One of the most anticipated experiences in every bride-to-be’s wedding planning is choosing her bouquet. However, when faced with the real-life sea of styles and flowers, a bride-to-be may soon become overwhelmed.
To Have & To Hold offers more than 150 unique bouquets, pictured in 200 luminous photographs, that incorporate scores of seasonal flowers both familiar and exotic, as well as flowering branches, pinecones, leaves, feathers, family lace—even fruits and herbs—to guide her in her decision.
David Stark and Avi Adler escort the bride-to-be through today’s maze of flowers and bouquet styles, identifying the indispensable basics: Labels and deconstructed bouquets name every flower. Lists of flowers available by season and by price help narrow the choices based on when the wedding will take place and what the budget is. Also included are practical details such as how to care for flowers, how to make your own stunning and cost-effective bouquet, how to hold the bouquet and then how to preserve it, and how to tie in boutonnieres, bridesmaids’ bouquets, and flower girls’ baskets. In addition, the authors’ personal anecdotes offer sage advice on bouquet do’s and don’ts.
To Have & To Hold has a bouquet to strike any fancy for every kind of wedding day.

The most inspiring wedding flower book.......2007-10-02
When looking for something fresh and new for my wedding flowers, I sifted through dozens of books that showed the same old arrangements and nothing new or creative. I own another of Stark and Adler's books, and was pleased to see they had written a wedding flower book. I was over the moon after ordering the book. The designs are simply beautiful! The flower choices are artistic, simple and help a bride to choose the right flowers for the growing season in which her wedding takes place. I carried this book to my florist and we recreated several of the arrangements for my bridal bouquets and table arrangements. Everyone was impressed with the floral arrangements and the vibrant color choices. This is the one book you need, if you are looking for a fresh, vibrant and artistic look for your wedding.
Large Photos Do the Trick.......2007-08-25
I'm marrying in November and went to the library to look up books on wedding flowers; this one came out to be my favorite so far. Although some of the advice is a little too frou-frou for my tastes (if you want Spring flowers in December, then have at it!), the bouquets and flowers are gorgeous. I actually read the captions for the photos more than anything else.
The book is quite inspiring with several flower types that you never thought to use, plus interesting wrapping of the stems.
My biggest cheer is for the size and quality of the photos. You can search online all you like for beautiful bouquets, and most of the time you get pixelated crap with colors that don't match the flowers at all.
beautiful bouquets.......2007-08-14
I bought this book for my sister who is getting married soon. She loved the book! It has given her great ideas and pictures for her to express to her florist what she wants. Most of the bouquets are unique and the wrappings around the flowers are a wide variety and have great ideas. I would recommend the book.
Excellent.......2007-07-24
Es una estupenda referencia sobre las ideas que buscan las personas cuando de solicitar ramos para boda se refieren... incluso algunas quinceañeras lo han tomando como referencia para escoger el ramo que llevarán a la iglesia.

Book Description
What happens when your Prince Charming turns out not to be so charming after all? In To Have and To Hold, bestselling author Jane Green offers a sizzling, highly entertaining look at romantic relationships after we say “I do.”
Alice knows she should be happy. A charming twenty-eight-year-old with a successful catering business, she’s always dreamed of a rose-covered cottage in the English countryside, filled with children and animals and home-cooked meals. Her favorite attire is comfy jeans, her best manicure features garden dirt under the nails. But when her teenage crush—the wealthy, dashing man-about-town Joe Chambers—wants to make her his bride, Alice is more than willing to play Cinderella to Joe’s prince. Never mind that he wants her to change—a diet, ice-blond highlights, stilettos, snooty gallery openings—and that he’s allergic to nature and kids. She tells herself she’s happy to sacrifice for love, and besides, with Joe’s stunning good looks and high-profile career at a top financial firm, every woman in London wants to be in her shoes.
But that’s just the problem. Despite Alice’s efforts to be the perfect wife, Joe soon reveals a penchant for being hopelessly unfaithful. When a notorious indiscretion with a female colleague forces Joe to transfer to New York, Alice’s life turns upside down. As Joe continues to sneak around, and her best friend’s beau offers a tempting glimpse of what real love could be like, Alice must decide how much Cinderella she can take before her deepest desires win out—and if she can summon up the courage to find real happiness on her own.
Delicious, witty, and packed with sparkling sex appeal, To Have and To Hold is an unputdownable read that will have you rooting out loud for its endearing heroine. A #1 bestseller in Britain, this latest tale from the beloved, utterly winning Jane Green proves that the search for true love doesn’t always end when someone dons a veil, and offers a lively, refreshing take on modern marriage.

