A great read on sexual positions. .......2007-09-07

This isn't your typical sexual manual book. It's more hands on--literally--than that. Mostly, it's about sexual position and how to do it anywhere. I found the author quite knowledgable and seemed to really understand the material she was writing about. If you want a book about seuxal position because you're confused or whatever, get this one. It's not to be missed. I also recommened Sex Machine: A Man's Guide to What Really Pleases a Woman in Bed, in addition to this one.

My wife and I lead the marriage ministry in our church and do much of the marriage counseling. We have used a number of Christian resources to help couples. Our approach is focused around Emotional Focused Therapy. This is the best resource we have found that captures the "process" of how to apply this concept to a realtionship. (works with kids, co-workers, etc as well) If a couple is committed to healing the marriage, and will learn and apply the skills outlined in the book--the marriage can be healed.

I have read many books on marriage but found this one to be different and most helpful. It outlined how my wife and i fight, and then showed us a way out of our fight cycle. We are beginning to learn how to stay emotionally connected, despite our differences. I highly recommend it. We are reading through this book at our monthly couples group - and find the questions at the end of each chapter very helpful.

A great book that can save your marriage.......2003-10-13

When you get married, your partner becomes a secure base, a safe haven; someone you can trust to listen and care about your concerns. The secure base is at the heart of your marriage. Whenever this is shattered, the marriage begins failing and, if the wound is not repaired, the relationship can eventually fall apart. This book does a wonderful job of explaining how to identify the wounds in your marriage and how to--practically--go about healing them. I have recommended it to many of my clients and they simply love it. If your marriage is struggling, you may want to check this book out.

safe enough to connect.......2003-06-08

This book is about how the arguments between you and your spouse keep you both from emotionally connecting. This book helped my wife and I realize that our conversations focused on trying to get each other to see our own side. We never stopped to understand each other. I defended myself against her accusations until I finally emotionally withdrew and put my emotional energy into work and my own interests. She kept at me saying that if she didn't I would never pay attention to her. My wife and I have been fighting like this for years. Safe Haven Marriage has helped us understand our fight cycle, why we fight and what we can do to change the way we share our views. It helped me see that when my wife's 'porcupine quills' come out and she is mad at me, underneath she is trying to get me to understand her and draw me in. 'Safe Haven Marriage' has helped us understand each other. A great book with great stories. I highly recommend it. It has helped us 'emotionally connect' for the first time in a long time.

Safe Haven for Some.......2003-04-27

"Safe Haven" marriage. Sounds good. Hart appears to understand the need for Christian marriages to be safe places for both spouses. Unfortunately, there is at least one group of women to whom he denies the right to(or privilege of) a safe haven marriage: Those whose husbands are involved in porn or other lustful pursuits. These wives are exhorted to forego a safe haven -- to continue to subject themselves to the anguish of repeated betrayal -- in order to play Florence Nightingale to their biologically-challenged husbands. Sure, Hart encourages the women to tell their men how much it hurts (without being judgmental, mind you), but other than that, they are to take bullet after bullet to their hearts, and not bleed to death. So much for a safe haven. Great concept. Too bad he denies safety to those who need it most. If you are a woman in the situation I described, please know that Hart's response to you is not Jesus' response. Jesus loves you more than that.

Light Reading.......2007-08-05

This was my first Catherine Palmer book and I will probably think twice before buying another one. It is a good book if you want a bit of fluffy, light reading. It would well belong to the seventies Harlequin romance books. It is shelved with Christian fiction, though not overly Christian and it is a little contrived. The hero would definitely not have to marry Mara to provide for her and her unborn child. No man in his right mind would saddle himself with a woman he didn't love and a child simply to provide for them. It is not completely believable.

Not Palmer's best.......2007-01-17

This book seems like an excuse for the author to write an average romance in an unrealistic setting. Basics: husband of pregnant woman dies and she blames the best friend, who is now offering her marriage out of guilt to cover her husbands debt build-up and health care and security for her unborn child. The two main characters hate each other, yet she marries him anyway. That is the setup for these two to "fall in love." The romance, the friends, even the so-called forgiveness all seemed so forced; it often made me cringe. The only reason I finished the book is because I was bored, and I breathed a sigh of relief when I closed the book. I turned right around and returned it for my money back. I was highly disappointed with Palmer and this book, because she's written some amazing books, some worth five stars. But this isn't one of them.

