Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This book was very good and I enjoyed it quite a bit! Charlie Bone is a likeable character with many great friends who help him in his quests to set things right. This book was very exciting and I would recommend it to readers ages nine and older.

The Balance Must Be Kept!.......2007-05-11

Charlie Bone, whose life has NEVER been easy, gets slammed with a whole new problem in CASTLE OF MIRRORS. Old Ezekial Bloor and Charlie's aunts, the Yewbeam sisters, have managed to resurrect a ghostly horse creature that they believe has the heart of an old, fierce warrior named Borlath. They indend to use the creature against Charlie and his other endowed friends at Bloor's Academy. However, something has gone drastically wrong.

Just as with the previous Charlie Bone books, author Jenny Nimmo keeps a lot of balls in the air. A lot of possibilities and threats dangle in front of the reader as they cruise through this tale. It seems as though disaster and defeat lurk around every corner.

Charlie is still looking for his father Lyle, whom everyone believe is dead but Charlie is certain is still alive. Poor Billy Raven still hasn't been adopted, but he gets adopted in this one--by the most evil people in the world.

More of the Yewbeam family lineage is discovered, as well as what happened to many of the Red King's children. The things that bind Charlie and his friends, family ties as well as personal stakes, grow even stronger in this novel.

I read these books to my nine-year-old, who enjoys them immensely and takes the tests on the Accelerated Reader program at his school. I enjoy how easy they are to read aloud, and the degree of history that Nimmo has put in each of her novels, building on what has gone on before. The plots do tend to be somewhat repetitive, but they are Charlie Bone books. They tell a certain kind of story with certain elements that the young readers require.

The Charlie Bone books are great escapist fiction for the Harry Potter crowd while they're waiting on the final book in that series. And Charlie Bone hasn't quite progressed to the level of darkness that the Potter books have. Charlie Bone still guarantees excitement AND laughs.

Enjoyable But Flawed.......2007-01-15

Charlie Bone is worried about his friend, Billy Raven. Billy, an albino and an orphan, has longed for a family of his own and it seems like his wish has come true when Mr. and Mrs. de Grey agree to adopt him. Charlie is happy for Billy, but the de Grey's are friends of the Bloor family and Charlie doesn't trust them. Charlie is right to be worried - the de Grey's have powers that literally won't let Billy leave the house unless he is going to school. Charlie, his Uncle Paton, and his friends all try to find a way to get Billy out of the de Grey's house and to a place where he'll be safe. Charlie also wonders what is going on at his school Bloor's Academy. Piano teacher Mr. Pilgrim is gone and his replacement, Tantalus Ebony, is a bit odd. Charlie also wonders what's up with a new student, Joshua Tilpin, who seems to be magnetic. Charlie also wonders why his friend Olivia is acting so strange. On top of it all, Charlie keeps searching for his missing father.

"Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors" certainly has its good points. For one thing, some of the children grow as characters, especially Billy and Olivia. Author Jenny Nimmo also shows some increasing aspects of Charlie's ability to read the thoughts of people in photographs and pictures. There's a nice sense of humor throughout the book, with some punny word play and an especially funny scene at the Pet's Café. The fantasy elements are nicely done, especially the introduction of Alice Angel, and a wonderfully imaginative scene involving written oaths coming alive and attacking Charlie and his friends. The "flames" as always, add much to the fantasy elements.

However, the book has its flaws. While some characters are well developed, other characters aren't developed at all. Once again Nimmo awkwardly gets rid of characters without any real explanation as to why they are gone. New characters that are added are underdeveloped, especially Joshua Tilpin and Tantalus Ebony. With the exception of Uncle Paton, most of the "good" adults are once again useless, especially Charlie's mother, Amy. Charlie's life at school is not particularly well-written - it's not clear what classes he takes and what classes many of the teachers actually teach. One plotline - losing balance - was very interesting, but felt thrown in at the last moment and could have been much more developed. The ongoing plot line of Charlie looking for his father could have been plotted and written better since it's obvious who his father really is.

The Children of the Red King series is a quick, at times enjoyable read, but continues to be somewhat frustrating.

A great read.......2006-12-30

This was another installment of the Charlie Bone books and was as good as the others. Poor Billy Raven finally gets parents and they turn out to be horrible...as we knew they would. More of the history of the Red King is brought out in this book and some of the main characters are further developed. Charlie is a likeable character and it is easy to empathize with him, especially as he is so determined to find his lost father. The books are well constructed and enjoyable to read.

Fantastic book, well made and bound and a old book shop look. I loved uncle when i was young my favorite was Uncle and the treacle trouble and im hoping they will bring this out in the same format. Uncle is a great book for children and adults to read and the illustrations by quentin blake are excellent - if you like uncle you'll love walter moers!