Pretty good.......2007-08-15
Short book but I liked it. I really wanted to slap Alice and be like OPEN YOUR EYES!!! HE'S A SCUMBAG!! It was hard to read because of my feelings on cheating and whatnot. But still a good book and I really liked the ending.
An interesting look into one woman's journey to self.......2007-06-05
To what extent will a woman go to preserve the illusion around her? How far will she drift from her true self before she begins to paddle back to shore? This is the story of a wife living a carefully balanced life--of contrived appearances and comfort on one side...fear and complacency on the other. By tipping that scale, she finds satisfaction and fulfillment.
Surprisingly poignant .......2007-05-22
This book was in my to-read stack for about a year before I ever picked it up. This wasn't because I didn't want to read it-it's just that of all the books by this author I have read I only really liked one of them (that was "Jemima J" which is very good actually) and found the others to be, frankly, quite badly written (especially "Mr. Maybe".) But finally I picked this one up, expecting it to be a quick, uncomplicated read. I was wrong.
This book is actually a very in-depth exploration of marriage and infidelity. I was honestly surprised at poignant and sweet it was. This isn't the story of a wife who finds who finds out her husband is cheating on her and falls apart, it's the story of a wife who catered to her husbands every whim because she was terrified of losing him and then found herself again. And it's not corny or lifetime movie-ish at all. Quite a feat really.
It took me several days to read this, and I enjoyed it. I recommend it.
Four stars.
A Daring Character Study.......2007-04-09
This novel starts out dark with a very unlikable character. By the end, you'll see what was motivating him and cheer as he changes.
Chick-Lit with Heart.......2006-11-21
Jane Green has yet again produced an enticing romantic chick-lit novel. Alice, our main character, is the perfect trophy wife living in London. She has given up everything that she once called herself to be with her husband, including her dreams of living in the country with a large family. When event cause the couple to move to New York she finally gets her chance to live in the country (when they buy a house in Connecticut). As Alice spends more time in the country, a Joe spends more time in the city; Alice finds herself and what she most wants in life.
As far as chick-lit goes, I found this to be better than Bridget Jones, Edge of Reason. If you enjoy this genre of book, I can guarantee you'll love this novel.

A victory of an American family over the ugliness of war.........2000-02-21
A splendid book. The plot is intricate. The characters are well developed and believable. This book is an interesting study of the changes in the role of family in American society from the '70s to the '90s. Patrick, Kate, Gus, Della, Donald, Ellie and Betsy have all won a place in my heart.
At the begining of the book the husband Patrick, who in my opinion is a "male chauvanist pig" goes off to war(Viet Nam). Patrick is excited to be doing what he loves best --flying. He has felt trapped in his marriage and has little respect for his wife. As an Air Force pilot, he sees freedom and adventure. He wants to be a hero. Kate, stays home to be the perfect military wife and the perfect mother to thier daughters Betsy & Ellie. She is not happy that Patrick is leaving. She is devastated. What will she do with out her childhood sweetheart and her "lord of the castle"? He has promised her that he will come back to her. She believes him. For twenty years she believes him..... she is left to raise her daughters by herself with little financial support . Finally, she is able to symbolically bury him and look to the future with hope and Patrick comes back into her life. He the tragically different but expects her to be the same a woman of the '70s not a woman of the '90s
Great book! Sure makes you wonder........1998-07-16
To Have and to Hold was really a great book. The characters were all so fantastic. You just love Kate & Della. What a great ending too.
High quality reading-true to human emotions.......1998-07-06
'To Have and to Hold' was the best fiction book I have read thus far. It describes every key event in detail so that you feel like you are there living it with the main character, Kate. She becomes your friend quickly as you see her not only survive a terrible event, but come out on top with the aid of two incredible friends.
True to the deepest of human emotions do not be surprised if you cry and feel various emotions as Kate ages. Her feelings directly match those of people in her situation and maturing character. For example, she feels mixed emotions as her daughter leaves home for the first time to get a degree. I enjoyed the placement of this story in history (Vietnam War). It enabled me to live through the event and understand what it meant to real people. The novel is also full of surprises and unexpected twists in the plot. Be prepared for a thrilling ride.
Women will find Kate to be a positive role model, but not in any simplistic manner. She truly earns our respect by picking up her life from the most desperate situation of pity to personal control and achievement. Her deep commitment to her loved ones is admirable and a tribute to love at its best. The story will teach you essential things you need to live a successful life, such as perseverence, loving oneself, faithfulness, and learning to let go of the past as you forge your future.
I did find a small part of the book 'a bit much' when the character meets a new man. Sharing every interest from thoughts to favorite drinks seems almost too much at times. I felt we had departed reality for a brief time and was disappointed that an author who had just built up such a true, tragic story made meeting someone to be a 'Cinderella Experience.' This relationship had no difficulties; it was like 'floating on a cloud.'
However, enough said. The thrust of my review only can praise the wonderful writings of a masterful author. She must have great depth of character and experience to write with such accuracy and beauty. I appl! aud her. A must read!!

