Book Description
When Danny Gregory's life was turned upside down by tragedy, he learned to cope by teaching himself to draw. The result was a complete transformation of his life, his priorities, his career, and the way he saw the world. In handwritten chapters full of his lush watercolor illustrations, Danny now offers readers a program for reconnecting to their own creative energies, using drawing as an example. He gently instructs us in the art of allowing ourselves to fail, giving up the expectation of perfection and opening our eyes to the beauty around us. The result is the permission to express ourselves fully and take part in the creative process without fear. Artist or not, readers of all stripes will find inspiration in this unique and beautiful book.

amazing.......2007-10-09
I love love LOVE this book. I have been art jouraling for about 6 years now and I've had a block for a while now. This book did the trick. Lots of good ideas. Also this book got here so fast I didn't even know what it was at first:) good stuff.
Great book for Drawing Inspiration.......2007-08-20
This was a good, inspiring book about drawing and the power it can have in your life. Mr. Gregory worked in advertising for many years and finally gave it up to become an artist, and began keeping sketchbooks as a way to grow. He gives lots and lots of examples and tips on what you can do yourself to enhance your creativity and draw more. His drawings are beautiful and for the most part his prose is very upbeat and made me want to get out there and draw.
I do have one quibble, though, and that's a tiny hint of snobbery in some of his text. For the most part he'll say "do your own thing" or "whatever feels right for you", which I think is the proper way to approach making artwork, but then he'll come out with something like, "only draw in ink" like there's something wrong with pencil. And "you have to go to New York because that's where it's at" which is utter nonsense for many people. This is the kind of thing that makes one think they have to do something a certain way, but to me making art is so personal that I think one should use whatever technique or style they wish.
That being said, I would definitely recommend this book for a good kick in the butt to get out there and get drawing!
Making drawing accessible.......2007-07-07
This is my favorite book as an introduction to illuminated journals. I tried books on "visual" or "creative" journaling, but for me, I just can't connect with abstract blocks of color and shape as symbols of specific insights or emotions. I'm a writer, a words person, but sometimes words just aren't enough for me for capturing a moment. So I looked at other books on illuminated journals, but they're so beautifully rendered by talented and experienced artists that they were too intimidating for me.
Then I found this book. Danny Gregory is a little overlong at the start when he talks about the value of creativity in general. (If you've picked up the book at all, you probably don't need that much persuading.) But once you pick up a pen, he really gets going. He covers the basics of drawing, and I love his analogy linking learning to draw with learning to drive. I also like that he asks you to dare to make mistakes by using a pen instead of a pencil. He doesn't even have you use an actual "journal" at first so you can comfortable with drawing.
I also like that he keeps the book simple throughout. A lot of these types of books have you off to the art supply store with a *list* within the first 2 or 3 chapters. Here, all you'll ever need is a black pen, and maybe some color pens or thicker pens later.
I was surprised to learn that as drawing goes, I'm not all that bad, and I'm certainly good enough for my journals.
A Review from Texas.......2007-06-28
I LOVE this book. I have dabbled at drawing but found it more work than pleasure. When I started reading Creative License I realized that it could be fun and relaxing. "Don't erase your mistakes" was a very liberating statement to me. Now I can't wait to see something that begs me to get my pen and paper out and DRAW!
The Creative License.......2007-06-02
Thoroghly enjoyed it. Will start doing the exercises tomorrow. Simple and effective for the busy schedule.

David Icke is telling the truth........2007-09-11
the reason it sounds so fantastic is that the average person does not have the information. They live in a fog of network television and canned news media - all of which are owned & controlled by the ones behind the so-called 'conspiracy'.
Do the research. It's no story - it's real.
Best book I've ever read.......2007-09-11
The conclusions in this book about the nature of reality and how it's all an illusion have changed my life for the best. Icke is very thorough and well documented in trying to support his claims. I couldn't put the book down. Five stars.
Balony.......2006-11-25
Hehe, O.K. I bought the book -- it's not the first time I've thrown away money and won't be the last. After skimming through it and reading this guy's life story, which includes "voices" psychics, and god-knows what else, I can say that I refuse to waste my valuable time reading this clap-trap. Let me suggest that everyone thinking about buying this book, read THIS book first you will be doing yourself a lifelong favor.
