Book Description

In preparation for their long-awaited wedding day, Dayne and Katy are determined to keep the ceremony a secret from the paparazzi. Their relationship grows closer and stronger as they plan together, but in the end it takes the help of the Baxter family and many of the CKT kids so that they’ll even have a chance at a private wedding. John Baxter is thrilled that his oldest son will be settling down a few miles away, but he isn’t sure how any of his kids will handle a situation he can no longer run from--the feelings he is having for his friend Elaine. In the meantime, the Flanigan family is struggling with their young boarder, Cody Coleman, Jim Flanigan’s star receiver. After an alcohol overdose, Cody fights for his life. Only God’s grace and a miracle can bring him back from the brink of death--physically and spiritually.

Karen Kingsbury has done it again..This book is AMAZING....I laughed, cried & now look at the sunrise in a different way..

5 out of 5 stars Romantic to da core!.......2007-09-29

A much better series. I was moved. I was bored somewhere in the middle of the firstborn series and was realy praying this would be different. Thankfully it was!

4 out of 5 stars good way to spend an afternoon.......2007-09-15

I read this in one afternoon and enjoyed it. The plot _is_ a bit thin, but Sunrise seems more like a transitional book, mainly written to wrap up the Firstborn series and lay the groundwork for the Sunrise series. As such, it works well. There were some minor inconsistencies (the press is watching the Baxter family to guess where the wedding is, but Katy's parents can take a commercial jet to Mexico with no problems? Wouldn't somebody be watching them, too?) but all in all, I love the book, and appreciated it more after reading Summer.

5 out of 5 stars Sunrise.......2007-09-15

I was very pleased with the product; it was in great condition and arrived at just the right time. The quality of the book was excellent, better than I had expected.

5 out of 5 stars The Baxters continue.......2007-09-13

Karen Kingsbury continues the Baxter family lives. It is a very good read and inspirational. Will keep buying the stories.

kind of vague not as much technique as I expected, but i dont regret buying it

1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2007-09-20

I was very disappointed by this book and don't agree with the glowing reviews.

I am a photographer who was interested in the difference between film shooting and digital shooting in a wedding situation.

I found this book to be VERY basic and is more appropriate for someone who is brand new to the wedding photography.

Even with that I found the information stated the obvious. For example, I think working with flash to be one of the more challenging areas of being new to digital. There were some basic instructions and some pictures that would be in my waste basket not shown as some "cool" effect.

All in all this is a general text for someone who may never have been to a wedding and/or has very little exposure to wedding photography. I would not recommend this book to anyone above the amateur level.

1 out of 5 stars Worst photography book I've tried.......2007-09-06

I find it hard to find anything to agree with the positive reviewers. After reviewing this book, I conclude that some photography books are just about selling books, not valuable instruction. This one does not provide anything but the most very basic input. If you are not completely new to photography, then this book is probably too basic for you.
I purchased this book because I have a couple of weddings booked as an assistant & 2nd shooter, and like you wanted something to "bone up" on that I may otherwise miss. I flipped thru each section, but decided to return the book instead of spending valuable time reading further. This book is so basic, covering the most basic camera functions and simple personal interactions, that it is not worth the time to read thoroughly. My teenage daughter has taken some high school basic photography classes, and politely commented that "this book is silly".

A wedding shoot is critical to the couple, and there are no 2nd chances for a re-shoot. If you really feel the need to cover the basics, I suggest one covering general photography elements, practicing, and returning to weddings after those become second nature. Although a different genre, I can recommend Michael Freeman's "Light & Lighting in Digital Photography".

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!.......2007-09-04

I am new at wedding photography so I purchased this book. It is absolutely the best one I have read so far. It covers everything! Glen Johnson walks you through every aspect of the photography business. It is much more than a "wedding" photography book. It covers everything- from equipment to lighting to everything. I love it!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Glen Johnson knows what he's talking about..........2007-08-28

Very inspiring book and one thing I've noticed about Glen is he is all about helping others. Many photographers want to keep the secrets to themselves, but Glen let's all the good stuff out in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in Wedding Photography as he gives you such a wide range of information covering nearly every aspect of the wedding photography project to completion and gives several recommendations on current products on the market. I even noticed after reviewing Glen's website that he offers this book signed by him from his website. It's much more affordable here on Amazon, but it's different to get the signed version. My hat's off to Glen for an outstanding book.

I recommend this book to the non-traditional photographer. This would appeal more so to the photo journalist or the portrait journalist as this is Glen's photography style. Thanks for putting this book together Glen!

