I loved this book.......2007-01-09
This was the first Lori Wick book I ever read and I LOVED it. I immediately went to the library and read through every book of hers that they had. "Sophie's Heart" and "The Princess" along with this book are probably my favorites, but picking a favorite is like trying to pick a favorite child. Lori does such a good job telling a story and getting you involved in what happens to the character. If I had to say something bad about her books it is that it is always makes me a little sad when I am done with the book, I would love to go on reading forever!
Not her best..........2006-12-28
I am a BIG fan of Lori Wick. I have read most of her books. I found this book hard to read. It took me a long time to get through it. I usually eat up her stuff. The book was just a bummer in my opinion. I usually save the books and reread them but this one I didn't bother, I donated it to the library.
I Liked It.......2006-12-11
I picked up this book recently when we were traveling and read it on the road. I have not read Lori Wick before so didn't have preconceived ideas of her writing. I enjoyed the book immensely. When I finished I went back and re-read parts of it as I tend to miss things the first time around. I thought the part where the book skips to Riggs finding Lorri on the Island was actually an interesting style of writing. Little by little it comes out what happened after the plane crash. Reading the other reviews I noticed no one mentions the grandfather and the impact he has on Lorri's life and helping her to recover such a trauma. From the beginning I was sure Riggs and Lorri would find romance but was curious how the author was going to get them together. I thought his character took such special care of Lorri and was going to make a special person in her life. Even though some of the reviews were pretty critical, I enjoyed the book. Since reading this one, I have read a few more Lori Wick books (The Princess, Who Brings Forth the Wind, To Know Her By Name) and have enjoyed those also. Sometimes I think I want the story to go a little differently but yet understand what the author is trying to accomplish. I enjoy the historical times even if they aren't completely accurate. Anyone enjoying historical Christian romance, another excellent author is Gilbert Morris. I really enjoy his books and as a rule the history in them are right on.
One of her better "stand alone" books.......2006-07-16
Having been a fan of Lori Wick's series, I sometimes have a hard time getting into her stand alone books. For instance, "The Princess" was not one of my favorites. However, "Every Storm" is one of my favorites. Some of the other reviews were critical of the book, but the story line is good, and although some were disappointed by the gap between the sisters boarding the plane and servicemen finding Lorri on the island, I felt it added to the book. Instead of getting all the info. in a neat little package, you get little hints on what happened.
It's a good read. If you really get into the characters when you read keep kleenex handy.
I couldn't finish it..........2006-06-13
Usually I love Wick's books and have sincerly enjoyed her tuckermills books and have read all of her other novels, enjoying Pretence and others the most, but this book was terribly hard to get into. I actually couldn't finish it and gave it to my husband to trade for commentaries (He's a seminary student). I was really disappointed, because when I learned Wick had written a WWII novel I was excited, but my excitement was misplaced.

What a storm.......2007-06-13
I give this book 4.5 stars. Great continuation of the Deveraux series. Tall, handsome, black men who appreciate woman in all shapes, colours and sizes. I loved the story of Julian Snr and Ruth more than Julian Jnr and Maya, maybe because it was tagged on at the end, they deserved their own book to flesh the story out or because father finds secret baby has been done to death in this genre? I found Maya to be a bit of wimp to be honest. This book needs to be read right after The closer I get to you which is Paris and Titus story for some of the events tie in.
Looking forward to reading about Wade and the twins Lucien and Phillipe.
Loved it--2 for the price of one.......2007-05-05
Two Deveraux's are spotlighted in this book, Julian, Sr. with the blossoming of middle age romance and Julian, Jr. with the story of first love. Each story was well written with tenderness and passion. This book was great reading. I loved the two different story lines going on. I also liked the follow-up on the Parris story line. I love the Deveraux clan which I have followed from the beginning. I love the way this author writes her characters, the women are not all model thin and the men are strong, passionate men who love their women. It was nice to see middle age love blossom also.
(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Never too late..........2007-05-02
I try desperately not to judge a book by its cover; front or back. And with BEFORE THE STORM that was a good thing. The story was far more involved than what was expressed on the back cover.
