Oprah Book Club® Selection, January 1997: "Mine is a story of craving; an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered." So begins the story of Dolores Price, the unconventional heroine of Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone. Dolores is a class-A emotional basket case, and why shouldn't she be? She's suffered almost every abuse and familial travesty that exists: Her father is a violent, philandering liar; her mother has the mental and emotional consistency of Jell-O; and the men in her life are probably the gender's most loathsome creatures. But Dolores is no quitter; she battles her woes with a sense of self-indulgence and gluttony rivaled only by Henry VIII. Hers is a dysfunctional Wonder Years, where growing up in the golden era was anything but ideal. While most kids her age were dealing with the monumental importance of the latest Beatles single and how college turned an older sibling into a long-haired hippie, Dolores was grappling with such issues as divorce, rape, and mental illness. Whether you're disgusted by her antics or moved by her pathetic ploys, you'll be drawn into Dolores's warped, hilarious, Mallomar-munching world.

Book Description

In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.

Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

4 out of 5 stars To be read again and again.......2007-08-13

I first bought this book when I was a teenager. I lent it to a friend, who lost it, so I recently re-bought it to read again. This was either my third or fourth time reading it.

I found that, as I had suspected, this book would still strike a chord with me in my mid-twenties, but in a different way. As a teenager, I identified with Delores's angst and sarcastic armor, and now I identify with the parts of the book in which she grows into a woman. Of course, being able to identify with the character is certainly not the only reason I continue to love this book.

As many have said, despite the depressing (and sometimes downright horrifying) events of Delores's life, she still manages to evoke a tremendous sense of humor (albeit dark humor most of the time). This book will make you laugh, make you cry . . . The symbolism of the whales in the book is beautiful and simple. As a person who didn't really "get" symbolism in high school, the symbols were easy to recognize and relate throughout the story. This is a wonderful read for those interested in psychology/sociology, because the reader picks up on things about Delores that she herself doesn't yet recognize.

Some may find this book somewhat disturbing. There is a lot of swearing and sex, but none of it gratuitous. It is all necessary for you to understand the beautiful and complex person that is Delores Price. I recommend this book to anyone--male or female--who has ever felt tremendous pain and wants to feel validated (and who is not easily offended!).

In conclusion, this is a book which I will continue to read until well in my 30's (and probably beyond, if the book lasts that long!), because each time I get something different and new out of it.

2 out of 5 stars anything but funny .......2007-07-08

After literally years of not reading a novel because I just didn't have time, I wanted a good read.

I picked this book up on an impulse, never having heard of Wally Lamb.

Throughout the misery of this book with a thoroughly unlikeable heroine, I kept thinking how strange it was that a woman (assuming Wally Lamb was female) would write something like this - neither I nor any woman I know would have thought, reacted or felt this way.

Well - once I finished (and the ending is LAME, to say the least!), the last page revealed that Wally Lamb is a middle-aged man with a family, which at least explained that part.

It was well written, if clichéd and predictable, but sickeningly graphic in parts. As for funny - unless you revel in seeing people heading for disaster and being jerks, I don't really see what's funny about it all.

4 out of 5 stars FUNNY, TRAGIC, IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT DOWN.......2007-07-03

This was a captivating book, narrated by a depressed, drastically overweight teenage girl named Dolores Price. The tale is so realistically and hilariously feminine that it's very hard to believe a man wrote the thing. I was so thoroughly caught up in this girl's story, and was truly rooting for her to claw her way to a happy ending. Funny, tragic, impossible to put down, and, as with all books that make my "best-loved" list, an ending of much-deserved grace.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it........2007-06-30

I found it rather intriguing that of the people I know and the reviewers who read this book either loved it or totally disliked it. I've even heard "I didn't get it". That suggests it really pushed some buttons.

5 out of 5 stars The most readable account of WWI.......2007-10-10

This book is easily the most reader friendly book on WWI - without being simplistic. The intermixture of historical background, actual events and historical analysis renders a perfect blend that will appeal to both academics and beginners.

This book covers the entire war, not just the western front. It is "objective" in the sense that the author does not assign blame - he tries to understand the events by looking at the historical background and the contemporary social, political and military climate. He then presents his analysis to the reader, not telling them "this is how it is", but instead allowing the reader to form his/her own opinion.

