5 out of 5 stars Volume 2..........2006-02-26

While a some elements of In Sylvan Shadows seem to be, ahem, borrowed from Tolkien, there are also concepts that the fantasy genre at large could do well to to emulate. Take Rufo - he's not "OMG pure evil!!!", he's just a coward. Cadderly struggles with his humanity more in this volume, whether his mercy is a strength or a weakness. And, if nothing else, it's very nice to read a novel where the climax is not a dramatic duel (although there are plenty of those) but a healing spell.

5 out of 5 stars Oo oi!.......2004-07-21

Well this was quite an interesting departure from the first book of the series. I don't know why people are giving it bad reviews, but I thought it was great. Cadderly's life changes and all of a sudden he's in a forest, watching elves battle goblins and giants. The events in the first book still haunt him and affect how he considers his enemies. Cadderly is worth reading about.

All of the new characters are enjoyable to read about as well, and I found myself saddened by some of the elven struggles, thinking they would be annihilated. It is very interesting to read how the main character esteems himself, considering everyone around him seems to have a better use than he does. And once again, I cannot resist the Bouldershoulder brothers. I want a painting of Pikel with his pot helmet covering his face right over my fireplace!

I really got into the book later on, though, when Cadderly and his group are on the verge of truly being killed. Maybe I'm vulnerable and can't predict books like other people, but I had no idea what was going to happen.

A great read and justifies reading the whole series, in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Salvatore does it again.......2003-08-11

This was a wonderful book, I'm not sure what else can be said.
Cadderly, first of all, is one of the most unlikely of heros. He hates violence and while he was force to kill the evil priest Barjin in Canticle (the first book in the series) that moment haunts him constantly. He isn't the usual hero who knows that killing can be justified. Cadderly is the opposite, no matter how evil the opponents he is reluctant to attack... unless that being is thretening his Danica of course.
And that brings me to my second point, Danica and Cadderly. I have read all of Salvatore's books and never in any other series does he create such a mature relationship as there is between Cadderly and Danica. It adds a nice sense of need for action thoughout the book.
Thirdly there are the villans and semi-villans. Aballister stays in the backround while Druzil, Dorigen and Ragnor and his hordes try to overrun the forest of Shilmistra. Druzil and Dorigen use poor Kierkan Rufo (the same person Barjin used as his catalyst) Rufo is the semi-villan. I haven't read a review yet that say's he is a villan but he should be considered one. While his evil acts aren't always done of his own free will his never has the mind that maybe sacrificing himself could save dozens of others. His selfishness is what makes him a villan and his jealousy makes him a perfect scapegaot for the real bad guys. Everyone has read about a reluctant hero but the reluctant villan role isn't often played. It is a nice touch.
Now you might wonder why I only gave this only four stars and that is because though this is a great book and worthwhile read is does get tedious. For most of the book Cadderly, Danica, Elbereth (an elven prince) and the Bouldershoulder Brothers (who I just can't get enough of) are traipsing about the forest of Shilmistra, battling goblins and the like. At times there seems to be no destination but this problem is always quickly resolved. I'm probably just being picky, to tell you the truth.
Pick this one up, it is a good continuation of a great series.

3 out of 5 stars Rumble in the Forest.......2003-03-13

The second book of the Cleric Quintet begins with the elves of the nearby forest of Shilmista seeking the aid of the keepers of the Edificant Library. Not long afterwards the group of unlikely heroes sets out to save the forest. The rest of the book chronicles the exploits of the small group that ultimately serves as the deciding factor in the war in the woods.

This book reminded me a lot of Siege of Darkness in the Drizzt series. The novel was a lot faster paced than the first novel in the series, Canticle. I would definitely say I enjoyed this book more than the previous one. However, I would not consider this a great novel.