Readers are re-united with the powerful Deveraux clan of New Orleans. This story centers on Julian Deveraux, senior and junior. Fifty-seven-year-old Julian, Sr. has been widowed almost twenty years; he has successfully raised his children and is content with his memories. Thirty-three-year-old Julian, Jr. has been divorced for almost five years, and has sworn off love and marriage. He has not talked to his ex-wife since she left. Paris Deveraux has other ideas for both of them, and has dusted off her bow and arrow. Paris' friend Ruth is age-appropriate and perfect for her father. And while planning for her own wedding, Paris crosses paths with her brother's ex-wife, and stumbles on a secret. She seizes the opportunity to become a savior of sorts for each of them. Can she really pull it off?
BEFORE THE STORM is two stories in one, about two sensitive men who need to overcome past losses. A reference to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina adds realness to the story. What I love most about Ms. Schuster's writing is that the adults are truly adult, and the stories are passionate and real; they make you believe in overcoming all odds. There are several more Deveraux stories and I eagerly await their arrivals.

Two books in one!.......2007-04-03
I really enjoyed this book, despite the false advertising on the back cover. This is really Mac and Ruth's story. Julian & Maya are kind of added on as an afterthought. I know I gave the story 5 stars but Mac & Ruth have such a beautiful love story. It's not often you see such a sensual love story between 50-somethings. They were hotter than the youngsters. I feel Julian & Maya should have had their own book or at least their part expanded. It was wrapped up rather quickly, though a bit comedically. I still really liked it though. The old folks were a lot of fun. And the reactions of the kids to them was hilarious. The scene with the cat and the strapless bra was great! Despite the wrong info on the back cover, I would definitely recommend this book.
Two For the Price of One.......2007-03-20
I have to agree the back of the book was a little deceptive. But it was still a good read and you got two romances for the price of one. And boy do those Deveraux men know how romance and sex a woman up. I enjoy reading about all of them and their loves.

What a difference 22 years makes..........2006-08-30
I am a huge Nora Roberts fan, but it is evident in these early works what a difference 22 years of writing has made for her.
These are so-so short stories that show hints of her current style without the polish.
Risky Business and The Welcoming were okay - nothing special - but could have used a little more character development. Okay as a short stories go.
Storm Warning was definitely not her best effort and could have used about 100 pages of character development to explain the history of the two lead characters - especially the male. (Maybe his character was indicative of the time it was written in and the style used back in 1984.)
All in all an interesting look at her early efforts/style, but her more current works are much better.
Pretty decent .......2006-08-26
This 3 in 1 book by Nora Roberts is the 2006 edition. The first and the third stories are the best. The second one is a little slow, but overall, it is worth reading.
A collection of 3 almost 2 decades old mystery/romances........2006-08-14
I have been reading Nora Roberts and her alter ego J.D. Robb for sometime but never saw these three stories before. I liked the first one okay, felt the second had issues - especially the "hero", and loved the third one.
Each of the stories has the common element of danger thus the collection's title "Dangerous". In "Risky Business" Liz Palmer is a single mom who lives in Cozumel, Mexico and runs a dive shop and dive/fishing/tour boat rental business. She has been there ten years and is an expert at what she does. She has employees - some more transient than others. As she takes some tourists on a glass bottom boat outing, she is upset that one of her employees of only a few weeks, Jerry Sharpe, has not shown up to help her. However, as they tour in the boat gasps and scream suddenly come from the group as Liz sees Jerry's dead body weighed down by an anchor. The police question Liz over and over but she doesn't really know anything and then Joshua Sharpe, attorney from Philadelphia and Jerry's identical twin brother, shows up and also quizzes her. As Joshua and Liz work to find Jerry's killer and what he was up to, an attraction grows. My problem with this story was that Joshua was not as much romantic as many of Ms. Roberts' other heroes. Their romance felt a little forced. But overall a fun read.
My least favorite was "Storm Warning" which is a whodunit like the movie "Clue". While Autumn and her Aunt Tabby were wonderfully fleshed out characters, Lucas seemed way too mean to Autumn and too mysterious and shallow. The mystery was fun though.
Finally my favorite, "The Welcoming" was very sweet and touching for the romance and also exciting for the mystery/suspense so I won't tell anymore here except to say if you haven't read this one, you will enjoy it!
