Book Description
"Character" has become a front-and-center topic in contemporary discourse, but this term does not have a fixed meaning. Character may be simply defined by what someone does not do, but a more active and thorough definition is necessary, one that addresses certain vital questions. Is character a singular characteristic of an individual, or is it composed of different aspects? Does character--however we define it--exist in degrees, or is it simply something one happens to have? How can character be developed? Can it be learned? Relatedly, can it be taught, and who might be the most effective teacher? What roles are played by family, schools, the media, religion, and the larger culture? This groundbreaking handbook of character strengths and virtues is the first progress report from a prestigious group of researchers who have undertaken the systematic classification and measurement of widely valued positive traits. They approach good character in terms of separate strengths-authenticity, persistence, kindness, gratitude, hope, humor, and so on-each of which exists in degrees. Character Strengths and Virtues classifies twenty-four specific strengths under six broad virtues that consistently emerge across history and culture: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Each strength is thoroughly examined in its own chapter, with special attention to its meaning, explanation, measurement, causes, correlates, consequences, and development across the life span, as well as to strategies for its deliberate cultivation. This book demands the attention of anyone interested in psychology and what it can teach about the good life.

Thorough and thoughtful.......2007-05-11
This book exceeded my expectations. It covered in great detail the concepts of character, strengths, and virtues. Concepts were clearly defined, with extensive background and supporting information. While it is not a necessarily easy read, it is one of the most extensive and exhaustive works that I have come across. It was VERY useful and provided me with more information than I imagined.
A "must have".......2007-02-19
This is a "must have" for the updated and interested clinical psychologist. Now it is enough focusing on just the negative stuff. This is a good supplement to the traditional issues, and I think a good place to start to get to know the field of positive psychology
To make us better and happier .......2007-01-09
This manual of character strengths and virtues attempts to place the study and improvement of 'Character' at the center of psychological study. Its aim is to focus on positive improvements in ourselves so as to make us happier in our daily lives. Seligman and Peterson are major figures in the whole area of 'Happiness Studies' and shifting the focus of psychological work from negative to positive, from the previous aim of making us somehow tolerably unhappy to one of making us truly happy in our lives.
Their analysis involves a historical cross- cultural study of the various character traits. The central part of the book however is their presenting six major Virtues and the respenctive strengths that are apart of them.
For instance the strengths of the Virtue Courage are Bravery, Persistence, Integrity, Vitality,- The strengfths of the Virtue Humanity are Love, Kindness, Social Intelligence- the strengths of Justice are Citizenship,Fairness, Leadership, - the strengths of Temperance are Forgiveness, Humility, Prudence, Self- Regulation, The Strengths of Transcendence are Appreciation of Beauty, Gratitude, Hope for the Future , Humor , Spirituality, the strengths of Wisdom and Knowledge are Creativity, Curiosity, Open- Mindedness.
Seligman and Peterson aim at providing a guide to professionals in psychology by which they can evaluate their clients and provide them means for improvement. I do not have the professional credentials to evalute the work on this basis.
I can say however that this is a rich and thoughtful work for anyone interested in the whole subject of human character and happiness.
A positive, worthwhile, and encouraging model for a vital question.......2006-09-19
-The authors helped found the Positive Psychology movement, which hopes to supplement psychology's current medical model ("find what's wrong, then fix it") with a model for positive health ("find what's right, then encourage it"). Psychological health, which is not just an absence of disease, includes such things as character preparation, improved baseline happiness, realistic optimism, wisdom, and cognitive sophistication. The authors consider character and virtue indispensible for cultivating a good and positive life, and this book pioneers a method for classifying and evaluating them both.
-The authors provide, and then develop, definitions and assumptions to support their scheme. Next, they develop a classification scheme for character and virtue similar to the successful multi-axis Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), which allows psychologists and psychiatrists to diagnose mental conditions in a reasonably productive and consistent manner. Classification helps recognize basic elements, helps understand past performance, and helps standardize and partially quantify a protocol for evaluating data (this may possibly allow character to be evaluated and developed more objectively than we can today, although wise subjective evaluation will still definitely be necessary). Providing a framework for character and virtue is often better than saying "S/he seemed like such a good person," or "well, I just think that candidate's character is better."
-The authors use examples of virtue and character from several different times and cultures for their scheme, and conclude that virtue and character based on an internal quality of mind (rather than external events like popularity or a promotion) can be developed and can lead to a better life. A skeptic and postmodernist could snipe at this and argue we should not even try to develop virtue or that universal standards are impossible; I would suggest that this issue is too important to be left to the nay-sayers, that just because things are not done perfectly does not mean they should not be done well or better, and that many credible leaders have shown examples suggesting virtue, character, and a positive life can be developed. This is an eminently worthy subject. The authors' goals, efforts, and respectable methodology are clearly far better than just throwing up one's hands and cursing the darkness.
-In my opinion, this book is invaluable and exciting, and re-ignites a proud human tradition to make better sense of character, virtue, and positive cultivated happiness (eudaemonia). Goodness knows -- we could use it! Developing flexible standards is a proven augmentation for the opinions of a true expert. Sure, we would all disagree with elements of the book, but my only major criticism is that such a scheme is subject to the usual abuse by those who try to substitute a framework for good judgment.
-I would recommend this book to any educator, psychology connoisseur, or anyone interested in character (one of the few important questions for any human to ask). Hope this review helps you.