What I did like was the struggle for power in Castle Trinity. One thing Salvatore has a knack for is writing interesting villains. The intrigue between the evil forces truly is what drives the story. I would have said the same about the elves, but I have seen the same story in the Lord of the Rings. As for the rest of the forces of good, well its not all bad. Danica continues to be interesting and her fighting abilities are wonderfully portrayed. Ivan also continues to impress and his sarcastic attitude always makes me smile. However, Pickel is still the annoying dolt sidekick and dumb as ever. And Cadderly is what really pulls the story down. His constant whining is taken to an art form and it had me yearning for his demise through half the book. But fortunately, by the end of the book he changes his tune a little. He continues to oppose the taking of life, but he grows up and does what he can to help his friends.

To me this novel, like the first, was a mixed bag. The battles scenes were much better in this book. But while the character interactions generally improved by the end of the book, parts of the book are just annoying to read. There is one thing that really bothered me. The fleecing of ideas from Tolkien does bother me and it is something I also noticed in Streams of Silver, written by Salvatore as well. I like most of Salvatore's books, but he needs to write his own story.

3 out of 5 stars A battle in book form; some character development.......2002-07-31

In comparing this novel with the previous one in the series, "Canticle," this strikes me as a book-length battle with little else. Though I recognize that this was necessary for the story that Salvatore is trying to tell, it was not my preference.

The interesting parts of the novel are Cadderly's (the main character) struggle with violence; he struggles with every battle compared to his more worldly friends (Cadderly has lived his whole life in the monastery-like Edificant Library). In addition, the relationship among the villains (the operate as a triumvirate; priests, wizards and fighters) is more thoroughly fleshed out. The novel takes place in an Elven forest that has been invaded by goblins, ogres, giants etc.. The elves of the forest had many parallels to Tolkien's elves. For example, Tolkien's and Salvatore's elves are in the decline and they have few warriors to combat the increasing threats of the world. There is also the antagonism between dwarves and elves, which seems lifted from Tolkien's work. Also, readers of Tolkien will recognize the concept of the ents in this novel.

Salvatore's writing of battle is quite appropriate to a fantasy setting; there is some use of magic, but most of the battles are won on the basis of cunning and technique rather than wizardry. Some of the other characters developed in this novel caught my interest. There is a developing love interest between Cadderly and Danica (a monk whose discipline has allowed hear to become a formidable warrior), which is something different from the traditional prince and princess concept. There are also the two Dwarves (Ivan and Pikel) who provide a measure of comic relief. The brothers were the cooks of the Edificant Library but once summoned back to adventuring, they prove a considerable asset.

This novel was something of a mild disappointment after the interesting, fresh story that the first novel began with. The third novel in the series "Night Masks" appears more promising but I wonder how the series will play out.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-09-16

Elaine Cunningham does a wonderful job in this book as all the other reviewers before me have surely said. And it is a little late for me to review this book i guess you can say, but I must tell you that I have gotten a late start in reading forgotten realms novels, and I have caught up and am an avid reader of these novels as well.

Back to the reciew of Silver Shadows, this book shows the quest that Arilyn undertakes independently of Danilo Thann. If you are reading this book, you have surely read Elfsong, and that is the book that describes Danilo's quest for the harpers. Elaine is a great story teller and from first point on is able to apprehend your attention and take you through Arilyn's journey of her self and for the harpers and the elves of evermeet. In addition throughout this quest, you see the maturity of Arilyn as a person since Elfshadow.

Overall Elaine Cunningham is one of my favourite authors of the realms, and this book is one of the various Forgotten Realms books i would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Tour de force..........2007-03-26

After many boring and sometimes offensive perspectives of the Forgotten Realms, I finally come to Silver Shadows. It is one of the best fantasy tales I have ever read. Ms Cunningham has her hands on the pulse of Faerun as the story begins where her others left off. This one completely envelopes and compliments Elfsong and doesnt need to be read in sequence. The publisher like series or trilogies. This is both for marketing and in most cases, rewrites of Lord of the Rings. "There is gold in them dungeons!"

This book was the last big published effort by old TSR. A name that strikes fear and excitement in the publishing industry. Most of the time, pulp is the result. This author was the exception. While Ed Greenwood created the Forgotten Realms, he has some problems telling his stories! This is a wonderful setting with infinite possibilities. Most guest authors bring hack-saws to it. This title shines with a timeless appeal and original plot that is hard to beat.