IS DAVID ICKE STARTING TO MAKE SENSE?.......2006-09-18
It's easy to simply reject someone who says the world is run by manipulative reptilians posing as world leaders; that George Bush, Tony Blair, the British monarch, and many other prominent people are blood-drinking child-abusers who engage in secret rituals unknown to the rest of us. Despite David Icke's seemingly outrageous claims, I found some logic as well as interesting and possibly credible theories in Tales From the Time Loop. In contast to his earlier books, he has shifted his beliefs in a more positive direction. It sounds a lot like he is embracing spirituality and the immortality of the soul. He accepts the existence of the astral world, a place or state with many levels occupied by beings with numerous agendas and understandings of the universe. But he rejects reincarnation as separate lifetimes ("there is no time") or that life in a human body is a journey toward perfection. In Icke's version of reality, there is no karma, no need to make up for evil deeds or mistakes. Everything is an illusion. What is missing in his framework, in my opinion, is purpose. Why does reality exist? Why are we here playing these games?
What about the evil reptilians? Why are they here and what do they want? Icke finally gives us a reason the reptilians must sacrifice humans and drink blood. He says they have a problem remaining in this dimension and they need human DNA to keep from shifting back to their own dimension. They sometimes do shapeshift into reptiles, and he quotes numerous witnesses who have seen them shift. Icke takes pokes at the frenzy of interest in the bloodline of Jesus (theories that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had children). He says the so-called Jesus bloodline is just part of the reptilian bloodline. In a previous book, he claimed there was no historical Jesus, so I don't know what to make of this new belittling of the Jesus bloodline.
But the repitilians seem to fade in importance behind his major thesis, that we are all participating in a Time Loop in which history keeps repeating itself. Everything in the Time Loop (our apparent universe as well as the astral world) vibrates. Only Oneness does not vibrate. David found a parallel to this idea in the movie, The Matrix, which obviously impressed him much more than it impressed me. I found the Matrix movies silly stories thinly built around special effects. Despite his admiration for matrix-buster Neo, Icke criticizes the media for being purveyors of falsehood that serve the Illuminati agenda.
Speaking of history, I do not think David Icke is anti-semitic as some of his critics charge. He is absolutely correct in defending anyone's right to express their point of view, even if it is repugnant and can be proven wrong. David is not a holocaust-denyer, but he does think people have a right to deny the holocaust. If we had an intelligent, educated populace, there would be few takers for theories like "there was no holocaust" that are so contrary to tons of evidence. He also explores an interesting idea about the origin of today's Jewish population. There is some evidence that the Ashkenazi Jews (those who come from Europe) were at least in part related to a non-semitic people called the Khazars who converted to Judaism in 740 AD. They occupied territory that is mostly in modern-day Turkey. The significance of this (according to Icke) is that it refutes the idea that present-day Israel was an ancestral home to its current Jewish inhabitants.
But as the book progresses, Icke sounds more like many New Agers in proclaiming that human consciousness will shift into higher gear and can defeat the Illuminati. He gained some new insights, he says, while taking a psychoactive drug, ayahuasca, in Brazil. This was his first foray into mind-altering drugs and he tells us he received a great deal of information from a voice in his head. I believe him (this is not an uncommon experience) but I recognize that we do not know the origin of these voices. They may originate within ourselves, or they may come from spiritual entities outside ourselves. In either case, we cannot be sure what they tell us contains any actual truth.
Why bother reading Tales From the Time Loop or any of David Icke's books? I don't know if there are any actual Illuminati plotting to take over the world, but I do know the world is full of evil, with its endless wars, unrelenting poverty and destructive competition for precious natural resources. Icke's critics can be pretty hard on him, but I think his message deserves a hearing. I want to live in a world where David Icke can say and write what he believes and where I am free to say and write what I think of what he believes.
No room left for cowards..........2006-09-07
This is a great and challenging book, not for the faint of heart. David Icke presents a vision of the world which is radically different from the one which we are spoonfed from cradle to grave. Think of the courage it takes to get up on the world stage and bring forth this kind of information. People who pan Icke (and others in the truth movement) are nothing more than staid cowards, unwilling to integrate and adapt...worst of all, unwilling to listen and think these things through. Bottom line: read this book and pass it on to friends; time is running short and our freedoms are eroding before our eyes. It's time to wake up and rise to our true and magnificent human potential...and Icke is here to help on us our way.