great way to teach manners.......2007-10-10
I bought this book for my 4 yr old who is an avid reader. She loves this book, and we've read it many times. Together, apart, a lot! I like the idea of using cookies to illustrate what each manner (or emotion) means. The 'retro' illustrations are wonderful as well.

I'm SO pleased I chose this book for my grandchild! This book is meant
to build good character in a child and with optimism! Before I give it to
my grandchild I should read it several times to REMEMBER...! a book for
ALL times, for ALL people especially those engaged in wars.
Cookies - Bite Size Life Lessons.......2007-09-24
Such a clever book - very different from the other kid books out there, and a great way to explain concepts that little kids otherwise have a difficult time grasping. A great gift-book, too!
Tasty Terminology.......2007-07-13
Wondering how to teach your preschooler or young child about putting others first? This book offers a sweet way to gently teach a child the meaning of cooperation, gratitude, honesty and more. Each character trait (positive or negative) is illustrated with a vignette relating to baking, eating and sharing cookies. The pictures are charming and endear children to the attributes. My 3 year old daughter requests this book over and over again and we enjoy the pictures and the humorous, sweet explanations. My favorite shows a little girl reaching over a long table to hand part of her cookie to a tearful kitty cat who has just dropped his cookie on the floor. It reads, "Compassionate means . . .Don't worry, it's okay. You can have part of my cookie." We all have something to learn from this book.
Amazing.......2007-07-04
I purchased this because of a wonderful review. I was not let down. My children, 4 and 6 love it as well.

A treasure.......2007-09-14
I have an emotional connection to this book, and by consequence to Rand, because it is Rand's work that motivated me into becoming a full-fledged libertarian. Rand, in it, offers a wonderful collection of essays, and in particular a theory of individual rights rooted in Aristotlean ethics. Were more people to read this chef d'oeuvre by Ms Rand, they would rid themselves of any ignorance on what she actually advocated (too many "critics" of Objectivism haven't the faintest idea.) Ms Rand was, in my opinion, too averse to reading and understanding her intellectual opponents and did not succeed in fully developing her system of philosophy, but she nonetheless provided the groundworks for future Objectivists (e.g. David Kelley) to build on. For anyone seriously interested in Ayn Rand and Objectivism, this is where to start.
In True Ayn Rand Fashion.......2007-06-23
As with all her writing, she's very aggressive in trying to get her point across. Though this was a good read, I would not say that it was profound, as some of the other reviewers have so asserted.
It would serve as a good stepping stone into the field of more contemporary ethics, but in order to really assess her claims and axioms, one must be well learned and read in the enormous literature of classical and contemporary ethical theory--something I am not.
I didn't give this a 5 star review because quite frankly I disagreed with her on various points, points where it seems that her reasonings had committed some form of fallacy or other.
A New Moral Philosophy.......2007-03-20
Ayn Rand's " The Virtue of Selfishness" is truly a new moral philosophy. Her essays in this book are profound. In this volume, Rand rejects the idea of self sacrifice and metaphysics and embraces rational self interest. Rational self interest is the philosophy that your life belongs to YOU, it does not belong to anyone else. YOU are responsible for your life, feelings and actions. Rand lays out the argument that self sacrifice, and altruism, have denigrated man's sense of self and caused mankind innumerable centuries of suffering. Man was only liberated by the Western Enlightenment and the use of his reason through science and capitalist economics. Where the Dark Ages end, progress and freedom begin.
Rand is an unabashed fan of America and our Founding Fathers. She is absolutely correct in affirming the fact that they founded the American Republic on the Enlightenment ideas of liberty, freethought, individual rights, amd scientific progress. Rand obliterates the view of the Religious Right that American was founded as a "Christian Nation" and the view of the Left that America was founded as a "conservative" nation. She points out that the Declaration of Independence was a radical document affirming the rights of all men as individuals. As a consequence of the American Revolution, capitalism unleashed nearly a century of classical liberalism, freedom from government, and individualism never before seen in any nation or age. Rand shows that the American Republic was the first nation to ever proclaim man as a rational being with inherent and unalienable rights.
The basic thrust that Rand is attempting to get across to the reader is that altruism and the concept of living for others is not only immoral, but fatal to the maintenance of an enlightened republic. Altruism is the root of all the other "isms" that afflict the world. Communism, Fascism, conservatism, liberalism, socialism, all promote the idea of the tribe where the individual is submerged and drowned out by voices degrading him with notions of original sin, "common good","public welfare", mankind's "depravity", and obligation to others. If you want a philosophy of life, liberty and one to truly pursue your happiness with, Ms. Rand's "Virtue of Selfishness" will help guide the way.
A natural code of ethics.......2007-02-23
THE VIRTUE OF SELFISHNESS is required reading for anyone to intelligently discuss Rand as a thinker. Objectivism, like mathematics, has a well-defined hierarchy and VOS is a precondition for understanding its politics and aesthetics. I think, however, that the reader will also find it has practical value. One of Rand's achievements in this work is the creation of a code of ethics based on reason. She does this by placing ethics in the appropriate context by answering questions like what a code of ethics is and why it's necessary. She identifies cardinal values and virtues and applies her code to analyze a number of important ethical issues (e.g., racism). Rand also devotes much effort to comparing her code with altruism (its antipode) and discusses the harm the latter unleashes. She rejects the choice between being an altruist and a brute as a false dichotomy and introduces the concept of the trader, the individual who interacts with others on a value-for-value basis. Rand lays out a compelling case that morality without religion is both possible and desirable.
