Hiking Sequoia and Kings Canyon.......2007-09-29
Extremely thorough and helpful!! Even illustrates the incline of trails.
Another Excellent Falcon Guide.......2006-09-27
My wife and I have hiked most of the major national parks in the U.S. over the past 20 years. As a result, we have purchased many hiking guide books. We've found that the Falcon Guide series tend to be best overall. Their detailed (but not cluttered) trail maps are always excellent, the elevation profile charts are a huge help, and their standard format across all books makes it easy to go from park to park without re-learning a new system.
The Sequoia and Kings Canyon book is no exception. It follows the Falcon standard format and was very useful on our recent trip there. Using this book alone, I was able to select 10 fantastic hikes, and each time I felt like I knew what I was getting into based on the book's rich trail descriptions.
I especially appreciated the Highlights section at the top of each trail description. This allowed me to scan the book quickly to find which trails may interest us.
Another excellent resource is the "Trail Finder" section which lists the author's favorite hikes based on criteria such as "Hikes Along Streams", "Hikes with Great Views", "Hikes to Avoid if You Don't Want to See Many People."
But alas, no book is perfect, and this book (and all Falcon Guides) could be improved as follows:
1. Include an alphabetized index of trail names and other common features such as lakes, mountains, etc. So when a park ranger recommends we try the hike to "Panther Falls", we don't have to flip through 286 pages to find it.
2. Put all pertinent trail information (summary, map, elevation chart) for each hike on a single page so that I can rip that page out of the book and take it with me on the hike.
Clarification: A Review of 'Best Easy Day Hikes Seqoia and Kings Canyon'.......2006-08-17
I normally would not review a book that already has eight extended commentaries which cover every positive and negative aspect of the author's text, but there is apparently some confusion among either reviewers, Amazon editors, or both as to which book is actually under review. Laurel Scheidt is the author of two books on hiking in Sequoia and Kings Canyon. The first is a comprehensive hiking guide to the parks and the second is a guide to short day hikes in the region. For whatever reason, all the reviews posted for the latter, 'Best Easy Day Hikes: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks' are actually of the larger comprehensive work. I'm not sure why this occured, but the result is a misleading impression of what 'Best Easy Dayhikes' is all about. (Hopefully my review of 'Dayhikes' will not also be posted under the 'Hiking Sequoia' title as well.) This little book does not talk about the ascent of Mt. Whitney (thank goodness), is not a comprehensive guide to the parks, and the controversy about maps and backpacking routes is simply not applicable to this book at all.
Best Easy Day Hikes lists several hikes in Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and the nearby Jennie Lakes Wilderness that are under 6 miles, relatively level (they have less than 2000 feet of elevation gain--there are very few truly "level" hikes in these parks) and are readily accessible to families with children and those who, like myself, are no longer as fit as they once were. Mileage, elevation data, directions to the trailhead, and short sketch maps are for the most part adequate.
Scheidt includes several classic walks in the park: The Congress Trail, General Grant Tree Loop, Mist Falls, and Cresent Meadow. These are all "must do" hikes if you only have a day or so in the parks as happens all too often with our hectic schedules. Other trails listed are a little less well traveled so hikers can find some semblance of solitude in this sometimes hectic portion of the Sierras. The trip to Weaver Lake falls into this category.
This book merits 3 stars for doing what it sets out to do reasonably well. It lists a number of nice short hikes in various parts of the park. I would like to see a little more natural and local history to give it a higher rating. I would also note that this book is hardly exhaustive of all the truly easy and scenic day hikes in the region. As several reviewers (of the other book) including the author have noted, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and in mine the author has left out too many nice hikes (the Manzanita and Azalea loop in Grant Grove and Buena Vista Peak above Redwood Canyon) to give the book a 5 star rating. Still, unless or until Steve Sorenson's guides are updated, this is the best guide to day hikes in the parks currently in print.
Considerations to ponder.......2006-08-08
I don't like giving bad reviews. In fact, I hate it. However, I'm indebted to give an honest appraisal of this book and explain why my wife and I agreed on a one-star rating. I've read the mostly glowing reviews from others and based my purchase of this book on them. One reviewer however, Candace Scott, gave only two stars. I now agree with her that the descriptions of each trail are flat and uninformative. The author makes some comments that space is limited and certain information is required -- both credible arguments. However, each hike has overly repetitive information. For example, each trail used by horses is prefaced by a rather lengthy section on horse etiquette. In my opinion, repetition like this can be written once in the beginning and referred to if needed. Other similar examples abound. The most glaring problem with this book it the repetition of the trials. For example, hike # 16 through 22 all begin using the same trail, each one being lengthened a bit to another destination -- leading to highly repetitive information and the unfortunate perception that you can go on essentially 7 different hikes. Clearly, this can be condensed. Lastly, there is little information of why you should go on a hike. What are you going to see? What is special about the destination? What special features of the widely varied terrain can you expect? I read this book cover-to-cover, hoping to get some useful information out of it. However, once in Sequoia, my wife and I found ourselves hiking a number of truly outstanding trails not referenced to in the book, and we went on a beautiful semi-loop backpacking trip over two passes and through some of the most interesting geographical terrain I've ever experienced in one area. This 30 mile backpacking trip is referenced, in parts, in the book, as day hikes to various destinations, again duplicating trail information, but the loop (conspicuously absent from this book are loop hikes) is not mentioned and many of the trails are not mentioned. Also lacking is some of the grand highlights, such as two passes we crossed and the startling scenery we witnessed. I highly recommend Sequoia as a grand destination. However, as the author states, we are entitled to our own opinions and my wife and I give this particular guide a very poor rating. It is the only guide book we have thrown away.
perfect hiking guide.......2005-12-04
Just spent a week in Kings Canyon-Sequoia. Took some wonderful hikes and would have been lost without this guide. Its true that the author does not wax poetic about the wonders along each trail but she tells you enough so you can make the decision about whether to take the hike or not. All the technical details and instructions where perfect for the hikes I took. Well worth the money and the only hiking guide I will carry when I visit this area again.