Truly life changing....if you are ready........2007-09-17
This book will remain on my permanent bookshelf...it is a treasure. Took me 1 month to finish as I completed nearly all of the exercises that are placed throughout the book. Even as I worked through the book I always looked forward to the next chapter...which is rare for me. I would strongly recommend this book if you are looking for guidance to truly learn about yourself and WHY you do those things that you do. If you are looking for a list of quick organizing tips then this is not the book for you.
Holistic approach to organization.......2007-01-04
Drawing on the four areas of development (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual), the author focuses on WHY people are unorganized. The book is not as focused on practical steps to become organized, but does give an excellent overview on the path towards understanding. If you want a more specific, skills-based approach, this isn't the book for you. On the other hand, if you want to learn why you're not organized (in ANY area of your life, not just housework!), then this is a good tool.
Wow!!!!.......2006-07-09
This is the *best* organization book I have ever came across. I litterately felt like I was sitting in a shrinks office (and it was much cheaper too!). I had so many "ah ha!" moments reading this book and I couldn't put it down. This is one that I will keep on my shelf forever!
Great...It was like she was talking directly to me........2006-06-06
The author talked from experience, expresses herself beautifully, provides holistic help, great resources in the appendix. I think it will change my life.
I thought I was organized until I read this book.......2006-01-30
The author knew all of my weaknesses in organizing my life and she had all the answers on how to correct them. This book will save me two hours a day for the rest of my life. You really feel like you accomplished something after you start practicing these techniques.

Inspiring, Wise, and Creative.......2007-07-10
It is obvious that the author lives on positive energy. This text motivated and inspired me every time I flipped the page. I think it was well structured, and the exercises were well-conceived; they really helped me internalize the information.
Essentially, this book is about how you can have a second career, or even a third. It also explains why you would want to, it empowers you to believe you can, and provides a few kicks in the pants for those of us who need it.
Stephan Pollan created a second act in his own life before writing this book. He is Michael J. Fox's father-in-law, so he has observed Fox's second act blossom. And he also went out looking for other examples of people who have successfully pulled off a second career. Therefore, this is not a fluffy book pulled out of the author's imagination...or pulled out of anywhere else. This is a practical and inspiring guide based on the experiences of many.
Opening Closed Doors.......2006-07-28
There are many books on life planning. There are many books on reinventing a life. I keep coming back to this one as a gold standard among the many instruction manuals out there. It's simple. It's well-written. The examples are clear. There are no gimmicks. The authors encourage introspection and self-reflection without making this seem scary and they offer simple guidance in indentifying and obercoming obstacles. This is one of a handful of books that I've used myself and highly recommend to my coaching clients.
In Transition? Thinking About Quitting? or Retiring?.......2006-06-02
Better read this book. Whether you are leaving a job to go to another one or thinking about hanging it all up, you ought to spend $10 and get this book.
I like a book where the author has actually had "fate" push him into the abyss and he had to figure out how to climb out of the darkness. This author lost his a good job thru no fault of his own, had a bout with TB (and was happy because it wasn't lung cancer), had no savings (alright how he had no savings is beyond me - but I am sure Mr. Pollan covers this in another book and will keep you from making the same error)and had to start all over. He tells you how he started all over, where he "wanted to go" and where he eventually wound up.
The author is sincere, honest, humble and writes like a person talks (which is always a good thing because it makes you feel he is sitting right next to you).
If you lost your job and are not sure what you want to do - pick up this book. The book provides ideas and I think more importantly a roadmap to uncover or discover what you want to do now that you're all grown up. BUT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT, is the book gives hope, a sense that there is a future and that things will and can get better - as soon as you decide to.
Another good book is some of Brian Tracy's books especially his two books Maximum Achievement and Change Your Thinking and You Can Change YOur LIfe. These two books are similar to what Mr Pollan discusses around the way you need to think, and how you can control your destiny.
My best of luck to you in your search for happiness and peace and success!
Superficial, irrelevant, and irritating.......2006-03-24
Let's see - I graduate from law school at age twenty, work as an attorney, a real estate developer, venture capitalist, and a banker over a span of about thirty years. Then I get sick and am out of work. When I am ready to return to work, I, through a large network of past contacts, just happen to get a job teaching college courses, which leads to writing books and appearing on national TV shows, and which, in turn, leads to forming consulting businesses including life coaching. And, of course, my advanced degreed wife takes a well-paying job at a magazine as a cushion. Then I hold myself up as an example of how the typical person can launch a second career and put it all in a book, SECOND ACTS. So the reader learns early on that the author cannot distinguish the irrelevant from the situation of most attempting to make a career change. Furthermore, it is an irony, which the author little sees, that he did not depend on the exercises that he recommends to others in finding a second career. He actually stumbled into most of what he calls a second career. Is that the real message: get lucky.