Classic Material.......2007-02-01
I will never understand why Ayn Rand has always been snubbed by other philosophers. Most philosophers, if asked, will flat out deny that Rand was even a real philosopher. To me this is absurd. She has been called a hypocrite and even a cult leader, but such base ad hominem attacks of course have no bearing on the veracity of her claims. The Virtue of Selfishness is, in my opinion, the best of her publications. The title essay contains one of the most eye-openning and profound arguments I have ever read, which is this: Many people want to believe in immortality. In fact, most Americans DO believe that they are immortal, that death is really just a metamorphasis, that you carry on in another form, etc. If this were actually true, then morality would be of little importance. If we really did live forever then little to nothing could count for or against us. If nothing could count against us then we would have no values. If we had no values we would have no goals. And if we had no values or goals, morality would be irrelevant. Think about it. It's the very fact that life is FINITE that gives it meaning. This is an important lesson--that the immortality that so many hope and pray for would actually be a curse, just as it is to mythical vampires. Also profound are the discussions on selfishness. Selfishness is not a bad thing. Everyone does everything he or she does for selfish reasons. Even if someone appears to be behaving altruistically it is only because doing so makes him feel good about himself. On a sidenote, Nathaniel Branden also has an excellent essay in which he explains typical "party" behavior. We might look at people who love to party and think "Gee, they are such carefree individuals. They must love life and love having fun." Actually, Branden makes clear, they are miserable. They only act that way because of their emptiness as people. They are trying to distract themselves from their deep unhappiness. They try to drown out their lack of self-contentment with alcohol or other drugs, and with loud music and rooms full of loud obnoxious people. It's all a grand self-medicating distraction from the underlying problems at hand, and afterward, when the party is over and they are left alone with their own thoughts again, they are miserable. All of it, the alcohol, drugs, partying, rooms full of dancing and whatnot, is not the creation of happiness, but is merely the orchestrated cessation of unhappiness.
Book Description
By popular demand,
Doreen Virtue has created a beautiful deck of cards based on her best-selling book Archangels & Ascended Masters. The deck includes gorgeous paintings of 44 male and female cross-cultural deities, such as Ganesha, Merlin, Saint-Germain, Apollo, Pallas Athena, White Buffalo Calf Woman, Jesus, Moses, Yogananda, Green Man, and Kuthumi. The enclosed guidebook gives expanded explanations of each card’s meaning, and a brief history of each ascended master. As with each of Doreen’s oracle-card decks, the messages for each card are positive, accurate, and life-affirming.

Not A Bad Card In The Deck!.......2007-09-08
These cards have a wonderful vibration, all very inspiring, uplifting, encouraging. However, they are not without depth; they are more than just "sweetness and light." There is a suggestion that they can be used in combination with other kinds of Tarot (that can carry the darker undercurrents--necessary energies to be aware of in their own right), and I find there is a good balance that way.
Love it - Accurate, Simple and Enjoyable to work with!.......2007-08-22
I bought this deck to learn more about the Ascended Masters and to begin to work with their energies.
I was actually very surprised to see that world deities are considered ascended masters, along with New Age figures such as El Morya, Saint-Germain and others. In fact, the world deities make up most of the deck. My one complaint is that I actually would have liked the inclusion of more of the specifically "New Age" Ascensionist Masters (I realize many deities have become central Ascended Masters in the Ascension movement, such as Kuan Yin and Buddha, and would not have minded them being included), and seen the world deities go into a completely seperate deck. I was a little dissapointed, because I really did want to learn more about them through this oracle.
Other than that, I love this deck! Like her Goddess Oracle, I found the readings to be extremely accurate right from the get-go. I use these cards along with the Goddess Oracle to get an extremely well-balanced reading - in the accompanying book it gives a very simple method for using multiple oracle decks for one reading, which I recommend everyone give a try.
I would love to see an "expansion pack"-type deck for this one made that focuses more specifically on the New Age Ascended Masters, including the more intergalactic figures such as Ashtar. I feel I could really learn alot from such a product, and that was the original intent of purchasing this one. However, as a lover of world spirituality, it was fun to see many familiar faces in this deck, and to be able to to incorporate that wisdom into my readings and meditation.
Love Doreen Virture's Cards.......2007-07-27
I bought this deck to add to my collection of Doreen's cards. I have them all. These are as beautiful as the rest, I especially love the gold edges, however there are too many of the same cards from previous decks. The artwork is different but it's pretty much the same meanings. I was hoping for something new in this deck and it just doesn't have it. Even so, I will continue to buy Doreen's cards because I love the artwork in them and the positive inspirations.

Dynamic Accuracy!visionaryprophetdaniel.......2007-09-25
Agreeing with Reviewer Janet Boyer whom I deem entirely professional:This deck I bought first and 2 more after that. Here's a helpful suggestion to all inspired to use this kit: During any reading using a 78 card deck you can use this deck to read together by drawing an angel card with a reversed card to ease querents apprehension and to assist their soul-spirit with a one card angel reading and better yet draw an angel card to read with the final outcome card(works very well!!..and querents love it!) This my favorite that I depend on for reversed card bail-outs, final outcome cards, and lastly...Total angel readings.. From Beginner,Initiate, apprentice, journeyman,to Professional I reccomend this deck highly even with its shortcomings. I have this alongside my 78 card whever I perform a reading with extreme confidence.
Handy advice.......2007-08-09
Great to have around. You can do a quick reading and get on your way. Everyone who loves angels should own these.
Amazingly Accurate.......2007-08-03
I was given these cards as a gift and I love them. They tend to draw me to them when I have an issue in my life. When I pick a card, it answers my questions. Amazing!
