half way through it, and I can't put it down. Even after 33 years, Prem Rawat's message, life, and knowledge are as exciting and as fresh as ever.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-09-17

It was very interesting. I couldn't relate to some of it, but overall, it was great!

4 out of 5 stars Found it at the Right Time Anyway.......2007-08-24

I found Shannon Ethridge's book, Every Woman's Battle, just recently and read it in less than three days.

Oh, how I wish I had found it when it first came out. I could relate very well with the temptation issues and I guess you could call it "levels of leaning towards sin," because once upon a time, I was more tempted.

I'm thankful to God that the temptation I used to feel isn't as strong, and that my husband and I are more mature in our relationship. He's my best friend and the growth that we've both experienced even on an individual level is amazing.

When I told him about this book and the one written before it for men, my husband actually stopped what he was doing and wrote the information down!

God is good. I may not agree with 100% of what Mrs. Ethridge wrote, but I can certainly give it 4 stars. I wish there was a 4.75 score to reflect just how great I thought it was.

People aren't perfect. God's Word is. When you see somebody trying, either encourage them or show them the right (scriptural) way to do it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2007-05-14

I enjoy this book and it gave me great insight to how other women feel and really helps me to learn about myself and what I want from a relationship.

3 out of 5 stars Read this book for what it's worth!.......2006-06-05

I bought this book after reading the back cover, which reads as follows: "When does an affair begin? Not with the first forbiddin touch...but with the first forbiddin thought. Unexpectedly, you find yourself enjoying a powerful emotional bond with another man. You feel like you matter to someone again. And the door you thought was locked so firmly--the door to sexual infidelitiy--is suddenly ajar."
The author makes some good points that may help a woman maintain her present relationship, for which I agree somewhat with but not totally. Where I differ is that I don't believe that one has to be drawn away from their present partner in order to stray. Sometimes people just click; however, the clues that author presents can help us recognize our wondering hearts.
Naturally not every battle mentioned in this book is "Every Womans Battle"; however, it is written in such broad spetrum that if you do have one battle or another surely you will find it in this book.
This is an excellent book and very worth reading. I am greatful that someone took the time to compile it.

2 out of 5 stars Helpful to the faithful............2006-04-14

I ordered this book on a recommendation of a dear and true friend who serves upon the ship M V Odulus, which sails throughout the world preaching it's Christian religion and bringing books and knowledge to those in deprived places on this earth. I highly recommend the book for anyone who is truly faithful and believing in Jesus Christ...it would definately be helpful from a religious aspect. But for those of us who are atheists, or only believing of a "higher power" or "energies", this book will leave you befuddled and chuckling ever so lightly. I think the book is truthful in regards to it's direct religious aspects, but personally, leaves the rest of us shaking our heads in religious discomfort.

2 out of 5 stars not much help-not much new.......2007-05-13

This book did not have anything really new to say-and so many others have said all of what is here in much more unique ways. I did not find it of any significant help.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2007-05-13

I was referred to this book from Louise Hay's site and fully expected it to have a more spiritual content. It is a good book for busy working women who want to get more time for themselves and maybe discover more of who they are. I am a stay-at-home mother who has lots of me time and knows herself pretty well but I was looking for a book on how to expand my life and make it more exciting now that my children are older. It wasn't that book.

5 out of 5 stars Can't think of anyone who shouldn't read this!!.......2007-05-11

What a wonderful book--perfect for women (or men, for that matter--I passed it on to my husband!!) in any stage of their lives. I loved the gardening analogy--it really clicked with me. The exercises were so easy to do, and so eye-opening! I particularly appreciated the "values orbit"--genius! What a simple idea for such an important thing for all of us to do--prioritize our lives. Once I looked at what was most important in my values orbit, I was really able to focus on that and "weed out" some other parts of my life that were taking my time away from my REAL priorities.
This really is a terrific book--well-written, easy to follow, simple but vital to any busy person's life. And the authors are so accomplished and have such impressive careers, yet seem so approachable and make reading this book and following its steps a real pleasure.

Book Description

As elegant as his bestselling How to Know God and as practical as his phenomenal The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, this groundbreaking new book from Deepak Chopra contains a dramatic premise: Not only are everyday coincidences meaningful, they actually provide us with glimpses of the field of infinite possibilities that lies at the heart of all things. By gaining access to this wellspring of creation, we can literally rewrite our destinies in any way we wish.

From this realm of pure potential we are connected to everything that exists and everything that is yet to come. “Coincidences” can then be recognized as containing precious clues about particular facets of our lives that require our attention. As you become more aware of coincidences and their meanings, you begin to connect more and more with the underlying field of infinite possibilities. This is when the magic begins. This is when you achieve the spontaneous fulfillment of desire.

At a time when world events may leave us feeling especially insignificant and vulnerable, Deepak Chopra restores our awareness of the awesome powers within us. And through specific principles and exercises he provides the tools with which to create the magnificent, miraculous life that is our birthright.

I LOVE this book! I have read it three times, and each time it strengthens my knowledge of life and the Universe even more. Deepak gives scientific and spiritual information on how to live your life according to what your soul wants, therefore fulfilling your most powerful life desires the instant you ask for them. It really does work, and I consider this to be the most valuable of all the spiritual self help books I have bought to date! Buy it, you won't regret it.

Since 1995, I have listened to and read Deepak Chopra's books, tapes and CD's. Since I have TOTALLY enjoyed the tapes so well, I have upgraded to Dr. Chopra's CD audiobooks. This audiobook was patterned after my favorite audio book on tape by Dr. Chopra "Syroniticy". These tapes were listened to so many times that I just about wore the tapes out. So I ordered this CD set The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire", and I was even more impressed. It is very much like the original set of tapes, however, more updated and is again, as always, so inpirational! This is a must have set of CD's for any Deepak Chopra reader or listner!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book instead of "The Secret"!.......2007-03-01

Deepka Chopra wrote the book long before Rhonda Byrne's wrote "The Secret."
I admire Chopra's belief that if we go with the flow of the Universe and listen and look for clues that appear all around us, we will have a happier and more fulfilled life. However, he doesn't claim that if you visualize getting a diamond necklace, you will get one. "The Secret" is hogwash.

4 out of 5 stars You can fulfill your desires........2006-12-15

I bought this book and put the meditations into practice almost 3 years ago. As I look back, I can see that once I focused on what I wanted, I got much of it.

I wanted children.. a boy and then a girl. I got exactly that. A boy and now a girl. Coincidence? I don't know.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-11-07