Worth the Read.......2006-07-17

Honestly, I loved the story. It was everything one could ask for in an Inspirational romance novel. There were, however, a few points with which I continue to struggle reconciling with reality. If one is able to set aside these few issues, the book is well worth reading.

First, I continue to be irked with the novel's premise that Mara & Brock had to be married for Brock to provide the assistance he promised to Mara. They wed so the wealthy Brock can provide financially for her & her unborn child, who have been left husbandless, fatherless, & penniless since the tragic death of Mara's husband, the best friend of Brock. Set in the 1800's, this premise would be more than logical. However, set in present-day, it rubs me as nothing more than a means to a beautiful love story.

Second, I have not been able to shake my husband's comment regarding the premise. He commented that it was a great, guilt-free way to get together with one's husband's best friend. Yes, I chided & corrected him, explaining the story, but the disconcerting thought has remained tucked in my mind. And my husband doesn't even have a best friend. So I'm not sure how men would take this book (or any romance novel, for that matter, I suppose).

Despite these personal issues with the story, I still remained completely enthralled from beginning to end. The characters are nicely developed, & the passion & intensity between the couple could possibly leave one breathless. Mara's struggle with accepting her husband's death & learning to love her new husband seem appropriate & well drawn out. The story is peppered with humor & insight, as well as some heart-wrenching moments. (Personally, I loved the amusing opening scene, imagining the two in the bathroom already fighting.)

Oh, how I wanted to give this 5 stars! If only I could reconcile my innate romanticism with my view of reality. Even still, I'd read it again whilst suspending disbelief.

This was a light enjoyable read. The characters were decent and the message was good. Its not a book that you'd need to reread, but a great one to enjoy for the moment.

Safe Haven, another great story in the Hideaway series, is filled with just the right mix of intrigue and romance. Hannah Alexander knows how to weave a tale to keep me turning pages and wondering what will happen next, without giving away the pieces to the puzzle too soon. If you haven't read these medical romantic mysteries, you're in for a treat. I had the privilege of interviewing Hannah Alexander for my "Spotlight" section of my website to discover the motives behind the writing. This writing duo has won some prestigious awards and has more books in the works. I look forward to more Hideaway stories and other medical mysteries. But if you haven't read this one, don't miss it!

Unflinchingly honest portrayals of finding salvation.......2004-09-03

Fawn Morrison, Karah Lee Fletcher and Taylor Jackson have very little in common, aside from the fact that all three are native Missourians. A runaway teenaged prostitute, a bitter medical doctor, and a nomadic ranger couldn't share anything else ... or could they? In SAFE HAVEN, the second novel in Hannah Alexander's Hideaway series, the authors take a slightly different approach than in their first book, introducing these three disparate characters in separate chapters and slowly showing readers how their paths will intertwine.

While things are still relatively peaceful in the town of Hideaway, recent land purchases and development by the megalithic Beaufont Corporation are threatening to change life there permanently --- for the worse. Karah Lee has arrived fresh out of medical residency and ready to assist Dr. Cheyenne Allison in her small but bustling practice. Allison, the protagonist of the first book, has taken on emergency room duties in a nearby city and is now engaged to Dane Gideon, presently the town mayor and still foster father to a number of teenaged boys at his ranch. Taylor, who lives in a recreational vehicle, has duties in Hideaway, but tries to avoid having any ties there. Meanwhile, fugitive Fawn winds up in the town after filching a bus ticket --- and realizing that her fellow passengers are all in mysteriously bad shape.

Alexander combines details of small-town life (fans will be amused to watch Karah Lee devour the same black-walnut baked goods of Bertie Meyer's that Cheyenne could hardly stomach) with sound medical action and real Christian growth. There is very little pew-jumping or praise-shouting here; instead, each character comes to salvation in his or her own way, and finds support for newfound beliefs in his or her own way, too. Fawn's plight, from beginning to end, is particularly moving and believable --- in this case, her allegorical name seemed right, and not forced.

