Book Description
Hey, little ant down in the crack
Can you hear me? Can you talk back?
See my shoe, can you see that?
Well now it's gonna squish you flat! So begins a conversation between a young boy and the ant trembling in the shadow of his sneaker. This playful story brings up questions about the ethics and peer pressure, encouraging the very youngest citizens to decide for themselves: to squish...or not to squish?!
Customer Reviews:
I loved it but..........2007-08-02
I loved this book and the intention the author had to encourage children to consider the moral of the story. Also for a children's book it is well written with amusing rhymes. The kids also loved hearing this story. The only problem was this - they got absolutely the wrong message from it!
The book presents two arguments - the ant pleading for its life, and the boy who questions the value of the ant's life. But the author wrote the boy's side of the story so pleasingly that my kids far more enjoyed siding with the boy than with the ant, despite explanation, to my complete despair! My young listeners were quite young, ages 2-3, so perhaps this book would be better for a slightly older child.
great story.......2007-05-16
This is the best book! I use it in my Kindergarten classroom when we do a thematic unit on bugs. We act out the story then talk about the ending.
Teaches Empathy.......2006-11-30
I am a 3rd grade teacher, and I use this book in my classroom to teach about bullying, peer pressure (the boy's friends are encouraging him to squish the ant), and empathy. My students love it! I wish I could find a poster of the page where the ant is looming over the boy and asking "If you were me, and I were you, what would you want me to do?" What an incredible lesson for kids! The best part is that the book ends with the shoe looming over the ant and leaves the ending up to the reader. Kids love writing (or just inventing) their own endings! GREAT BOOK!
Hey, Little Ant.......2006-01-12
This is an excellent book about an ant who has to convince a boy why he should not squish him with his shoe. It sends a wonderful message to children that you should treat others how you would want to be treated. This rhyming text is very comical to read and the illustrations are excellent. It is a wonderful book for elementary students!
hey little ant.......2002-01-12
This wonderful book gives the reader a great feeling for this poor ant . This little ant has to negotiate for his life!! The only way to make the kid with the big shoe know how it feels to be squished is to turn the tables and make him realize what it feels like to be under an Ants' foot. This book is a must have. It teaches compassion, negotiation, and how to see the world through someonelses eyes.

Good but not for beginners........2007-05-24
I had seen this book in stores before I bought it, so I knew what I was getting into.
I think, over all, it's a good buy. But if you're just learning guitar, I'd wait until you got through Hal Leonard' s guitar method books (1-3), or some other basic guitar method. After a brief review of stumming patterns, the book takes off quite quickly with difficult syncopated rythyms and fancy chords.
The other thing is that, even though it boasts having a lot of songs,I think around forty-five, most of them are just a few measures and riffs from those songs. Only at the end of each chapter is there a complete song to learn.
Not for beginners.......2007-05-16
I am a novice and this was not useful. I am keeping it around for when I get to the intermediate stages because there are some good information for once you know and understand the chords and how to read music.
For the Advancing Beginner.......2007-01-30
One thing to note with this book is right on the cover it says "supplement to Any Guitar Method". This is a book for someone who has learned the very basics and wants to see how all those chords, scales and strumming patterns apply to real music. It does assume a basic level of competence with the guitar. If you are brand new to the guitar, get this book in 6 months or so.
While browsing through the guitar section at a local bookstore, this book caught my eye because it shows real world examples of the techniques I've been currently practicing.
Again this is not for the beginner nor is it intended to be. But if you have the basics down and want to push your guitar playing to the next level this book will certainly get you there.
Good, but not for a beginner........2006-08-02
The title of this book is a bit misleading. This is not a method book with step-by-step lessons. This is a song book. It does tell how to finger most chords used, but that's the extent of the "lessons." This is not for beginners. This won't teach you how to play.
I purchased this book with the Complete Guitar Method series. This is an awesome supplement to that book. The included songs are fantastic, and the tab makes this very easy to use for those of you who don't read music. I've got mixed feelings as the title lead me to think this was something it was not. However, I am happy I have this book because I now have some great songs ready at hand when I need them.
I searched through OLGA and a few other tab sites for these songs, and the quality of the book shines. When you get tabs from the net you get someone's interpretation of a song. When you get this book, you actually get the song as it was actually written. Keep that in mind. I know it's not true of all tabs, but sometimes you should really consider a real book rather than what could possibly be a sloppy rendition from a tab site. Free tabs are great, but you can actually rely on this book to give the true song.
Buy this for the songs, not for the "lessons." It is worth the money just so long as you realize this isn't for the beginner.
Moves on and Skips Crucial Steps.......2006-07-21
This book teaches you a few chords and then 2 pages later introduces a song containing chords that are not taught in the book - stupid!!!! I wasn't impressed at all.
Book Description
Here's an exciting new resource for anyone interested in African music and culture. Songs of West Africa by Dan Gorlin contains over 80 traditional African folk songs and chants in 6 languages along with extensive translations, annotations and performance notes. It may be the most complete collection of African songs ever published.
The book highlights traditional songs from the Anlo-Ewe, Lobi, Ga-Adangbe, Egu, Foh, and related ethnic groups from Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. There are sacred songs from Afa, Agzogbo, Gadzo, and Yewe traditions. Also major secular and historical music including Agbekor, Kinka, Atsia, Gahu, Takada, and more.
Many of the songs are simple to learn, and can be easily taught to grade school students or adapted to other styles of music. But the scope of this book goes far beyond children's songs. Each song is explained in terms of cultural context, and translated in a way that helps you form your own interpretation of its meaning. You'll discover that singing the songs of Africa is a superb way to learn about her people, culture, and history -- and it's fun!
The text includes music fundamentals, a pronunciation guide, and useful introductions to West African society, sensibility, and spirituality. Using the companion audio CD (included) you learn by singing along like young Africans do - or just listen and enjoy. The CD was studio-recorded especially for this book, so vocals and harmonies are easily heard over the supporting drums. With insightful perspectives and a wealth of information, this book is a must-have for students, teachers, and libraries.
Customer Reviews:
Songs of West Africa" by Dan Gorlin is perfect for me. .......2006-08-24
I have studied in Ghana and continue to study and teach this music here in Philadelphia, and this book has enough substance to feed a small country of song hungry drummers. Also, it seems the Author also sings and plays the support drums, lead vocal and chorus (overdubbed); which is really incredible because the CD sounds so Ewe~! A must have for anyone who values beauty and hard work!

