Some may find it unbelievable that a 20-year-old Oregon woman could be enslaved by a sexual sadist for seven years--that even after being able to move freely during the day, she would allow him to lock her into a wooden box every night. Perhaps it's a minor failing of this book that the authors do not elaborate on the psychology that made her such a "perfect victim." In other respects, though, the story is well told, with an impressive accumulation of details: the woman's capture, the tortures she endured, the brainwashing techniques, the fiendish contraptions her captor constructed, the slave contract he made her sign, and the increasingly strained relations within the peculiar family that included master, slave, wife, and child, all inside a single-wide trailer. As well-known attorney and author Vincent Bugliosi writes, "A gripping and disturbing story of the secret life of apparently normal people. At once, horrific and engrossing."

5 out of 5 stars Scary that this could happen in Napa.......2007-06-08

This book was great. It went through the whole story and didn't leave anything out. The ending was great although I got really mad at the girl for staying with him. I don't want to give too much away about the ending. It's amazing that this could happen in such a small town as Napa but it did! I live close by but at the time this occured I was living in Florida and didn't hear anything about it. It was recommended by a co-worker and I have passed this one on for many friends to read. If you like true crime then this is a great book!

2 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2007-05-11

This book was sadly disappointing. I was expecting this elaborate book. What I read was a giant mess. The author skipped back and forth from when she was kidnapped to the court case. It made for a big huge puzzle of confusion and was not as good as it could have potentially been! I actually went through and read all the parts of her being kidnapped and what she went through and then went back and read the court case at the end. Then it seemed to make more sense to me but I still feel like I want my money back so I can buy a good true crime book, by a good author like Ann Rule....then I know I won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars depressing, yet uplifting.......2007-05-01

Four stars for the book, five stars for the story and five stars from my dearest sympathy.

From beginning to end, I experienced only .001% of what the victim must have experienced. It was just a smidgen, but I felt sad and I wanted to reach out to her... as well as beat the snot out of the sadist.

It's heart-breaking at times, but also uplifting with splashes of teeth-bearing disgust. Very notable for a true crime book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting case! Book? Not so much........2007-03-13

The story of what happened to Colleen Stan really is horrendous, and so therefore this book is automatically pretty interesting. Trying to imagine years - YEARS - spent in darkness and sensory isolation, periodically broken by abuse and rape, is pretty terrifying. It is a wonder that Colleen Stan was able to hold it together in any way and retain some fragment of herself. That head box is pretty horrifying to think about.

The writing is where this book falls short. It was a very bad move, in my opinion, to switch back and forth from Colleen's ordeal to McGuire's life. It was silly; going from this poor girl's trauma to the young prosecutor's new job in a redneck office. I was really, really, PAINFULLY aware that the author WAS the prosecutor. Growing more and more frustrated with updates on her marriage, descriptions of her daughter, and illustrated moments (holding her baby while juxtaposed against a backdrop of hardcore porn is one of them) written in third person, I became a wee bit annoyed with this book.

But, the facts of this case, the details of the "Company", the empathy you feel for Colleen Stan and the urge to understand what happened within her mind, all outweigh the prosecutor/author's fascination with herself, and make for a very interesting book.

4 out of 5 stars The 'Oh, my God!' factor.......2007-01-10

Christine Mcguire did a wonderful job of telling this horrible true story. The crimes committed against these two women are almost unbelievable. I had a hard time putting the book down, because I became so ingrossed into finding out what happened. I needed to know if Colleen was able to move on with her life. Colleen is a remarkable woman. The only thing that I did not feel was necessary was all the information of the writer's life, while prosecuting this case. I felt that it took away some of the attention from the main story, and really wasn't something that the reader would really care about.

Book Description

A terrified scream forever shattered the quiet calm of a Utah neighborhood as a distraught husband pulled is beloved wife from the backyard fishpond he had recently constructed. At first glance, police had no reason to be suspicious regarding Pamela Mead's death. Her husband David was obviously suffering from the loss and no evidence immediately pointed to foul play. However, in the days and weeks that followed, suspicions were steadily aroused. Women who claimed to have relationships with David contacted police with troubling stories. David's cousin, a recovering drug addict, surfaced to recount a shocking proposal made shortly before Pamela's death. An unusually large life-insurance policy was purchased mere months before the so-called accident. And when police returned to the Mead household to gather more evidence, the fishpond where David Mead found his departed wife was gone.