Not for die hard fans!.......2003-11-18
I gave this book two stars - one for Risky Business and one for The Welcoming - they are typical stories written by my favorite author. Predictable, yes, but enjoyable. Storm Warning made me mad. I wish I had not spent the time trying to figure it out, It made no sense! Do not buy this book. Go check it out at the library and read the first and last story, but skip Storm Warning!
First story great....and that's where it ends........2003-07-19
I can't beleive I actually found something written by Nora that I did not like. The first story in this collection is excellent and is worth purchasing the book for. However, the second story is horrible and the male character is just a major creep. I almost didn't finish it. The third story is OK, and worth your time to read, just not her best. I LOVE Nora, but that second story just didn't cut it. If this is your first Nora book - PLEASE go get something else by her - anything - don't let this one turn you off to her. I feel guilty writing this!!! Sorry Nora!

Book Description
In a remote, frozen corner of New Hampshire, a Navy SEAL team and the elite security experts of Troubleshooters Incorporated are going head-to-head as fierce but friendly rivals in a raid-and-rescue training exercise. Despite the frigid winter temperatures, tension smolders between SEAL Petty Officer Mark Jenkins and former cop turned Troubleshooter Lindsey Fontaine after an impulsive night of passion goes awry. And then suddenly Tracy Shapiro, the Troubleshooters' new receptionist, vanishes while playing the role of hostage during a mock rescue operation.
Teaming up with the FBI to launch a manhunt in the treacherous wilderness, Jenk and Lindsey must put aside their feelings as a record snowstorm approaches, dramatically reducing any hope of finding Tracy alive. The trail is colder than the biting New England climate until a lucky break leads to a horrifying discovery - a brutally murdered young woman wearing the jacket Tracy wore when she disappeared. Suddenly there is a chilling certainty that Tracy has fallen prey to a serial killer - one who knows the backwoods terrain and who doesn't play by the rules of engagement.
In a race against time, a raging blizzard, and a cunning opponent, Jenk and Lindsey are put to the ultimate test. Risking everything, they must finally come together in a desperate attempt to save Tracy - and each other.

Suspense and drama plus.......2007-09-19
An all too beleivable story of a monster who prays on women aligned with complex relationships with men and women working toghether in mutual respect. Another character appears weak and inadequate but becomes the heroine when in desperate circumstances. At times horrific and yet compelling, a change from the usual Brockmann style that works brilliantly.
Terrific.......2007-09-10
Suzanne Brockmann is one of my favorite authors. As always this book was very suspenseful and romantic.
ICK!!!.......2007-08-25
Great writing, as usual, but I had to skip a lot of the gruesome details. I just can't read about yucky serial murderers and all the details, well-written though they might be. Otherwise, a good read!
A new kind of story.......2007-08-16
Sometimes it seems as if there are no new stories, and this one definitely is not, but it keeeps your attention. Brockman uses a familiar story tactic that begins with two seemingly unconnected story lines. Each separate storyline is so distinct, that the reader cannot imagine how they will ever come together. In fact, the reader is kept guessing about how they will intertwine right up until the end. When they do come together, it is quite a surprise. There are so many characters and love interests, that I found it confusing and kept mixing up who was dating/seeing whom. The story is a lot like Hannibal lecter, but not nearly as good. The love stuff gets in the way and really isn't necessary. All in all, it was a page turner and I will definitely look for other books by Brockmann.
Suspense and mystery - 5 stars; Romance - 3 stars.......2007-08-13
This tale of SEAL Mark Jenkins and Troubleshooter and ex-cop Lindsey Fontaine had some humorous and touching moments in the romance but both of them were rather insecure and immature for their ages. I prefer the romance of Jane and Cosmos in "Hot Target" much more!
The practice exercises and the hunt for the serial killer were the more interesting parts of the story. NOTE: The synopsis on the back of the paperback is NOT correct. It implies that Mark and Lindsey have their first contact in New Hampshire while it is really back in California. I found that irritating.
This is a very scary serial killer who reminds me of some of James Patterson's better villains in his Alex Cross earlier novels. Not to give away anything but if you pay attention to the details, this murderer rivals some of the best (worst?) that I've read about.
Read it more for the mystery and SEAL vs. Troubleshooters, Inc. fun.