Arilyn Moonblade was introduced in Elfshadow in 1991. Her temperment is not appealing as the story unfolds, yet her spirit makes her likeable. The adventure she undertakes is engrossing and highly imaginable. It seems to come beyond the Realms and into the very heart of the meaning of "fairy tale". Tolkien is left out of the picture, which seems to be a problem for other authors of this setting. Humor and Fun are highlights of this thrilling tale, that itself would make a great movie in the proper hands. The bad guys are loathesome and the Elves are a delight. Oh, I almost forgot a nice dragon thrown in.

Ms Cunningham has exceptional skills at creating a world that is filled with whimsy, light romance, laughter, and totally engrossing battle scenes! Now if only the rest of the authors could be this good!

5 out of 5 stars A fine continuation of a noble series.......2006-11-10

Yet again Arylyn Moonblade is off to adventure, but this time at the behest of the Queen of Evermeet?! In this book we go from one suprise to yet another as Arylyn finds herself in trying times even as her associate (Danilo Thann) has his own adventure in the second book of the series. This really is a great book for anyone who loves stories involving elves and heroic selfless deeds. It is a good read and worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars WELL DONE Elaine Cunningham-AGAIN!!!.......2004-06-19

Arilyn Moonblade is back! The half-elf Harper finds herself involved in another adventure in the lands of Tethyr this time, tying to save Green (Wild) elves from Zhentilar deserters.
The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Elaine Cunnigham has truly outdone herself once again and has presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
She has done a FANTASTIC job of keeping a balance between what is suitable to young readers and what to adults! Subtle hints such as "Omnivore" Ferret/Amulet of underwater Breathing in the Mistress Penelope's Baths and Garvanell's "payment" is exactly what many of us fans out there who are now in our 30's would like to see more of-something a bit more spicy than the usual. From the moment you pick up the book you have trouble putting it down and if that is not a clear sign of a fantastic writer/author and a great plot, I don't know what is!
Elves, Zhents, assassins, Duty, honor, bravery, magic, and swordfights are all about. A great trilogy indeed with Elfsong and Elfshadow and a "must read" along with Evermeet! One should seriously start thinking about maybe turning them into movies... DON'T MISS IT!!!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written... Horribly Edited.......2003-08-20

This was an amazing book. Elaine Cunningham lets readers into Arilyn's complicated mind and the strange powers of the Moonblade become more apparent and it's demands worsen upon it's half-elven bearer. I enjoyed every page of this book, the plot, characters and setting were masterfully put on paper but...
You might wonder why I only gave 4 stars when this book's plot and characters are obviously 5-star material. While Elaine did an amazing job for this book whoever edited it did not. I am no english grammar whiz but still there were obvious mistakes that should never have been printed. For example, on one page a halflings name is Sandusk and on the next it is Suldusk. Also, the land which this tale takes place in is named Tethyr, it says so in the map in the front of the book but throughout the pages it is misspelled, one sentance it is Tethyr and on the next line (really!) it's spelled Tethir. I know these are just annoyances but that's it!
I enjoyed the premise and style of this book, I love the way Elaine Cunningham writes but I was thoroughly annoyed by the editorial mistakes.
A 5 star book
A 3 star editing job
Please overlook the bad editors and read what Elaine Cunningham is saying, it's a wonderful book, please read.

Elminster's Doom

It was the eve of the Time of Troubles. The chaos of spilled blood, lawless strife, monsters unleashed, and avatars roaming Faerûn was still to come. Unbeknownst to mortals, the gods had been summoned together, and among them was Mystra, grown proud and willful in the passing eons. With the others, she was about to be stripped of her godhood.

The secret of her power gave her an idea. She made certain preparations, looking always for one who would be her successor . . . But until that person's ascension, her power must be preserved.

A lone mortal must carry the greater share of her divine energy until the power could be reclaimed, and it was the fate of this mortal to risk being destroyed or driven wild, involuntarily and without warning.

This was the occaision of Elminster's Doom.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sharantyr..........2003-10-30

Sharantyr is the main reason to read this book. She's clever and feisty, and Faerun can use all the feisty sword-slinging women it can get. She's also in a few other books, but this is the one that introduces her (as far as I know).

