Angie Townsend married Owen Sutherland out of love. On their wedding night, though, a phone call to her honeymoon suite and an envelope delivered to the door with a copy of a post-dated press release made her wonder if she had been played for a fool. After all, their courtship had been what the public would call a "whirlwind". And their families had been rivals in the hotel business for a long time. Had Owen married her only to con her family into merging companies? Angie decided the consummation of her new marriage would be put on hold until she found out!
***** The early works of author Jayne Ann Krentz has long been my favorites. I decided to pull out a few of them, during my short vacation, and escape for awhile. This novel (along with "Family Man") is one of the best, in my opinion. It is loaded with romance, suspense, danger, mystery, and a gothic flavor. Victoria Holt fans would especially love this one. If you have not read this story as yet, you are missing out on a terrific time! Pick up a copy!
JAK's worst.......2002-10-31
This has to be one of JAK's WORST books. Don't get me wrong, she is one of my favourite authors and I feel nearly all her early works as Stephanie James and the others for Candlelight and Temptation hold up very well in reprint. In many instances, I think she demonstrates her shining talent, with a fresh spontaneity she is lacking in her last few hard backs. However, this is NOT one of them. The characters are dated, the situation, near ridiculous....sorry....just nothing going this.
I disliked the female character especially. She goes from logical, level head person one minute, to this very whiny, spiteful, unrealitic woman the next. UGH, spare me.
Save your money and buy Amaryllis, Zinnia or Orchid and have a much better time. This one should have been released like they did some of her (MUCH BETTER) Stephanie James and given a lower release price.

Good Read.......2007-08-24
My one major complaint...I read Too Wicked to Tame first. I liked that book so much I grabbed this one and wasn't too disappointed, just peeved that one of the secondary roles in this book was from TWTT. I am giving this a four only because it was not as good of a read as TWTT. The characters were just a bit too much, but I did enjoy it and I WASN'T disappointed (other then the aforementioned). Otherwise, I recomend this book to someone who doesn't focus on historical legalize. A bit of advice for those that focus on historical facts/legalize...if you're going to let this ruin your Historical Romance reading...stop reading Historical Romance NOW! All of it! Otherwise, just read it for what it is and ENJOY!
2 for 2.......2007-08-17
This author is two for two. I read her other book, Too Wicked to Tame, and then this one. I loved TWTT and was afraid Once Upon a Wedding Night wouldn't be as good. To my surprise, I liked it as much, if not better than the previous book. Sophie Jordan writes very likable characters put in some steamy situations. Honestly, some of the smallest sentences, or just a few words actually, spoken by Nick to Meredith and I'm fanning myself. I just loved the dialogue, the secondary characters were charming and, at times, funny, and I liked the story.
Another reviewer of this book questioned whether the author checked her facts. I'm sorry, but this is fiction--romantic fiction. As long as authors don't have their characters doing something totally off, like reading a book that hadn't been published until 75 years later or referring to real people who weren't around at a particular time, I don't really care if all the facts aren't completely accurate. So what if Nick couldn't have married Meredith. The kind of marriage she had certainly justified him being free to marry her and didn't lessen my enjoyment of this story.
As I said, it's romantic fiction. Does anyone really believe that every duke, earl, and viscount to be found in Regency England was 6'2", had a gorgeous face, and a physique not to be believed? I don't think so. Sometimes, a little inaccuracy isn't a bad thing.
A Fast Paced Read.......2007-07-21
From the very first page I was hooked. This book is a real page turner and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read more of this author's work.
Fabulous.......2007-03-28
This book was FABULOUS!!!!
I read alot of romances and this is up there with a "Night in shining armor" and "son of the morning".
Once Upon A Wedding Night.......2007-02-16
Lady Meredith Brookshire lives with her aunt and ailing father at Oak Run. Her negligent husband Edmund died leaving Meredith with nothing. Edmund's half brother Nicholas Caulfield has been located and should be taking over as the new Lord Brookshire. Meredith assumes Lord Nicholas will kick her and her family off the estate so she hatches a plan to trick him into letting her stay.
Nick wants nothing to do with his familial estate or becoming Lord Brookshire. He despised his father and Edmund. His arrival at Oak Run throws Meredith's emotions in turmoil. She expected Nick to be as cold and uncaring as Edmund but he appears to be neither.
The charade is up when Nick discovers Meredith's deceit. Nick decides to marry her off, but he quickly realizes that thoughts of Meredith with another man disturb him. He has no choice though, because he refuses to risk his heart.
One Upon A Wedding Night is a creatively written story. The plot twists kept me guessing and the angst had me constantly on edge. Nick and Meredith are both haunted by their pasts, but they find something very special in each other's arms. I adore them both. I wanted to throttle Nick for being so stubborn at times though, and yet, he managed to enthrall me and keep me rooting for him throughout the story. One Upon A Wedding Night is a wonderful, passionate romance.