Of course, what would a self-help book be if it didn't have any number of exercises that must be followed to find a second career. First of all, one is to write about their dream: passions, strengths and weaknesses, interests, needs, and the specific dream. And then there are the typical obstacles of which one must be cognizant: age, money, duration, consent, location, physical condition, education and training, timing, esteem, fear of failure, fear of success, and fatalism. There is a subtle message here that failure to launch a second career may be due to your failure to overcome these obstacles - like they are not really obstacles after all.
This is the wrong genre to look for a realistic description and assessment of the world of work and training and education for it. If employees were actually empowered and if students could get educated and trained without tremendous amounts of extraneous hoop-jumping, perhaps all of these books about how to deal with work and workplace unhappiness would not be necessary. Issues such as obsolescence and downsizing could be dealt with realistically taking into account the interests of all parties. Changing the content of one's current job would be possible.
Chances are those who are doing what they absolutely love: painters, writers, wood carvers, etc aren't reading this book. For those who have struggled in the world of work, the typical self-help platitudes are here. Their help is doubtful. The author can hardly change workplace realities. When careers or jobs are changed, there is a very real possibility of experiencing the same limitations as before, just in another guise.
Adding to the irrelevancy of the book - the author insists on adding numerous mini-biographies of celebrities which have absolutely nothing to do with finding a second career as most would understand the concept. Furthermore, those writing a serious book on general employment need to keep their personal lives out of it. If one wanted to read memoirs, one can find plenty.
Go Ahead, You Can Do It!.......2005-10-10
Pollan taps into an almost universal wish -- to be doing something else for a living. His strength here, as in his previous books, is to be a cheerleader. Everyone wants to be told, "go ahead, you can do it," and Pollan tells us just that.
Since he defines Second Acts so broadly (a couple who decide to buy a second home in the country, for instance), nearly everyone can be considered a candidate for a Second Act. He outlines the steps you should take before taking the leap. Decide just what it is you want and don't want, determine what financial and family support you will need, etc. By making an orderly exercise out of it, it seems more attainable.
Pollan is good at organizing us and putting a positive spin on doing something that is risky and frightening for most of us. I have to disagree with him on one point, and that is asking family members for money. He says that your family wants you to be happy, and if they were planning on leaving you money in their will, for instance, you should tell them you need it now. Or, if you don't have willing and wealthy grandparents, ask siblings or parents for a loan. This sounds like a mistake to me, but maybe Pollan knows better. It would also be nice to have a summary of the steps at the end of the book.
If you are thinking of a Second Act (and who isn't), you could probably figure out Pollan's steps on your own, but it's nice to have them organized for you with a friendly mentor cheering you on.

Delaney Shaw plans to get in and out of her hometown in the time it takes to attend her stepfather Henry's funeral, read the will, and refill the tank of her Miata. Even the pleas of her mother and the tension of an unfinished fling with Henry's bastard son, Nick Allegrezza, can't keep her in Truly, Idaho. But Henry had other plans in mind: Nick and Delaney's inheritance is contingent on her staying in Truly for a year, and him having no "sexual relationship" with Delaney. What's a girl to do? Delaney digs in, starts up a hair salon and prepares to grit her teeth for as long as it takes.
Small-town life is everything that Delaney fears it to be: high school rivalries and old rumors about Delaney and Nick resurrect themselves with predictable immediacy. Gossip nears the truth as the sexual sparks fly between Nick and Delaney. Nick's reputation as a ladies man hasn't changed, either, and Delaney reminds herself that he can love her and leave her just as brutally as he did 10 years ago. But when the two find themselves in close proximity, all their best intentions fly out the window and intense passion consumes them.