Intuitive and inspiring.......2007-07-07
I have many of Doreen Virtue's oracle cards, and a few others by different authors. Healing with the Angels is an inspiring deck, and somehow, every time I do a reading, it reflects some aspect of my present, and that is indeed amazing. In this deck, there are 44 cards that provide a means of 'communing' with your angels...you can do a reading for yourself, for your family or friends. The enclosed guidebook helps to provide interpretations of the readings. Each card is beautifully illustrated by pictures of angels in different visual styles. Though the deck isn't as beautiful as some of the other Virtue decks, it is still worth adding to one's collection.
Make it a good day.... pick a card it can't hurt.......2007-05-13

Customer Reviews:
Lovely. Gentle. Reassuring - please read on..........2007-08-12
This is a very nice and gentle set of Faery Cards. I bought it after having owned the Froud-MacBeth set, which is magnificent, but stronger, deeper, profund and sometimes a little bit scary at first.
Doreen's card set however, is a soft and reassuring way to start the day. But do yourselves a favour, buy Doreen's 'Healing with the Fairies' book. They sell separately, but you will see lots more sense in the cards, and if you are a believer you won't be able to put it down. If you are not, this book may just change your mind. They both go definitely together.
Better still, do as I did, use this card set together with the Froud/Macbeth FaeryOracle cards. Doreen Virtue teaches how to do a two or multiple deck reading, and you'll be surprised at how the Faeries on both decks work together.
Highly recommended.
Didn't Think I'd like them but I DO!.......2007-05-14
I bought these because I love fairies. I did not expect much from the cards though. It was an impulse buy. Years ago I once listened to some audio tapes by Doreen Virtue and was not especially impressed with what she had to say. I don't recall exactly which of her many products it was but it seemed rather fluffy.
I have been pleasantly surprised by this particular Virtue product. I have really enjoyed the art and the messages. The cards have a lot of wisdom and each has a positive affirmation to go along with it. You really can't go wrong with whatever card you choose. The box says "There are no negative or frightening cards or images". I appreciate this as I have been cautious when it comes to Tarot cards which I believe might be dangerous--although I really know little about them.
I have been quite amazed by the Fairy cards. I have used them many times now--yet I haven't even viewed all 44 cards. I have seen only the back design of many of them. I am literally choosing the same cards over and over again while at least half the cards I have yet to come across. This is synchronicity! It is no accident. It just can't mathematically be possible with the number of times I have used them. There is something guiding me in what I choose. I do hope it's the fae. These cards work, are helpful and lots of fun.
As always Doreen doesn't disappoint!.......2007-03-25
I have been an ardent fan of Doreen Virtue's Oracle Decks and have almost all of her decks in my collection. I have had the Healing with the Faeries Oracle Cards with me for some time now but only recently have started using them. As is always the case with Doreen's Oracle decks, the cards are beautifully illustrated, here you are treated to beautiful illustrations of faeries...some are illustrated in the classical tradition, and others are more abstract, but they are all beautiful! The The messages are uplifting and enlightening and I have always found an insightful message with every reading. Some critics complain that her decks tend to have the same repetitive message, I choose to see it more as emphasising some important points over and over again so that we may reap the most benefits out of the readings.I can't wait for Virtue's newest deck!
Lighter Oracle of Fairies.......2007-03-11
I own three decks of fairy oracle cards, this one being one of them.
This is probably the most lighthearted of the three. There are many pictures that are sugary sweet and really show the lighter side of fairies. For those who are a fan of fairies like Tinkerbell, this is the deck for you. The majority of the pictures are beautiful and the decks works very effectively in readings.
Now as I just said, this deck is very light-oriented. If you are looking for something that shows more of a variety of fairies, I would highly recommend Brian Froud's, "The Faeries' Oracle," which is also an excellent deck to work with. Also, both Doreen Virtue's and Brian Froud's cards work well with each other as they are both fairy oriented.
This deck is much like the Healing With the Angels Oracle Cards, only it is much more polished in the book and the picture selections are nicer.
I would reccomend these cards to anyone who likes fairies or Doreen Virtue's cards. This is also one of her easier decks to read in my opinion, so if you are a beginner, this deck is very good.
Disappointingly average.......2006-10-20
Nicely worded and inspirational booklet, but many of the cards are very dark in color. These cards aren't nearly as nice as Virtue's Archangel Oracle Cards or her Messages from Your Angels cards.
Book Description
I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life. So begins Alexander’s extraordinary confession on the eve of his greatest crisis of leadership. By turns heroic and calculating, compassionate and utterly merciless, Alexander recounts with a warrior’s unflinching eye for detail the blood, the terror, and the tactics of his greatest battlefield victories. Whether surviving his father’s brutal assassination, presiding over a massacre, or weeping at the death of a beloved comrade-in-arms, Alexander never denies the hard realities of the code by which he lives: the virtues of war. But as much as he was feared by his enemies, he was loved and revered by his friends, his generals, and the men who followed him into battle. Often outnumbered, never outfought, Alexander conquered every enemy the world stood against him–but the one he never saw coming. . . .
Download Description
Alexander the Great (356—323 B.C.) ascended to the throne of Macedon at the age of twenty. He fought his greatest battles—including the conquest of the mighty Persian Empire—before he was twenty-five and died at the age of thirty-three, still undefeated by any enemy. His reputation as a supreme warrior and leader of men is unsurpassed in the annals of history.
