Book Description
With a little imagination and creativity--and without hiring a professional--almost anyone can transform a small living space into a comfortable and stylish environment. Whether decorating a dorm room, an apartment, or a little cottage, what we strive for is a look and feel that expresses our individual personalities. Part style guide, part idea sourcebook, this handy volume--designed to meet the needs of real people with real budgets--is packed with smart ideas, basic design principles, and enough inspiration to get you off the sofa to make it happen.
In her lively, informative text, design guru Marisa Bartolucci takes readers inside 33 small homes from cities across the U.S. to reveal how a strong sense of style--rather than design know-how or unlimited resources--is the most effective tool for transforming an ordinary cramped living space into a smart yet functional private sanctuary.

Lots of inspiration.......2007-09-22
Love the way the book shows apartments of varying small sizes and multiple solutions for small-space dilemmas (like little room for sleeping, tiny kitchens). I was able to brainstorm a solution for my own apartment after one look through this book.
My only complaint is that there are no product resources listed--just designers' names and contact information.
Fabulousity on a budget.......2007-06-01
Well, I guess I'll add my voice to the chorus of reviewers for this book:
This is a jewel of a book. Lots of fabulous examples of small spaces with a lot of character. People who love art, collect books and appreciate unexpected decorating ideas will enjoy this book."
A lovely book that could use a bit of fine-tuning to best serve its intended readership.......2007-04-06
I really liked this book, but it only gets 4 out of 5 stars because I think the definition of "small spaces" is too broad. This book would be better if it showcased twice as many spaces from 100-600sqf, rather than going all the way up to 1000. Maybe for people who don't live in cities, 1000sqf is tiny, but I think a lot of the book's target audience would find that amount of space to be truly palatial. Many of the larger spaces had yards or terraces, sometimes doubling the real amount of living space, so that feels like a "cheat" to me. I got the most ideas out of the first half of the book, and the rest of the book was enjoyable as a general interior design book rather than a "small spaces" design book. Many of the featured homes' remodels involve knocking out walls and really re-working a space, so if you're a renter looking for what you can do with a small space you don't own, you might be disappointed. All in all, a very nice book with wonderful photographs, I just wish there was a greater focus on spaces under 600sqf, and more creative rentals being showcased for readers who are renters.
Really small spaces!.......2007-03-26
A small but pretty coffee table book with great content and some good ideas for living in tiny, tiny spaces.
1) 16 of the 33 profiled spaces were 500 sq ft or less! The other 17 were 600 - 1000 sq ft in size. I haven't seen many books on small space living that focus on this size range. Most books seem to present 2000 sqft houses as tiny.
2) The owners of these spaces didn't all have an unlimited budget. Many were in rentals so gut renovations, moving walls, etc was not an option. Many did have expensive or design worthy furniture and art but quite a few were heavily furnished with IKEA and thrift store finds.
3) Most of the owners had to be very carefull with clutter and picking pieces that would work in the space and that they really loved. Some of the other Amazon reviews found this to be somewhat unrealistic but I think that when you live in such small spaces, you are going to have to keep things very neat and tidy.
4) Part of the title is "expressing personal style". There is plenty of that in the book mostly clustered around what I'll call "modern" (eams etc), "drama" (red, red everywhere), "eclectic" (high design items mixed with garage sale items) and "standard" (danish). Many of the owners have extensive collections that are well presented and show off their unique personal style.
5) Most of these places are inhabited by: architects, artists, interior decorators, makeup artists, writers, curators, floral designers, etc. Essentially those who are in the "profession". I got the impression that hiring someone is de rigur if you are an accountant or fireman.
6) I liked the organization of the book by size of the space, architectural diagram of the space, lots of well shot photos, a narrative of who the residents are and how the space came to be and a picture of the residents.
7) One of my favorites were Francisco Parod and Ximena Orozco, the couple from Mexico living in a 450sqft NY apartment...with a baby! Not only did it look comfortable and open, they furnished almost everything at IKEA. My other favorite was Karen Meyer. She had translucent screens that could slide between the living room and dining room. This provided flexibility to the spaces by making it more expansive or more private, as needed. A murphy bed that was behind a shelf unit in the dining room could be opened up to create a guest room. A nice example of rooms doing double duty.
All in all, the best book I've found for realistic ideas for very small spaces.
Living Large in Small Spaces.......2007-03-19
Although I was not overwhelmed with inspiration, I liked the set-up of this book. The spaces are grouped by square footage complete with pictures of all areas of the space and a floor plan so that you can visualize how the spaces fit together. I also liked the fact that there were various design styles. However, I could not visualize myself living in the majority of the spaces displayed in this book. The majority of the homes displayed were homes of designers and artists. Since I myself am not a designer or an artist, I could and would not begin to design like what was displayed in this book.

When Rita Golden Gelman traveled to Mexico during a two-month separation from her husband, she hoped to satisfy an old craving for adventure and, in the process, rejuvenate herself and her marriage. Little did she know it was the beginning of a new life, not just as a divorcée, but as a nomad of the world. Since 1986, Gelman has had no permanent address and no possessions except those she can carry. She travels without a plan, guided by instinct, serendipitous opportunities, and a remarkable ability to connect with people. At first her family and friends accused her of running away, but Gelman knew she had embarked on a journey of self-discovery and a way of life that is inspiring and enviable.
