A Never-Ending Tale.......2007-07-05
I should have gotten a clue from the florid title. This is a tiresome novel that goes on & on & on. The plot starts out well, but then disintegrates after 200 pages. Was this author being paid by "the word"? I became very impatient reading it & kept wondering when, if ever it would end. The writing is rather in the trend of "then he said", "she said" scant descriptive writing I expected better. Ms. King tried to squeeze too much into this tale.
a wonderful read.......2007-07-03
I enjoyed this immensely. Well written and a wonderful escape read for those of us women who are a little older. :) Enjoy
An enjoyable read!.......2007-06-20
The book started really slow for me and didn't grab me to read on at all. I stuck to it though and am glad I did. I can relate to the "letting your husband go" aspect of the main character (since I loss my husband just 2 yrs ago)and learning to let yourself be loved again. At times, it felt like 'past' information was withheld from the reader for too long (how her husband died for instance). I loved the book though in the end.
When traveling on the road to self-discovery, it can be a long ride home...........2007-05-30
Clare Ballenger is an extraordinary woman who has finally come into her own after many years of being in the shadows. Since her marriage ended in tragedy, Clare has focused exclusively on her lucrative career as a divorce therapist. While helping hundreds of men and women mend their broken hearts, Claire chooses not to follow the sound advice she dishes out to her clients. Falling in love again is the last thing she wants.
Clare is furious when her best friend, Dory, decides to reconcile with estranged husband Son. After all, Son doesn't really deserve Dory...or so Clare thinks. Finally realizing that Son and Dory will be staying together, her attention shifts to her own situation. Although fully aware of how lonely her life has become, she constantly beats herself up about her husband Mack's shocking death. Was it her fault?
As if her demons couldn't haunt her any more, Clare has her hands full with her daughter. Haley, the product of a fling her husband had before they were together, experienced a horrible childhood, but Clare found it in her heart to welcome the girl with open arms. Mack never liked Haley's spouse, Austin. Always the one to spot things, Clare drops the ball on Austin and is blind-sided when he leaves Haley and her grandchildren for another woman. Wanting to be there for her daughter, Clare is unconsciously forced into confronting her own mishaps and skeletons. It's amazing what you see when you take the time to look in the mirror.
Wanting to be loved, but trapped in the comfortable position of shutting herself out, Clare has some difficult decisions to make. Should she open up and confront her past, move on and live somewhat happily ever after? Or should she wallow in self-pity, guilt and a psychotic need to constantly relive the not-so-perfect life she had with her deceased husband? It's bad enough that Rye, Mack's cousin, has been chasing Clare since his death. But then there's also Lex, a retired sea captain and new owner of the marina, who's very interested in her --- though Lex's ex-wife is hell-bent on rekindling their relationship. When does the madness end?
Cassandra King pens a novel full of self-reflection, truth and honesty that will compel readers to think about their own lives as well. Witty and light-hearted with some grim and poignant moments, the storyline shows how very hard it is to face your demons, whatever they may be. King does an excellent job of portraying how life has its own way, whether we like it or not. But what we choose to do with it is an entirely different story.
If you're looking for an inspiring read, QUEEN OF BROKEN HEARTS certainly does the trick. One thing is for sure: When traveling on the road to self-discovery, it can be a long ride home.

Combination chick-lit and Southern tale..........2007-05-29
Queen of Broken Hearts by Cassandra King is a combination chick-lit and Southern tale. This delightfully charming novel takes place in Fairhope, Alabama.
Clare Ballenger is a psychologist who specializes in helping people (mostly women) put their lives back together as they navigate through a divorce. She is in the process of building a retreat on land given to her by her mother-in-law, Zoe Catherine. Unfortunately for Clare, her own marriage ended with the death of her husband in a tragic accident. While Clare's specialty is helping others, she seems unable to help herself. Although she has two possible romantic interests, she keeps both at arms length, refusing to trust her heart to love again. She also wears blinders when it comes to the marriage of her daughter.
King excels in her characters, and Broken Hearts is filled with a number of quirky individuals. There is Lex (sturdy marine owner from Maine), Rye (the pretty local society boy) and Zoe (who lives in a bird sanctuary and has shunned society). There is also daughter Haley and best friend Dory. King writes of strong relationships between Clare and the women in her life. Their friendships are a driving force in helping all the women deal with adversity.
While I enjoyed Queen of Broken Hearts, I thought the plot was a bit predictable. But only a Southern author can write a good Southern tale, and I look forward to each book that Cassandra King writes.