1 out of 5 stars Terrible, even for Greenwood.......2002-08-11

Based on some of the other reviews, it looks like some people actually enjoy reading about Ed Greenwood's invincible characters. I find them predictably boring. It takes much more than mindless hack and slash to tell a story. Greenwood's vocabulary must be limited, since I see the same words repeated again and again <"rueful" sigh>.

4 out of 5 stars Swashbuckler Three.......1999-12-21

I really enjoyed this book, the characters were engaging, the story was good, and the descriptions were wonderful. Action and humor were the two words I'd most likely assign to this book, and in reality the whole series. The Two Harper Lads that travel with Sharantyr, youngest of the Knights of Myth Drannor, are just hilarious. I spent most of my time laughing, I think that's why it took me so long to finish. I recommend this series, especially if you're a fan of the realms. The only thing I found lacking, really, was the odds. Three rangers and Elminster versus that many Zhentilar? And El hardly casts because Magic is unstable? That's my only complaint.

3 out of 5 stars Very good starting Book for the Forgotten Realms.......1999-08-31

I too, believe it was a little overdone and the odds were definitely against them. However, it did a good job describing the places in the Realms as well as it provided the history of some of the characters and Gods, I.E. Mystra and Elminster. Overall, it was very enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Very good but a small amount over done........1999-08-28

The idea was very good, but the odds were a little bit bad. Probably the best parts were the Battle seens in High Dale.

5 out of 5 stars Sharantyr vs Malaugrym.......2003-10-30

Sharantyr, a recurring character in this series, and her friends, battle Malaugrym. Oh, other stuff happens, yes, but the most important and memorable parts are the Malaugrym.

This book was the first time I remember reading about these creatures, and I found them fascinating. The main characters actually invade the Malaugrym's home on whatever that other plane is that they live on, and have a suspense-filled time waltzing through a Malaugrym mansion. It is really quite entertaining.

1 out of 5 stars Make the Bad Man Stop!.......2001-08-28

Where's a good mage war when you need one? While Mr. Greenwood is a master of describing the intricacies of spell battles, his skills at characters development and human interaction are tragically underdeveloped. One gets the impression that every heroic character in his works has the same sophomoric, sarcastic sense of humor; the same selfless devotion to good causes (usually without any motivation); and the same overly sexualized past (read his books and you'll see what I mean) without any real follow-through in the present-day. The villains are even worse. I had to force myself to finish this book (nee trilogy) because I paid good money for it and I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't. Overall, this was a sadly disappointing work from an icon of game design. Please focus more on your strengths, Mr. Greenwood.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best..........2001-05-10

... not just of Greenwood's works, but just of Fantasy in general. The novel picks up directly where the last one left off, and flows without a hitch. The Rnagers Three return as the main heros of the novel, with Elminster and the Knights of Myth Drannor (all FR regulars) spiraling in to give life to Greenwoods infamous humor. (Check out the chapter "There's always revenge". that cracks me up every time i read it.) while the battle scenes (specificly the one for Mistledale) are rather unrealistic (70 v 7000, 70 win with maybe 20 casualties...) they are fun and very well crafted. The way that Greenwood lights from perspective to perspective draws the reader in, and the Maulaugrym provide entertaining and origional villians. THe trilogy was created to be a more perosnal look at the Time of Troubles (as opposed to the Avatar Trilogys wider world-based view) and the two complement eachother nicely, although Greenwood is the better of the three writters. I recomend this to everyone and anyone who enjoys FR and Fantasy novels.

2 out of 5 stars Leaves a lot to be desired.......2000-04-22

I really wanted to like this series of books because I think Ed Greenwood is an extremely creative writer (he'd have to be to create the entire Forgotten Realms setting), but I was completely disappointed. This series exemplifies the worst aspect of his writing. There were times when fifty pages would go by and I couldn't really think of one significant thing that happened to advance the plot. Over and over, a new enemy--one of the Malaugrym--is introduced, tries to kill Elminster or one of the other protagonists, and then ends up dying himself. It gets really old really quick. This entire series could have easily been fit into one novel instead of a trilogy. However, I will say that the best part about this series is the witty dialogue and the character of Elminster. There were many times when I actually laughed out loud. If Greenwood's brand of humor appeals to you, then this series may be worth checking out. Otherwise, I would suggest reading books that have better storylines, for example, Salvatore and Cunningham.