Truly Madly Yours has the same originality and sauciness that made Rachel Gibson's first work, Simply Irresistible, popular with readers. While each page brings a new take on the familiar "black sheep, old flame" plot, the main characters are at times a bit unappealing. Delaney's unqualified disgust for Truly becomes a tired mantra and no amount of biker jackets and muttered "wild things" can neutralize Nick's anachronistic womanizing. Gibson wisely focuses her attention on clever dialogue and original situations, and the overall result is a delightful and completely entertaining read. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

simply the best.......2007-08-23
This is my favoite RG book. Delaney & Nick are by far my favorite hero and heroine. I read Tangled Up in You just to see if they were in it.
Almost a five star.......2007-08-10
I really liked this book. It had it's good and bad points. Delaney returns to town after 10 years for her stepfather's funeral. She left at 18 after being caught with bad boy Nick, her stepdad's illegitimate son. When she went away to college she finally got a chance to live her life and make her own mistakes without her overbearing, controlling parents interferring. She went wild and dropped out of college and lived a vagabond life moving from town to town looking for the perfect place and job. She returns to Truly, Idaho for her stepfather's funeral and some really crazy stipulations in his will if she wants to inherit.
I liked the heroine Delaney. She was funny and down to earth even though I wished she would have put her mother in her place. Now Nick I loved and hated. He could be a real jerk one minute and really sweet the next. The main problem I had with him is that after being with Delaney it is alluded to that he is still with other women. I understood him still running around with women before they got together but afterward he refused to committ to just Delaney and references were made that he spent time with another woman. End the end I thought his carousing ways should have been addressed. He admits he could never be with just one woman nor would he want to. So while I love books with alpha male characters who are finally tamed, I just didn't see that happening with Nick. But overall this is a great book.
Easy Fun Read........2007-07-11
This book was easy to read and had a cute story. Yes, it is predictable and all that fun stuff but I enjoyed it and I would recommend it to a friend!
One of her best.......2007-06-27
I have read every Rachel Gibson book published and loved them all. That said this is absolutly one of her best. It was a little predictable but the characters were well developed and funny and the plot did have a couple twists. Overall it was a pageturner. Read it!!!
bit much.......2007-03-07
rachel gibson's leading men tend to be a bit too "bad boy" for me. she is a wonderful writer though. sex scenes are a bit too much for me, but if you like that than this is your book!

I felt as if I was reading my heart.......2006-11-07
Jerry Cook puts into words my hearts cry!
He reminds me to hope and dream of what the Body of Christ could be.
I love this book so intensely it's looking rather worn.
After reading it over and over myself, I bought copies for my board and staff.
I even preached a sermon series inspired from its pages and encouraged my entire church to purchase and devour it!
If the people of God knew how to really love, accept and forgive, we would truly be Jesus with skin on.
PS...thank you Jerry Cook and Stanley C. Baldwin for letting the Holy Spirit use you to positively change THE church...
The ministry of the Church Jesus gave His life for.......2006-11-04
This book will ignite passion in you and equip you to do the work of the ministry. It's message expresses the heart and mind of our Heavenly Father and His desire and purposes for the church in the earth today. The church should be an active force in the world providing a place for the borken hearted to be healed and the captives to be set free.
An outstanding book for hungry Christians.......2005-07-21
I became familiar with this book back in the late 70's. This book has much to say to Christians who want to be actively and accurately involve in their Church and their faith. Love, Acceptance and Forgiveness lives up to its sub-title very well: Equipping the church to be truly Christian in a non-Christian world.
Practical Christianity.......2004-01-13
I sat down with this book and did not get up till I finished it. That is not amazing due to the few pages there are. The amazing part is how my faith, my worldview and my Chrisitanity was so radically changed by such a small book.
The Bible is the original text while this book if the Cliff Notes in applying the real Christianity.
I now see Jesus in the eyes of the homeless; the prisoner; the "pain in the neck" people and therefore my christian expression has changed.
Do Not read this book if you do not want to change your actions toward people.
Why I keep reading this book.......2002-10-01
Love, Acceptance, and Forgiveness changed the way I view church, ministry, and Christians as a whole. As a result of first reading this book ten years ago, and rereading it every year, I have discovered that people need unconditional love simply because they are humans.
The key concept is simply that people need to be loved and deserved to be loved because they were created in the image of God.
Acceptance should have nothing to do with stature or position, but simply with the fact that we are all humans.
Forgiveness should flow freely without strings attached because we can all receive that same gift.
I would encourage all people to read this book, embrace the concepts, and allow it to change the way you opperate as a person. In the simplest terms, in the most concise way to put it, it will challenge you to examine the way you view humanity.