I loved the adventures of Weetamoo, and I wanted to read more even though the book was done!
Weetamoo.......2005-12-18
Weetamoo is the inspiring story of a young Native American girl who strives to become a woman and for patience. The beginning starts out kind of slow, and it's hard to get into. But if you keep reading then you really get into it. It was interesting to see the way she changed throughout the diary. It was also interesting to find out the way the authour took a real historical character and turned her into a fictional one. Her true life story is really tragic, and so is the end of the book. It depends on your age weather I'd recommend it or not. It can be a little childish and too easy to read at times. Other than that, it's a great story!
Enjoyable, but lacks solid information........2005-08-14
"Weetamoo: Heart of the Pocassets, Massachusetts, 1653" took me by surprise, since I did not know about this woman, and because she did not know how to read or write. This last fact made it harder for me to let myself into her world, knowing that the things in her diary may not have happened that way, much less at all. If you set this historical bungle aside, then the story is quite interesting, but slow-going. I really wanted to know more about the "Coat-men" (the English settlers) according to Weetamoo, and I felt the ending was very hasty. Much research and time went into this book, and I give credit to author Patricia Clark Smith for undertaking such a task, and I blame myself for not truly appreciating it, since I was caught up in the accuracy or their lack of it. Since not much is known about Weetamoo, I had trouble seeing her through this diary, and after a while, I had to resign myself to thinking that this diary belonged to an ordinary Native American girl. If you can look past the lack of information about Weetamoo, then this could be an enjoyable book. I "sorta" recommend.
Warrior woman Weetamoo depicted as a child!.......2005-08-07
I had always thought of Weetamoo as the powerful warrior woman who entered King Phillip's war with style and grace. Many thought her a killer and a savage, but this book depicts Weetamoo as a young teenager in Massachusetts. The year is 1653 and Weetamoo is a 14 year old girl, eldest daughter of Corbitant, the chief of the Pocasset people. They are what they call themselves: the 'Wampanoag' nation, and many of them have expressed interest in the English 'coat-men' that have recently sailed into Massachusetts. Many of their tribe have changed their religion to use the English materials instead of their poor, natural ones. Weetamoo, too expresses interest in the 'coat-men and women' while she plays snowsnake with other children of her tribe and from other tribes. Weetamoo lives a simple, carefree life in her Pocasette Tribe, playing with friends and finding love. Until she has a secret vision during a fasting ceremony of the squared eyed godess 'Squant' Weetamoo knows she must do whatever she can to save the Pocassets. I enjoyed this Royal Diary and found it very interesting with it's gods and traditional Pocassett life.
heart of the pocassets.......2005-05-14
Weetamoo is a girl from 1653 and she is a pretty average teenager. She has to travel from Massachusetts to Rhode Island. With her family and village, They make it. The problem isthat Weetamoo had to suffer harsh cold, feets of snow winters. Very hot summers. All as well as doing all her chores.
If you like diaries and stories of Native Americans. You will for sure like this book.

Tawdry Rather Than Celebratory.......2000-12-05
The most unfortunate thing about Jim Silke's book is that he writes about Bettie Page (and very poorly, at that) as an object rather than as a person--his interest in Bettie doesn't seem to extend beyond his own masturbatory fantasies. It doesn't appear that the author spent much time researching his subject (beyond looking at her pictures). While there are a respectable number photographs and some nice artwork by Dave Stevens and Robert McGinnis, there are far too many pages devoted to Silke's own drawings of Bettie, many of which are based on old movie stills or Olivia paintings.

I loved this book..........2003-08-05
I remember getting this for a birthday present on my fifth birthday, and absolutely loving it! Well, I found it in the basement the other day, and picked it up to see why I loved it so much.
"The Queen of Hearts" is basically about an unnamed little girl (referred to as The Little Girl), who promises her class her mother's wonderful tea hearts for the school party. But, the day before the party, her mom has to go away on a business trip, so the little girl and her father decide to make the cookies instead. Of course, the cookies turn out to be a big hit, and everyone loves them, but this is just such a nice story - you can't help but love it! The (what I believe to be) watercolor pictures aren't amazing, but fit the book very nicely - and I still have the heart-shaped necklace that came with the book!
Overall grade: A
My Daughter Loved It.......2000-12-31
For my 5-year-old who passionately wants to do things the right way and be the best at something, this book was a wonderful gift. She related to the little girl in the story, who wanted to bake as well as her mother did but was intimidated by her own inexperience and past failures. The story encourages readers to get help when they need it, but also to try hard things by themselves and never give up. Dads, as well as moms, will enjoy reading it with their daughters, because the little girl's father plays just as important a part as her mother does. My daughter remembers the point of the story whenever she puts on the necklace that came with it. Reading The Queen of Hearts made us want to put into practice what we had learned. We had to find the cookie recipe in a cookbook though, as it didn't come with the book. I would recommend this book as a gift for any little girl.
Actually, I Loved It.......2000-12-31
I felt sorry for the little girl who was afraid that if she baked cookies for her school party they would be yukky. I love to bake with my mom. We like to bake chocolate chip cookies and things for snacktime at kindergarten, but we also made the cookies like the little girl did in the book. They really were the best cookies! I like it when my mom reads with me and bakes with me. And the book had a necklace like a cookie cutter in it! I think I can make cookies as good as the girl in Queen of Hearts. Other girls will like this book too, but probably not boys.