This is the first and only Victoria Holt book I have read yet. I love mysteries and read them often. Of all mysteries I have read this is one of the best. I liked it so much sometimes I would stay up into the early hours of the morning because I could not put it down. It is a wonderful book, give it a try.I have plans to read many more of her books. She is one of the top authors on my list of favorite authors.

Another classic tale of suspense from Victoria Holt.......2004-07-01

King of the Castle is a classic Victoria Holt suspense novel: a young heroine visits a strange locale, gets caught up in a series of mysterious events, and becomes romantically involved with someone who may be a murderer. In this case, the protagonist is Dallas Lawson, who, at the age of 28 and unmarried, is left bereft after the death of her father. In desperation, she accepts (under false pretenses) a commission which had been offered to her father three years before: the restoration of paintings at a French chateau. But of course, once she arrives, she finds much more than she bargained for: the unsolved mystery of the lost family emeralds, which disappeared during the Revolution; a wayward teenage girl who may actually intend her harm; rumors that the Comte of the chateau murdered his wife; and of course, the enigmatic comte himself. As always, Holt's storyline is both interesting and engaging, although those who have read many of her books may find the progression of the plot to be somewhat predictable. However, the ending definitely comes as a surprise in this enjoyable historical thriller.

Wonderful.......2003-07-20

I just finished this book (my 12th Victoria Holt novel!!) and like always, she can spin a tale of gothic romance like no one else. I wish, God how I wish, this talented woman was still alive and writing, because no one did it better. Her sense of detail, setting, people, is just so lush and vibrant. This novel is set in France and revived my interest in French culture! This is also a fast moving book, full of energy. You will love it! If you have never read Miss Holt, read this, Mistress of Mellyn, and On the Night of the Seventh Moon and just see how quickly you become a huge fan!

The king of the castles suspense.......2002-02-20

This book is good at keeping you in suspense. Dallas Lawson is a painter who goes to a country estate wich belongs to a mysterious and aloof man(the comte)durring the 1800's. Where she is thrown into mystery and adventure. She went there to find a job of restoring paintings only the job of restoring wrong doing has found her. I highly recommend this book. Its the kind of book to read on a dark rainy day or anytime for that matter.

An evil man opens a curio shop in the small town of Castle Rock. The shop caters to people's innermost desires. For example, there is a horse-racing toy. You make tags that have the names of horses that are going to be in a particular race. Then you put the tags on the toy horses, wind up the toy, and see which horse wins. From there you make your bet. You will win, but at a price--paid to the devil.

I couldn't put this book down. It hooked me from page one.

A great novel........2007-06-20

I just finished this, it rocks. A great ending to Stephen King's Castle Rock stories. The only bad part of this book was the epilogue (You've Been Here Before), it was one of the worst ones I have seen. I wish King had ended it where the last view of the town was shown. Other than the terrible epilogue, this was a magnificent novel.

P.S. Stay away from the movie, it is a piece of crap and it sucks.

But thats how we like it.
This book had one of the most disturbing fights between two women I've ever read. I was reading it in bed (my girlfriend was sleeping next to me) and I kept laughing nervously as the scene escalated. Pretty nasty...

This is a cool and original story by one of the best story tellers in America.

The end of Castle Rock!.......2007-03-03

9.0 STARS OUT OF 10!!!!!!!!!

Once upon a time, I was 13 years old and hanging at a buddies house. Unlike most of my peers at that age, I was an avid reader. I graduated from the Hardy Boys, to Goosebumps(LOL), and was currently tackling John Grisham and the like. I was waiting to get onto the next game of NHL 93 for Sega Genesis when I noticed my buddies mother's bookshelf in the living room. I started digging through it and with pure luck I ended up with Needful Things.

I hadn't the slightest idea that this book was the epic ending of a set of books occurring in a small town called Castle Rock. I hadn't the slightest idea who Stephen King was except he wrote horror novels(some of which were turned into bad movies), and that those novels sold very well. That stuff didn't matter. I cracked open that hefty book and before long I was addicted. It seemed like I was missing out on some inside jokes and plots, but it didn't matter. The book blew my mind. I couldn't believe the time I wasted the last few years reading anything different.

Anyway, 14 years later, I have read pretty much everything King has written a handful of times. With nothing good to read of late, I've been reading some of King's novels for the 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th time. Needful Things was just finished for the 2nd time.