Too much nitty gritty.......2005-03-31
They crammed as much as they could into this microscopic book. This book is fine if you like reading font the size of a grain of sand. The book is poorly organized, and really doesn't have that much useful info for a 3rd year starting clerkships. I would suggest First Aid for Clerkships if you really want to get a feel for things before starting 3rd year. You have enough crap to carry around in your white coat in your 3rd year and I can guarantee that this book will not be a priority for fitting into that white coat. This book really does not tell anything a 2nd year PA student or 3rd year medical student doesn't already know. Don't waste your time on this one. Tarascons other books; Primary Care, ER, and the Pharmacopia are descent toilet reading though.
Must-read before starting your clinical clerkships!.......2003-02-21
Most Junior Medical Students (JMS's) feel intimidated when they begin their clinical year of medical school. You wanna learn how to cope up with this stress? Then buy this pocketbook !
Even though I bought it from Dalhousie University (Halifax) at the end of my junior clinical year, yet it was of great help to me later.
This pocketbook explores the world of the hospital, the role of each member, and how things are done in terms of writing notes, ordering tests, and performing procedures.
In Chapter 1, it introduces the JMS's to how a hospital works: (Outpatient vs. inpatient care, community vs. teaching hospitals, Private & staff patients, Nursing units & specialty services, Physician teams, Getting admitted to the hospital, Night calls, Ward routines from a patient's perspective).
Then the author talks in Chapter 2 about how to do stuff including reviewing a chart, writing orders, medications and prescriptions.
Chapter 3 teaches how to write notes (admission notes, internal medicine daily progress notes, discharge notes, notes for the Surgical care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Neurology and Psychiatry).
Chapter 4 focuses on procedures, in terms of preparation, introduction to phlebotomy & IV placement, performing venipuncture, taking blood culture, arterial blood gases, ECG, lumbar puncture, NG tube & Dobhoff placement, placing a urinary catheter, and local anesthesia.
Chapter 5 deals with bedside tests including urinalysis and Gram stain.
Finally Chapter 6 teaches JMS's how to organize their data and schedule, and to make a good presentation.
This pocketbook comes in 124 pages, published by Tarascon Press, in its 6th edition, 2001.
The only drawback I found is that chapter 3 is entirely duplicated twice, at least in my copy. Other than that, I strongly recommend this pocketbook for med students before commencing their clinical clerkships.
I don't know how I could have survived my clerkships without.......2001-07-21
This book absolutely made hospital life clear to me in those terrifying first weeks of both my medical and my surgical clerkships. I think every single medical student should buy this book this second!
Has broad insights as well as nitty-gritty details.......2000-11-14
I have had the distinct pleasure of working with the author during medical school at Case Western Reserve University. He is an exceptional person--able to see the big picture as well as the small details. I read and re-read his book (which at that time was not really a book, but more of a packet)before each clerkship and found it to be very reassuring and insightful. I believe he wrote it just after he finished his third year--so it is right on-target for the intended audience.
On a general note, there really is not enough guidance for medical students as they struggle through the clinical years, but this book really does help. Be thankful that Dr. Lederman took the time to write it and publish it.

You will keep returning to this step-by-step guide..........2007-09-19
I purchased this entertaining and well-written book a couple of years ago. It has served as a step-by-step guide as I have made the transition from the traditional classroom to online learning.
From basic learning principals and definitions to specific "how to" examples and checklists, this book has it all and delivers it with a sense of humor that will have you chuckling aloud and keep you engaged, interested, and wanting to learn more. I continue to use this book as a resource, returning to it again and again, whether in need of a reminder or looking for inspiration to help me move forward.
If you are considering making the journey to online learning, this book will provide the light to help you along your way.
A good rosetta stone for HR/training and web-geeks........2004-07-26
In 150 pages, the authors lay out the key information both HR/training practitioners and web-geeks need to work together successfully.
Written for the non-technical HR practitioner who needs to understand both the training concepts and the technology choices she will be faced with, this book also provides a technical reader (me) with the language and central concepts used by training professionals to develop their courses.
I could see this text being used as the starting point for an project team comprised of HR professionals, trainers, and web designers to build on -- each member of the team required to read it to establish a common framework and language. A few hours spent reading this up front would save countless hours of 'churn' later on in the project.