In the brilliantly imagined first-person voice of Alexander the Great, acclaimed novelist Steven Pressfield brings to life his epic battles, his unerring command of his forces, and the passions and ambitions that drove him. A full-blooded, multidimensional portrait, THE VIRTUES OF WAR captures Alexander’s complex character. Alexander was a fearless commander who moved with such daring and speed that no army could withstand him; a driven leader whose ambitions knew no limits; and a man with boundless compassion for his troops, deep friendships with his generals, and profound respect for his enemies. Yet in the end, his noble qualities were subsumed by his insatiable lust for glory.
No one writes about battles as brilliantly as Pressfield, and in THE VIRTUES OF WAR he vividly describes the seminal conflicts of Alexander’s career, revealing the tactics behind them and capturing the blood, heat, and terror of the battlefield. He follows Alexander’s forces as they faced and defeated armies that far outnumbered them; delivers a thrilling frontline report from Gaugamela, the scene of Alexander’s greatest victory; and, in a memorable vignette, shows the great conqueror finally halted, not by an enemy but by the refusal of his worn-out troops to march any farther.
Epic in scope and magisterial in tone, THE VIRTUES OF WAR is sure to take its place among the classics of historical fiction.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to read, easy to put down.......2007-10-07
I guess I was spoiled by Mary Renaults Alexander Trilogy. In Pressfields book Alexander as a person just does not resonate. The admixture of modern military terminology and somewhat of a modern outlook does not gell with the historical setting and mindset as it does in Renaults novels. That said, the strength of this book is its battle scenes, and those are very well done indeed. Researchers have found it hard to recreate the actual battles that Alexander fought from the historical accounts - read Arrian for example to see what I mean - and Pressfield has done a great job of creating descriptions of the battles which ring true.
That said, battles do not make up the whole book and the remainder I personally found unsatisfying and not ringing true. Again, I suspect reading Renaults Alexander trilogy many years previously set expectations which its hard for other authors to live up to. It is very hard to get an idea of Alexander as a person from this novel. Seems very stilted overall. I did read the book through but by the end it was more of a struggle than anything else. If you enjoyed this book, take a look at Renaults trilogy, they will fill in a lot of gaps and present a good alternative view - and a far more sympathetic one for that matter.
There's a *reason* Alexander is still remembered.......2007-08-20
This superior historical novel really ought to be read before his latest one, _The Afghan Campaign,_ which enlarges on one of Alexander's later campaigns, and from a different perspective -- but they're really two separate narratives, so no harm done if (like me) you read them in reverse order. The narrative is Alexander himself, outlining the history of his conquest of Asia for the benefit of one of the cadets who study military science in the king's tent while on campaign. He begins with his early life and his succession to the throne after the assassination of his father, Philip, himself something of a military genius. But Alexander is a prodigy, being everything his father was and far more, with the ability to look at the ground and foresee the battle that will take place there and to foresee the enemy's battle plan. He also possesses an extreme degree of charisma; his troops adore him, even when (as later in the conquest) they fear his altered personality. By the time the Macedonians have passed through Persia proper and have completely changed their approach to warfare to suit the guerilla action in Afghanistan (the king's doing again), and have reached the frontier of India, they're tired to the soul and want only to return home. But Alexander dreams of standing on the shore of the Eastern Ocean, which he's sure can't be far beyond the Ganges. This is the story of Alexander's mental evolution, from semi-barbarian king holding sway in the remote north of the Greek-speaking lands to Eastern potentate who has acquired a taste for all things Persian. But Pressfield also describes the major battles along the way, especially Gaugamela, in fascinating detail. You can see the action, really see it, and understand why each side does what it does, and why the results are what they are. In that regard, this is almost a classical military science textbook. An excellent piece of work.
Mediocrity at its best.......2007-07-26
I don't know if the author is trying to make ancient history more understandable for the modern reader, but he turns me off. He talks about lieutenants and captains and regiments and corps as if Alexander's army were a modern one. It wasn't. To compare, try Colleen McCullough's infinitely superior 6-volume historical novel on the Roman Republic of Caesar's time. She uses the right terminology and gives the reader the feeling that both she, and now the reader, really understood how the Roman cities, army, and government were organized and what life was like then. You just don't get that with Pressfield. I assume he did research, but it's just not evident.
4 stars for the battles, 2 stars for the story.......2007-07-03
Steven Pressfield's novel is listed as historical fiction, and I suppose that it is. However, there is virtually no plot. The whole story is fight after fight- which to some may seem interesting, but I found it boring. Don't get me wrong, the descriptions are incredible, and it seems as if we are actually at the scene of the battle. Steven Pressfield is obviously a talented writer. I enjoy reading about battles, just not an entire book about them. But I didn't feel any emotions. I wasn't excited at the victory, and found myself skimming pages just to see if there would be anything of interest later on in the chapters.
Alexander the Great is undeniably one of the greatest generals who ever lived, and obviously war was a large part of his life. But this story- didn't make me go "Wow". If you're only interested in battles, then you'll probably like this book. But if you're like me, and you want a plot along with the battles, look elsewhere.
I'd recommend Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy: Fire from Heaven, The Persian Boy, and Funeral Games; or A Choice of Destinies by Melissa Scott; or Lord of the Two Lands by Judith Tarr; or even A Murder in Macedon by Anna Apostolou aka P.C. Doherty. All of these books are historical fiction about Alexander the Great. They all have battles, but they also are about his life, his companions (friends/enemies), and his emotions.
History as a Novel.......2007-05-27
After all the celluloid versions of the story of Alexander the Great, its great to read a book that gives a more realistic version, and a more human version, of the iconic Alexander.