terrific historical account .......2007-02-11
King Philip II of Spain was also the King of England when his wife devout Catholic Mary sat on the throne. Like his spouse he loathed the Reformation and tired to end its pervasive insurrection while also building a powerful empire. When Mary Tudor dies, which means her widow is no longer an English monarch, her half sister Protestant supporter Elizabeth I becomes ruler of England. Philip proposes marriage, but she rejects his offer. Instead she challenges his Catholic ways with her Protestant ways leading her nation into being a rival maritime superpower until by 1588 he sends his powerful armada to conquer England.
This is a terrific historical account of how personal alliances were amongst the sixteenth century European monarchies. In some ways the tome feels like a romance novel as the widower pursues his former sister-in-law who rejects his advances. However, their dysfunctional relationship represents the war between Catholic and Protestant domination of Europe and the New World. Well written and fun to read, Elizabethan aficionados (sorry Philip but history is written by the winner) will appreciate this insightful look at the latter half of the sixteenth century when national conflict was personalized.

This book is another great entry in the Midnight Louie series, giving us the back story on Darcy McGill and Steven Austin. I really enjoy finding out about the characters before we got to know them in the other Midnight Louie "The cat and the..." books. If only I didn't have to wait until June to find out what happens next...
I'm glad they these books are now in print, as they give the series an added dimension.

Oueen of Hearts by Heather Gtaham, was a fun story. This is the second book I have read by this writer, and, I look forward to reading many more. She puts a lot of thought into the fun characters she creates. I like that.

Once again Heather Graham didn't dissappoint this reader. Queen of Hearts is not only a wonderful love story but has plenty of suspense. I liked the way the book grabbed me in the first chapter and never let up. The story takes place on a luxury yacht and it enhances the romantic setting. Rhiannan has been tragically hurt in the past and Kiel is the perfect man to bring healing. The story becomes very suspenseful in the middle and I found myself biting my nails. I highly recommend this book!
Book Description
"I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king."--Elizabeth I
Whether this sentence is an accurate transcription of Elizabeth's speech at Tilbury in 1588, it does characterize some of the struggles, contradictions, and cultural anxieties that dominated the collective consciousness of England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. In The Heart and Stomach of a King, Carole Levin explores contemporary representations of the unmarried, childless Elizabeth and focuses on the ways in which members of her court, foreign ambassadors, and a motley--and sometimes delusional--collection of subjects responded to her. Throughout, Levin's purpose is to explore how gender constructions, role expectations, and beliefs about sexuality influenced both Elizabeth's self-presentation and others' perceptions of her as a female, and Protestant, ruler.

Intersection of politics with gender.......2001-10-19
"I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have th heart and stomach of a King" - Elizabeth I
This quote from Elizabeth I says a lot about this book. Professor Carole Levin examines how Elizabeth I was able to use her role as a woman (where traditionally, the public viewed women as incapable, weak, dependant) to her advantage and at the same time she ruled like a "King". Levin also examined how Elizabeth was so successful in her reign and at the same time, she was not the typical "woman" of her time; she was childless, and unmarried. She portrayed herself as a "Virgin Queen" - as in she was married to her country.
It is important to note that this is not a biography of Elizabeth I but a book that gives a new perspective of Elizabeth I, that helps us to understand the overlapping of politics with gender and sexuality. Levin did an excellent job in using unconventional sources such as gossips, rumors, religious works, diplomatic correspondence that makes it a distinctive scholarly work. This book is also very easy to read, and even if you don't have a substantial backgroup in pre-modern European history, you will not have a problem in reading this book
Elizabeth Rocks--An Accessible Academic Work.......2000-10-12
This is a beautifully researched, well written, thought provoking study of how one of the most interesting and powerful women in history negotiated gender restrictions during her 45 year reign. Not just a standard biography, "Heart and Stomach" looks carefully at Elizabeth's use of gender perceptions and roles to present herself as the great queen that she was. I've used this book as a text in the classroom and I've recommended it to readers and scholars who are interested in all things Renaissance and in women's history. It's always a hit!
From an Elizabethan expert...........1998-02-28
Carole Levin's study of Elizabeth I is unprecedented. This study not only gives readers who are unfamiliar with Elizabeth an idea of her life and desires, but it is explicates the problems behind a woman being a monarch in her own right in 16th century England. If one is interested in both English Monarchy and Women's Studies, this study will be enjoyed.
Intriguing look at E's leadership style and politics.......1998-01-19
If you are intrigued by the life and reign of Elizabeth I, you will enjoy this book, whether you agree with all the author's conclusions or not. She gives some interesting insights to the challenges Elizabeth faced as a female monarch and describes how Elizabeth both compensated for her femininity and used it to her advantage during her reign. You will also get a taste of how Elizabethan culture affected the politics of her reign. The book takes an academic approach but is very readable by a layperson. I gave it a 7 only because it slows down in places and I think the author is reaching in making some of the connections between gender and politics that she does. But overall, interesting insights to Elizabeth as leader.
