The SCP Helped This Soldier.......2007-08-23
I didn't buy my copy of the SCP; rather, I found it in the military chapel in Kuwait when I was on my way from there to Afghanistan. I'm guessing that it was provided by the Knights of Columbus or some other group, or maybe an individual or parish. Whatever the case, I pray God's blessings on them! The SCP kick-started my prayer life over there. It went to the mess hall with me for breakfast and supper, and was the last thing I read before I turned out the light to sleep. The advantages of this book are that you can carry it with you (it fits neatly into the cargo pockets of DCUs and ACUs), and that it is more psychologically accessible. I'll probably break down and get the four volume set, but I have the feeling that the smaller version will be the more used.
Excellent appetizer.......2007-07-21
While not very sure about my ability to understand or find the time to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, this book has proven a great way to start.
It took me 45 minutes to pray the first time, following the ordinary and flipping like crazy. Some online LOTH sites helped. EWTN in particular has Morning and Evening prayer (audio) on the left hand sidebar of their homepage. I don't think they use SCP (they might be using Christian Prayer) but the texts were so similar it didn't much matter for learning purposes.
So now I've been praying it for a year and a half somewhat regularly, and it's become the backbone of my scripture/prayer life at home. There is no substitute for having scripture in your heart, and although limited, this little book proves its worth as the psalms and canticles are gradually memorized. Then you have them with you wherever you go. I've never been able to memorize scripture in any other format. Now I could rattle off the whole of Psalm 51 and several passages of the New Testament, as well as other frequently occurring texts.
The only problem now is that I chafe a bit when it comes to seasons like Lent and Advent where you only have seven days of readings and you have to repeat them every week (SCP includes Night Prayer, which gives only 7 days of readings, but I have since learned that that is all there are anyway). Plus I would love to read more extensive quotes from saints or the Fathers. And I hear the hymns in the full-size LOTH are more classical and beautiful, although without music.
No typos that I have found. Print/formatting is easy to read. No art, just little graphics. No sheet music. Could use an additional ribbon marker (there is only one).
If I had a genie in a bottle, and I could have one wish granted as regards this little gem, it would be a more traditional translation that elevates the language. I mean, it's hard to raise your spirit to God when you come across one of these dogs:
Psalm 72
O God, give your judgment to the king,
to a king's son your justice,
that he may judge your people in justice
and your poor in right judgment.
There are a few passages with these awful redundancies, or particularly uncreative or clunky phrasing. I've grown so used to it now that I don't mind it much, but I long for a more beautiful, flowing translation.
Still, an unbeatable deal, and a great way to get into the Divine Office.
Highly recommended.......2006-06-14
I highly recommend Shorter Christian Prayer. Praying the Morning, Evening, and Night prayers daily (and uniting these prayers of the Church with clergy and laity throughout the world) has been and continues to be a great blessing for me, to the greater glory of God. It has greatly enhanced my prayer life, deepened my spiritual life, and is bringing me ever closer to the Lord. The daily Psalms and Canticles are rich in beauty and their splendor grows with familiarity. I especially appreciate that beneath the title and theme of each Psalm and Canticle there is a brief reflection that relates the Psalm or Canticle to its New Testament (New Covenant) significance.
The book is of very good quality in the leather cover, pages, and layout. Could use more than one ribbon-marker, but a well-placed holy card does the trick just as well!
Very edifying and well worth the effort. Highly recommended.
Practicing the Presence of God.......2004-04-02
The Liturgy of the Hours is a great stepping stone for transforming our entire lives into prayer. The single volume Christian Prayer is a good starter. With the discipline of sticking with it daily, we tend to thirst for more. Then the four volume, more extensive set becomes a valuable purchase. The organization of its volumes into the various liturgical seasons better than the single book enhances our ability to focus on them.
Where can this lead? By dedicating each thing we think, say or do as a pray offering to God, we gradually grow into a state of constant prayer. It isn't necessary to be directly thinking about God as we pursue each task of our daily lives. Simply their dedication makes of them a prayer. The result is that we become consciously aware of God's presence on an ongoing basis. It's like when a person is standing behind us. They see everything we do, hear everything we say but we can't see them. Yet we KNOW they are there, and are aware of it at all times.
Once we are constantly mindful of God's presence, we allow Him to begin the purgative process, as St John of the Cross explains it. We think of hell as a 'firey furnace,' yet in the New Testament fire refers more often to God's love than anything else. In Hebrews and Wisdom 3, Scripture speaks of gold being purified in fire. Gold jewelry is an alloy with another metal, to enable crafters to shape it into a permanent, hardened state since gold is a soft, maleable metal. When we heat it up to 2500 degrees, though, it returns to its molten or liquid state, and the other metal (or 'impurity') easily separates from the gold, leaving only the pure, 24 carat gold.
Constant awareness of God's presence allows Him to begin to burn away our impurities by exposure to the fire of His perfect love. We feel the dissonance of everything that we think, say or do with His love when they fail to conform with that love. This spiritual discomfort becomes a gentle pressure, as we naturally begin to conform our lives to that fire of love. As we yield to His love and permit Him to transform our lives thus, we grow closer to entrance into perfect union with Him, which is essentially what heaven is. John of the Cross notes that this is what happens in Purgatory, but that we can make greater strides in that process during this life.
One by-product of this type of spiritual growth is that we acquire a keener sense of what God's will is. In the Last Supper discourse of John's Gospel, Jesus repeatedly says that whatever we ask for in His Father's name shall be done for us. St John qualifies that, though, in his first Letter by adding that what we ask of God must be in accordance with His will. As we conform our lives to His love, we increasingly feel more exactly what is in concert with it and what is not. Thus, we become more refined in terms of the prayers of petition that we ask of Him.
The Liturgy of the Hours is an excellent way to strive toward the prayer discipline that lets God draw us into that deeper spirituality, and ultimately into perfect union with Him for eternity.
Travel friendly and very convenient!.......2003-06-14
This book is wonderful for those of us whom don't have the time to pray the complete Liturgy of the Hours. Very compact and travel friendly, I am able to pray during my morning and evening commute to/from work...
Published for use in all the US Roman Catholic Dioceses (and many international ones too) and fully approved by the Bishop's Committee on the Liturgy, National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Excellent and user friendly. Highly recommended.