Written by the prosecutor of the criminal trial, Death in a Fish Pond is the chilling detailed account of the perfect husband, the murder, and the two trials to bring the killer to justice.

3 out of 5 stars missing a lot of information .......2006-07-02

This book is more about the man who wrote it then the victim & the killer.

I cound not find ages, dates of birth, where born etc.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written with poor punctuation........2006-03-27

I bought this book after reading the other reviews. Although the case was about the death of a seemingly lovely person, the author seems to want to talk about himself as well as his colleagues, family, career (hx of law school, GI bill, etc). Such extra verbage was not necessary and did not add to the story - it mainly seemed to add to the interest of the author. Also, the editor was obviously a close friend and chose to let these errors go by without clearly using their power to keep the author in his place - the background. I was bored by the writing, excessive storytelling and lack of coherence. This author should stay in fiction and stay away from true victims and their families. That way, he can improve his craft and protect the innocent from his ramblings.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic and compelling.......2006-02-13

This book tells of the events from the time a wife is found dead in her backyard, the husband carrying on as a greatly distressed widower. We follow the events as they unfolded in the eyes of the police and the ultimate prosecutor, the author of this fascinating book. One gets the reactions of the author at each stage of the investigation and at the legal procedures which follow, including a blow-by-blow account of the trial. Any lawyer or judge will be fascinated by the account, as will any lay person who wants to know what a trial is really like so far as the proxecutor is concerned. I found this a really good book, and as I usually do when I read a true crime book I read the opinion from the Supreme Court: State v. Mead, 27 P.3rd 1115 (Utah 2001); and it was like a condensation of the account of the trial we read about in great detail in the book. And one always finds of interest the differences and the samenesses in procedure between what we know in our own state and the way it is done in Utah, and considering which way is better. It balances out, even if one thinks the way it is done in the state with which we are familiar is sometimes preferable.

5 out of 5 stars SO HAPPY...JUSTICE WAS DONE FOR MY FRIEND PAM.......2005-09-12

I have been waiting 11 years to hear what really happened the night og August 15, 1984. I have heard many rumors from co-workers but of course had my own thoughts. I knew Pam well and flew with her often. This book gives her life dignity and respect. I always had that gut feeling she was WAY too good for David. She was one of the kindest and sweetest people I ever was lucky enough to meet. She also told me how much her family from Colorado meant to her. I was unable to attend the funeral and have always felt like I needed to know more. Of course I had me own suspicions from DAY ONE!! I couldn't put the book down...I was very impressed with the writer/prosecutor. Thank you Mr. Lemcke for not only writing a great book but helping a dear friend rest in peace.

5 out of 5 stars Fishpond is Fascinating.......2005-05-30

A vivid look into what it takes to build a case against the cold blooded but seemingly perfect husband. Loved the humanity when dealing with the other players in the drama. Great writing style and insight to how everything in the judicial process falls together.

This was a sweet story. If you're into romance this is a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Wish it wasn't the end of the series..........2006-06-08

Each book was unique yet tied together so well. I love them all and have read each one at least three times. But something is missing...where is Liza's story? The series is NOT complete without that story.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Ending.......2006-03-31

The Perfect Match was the perfect ending to the Deep Haven series. Not only was this well thought out story wrapped up with beauty, we got to check in on the couples from the previous books, "Happily Ever After" and "Tying the Knot."

With this series, Susan May Warren climbed her way right onto my list of favorite authors.

4 out of 5 stars Fun afternoon read.......2006-01-30

This is a fun and cozy series. The plot isn't as deep as some of her other books, but very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Deep Haven So Far! .......2004-09-15

Wow! This book was great! I have read all of Warren's Deep Haven novels now, and while I have really enjoyed them all, this is my favourite so far. The story was faced paced and action packed from the first sentence to the last. I couldn't put it down! It was also unique in that it delved into the question of the role of women in certain professions (such as firefighting) confronting common stereotypes on the issue, but from a Christian perspective. And, once again, Warren has demonstrated the ability to integrate a quality story line that intrigues and delights with solid biblical truth. That is definitely one of the things I love about her writing. Although she's writing romance, her stories are never just fluff. They are stories about the transforming work of Christ in the lives of ordinary people who face common struggles and confront common misconceptions about the true character of God and his love and grace. With every one of Warren's books I seem to learn more about who God really is, and that, to me, is the mark of good Christian fiction. The fact that Warren is able to weave that into a story that is so intriguing and enjoyable that non-Christians would also enjoy it is a mark of her skill as a writer. Overall, this book is a great read and I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Fast Paced.......2006-12-11

From the moment I opened this book to the time i closed it all I can say is - Fast Paced. Alot of times while reading romantic suspense novels they either have no supsense or no real romance. Well this book has both. I really enjoyed it.