Customer Reviews:
Historical Romance.......2007-03-09
Another Beverly Jenkins hit. I've just about read all of Beverly Jenkins books and trust me this woman can deliver the best...it's never a disappointment with anything she's written. This is a wonderful historical romance book, if you are interested in black history and what black people have done to make the many contributions that we've had to this country, read this book. Beverly does an extensive amount of research when she writes historical books, or any book for that matter and is excellent with providing further insight and websites to further your knowledge. This is another book that doesn't disappoint.
Transported Away.......2007-02-23
Indigo was the first book I read by Beverly Jenkins. Afterwards, I purchased most of her books. I've also purchased a couple of the books that she lists in her Author's Note. Her characters are so life-like. Sometimes I wish I could be transported back in time to see what life was really like for 19th century African Americans.
Beverly Jenkins WINDS OF THE STORM is an awesome tale. .......2007-01-20
Known only as the Butterfly, Zahra fluttered about the country providing information to the Federal forces and aiding in the rescue of runaway slaves and other men and women who required help. Zahra takes great pride in her small contribution to the civil war efforts, but she's never forgotten one of the men she saved - Archer Le Veq. The war is over but Zahra has been requested for a special mission - posing as the madam of a brothel in New Orleans.
Archer Le Veq owns a prominent hotel in New Orleans. During the war, he had worked for the Bureau of Military Information, collecting intelligence on the Confederacy. Until he was captured and came close to losing his life, only to be rescued by a mysterious woman known only as the Butterfly.
In the days following the war, the country is in a state of Reconstruction. For many it's a time of rebuilding and hope. For others, it's a time of a questionable future as they struggle to be accepted into society. Zahra was content with her life in South Carolina. She'd done her part to help her people during the war. She had no intention of going back into the service of the country, but President Grant requested Zahra and promised to look into the situation involving her parents getting their land back. Hoping the president would honor his word and help her parents, Zahra takes the assignment. In order to collect information involving the perilous situations that people of color faced, Zahra will travel to New Orleans posing as the madam of a newly established brothel. Nobody would suspect the proprietor of such an establishment of gathering information. To protect her identity, Zahra wears a domino which only seems to entice the men, including Archer's brother, Phillipe. Everybody wants to know the story behind the mysterious Madam Domino. Archer fully intends to stay away from the house of ill-repute until circumstances bring them together and he finds himself just as enamored of Madam Domino as everyone else. Unlike the others though, Archer has a feeling he's met her before, if he could only remember where . . .
Beverly Jenkins WINDS OF THE STORM is an awesome tale. You not only get a fabulous love story but you get further insight into the history behind the figures who struggled to help ensure every man, woman, and child of every race were treated equally. Zahra is one of the most memorable characters I've ever encountered in a storyline. She's strong willed, incredibly smart, and selfless. Archer is everything Zahra needs in a man - virile, sexy, and he accepts her and the roles she plays in an effort to help their people. There are other equally great characters in this story that do bear mentioning but that would make this review way too long. I highly recommend this book. You'll want to meet the other great characters from this period in our history.
This book is a follow up to Ms. Jenkins book THROUGH THE STORM. I'm sincerely hoping there will be a third book involving Phillipe. He's a dynamic character throughout the plot in this story who had me smiling with his antics. This is a powerfully moving tale that has earned permanent spot on my keeper shelf.

Once again . . ........2007-01-09
Beverly Jenkins is brilliant. I normally read modern-day novels, however, she is the only author whose historical romances I will read. Her historical romance always provide some insight into black history, which is valuable.
HOT! HOT! HOT!.......2006-09-16
Beverly Jenkins has done it AGAIN! Archer and Zahra are sizzling! I absolutely LOVED this book. I read it in a day and a half (because I had to stop and go to work!) and now I want to re-read it again. I think this may have been the best yet. The character of Zahra was exquisitely done. I loved her sense of humor and her ability to "play" with Archer Lev Veq. As a distinguished "gens de coleur" Archer was a highly revered man of color who was wealthy and was in a higher social class than Zahra. So of course, Zahra would never have ranked as a suitable mistress for him but once Archer laid eyes on her, he was totally smitten by the beautiful Butterfly (Zahra's spy name). The playful banter and the electricity between the characters practically leap off the pages and I couldn't get enough. I can't wait until she writes another. Hurry Beverly your fans are EAGERLY waiting!