At last - a great way to learn some African music!.......2002-09-10
I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this, but this book turned out to be really fun to read! Part storytelling, part anthropology, part language lessons, the book introduces not just songs from six different tribal groups but a sense of how they see the world. The songs are translated, plus the pronounciations written out, and you can play the CD and read along with it - a great help if you want to try singing or drumming the music.

Good book, not as musical as I thought........2005-09-13
This is a good book for music teachers to have, but don't expect to use all 101 games. Many are variations on a theme, are impratical in the classroom, or simply are not very musical. An example of this is a game where students have to act out the titles of songs, like Charades. Sure, it'd probably be fun, but it's hard to say what the students are actually learning about music from that. I'd say there's 10-15 games I think I might use - or leave for a sub to use. I also would modify most of them to make them more appropriate for a limited classroom space.
Great Resource!.......2005-08-02
This book is SO GREAT for teaching music and music themes at home. It works for any number of children, but it is best for a small group of about 3-6. I used it with only one, and it worked ok with some modification. Great variety of games that kids really enjoy playing!
Funtastic.......2005-05-03
Music is fun for play and doesn't always have to be taken so seriously. These well thought-out games are adaptible for so many different moods integrating the rhythum and beauty of auditory art into activity for kids.
Excellent activity ideas.......2002-05-16
I am a music therapy student and I used this book in constructing activities for music classes at a summer camp. This book had so many ideas for activities with music materials and ideas that were easily adaptable to fit the groups' needs. I especially love that few of these games really have a single winner, so everyone gets to participate and enjoy. I would highly recommend this for music therapists and educators as well as anyone else looking for this type of game for children.
101 Music Games for Children.......2000-06-05
Being a music educator, I purchased this book in hopes toenhance my music program. I have found it hard in the past to find musical games that young children can enjoy outside of musical chairs! With this book, I will never have that problem. To insure that my students have FUN learning music, we spend the last part of class playing one of these games. It is easy to do because this book provides you with a guide indicating age appropriateness, how long the game takes (5 min., 15 min., 30 min., etc.), specific number of players needed, and instruments and/or props if needed. Oh, did I mention that you don't have to be a kid to love these games? Well, you don't! There are games in here for those competitive music know-it-alls like myself! Did I mention that this book is great for planning parties? Forget the clown, it's usually a rip off anyway! Besides, music and parties go hand in hand! Last, it's a totally great book! ...