Addison is looking for her birth mother after the death of her adoptive parents tragic death. She decides to hire a P.I. and in turn meets Randall a complicated man helping his brother at the P.I. office till his manadory leave is up. These two characters together have good chemistry and lots of drama. Her character development was done fairly well and the romance was pretty convincing. Solid four stars for me.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent plot but...........2006-07-03

I love Linda Castillo's books. However, this one I was less than thrilled with. It started with a great plot but the characters never grabbed me.

I don't understand the attraction between Randall and Addison. The twelve year age difference wasn't a problem, if they were of the same basic maturity. But even though Addison had a successful business she was lacking in logic and common sense. Her going down into that ravine was plain stupid. Randall had extremely valid reasons for her not to do it yet she climbed down 200 feet and because of her actions they ended up in a snowstorm. Randall was a crash sight investigator for the NTSB. He knew what he was doing. Her constant insistence about being involved in everything put them in a lot of danger. If she wanted to do everything herself then what was the point of hiring a PI?

I can however recommend her other books especially the Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue series.

4 out of 5 stars Gripping Suspense.......2005-10-28

The Perfect Victim, like Linda Castillo's other novels, is a gripping read as she produces yet another original thriller. No old tired storyline from this author!

Addison Fox is a target of a murderer as she tries to find her birth parents. Together with private investigator Randall Talbot, they probe into sealed adoption records and old criminal cases to uncover what someone is willing to kill again to hide.

This is a great suspense. Even though the identity of the murderer is no big secret, the story is still a page turner and I could not wait to see what happened in the end. Addison and Randall have a great relationship - both are strong-minded individuals who want their own way, and unwillingly compromise to appease the other!

The murderer's fate was a bit disappointing, and I wished there was a bigger punishment in store for him. But nonetheless, I'd recommend this book. Linda Castillo is a cut above many other romantic suspense authors out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Author.......2005-09-29

I love Linda Castillo. Her books grab you from the begining and you can't seem to put her books down. I can't wait for her new book to come out in December. She has suspense, her books always keep you guessing and she has a touch of romance. It's got it all.

5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good read..........2003-06-20

Addison Fox had no family left after her adoptive parents were killed in an auto accident ten months before. With nothing preventing her from locating her birth mother, Addison starts the search that begins something that she never expected. Finding her birth mother murdered, Addison is devestated, but determined to go on with her life. When people around her that she knows start to turn up dead, Addison realizes what they all have in common...they know who her mother was. She only has one person to turn to and she would rather do anything than ask for his help.

Randall Talbot has his own demons to fight. When Addison asks for his help, he wants to refuse. Then he's thrown right into the middle of the game, and he knows that he can't leave her to end up dead. The deeper they dig into the past, the more Randall knows that someone is going to wind up dead, and most likely it will be him and Addison. The very thought of being responsible for her life sends panic streaking through him every time he thinks of it. The more time he spends with Addison, the more he realizes that he will never be able to desert her.

My first book by Linda Castillo was not a dissapointment. She depicted two strong characters that will hold your interest as well as keep you at the edge of your seat the entire read. The suspense in this book is very believeable and the romance is very deep due to the time both the characters are in in their lives. I will definetly pick up the next Castillo book that comes out!

5 out of 5 stars dEscription from back cover:.......2007-01-04

One night in March 1999, fifteen-year-old dance student Rachel Elizabeth Barber vanished. No one could have guessed that she had become another girl's 'perfect' victim. Happy. Beautiful. Talented. She had everything her killer could want.
Perceived by crime experts everywhere as one of the most bizarre homicides they had encountered, Perfect Victim recounts two stories: Rachel's mother Elizabeth Southall tells of her family's heart-rendering experience - how they lived through unimaginable tragedy, going to extraordinary lengths to prove their daughter wasn't a runaway. Criminal court reporter Megan Norris provides another side of the picture; the analysis, the astonishment of professionals when faced with the killer's weird and unsettling letters, and the police proceedings that led, eventually, to the Rachel Barber case being solved.