IF you have never read a Beverly Jenkins book, you are missing out. She does an excellent job of weaving little known facts about African-American history throughout a sensual love story. I have NEVER read another author that has mastered the art of telling an intriguing and suspenseful story while maintaining the eroticism but B.J. has NAILED it! We love you Beverly!! Keep writing!!!
Book Description
With an avid international following for her daring and stylish Wraeththu trilogy, Storm Constantine has been hailed as 'a literary fantasist of outstanding power and originality' by Michael Moorcock, and the 'mythmaking Gothic queen of dark fantasy' by Neil Gaiman. Her latest, The Chronicles of the Magravandias, delivers a stylish blend of ancient sorcery and decadent court intrigue. The Way of Light brings this awesome fantasy epic to a stunning conclusion, as the sudden death of the emperor plunges Magravandias into bloodshed and chaos as various factions attempt to seize the throne.
Customer Reviews:
A fitting conclusion.......2005-08-27
The Magravandian emperor has finally died, and his legitimate heir, Gastern, ascends to the throne. However, the now-former empress Tatrini plots to place another of her sons on the throne by uniting the elemental powers, while the vengeful and obsessive mage Taropat, frightened by his visions of Dragon Heir Valraven becoming the True King, kidnaps Valraven's wife Varencienne and their daughter Ellony. In a consummation of the Chronicles of Magravandias, those who believe in Valraven and those who believe in the Malagash dynasty begin to draw together to decide the fate of the empire.
I was initially extremely wary of approaching the third Magravandias volume, because I simply could not entirely enjoy the first two, especially the overwrought spiritual nonsense of the second. However, I found The Way of Light an extremely exciting surprise - it's the final volume that makes the entire trilogy worth reading. Though Constantine's writing is still annoyingly choppy and often juvenile in feel, what she really shines at is creating intensely heated and painful inter-character relationships, and I felt that The Way of Light is a pinnacle in this area. She excels at bringing together her cast, with many characters finally accepting their roles and responsibilities (Varencienne's maturation and Taropat's loss of his bitterness and acceptance of his former identity as Khaster were particularly fulfilling to watch), and what's more, Constantine, very realistically and painfully, does *not* resolve all of their raw and inconclusive relationships. Just like the ultimate path of the empire, they remain uncertain, and whether or not they are ever resolved depends on the reader's own interpretations and predictions.
Of course, it's a far from perfect book. Constantine's cast is so enormous that it's inevitable that at least a few characters get lost in the mix - Shan, who was nearly the hero of the last book, is essentially completely dropped as a leading protagonist, as is Merlan Leckery, who barely even appears in the book. In addition, the hurried pace of the conclusion undermines her attempts to redeem the reputations of some of the under-appreciated characters, such as Tatrini, Almorante, even Maycarpe, and in particular, Bayard, who began as a very attractively fiery character, disappointingly ends up as a mindless villain.
Still, The Way of Light is most definitely worth reading, even and especially if you were frustrated by the first two books. I look forward to investigating more of Constantine's works now.
Disappointing >_
<.......2004-07-28
The Dragon Sea Heir was average. The Crown of Silence was very interesting (I love the Khaster and Tayven flashback... that's what got me hooked). I've been waiting to get my hands on the conclusion... and when I got my hands on it... I was disappointed. Very disappointed. I thought the story had taken a turn for the worst. One part of the ending was very very unneccessary. I mean, seriously. The way Ms. Constantine made everyone sleep with everyone else... made me lose interest in the character development department because they are all just too darn unfaithful. After I finished the book I really wanted to cry. I had a lot of questions in my head, wanting answers (plot holes). I wish to believe The Crown of Silence was just one book and had no sequel.... I really love the (past) Khaster and Tayven relationship ;_;
Only read it if you're a really really big fan of Ms. Constantine's works...
I love her books. But the sex... the unfaithfulness (of everyone!).. and the ending... of The Way of Light...was too much for me.