Great book.......2007-05-13
I love the colorful pictures in this book and that it has music to all of the songs. It is a wonderful book and my baby loves when I sing to him!
Great Resource!.......2006-06-29
Beautiful pictures, and easy-to-follow tunes. A must-have for anyone who has children whom they are introducing to Spanish, and very useful for us adults as well!
Nice songs.......2006-02-19
My family enjoys this CD a lot. Mr. Orozco has a wonderful voice to listen to and the lyrics are fun and interesting. One song "Paz y Libertad" is emotionally touching. It is easy to learn Spanish listening to these elegant songs. I bought the other CD, Diez Deditos as a gift for a friend's family and they like that CD too.
Don't forget the CD!.......2005-12-12
This is an excellent book full of poems and songs. All are beatifully illustrated. Our 2 1/2 year old spends a lot of time just looking at the pictures and humming the tunes. Songs are easy to learn, fun to sing, and many have hand signs.
This book of songs is really helpful whether you are trying to emmerse your child in Spanish (as we are), or just exposing your child to a different culture and sounds.
P.S. Don't forget to buy the companion CD!
This book is awesome!.......2005-05-11
I read many reviews about this book before I purchased and I also purchased the music CD. What nobody else mentioned in the reviews I read (that I was very excited about when I discovered it) was that the songs are not only written in Spanish but the English translation is on the same page! This is perfect for me because I'm an adult trying to learn Spanish.
That's not all! If you are a musician, even just a beginner, the musical score is also on each song's page so you can play the songs yourself.
The icing on the cake is that this book is beautifully and very colorfully illustrated.

Planning a medieval Party?.......2002-12-27
If you are planning a Medieval Celebration of any kind this is a great book to buy. My Fiancee and I have been looking for medieval books to plan our wedding by and I stumbled across this one its been very helpful and I'm sure it will get alot of use. It has many tradations recipes and lots of fun games a must have.
So-So Information for Event Planning.......2001-08-24
My fiance and I purchased this book as we are planning a medieval wedding. The title and description of this book implied that we would find lots of valuable information on that topic. Well, we found lots of valuable information for feast planning, or putting on a re-enactment (a la Society for Creative Anachronism), and very little concerning period wedding traditions. The most interesting parts were the recipes/redactions and the instructions for medieval dance steps. There are also several pages that contain sheet music for period songs. If you are looking to put on a reenactment or feast, this is the book for you. If you are looking for anything else, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Reader's Digest Festival of Popular Songs.......2004-04-28
Great songs to play for a party or for your own enjoyment: Georgia on My Mind, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, It's Impossible, My Funny Valentine, The Shadow of your Smile, The Way You Look Tonight, On the Street Where You Live, Honky-Tonk Train. ALL of the songs are excellent piano melodies sutable for the intermediate player.
Many of my favorite songs and yours!.......2003-12-10
From "Somewhere, My Love" to "On Top Of Spaghetti", this book has so many songs that I find myself humming and wishing I could play. Did you like Sesame Street, Dr. Zhivago, The Godfather? Do you like showtunes? There's over a hundred of them here ... the breadth is part of the fun of the book!
Festival of Popular Songs refview.......2000-02-27
Great book for the intermediate pianist. It's one of my favorites. Reader's Digest needs to reprint it. I borrow it at the public library and would buy it if available.
Excellent. Great arrangements. Easy for a beginner........1999-10-16
This songbook has many of the great songs of my youth. The chords are easy, there are guitar chords written above the treble staff and the print is large enough for those of us over 50 to see. The arrangements are outstanding. I wish Readers' Digest would reprint this book. I'd buy it in a second. I have to borrow mine from the public library.
Great music -- easy to play -- good arangements.......1999-03-13
I wish Reader's Digest would print some more of these books. It is such an excellent composite of popular music and the arrangements are fantastic. If anyone has a copy, I would love to buy it.