Confronting and compelling, this is an incredible story about a callous and calculated crime.

5 out of 5 stars The eyes are the windows to the soul so may your eyes take Rachel's story in forever remembered dancing in your heart.......2005-10-30

I was drawn to a copy of Perfect Victim, thanks to the hypnotic, engaging and exquisitely beautiful eyes of Rachel Barber. The fifteen year old girl from Melbourne portrayed in this touching book. I got a copy for my Mum for Mother's Day 2002, since she loves true stories. I also felt I'd enjoy reading it and I really did. This book has touched me like no other real life account from a mother's perspective ever has. The events happen here in locations I know so for me it does have a chilling aspect to it I could relate to. I don't read many real life stories since they can have a profound effect on me. From the very first line it had me in a state of shock, and always incredibly moved. We never get to really know Rachel because from the start she has already vanished. So a sense of dread already comes over me. It's only through reading from chapter to chapter do the events of her disappearance take shape, and her final hours are reconstructed in a fascinating series of events, I couldn't even see coming. Yet it is a very gratifying resolution to Rachel's disappearance, and one I really enjoyed reading. Both sides of the story are addressed, not only from the mother of Rachel, but the killers story making this better then most other books around.

I think this would make an effective movie one day. I can see myself directing it but then maybe I'm a little too close to the subject matter. I might not also have much experience in this field but I guess it's all relative. I don't know anyone in this book but I wish I did. Rachel's eyes are a big part of the attraction to her I think. Nothing pychotic intended, just pure interest and a deep love to remember her affectionately. I think Ron Howard would do a wonderful film if offered it even though it may never be on the market for filming. To me, Ron did such effective films for 'Ransom' and 'The Missing'. Even though he doesn't like to do kidnapping stories I still think he does them extreamly well.

If I had to choose characters for a film I'd probably choose Amanda Seyfried as Rachel. Mika Boorem as Heather. Amber Tamblyn as Ashleigh-Rose. Hilarie Burton as Caroline. Pattie Tierce as Elizabeth the mother. Matt McCoy as the father Mike.

In 2002, the year this was first published, I discovered Rachel would have been eighteen. Now in 2005, if she had lived, and I believe she and others who have passed into heaven have never really gone, would have been twenty-one this year in September, and that is a very special event for most people. So for anyone who has lost someone close to them, you'd always want to remember. That's how I feel.

I really couldn't say a word wrong with this book, even though someone is sure to find faults. I'm sure I'll also hold a special place in my heart for this precious little girl, so please be respectful to my review and the subject matter. I'm so thrilled it has been recounted for people to read. I have also passed where Rachel used to dance and while I've never been to a funeral or visited her grave there would be time for that one day I'm sure. May we all look out for each other those past and present.

I'm more then happy to speak with anyone who has read this book and feels as touched as I continually am about everything it contains. A book I'm very proud of, and couldn't imagine it not being in my vast book collection. This is one of my favorite books and will always be special to me. I will always love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Victim: Finding Rachel through the Tragedy.......2004-12-13

First read by myself little over three years ago at the tender age of sixteen, Perfect Victim remains one of the most compelling works I have come across. The novel is essentially centred on Elizabeth Southall's intense and emotional tribute to her 15-year-old daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Barber, murdered by a troubled young woman driven to the unthinkable by obsession. Interspersed with Southall's story is an account of the case from the point of view of journalist Megan Norris, providing a detailed analysis of the motive and means while offering what little insight can be found into Rachel's 20-year-old killer.

Through the agony and ecstasy of Elizabeth's later entries emerges a truly beautiful tribute to her daughter's life, one that remains with you long after the pages close. It can remain difficult to twist yourself away from the ugliness of Rachel's early demise, yet, like Elizabeth, towards the novel's close you are simply inspired by the energy of Rachel's life. With the contribution of Norris' perceptive examination of the Barber case, Perfect Victim shines as a profound insight into love, death and beyond.

Feel free to discuss your own reflections on this exceptional book with me at bijou_bleu{at}hotmail.com.