Powerful Chronicles of Magravandias fantasy tale.......2003-01-17
The Emperor Leonid's death causes a succession crisis that sends the Magravandias Empire on the verge of civil war as conflicting elements squabble over the throne. The Firemages have their own puppet they want to succeed Leonid. Others believe opening the WAY OF LIGHT will point to the truth. Desperate to avoid genocide, Dragon Lord Valraven Palindrake reluctantly supports Prince Gastern to ascend to the crown. His decision delays a war, but the rivalry remains hot and any stumble will turn the empire into a sea of red.
Valraven's sea-wife Varencienne, worrying about the future of her adopted people, begins an odyssey to confer with her mother, Empress Tatrini, but fails to reach her destination. Instead dark magus, enemies of her husband, take her prisoner. These malevolent beings' plans do not care about body counts only the success of their endeavor. Valraven must find a way to save his spouse and his world even if he must go through the dark to obtain THE WAY OF THE LIGHT.
The final novel in Storm Constantine's powerful Chronicles of Magravandias fantasy trilogy, THE WAY OF THE LIGHT, is a thrilling tale. The story line stays true to its predecessors (SEA DRAGON HEIR and THE CROWN OF SILENCE) while allowing the key cast to grow as major events have impacted them. The vividly described story line is loaded with action that enables the reader to feel the empire is genuine, but it is the strong personality-driven cast that makes this tale and the other two books worth reading by epic fantasy fans.

Enthralling book..........2002-07-29
...and series. "The Way of Light" is an excellent conclusion to a brilliant series. Constantine specializes in beautiful and lyrical language and gorgeously lush descriptions that the bigger-named authors can only dream of; and this book (and series) is no exception. Plot-wise, however, I find the ending a little...anti-climatic, but the rest of the book is so good that it's worth the small disappointment. Anyone familiar with and appreciates Constantine's novels will find this book an absolute delight (...).
The Way of Light.......2002-06-03
If perversion is your bag, this is the book for you. All the male characters are gay or bi-sexual and all the female characters seem to have multiple lovers which seldom include their husbands. I was bored for most of the book, but stuck it out to the end hoping the big fight scene that is building throughout the book would save it. Talk about anticlimatic. The only reason I didn't give it 1 star was the villain. She did an excellent job creating a nasty, female villain.

Excellent maintenance/repair reference.......1997-12-05
This book has a clearly written style that is easy to understand. The illustrations are placed near the aproriate text and referenced in the text.
This book contains many useful references for most of the car's systems. However I believe that more information and illustrations should have been included in the Body and chassis chapter which was quite short and bare. The illustrations in this chapter needed a little more detail especially on how the model years differed.
In addition, therre was virtually no information included on the turbocharger included in two model years and how their exhaust systems differed.
All in all a very good looking reference with a great deal of information. Thanks Chilton!

This engaging addition to the successful Dear America series follows the adventures of Amelia Martin, a lighthouse keeper's daughter living on an island off the coast of Delaware in 1861. Amelia helps her father keep the light and her mother keep the house, but she cannot keep their marriage together. Newbery Medal recipient Karen Hesse (Out of the Dust) cleverly personifies the conflict between North and South, abolitionist and secessionist, Union and Confederacy in the troubled marriage of Amelia's parents. Amelia watches, powerless, as the relationship disintegrates: "I feel as if I am the Light in my family. I must keep my hope burning, so that Father and Mother, even in the darkness that seems to engulf them, might find their way back."
The broken marriage provides a powerful example of the way the Civil War tore apart families and friendships. Girls will thrill to Amelia's descriptions of her tomboyish responsibilities as lighthouse keeper and family breadwinner, her burgeoning love affair with a local boy, and her friendship with her abolitionist uncle. While some of the language and details seem anachronistic, Hesse has crafted a remarkably elegant tale of "girl as emotional beacon," tirelessly watching as her world crashes on the shoals. (Ages 9 and older) --Claire Dederer

Skip the epilogue!.......2006-09-29
This is the first Dear America book I have read and for the most part I really enjoyed how they give you a glimpse into what it was like to live back then. It brings up interesting issues sometimes only glossed over in the history books and makes it more personal. However, two things bothered me: First was the fact that Amelia's parents got divorced. Not just separated, but actually legally divorced. I know the Civil War tore people apart, but actual divorce was very rare during that time. Also, I didn't feel like it was really the Civil War that tore Amelia's parents apart. They don't really discuss it other than that Amelia's mother does not agree with Lincoln and gets angry whenever the subject is brought up. For a fair portrayal of the time, the book should have done a better job representing her mother as someone to sympathize with as well, instead of that she's always in the wrong.