I loved the Instyle Weddings Edition. It was very thorough and nice hard cover quality. I would definately recommend this to all bride and grooms to be!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a book!.......2006-04-24

I saw this book in Amazon together with Martha Stewart's Wedding Book and since I admire Style's Wedding magazine, I decided to purchase this book. What a great find! It has ideas on every aspect of the wedding. Lots of very cool ideas. I particularly like the ideas for photos and beauty. Definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book for Budding Bridezillas.......2006-01-25

If you are planning a monster wedding (you know who you are, Bridezilla) this is the manual of choice. "In Style: Weddings" uses their format of large, beautiful photographs and snappy sections on everything from what the best man does in the wedding to how to do your makeup for the big day.

The sections are lavishly photographed. The cake chapter has pictures of fondant-iced fantasy cakes--but it also has an idea for a tower-of-cupcakes that might suit a budget affair (more on this later.)

In Style doesn't fail to include a lot of dishing about what this and that celebrity did for their wedding, which will add to any bride-to-be's dreaming about her big day. There are sections on hair, with very pretty ideas for how to make an up-do with ornaments. A section on makeup and one IMPORTANT section on dress selection. Hint: tall and big brides should stay away from those Cinderella ballgowns with the huge chiffon skirts, lest they look like a battleship being launched. Likewise, it was rather enlightening about how many celebrities these days choose to be married in what to me looks like their slip or nightie. There are hints as well for the dresses of the attendants. And a nice selection of items that could be used as wedding favors and groom's gifts.

There was less devoted to menus than I'd like to see, but plenty on the types of venues (outdoors and indoors.) There were lists for planning. And a wonderful section on flowers with photos that would make anyone drool.

While I give this book a top five star rating, I'd like to point out to the star-struck bride that weddings these days average about twenty-seven THOUSAND dollars. That's a lotta scratch, my matrimonially-inclined readers. Consider than this amount, invested and earning a modest six percent would double in about twelve years. So consider that perhaps the ideal wedding might be a pigroast under a tent with a local bluegrass band. Costing a lot less than the average. Think about how much a big wedding is worth to you before you get in over your head.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed!.......2007-07-10

The cute title lured me in to buying this book although the price was much higher than the other flower girl books listed on amazon.com. The only other thing I liked about this book was the introductory page. There is a place to write the date of the wedding, bride & groom's name along with the flower girl's name. From that point on the book was a pure disappointment. I had ordered 4 different books on being a flower girl and this one ranks at the bottom of my list! It lacks a good explanation of the role of a flower girl, has no story line, and will not keep my 4.5 year old granddaughter's interest for one minute. I tend to think that if something cost more it will be better...not in this case! Here is a perfect book on being a flower girl with a fun story and explanation on what happens before, during and afer a wedding. If you are looking for a book to help your little flower girl understand her role buy this:

5 out of 5 stars My Kids Love It!.......2007-03-03

Kids don't have to be preparing for a wedding to appreciate the positive, inspiring words and images of the book. I love the narative which includes things like sports, science and entrepreneurship along with the classic "girl" stuff. I even read the book to my two boys so that they can understand that girls are a lot like them in experiences and aspirations.

3 out of 5 stars 10 Neat Things About Being a Flower Girl.......2006-03-23

Was a little disappointed with this book selection. Bought as a little gift for my flower girls and although they were 7,5 and 3, it was really only meant for the 3-yr-old. Nice illustrations...just didn't care for the list of 10 things!

5 out of 5 stars How Great to Have These Books at My Wedding!.......2004-12-11

I was recently married and was given these books by a friend. I had several children in my ceremony and I wanted to make the day as special for them as it was for me. The faces on my little flower girls lit up when I gave the books to them at the rehearsal dinner. They read and re-read them that night; they would not put them down! The day of the wedding the girls could not wait to perform their duties and I honestly feel that the books helped them understand the significance of the occasion. Even better, they were good as gold and knew exactly what to do. These books are great and were a wonderful way to wholeheartedly include the girls in the ceremony, as well as give them something fun to do at the boring rehearsal dinner!

2 out of 5 stars Not a great book .......2004-12-09

I purchased this book for my 4 year old niece for upcoming wedding and the 10 Cool things about being a ring bearer for my fiance's 8 year old nephew and was disappointed with both books. The text is virtually identical in both books (which wouldn't be a problem since they are going to two different homes) but the text isn't very compelling and is much too specific. I heard multiple comments of "we aren't doing that," "you're my aunt, not my sister" etc. She enjoyed another book I also bought which told the STORY of a young flower girl -- and she could relate to "she's just like me" instead of the confusing first person narration of this book. It DOES make a difference to a child if the narration is first or third person since they often view characters in stories as friends.