Captain Ring Montgomery was handsome, a skilled rider, a crack shot, popular with the men and their ladies. That was reason enough for a jealous, surly colonel to saddle Montgomery with a most peculiar assignment: to escort an opera singer into the Colorado gold fields.
Ring's plan was to scare the little lady enough so that she'd hightail it for home. After all, a Civil War was brewing! But LaReina, The Singing Duchess -- as Maddie Worth called herself on stage -- didn't scare easy. And she didn't intend to explain her reasons for coming West to any high and mighty soldier. Captain Montgomery might be smart enough to figure out that she was no European duchess, and gentleman enough not to take advantage of her when he'd had the chance, but he'd have to go on thinking she had some insane desire to sing opera to a bunch of ragtag miners. She didn't dare trust him with the truth....

Another Montgomery book!.......2007-08-19
She is known as LaReina, the singiness Duchess. Maddie Worth is a spicy young opera star on a mission to save her beloved younger sister; Laurel. When Captain 'Ring Montgomery is given orders to escort Maddie he is furious! Why should he, the Captain of the fort, play nursemaid to a pretty little singer?
After Maddie refuses his offer to escort her, 'Ring attempts to scare her from her journey so he may return to the fort. Maddie isn't scared easily though and beats 'Ring at his own game.
'Ring is unaware of her real reason for traveling and exposes her lies little by little. No matter how hard he presses she will not give him the truth.
Annoyed with 'Ring hovering over her, she runs from him. This leads to a hilarious and never ending chase through town. Just when he thinks he's caught her, she screams and 'Ring is jumped by eight men. She stops in a bar and takes a few shots of Whiskey and points to 'Ring upon his arrival, "He's paying." before she splits. 'Ring grows frustrated by her game and eventually catches up to her, roughed up with a bruised ego.
During a meeting with one of her blackmailers, 'Ring handcuffs her to him to keep her from escaping. However the next morning they are robbed of their key and horse and must travel down the mountain cuffed together, leading to another hilarious scenario.
No matter how much Maddie wants to tell 'Ring of her sister's abduction she refuses. 'Ring begins to piece things together and discovers her secret about Laurel. He leaves camp one morning and leaves only a note behind. Maddie grows worried that 'Ring won't return. Where did he go?
---
Make sure you read this before you read "Wishes" or the whole story will be spoiled for you! :( It's a wonderful book, but I couldn't help but grow frustrated by 'Ring's game of chase with Maddie. One minute he's romantic and the next minute he's platonic.
If you love Jude Deveraux...you'll love this too!.......2006-03-12
Basically if you like an easy read with a romance, funny comments, and declarations of love in the end...then this book is for you. It's not highly intelligent or factually correct, but it's cute and warms your heart. If you then also have a little knowledge of opera, or just like it, then you'll probably get this book and the characters a little bit better too. I loved it! Hope you will too!
'Ring is so hot!.......2006-03-02
Maddie Worth is known as LaReina, which means the Singing Duchess. She is no duchess, but she is a talented opera singer enjoying her steady rise to stardom. But when she receives a notice that Laurel, her younger sister, has been kidnaped by spies who may or may not be against slaves, she has no choice but to abandon her tour in the Northeast and do what the captors demand from her. Her job is to play decoy by singing across the West and help them deliver messages and notes. Captain Christopher " 'Ring" Montgomery is put in charge of protecting her while she "tours" the West. Straitlaced and honorable to a fault, 'Ring isn't thrilled with the idea of escorting some singer. He has more pressing matters in his hands, like serving his country. His idea is to scare her off so he could be freed of helping her, but Maddie refuses to budge and gives him a hard time as he reluctantly decides to do his job. He realizes that something is troubling her, but will she trust a law-abiding soldier with her dilemma? Her sister's life is in the hands of her captors, and they are not happy with the fact that Maddie is traveling with a soldier. There are various twists throughout the novel.