We know Gelman is not your typical middle-aged housewife from LA when, on that first trip to Mexico, she randomly picks a Zapotec village and decides to live there for a month, knowing nothing about the culture or the language. When she arrives, the villagers run away from her, terrified. By the time she leaves, there are hugs and tears. From there she travels to Guatemala and Nicaragua, Israel and the Galapagos Islands. But the heart of the book--and her 15-year journey--is Indonesia, where she lives for eight years. It is Bali that forever changes how she looks at the world, facilitated by her friendship with an aging prince. Tu Aji not only invites her to live with his family but decides that the education of Rita will be his final duty in life. Wherever she goes, Gelman has an uncanny ability to slip into other ways of life and become part of a community. And she is a person for whom doors open widely--her seatmate on the plane to Bali scrawls the prince's name on a piece of paper, she talks her way into a sojourn at Camp Leakey in Borneo where orangutans are studied, and an entire village in a remote part of Irian Jaya prays for the clouds to clear so her plane can land--and they do! Gelmen's secret is her passion for people. That being the case, the book is short on descriptions of place, but long on the rarer inside view of the peoples and customs of those places. This in itself is treat enough, but Gelman's animated and intimate story comes with a kicker--it's never too late to fulfill those dreams. --Lesley Reed
Book Description
“I move throughout the world without a plan, guided by instinct, connecting through trust, and constantly watching for serendipitous opportunities.” —From the Preface
Tales of a Female Nomad is the story of Rita Golden Gelman, an ordinary woman who is living an extraordinary existence. At the age of forty-eight, on the verge of a divorce, Rita left an elegant life in L.A. to follow her dream of connecting with people in cultures all over the world. In 1986 she sold her possessions and became a nomad, living in a Zapotec village in Mexico, sleeping with sea lions on the Galapagos Islands, and residing everywhere from thatched huts to regal palaces. She has observed orangutans in the rain forest of Borneo, visited trance healers and dens of black magic, and cooked with women on fires all over the world. Rita’s example encourages us all to dust off our dreams and rediscover the joy, the exuberance, and the hidden spirit that so many of us bury when we become adults.

This is a wonderful book to learn about traveling alone throughout the world. The author's courage to wander and met people is inspiring. The book is interesting and easy to read.
A definite recommended read.
feets - don't fail me now..........2007-09-17
If you've ever wanted to grab your back pack and just head for parts unknown, this book is the kick in the *** you need. The copy I just purchased is the 11th one - I give this book to every woman I know and they all tell me they have passed it on and bought another for themselves. A gem, a treasure, a wonderful companion, Rita Gelman's delightful account of (some of!) her adventures is a tonic. It made me realize that I am not the only one who dreams - and that others make their dreams come true. Read it, savor it and pass it on. In her highly personal tale Ms. Gelman speaks for many of us. The Garden Club: An Althea Grey Mystery
Tales of a Female Nomad.......2007-09-03
Rita Golden Gelman is an inspiration to all women world travelers.I can't imagine anyone reading this book and not wanting to catch the next plane to adventure and self discovery.
Inspiring and Heart Warming.......2007-07-27
I cried when I finished Tales of a Female Nomad. I think it was because I didn't want it to be over!
I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of Rita's adventures around the globe; from her first evening in Mexico, in which she is fearful to eat alone, to her complete transformation in the last chapter in which she is living in a Thai village, unable to communicate in the local language but heartily helping to prepare meals with her hosts.
I am an experienced traveler and thought that I knew a lot about Globetrotting. But having now read Rita's book, I realize there is so much more depth to be had, not only in my travels but in my every day life.
I dispute the claims that this book is self-indulgent, self-congratulatory or dishonest. Rather, Rita makes a point of giving back at every opportunity. The one instance in which she feels she may be forcing her ideals on the locals, she promptly removes herself from the situation, recognizing that she is an observer and must not try to change others. She is completely honest about her experiences and, over time, she learns to dive in to every situation without hesitation and with all of her heart.
I have a list of women friends that I can't wait to buy additional copies for!
Tales of aFemale Nomad.......2007-07-07
Written with honesty and clarity, Tales of a Female Nomad shows that when a person is true to themselves, the world opens up. Fantastic description of cultures and the individuals within those cultures. A brave and fulfilling journey.

simple the best bible on the market for a new believer especially. the price at amazon is unbeatable.
Great translation and study aids.......2007-07-09
I probably have over a dozen Bibles and none are as good as this one. I love the "New Living Translation" it make reading the Bible more understandable and removes the ambiguity which many translations have. The thumb indexes are great for looking up references and the large print makes reading the text easier for those of us who need reading glassed. My only complaint is that the "Life Application" notes are not in large print and requires reading glasses where the Bible text is large enough to read without them. I would recommend this bible to anyone who need a large print Bible. For those of you who don't need the large print can get this same Bible with normal type. I love this Bible and you would too.
Great Bible.......2007-06-15
This is the NLT2 in Large Print, Black Bonded Leather. Now remember, when you buy this Bible it is no little object. It is over 3100 pages and probably over 4 pounds as well. The print is much, much easier to read than on the normative Life App Bibles. I was hoping this edition would become available in the Tu-Tone leathers(which are soft and beautiful), but evidently there are no plans for such, so the binding is the typical stiff, rough-feeling bonded leather. The print is great, the notes are, too, and it is one very acceptable accurate translation that is easy to read and understand. Enjoy.