E-learning for Dummies?.......2004-06-22
The audience for this book is the person who wants to take their first step into traditional online learning. And by traditional, I mean self-contained courses and the management systems that support them (as opposed to deeper simulations or integration with knowledge management or ERP or CRM systems, etc., etc.,) For these people, the tone, the content, and the sympathy are dead on. Before going to a conference, or reading any deeper books, or subscribing to any of the current magazines, or meeting with your boss or advisor, this should be required reading.
Not Just for Beginners.......2004-06-01
Like many instructional design professionals, I struggle to stay abreast of the lighting-fast developments in online learning. Replacing the comfortable and relatively stable vocabularies and design considerations of yesteryear are rapidly evolving media, terms, technologies, and standards.
Both veterans and novices alike may now know a great deal about some things and very little about others. We need resources that can help us fill the gaps in our understanding and enable us to speak intelligently to our clients, colleagues, and employers. We also need simplified ways of explaining these topics to our audiences.
Patti and Amy have provided just such a resource. By peeling away the jargon and complexity in an even-handed and measured way, they have clarified many mind-numbing subjects. Along the way, they have taken care to point out universal considerations, such as the importance of designing for usability and building training around real-world challenges. They have also provided excellent checklists to use when considering the acquisition of expensive technologies, such as learning management and content management systems. These tools alone can help organizations avoid costly and frustrating blunders.
Patti and Amy have successfully blended sensible guidance; classic learning theories; online learning terms, definitions, and applications; and many excellent resources into a "must read" book and companion Web site. Readers will hardly realize the plane has left the ground by the time they touch down gently but firmly at the end of a smooth and delightful journey.
Current, fun, and accurate.......2004-05-25
Very few of us have the time or the patience to read a non-fiction book front to back. We want current information, solutions to the problems we are experiencing today, and answers to questions we can not answer ourselves. We want to find these golden nuggets of information quickly and easily and, we do not want a lot of theoretical or academic fluff.
"Making Sense of Online Learning" meets those requirements. The Shank and Sitze book and companion website are perfect "just-in-time" resources for anyone involved in online learning. Whatever your level of experience and expertise with online learning, I am sure you will find lots of useful and insightful information in the book and the website. While I have designed, developed, and taught various online courses, I still found the book and the website valuable. I know it will help me, my clients, and my students. Thanks, Patti and Amy!

Book Description
A Santa Fe dad shares heartwarming, comic, often ludicrous tales of raising a family in this laugh-out-loud book perfect for anyone who enjoys the edgy humor of David Sedaris or the whimsical commentary of Dave Barry. Waxing both profound and profane on issues close to a father’s heart—from exploding diapers to toddler tantrums, from the horrors of dressing up as Frosty the Snowman to the moments that make a father proud—Robert Wilder brilliantly captures the joys and absurdities of being a parent today.
With an artist wife and two kids—a daughter, Poppy, and a son, London—Robert Wilder considers himself as open-minded as the next man. Yet even he finds himself parentally challenged when his toddler son, London, careens around the house in the buff or asks the kind of outrageous, embarrassing questions only a kid can ask. A high school teacher who sometimes refers to himself jokingly as Mister Mom (when his wife, Lala, is busy in her studio), Wilder shares warmly funny stories on everything from sleep deprivation to why school-sponsored charities can turn otherwise sane adults into blithering and begging idiots.
Whether trying to conjure up the perfect baby name (“Poppy” came to his wife’s mother in a dream) or hiring a Baby Whisperer to get some much-needed sleep, Wilder offers priceless life lessons on discipline, potty training, even phallic fiddling (courtesy of young London). He describes the perils of learning to live monodextrously (doing everything with one hand while carrying your child around with the other) and the joys of watching his daughter morph into a graceful, wise, unique little person right before his eyes.
By turns tender, irreverent, and hysterically funny,
Daddy Needs a Drink is a hilarious and poignant tribute to his family by a man who truly loves being a father.

Funny, but crass.......2007-08-27
Gave this to my dad for fathers day, and he told me it was a bit embarrasing. Some sexual stories, etc. He may be sensative, I haven't read it. Just be aware if you are giving it to a prude! (:
Hilarious even without kids.......2007-06-15
This book was hilarious..I don't even have children and I was riveted by his imagery and language. You will be pleased to sit down and enjoy a few laughs when you dive in. Great book, fun find, can't wait for his next one.