This pre-Civil War romance is fun, romantic and sensual. Jude Deveraux has once again given me a story that I couldn't put down. 'Ring is so incredibly hot. He is reserved compared to other Deveraux heroes, but his seeming indifference to Maddie makes him all the more sensual and handsome to me because it is obvious to everyone except Maddie that he has the hots for her. And he is hilarious! I loved his quips when Maddie was telling him about her father while she removed cactus thorns from his body, one of the funniest scenes in the novel. Maddie, like all Deveraux heroines before and after her, is spirited, independent and intelligent, a woman before her time. She sort of reminds me of Axia from The Heiress. The sexual tension between them is so palpable it almost jumps off the pages. The love scene seems almost anticlimactic because it isn't quite as wonderful as the tension between the protagonists before they get together. The scene is great, but not as good as I expected. There is also a lot of back story about characters here that could be spun off to another novel, like the stories centered on 'Ring's sister or brother. All in all, Mountain Laurel isn't as engrossing as the works I've read by this author so far, but that's not saying much because this is above most romances I've read and I can't recommend it enough.
The singing Duchess.......2004-08-16
Madelyn Worth (Maddie) is a World famous opera singer also known as La Reina the singing Duchess. She journeys out to the West to rescue her sister, Laurel, who has been held hostage. She must sing in 6 towns and deliver letters at each post.
Captain 'Ring Montgomery has been assigned to escort her across the rough terrain by General Yovington. He's none to pleased to be babysitting a 'travelling singer', not knowing the purpose of her journey into the West. At first he tries to scare her so that she goes running back to safe East. He fails and stands by his duty and escorts from one town to the next.
Maddie does not want 'Ring to travel with her as she thinks that he will put Laurel's life at risk by attempting something dangerous like chasing after the kidnappers. She does all she can to dismiss him but fails. As the journey across the West in search of Laurel, they find a growing attraction for each other that they cannot deny.
It's a pleasure always to read a Jude Deveraux book, especially ones that concern the Montgomery clan. Those Montgomery men sure are to die for. Always handsome, gentle, caring gentlemen. However, I was not drawn into the love story. I could not believe that these two people really cared for each other. Neither did I warm to Maddie who I thought was rather spoilt. However, the plot runs smoothly and the secondary charachters add flavour to the book. 'Ring Montgomery also makes an guest appearance in "Eternity" also by Jude Deveraux which I thought was a much better book than the present.

Best Romance Novel Ever.......2004-07-08
a huge Jude fan, and would read any of her novels based on hr authroship alone. But this book stands alone in her series and no romance book I've ever read makes me cry so much, laugh so hard, or fall in love with the same man so often (just don't tell my future husband that).
'Ring isn't dreamy, he's too straitlaced and perfect. Tall, dark, handsome, devoted to his duty as an army officer and to his men he needs excitement.
Enter LaReina, the singing duchess. She's actually a mountain girl, daughter of famous explorers who's sister Laurel has been kidnapped. For ransom she must transport gold in her giant coach under the cover of a singing tour.
Her friend sent for one man to escort her but since he died Ring the tight-butt comes along to spar verbally with her and warily watch her three hired companions.
Filled with beautiful descriptions of Native Americans, really colorful secondary characters, and great humor that will have you giggling this is a timeless escape.
And the love between these two characters is so real it will instantly make you remember how it feels to fall in love. No hate-love here it's simple attraction and two very well rounded characters with their own wounds and insecurities coming together in desperate times.
The sex is very minimal and towards the end but this is the most sensual thing I've ever read. The anticipation that builds between these two will have you chasing your honey that night.
How I wish they'd make a movie of this novel! But for now, I'll keep reading it, and it would be so terrible if you missed this one.
Admitedly, the follow up "Wishes" about their son is very funny but lackluster in comparison, but you revisit with these heroes. And twenty some odd years later in the second book, you feel their love just as strongly.
Don't miss this or you will be sorry!