Great readability!.......2007-06-14
The New Living Translation is highly readable and this version, with thumb tabs and large print, greatly enhances that attribute. It is perfect for older readers and those new to the bible.
Bible for preachers and laymen.......2007-03-14
The print, the paper, the binding, the colored covers, and everything from cover to cover is excellent. It has been very useful for my wife and for me as we both use it for our preachings particularly during these lenten days.It is a gift from above.

Book Description
Can you really feel better as you get older?
Is aging without illness possible?
Is your own internal fountain of youth waiting to be discovered?
Yes, yes, and YES! says Suzanne Somers, the bestselling author of The Sexy Years. It can all be true when you take advantage of the new science of antiaging medicine—a revolutionary approach to achieving the ageless life.
Suzanne Somers introduced millions of women to bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and changed the way we look at menopause with her groundbreaking book, The Sexy Years, and the overwhelming media response to its publication. Now, in Ageless, Suzanne introduces an inspiring, medically validated approach to reversing the aging process and maintaining a healthy, vibrant, mentally sharp, sexually active life—while building the body’s natural defenses against age-related diseases.
Ageless is jam-packed with new, updated information on bioidentical hormone replacement and antiaging that will change your life forever. Suzanne talks about:
• Antiaging medicine and how it can help work against the environmental assault that is making us sick, including how to detox the body of harmful pollutants and chemicals and strengthen our weakest glands and organs
• Menopause, which can become an enjoyable passage once the body is in perfect hormonal sync with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy
• The dangers of perimenopause and how women can treat it
• Why so many hysterectomies are unnecessary, how birth control pills may have contributed to the rise of hysterectomies, and how to restore your body to perfect hormonal balance after having one
• How andropause is a real condition for men, and how men can lose weight, regain their youthful physiques, and restore heath, energy, and sexuality, all through bioidentical HRT
• The importance of sleep and the healing work that nature does during this time to balance hormones and increase energy
In this “antiaging bible,” Suzanne brings together prominent, Western-trained antiaging doctors who are at the forefront of a medical revolution to show how the traditional medical approach is woefully inadequate and outdated. Its standard of care has been to treat all symptoms with drugs, but in Ageless you will find out how this approach does not make us better. With antiaging medicine you can heal your body rather than keep a chronic condition at bay with drugs. Ageless shows you how to keep your “insides” young, and how this manifests on the outside.
What could be better than having your doctor tell you that you have the bones of a twenty-year-old, or the heart of a thirty-year-old? You can be young on the inside if you follow the advice in Ageless. Suzanne reveals the secrets to youthfulness that everyone can achieve and shows us all how to live the ageless life!

Amazing.......2007-09-27
This book is an amazing, indepth and comprehensive look at what can be done for both men and women who suffer from hormone imbalance. I am so greatful to my sister for encouraging me to read the book. "Help is on the way."
She's got more doctor interviews and more up to date information in this latest BHRT bible.......2007-09-06
The title of this book prompts a disclaimer. The word Ageless is clearly an attention getter used to sell books. The definition is "not affected by time or age." In no way do I believe there are as yet any lotions, potions or cutting edge docs who can prevent the aging process.
What I do believe is that we can make use of the latest research to support our bodies to fight off the diseases and complaints of aging. So does the author.
Now on to the book.
Suzanne Somers has pulled together an enormous amount of research and features interviews with sixteen practitioners with different but sometimes overlapping specialties. What we end up with are the key components of healing what ails you now and preventing what lurks in the future.
"I believe it is possible to experience aging without illness, which is the big dream for all of us. We don't fear getting older; we fear getting sick, really sick" says Ms. Somers.
Yes Suzanne is a Bio-Identical Hormone replacement (BHRT) zealot. She is a well educated one and someone who lives what she preaches. Her life is vastly improved through the concepts proposed--detox, healthy lifestyle, sleep!, and BHRT for women and men.
Lest you don't know her story she is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed when she was already well into feeling better than ever through her hormone replacement choices and refused to give them up during her treatment. Bold yes, some might say stupid, but her decision served her.
I mention that bit to get you past the misconception that bio-identical hormone replacement causes to cancer. It does not. The reasons are complex and too long to go into here. Get the book. It speaks to this specifically.
So what can bio-identical hormones do for us? They can turn off, or slow down, the "time to die" signals. Hormones keep us strong and healthy when we are younger so we can breed and care for our young and ensure the success of future generations by doing so. Once we are done with that whole process our hormones start to dry up and the signal that sends to the body is, "time to go, you are no longer a productive."
That's the simplified Greg-speak version. The big point is when hormones decline or are out of balance we are susceptible to the diseases associated with aging. These include Alzheimer's, cancer, and heart disease. Dr. Robert Greene of Specialty Care for Women in Redding, CA has this to say, "Take Alzheimer's disease, for example. Several studies done on both men and women show if someone has an estradiol level of less than 20 pg/mL, they are at highest risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and cognitive disturbances." And we wouldn't want to prevent that why?