Good book but did not capture me as well as the other books in the series.

This book was CUTE.
Julia accidentally shoots Heath Boscastle during a hunting party.
They were attracted to each other. Then they meet again years later.
This was a nice romance. Some of the names this author chooses makes you laugh. LOL She writes in such a humerous style the quirky names and supporting characters just fit right in.
Nice job!
Very romantic - I really loved this book........2006-10-11
For me this was the kind of book I truly love to read. The couple had fallen in what appeared to both of them to be lust several years before when neither of them were quite sure of the others true feelings. But they both lived with their romantic encounter and it never truly left them. They both regretted that they had not taken a few different actions afterwards that might have changed the course of their lives. So 6 years later Julia and Heath are once again thrown together although she is engaged to another, Russel and Russel has asked Heath to guard Julia while he chases after a French spy. Heath cannot believe it - he is supposed to guard this woman that he has not forgotten - and has measured all other women since. Soon the couple will be forced to test their feelings for each other once again. It is just so romantic and sexual and heated. You can feel this couple just explode right off the pages. I loved how they both remembered their encounter and they both truly regretted that they had not been honest with their feelings. It is great that they are given this second chance at love. The Boscastle men are one sexy charming family of rogues that seem to be absolutely wonderful husband material when they find the right woman. For Heath no other woman but Julia will do and he truly had me melting for him as he seduced Julia right into his bed! Great sexy historical romance!!!
...lick your lips...uummm.......2005-08-28
I picked this book up and devoured it in a day. The story grabbed me from the start, saucy characters, and great plot twists. It is a fun, escape from reality read. This is a story of unrequited love and passion that will keep you glued to it till end. The dialogue was Hunter at her best...witty and amusing. The plot moved along at a great pace. Full of enjoyable supporting characters and stories. Both characters felt "real" and made me believe they were in love with one another deeply. Both had great senses of humor too, which is always a plus. This book had everything you need to create a good romance: a dashing hero, a beautiful heroine and, most of all...PASSION! This book is sharp and fast-moving. Filled with Lovable characters, exciting and not too heavy action-mystery twists. Lots of laugh out-loud, I-can't-believe-they-did-that scenes and oh so plenty of heart warming moments. This was just the kind of romance novel I love. Wonderful characters. Characters that seems real because they are not perfect-something most novels like this lack. I absolutely loved this book. The author has a great gift in her ability to develop characters. I must have laughed a hundred times and I absolutely couldn't put the book down until I was finished. Wonderfully written! And very sexy Historical Romance book. I loved, loved ,loved this book!!!
This book is by far my favorite of the series.

This is the last volume of the trilogy about the Boscastles, starting with The Seduction of An English Scoundrel and followed by The Love Affair of an English Lord. If you liked those two you would surely enjoy reading this one. Not much in the innovation line, the plot presents the usual irresistible alpha-male and the strong heroine. Still, a good reading for Regency fans.