Having studied this period extensively on a university level, I've read tons of books on the subject. This is definitely the one that I recommend to anyone looking for a good overview of WWI and the events leading up to it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best WWI book I've read.......2007-08-17

I have read many WWI books prior to A World Undone and this is easily the best of the lot. Why? It is soooo clearly written. To me it reads almost like a novel where I can't put it down...even though I already know what's going to happen next! And he even makes the Russian front interesting! And I teach the subject in high school so I'm not looking for a light read. It doesn't get into minutia but it does give enough info to enlighten the reader. Now if you are an "expert" on WWI you may not find this book to your liking but even for me,a history teacher though short of being an expert, I found it extremely informative and very engrossing

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-07-23

If you're looking for an excellent history of The Great War or simply a great non-fiction book you've found it. In a nutshell what makes this book work is its balance, not necessarily in its handling of events and personalities - the author has no problem critiquing policies, people and decisions - but in the flow of the narrative. The author does an excellent job jockeying among the battlefields, world capitals, politicians, civilians, soldiers and generals, economies, technologies and much, much more with excellent writing, long and short chapters, (the latter used almost as footnotes to elucidate a point), without becoming bogged down in details or losing track of the narrative. (Just trying to describe how well the author succeeds in doing this is proving difficult.) Without getting too carried away I found the writing and this book very Catton-esque. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best Single Volume Books on the "Great War".......2007-07-06

Unlike most books on the "Great War" Meyer doesn't spend a lot of time discussing the battles as much as he spends describing what led up to the battles and their effects on the war overall. He has split the book into six sections; a prelude and one then for each year of the war. Interesting that each section is 100 pages (more or less) but he doesn't skimp on his writing. It is succinct and straightforward without being boring.

One of the better parts of the book is the background sections that are added after almost every chapter. They add a color and deeper understanding as to the motivation of some of the bigger players as well as added an additional layer of explanation as to why certain actions happened an why some of them were unavoidable.

Meyer doesn't pull punches on any of the players, those that he thinks were mostly self-serving (especially Haig, Mangin and Ludendorf) he tells us why. Those who were self-effacing he will explain their background and why they were that way. In the end he does a great service by zeroing in on the multiple failures of the Generals to understand how the new weapons of war (especially machine guns) had changed the rules of war.

Why did armies on the western front continue to charge directly at each other and lose men at an unbelievable rate without gaining anything of value? Because the Generals spent most of their time sitting in villas fantasizing about refighting the Napoleonic Wars (Haig especially wanted a breakthough where he could use the Cavalry); they never saw the conditions under which soldiers had to fight under (except maybe for Petain). They would develop grandiose plans that took in neither the weather nor the landscape. More than anything they worried about how they were viewed by their peers and not about what they were trying to accomplish.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Amazing, Outstanding.......2007-06-27

Really it is. This book was everything I hoped it would be. I bought it because of other customers' reviews and I wasn't disappointed. The most important aspect for me when reading history books like this, is that the author is a good writer that understands how to keep the reader interested, and Meyer excels at this. To avoid monotonously talking about failed offensive after failed offensive, Meyer incorporates "side chapters" where he gives background information on many different topics such as a short history leading up to the war on the countries involved, how warfare was conducted at the time, leading personalities, and the side effects of the war. Meyer covers the political, economic, and social effects of the war and how these aspects in turn affected the war. What I like best about it is how Meyer maintains a tension by pointing out all the close calls and blunders that could have turned the war in a different direction. This really gives the reader a sense of what was going wrong and why, and what it was like for the parties invovled. If you are interested in in WWI, you've found the only book you'll need.

5 out of 5 stars Before reviewing a book - READ, don't skim!.......2006-06-27

I almost didn't give this book a chance because of the poor reviews. Luckily I stumbled across it in a local used bookstore and decided for $2 it was definitely worth a read. I'm very glad I did. Something I like to do after finishing a book is scan the reviews to see if I'm in agreement. For this book, I found that most of the reviews were sadly exaggerated.