It's not just the hormonal decline that's responsible for our poor health and disease rates it's also the toxins we ingest. Exogenous (foreign essentially) hormones--found in dairy products, birth control, and in some instances the water supply-- are toxic since they are not made in our bodies and are said to be responsible for the increase in reproductive organ cancers such as breast, testicular and cervical.
Add to this the toxic load we ingest daily in the form of pesticides, plastics, creams laden with non-cancer causing but non-the-less disturbing chemicals and our bodies begin to break down under the weight. The burden of toxicity causes fatigue, aches, pains, and upsets and we call that "normal for someone my age."
Detox is a big part of the The Ageless prescription for wellbeing.
Sleep is another biggy in this book; an underrated "miracle cure." Sound sleep is hard to come by when your hormones are out of whack though. During deepest sleep our body does its repair work and pumps out restorative hormones. No stages of deep sleep and health decline is inevitable.
This book is far more comprehensive than her first visit to the BHRT world, The Sexy Years. Medicine moves at the speed of light and since her first book there have been many studies, clinical trials come to term, and women with stories of success to draw from. But stories don't guarantee safety and this book backs up all of the successes with science.
If you are currently a woman of a certain age, even if you are "too young" to think about hormone replacement--and if you have PMS, PCO, or other "female" malady you are not too young--you might want to use this book as a primer. Learn what is preventable and then you can figure out how you want to go about preventing it. Or not. It's obviously a personal thing.
Long term care is expensive, far more so than a book with practical information that you can implement now. Ignorance is also expensive. Give yourself the inexpensive gift of an open mind and you just might want to spend some of that insurance money on making your wildest dreams come true.
One of best Anti-Aging books, written for laymen.......2007-06-24
I learned considerable new anti-aging information, from Ageless, although I have read numerous books on this topic. I suspect most physicians would also learn some new information, from this book, which was written, in 2006.
Ageless, contains an abundance of leading edge medical knowledge concerning estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, DHEA, melatonin, and human growth hormone replacement, breast cancer risks and treatment. Suzanne Somers survived breast cancer and continued on biodentical hormone replacement, while declining chemotherapy. She has researched hormone replacement far more thoroughly, than the "medical reporters," who have dominated media coverage of hormone replacement, with unbalanced, over-sensationalized, misleading articles. I have heard Suzanne Somers speak and she is dynamic, fluid, articulate, knowledgeable, humorous and inspiring.
I was especially impressed with the interviews of T S Wiley and Julie Taguchi, MD. Suzanne Somers conveyed the cancer reduction benefits of extended breast feeding, early and multiple pregnancy more clearly, than Sex, Lies and Menopause. The evidence demonstrating hormone replacement reduced breast cancer deaths thirty percent, while decreasing inflammation, deserves wider publicity.
Some of the physicians interviewed propose monthly cycling of progesterone and estrogen, citing research that monthly cycling, imitating the monthly menstrual period results in beneficial up-regulation of estrogen receptors.
Florida Detox clinical experience verifies bioidentical hormone replacement can produce dramatic reductions of depression, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, migraine and interstitial cystitis. Many chemical dependency relapses are driven by hormonal deficiencies.
Suzanne Somers addresses the strange irony, that many people refuse treatment with safe, natural biodentical hormones, stating it is unnatural to avoid hormonal decline, with aging. Despite their refusal to accept natural hormone replacement therapy, these increasingly unhealthy individuals, willingly accept blood pressure, cholesterol, pain, insomnia and antidepressant medication, angioplasty, coronary bypass, and artificial joint replacement. Natural hormone replacement can reduce or eliminate the need for these medications and surgeries.
The conversational style of the interviews creates a very readable discussion of anti-aging medicine. Although Ageless does not contain many research citations, The Menopause Clinics of America website, http://www.replacehrt.com/research.shtml. contains many abstracts and citations of published, peer reviewed research, including many of the studies, discussed in Ageless.
This book also contains many very clever, funny jokes, regarding aging.
I did detect an apparent typo, where testosterone was said to decrease hemoglobin. Many excellent, books have at least one typo error and indeed it seems almost inevitable, that a lengthy book will contain one. Despite this apparent error, I feel this book easily deserves five stars.
A frequent complaint, in previous reviews of this book, concerns the expense of bioidentical hormone replacement. Suzanne Somers helped found the Menopause Clinics of America, which are already located, in many states and plan to be nationwide. I have previously recommended the Menopause Clinics of America, in Denver, CO, and am impressed with the quality of care provided. Their fees, testing and prescription costs are very reasonable and their staff is very knowledgeable and patient oriented.

second only to my bible!.......2007-05-13
i found out about this book through some research on anti-aging medicine. it was highly recommended by the american college of anti-aging medicine website. it is very informative and i highly recommend it!
Good Basic Information.......2007-05-13
I have found all of Suzanne Somers books, especially thoses about bioidentical hormones to be honest and informative. Regardless of what you may think about her, the books on diet, exercise, and bioidentical hormones are no worse or better than anything else out there. I did take her advice and went to my primary care physician and told him I wanted off the HRT and wanted to use the bioidentical hormones in the dosages recommended by the Dr.'s interviewed by Somers. I have felt so much better that I have regreted I did not read her books sooner. I have struggled with menopause symptoms for years even when on Premrin. The bioidentical hormones have made me feel more like my old self. If you are on HRT read the "Sexy Years" and "Ageless" I would recommend both highly.