Here's what you'll learn:

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars for Pat Allen.......2007-09-19

I know this book isn't for everyone. The information in it can ruffle more than feathers. Yet, in my experience of dating - and beyond - I find it to be true. Personally, when I follow Dr. Allen's tenents I get what I want in a relationship - and more! I find it true for myself that when I let a man cherish me, I feel respected. And when I respect my man, he feels cherished. Like skiing - at first it's a bit counter-intuitive. But when I put it into practice, I saw the benefits.

It was a true honor when Dr. Allen endorsed my book Never Trust A Man In Alligator Loafers. We're all learning, growing, and trying new things. I applaud any woman who commits to her own happiness - whatever that may be.

1 out of 5 stars Choose only one - being respected or cherished.......2007-02-09

Judging High School science fairs and watching "Teen Jeopardy" takes me back to the time when my friends and I were full of energy and curiosity. Well, Pat Allen has a disheartening message for such women: unless you hide your smarts, expect to be respected but not cherished in romantic relationships. According to Allen, a relationship requires that one partner be the consistently receptive (read passive) "female" energy who vetoes what the active partner ("male energy") initiates. This goes from picking which movie to watch to figuring out major life plans.

What hope of being cherished is there for the bright, energetic females I see all around me? Well, you may be a company VP, Neurosurgeon or Police Detective. But prepare to act the '50's housewife in your relationship, so that hubby/bf doesn't view you as an honorary man and becomes confused as to how to treat you except - you guessed it - as a Man! Maybe some women have the energy to maintain a Jekyll and Hyde persona 24/7/365. Consider the logistical pretzel twisting required to maintain your feminine energy, which I'd love to see Dr. Allen address. Let me come up with a real-life scenario to illustrate my point : is a "feminine energy" CEO expected to structure her life so that her husband never hears her end of the conversation when she call a coworker from home, 'cause you don't want him to guess how competent, smart and decisive you really are? How delusional do you really expect a man to be about his girlfriend or wife's decision-making capabilities once he's remotely aware of her high responsibility profession? If you are one of those chameleons, go ahead and read this book if you want your man to cherish you. Otherwise, don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Every Woman Should Read This.......2007-01-10

Wow, what a great book. Every woman should read it. If you keep falling for the wrong guy and having sex way too soon, then getting dumped, you need to read this. Women have to avoid sex with a man they meet until they find out his TRUE INTENTIONS. If you want a long term relationship leading to committment and marriage, then you HAVE to read this book because if that is not what HE wants, then you waste yourself and your precious body on a dead-end relationship. The book tells you what to do and what NOT to do. Read it, and change your life for the better.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2006-08-16

This book will help you understand masculine/feminine relationships----not the way you'd "like" them to be but the the way they are in reality. Through understanding the reality of relationships, you'll be able to keep a stable relationship and even "change roles" when appropriate. Awareness is better than "unawareness". Recommended. Book Description

The three biggest trends in weddings today are simplicity, personalization, and color. Wedding design expert Karen Bussen highlights these elements as she shows couples how to design their own weddings without going crazy or broke.

Simple Stunning Weddings is the first wedding design book to focus on the where of the wedding. Location is the first and most important decision brides and grooms must make: everything else flows from that. Bussen showcases 12 popular wedding settings, including the city loft, country inn, art gallery, botanic garden, and private club, and demonstrates how to make them extraordinary. With the site as the starting point, she creates unifying themes with color, flowers, and personal touches. She explains how to deal with vendors, how to spend the wedding budget, and when it makes sense to hire a specialist.

Sharing all her trade secrets, Bussen teaches the power of simplicity and the impact of color, which can be tailored to any budget, always to stunning effect: substituting cotton tablecloths for silk in the same eye-dazzling color combinations, for example, or creating striking flower arrangements using only one or two types of blooms. Whether for a barefoot union on a beach or a formal affair in a hotel ballroom, this fully illustrated, information-filled book is like having Bussen on hand as your personal wedding designer. AUTHOR BIO: KAREN BUSSEN is one of Manhattan's most exciting wedding designers. Her work has been featured in such magazines as Modern Bride, Martha Stewart Weddings, Home, Food & Wine, and Interior Design. In the past six years, she has designed more than 100 weddings.

ELLEN SILVERMAN's photographs have appeared in Charmed Bracelets and New Soul Cooking (both STC).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Wedding Planning Bible.......2007-08-17

I used this book to plan my wedding that happened in May '07, which was done without a wedding planner. My wedding was held in a historic, beautiful synagogue and historic beautiful hotel (similar to the country club chapter). So many of our guests have commented directly to us or my parents about how beautiful our wedding was -- and I have to say this book helped me more than any other. Simple Stunning Weddings guided most of my decor decisions over the 9 months that I spent planning our wedding.