Stephen King visited the fictional town of Castle Rock in several novels including the Dead Zone and Cujo among others. This is the "last" of the Castle Rock novels. The book starts with a new shop in town called Needful Things. It seems to have at least one item that everyone who shops there just HAS to buy. Usually such items would cost an arm and a leg, but not at Needful Things. These items are all for very cheap barring the customer does the owner of the shop a little favor. These favors are overall pretty small tasks and range from seemingly harmless pranks to petty mischief. As you would think, the owner of this shop has a little secret that the townsfolk are soon to find out.

Needful Things is a long and pretty good novel starring not only new characters but also a handful of characters from Castle Rock novels past and present. While there are many little references and inside jokes(A scene with Cujo's ghost was my favorite), you do not need prior knowledge of Castle Rock to enjoy this book. My only qualm with this book is the very ending. This is a long book with A LOT of slow building tension that leads to a very exciting last one hundred pages. To me the last scene is very anti-climactic and hinders an all around good book from being an all around GREAT book.

The King lives........2007-02-15

Another small town gone wrong. All of the great, almost real characters you've come to expect from Stephen King. The concept was the real pull for me... evil comes to a town and manipulates the residents into turning on one another. I've always been interested in the thin line between good and evil... about what it takes to turn a good person bad. That is what this story explores.

And just a side note: This is no longer "The Last Castle Rock Story"... that title should now be given to Lisey's Story. Many of the deputies from Needful Things appear in Lisey's Story, some of the action occurs in Castle Rock, and Lisey herself lives just a bit outside of town.

What a pleasure to see this charming children's chapter book back in print. It was a favorite of mine when I was grade-school age, and an old, taped-up and battered copy still sits on on my bookshelf. In this tale, the lives and adventures of a family of fairies and half-fairies are paraded before the eyes of Lucy, a little human girl who has wandered into the borderlands of their world. A mysterious young man named Michael takes Lucy to a deserted castle where the shadows of past inhabitants can be seen on the walls of a tower room. As Lucy watches the shadows move about, Michael identifies each figure, and recounts their adventures of long, long ago.

The stories of the fairy princes and princesses, and their human and non-human relatives and associates, are told a simple but descriptive prose that young readers should find appealing. For children still a little bit young for the vocabulary of Harry Potter, but too old for Dr. Seuss, this is a perfect read. The illustrations are delightful as well--how I loved the pictures of beautiful Princess Meira and her friend, the dragon Branstookah!

Magical classic back in print.......2006-05-28

This compelling fantasy is back in print after many years, and would make a great gift to any 7-11 year old. It was my mother's favorite growing up, then mine, and I have this expanded edition to my 8 year old niece who says it is better than Harry Potter!

Shadow Castle.......2006-04-08

I was so very happy to find that Amazon has this book....I have looked for years for this book..I had read it has a child and loved it I read it so many times it was worn out..Then for some reason it disappeared...I was quiet upset for the loss of my book
I know Shadow Castle almost Verbatim......This is perhaps one of the best childrens book ever written if not the best...I have bought a copy and shall keep it safe to read to my grandchildren

Finally found it again!!.......2006-02-01

I read this book when I was about 10 and then it disappeared. Since I couldn't remember the name of the title it took me about 3 weeks of typing in every key word I could think of and had just about given up when I found it again. I think this is one of the best children's books ever with great characters and plot and just seems timeless! I know my niece will enjoy it as much as I did and still do and I'm so glad it's back in print.

Déja vu.......2005-03-21

The first novel I read by Mrs. Holt was "Mistress of Mellyn" and I was enraptured, I simply could not put it down. Until today, it is one of my favorite novels and it has been re-read many, many times. When I bought the volume that included my cult novel plus three others, I must confess I had great expectations. Too great, maybe. The stories have pretty much the same elements - an old mansion/ castle "with beautifully carved ceilings"; the sensual, manly, rich and not such a decent hero, who presumably (or actually) has a lover, a beautiful, sensual and married woman; the impoverished, proud and "by no means a beauty" heroine; the troubled child; the woman who loves the old house and knows all about it and intends to marry the hero to have the house, and so on and so forth. After finishing each of the three first novels, I was left with a boring feeling of déja vu and as passed on to the next, I started looking for all the well-known elements. "Mistress of Mellyn" is still and will remain for all times one of my favorite novels and I intend to re-read it plenty of times more. But the other three novels in this volume - and here I beg pardon of all who are fans of these stories - were like drafts to my favorite novel, and therefore a big waste of time.

Inside and out.......2002-01-01

I probably looked at 8 books on the Loire chateuaxs, and this was the best. Great photographs, laid out well, great information on each of the castles/chateauxs, lots of photos of the inside decoration and furniture. This book gave me a better understanding of the landscaping around the castles as well. If you are planning to visit the Loire valley, and you are trying to decide which castles to visit, this book is a must. It is also and excellent armchair-traveller/coffee-table book.