Book Description
The cabinets of obsessive Renaissance collectors were filled with rhinoceros horns encrusted with rubies and jaws of gigantic fish, stuffed birds in the most extraordinary colors, and glorious seashells of all descriptions. Today's collectors amass everything from Picassos to Pez dispensers. But why? In To Have and to Hold, Philipp Blom explores the history of the collecting passion from the Renaissance to the present.
Every collected object, be it a matchbook or a martyr's fingernail, carries a meaning that transcends the object itself; it is a totem. Single-minded pursuit turns the collector into cultural anthropologist. For Alex Shear, his collection from the post-war period-from vintage radios, fallout shelters, and Jell-O boxes to elaborate hair drying contraptions, bobby pins, and Barbie dolls-preserves an age of innocence in the form of the familiar household items that served as the set props for the 1950s American Dream. Alex's Renaissance counterpart is King Rudolph II, whose collection of the art and exotica of his day (housed in his ever-expanding castle in Prague) was breathtaking in its complexity and sophistication, representing the magnificent profusion of the treasures of a world newly explored.
Out of this glittering diversity of material Blom distills the themes underlying this seemingly elusive passion: conquest and possession, chaos and memory, a void to be filled, and the awareness of our own mortality. What emerges is the story of the collector as bridegroom, deliriously, obsessively happy, wed to his possessions, till death do us part.

Absorbing and fascinating.......2007-02-22
This is a book that takes you on a fascinating journey, is an enjoyable read and is also historically well-researched, so it can therefore be used by the student or academic as a useful reference. I came upon it quite by accident but now find it a very useful addition to my bookshelf. The story of the Ashmolean Museum's foundation was one of my particular favourites and really made my blood boil! Such stories are not often told about museum collections! I take my hat off to the author!
Stories and more.........2007-02-18
At first I thought this was going to be a survey of some eccentric collectors in history, on which is does not disappoint, but it turns out to be a lot richer and contain some real pearls of wisdom about life in general, and flashes of historical insight.
Reading through the chapters of this book was a lot like rummaging through a private collectors cabinet of curiosities. The chapter titles alone don't provide direction and only after a few pages does it begin to reveal its treasure. Chapters cover aspects of collecting as diverse as: people who collected experiences with women (Casanova), the collecting of body parts (religious relics), collecting memories, American billionaires who bought up European heritage (JP Morgan, Hearst), collectors of mass-produced items (milk bottles, food wrappers), Princes and Kings such as Rudolf of Hapsburg (17th C) who filled his castle with the worlds greatest collections and slowly went mad, collecting as a madness, as a substitute for love, as a form of autism, as psychology, as crime - and in the end, as a warning to all those who take it too far.
Worlds of wonder.......2003-05-31
Absorbing and beautifully written, with a great bibliography to lead you on in your travels through this fascinating genre. Blom does for the general subject of collecting what Basbanes did for bibliophilia in A Gentle Madness. Well worth the read.