Book Description
Even for the religious, life is full of questions: What is faith? Can my life be more satisfying? How can I deepen my walk with Christ? What does it mean to be happy? These bubble and boil underneath the surface of our everyday life. And though we ignore them, we know they point us to realms of wisdom or even mystery-to something more.
Author Mark Buchanan asked these same questions. "I want more, God," he prayed-and the answer was more than he was looking for. It was right there, hidden in plain sight among the syllables and syntax of a few words of advice from the apostle Peter. With time and experience, Buchanan learned to tease it out, this secret of more, and he wrote a book about it: Hidden in Plain Sight. The answer, he discovered, is an investigation of the cross. The answer is an excavation of the virtues. The answer urges us passionately to "make every effort." And, Buchanan tells us, the answer is worth it.

As functional as it is enjoyable.......2007-08-01
As a thinking Christ-follower, I struggle with the delicate balance between faith and works. I understand and appreciate God's grace, but He must be impressed by my efforts at piety...mustn't He?
With his usual deftness, Mark Buchanan presents a flowing exegesis of 2 Peter 1:1-9 that actually gives me hope in my aforementioned struggle. Buchanan is my favorite Christian author. He is a gifted wordsmith with a winsome delivery, yet his work presents a functional practicality and I reference it often. "Hidden in Plain Sight" is different than anything Buchanan has done before and he seems to be maturing as a writer. I especially enjoyed "The Petrine Diaries," behind-the-scenes glimpses into Peter's soul which added insight and context to his exhortation. When I finished the last page, I found myself looking forward to Mark Buchanan's next offering. I am certain it will be another cherished gift to the church.
Seven Ways / One Path to a Better Life.......2007-07-26
The somewhat obscured virtues 2 Peter sets-forth, if adopted and practiced faithfully, assure you of a better life with Jesus.
Amen and amen........2007-06-06
The writer Diane Ackerman once wrote that for too many people, "Life is something that happens to them while they wait for death." In HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT, Mark Buchanan explores seven ancient virtues that are found in the writings of the apostle Peter. In doing so, Buchanan invites us to pay attention to our lives, to really live, not just exist.
The life we've always wanted, Buchanan reminds us, is already here. It's not later, like after the kids are grown, or we've gone to counseling, or gotten a degree. It's now. We have everything we need. And there are seven virtues that, according to the Apostle Peter, if we add to our lives will make us more fruitful and productive. But first we have to search out these virtues and apply them.
What are the virtues? We need knowledge, the key to efficiency and productivity, and for it to be detoxified by goodness, which renders knowledge beneficial and not impressive. Add self-control; learn to pray. Persevere. Become Godly (Godliness, he notes, is "beautiful when it is authentic, and revolting when it's pretense.") Be kind. Love each other. Virtue's "groundwork" is faith, he writes. Its lifeblood is the Spirit.
As in his previous books, such as THE REST OF GOD and THINGS UNSEEN, Buchanan crafts lovely prose and careful word choices to get his message across. "...the Spirit is a wind. I'm learning to run with his gentle pummeling on my back, keeping me from growing weary. Some days, I spread my arms like wings and catch that wind beneath them, and for moments I fly. I fly."
Buchanan's vulnerability, often poignant personal stories, careful incorporation of scripture, illustrations and quotes from such diverse writers as Annie Dillard, G.K. Chesterton, and Pat Conroy enrich and illuminate his message. Every page is a challenge if we take it to heart. And we can't be proud of these virtues; rather, each virtue must come with an underlying humility.
In one interesting passage of the book, Buchanan wrestles with a concept that I've always struggled with. When we know that whenever we make a decision, the fallout of it might have negative consequences, how do we move forward? For example, we send care packages with toothbrushes in them to impoverished children in Africa, and the local toothbrush vendor loses his business. Or the church decides to invest in new choir robes, and the local food pantry can't feed 30 families because they are short on funds. It can make you crazy! Buchanan's advice, riffing on Martin Luther's "sin boldly," is helpful: "Don't anguish over every little thing. Do what needs doing and leave the outcome to God."
Something different: Buchanan integrates "The Petrine Diaries," 11 entries drawn from the life of Peter plus three short fictional stories that are tagged onto each section of the book, which he includes to "stir up your imagination." Although his nonfiction is stronger than his fiction, these short stories help flesh out the person of Peter on which the book revolves.
This is a message that will go straight to your heart if you let it, make you ask yourself questions about the way you are living, if you are risking enough, if you really want enough of God. I love Buchanan's hope for his book: "May it disrupt us, turn us upside down in order to live right-side up.... May it help us live with such holy vigor that when we're gone, our epitaph will be, "They really lived." May we say, "God, I want more of you." Amen and amen.

4 1/2 Stars...Deceptively Light.......2007-05-28
With his fifth book, Buchanan proves to be one of the best Christian authors you've never heard of. He writes with humor and grace. He makes a lofty promise in "Hidden in Plain Sight," offering "the secret of more." More what? More rules to Christian living?
Buchanan states up front that this book is about practicing virtue. However, he quickly sidesteps Victorian stereotypes and invites us to explore dark, haunting, beautiful, and life-changing truths contained in a few verses from II Peter. He leads us through these precepts, connecting the dots of virtue, building one upon the other, until we have a clear picture of what it means to have godly love. Along the way, Buchanan gives us insights into this outspoken disciple. Peter is more human than we remember--and more godly than we might assume. Peter shows us an example of what to do and what not to do.