There was only one thing that Terri didn't know. Mya was jealous of her. In Victim of Trust, Terri will soon remember the advice her late father told her. " Keep you friends close, but keep your enemies closer." Soon Terri's life will start to crumble right in front of her, and she feels hopeless. Will she be able to recover from all of the disasters that have happened to her or will she fall apart?

Victim of Trust starts off a little slow, but if you keep reading, you will not be able to put it down. In my opinion, I thought the author gave too much detail to things that really were not important. The book flowed very well. The characters in the book are people that you could relate to, and you probably know someone like them ( I know I do). Victim of Trust is very sexy, intense, and full of emotions. I would recommend this to my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Trust...Is it there?.......2007-06-17

Nikiya Celestin told a powerful story of love, friendship and trust in her novel "Victim Of Trust". It was a well written story of friends trusting friends, couples trusting each other. It also dealt with a large amount of jealously. The end had took a surprising turn. I wasn't at all expecting that! Her charcters were lively and easy to picture. Trust? Is it there? A great read.

Thank you for sharing Nikiya

4 out of 5 stars Can I Trust You?.......2007-05-05

When jealousy, lies, deception, and secrets are a part of any relationship, the relationship will be on shaky grounds. Nikiya Celestin creates a world of non-stop twists in Victim of Trust.

Terri Baker and Mya Cooper were childhood friends. Though they claimed to be best of friends, their relationship was far from a normal one. Both women wanting what the other had at one point or another caused a strain in their friendship. Though Mya was very much aware of Terri's jealousy of her, Terri never really realized that Mya was envious of things she had, which caused her to continuously do things that were unhealthy for a good friendship.

Terri did not want to be anything but perfect for her fiancé, Darnell Davis. Even though they were both far from perfect, she did not want to lose him over this major secret she was hiding. Darnell could not stand people who kept secrets; however, it did not stop him from keeping his own secret. Whose secret will be the cause of great shock to many? Can their relationship overcome whatever secret they both hold?

Once one secret is revealed, it just causes a chain reaction of unforeseen events. Just as you think you have reached the climax, you are given another jaw-dropping piece of the puzzle.

Victim of Trust started off slow, but once the drama started to unfold, it read pretty quickly. In the beginning of the book there were a few minor errors, but as it got to the ending the errors increased. Overall this was a good read. I would recommend to readers who just want to enjoy a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Keeping Secrets.......2007-02-10

Terri is a well-known entertainment lawyer whose father worshipped her and expected nothing but perfection. When her father dies, she feels as if a huge chasm has opened in her life. She attempts to maintain the perfection he expected in everything she does. She meets her fiancé, Darnell, whose main expectation from her is that she keeps no secrets from him. Terri has a secret she is sure will break up their relationship if he finds out. Unfortunately for Terri, he does find out she is unable to have children and their relationship is on the rocks - not because she can't conceive, but because she kept it from him. Darnell, for all his self-righteousness, has a secret of his own that might even be worse than Terri's. Meanwhile, Terri's relationship with her best friend Mya, who is married and pregnant, is falling apart because of Terri's jealousy. Her sister Kira, isn't very close to her because of the selfishness Terri displays in her search for perfection. Terri feels as if her world is coming apart yet little does she know that it is about to explode in her face.

VICTIM OF TRUST by Nikiya Celestin is a suspenseful novel of love, lies and betrayal that is a real page-turner. It starts off a bit slow but soon picks up speed. The characters are well developed and the plot is certainly believable. Some editing would fix the disconcerting changes in tense and make the reading smoother. In spite of the grammatical errors, the story is captivating and won't let you put it down.

This new edition updates and expands the first edition. Research on crime victims' issues is a relatively new phenomenon in the criminal justice field. With the birth of victimology in the late 1940s and early 1950s, research focused on victim-offender relationships and victim culpability. It has only been in the last few decades that researchers have both studied the effects of crime upon the victim and analyzed the services provided to the crime victim. Moriarty and Jerin provide an understanding of the impact of the criminal act upon individuals and society through recent research. The book provides the criminal justice field with a foundation for grasping the complexities of crime victimization. Current Issues in Victimology Research is a collection of sixteen original articles written by criminal justice academics and practitioners. The book is arranged into sections including fear of crime, campus victimization, victim services and representation, victims' rights versus offenders' rights, and sexual harassment and stalking. Unlike most other victimology books, which are written as textbooks, this book is a volume of the most recent research, conducted by academic scholars in the field, focusing on current issues in victimology.