Characters from mental hospitals and prisons........2007-08-30
The author knows little of the human mind and behavior, especially in terms of minds of the sexually abused (Rachel) and minds of those capable of abusing them (Sebastian). Simply put, in real life, Rachel would be in a psychiatric hospital getting treatment and Sebastian would be in prison for multiple rape and battery counts.
The prognosis for either changing totally would be improbable. Any change would take lots of hard work on both sides by them wanting to get better for change AND requiring efforts from those knowing how to help both of them.
I'm not saying a story such as theirs could never happen, it could-- in fact, it does, it's just extremely ugly. Because Rachel's damage would feed Sebastian's sickness, spiraling into a more damaged Rachel and an even more twisted Sebastian. We've all seen it on the six O'clock news, just to have it romanticized in a book is disturbing. And wrong! And well, misleading in a damn near negligent way.
So no Virginia, a man capable of raping a woman in Chapter 3 does not develop a soul and be nice by Chapter 20, and a woman who's been sexually abused by more than one man does not develop normal sexual behaviors & orgasms in the presence of said man, much less him slapping on his own version of 'sexual healing'.
Again, this is NOT how human's work-- a damaged woman with a dark history can't be the savior of a selfish, mean spirited man.
For someone like Rachel to heal, she'd need time, autonomy and freedom. And bluntly, a decent amount of asexual time and total rescripting of her sexual memories. For someone like Sebastian to become human, he'd also need a crisis that would cause a need to change and a woman that he couldn't abuse. So, for their relationship to start with rape? And for her to 'heal' and him to become 'good' is just horsefeathers!
I guess for me, reading this was like reading how someone poured gasoline on a floor and put a match to it--- but instead of a conflagration, you get pixie dust. Or a book where someone climbs Mt. Everest in 3 days in a bikini. Insane, unresearched and total fantasy. And scary too that people would actually believe it would happen, just because it was written believably.
So for me,it was an extremely dark, unpleasant and problematic read requiring more suspension of disbelief than I am capable of providing.
Truly Unforgettable Characters!.......2007-07-12
What an astonishing book this is. I read a lot of romance and mostly they are forgettable stock characters doing the same things over and over. Occasionally a book comes along that has such unique characters and riveting storyline that you will never forget it. These two characters have imprinted themselves on my mind forever.
I had no problem with the dark beginning, it was what made the book truly great. The risks Ms. Gaffney took in having Sebastian take advantage of Rachel drew criticism from some of the reviewers but I thought he was magnificent. Rachel was so withdrawn within herself and damaged by her years in prison that it would have taken someone as ruthless as Sebastian to draw her out. Did he take advantage of her precarious position in his household? Yes. Did he rape her? No. I don't think so. These two were bonded from the very start and Sebastian was probably the only man who was tough enough to reach her. Any man who came along too tenderhearted and afraid of pushing her was never going to overcome the wounds her abusive husband had left on her. She was never going to be coaxed out of the shell she'd built, she had to be bludgeoned out. And Sebastian was just the man for the job.
Rachel knew that too. That's why she didn't really fight him when he took her the first time. And Lord have mercy were those some sexy love scenes! Rachel's vulnerability coupled with strength made watching her slowly come back to life a joy to witness. Seeing her effect on the jaded, bored nobleman, knowing that she is saving him just as much as he is saving her was delicious reading at its finest.
This is a book not to be passed up. Buy it, read it, keep it forever because you'll want to read it again.
Props to Gaffney for daring to be dark.......2007-01-01
Sometimes I think we allow our modern sensibilities overtake our abilities to see an unusual character study and appreciate it for what it is - an absorbing look at what motivates people and what changes them. Sebastian, at the start of this book, is very dark, indeed. He sees the heroine more as an object and a curious amusement than as a human being, and acts accordingly. That changes when he is afforded a chance to see himself in the odious behavior of others. The second half of this book is lushly romantic as a woman emerges from a dark cocoon, and a man too long comfortable in the dark comes into the light as well.