Dear Diary,Four years have passed since the utter humiliation of my wedding night. But it seems like just yesterday that my husband left me--before consummating our marriage. So why, then, do I still harbor feelings for the selfish cad I once adored? Why did my heart quicken when I finally saw him again? I have my own life to lead, and my own secret, romantic novels to write. Samuel Firth has no place in my world.Of course, the only reason Samuel returned to England was to contest my wish for a legal separation. He says he will not grant it--unless I agree to play the role of his wife until his place in Society has been secured. I knew he only married me for my noble name!Yes, I was forced to agree to his sordid scheme. But if he thinks that our bargain grants him access to my bed, then he shall be sorely disappointed. In truth, it shall be quite amusing to lead him on--and then spurn him as he once spurned me! From the private diary of Lady Cassandra Firth
Customer Reviews:
A `misunderstood' hero.......2005-05-26
This story isn't worth reading. Another poor dark misunderstood hero and it's supposed to excuse his blackmailing his bride in an effort to control her and seek revenge.
And to clear up what another reviewer said he paid to marry her WITHOUT HAVING MET HER AT ALL! She was making snow angels after she came home from school to be married to him.
Are we supposed to think this guy is a hero for waiting four years to come back and try and force himself on his wife?
I can't give a more in depth review then that because the book made me feel dirty just reading it. Borderline abusive relationships don't make me swoon with the romance of it all.
A Nice Escape.......2005-04-22
There are times when I feel the need to read the literary equivalent of macaroni and cheese--something comforting and warm, but perhaps not of the highest "gourmet" standards. The Wedding Night answered that need. It is an enjoyable Regency romance. Predictable, but also compelling reading. Young Cassandra marries the much older Samuel when she is just fifteen. Nothing happens on their wedding night, young Cassandra is too frightened and confused. Samuel leaves the country, returning four years later to a woman he hardly knows, but very much desires. Intrigue, romance, suspicion and betrayal follow. A perfect, fun, quick read.
The virgin bride.......2004-07-26
What happens when a marriage has been arranged to pay off a debt? Filled with naive romantic notions, fifteen-year-old Lady Cassandra Grey thinks that her wedding night will only be a kiss good night. Samuel Firth was obliged to tell his virgin bride otherwise. After witnessing the fear from this mere child, Samuel decides the only thing left to do is leave. He departs for a trip around the world, leaving his bride still a virgin.
THE WEDDING NIGHT is set in 1820 in London, England, some four years since Cassandra last saw her husband. She's all grown up, very beautiful and intelligent, an author on the verge of releasing her first book and ready to gain her independence. She knows Samuel provided for her generously during the last four years while he lived a very colorful life moving from one city to another. She still harbors deep resentments about her wedding night and the humiliation she faced. Her only thought is to gain her freedom and maintain an air of respectability, but she must first have permission from Samuel for a separation. He, on the other hand, has other intentions and a separation was not a part of it. His original plan was to wait until she grew up before consummating the marriage and then take his rightful place in society. After a chance meeting between them in the theatre, a separation is out of the question. In fact, he comes up with a scheme to appear agreeable to her proposal while at the same time deviously plotting to seduce her.
As Samuel puts his plan in motion, he discovers that much has gone astray in his absence. Someone has been stealing from him, there are those that have designs on his wife, and the family that he felt deserted him has been meddling in his affairs. To complicate things further, Samuel finds himself completely entranced with Cassandra and very protective of her. Will Cassandra gain her independence? Has Samuel bitten off more than he can chew?
In her fifth book of the Rosebuds series, Barbara Dawson Smith has written an action-packed historical romantic tale that continues the story of the three matchmaking grandmothers. She weaves in a lesson on the strength of family love and respect around a believable love story and a couple of whodunit subplots to keep readers on the edge of their seats. I felt the character development was awesome in this near flawless stand-alone compilation. Ms. Dawson Smith is indeed a great storyteller, and I, for one, will be looking to read more from this author.

an average ok-ish read.......2004-04-12
Using several well known plot devices and gambits, authour Barbara Dawson Smith finishes her Kenyon brothers/Rosebud series with "The Wedding Night." And whether or not readers think that the novel is a worthwhile buy/read is going to be strictly a matter of personal taste and inclination.
In a bid to start his own socially powerful dynasty (so that he can compete with his legitimately born Kenyon half brothers), rich Samuel Firth marries fifteen year old Lady Cynthia Grey. The only daughter of a gambling mad duke, Cynthia's father agrees to marry off his young daughter in return for money in order to pay off his gambling debts. A shy and scholarly girl, Lady Cynthia approaches her marriage with the notion that she's marrying some kind of romantic hero. Except that Samuel is no romantic hero: he's cold and forbidding and when he tries to consummate his marriage, his young wife breaks down into hysterical tears. Disgusted, Samuel leaves his wife and departs in order to make a trip around the world.
Four years pass, and Cynthia has grown into a lovely and intelligent young woman, used to leading a life without a husband. Desiring her independence, Cynthia hits on the notion of asking for a legal separation from Samuel. And when Samuel gets wind of this, he rushes home to confront his errant wife. A legal separation would not help him in his plan to throw his social success in Kenyons faces. But instead of finding a meek and biddable wife, he finds an independent and determined young lady -- a young lady that he would very much like to bed. And so Samuel comes up with a plan: if Cynthia will live with him for a while, and help him establish himself with the ton, he will sign her separation. Of course Samuel has every intention of seducing his wife into seeing things his way. But he has a lot to contend with: a wife who (apparently) has close ties to his despised Kenyon relatives and who is determined not to share a life with him; someone who is trying to kill him; and a horde of suitors who seem to be in love with his wife! Can Samuel pull off his scheme?
Unfortunately, there is really nothing new (plot-wise) or fresh about "The Wedding Night" -- yet another older man who marries a teenager, and who takes off for 4 years because she's unable to contemplate being bedded by him, but who returns when she demands a legal separation from him -- even the characters are the same stock characters we see in most romance novels: a remote and much misunderstood hero who hides a heart of gold, a heroine who is clever and beautiful and who is still in love with her undeserving spouse, etc. So that whether or not you will glean any satisfaction from reading this novel will depend on whether or not you are a fan of the series. Even there, however, you might be a little disappointed: in earlier novels, the eldest Kenyon brother (Michael) has always expressed reservations about Samuel's character, yet here, every Kenyon is eager to embrace Samuel, thus making his reluctance to have anything to do with them (while understandable) seem churlish. Whatever reservations the Kenyon brothers may have had about Samuel seems to have evaporated somewhere along the way! Even the stalking/attempted murder subplots failed to lift the book from it's average read status.
I found "The Wedding Night" to be a well written novel that rehashed several overused plot devices, and as such was a middling ok-ish read -- but there really was no compelling reason to urge anyone to rush out and buy/borrow this book.