Whether you want to get a more steady form of Prayer, or if you just want to grow closer to God, this book is one of the best ways to do it. I first encountered this "Four Week Psalter" when I was on a Retreat, and the first time I prayed it, I immediately fell in love with it's beauty and incredible simplicity.
This book will help you to enhance your Prayer Life through a lovley, shorter form of the Liturgy of the Hours.

Cheap thrills.......2007-10-02
I found this novel to be gratuitously graphic. Remember when an author allowed for a little sexual tension which kept you reading? Well there was none of that here because no lust went unsatisfied with our hero and heroine, and frankly it became boring in addition to being graphic.
I was also disappointed in the trite and repetitive dialogue and the lack of character development in Cutler Mcfarland. Wouldn't you have expected our hero to at least wrestle with the possibility of not revealing what he new about his paternity to his devoted mother and the man who raised him and was the only 'father' he ever knew. It seemed that he blasted ahead, satisfying his own curiosity regardless of the impact on his 'parents'. This is not what I would have expected in a hero that is otherwise presented as a man of character.
My sisters and I have a book club and this was chosen, and for that reason alone, I finished reading Evening Hours.
Needed some editing.......2006-09-11
As others have commented, there are too many things going on - several of which have very little relevance to the plot. I could see where the author was going with some of them - for example I think the subplot of finding drugs in the modeling agency was supposed to show how the heroine would handle a crisis - but she never really handles it. Ultimately, the crisis is resolved badly and I think makes the heroine look incompetent.
However, what really bothered me was some inconsistent details that should have been edited out. For example, early in the book we are told one of the main characters is 60 and his mother was a prostitute who died of AIDS. This means she would have had to have died sometime after the mid 1980's, when he would have been in his 40's making his mother a 60+ year old hooker? Possible, but then it is clearly implied that she died when he was young. Something doesn't add up. There are other things like this that just should have been edited out along with half the sub-plots.
The most interesting person in the book is actually the hero's mother. D
Too many sub plots not developed.......2006-06-07
Injured in a debilitating car accident years earlier that resulted in the death of her mother, Kaylee Benton's dreams of becoming a fashion model are cut short. But this does not preclude her from founding her own successful Houston-based modeling agency with financial backing from her wealthy "uncle" Drew. She is in line for a lucrative contract with Versace, and soon finds herself on the receiving end of attention from sexy DA Cutler McFarland. When her father notices her interest, he vows to get the two together.
As Cutler pursues her, she slowly starts to fall for him. Kaylee's father happens upon information regarding Cutler's paternity that could prove humiliating for his family and could derail his reelection campaign. He gives Cutler and ultimatum - marry Kaylee or he will reveal the secrets of Cutler's past. At first Cutler balks at him, until he discovers that it is true and wants to spare his mother humiliation. Convinced that Kaylee is not in on the blackmail (and since he is attracted to her), Cutler pulls out all stops and the two marry. Cutler never intends to fall for his wife, but he soon does. But what happens when Kaylee learns the truth about her husband's motivations?
Several sub plots are not fully developed (like the two career making/breaking cases he is involved in; the loss of his mentor/political backer; her modeling agency may be involved in drug dealing). These are touched on, then abandoned or not fully developed. I would have liked to at least see Cutler in court during one of the controversial cases. While I liked the story, in the end, I was a little disappointed with the plot execution.