One of my biggest problems with people who read a romance set somewhere in the 19th century, is that many tend to judge it by 21st century standards. These people are generally not good critics for this time period and should stick with contemporary romances and stay away from the historicals.

While this wasn't one of my all-time favorite romance novels, I was disappointed with the lack of support it seemed to receive. It's entertaining - plain and simple. And why do we read romance novels if not to be entertained? Some of the points that I felt should be corrected are the fairly strong ones that would influence someone else buying or reading this book. Here are some of the things that have been criticized, but deserve an argument for the positive aspect of the novel and not just a one-sided approach to what happened:

1) Matthew calls her the daughter of a whore once (that I recall) throughout the course of the book. He mentions it to his father, not knowing that Jessie can hear him since she supposedly went to bed. This is a fact and while Matt does think of it and worry about it from time to time, Jessie is more stressed out about it than any of the other characters in the book.

2) While Jessica has fallen in love with Matthew at the beginning of the book, Matthew definitely doesn't have the same feelings for her - giving the book an edge that it needs (and not falling into a sappy pattern of having them both fall in love quickly).

3) They do not have an arranged marriage. There is not even a hint of it. His father would like the two of them to marry and says as much in the beginning of the book, but Matthew refuses and the story builds from there.

4) One reviewer claims that he "says this about her through out the whole book, which is very unflattering-good to swive but not to wive" - I never once read this phrase. While he does think that he would like her for a mistress, he doesn't ask her because he knows she's innocent and he wouldn't put her in that situation.

5) There is a segment of one chapter where he has sex with another woman (maybe about 2-3 pages for the entire scene, including them discussing that this will be their last night together). While I'm not a fan of reading about the hero and another woman, Jessie is openly looking for a husband during the London Season (with the support of Matthew's father). Matt has not made her any promises and has actually acted as a chaperone (to an extent) while she attends these functions. Reading about him and another woman was not my favorite thing about the book, but considering the time and the fact that the two main characters were not (and had not been) together, I didn't find it horrible. It's repeatedly stated in romance novels that men are going to find gratification where they can (at least before marriage) and I wasn't surprised that a scene like this happened to show up in a romance novel.

6) While Gwen and St. Cere are interesting (enough that I think they actually deserved their own book for their story), I don't think they took over the book at the end. They have a mild flirtation and share a brief, chaste kiss before going their separate ways. By the time they meet up again, Adam is becoming a changed man (for Gwen) - I would've liked to have seen more character development for him (in their own book) but it was a fun side story.

7) There was a spanking scene in the beginning when a younger Matthew and a 12 year old Jessie get into an argument (ending with the child getting a spanking for throwing rotten apples at his new naval uniform). There was also a teasing throwback to that later in the novel (after a grown up Jessica pours water on Matt's boots - on purpose) in which spanking is lightly thrown in as playful foreplay. I considered it a fun scene, showing that these two were having fun chasing each other. There is also a segment of the story that focuses on Gwen and her abusive stepfather. All three in hindsight show the difference between discipline/adult play/abuse and do a good job of deciphering what's considered right and wrong.

8) There is only one wedding in the entire book. And it is highly entertaining. While three marriages do take place, we only read about one actual wedding and the other three are mentioned after the fact.

9) Matthew NEVER rapes his wife. There is a chapter when he thinks she's being unfaithful and goes to confront her. She is initially a little nervous when she sees that something is bothering him, when he kisses her, she offers no resistance and is obviously turned on by it. The scene is passionate and hot and Matthew does vent his frustration, but it doesn't border on rape. He's careful not to hurt her, she's VERY into it (to the point that she worries that she's following in her mother's footsteps in the enjoyment of passionate sex). He definitely doesn't rape her - especially not twice (there isn't even another detailed love scene after that one).

10) For the most part, Matthew was a model husband. Never considers straying from his wife, never desires another woman, never abusive. Even going so far to make his wife happy that he takes in her niece and treats her like his own daughter.

11) While Matthew does leave England when the scandal comes out, he does so in search of his wife and 'daughter'. They know they have to stay gone for a long time while his father is more than happy to smooth things over (considering he always knew that this secret could come to the forefront).