4 out of 5 stars A Magical Thrill ride.......1999-12-21

While the series isn't a literary smash, it is solid fun reading. The battles are well choreographed, despite the fact the good guys don't really look like they'll lose. This leads a lot of fans to despise the Zhentilar as push over baddies. However, Ed does return with his tongue in cheek humor, and the wonderful descriptive voice he uses. While not nearly a pulitzer quality book, it does a good job at being what it is...a fun adventure. I would like to note, that the book Elminster: Making of a Mage is a super jump after this one, as would be the Avater series. And lastly, when Mystra says "Elminster cannot last forever" at the end, Ed leaves you wide eyed at the possibility for "Elminster:The Death of a Mage", will it ever happen? Wait and see.

I really tried to get into this--but no romantic and too much dialog--too much description....I became impatience for the story....
A true shame!

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2006-02-27

I heard good things about this author, enjoy supernatural thrillers, and the storyline seemed interesting. Unfortunately the back of the book was better than the contents themselves. I plodded through the first quarter of the book and had to put it away. The characters weren't engaging and the dialogue dry and dull. I waited and waited for the pace to pick up, for something to happen to make me care about what happened to the characters. No dice.

I tried to pick it back up not too long ago, thinking maybe I just hadn't read far enough to get to the good parts. Well, I plodded along until I was about two-thirds of the way through before I gave up entirely. The idea was interesting, but in my opinion the author was sleepwriting when she wrote this. Not worth the cost, even in a discount store.

2 out of 5 stars Quite painful really.......2005-06-15

When the writing skills of Danielle Steel meet a pale imitation of Anne Rice universe. I am particularly upset, because despite the poor and boring style, I kind of hoped the storyline would unfold at some point. But it remains hopeless up to the final full stop. If you are older than 10, please avoid.

4 out of 5 stars Different.......2005-05-07

I've had some trouble finding out the order of the books in this series, I started with this one and found it different~ I usually read historical by SD but thought I'd try this since I had heard such bad reviews~ I enjoyed the characters and the different view she used~ Not all blood and gore~ I have also read by Anne Rice and found that from each perspective you see a different view of this subject~ I wonder if the previous books and later books of this series are so bad why do others keep reading this series????? I read the Savage series by Janelle Taylor and after the 4th book I stopped since the books were not about the same characters that her first book was on but their descendents~ So if you find that the story is heading in a direction you dislike pick up a different book~~~~~~

1 out of 5 stars A Heather Graham by any other name can't write any better........2004-09-22

Shaonnon Drake is the nom de plume of Heather Graham. Both are basically in the "bodice ripper" genre I guess. (Graham is the name for hardcovers and Drake for the paperbacks, it would appear).

This book was so bad I almost stopped at the "Prologe" in which the errors were almost laughable. The author's vision of WW-II combat seems to have come from watching the final battle in the movie Zulu one too many times.

From there I was able to wade as far a a slice of Chapter 2 where a combination of boredom and lack of interest in the plot overwhelmed me. I'm glad I just checked this out from the library, because I hate to think I would have spent money for it.

5 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Gem!.......2007-03-07

After several dull Realms adventures, this one proved interesting and fun! When this book was published in 1995, I passed over it thinking how bad the artwork on the cover was! I also thought this was about Dritzz child he left in the underdark. What a mistake! Times changed, as well as the cover art. I began this tale, savoring every page.

Liriel creeps out of the Underdark, and into my heart. She is humorous, curious and dangerous. This is not a rewrite of the original tale of Dritzz, who was aready good, yet trapped in an evil society. Liriel demonstrates many of the evil traits expected of a Drow. Curiosity gets the best of her and catapults her to the surface world. There she meets up with Fyodor, a Rashemi. Trust me, its not an easy partnership.