A decent read but nothing special.......2006-02-13
I usually like the types of books that have a bit of suspense along with the romance and this one didn't. Although the characters were likeable and their romance sweet, I felt like the author had too many subplots going on at once and not enough detail about what was going on outside of their personal lives. They both had a lot going on at work but it really wasn't explored. Instead most of the focus was on the main characters and somewhat on the families. It just left too much to the imagination. Still, if you're interested in pure sweet romance with intriguing characters this would be a great read for you.
Great Contemporary Romance!.......2005-11-26
Kaylee Benton's dreams of being a fashion model ended with a terrible car accident. She has adapted by running a top modeling agency. But Kaylee has never been able to form a relationship with a man due to the scars she believes no man will ever be able to accept and her inability to have a child. So when she meets devastatingly attractive Cutler McFarland and he begins to show an interest in her, she doesn't take his flirting seriously. However her father takes notice of her attraction and is determined that his daughter find happiness in her life. Her father quickly digs as deeply as he can into Cutler's past to find something to use against him. He goes to Cutler with an ultimatum. Convince Kaylee that he has fallen madly in love with her, marry her, and make her happy or he'll use the information that he has found to destroy Cutler's mother. Left with no choice, Cutler sets out to woo Kaylee. Kaylee soon finds herself under full scale assault by Cutler. Already half way in love with him, she soon falls completely in love and before long she agrees to marry him. Cutler was already fiercly attracted to Kaylee before her father's interference, perhaps even on his way to falling in love with her so it doesn't take long for what started out as blackmail on Cutler's end has turned into something more as he begins to truly and deeply love his wife. But if she ever finds out the truth behind their marriage, will they be able overcome the lies?
Evening Hours is a fine example of why I pick up a book just because it has Mary Lynn Baxter's name on it. The sensual tension between Kaylee and Cutler stands out from their first meeting making me want them to find their happy ending. While Kaylee's father may have had the best of intentions, his meddling could ultimately cause harm to a relationship that may have flourished without his interference. All of this makes Evening Hours a contemporary romance that grabbed my attention and held it until the last page.

Book of Hours.......2002-08-24
When I joined the Church I was given a book titled "A Short Breviary" and it was the foundation of my prayer life. But after awhile the 8 hours ecame too inconvenient for me. Now I have discovered Dr. Storey's 2 volumes of "An Everyday Book of Hours" and "A Seasonal Bok of Hours" and they are a delight. Once again I am praying with the Church. My thanks to you and to Dr. Storey.

Beautifully Simple.......2002-08-07
I found the book helpful, simple, and beautiful. Its format is to guide one through the prayers with short, easy to understand instructions and descriptions. While I have used it alone, I would recommend it more for a group. Music is printed in the several forms: chant, four part hymns, and melodies. The accompanying CD includes all of the music, sung either by a soloist or small vocal ensemble. While the CD is designed as a guide through the book, it might well be left playing while one is doing other things. It is lovely.
The book beautifly fulfills its purpose of providing worshippers with "a user friendly foundational structure for the Liturgy of the Hours." I recommend it without hesitiation.