12) While her brother is forced to join the navy with the hope that he doesn't survive, I thought he got off way too easily. Her brother is a man who continuously beat her as they grew up (giving her black eyes and beating her across her back), allowed his friend to rape her for a few coins (the 'friend' doesn't succeed, but it shows how he regards his sister), blackmails Jessie for money at every turn and he beats his daughter (a toddler) until she becomes mute. I was hoping for his brutal death at the hands of Matthew. I repeat - he got off way too easy.

I've never read any of Kat Martin's books before this one, but I think she is a talented author and this book is well worth the money. I'll be looking for her books in the future. This particular book, I would actually give four and a half stars for the simple fact that it ran a little long and could've been trimmed up (but like I said, if Gwen and Adam had their own story, it would have shortened this one).

It was a fun read and I'm sure I'll want to reread it in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Better than most of the reviews!.......2005-08-20

This is the modern world where women are no longer called whores but give themselves freely and no one dares to care. However, the setting of this book is regency and IS treated fairly by Kat Martin. Unfortunately, Jesse is the daughter of a whore. Unfortunately in regency time, people were considered to be like their parents unless proven otherwise-which did happen. I have read many regency books and the attitudes of male and female of the ton are consistant among the authors. Many of the ton did not marry for love or lust. They married to keep the lineage rich, landed, and/or titled. They were the "elite" and did whatever they wanted if they thought they could get away with it-much like royalty today (in fact the many of the ton were in queue for the throne). This book very well shows how people can change. I thought the father was wonderful. His protecting Jesse and wanting his son to be happy showed a lot of depth. His son's attitude was part the product of misconception about his father and stepmother, and part the product of the society as a whole. Kat Martin deserves credit for writing about regency. She shows the attitudes of the day, but she also show that some of the ton had depth to them. The characters are well-rounded and the book has a happy ending. The journey to this ending is well worth the read. In fact, it is one of my rereads.

1 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2003-12-18

My biggest problem with this book was that I didn't like the two main characters, Jessica and Matthew. Matt was pretty much an arrogant jerk throughout the book and Jessica's integity was lacking. I still don't understand why Jessica liked Matt anyway.I also tend to hate any book that has the "hero" having sex with other women, especially after he has met the "heroine". And I do not care to read about anyone else having sex besides the two main characters. In this book there are many such sex scenes written in great detail (yuck). The only redeeming part of this book was the romance between Adam and Gwen. I really wish the whole book had been about them!

2 out of 5 stars author totally wrecks her own book!.......2003-10-03

This book was so depressing it was terrible, not sexy at all. 1-Matthew is a self-righteous prig who calls her the daughter of a whore thoughout, to her face as well as behind her back

2-Jessica is so determined to become a lady that all the spark we see in her at the start of the novel dies

3-Jessica is already in love with him at outset of book so there is no development and joy of falling in love

4-He spends so much time avoiding her there is no chance for him to get to know her as other than a woman he wants in his bed but not to be married to; it is an arranged marriage.

5-He says this about her through out the whole book, which is very unflattering-good to swive but not to wive.

6-He has sex with his former mistress in flagrant and tasteless detail; it does not make any difference he keeps hoping it is Jessica as he does all sorts of depraved things to the woman all night.

7-Secondary couple St Cere and Gwen are FAR more exciting and take over the latter part of the book completely.

8-St Cere having sex with a mistress who reminds him of Gwen is also very off putting, why repeat what is already so gross.

9-the obsession with spanking ahd physical brutality to women throughout the book is gruesome

10-yet another wedding when Matthew's old decrepit father gets married

11-Matthew's new rape of his wife when he thinks she is being unfaithful-does this not once but twice.

12-Matthew always wanting his supposedly pure fiancee and finding Jessie lacking-he is continuously mentally unfaithful to her throughout the book

13-Said fiancee exposing all of her secrets-instead of Matthew proving he loves her no matter what, he HIDES in America for 2 years while his father whitewashes the scandal and bribes everyone or blackmails them into saying she was mistaken!!

14-His revolting behavior when they get married. she is no better. He gives her little choice, just physically overwhelms her, and then she lies to him to keep him.

15-His violence when he nearly kills her brother and then allows him to be press ganged into the navy in the hope that he will be killed so his wife and niece never have to wrry about the scandalous truth of her brith being brought to light-when of course it is anyway.