Secondly, the epilogue at the end was completely upsetting. It talks about her Uncle and his common law wife like it was a common occurance! I'm sorry, but back then, a common law wife, especially to an African American was just not so easily accepted. Also, it states that Amelia and Daniel marry and then separate! Come on! Amelia is the source of light and hope through out this book and then she separates from her husband too, for no better reason than he wanted to move west??! Besides once again setting up this kind of relationship as normal for that time period, it completely undercuts and the sincerety and strength of Amelia and Daniel's relationship as set up in the diary.
This book has some great points and wonderful characters but it is ruined by the end.
Unique Portrayal of Life in a Border State.......2006-06-02
This story of life in the border state of Delaware at the first stirrings of the Civil War contains many themes: the importance of human life, feminism, and the difficulty of keeping things together. Amelia's job as a lighthouse worker both helps and hinders the story. The metaphor of lights in lighthouses as those who help keep things together is good, as are some of Amelia's writings about her daily tasks, but others slow down the Civil War part. Well-drawn supporting characters and a likable lead contribute to the enjoyment of this book, but it isn't quite good enough to be worth five stars.
A Family Torn Apart.......2006-01-24
A Light in the Storm is the story a young teenaged girl, Amelia, and how her family is slowly torn apart. Her personal problems slowly begin to outweigh the importance to her of the Nation's issues, when her mother sides with the Confederacy, and her father's loyalties lie with the Union. A good book, but a bit confusing and difficuly in some parts.
A Light In The Storm.......2004-04-23
I liked this book because it had to deal with a lighthouse on Fenwick Island in Delaware during the Civil War in 1861. I don't like the book because Amelia's parents fight a lot like the father is from the north, and the mother is from the south so they have dirrerent opinions, and views. Also I didn't like it because the characters and the setting are not very descriptive; ike the mom, dad, grandpa, and grandmother don't have names or what they look like or how they dress.
I think the worst part is when Inspector Howle talked to Amelia's father and said that she shouldn't be allowed to be an assistant lighthouse keeper because she was to young. Like I said in the first paragraph, when the parents argue is when the book gets sad, and that all she wanted was for their family to be together. Its also kind of sad when her mother wants to leave the island.
The setting is a little island off of Delaware. The characters are Amelia, mom, dad, grandpa, grandmother, and Oda. The conflict is their parents are always fighting. The conflict is Amelia's parents divorce because during the whole book the parents are always fighting. (...)
Sad yet wonderful.......2004-03-18
Amelia Martin lives on Fenwick Island with her parents, and her father is assistant lighthouse keeper. Amelia does more than what is usually expected of a lighthouse keeper's daughter, and she is so good at her job that the head of the lighthouses paid a visit to the island just because of her.
But life is hard for Amelia. Her parent's don't get along, and she is stuck between the two sides of the civil war. Her mother is for the south, and her father is for the north.
When Amelia's best friend is called off to war, can Amelia survive the war in her own heart?
This book is really good. If you like stuff about the civil war, this book is for you.
I felt so sorry of Amelia. I mean, her parents' divorce one of her friends' dies and another one goes off to war. But Amelia was strong, and she didn't let her troubles get the best of her. Now that 's what I like in a girl.

The story of a brave woman and romance.......1998-08-01
I have not found many romances appealing. But this book is different. It's not people doing a bunch of silly things and playing games to attract the opposite sex. It's honest to goodness love. It's about real life. This isn't a fairytale by any means. The language is magical and it will truly steal your heart. It almost made me cry. I recommend this to anyone who likes to read about true love and real life.
Book Description
Alice Marie told herself she would never go back to the hospital to see Cary, that he could rot there for all she cared. She told herself this every day for the next two weeks as she walked the hospital corridor to his room. But a part of her simply wasn't listening. Her heart was still Cary's. "Storms Over Willowbrook" follows Alice Marie back to the rosebud bedroom she grew up in and tells the story of an enduring love that thrives even when threatened by danger and death.