Book Description
How to make more of less-the book that shows how to simplify your life, control clutter, and pare down your possessions for a move into smaller living quarters. There are plenty of anti-clutter experts around ready to exhort us to sort, store, and trash our belongings, but this is the first book to address the specific needs of people moving from a larger to a smaller space, or merging two (or more) people's possessions into a single abode. If you and your mate are about to swap your large, single-family house for a condo, or move your parents out of the family home of 40 years into an assisted-living center, where do you start? How do you decide what to take, what to leave behind, and what to do with your discards? What can you do to keep the move from seeming tinged with loss?Scaling Down not only offers terrific nuts-and-bolts strategies for paring down one's belongings to only the best and most meaningful items, but it also addresses the emotional aspects of streamlining-the complicated relationship we have with our "stuff." Countering the pervasive American prejudice that having less is a step down, the authors advance their concept of "living large wherever you are!"
Customer Reviews:
great, practical book.......2007-09-24
It took me less than a week to read this book and gave me a lot of really good ideas, even about things unrelated to the topic. Highly recommended if you are having to move, if you are dealing with an estate situation or if you just need to simplify your life!
Best decluttering book for my situation.......2007-05-25
While this book is about getting rid of clutter, it stands out from similar books because it focuses on positive reasons to get rid of extra stuff, such as moving to a smaller, more manageable home. I have read many books about clutter. Most of them are either really about finding suitable containers for stuff, or about getting rid of stuff for very vague, intangible reasons ("your clutter is weighing you down" sort of new-age reasoning).
We are moving from a 4000-square-foot house to one 1400 square feet or smaller in order to save money and conserve energy. This book is the first one that has inspired me to be tough in paring down our stuff to the point where we won't be squashing it into our new place. It has also given me clear steps on how to do this.
Like another reviewer, I really wish this book had a section on choosing which children's items to get rid of, or how to cope with a spouse who is reluctant to declutter. (This is the reason I'm giving the book four stars rather than five.) However, the lessons I learned by reading the book (such as skimming the cream off the top--choosing the best items in any category and getting rid of the rest) will be helpful in the first area. As for the second, well, maybe I can get my husband to read this.
Practical Approach to Residential Downsizing.......2007-05-08
Although this book is aimed at baby boomers who are down sizing, it is full of simple, practical suggestions for a myriad of situations. Not only do the authors deal with the physical stuff but they also deal with the emotional side of the letting go. In addition to having some great cartoons, the book is written in a conversational tone and with a great deal of humor as exemplified by a chapter entitled "The Secret Life of Clothing".
SCALING down is divided into five parts. In Part 1, the Challenges of Scaling Down, the authors discuss the nature of clutter including a quiz entitled "How Stuffed Are You?" They then present their approach, which is to develop with the client a simple mission statement that includes obstacles, as in "I need (or want) to _________________ but _____________. They then present 21 obstacles, excuses and fears and provide suggestions on helping the client past each of them.
In Part 2, "The Culprits", the authors deal with the major issues of paper, clothing, gifts and what they call the `tyranny' of collections'. A simple filing system is suggested for a more simple lifestyle. Judi & Marj discuss how to help a recent retiree pare down "the physical evidence of a lifetime of work" in a compassionate and respectful manner. Since guilt is usually associated with getting rid of items that were gifts from others, the authors present options for getting past the guilt. They analyze the `why' of collecting and suggest ways to lead the client to the `better' not `bigger' collection.
Special Situations are dealt with in Part 3. The task of clearing out a family home covers numerous issues from family dynamics and old hurts to allowing enough time and getting items successfully distributed to their intended new homes. In the chapter called "Your Cuisinart or Mine?", the authors deal with blending households as well as separating households. As in other Parts, Marj and Judi deal not only with the physical stuff but also handling the emotional issues involved in these emotionally charged situations.
Although the Part 4 Scaling Down Strategies, such as skimming and triage, are pretty familiar, they also discuss the psychology of shopping. Additionally there is a whole chapter dedicated to helping clients cull through their life's memorabilia and enable the client to keep only that which is truly significant to their lives. They also provide a list of 28 techniques to prevent the return of clutter.
The final part of the book deals with the rewards of living in a smaller space and emphasizes the avoidance of the bigger is better mentality that surrounds us in today's culture. Their definition of what a home should be sums it up. "Your own home...is a backdrop to help your life flow smoothly and provide comfort and self-expression---not be an end in itself."
Excellent without children, but..........2006-12-13
I really enjoyed this book, having ready lot about simplicity. However, the end about living simple, doesn't apply to family with children. So if you are a couple or an empty nester, it's the best book on living simpily I have read. Otherwise, find a supplement for the REST of us with kids.
Downsizing your home.......2006-11-01
This is a GREAT book if you're planning on moving into a smaller space. It really helps you organize your stuff and how to do it. I bought it to help me organize my stuff in a bedroom, which is where I live and work. Also to help me organize my various and numerous hobbies. I find it a valuable book which I keep handy. I recommend it if the above reasons fit you. Also it's very easy to read.