The 70 song games collected in Brown Girl in the Ring come from the Eastern Caribbean, a crescent-shaped chain of islands that stretches from Puerto Rico to Trinidad and Tobago. The compendium is based on song games that folklorist Alan Lomax recorded in 1962. For each of the songs--which come from Dominica, St. Lucia, Anguilla, Nevis, and Carriacou, as well as Trinidad and Tobago--there are lyrics and music, explications, and instructions on how the games are played. A compact disc is available from Rounder Records featuring Lomax's original recordings.
Book Description
Award-winning author Alan Lomax has dedicated his life to recording the music of cultures that are largely ignored, thereby preserving forever a magnificent musical heritage. In the words of Studs Terkel, Lomax is "one of America's most imaginative and daring musicologists."
Together with J. D. Elder, a former minister of culture of Trinidad and Tobago, and his sister Bess Lomax Hawes, Lomax collects here sixty-eight children's song games--the music, the lyrics, and the stories behind them--from countries throughout the eastern Caribbean. Also included are personal essays that detail Lomax's experiences while recording the music, and his and Elder's encounters with the traditions upon which the songs are based.
Through words, music, and pictures, Brown Girl in the Ring captures a fascinating and essential part of life on the islands of Trinidad, Tobago, Dominica, St. Lucia, Anguilla, Nevis, and Carriacou. And as they have criss-crossed the world in the wake of the great migrations of the last four hundred years, these songs have taken on as well a life of their own, becoming a cherished part of many different cultural traditions.

Valuable Resource.......2000-02-18
This book is an invaluable collection of Caribbean rings games, documenting traditions that are slowing fading away under the crush of North American pop culture. It is a cherished resource for my wife, who grew up in Dominica playing many of these games and now teaches them as part of her dance classes in Ohio. Anyone who buys this book must also get the companion CD from Rounder Records.

Great sing along book.......2007-09-10
My students love this book! It has a very catchy tune and they love doing the motions for each animal. They beg me to do it!!
Barefoot Books are the best!.......2007-05-04
Whenever my sister asks for recommendations for my three-year old's birthday, Christmas, etc. gifts, I give the same answer: ANYTHING from Barefoot Books! The day after receiving Walking Through the Jungle (Sing Along With Fred Penner) for her latest birthday I rushed to the computer and Amazon to order all of Barefoot's CD+books. They are all fantastic - my daughter listens to each of them at least twice a day. She took them to her daycare, as well, and her teacher promptly ordered all of them!
The Animal Boogie.......2007-01-26
What an awesome book! Having read it once, I had to own it. The children in my early childhood classroom adored the rhythm of the text and joyously participated in the book when the CD was played. They couldn't help but move!
Rhythmic, fun, and educational.......2007-01-14
A comment from another reader describes this book as "inane" and unoriginal, but I have to disagree. This book is wonderful! Studies show that repeating patterns of words and rhythms, with just a word or two changing between verses, actually helps strengthen beginning readers' vocabularies, word recognition, and understanding of sequence and structure, all important parts of literacy. The colors in this book are beautiful. There are many interesting details in the illustrations, and I noticed there are little ways that the human characters match up with the animal ones. The CD is great, too - there is a full vocal version as well as an instrumental version, and the tune is really bouncy and catchy. As the editorial review mentions, it is one of the few books I've found that actually includes a child with a disability, which I think is important for young readers to be able to see. I have a six-year-old and twin two-year-olds, and we enjoy this book very much.
Great Activity Book For Teachers.......2006-06-25
Although this book references jungle animals, I use it as an activity when teaching my K-2 about the rainforest. The children absolutely love it. It can also be used as a way to compare the animals in the jungle vs the animals in the rainforest. This year the children put on a performance with the music from the CD. The children's faces were painted according to the animal they represented and they danced away. Just a little imagination and the ideas from this book can be endless....

Great Bible with EXCELLENT CD.......2007-09-10
The Bible stories are good for little ones but the best part is the music CD. My son loves listening to his "Jesus" music all of the time. I don't have any other CD that tops the one that comes with this book.
The best I could find.......2007-01-20
I was specifically searching for a kids story bible (as opposed to daily devotional or other genres) to give my kids a first look at all the major stories in the scriptures. This one was the most thorough of those which were not more or less a full version of the entire text (that would be too much for my little ones). It covers most, but not all, of the most important narrative sections of both the Old and New Testaments. I'm sure it's difficult to edit such a book and decide what to include and what to cut, but this was pretty well done and pretty much what I was looking for. They like the CD's as well.
One of the best Bible story books we own.......2006-11-02
We received this as a gift and I have since given 2 copies away as gifts because we love it so much. My son (3 years old) just loves the music that goes along with the stories and it gives us a great way to start our day with a devotional - usually over breakfast. It ministers to my heart tremendously too!! Each page contains a synopsis of the Biblical account in preschooler verbage and then also gives a one-sentence summary truth from the passage (observation), an interpretation statement, and an application statement. This is not only a solid Bible study method but the applications are also very theologically sound! Wonderful!!!! (p.s. But don't expect the same rigor of the songs - they are not always theologically sound or biblically accurate but they are fun and memorable - a good aid to help remember each story.)