Hannah Alexander is the pen name of husband-and-wife writing team Mel and Cheryl Overall. Their first novel in this series, HIDEAWAY, earned glowing reviews from both the secular and CBA press, and this second one is a strong follow-up to that book. While some of the faults of HIDEAWAY are still apparent here --- some scenes seem flat, especially when they're dealing with very worldly matters like graft and murder --- the pace of the book helps readers overlook inconsistencies. Also, the authors do not shy away from modern dilemmas, sin or doubt. They are unflinchingly honest about human failings. Mel and Cheryl keep the story moving; whenever I found myself wondering, "What the heck could this be about?", suddenly a very interesting and obviously well-planned answer would appear.

This is a wonderful book on American miniatures and mourning portraits. Ostensibly a catalogue of the Yale collection, it also gives a great history of miniatures in their cultural context, a discussion of miniature painters and processes, and a synopsis of the tradition of mourning items. Very well researched and well written. Beautiful pictures of miniatures, most at actual size, and many enlarged to reveal tiny details. This book is accessible to both scholars and the interested public.

Worth the Wait.......2001-04-17

I began my interest in miniature paintings several years ago, but found that long searches on the internet rarely produced any new information on this topic. Owning about 4 "worthwhile" books in my collection on the subject, I anxiously awaited Robin Jaffee Frank's book (which I became aware was "in the works" about 6 months before publication). I hoped that this book would be the frosting on the cake of knowledge I possessed on miniatures. I was delighted to find it is the cake itself. Miniature itself in size, it contains a whopping 358 pages packed with information and insights, along with plenty of full-size illustrations. It's presented in a format that can be easily followed, with many paintings also shown magnfied to enhance the concept being presented. You will want to take your time in reading and relishing this book, there's alot of information here. Well worth the wait.

Sick of bars and clubs, anyone? Well, if you would like some interesting suggestions that are very easy to put into action, then this book may be what you're looking for. My problem has always been this "where do I find a man" without scoping out the singles scene. I just don't trust going to bars and clubs 'cause I know what kind of guy visits them and more often than not.....they're dangerous. The book suggests things like establishments near military bases for the soldier type. You're bound to meet your fair share of men in that arena. Coffehouses next to retail stores that males frequent such as computer outlets, motorcycle shops, sporting goods stores. Racetracks, poker clubs. Us women often think we might meet someone at work or in places we normally go. The problem is that men just don't spend time at the local craft store. Men love cars. Why not keep an eye on the newspaper for local gunshows (these places DO HAVE HOT MEN!)auto shows, boat shows, sports tournaments and other places they recreate, hang with their male friends, and purchase products for their computers and other toys. I have tried these things and like I said. The hot men are out there! In all the places YOU would never go. Women. Come on now. If you want the perfect shade of pink lipstick, it don't just show
up on your door. You go to Ulta or Sally Beauty supply and get it. If you want that perfect shade of guy, you need to go do what women do best. Go shopping. Trust me, girls. The men in these areas are not expecting you to be there. Surprise them.

P.S. After reading half this book, I decided to change careers.
I was a florist. Now I'm a bartender. Guess who's dangerous now?

A fun read.......2002-09-12

I bought this book after seeing it featured at ManWatchers.com. What a kick! A fun and positive approach to finding men with an amazing number of ideas on where to look. It really got me to think more creatively about places to go. I especially liked the section on Going Out Alone . . . no more sitting at home with nothing to do! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is still wondering where to go to meet men.

Answers all the questions about where to meet men!.......2002-04-05

I read this book in order to back up some of the research that was needed for my own book. Bobbie's 712 places to meet men really does a thorough job of stimulating the mind. For instance, while I may have simply said to meet people at work, she has come up with a few dozen distinctions in this area. The same goes for her section of the casino gambling meeting place.

I think that most of all women will realize that they can meet a man almost anywhere as long as she is sensitive to the situation, is warm and attractive, and makes herself approachable.

Add in a little bit of luck and persistence and you'll get your chance at love.

If not, as Bobbie writes....you may have to move.

It is worthwhile investing. As a single woman, it gives additional information on where to find suitable men from the different places with similar interests. I find this book helpful, besides as an entertaining manual.