Book Description
In 1928 New York native Muriel Earley Sheppard moved with her mining engineer husband to the Toe River Valley an isolated pocket in North Carolina between the Blue Ridge and Iron Mountains. Sheppard began visiting her neighbors and forming friendships in remote coves and rocky clearings, and in 1935 her account of life in the mountainsCabins in the Laurelwas published. The book included 128 striking photographs by the well-known Chapel Hill photographer, Bayard Wootten, a frequent visitor to the area.
The early reviews of Cabins in the Laurel were overwhelmingly positive, but the mountain peopleSheppard's friends and subjectsinitially felt that she had portrayed them as too old-fashioned, even backward. As novelist John Ehle shows in his foreword, though, fifty years have made a huge difference, and the people of the Toe River Valley have been among its most affectionate readers.
This new large-format edition, which makes use of many of Wootten's original negatives, will introduce Sheppard's words and Wootten's photography to a whole new generation of readersin the Valley and beyond.

A wonderful adventure.......1999-11-25
I thought this book was an exciting story. It is definitely a page turner. If you like stories with runaways hiding in the mountains, this book is for you. It was set in 1969, which makes it even better since there aren't very many modern appliances like TV to get in the way of the plot. This story gave me this feeling which I can't quite explain, but the feeling was wonderful. I am talking too much, so I will leave you to decide for yourself if you want to read this book, although anyone in middle school or high school would definitely like it if they like adventures and reading.
Review from an 8th graders point of view.......1998-12-02
I think this book is suppurbly writen and is great for any one who likes reading strong, gripping books. The auther does a wounderful job of flowing through the stages of someone who has lost a loved one. Great for young Adults.
Stories like this live on in your heart........1997-04-25
Sid Hite has created a cast of characters you would want to know. He brings you into the story masterfully, makes you care for each and every person in the story, makes you hope for the best in their lives. His descriptions of the time in which the story takes place, the people, the places and events, pull you into the story and don't let you out, even when the tale is "finished". Stories like this live on in your heart. I especially liked his description of a hurricane which moved inland, and how it affected the weather miles away, and how that in turn has such a profound affect on the lives of each of the characters. A wonderfully written tale. I am looking forward to future tales. ---Geoffrey C. Thomas

A Concise but Incomplete Guide to Virginia's National Forests.......2005-11-12
Spanning much of western Virginia, the combined George Washington and Jefferson National Forests provide some of the best and most abundant hiking in Virginia. Being an avid hiker and planning to spend a few months in central Virginia, I chose to purchase this guide to give me some hiking ideas. Unfortunately, I was not particularly happy with what I got.
This guide describes trails from 10 selected areas in the national forests. While the selected areas range geographically from Big Schloss in the north to Mount Rogers in the south, all of the areas selected are remote wilderness areas. Many excellent dayhiking trails (such as the Cascades Trail near Blacksburg) are left out. While some people enjoy long wilderness dayhikes or backpacking trips, many hikers (such as myself) prefer more manageable dayhikes. Due to the areas selected for description, very few hikes in this book fit into that category. While it would be impossible to describe all of the national forest trails in 193 pocket-sized pages, more variety would allow this book to be used by a wider audience.
Normally in my reviews I give a description of what is included with each hike. With this guide, that is somewhat difficult because Karin doesn't really describe hikes. Instead, she simply describes each trail in the selected area, usually giving no indication as to how they might be put together to get a nice loop (or other) hike. The problem with this method is that the author ends up merely recounting facts about the trail rather than describing a hiking experience. As such, while the descriptions contain some good information, it is hard to get a feel for what hiking this trail in person would be like. Also, while each selected area comes with an area map (with contour lines!) and an area overview, you have to be careful relying on her maps: quite a few details are omitted, and frequently the maps have been rotated on the page so as to best fit the shape of the region (so north is not necessarily "up"). Thus, in addition to leaving a lot of hikes out, the descriptions that do appear in this book leave somewhat to be desired.
In conclusion, if you are looking for some detailed information on the wilderness areas in George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, perhaps for a backpacking trip, this guide might be of interest to you. For the rest of us, this guide will be too narrow in focus and too hard to use. Most people should consider one of the 50-hikes books instead of this guide.

From First Sight . . .
No romantic fool, CJ Larson didn't feel instant attraction to anyone -- least of all a decidedly unspiritual heartbreaker with a lady-killer grin. But the spunky horse trainer couldn't deny the electricity zinging between her and veterinarian Cole Taggert any more than she could deny her own steadfast faith . . .
To Second Thoughts
The moment Cole spotted CJ's well-worn Bible, he knew he was in trouble. Clearly she wasn't the woman for him -- no matter how hard she made his noncommittal heart thump. And contrary to CJ's accusations, Cole wasn't running from God or her. But that was getting harder to prove, much less believe . . .