This story was published when old TSR was at its peak. Hardcovers were being cranked out as well as up to 3 Forgotten Realms titles a month! Quantity, not quality was the problem. Other than a few editing problems, this is written very well. Elaine is in the top 3 of Realms authors, with a distinct feel for the setting, and a potential for liturature! Ironic, despite the fact that the entire series get critically dismissed as being pulpy rubbish.

I have been buying these titles since they went to press in 1987. There have been some really good reads and some stinkers. I have passed up on Harry Potter and its best seller status. These titles are not aimed at a specific audience(young readers). For the most part, these fantasies can be read by anyone 12 or older. The Realms is still a really cool place for me, and always will be as long as really fun reads like this are published!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you love Drizzt you'll go ape for Liriel!.......2006-07-20

This is a great twist/turn on the Drizzt series, but this time it's a GIRL! Wonderful book all the way through to book 3. Must get, must buy!!

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-05-07

I personally loved this book. The only reason I rated it as a four star book was because the first few pages were hard to follow. The beginning, and I mean in the VERY beginning, there is a lot of characters to be introduced. I had to do a bit of back skimming to remember them, but it worked out fine. Its easily followed as soon as you get out of the first few pages of the book. i love the idea of a rebel drow, one who dreams and aspires to have adventure. Liriel is a dynamic character who loves to party, but still has ruthless drow qualities. Fyodor is a simple human feeling simple feelings for this Drow girl, even though he knows the drow are ruthless beings. I highly recommend this book for someone who is patient and can follow a plot. you will get into the very heart of the book and hardly want to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing........2005-04-10

After years of reading books that simply scream, "Happy, Happy!! Joy, Joy!!" I picked up this book simply because I saw there was a lot of other books that said, "Forgotten Realms," and it seemed to be the first in a series. After reading the first few pages I was in awe. The first pages, describing the Underdark is the best description I have ever read. It slaughters anything written by any other author, including Rowling and Tolkien. The complexity of the characters is astounding. The plot is exciting, and original. This is simply the best book ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2004-07-21

This book was my introduction to the Forgotten Realms and I am glad it was! This story, as well as Tangled Webs and Windwalker, were a great start for me for this setting as well as this genre of writing. Liriel is a neat character, and it is a pleasure to watch her develop throughout this series.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Beyond bad.......2007-04-01

This is the least satisfying conclusion of a trilogy I have ever read. Poorly written with a jumbled plot that was impossible to follow. New characters randomly introduced far too often and not enough development of the characters that I cared about. Many of the plot developments were completely unnecessary and very unsatisfying. I wish I hadn't read this book so that I could have imagined a more satisfying conclusion to the tale.

3 out of 5 stars Main characters not in it as much..........2006-09-10

About 3/4 of the way through this book, I realized that the two main characters had barely been in it! Some new faces and old foes (plus a link to the War of the Spider Queen series) almost take the main stage. While it didn't feel like the stories of the secondary characters were tacked on, if the book had just featured Liriel and Fyodor it would have been much, much shorter. It wasn't bad, but as far as it being the last book in a trilogy, I would've expect more.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing, to say the least.......2006-09-08

I wasn't overly disappointed in the plot or the characters, despite their inconsistency. It was the writing. This book reads like it was written in about a week. It was rushed, jumbled, and had no depth.

The main story really could have been told in about 150-200 pages. The rest seemed like it was just unnecessary, uninteresting filler. Too many pages were devoted to secondary characters doing nothing that advanced the story, or even helped develop the character or plot. It's as if it was all written on the fly with no forethought or, even worse, afterthought. It reads like it went right from rough draft to release. I really expected more from Elaine Cunningham.

This is a 3 of 3 book so people will naturally buy it, but don't expect to see the effort put forth you saw in book 1.