Large Print Slimline NLT.......2007-06-08
This is the second edition of the New Living Translation of 2004, in large print. The print does not compare favourably with this edition in the original 1996 edition of the NLT, as the print is much smaller. I do like the 2 ribbon markers, and wish all Bibles had that. The newest editions of the Tu-Tone as of Spring, 2007, are the brown/tan; black/tan, and black/burgundy. These are very soft, and very handsome editions. The older ones of burgundy/gold stripe, blue/brown, and brown/alligator are thankfully being phased out. I enjoy the NLT, I think it to be very professionaly done, and conveys the meaning of the text. While no edition in the vernacular is perfect, this is accurate and readable. Those who prefer a literal translation(KJV, NKJV, NASB, HCSB, ESV, RSV) may not be happy, and those like myself who do not prefer inclusive language, may not be totally happy campers as well, but all-in-all, this is a very worthwhile edition to have, especially for those who prefer a larger print.
Just what I had been looking for........2007-04-05
I have been looking for a new bible and I could not find one that was the right size and print. This one is beautiful and I just love it.
A Good Shopping Experience.......2006-11-04
After looking for a Bible locally two or three times, I decided to go online. After seeing Bibles listed in several different sites, I remembered my satisfaction with that site, also my sister's favorite shopping experiences. I clicked on Amazon.com and found several Bibles with the New Living Translation and chose the Large Print volume. It arrived promptly and I find it to my liking. It is a larger print, but not extremely large. It has flexible back and front covers. It is comfortable to carry when the occasion presents itself and convenient to use in the home.

Wonderfully organized.......2007-08-03
I love the way the daily readings are organized. With sequenced readings from the Old Testament, New Testament, a Psalm and a Proverb, it makes for a nice variety for daily devotions. It takes about 15 minutes to read through each day. With the way this is laid out, there is no excuse for, "I don't have time to read the Bible everyday!" It also makes a great gift. I originally bought the NIV compact edition, which I still use when I travel, but I bought the NLT slim line large print version so I can read it without my glasses...still not as large print as most large print Bibles, but definitely easier to read than the small print in the compact. I also like the NLT for daily readings because it just seems to flow better for reading than the NIV, although I like the NIV and NASB for in depth study.
Great easy to read type in a slimmer shape........2007-05-13
A wonderfully easy way to actually read throught the whole bible.
I also love the "One Year Bible Companion" which explains the history
customs around the events I was reading about. I also love the new
slimmer size of the book.
New Living Translation Version.......2007-03-20
This was a gift to a person with visual impairment. The book was not a "large print" but a larger print and not usable.
The one year Bible: New Living Translation Version.......2007-01-10
Easy reading to understand. Our bible study with Pat Morley is doing this version and it makes it easy for me to follow.
LARGE PRINT is perfect for bed time!.......2006-12-28
Picked this item up for the New Year. Our church has gone through it over the last couple years and I figured I would finally get one. First of all, the price is great! Second, don't feel like you've gone down the path of the old folks by picking up the LARGE PRINT version. I am in my 30's with perfect vision and only got the large print version becase I planned to read it in bed with low light. I'm glad I did. This will be perfect to read in the evenings without being strange to look at. I look forward to getting through the entre Bible this year thanks to this book!

Nice Translation.......2006-04-01
I started reading the New Living Translation while working through an upper level course on Greek exegesis. I was simply looking for a version that emphasized a sentence-by-sentence translation as opposed to a word-for-word translation (because I was required to do this type of translating for my assignments). I was pleasantly surprised with the NLT. It is a very impressive work, and makes for very smooth reading. The translation team also made the wise decision to translate the dates in the text into their modern equivalents. So, whereas previous translations might read that a certain event happened in, say, the twelfth year of a certain king, the NLT will (based on historical data) read that it happened in "586 BC" or "on April 22nd, 722 BC" They have also done the same thing with other forms of measurement (including currency, weight, and time). This makes the events seem much easier to relate to.
For these reasons (and others too) I think this is a really good version. So, if you are looking for a translation that focuses more on the overall meaning of each sentence, and not just the meaning of each word, I heartily recommend this one.
NLT is understandable........2006-03-01
I recomend this product to help study Gods word. The giant print is great for folks with some vision problems. I am a king james reader mainly, but NLT is a good study aid.
Great Purchase.......2006-02-25
I am glad I found this bible I have been looking for.
Great Price And received it quickly.
NLT Bible.......2006-02-25
I was looking for a Bible easy to read for both translation and type setting. This Bible was excellent in both categories. I can now read my Bible without my eyes squinting or getting tired and read longer because the translation is in modern terms so I don't have to ponder on what the message is really saying. This would be a great Bible for new Christians who are eager to understand the word of God without constantly looking up references.
Guidebook to Life.......2006-02-23
I sent it as a gift to my older brother in california.

In a sea of books that promise certainty, award-winning author Philip Yancey (What's So Amazing About Grace, The Jesus I Never Knew) is not afraid to write about the mystery of belief, about letting risk and faith go hand in hand. Reaching for the Invisible God: What Can We Expect to Find? is Yancey at his best--wrestling with difficult questions and refusing to give pat answers. In our quest to know God, he offers this caveat: "The more personal conception of God we have, the more unnerving are the questions about him."