The only saving grace of this book is Gwen and St Cere. They alone get two stars. Jessie and Matthew can simply bore each other to death, and they would deserve each other for both being such ninnies. As for the author, this book is completely cliche ridden and so dull you can tell even she was bored with it at the end, since her heroine and hero go nowhere but down.

5 out of 5 stars Turn up the AC b/c this one is hot..........2003-07-04

I love Kat Martin, and have been reviewing all the books of hers that I read today. this is definitely one of my faves. She is just awesome. There is passion and romance, and you can just feel it coming off the pages as soon as you crack open the book. Grab this one when you can, and you won't put it down.

Good Time Girl is as heartfelt as it is sensual. At first Roxy and Tom experience exploding passion. As time goes by they still create a lot of heat in the bedroom but their relationship grows more tender and comfortable. Roxy seems to become a different person though and I found it odd that she changed so completely. Tom is a great guy. He is passionate and handsome, and his devotion to his family is really endearing.

Undone is a terrific anthology. Going All The Way is quick and intensely seductive. Her Secret Thrill is romantic and sensual and Good Time Girl is heartwarming and steamy. Undone contains three very fine stories from three wonderful authors.

Book Description

Seeing my mother as the lead story on the six o'clock news was no great cause for alarm...until the camera revealed her chained to a downtown monument!

I thought I knew my mother-but right now I'm not sure I even know myself. I'm currently a journalist for the Savannah Chronicle. And I don't need drama. Really, I can create my own. Who needs extra? But in spite of the mind-boggling events in Savannah this week, the truth is going to be revealed by one of its very own. I am Savannah...from Savannah.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christian Fiction.......2007-09-17

This book- along with the other two in the trilogy- are wonderfully written. YOu find yourself laughing outloud and becoming part of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Mother!.......2006-11-02

Moms have a way of embarrassing us. They don't mean it of course. They just do it accidentally in public places. And from what I've heard they still do it long after you've moved out and started your own family. But we all still love them.

Savannah (from Savannah) is alarmed to hear that her mother has chained herself to the monument of the 10 commandments outside of the courthouse. She can't believe that her beauty queen mother, who always has to look perfect, is willing to sit outside in public in the same clothes for days. Thus Savannah tries to distance herself away from her mother, dealing instead with a homeless lady who keeps asking her for food, a beauty queen killing her boyfriend and a new female reporter who's caught the eye of every guy in town. Eventually, Savannah comes to realize her mother's stance and respects her.

I liked how this story had Savannah come to better terms with her mother. In the first book, the reader is shown how the two are completely different. This story had Savannah finally understanding her mom, standing up for her, and learning to be proud of her. I found the scenes with Amber funny as usual. Between her rehearsed speech on Ronald Reagan and her chasing and beating up the purse snatcher I was in stitches. The scenes with the picnic with Grant was touching because it's hard to when someone you love has moved on with another. I was also relived that Savannah has decided to cut back on the coke. It's a wonder that she doesn't suffer from caffeine overdose or stained teeth!

I'd recommend this book for anyone who likes chick lit, mother-daughter stories or Southern culture.

5 out of 5 stars Must Love Fiction.......2006-08-10

When I read Savannah from Savannah and found out there was a sequel I wondered if it was possible to keep the same wit, style, pace a beauty of characters that had so captured me in Savannah. But Undone took me to an even different place. It gave me the opportunity to dig deeper into the well of Savannah and to honestly dig deeper into myself.
For all of the "politically" motivated perspectives on "The Ten Commandment" issue I found this offering to bring a refreshing approach to a very polarizing topic. If you're looking for brain science you won't get it. If you're looking for a political agenda despite some of the reviewers comments you don't get that either. What you get is a honest voice on how the Ten Commandments are broken in every day life. That I believe is at the core of this book. I have to be honest, whether, liberal or conservative, for or against, the issues of monuments being in "public" places this book just deals with the issue of our heart.
If that offends people, I'm not sure that is the author who has the problem

1 out of 5 stars Boring, don't waste your time.......2006-08-05

I should have known something was amiss when the only positive reviews the publisher could drum up was an anonymous homemaker in Baton Rouge and a nameless graphic designer in California.