This is a marvelous book that moved me to tears several times. Patricia Gaffney is a very daring writer. She dared to write ugly, in order to write beauty. Adult readers should be able to take it, if they can suspend the playing of those social tapes we all have running through our heads.
a book that nobody can like.......2006-07-28
Here's the problem with To Have and To Hold. If you like the first half, you won't like the second half. If you like the second half, you won't like the first half.
The first half has Sebastian as this self-indulgent aristocrat who happens to be amazingly lucid - the sections of the book written from his POV are just gripping. He's blithe and bitter and although he has a dark sense of humor, he's not a brooder.
During this time Rachel is a withdrawn, dead-in-spirit woman who has no pride and not much sense of self. She's been in a prison for ten years and whatever happens at Sebastian's house, it's better than prison.
So for the first half of the book, Sebastian is playing a cat-and-mouse game with Rachel. He pretty much rapes her; he certainly gets off on her fear of him. Gaffney does a really good job showing how his emotions are getting involved without his being aware of it, it's a very convincing transformation. On the other hand, any kind thoughts Rachel has about Sebastian make no sense at all and sound pretty awkward.
So that's the first half. And then, in order to make up for how bad Sebastian was, and give Rachel reason for fall for him, Sebastian has his awakening, he realizes what a jerk he's been, he decides to be better. From that point on he is a puppy dog. He does nothing but think of ever-more-sensitive gifts for Rachel; the sex is gentle, and then gentler; he's always having warm fuzzy thoughts and smiling.
Meanwhile, Rachel is reborn - comes to life again after her years in prison - and although I admit that she has plenty of reason to be wary around Sebastian, she does all the things that I can't stand it when heroines do: Sebastian says one dumb thing and she's going to storm out forever and apologies will never be enough; she refuses a marraige proposal because it's too late.
If you enjoyed the cat-and-mouse game, all the snoozy gushing at the end is a bore. But if you like tender meetings of the mind and heart, the mental and physical violence of the first half is offensive.
Gloomy, But It Is A Page Turner . . ........2006-04-24
TO HAVE & TO HOLD is the second book in Patricia Gaffney's the Wyckerley trilogy. Again, Gaffney brings her reader to the fictional English village of Wyckerley, this time into the lives of Sebastian Verlaine, Viscount D'Aubrey, and accused murderer - Rachel Wade.
When he agreed to serve as justice, Sebastian Verlaine was howling drunk. During his vile life, society had called Sebastian many things, but "Your Worship" had never been among them. He a magistrate? Why the entire affair would be a merry romp - a glorious way to relieve boredom. He continued to marvel over the absurdity of his well-chosen lark, until Mrs. Rachel Wade entered the prisoner's box. Then suddenly, Sebastian discovered an even better way to relieve his boredom.
Rachel Wade fascinated the jaded, bored viscount. He saw her as a straight-laced enigma and quickly became obsessed with her seduction. Cruelly, relentlessly, he pursed her. His intent? To be pleasured!
In earthly hell, Rachel Wade had spent ten years. She had served ten long years for the brutal murder of a deranged pervert - a demonic man called her husband. Now, Rachel Wade was "free." She had the dress on her back and the ability to hide her feelings. She would never again feel pain; she would never again feel pleasure, for defensively Rachel Ward knew better. Now, without choice, she would become the Viscount D'Aubrey's "housekeeper."
Gaffney pens a first-class Victorian novel. Sebastian Verlaine is not the normal run-of-the-mill romance hero. He springs from the pages as a single-minded, self-gratifying aristocrat. He is not an evil man, just a man existing in overindulgence.
Rachel has all the characteristics of a woman raised in a patriarchy social system. A system where: the head of the family is the eldest male, a husband rules a marriage, and overruling men govern society.
Patricia Gaffney does a remarkable job on this dispiriting novel. TO HAVE & TO HOLD may have started with much gloom and roughshod desire, but it finishes with renewed growth and glorious affection.