Many of us have lost hope of ever developing a liturgical prayer life. We love the Mass but we don't know how to extend the liturgy to the rest of our day. We have heard of the Liturgy of the Hours, but it seems so complicated, with all its flipping of pages to find the right psalms, hymns, responsories, canticles, and readings!
Now there's an answer. In response to the Holy Father's encouragement for the laity to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, this beautiful edition (approved by the Church) makes praying Sunday Evening Prayer a breeze! Each Sunday of the year is laid outstart to finishon two facing pages. Praying the Liturgy of the Hours couldn't be easier!

A Great Blessing!.......2005-01-19
Prayer has always been an important tool for anyone of the faith. Prayers sung only increases the depth of one's prayer life, and brings us closer to our Creator.
In this work, we have laid out for us an entire year of Sunday Vespers.
The work is concise and easy to use, no flipping through pages in confusion; each Sunday Vesper is clearly marked, written on two adjoining pages, so the book can be opened and easily followed by all those joining in prayer.
This is a must have for those who wish to join in with others around the world in prayer and unity. A great work that the entire family, friends and fellow prayer companions, can follow along and share in the experience
A beautiful book and a great aid to your prayer life. Recommended!
Sunday Vespers.......2004-11-10
This is a beautiful book!!! It is easy to follow with specific prayers for each Sunday evening. This is a great way to start your week off right adding to your Sunday mass but in a more intimate setting praying together as a family.
Great Prayer Resource.......2004-10-29
When I first heard of this book I immediately wrote to the publishers asking where I could buy it from in England UK! Now I have my own copy and am thrilled with it's very beautiful presentation and practical usefulness as a way of joining in the world-wide prayer of the Church on Sunday evenings. It's a small but significat way to help keep Sunday special, making time in the evening to pray. It's a great aid for my husband and I, newly married. We're looking forward to praying Sunday Vespers with a family in due course. I sincerely hope this book gets the attention and notice it so rightly deserves.
The Right Book at the Right Time.......2004-10-27
Be you Catholic or Christian (as this book was designed and was meant for -- but it is not limited to -- Catholics) you will find The Evening Prayerbook: Sunday Vespers a unique and great (as well as beautiful) resource and addition to your prayer life.
For Catholics, it has always been the tradition of the Church to make the Psalms the main texts through which Her voice is heard. Thus, the Psalms are intimately intertwined in the Church's Liturgy and prayers throughout the year, as the 150 Psalms flow from one liturgical season to the other. Christians whose love for the Bible is great, recognize together with Catholics the voice of Christ Himself in the Psalms, speaking to the Father and teaching us to pray. The Psalms, then, are central to the life of the Church. Their prayer and recital, mostly by monks and religious, have been, throughout the ages the pulse -- an indication as it were -- of the health of the Mystical Body of Christ marking the beating of the Body's Heart in their regularity and beautiful cycles. If the Church in Her Wisdom considers the Psalms essential to Her Life requiring Her priests and religious to recite them daily in the Liturgy of the Hours, should we not think about them in the same way?
I find Evening Prayers: Sunday Vespers a beautiful, easy to use resource to pray within the family in union with the Church. Beyond the time devoted to Mass and the Liturgy on Sundays one can, through Sunday Vespers, sing to God the Father the love of God the Son "in the words Our Saviour gave us" (and in a beautiful format!). This book is a great way to pray and be heard for no words spoken to God are more effective than those inspired by Himself. I deeply recommend the Evening Prayers: Sunday Vespers to all.

I think this is a great resource for people new to the city or who may be unfamiliar with the diverse possibilities in their search for spaces condusive to time together.
Romance 101.......2000-04-16
No guy should be without this book. I bought it on a lark and couldn't put the book down. The author gives us guys so many no-brainer ways to put a little romance into our lives. I recently began dating a wonderful woman and, thanks to this book, she thinks I'm a Cassanova! I like the way the author Miriam Carey gives *specific* places to go and things to do. Believe it or not, when I try to think of where to take my lady, my mind goes blank. Movies are about all I can think about. Now, with this book, I've already taken her swing dancing, and on a romantic lunch break picnic near where she works. I highly recommend this book to guys and girls too.
Fatuous and Fattening.......2000-03-28
This book might better have been titled "52 Romantic EATINGS," because all of the food-obsessed author's recommended dates are primarily about chowing down. None of these activities will spark or enhance romance--people who truly love each other don't need themed activities in order to enjoy being together. Only the truly desperate or romantically challenged would resort to the ridiculous "romantic recipes" in this book.