Don't bother reading this book if you didn't read the first installment because the author makes too many references to the events in the first book and often it was hard to figure out what she was going on about.

The author tries too hard to make the main character Savannah funny, the result is you get a lot of one-liners and not much character development. Because of the lack of character growth and development, I found it hard to empathise with or care about Savannah or any of the other characters in this book. The pace of the book is very slow, and there are many scenes where nothing happens. I skipped and skimmed over pages and was still able to follow what was going on in the story. Alot of the story seemed to be just filler material, that had nothing to do with the plot but was just a chance for the author to air her own political views-which I might add I could have done without.

If you are looking for an entertaining work of fiction you'd better look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Avoid my Mom, avoid myself.......2006-07-10

In her second of the Savannah series, Denise Hildreth scores high marks once again. While the first book focused on Savannah's post college homecoming, job search and identity crisis, this book took us further along the path of a young woman who has gotten a new dream but is still struggling with putting the old dream to rest. Torn between laughter and tears the whole reading, Savannah hits home in her dealing with her mother's fanatical response to censorship by attempting pure avoidance tactics coupled with the desire to hang on to the comfortable past (even if it really is over and even if the present is SO much better).

Even though she is mortified by Victoria's behavior, deep down Savannah is really proud of her Mom. She and her Mom are enough alike and enough different that they clash. Savannah has strong opinions but expresses them very differently from Victoria, something which doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated.

My Mom and I are like Savannah and Victoria...fiercely proud of one another while clashing not so slightly from time to time. WHile this read provided so many fun visuals and hillarious situations that I had to quit drinking my Coke because I kept staining the pages of my book with my laughter induced sprays, it went a step deeper and did some "tilling" in my heart.

The leaving of a lasting impact is the mark of really great writing. Everyone should read this book for a great glimpse into the female coming of age process (especially in the South) that hooks you with laughter and keeps you with depth.

Way to go, Denise!

5 out of 5 stars An Undone Fairy Tale.......2007-02-05

FANTASTIC!! This is an excellent book with loads of humor. My 4, 5 and 7 year old all like this story. It is laugh out loud funny. At story time the kids BEG me to turn the page to see what will happen next even as the illustrator "Ned" is pleading for a delay. I have read this to both the Kindergarten and the first grade and they love it! A terrific gift for any reader or story time person. NO REGRETS!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful "read aloud" book.......2007-01-28

This book is an great choice for a short read aloud. The illustrations tell the "story" behind the story and children (and adults!) will be waiting to see what will happen next! It's perfect for children ages 5-10, but I have also used it with middle school students as an intro to a fairy tale unit.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining for both kids and parents.......2007-01-11

It is just enough of a silly book to put a smile on my face while previewing it for my nieces (6 and 4). Both really got a kick out of it,and were really enjoying the whole premise of it. It encourages kids to really scour the pictures to see what is different, and you see something different every time you read it. It is such a great unusual story. I would really recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Year old loves it.......2006-08-30

She begs to turn the pages each time the narrator cautions the reader to slow down and not turn the pages so fast!! She couldn't wait to take it to day care when it was her turn for stories.

I love that the princess, after failed attempts by various princes, gets the gumption to rescue herself. Then she saves the prince and the king. It is goofy and no real feminist would go for it for a few reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the princess was locked up and forced to bake for a greedy man.

It is useful to talk to the kids about how the king fooled the prince into building the moat, etc.

5 out of 5 stars undone & unbelievably funny (when you're six).......2006-05-22

Ian Lendler has joined the many children's authors attempting to revamp the fairy tale for the contemporary age. He has succeeded. Admirably. My [...] daughter thinks it's the funniest book we own, never realizing she's getting messages about independence, the risks & benefits of culinary skills, & battle tactics. I read it to her kindergarten class (alright, the read-aloud version of this book is becoming more like performance art than a quiet bedtime story) & had them hooked. It also has enoughlittle details to prevent the boredom of endless repetition. Because this book will be read again & again.