Buchanan uses this example to great effect. He offers hope for those who feel discouraged in their Christian progress, as well as correction for those who have lost their focus, or become spiritual workaholics. He raises questions. He deals honestly with life's difficulties. In a deceptively light 200 pages, he gives meaty bites of practical theology, bites that require thorough chewing to produce the most efficient nourishment. Don't rush through these pages. Mull them over. Enjoy each savory word picture. These concepts are ones to live by.
Hidden In Plain Sight.......2007-04-05
Mark Buchanan is a unique writer. He writes in a style that is "out of the box" thinking. He keeps me off balance in a good way. As a result I find myself actively engaged with the message he is seeking to convey.
Book Description
Fairies are very real and loving beings who want to help us live joyful, prosperous, and healthy lives. In this enlightening book,
Doreen Virtue clearly explains who the fairies are, how they’re helping us, and ways to connect with their magical energy.
True stories from people who’ve encountered fairies and benefited from their assistance illustrate Doreen’s teachings. You’ll learn how fairies aid people in finding lost objects, heal themselves and their pets, make gardens grow miraculously fast, and help clean the environment. You’ll also see photos of a real fairy handprint, and other visual evidence that demonstrates that fairies are very real indeed.

Cutesy, superficial glitz.......2007-09-04
Doreen Virtue's books on Divine Guidance and Earth Angels impressed me as being clear and "on the money," so I was hoping this book would cut through the cutesy stereotype and give a sound understanding of the fairies and nature spirits.
Unfortunately this is one of the most superficial treatments of fairies that I have encountered. Aside from several illumining fairy stories sent to the author by fans, the book offers nothing but rosy stereotypes and half-baked platitudes.
According to Ms. Virtue the main message of the fairy race is that "life is fun" and "you can magically manifest everything you need."
The way to attract fairies is to put "candy," "shiny objects" and "doll house furniture" in your yard. And if you want to empower fairies to save the earth repeat: "I do believe in fairies!"
If you use non-toxic cleaning products, the fairies will love you and grant you favors; if not they will play tricks on you. Despite their acute awareness of our habits, the author suggests you warn the fairies every time you walk on the grass.
Almost every chapter of the book exhorts us to "practice recycling," "donate to environmental groups," and "be kind to the environment" yet the book is printed on glossy, non-recycled paper.
Almost half of the book consists of full-page photos (produced by a marketing professional) of scantily-clad women in medieval costume languishing in forest scenes. None of the images depict deeply wise beings actively serving humanity and the earth. There is one alleged photo of the "little people" which is obviously a silhouette created by the eraser tool of a paint program.
This book appears to be little more than a hastily conceived marketing venture, so I decided to do some research.
On googling Doreen Virtue, I found that a number of her former students assert that her training programs in healing and counseling are so superficial as to be dangerous, and her emphasis is far too heavy on marketing (see for example the Cult Education Forum or Skeptico blogsites). Ms. Virtue is a New Age icon, but that does not mean readers should just buy into the rosy image and suspend critical thinking.
If you want a serious, thoughtful book on fairies that portrays their deep wisdom and dignity, I would recommend The Sidhe by John Matthews.
I Believe.......2007-07-13
Very insightful and full of information about the fairies. At times I was taken back to childhood and that innocent happiness that was lost for so long. I feel it coming back now. Thank You Doreen and Thanks to my Fairy friends
Inspirations on connecting with the fairy folk.......2007-07-07
I have always been a fan of Doreen Virtue, and find her books to be uplifting and inspiring. This book, however, brought with it mixed feelings.
It's a very attractive book, filled with simply stunning illustrations from artist Howard David Johnson (www.howarddavidjohnson.com). It's very short (only 130 pages) and is a very quick and enjoyable read. It has ten chapters and includes information on who the fairies are, houses, careers, and other gifts from the fairies, healing with the fairies, the fairies and animals, gardening and the fairies, children and the fairies, the fairies and school, the spirit of nature, flower fairies and other elementals and connecting with the fairies.
Each chapter includes personal stories from the author, or experiences that others have had with the fairies. Doreen gives very simple explanations and examples of what everyone can do to inspire a closer relationship with the fairies.
This book is perfect for those wishing to learn how to connect with the fairy folk, and it's even suitable for children (as my eight year old and ten year old will attest). It's sweet, beautiful and charming, and should inspire just about anyone to want to bring the fairies into their home and garden.
The only thing that bothered me about the book were a couple of inaccuracies in her folklore that a little research could have prevented. First off she states that the selkie is a mermaid that is a seal while in the ocean and a woman while on the land. I can't find any reference for this? A selkie is a seal (not a mermaid disguised as a seal) who can shed it's skin and assume human form while on land.
She then states that the goddess Dana turned the Tuatha de Danann into leprechauns so they could remain in Ireland (they were being invaded by the Milesans). I also find no reference for this. The Tuatha de Danann are supernatural beings who have remained so, retaining both their identity and appearance despite the fact that the Milesans did indeed win Ireland.
At another point in the book she refers to the rune stones as being gifts from the tree spirits to the druids. I have to wonder if she has the runes mixed up with the ogham (they do both happen to be alphabets along with divination systems). The Celtic Tree Ogham is indeed connected to the spirits of the trees (hence the name "tree ogham"), whereas the runes were said to have been brought to humanity by the Norse god Odin. And where the runes do have some reference to trees, they don't have the strong connection that the ogham does.
Of course those are just minor points if you are looking at this book as strictly an inspirational piece, and most people would probably never notice (or care) about the minor inaccuracies. Nowhere does the author state that this is a scholarly work, and indeed, it's not meant to be so.