If you're a big Liriel fan go get it and get your fix. If you're looking for the layers and intrigue of a good drow book, move on. You're going to be sorely disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, Book 3!.......2006-07-20

Not as strong as the first two books, but if you already bought the first two, might as well complete the series and buy book 3! Don't get me wrong, it isn't terrible!! But do know that if you don't get it, you'll miss out on the surprise ending that you never saw coming, or at least I didn't see it coming!! You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Fitting conclusion to Starligth & Shadows.......2006-03-23

When I read the other reviews about this book, I realize that the ratings cover the whole range from one to five stars. I also realize why this is the case... But starting at the beginning:
I liked Windwalker very much. It took me some time to get my hands on the paperback version, so my reading of the first two parts was a few years back and I started out rereading Tangled Webs to get into the story again. And Mrs Cunningham picked up exactly where she left off, with fast paced action and the characters I've so grown to like, adding two more characters (Sharlarra and Thorn) who might merit novels of their own.
I also enjoyed the part of the story spent on examining the relationship between Liriel and her former patron godess Lolth. I think no other realms author has so far gone into this much detail about a priestess forsaking her godess.
The far reaching effects Liriel's carving of the rune had on all the drow were an interesting twist, though I'd have liked it even better if there had been some explanation as to why the change was so far reaching. Also I'd expect such a change to be taken up in other novels as well, though so far I haven't noticed anything in other novels (I haven't read the War of the Spider Queen series yet, though...)
I can see why some might be put off by the book though:
The ending is a bit unusual, both in the swiftness of the final battle and in the death of a main character. For my part, I found it refreshing to read a final battle where there isn't a Phyrrus victory at the end, but a clear and decisive one. Many FR authors seem to go on the basis, that if there haven't been dozens (or hundreds - depending on the scope of the novel) deaths, the enemies were not threatening enough. Also the death of Fyodor, though sad, was somehow fitting and a good conclusion to the series. Having recently read Hand of Fire - one of the worst FR-novels in my opinion - Windwalker was a breath of fresh air.
I didn't miss the final showdown between Liriel and Shakti. The way it went added a surprising twist to Shakti's character and anyway, a spellbattle would have been ridiculous considering that moments before Liriel had no spells left to fling at Gorlist.
All that said, I still have some peeves about this book. For one, the book could have done without some of the cameos Qilué, Laeral, Sylune and Khelben were part of the story, but putting in Dove, Alustriel and the other seven was in no way related to the story.
Even Danilo - much as I like him and enjoyed Sahrlarra's fight with his sword - didn't add much to the story.
Someone mentioned the misspellings of some canon names before (Laerel instead of Laeral). Suchlike simply should not happen!
Finally I think the death of Quilué's lover is a bit of a retcon, as I think he was alive at the end of DotD.
I'm looking forward to the next novel by Mrs Cunningham, though I strongly suspect it won't be about Liriel...

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining stories out way the time-wasters.......2002-10-20

This book provides an entertaining read even with the occasional poor story thrown in. The Theme of the book is interesting and several of the stories more than do it justice. The story by Paul Kemp was exceptionally entertaining, and the Lisa Smedman story was also very good. Salvatore's characters are always interesting and, although short, his story was a fun read. There are several others that make the book worth purchasing also, just accept that there will be some stories that will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. This book does prime the pump of interest in the return of the Shadovar adequately to make this an anticipated FR event.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2002-07-26

Unlike the other reviewers, I found this particular collection to range from truly awful to good; there is nothing spectacular here, though. Troy Denning, an FR author I usually enjoy quite a bit (and whose first two books in this particular series are excellent), delivers a plodding, predictable story that degenerates into standard fantasy fiction stereotypes without any significant characterisation. This is atypical for Denning, and for this reason I am likely more disappointed than I might have been had another author penned the tale. Salvatore and Cunningham, as usual, deliver satisfying tales with memorable characters. Jessica Beaven is, to me at least, a new contributor. In my opinion, this should be her last attempt. Her tale was disjointed, stylistically pretentious and without any storytelling merit whatsoever. While this may tide one over between "The Siege" and the forthcoming "The Sorcerer," it would be best to not bring too much hope for an overall satisfying FR experience with this particular anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant anthology.......2002-05-13