Funniest Parenting Book Yet!.......2006-12-13
If you are a parent or wanting to be a parent, you should definitely read this book by Robert Wilder. It is a collection of his memories as a father, from the first time he changed his daughter in an Olive Garden Restaurant men's room, to having worn a snowman suit called Frosty and baking in his own fart and stench just to get the love of his daughter. Wilder also narrates the frustrations of being a parent and drastically looking at it in a very side splitting and hilarious way. If you want a book that will make you "pee-in-your-pants-laugh-out-loud-kind" of way and if you want to see the different lengths parents will do to get their children's love, this is the book to read. You will also find in this book how a family friend reacts when his 3 year old son drops the "F-BOMB word", or when a 6 year old girl asks Wilder, "Daddy, what is rape?", and a kid's question on why the sky is blue followed by who, what where and when interrogations. Although this book is about parenting and children, Wilder's language is on the rated R range, which I think is a very effective tool for the adult readers to find amusing, not to mention one chapter that has rated R dialouges with.
Reallly funny!.......2006-11-23
As new parents, my husband and I couldn't stop laughing while reading the stories. We even read sections aloud to other new parent friends.
Fathers are parents too.......2006-11-10
A delightful book which all new parents will appreciate. It
was written by a dad with a sense of humor.
Book Description
In The High–Purpose Company, corporate strategist and researcher Christine Arena shows that
some extraordinary companies are driven by purpose, whereas others simply pretend to be. The High–Purpose Company draws a clear line in the sand, enabling readers to easily distinguish between these two groups––and make a giant leap forward.
Using a groundbreaking methodology, Arena and her research team conducted thousands of hours of analysis on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of 75 well–known firms. The surprising results of the study defy long–held myths, rewrite rules, reframe strategic priorities, and reveal a new breed of business.
Real CSR is about change, not charity. The High–Purpose Company uncovers this and other truths, and guides readers through the step–by–step process that is currently embraced by the world's most forward–thinking firms.

A great read!.......2007-01-21
This is a great book for those who are just learning about CSR as well as those with more experience. The author does a great job of illustrating both successes and failures and asks the readers to really examine the subject of corporate responsibility. Readers learn to explore if companies are just putting on a good act or really making significant, positive strides in their business practices.
Great Read to dispel the myths about Big Bad Companies.......2007-01-14
If you have gotten cynical about corporate social responsibility - this is the book for you! Very hopeful and accessible, even inspiring!
Christine Arena paints a whole different picture of socially responsible companies - they are making money BY being socially responsible, not IN SPITE OF it.
It's research, but not stuffy or academic. The case studies make for a great read - I highly recommend The High Purpose Company.
People who have read the book and commented.......2007-01-11

"Kudos to Christine Arena for daring to challenge sound-bite thinking! She asks important questions and requires the reader to take a fresh look at what it means for companies to be responsible."
- Sue Mecklenburg, vice president sustainable procurement practices, Starbucks Coffee Company
"Arena cuts through the hype and de-mystifies what can seem like a very complex field. This book is a must read for CEO's and future leaders of firms of all sizes."
- Linda Dunkel, President & CEO, Interaction Associates
"Arena strikes a healthy balance by looking at what's right and wrong with the CSR movement. She manages to inspire without ignoring the challenges ahead."
- Mats Lederhausen, managing director, McDonald's Ventures
"An important and much-needed book. Arena unlocked the secret at the heart of business - that companies that say "it's only business" may be abandoning the maximized profit they so monomaniacally seek."
- Gil Friend, CEO, Natural Logic
Elad's review.......2007-01-08
I am a professional in the Corporate social responsibility field who has been very disturbed by the tendency in the field to focus upon right and wrong, good and bad companies while seemingly missing a critical point- businesses are in the business of pleasing shareholders. Ms Arena's book opened up a rare vantage into the CSR filed by demonstrating the business case for CSR and in addition inspiring me by the stories of tremendous good that these very same financially successful firms were achieving.
I beleive that we are seeing a revolution in Capitalism of revival of the interconnections between the common good and the good of the company- Christine has built the foundation for seeing first hand how financial success and doing good are interdependent.
I am very excited by what I have read and individually inspired to pass the word on to colleagues about her book- it is highly readable- well written unlike many business books and full of juicy tid bits about companies i have both admired like Toyota and also those that I would never have thought were worth admiring.