Yancey quotes extensively from classic writers and sketches scenes of doubting biblical figures as he grapples with making sense of a God who is personal, yet sometimes so elusive. Six different aspects of the Christian life are explored: our longing for God, who God is, the Holy Spirit, our faith, growth, and spiritual transformation. In his explorations, he reassembles the difficult and perplexing events of life around an ability to trust in a loving God. Trust is pivotal. Admitting that God's style "often baffles me," Yancey leaves no doubt that his framework of faith is still in place, that he sees "evidence of (God's) long-suffering, mercy, and desire to woo rather than compel--I have learned to trust God."
Here is the clear, concise writing mixed with deeply personal and authentic insights that won Yancey nine Gold Medallion Awards for previous books. Expect a 10th. --Cindy Crosby
Book Description
In this audio version of his new book, author Philip Yancey asks the question How does a relationship with God work? And answers it with an investigation that turns up surprising and satisfying answers about: life and communication with an invisible God the Father and his Spirit, faith in the earthly realm where theology and experience often oppose each other, and growth as a Christian that comes from maturing into childlike faith. Read by Jay Charles.

Customer Reviews:
One of the "Best" I've read........2007-10-01
This is probably the best book that I have read in terms of letting fellow Christians know that we all share bad times and periods of doubt. It was very refreshing reading how other Christians sometimes feel empty, in a day and age where the Church seems to avoid this topic. A truly great read and the perfect book for those sitting on the fence and doubting how some Christians can have as perfect of a life as they lead some to believe.
Surprisingly Honest.......2007-09-23
Phillip Yancey's book on faith and maintainig a relationship with the living God, is written in his typical, engaging writing style. His approach to the subject is anything but typical, however. No question or area of doubt is off-limits. More questions seem to be raised than answered. Yet this book is encouraging to those who struggle at times with faith-related issues (and who doesn't?). I am currently leading a group study of the book, and find that nearly everyone can relate to his down-to-earth examples and conversational style. Best of all, he causes the reader to reflect on personal areas of spiritual struggle -a necessary step on the road to renewal of faith.
One of his best.......2006-08-31
While I am a fan of Yancey's work, I often find that his books tend to get a little tedious and repetitive about 2/3 of the way through. I also find myself wondering when he's going to stop rehashing the same doubts that he seems to always write about. Having struggles in one's faith is normal and good, by I often think he gets on a gerbil wheel and won't get off. Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised that this book didn't follow this pattern.
It was engaging from start to finish, and yes he does quote quite a few writers, but it's not like the book is nothing but quotations with a little writing in between.
For someone who is at a stage in their spiritual life where doubts are creeping from all sides, this is a good book to sit down and read. The only flaw I would point out is the abrubt way that he ends it. Maybe this was intentional, to illustrate some point. But other than that, it was a good book that I will probably pick up and read again some day.
Excellent Book, Excellent Author.......2006-05-31
Evangelical Christians are well known for throwing around `relationship with God.' But what does this mean? We have relationships with our spouses, with our children, with our bosses, with the clerk at 7-11, but all of these relationships are different. How does a relationship with the almighty, omniscient God work? As Evangelicals, we also like to throw around the term, "It's not religion, it is a relationship." But what does that mean? Yancey (the master question asker) asks these questions and many more questions that Christians ask themselves at some point in their `relationships' with God Almighty.
What I appreciate the most about Philip Yancey as an author is his humility. He writes honestly, and his books lack the thick layer of pride that often has to be scraped off many Christian books. I believe he does an excellent job answering some very difficult questions, but it is done with meekness and little hint of arrogance. The subject matter itself is one that requires humility to attempt to discuss for the concept of a relationship with an almighty God requires instant modesty for those entering this relationship.
Yancey brings up an excellent point in this book about how Evangelical Christians often abuse the concept of a relationship with God. Some see God as the big buddy in the sky. We often say things like, "God is telling me right now to....." Christians use these tactics to manipulate others. Who can argue with that? But does God really tell us things like that? We often set ourselves up for abuse, manipulation and disappointment when we sing praise songs like, "I want to touch you. I want to see your face." Yet the bible makes no such promise for us to touch or see God in this life.
Chapter three is an excellent section about doubt. Any thinking Christian has gone through serious doubts about their faith, their Bible or their God. Yancey has obviously gone through such doubts but comes to the somewhat dark conclusion that, "One of the strongest reasons I stay in the fold is the lack of good alternatives." Christianity has its logical `holes', but when stacked against any other worldview- it seems watertight. When you look at the alternatives as Yancey has, nothing compares to Christianity. And even though we don't have all the answers, there are paradoxes, and we cannot wrap our minds around some of our basic beliefs- Christianity is the only thing that makes sense of this world- logically and philosophically.
After the first two parts of the book, the last four hone in on the Christian's relationship to his God. Some of the chapters in the last half of the book are informationally slow and somewhat obvious. But there are some chapters that do an excellent job describing some deep spiritual concepts in regard to our relationship with God. Some basic, yet very important ideas that Yancey expounds on include the greatness of God, identification with God's son and the acceptance that is found in that identification, the ever attractive problem of legalism, and the power of free will. All of these concepts are tied closely to our relationship with God.
This book was great, one of the best I have read ever. The writing style was perfect, not to deep and not too shallow. Whenever I read books, I snag quotes and record them into a database for later use. I got over 70 out of this book, there were some real gems. I would recommend this book to any Christian- especially any Christian who appreciates thinking about some of the tough issues in Christianity.