As a book designed to promote an interest in connecting to the fairies (and thus the environment) I definitely give it two thumbs up.
Amazing book!.......2007-07-02
I read this book in one day. It completely opened my mind to the fairy world (which i must admit I was a skeptic). It explained a lot about the fairies and how they can help you. After putting some of Doreen's advice to work, I must say, I am a believer now! It's an informative book that is easy to read and has fabulous pictures. I highly recommend this book.
If You Want To Learn About Real Fairies This Is Where To Start.......2007-06-09
As an avid reader of Ms. Virtue's other books, I was very happy to have another book about the Nature Angels/Fairies. If you have her book Healing With The Fairies and/or are interested about learning about the Fairies, this is a must-have!

For readers who seek a straightforward guidebook on learning about the chakra system and how to keep it healthy, this is an excellent resource. Virtue, who is a bestselling author (Messages From Your Angels, Healing With the Angels) and clairvoyant doctor of psychology, identifies the placements and functions of these "energy centers" in the body. She then teaches readers how to keep these chakras clear and clean, leading to greater health and energy.
The chakras themselves are a beautiful progression of shifting colors, starting with the red root chakra at the base of the spine and moving up the body, shade-by-shade, and ending with the royal purple "crown" chakra at the top of the head. Each chakra interacts with a person's issues and concerns in the world. For instance, the root chakra relates to basic survival, such as money, shelter, and material needs, according to Virtue. If a person feels stable in this arena, the "root chakra looks like a brilliant ruby held under a spotlight," she explains. However, if people feel fearful about money or become overly obsessed with their career or possessions, this chakra will be come "dirty" and have a muddy, dark red color.
Virtue offers an extensive assortment of original, guided meditations that are effective in cleaning and clearing all the chakras. The information is well organized and clearly presented with a corresponding CD to help readers integrate the meditations into daily life. She also touches upon other cleaning tools, such as what foods and crystals support the chakra system. Advanced energy workers may find this material basic, but beginners should find it an outstanding primer. --Gail Hudson

Ok For Very Basic Intro.......2007-10-07
Having listened to this CD I was not impressed at all. Doreens voice is very monotone and the sound track just ok. I became uneasy listening to this meditation after one listen.
May I strongly suggest Colette Baron Reids CD "Journey Through The Chakras".
I have found no chakra CD even remotely as superb.
Colettes voice is angelic and after many weeks of listening I still find her refreshing. The sound track is heavenly and deeply moving.
Her website has many meditations free for listening.
You will NOT be disappointed.
I guarantee that you will be fulfilled.

Chakra Clearing - helpful for meditating .......2007-05-13
Chakra Clearing was recommended to me to help balance my chakras. I knew I needed to meditate more and was told this CD and book would help. It was more amazing than I expected. It put me in a frame of mind to just let all negative thoughts and feelings melt away. The affirmations are powerful and gave me a sense of total well-being.
Great for beginners, not for advanced.......2007-03-07
Before purchasing this book, I knew absolutely nothing about chakras, yet I had heard about them and wanted to learn about them at a very basic level to start with. Having heard of this book, I read other reviews on Amazon, but still had mixed feelings.
So, later on that day, I went to a bookstore and looked at several different books about chakras. Definitely, there were many that were much more in depth than this one, but even though they were basic in a sense, they were still too advanced for what I was looking for. So, I bought the little paperback version of this book without the CD, and to my delight, it was exactly what I was looking for.
This book covers anything basic that you would need to know about chakras. The small book also helps if you do not have a great amount of time to read a longer book but would like to learn about chakras.
Like I said before, this book is very small and basic, so if you are anything much more than a beginner in this field, I would not invest in this book as you'll need something that goes a bit more in depth (sorry, I don't have any specific recommendations). I can certainly see how those who are advanced would see this book as being worth fewer stars than a beginner would.
As for beginners like me, this book was great and has opened my interest to this subject. Once summer rolls around, I'll most likely pick up a longer book on the subject.
It works but it has some strange welcome sideffects.......2007-01-11
If I remember correctly it was about 4 years ago when I found a book about Doreen Virtue in a bookstore that brings only English books. After I read that book I ordered her tape Chakra Clearing. And as the tape advised I started using it morning and night before going to bed. It was unsual for me to stay on the same routine for such a long period of time as I did for that, I kept doing this for about 21 days more or less. I should say also that a few months earlier I had begun attending a group that once a month met to go through meditation to the 5th dimension to the Archangels and Angels, as Mrs Maria Zavou the lady that taught these trips said. So after doing this routine with Doreen's tape and some of the time while doing it, I fell asleep. But it seems that this worked
despite that. And one day I felt that my third eye had opened I was starting to see there were we had been going with Maria Zavou (her site is www.angels.gr) and I saw some very strange and interesting things. And my life was different after that. I had more questions than ever and since then I have done a lot of searching. Of course I was enthusiastic about Doreen Virtue's tape I lent it to other people in my group and expecting the same to happen to them. But they all told me they didn't have any results, what I found after asking them, was that no one had tried as I had tried to do it for such a long period of time...... not even a week and it all started from the narrowminded perception that this could not possibly happen to them. I was different and that is why it happened to me they didn't believe in their selves and they limited themselves. So later when the book with the dvd came I bought it again in order to have the book and the dvd together. And another thing when I tried to talk to them about Doreen Virtue and her books they said they found them very simple but the truth that they are simple but they work.