An engaging read.......2001-01-11
On the night of their siblings' wedding, Ryder Redstone and Daisy Harding unknowingly created a child together and went their separate ways. Daisy returned to her life as a mousy teacher and Ryder returned to his life on the road with a multitude of women. Or at least they tried to. A few months later, Daisy is fired for her unwed pregnancy and heads to Whitehorn to spend time with her sister. Ryder returns as a favor to his brother to help out around the ranch. Now the two must deal with the repercussions of that evening.
Karen Hughes has written a story with an engaging style and even more engaging characters. Daisy isn't blatantly beautiful and Ryder is not as careless as he seems. There is a lot more to them than meets the eyes and Hughes illustrates this throughout the story. I really found a lot to admire about Daisy though her denial of Ryder as the father is patently false. Her denial gradually grows irrational and even irritating. Quite surprisingly, Ryder was the more admirable of the two because of his patience, his concern for her, and ultimately because of his love. He is willing to set a lot of his pride aside for Daisy, which clearly wasn't an easy thing for him. He was also ready to make sacrifices for himself for the sake of his child and he had a great deal of faith in Daisy while she continuously second-guessed him even in the face of his devotion to her.
Great book!.......2000-12-20
Let's all hope that Karen's not so busy in her new job at the White House that she doesn't have time to write more classics like this one!

Customer Reviews:
Heroine lacking.......2003-07-19
Geralyn Dawson shows us once again that humor and romance do go hand in hand. She is wonderfully witty and imaginative. I also thouroughly enjoyed the return of the "McBride Menaces", who allied themselves with the newly christened "Ross Rascals" in their goal of permenantly reuniting the title couple. What I didn't like was the heroine herself. After she grew up a little she was definitely less selfish and self centered but she blamed Nick for everything from their horrid wedding night to their failed marriage up to the very end. In actuality she was the one to balme. If she had trusted her husband to get her through the uncomfortable part of the wedding night unscathed (well, mostly unscathed) she might have realized a lot sooner than she did that she actually liked sex. I mean really, how much beating to his pride can a man take? She also displayed her lack of loyalty to her husband when she didn't believe him about Susan. I could sympathize with her being young and not wanting to leave her family to a strange country and all that but how in God's name could she blame him for going?! His father had just been proclaimed dead! She acted like a bouquet of flowers and a tersly worded note at the funeral would be sufficient! I was appalled at the lack of sensativity that Mrs. Dawson displayed in her. Insensativity is supposed to be for men. Other than her the book was fun, witty, and charming.
truly a good luck wedding night.......2001-10-22
Despite the book entitled 'The Bad Luck Weeding Night', I would rate this offering 5 out of 5. It keep me laughing all the way. I was delighted by the stubornness of the main characters, Nicholas and Sarah. They just seem perfect for each other. The sisters are also a delight, as they truly resemble the famous 'McBride Menaces'. This is a must buy!
A Decent Effort.......2001-06-16
This book made me want to read more about the charaters involved... however that was also the weakness of it. It devoted too many page to people, places and events that didn't take place in these pages. The situations seemed a little contrived too, but for beach reading, it's okay.
A Real Disappointment.......2001-04-19
The plot was "Dumb". Sarah was a stupid character who lacked "character". Nick was just as boring. Not romantic or lightly sensual at all. What a waste of my eye sight, money & time.
Nothing Special.......2001-04-18
I can't say I enjoyed this book. At the beginning, the hero and heroine were quite immature, but that was the point. However, ten years later I don't think they'd advanced all that far. The only thing that made their later relationship believable was the fact that they'd corresponded regularly over the course of ten years, and that correspondence meant a lot to each of them. However, when they were reunited after ten years, they didn't seem to know that much more about each other than when they'd parted. I thought the characters were entirely too modern in their attitudes and behavior, and I found it somewhat annoying. I couldn't really lose myself in this book, and to me that's the whole point of reading fiction.

But Nicholas isn't prepared to let Cally go. Indeed, he has a harsh ultimatum to deliver: give him their long-overdue wedding-night - and provide him with an heir!
Eventhough the idea is not new, I love most of Ms.Craven's story line, very typical and interesting.

But while Sloan has always been a love-'em-and-leave-'em kind of guy, this fling somehow seems different. Why does he find himself fantasizing about a life with Cassidy after the cruise is over?