A painfully honest book.......2006-05-08
I found Yancey's truthfulness to be refreshing. Whether you read this book as a Christian or someone just searching, you will find, I am sure, that Yancey is honest. In fact so honest that there are times that you feel like cringing. Why is Yancey revealing family secrets? Should he point out our weaknesses like that?
I learned a lot from this book. I learned that a relationship with God is a difficult one because it is a relationship between a finite being with limited understanding (me) and an infinite, all-knowing God. No wonder I have problems relating.
I suppose one of the most common questions people ask is, assuming God is, why he doesn't show himself to us? Yancey does not admit to have all the answers but what helped me to understand God's `reluctance' to show himself to us is that if he did it would remove our freedom of choice; we would have no choice but to believe. One of the wonders of this world is our free will.
I think for those who are honestly seeking ultimate truth, this book will go some way in pointing someone towards the Scriptures and ultimately Christ Jesus himself. In the end, what will matter is our individual relationship with this invisible God.
One gripe with Yancey was his reliance on Catholic authors. For an evangelical (if he is one), he leans so heavily on Catholic sources that one would think he was a Jesuit priest. But that criticism aside, I would highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Hey, goomba! Are you on the Goomba Diet? Do you need to be?
• Do they put up crime scene tape after you visit the buffet table?
• Is the air freshener in your car a slice of provolone?
Stop crying! The Goomba Diet is here—the dolce vita diet that shows you how to eat more, drink more, laugh more, live more, and feel great while you’re doing it. The Goomba Diet offers sensible weight-loss tips for the guy who’s gone too far:
• Touch your toes. If this is difficult, pay a guy to do it for you.
• Walk to court.
It also offers helpful maintenance tips for the goomba who’s the perfect weight and wants to stay that way:
• Try an appetite suppressant. Try eating at Applebee’s.
• Pick up something heavy. Get a copy of The Da Vinci Code.
• Cut out those carbs. Only eat pastas that end in the letter i.
The Goomba Diet is the personal lifestyle guide from Steven R. Schirripa—Bobby “Bacala” Baccalieri from HBO’s hit series The Sopranos and author of the bestseller A Goomba’s Guide to Life. Developed over decades of dreaming about and then living the high life, it’s a how-to guide for happy living—how to duke a maître d', how to order a good meal, how to be a good father, a good husband and a good friend, and how to behave at a wedding, a funeral, and on the job. You wanna have a good time? Follow these rules:
• Do tip the maid. Don’t tip the made guy.
• Do tip the D.J. Don’t tip the D.A.
• Do tell the bride she’s beautiful. Don’t tell her she’s hardly showing.
• Do give your kids an allowance. Don’t offer to “make it interesting” by shooting craps for double or nothing.
The Goomba Diet is for everyone with an appetite for life, and for everyone who understands that the key to happiness isn’t found in a smaller waistline but in a bigger heart. Like Steve says, “There’s a lot of skinny actors wearing black turtlenecks and tending bar right now who’d kill for a part on The Sopranos. This fat goomba is doing all right for himself.”
So relax! Stop worrying about how much you’re eating, and start worrying about how much you’re enjoying it. Lose weight if you like—but live! Put a fork in your right hand, a hunk of bread in your left, and mangia like you mean it.
HBO® and The Sopranos® are service marks of Time Warner Entertainment Company, L.P.

Very funny .......2006-07-02
I'm sitting here in a double knit shirt , eating a mortadella and salami sandwich reconnecting with my Goomba roots after reading this. Right on the money for all the east coast Italian guys out there who grew up hanging around Goombas. You know who you are...pick this up and get real. You will immediately crave a big italian dinner, among other things.
Must read!.......2006-05-19
Steve Schirripa's new book kept me laughing the entire time! In an age of celebrity diets and exercise programs, it is a needed relief! Great book!!
A Must Read For Sporano's Fans.......2006-05-15
I just finished reading Steve Schirripa's new book "The Goomga Diet". The book is a hilarious, insightful and interesting look at one man's experience as an Italian-American and, of course, is a must read for fans of The Sopranos.
Best Trilogy Since "Lord of The Rings".......2006-05-15
Steve Schirripa's "The Goomba Diet" does for Italian cuisine what "The Da Vinci Code" does for Catholicism -- the only difference is that once the Pope reads Schirripa's book, he's going to make Steve an official Saint. Following in the tradition of his previous literary masterpieces, ("The Goomba's Guide to Life" and "The Goomba's Guide to Love") Schirripa has accomplished the impossible by writing a book that's even funnier than his first two. Whether you're Italian or Jewish, fat or thin, heterosexual or a fanook, "The Goomba Diet" delivers a powerful message from which the world can benefit. And by "the world", I mean overweight Italian criminals indicted under the RICO Statute who enjoy Penne Arrabiata. Not only is "The Goomba Diet" superior to any book currrently on the New York Times bestseller list, but it proves why Steve Schirripa deserves to host his own late night network television talk show -- he's far more talented than Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daly, and or that annoying Scottish guy on CBS. And if boring idiots like "Jerry R. from Montreal" like this book, then it can be enjoyed by EVERYONE.
The Goomba Diet brings back the smell of my Grandma's kitchen.......2006-05-15
I loved this book and refer back to it often! The recipes, stories and humor are savory treats that satisfy the stomach and the mind! We should all (As the author recommends) live large and love it!