From Lisa Smedman's Netherese mystery tale to Peter Archer's Indiana Jones-esque reprise of a character from Realms of Mystery, Realms of Shadow offers a nifty tie-in which stands effectively apart from the polarizing Return of the Archwizards trilogy (personally I like the trilogy a lot, but plenty of you don't -- do not let that discourage you from buying this anthology). I particularly like Paul Kemp's story (watching this guy. He's going to be Salvatore-big some day), Elaine Cunningham's comedy and Richard Lee Byers' adventure tale set in the ruins of Tilverton. Ed Greenwood's story sets some kind of "sets of villains in one story" record with four - phaerimm, malaugrym, shades and Bleth/Cormaeril renegade Cormyrians.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2002-04-13

I thought this book was very good. I do not ususally read anthologies, but I like reading about the Shadovar. I think most of the stories are worth the five stars, but some are pretty depressing. I recommend that you buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars from me too.......2002-04-11

This Anthology was very well done and really helps add to the current crisis presented by the return of Shade Enclave in the Forgotten Realms. From front to back, the stories were arranged chronologically beginning with the first one which takes place before the fall of Netheril in -470 DR and ending in the current Realms year, 1372 DR I believe it is. About half of the stories are set in the current time period, while the other stories lend a little background emphasis on Shade Enclave's past. Very nice planning. This should definitely wet your whistle while you await the 3rd volume of the Return of the Archwizards trilogy set to come out later this year.

But even far from the dark haunts of Menzoberranzan, she is not safe from the vengeance of her archenemy. Even as she and her friend sail the dangerous seas of the Sword Coast, a drow priestess plots a terrible fate for them.

And in the depths of the earth, the spider queen Lolth weaves her own webs of terror and treachery.

This rerelease showcases a new look for the Starlight & Shadows series, complete with all new cover art and design. The recover of this title precedes a brand-new concluding title to the series, Windwalker.

5 out of 5 stars Get ready for Book 2!!.......2006-07-20

Like I said before for book 1: this is a great twist to the Drizzt series and a must buy and read!!!

4 out of 5 stars Almost as good as the first.......2004-09-03

I like this book a lot, but I felt it lacking the normal action I would expect from a good Drow book. I understand that Liriel was trying to become a force of good/light, but I prefer the more "evil" Drow concept. However the book was satifying and I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Good continuation.......2004-01-28

This was a good continuation the story, though a background in sword coast geography and rivalries might be helpful it was not really needed.

The story at sea and later on the island of Ruathym had a lot of twists and turns and was a page turner.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant read that takes you away!.......2003-10-03

Following on the footsteps of Daughter of the Drow, Cunningham brings our favourite mischeivous drow back in all her elven glory. Truly, I have never found anyone who writes elves as well as Cunningham. The dark elves, or drow, are by far the most difficult to write. Yet Cunningham pulls it off with brilliance! Liriel continues on with Fyodor to solve some mysteries and bring her adorable impish charm into our hearts and minds. Again, I rave about Cunningham's talent in bringing her characters to life. Few authors pull this off as well as she does. You simply can't stop reading!

1 out of 5 stars Nothing to see here........2003-09-10

Ug. I just finished reading this book less than 5 minutes ago and I feel like I need to hurry up and write my summary because this is a book I don't care to remember. Maybe some people like books where you need to take notes and draw maps and flowcharts all throughout your reading so you can keep track of the story, but I'm not one of those people. And in this book it hardly mattered anyway because virtually none of the characters had any reason for existing. They are just there to hopefully draw your attention away from the fact that everything between the first chapter and the last chapter was just filler space.

Too many characters, none of which where particularly interesting or memorable. Even the main characters where rather bland and uninteresting. The book is a jumbled mess of countless sub plots and meaningless reading. The entire 370 page book could be rewritten in twenty pages and you wouldn't really be missing anything that mattered.

Is it just me or did 90% of these characters seem to exist only to make sure the book was over the 300 page mark? "Hi - I'm here. I have no reason for appearing in this book. But I'll stick around for 5 or 10 pages and then dissapear. And in about 50 or 75 pages from now, I'll show up again only to be killed and you'll be left wondering why I was ever in the story to begin with."

To the people that liked this book. I'm very sorry that my attitude about this book is so, well, childish I guess. But that's how I feel about it.