Book Description

It's supposed to be the biggest summer of Priscilla Jayne Morgan's life. She's on the brink of country music superstardom, yet she had to fire her crooked-manager Mama, and the tabloids are having a field day. Now her record label's hired a watchdog to escort her on her massive summer tour. And not just anyone, either—they sicced Jared Hamilton on her, the guy she once idolized more than anyone in the world.

Well, she doesn't care how hot he is. It's been too many years and too much water under the bridge, and she'll be damned if he gets to tell her what to do now.

Jared remembers exactly how headstrong P.J. can be and he knows she's going to be a handful. Problem is, he'd love to have his hands full of her. But he's cool. He's professional. And he's always in control.

He'd better be. Because for five long weeks he's stuck in close quarters with the wildest girl in show business.

4 out of 5 stars Danger, Romance with a Country Music Backdrop ! .......2007-10-10

On my trip to Nashville last fall I thought someone should write a novel about a country music start, I guess Susan read my mind. Priscilla Jayne Morgan's is up and coming country artist and finds herself saddled with hunky body guard Jared Hamilton. Now Jared and Jayne have a history and when thing heats up with crazed fan things get very interesting. I liked the secondary romance story as well. This is fun quick contemporary romance. Enjoy!

If you enjoy this genre check out ; Falling For Gracie by Susan Mallery, Have Glass Slippers, Will Travel' by Lisa Cach, Almost Perfect by Julie Ortolon, Saving Allegheny Green by Lori Wilde and Spirited Away by Cindy Miles.

4 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-10-08

If you enjoyed the first three books of the Marine series, then you will love this book. It was great to have a book that followed the background characters from before while keeping the theme from the other books. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Jared & PJ Grow Up.......2007-10-08

It's been 15 years since Priscilla Jayne Morgan last saw Jared Hamilton. She had been 13, living on the streets of Denver after her mother kicked her out, and Jared was a teenager on the run from the law, wanted for questioning in his father's murder. All these years later, PJ is on the verge of country music superstardom, just about to go on tour, when she fires her manager mother for embezzling. Her mother, in turn, goes to the tabloids and starts spreading all sorts of lies, so PJ drops off the radar and takes a little road trip, singing in honkytonks across the west. Because of the bad press from her own mother, PJ's record company panics and hires Semper Fi Security & Investigations to put a watchdog on her. Semper Fi is owned by an old friend of PJ's, Jared's brother-in-law, John Miglionni, and Jared himself is one of the agents, so it is Jared who shows up at PJ's door, ready for guard duty.

She is thrilled at first to see her old friend, until she finds out he's been hired to keep her in line. She makes his life difficult, at the same time she finds him very attractive. He is determined to rein in his attraction to her, simply because it's unprofessional. It's not easy for either of them to ignore the attraction, however, particularly since they were so close 15 years before. PJ is on top of the world when she finally gets the guts to make a move and Jared responds so enthusiastically, but when he pulls back emotionally, she knows all is not roses. Once she establishes her reputation on tour, she's about to send Jared packing, but then a bizarre fan starts sending her threatening photos and some other strange incidents occur, so he stays on the job as her protector. Now, the two of them are forced to spend more time together than ever, but will that be enough to get past Jared's glacial peak attitude?

Susan Andersen's last couple of books did a great job of delving into the lives and emotions of the characters. This book seems to have traded some of that character depth for vivid sex scenes. Some romance readers demand hot sex and prefer those scenes over character depth, but I guess I'm not one of them. While I didn't think this story was a disappointment, I was less thrilled about it than her Vegas showgirl series, where her talent really shines. Susan Andersen writes wonderful modern romances with strong female leads and delightful heroes, however, and this one is no exception.

3 out of 5 stars Worth Waiting For.......2007-10-01

Great book, but I have to give you a warning. If you didn't read the first, 'Hot & Bothered' then this follow up might leave you feeling a little left out of the loop. The main characters met as teenagers and most of their strong bond formed in the previous book, which was worth the read. So get that first one and then you'll be dying to continue with the story of P.J. and Jared.'Hot & Bothered' is book three of Anderson's Marine series but it stands alone enough that you don't have to read the first two unless you just feel like. I have to say though that P.J. and Jared was the best thing that came out of the whole series.

2 out of 5 stars Fizzled out.......2007-09-26

This book started out good but then kind of fizzled. The ending just left you flat.