Product Description
The year 2007 will mark the quadricentennial anniversary of America s first colony--Jamestown, Virginia. In honor of this exciting benchmark, Vision Forum has published a newly revised edition of the Jamestown tercentennial classic, To Have and to Hold, an historical novel depicting the trials, struggles, and triumphs of the colony's early years. Written from a distinctly Christian perspective, "To Have and to Hold" brings to life America s birth, weaving a story of adventure and intrigue with providence and perseverance in colonial Jamestown, while outlining the trials endured by our forefathers as they built the New World. Read about swashbucklers, savages, and noblemen, as fictional characters mingle with the real Jamestown leaders and colonists. Seen through the eyes of Ralph Percy--a valiant warrior protecting and cherishing his wife, his duty, and the honor of God's holy law--"To Have and to Hold" will leave you with an appreciation for the sacrifice of those who have gone before, and a better understanding of our nation's history.

Still In My Heart.......2007-01-27
I read this book in High School. Its still in my heart, I have never forgotten it. I'm now 60 years old.
To Have and To Hold by Mary Johnston, 1901.......2006-12-12
My parents read this story to my brother and me when we were 6 & 8. It starts out slowly but gets really good, really fast. It has Indians, pirates, swordfights, one of the best (worst) villains ever (& his evil cohort), betrayal, sacrifice, true love and ventriloquism. We LOVED the story then and, as adults, came to appreciate it on new levels. Same goes for my son, now grown up, to whom I gave the same privilege of great story-telling as a kid. There's a 1947(?) movie based on the book but the book itself, of course, can tell more of the story with the very best illustrations - those from your own imagination.
Great book! Very timely!.......2006-11-30
I have read this book at least twice now and have enjoyed it both times! The storyline will keep you engaged and eagerly turning the pages until the very end so beware! Don't start this book if you only have a half hour to read! You won't want to put it down! Also a great, historically accurate picture of life in colonial Jamestown. Just in time for Jamestown's 400th anniversary.

Book Description
Middle-class family life in the 1950s brings to mind images of either smugly satisfied or miserably repressed nuclear families with breadwinning husbands, children, and housewives, much like the families depicted in Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best.
Jessica Weiss delves beneath these mythic images and paints a far more complex picture that reveals strong continuities between the baby boomers and their parents. Drawing on interviews with American couples from the 1950s to the 1980s, Weiss creates a dynamic portrait of family and social change in the postwar era. She pairs these firsthand accounts with a deft analysis of movies, television shows, magazines, and advice books from each decade, providing an unprecedented and intimate look at ordinary marriages in a time of sweeping cultural change.
Weiss shows how young couples in the 1950s attempted to combine egalitarian hopes with traditional gender roles. Middle-class women encouraged their husbands to become involved fathers. Midlife wives and mothers reshaped the labor force and the home by returning to work in the 1960s. And couples strove for fulfilling marriages as they dealt with the pressures of childrearing in the midst of the sexual and divorce revolutions of the 1960s and 1970s. By the 1980s, they were far more welcoming to the ideas of the women's movement than has often been assumed. More than simply changing with the times, the parents of the baby boom contributed to changing times themselves.
Weiss's excellent use of family interviews that span three decades, her imaginative examination of popular culture, and her incisive conclusions make her book an invaluable contribution not only to our understanding of the past but also to our understanding of men's and women's roles in today's family.
"Weiss has written an enlightening book that examines the dynamics of American families past and present. . . . Since Weiss is a historian, she provides analyses of her arguments that are factual rather than emotive, and her use of family interviews further contributes to a strong presentation. Overall, this is a unique works because its multidisciplinary approach informs but never preaches on the emotionally charged topic of the American family.—Sheila Devaney, Library Journal

A fascinating social inquiry.......2000-10-25
Most people believe the feminist revolution of the 1970s was the force that helped women re-draw the boundaries of family relationships, but this incisive exploration of the of baby-boomers' parents reveals the seeds of change were sown in the 1950s. History professor Jessica Weiss' book is a work of rigorous academic research, yet her lively and conversational style makes it enjoyable reading for anyone. Weiss explodes the myths of 1950s conformity showing how the dramatic social changes of the latter 20th century began with the more subtle shifts of the '50s. And she doesn't simply spin theories -- she updates a study that traced families starting the in 1950s, so we can hear the words of women facing the challenge of evolving roles.
To Have and To Hold starts with an exploration of how youthful marriage and early childbearing led to a redefinition of marital roles and goes on to consider how working women influenced the family's balance of power. Later chapters examine fatherhood, the quest for family togetherness, and the impact of divorce. And there's a fascinating evaluation of myths propagated by magazines with a sharp-eyed juxtaposition to what was really going on. Weiss even takes on Freidan's classic "Feminine Mystique" showing where it was on target and where it oversimplified issues. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a fuller understanding of how the great social quakes of our time have affected our families.