For starters, I used this book to communicate with my florist -- it was extremely helpful for that. So many of my friends and family have commented on how stunning our flowers were -- we used fresh seasonal flowers in colors that suited our venue but they were of a style and in containers similar to the ones presented here.

In addition, her ideas about where to splurge and where to save for a given venue were invaluable. Not only did they save money, but they also saved time and stress.

Her suggestion of bringing old family photos into a reception site was one of the biggest hits of my wedding -- both my husband and I found old photographs of our family going back to the early 20th century and had them displayed on a large table. People couldn't stop talking about them -- not just our relatives, but friends too. That suggestion cost us about $50 -- how great is that? Her idea to hire a swing band to harmonize with the classic space was another giant hit -- the dance floor was full until the band stopped at midnight.

I didn't copy her ideas, rather I adapted them for the synagogue and ballrooms that we used -- and I found it quite easy to do so. It is so easy to be overwhelmed by all the choices around planning a wedding -- everything from table linens to wineglasses to lighting to picking a band -- it was wonderful to have her photos and text to guide and influence our decisions.

I spent nine months being fairly wedding obsessed while planning our wedding -- I purchased many books and magazines, spent lots of time figuring out our options and looking around for ideas, and I have to say that the ideas presented here were the best resource I found. My other favorite book (in a very different vein) was Bridal Bargains -- it's discussions on how to hire vendors from photographers to caterers to dress shops informed and influenced all of our vendor selections. By doing so I hired great vendors right away and avoided many of the hassles that my friends went through while planning their weddings. I'm not sure how much money I saved through their suggestions, but they really do understand what good vendors look like -- which was tremendously helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Tasteful and Creative Ideas.......2007-07-15

This book is excellent for both engaged couples planning their weddings, and those who want to plan weddings as a career. The colors and shapes of each spread give them a strong impact without becoming tacky and flamboyant. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2007-07-05

As a wedding assistant, this book has become almost a bible to me. Ideas inside have been the building blocks of several weddings within the last two months.
GREAT

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-02-11

This book is absolutely amazing. It has so many beautiful pictures and such easy tips to follow for your own wedding.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Simplicity.......2006-01-15

The books offers simple, colorful pictures to indulge yourself in and set up in the most organized fashion. I was surprised at how much information it actually offered once I started reading the book. The text goes beyond the design efforts of the wedding and takes you into the scheduling of the wedding, the tasks that will be developed throughout the preparation of the wedding, wedding day preparations, tips on selecting the the venue & dealing with the people involved and just basic advice on every single detail. I found the book very helpful since it was seperated in different chapters according to the type of venues. The floral ideas were amazing since it offered simplicity using color tactics rather than quantity tactics. I only wished there were more weddings per each theme to compare. Such as three different 'vineyard' weddings, so it would offer more ideas within each particular theme.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Wedding Planning Book.......2007-08-06

This book was a life saver to me as I planned my wedding . It covers everything that you can think of from invitation etiquette, to wedding ceremony set up, to how plan your reception. I found this guide to be indispensable! It offers loads of sound advice, direction, and suggestions--it gets down to the specifics like what the difference is between a Pomander bouquet versus a Nosegay bouquet, or how to set up a Chuppah etc.. The authors give fantastic advice on how to handle all kinds of tough wedding situations and dilemmas. For those that have no clue and not the foggiest idea of where to begin to those that have a good amount of wedding know how-- this book will be an enourmous amount of help!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tool.......2007-03-20

I love this book! I purchased this book back when I first got engaged because I have never even participated in a wedding before and had no idea where to begin. Every time I go somewhere that we'll be talking about wedding stuff (which tends to be everywhere even though I don't always feel like talking about the wedding), I take it with me. Someone will ask me a question, and I'll just look it up. This book is wonderful if you need a place to begin or if you just need a reference book for all the crazy etiquette that weddings entail.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent wedding source.......2006-09-04

This book was the number one resource for us while we were planning our wedding. We had many wedding magazines and books, but this was the by far the best. Eventually the others were pushed aside and we relied on this as our only source. There are many great tips for weddings of all types and sizes. The authors gave great advice and tips while offering humor (which is well-needed during the stressful times such as narrowing down the guest list). I highly recommend this book to couples looking to purchase one source to cover it all! Thanks Laura!

5 out of 5 stars words to the wise .......2006-03-17

It certainly covers a lot of ground, evenly and fairly concisely.I am an older male and I read a lot, but knew absolutely nothing about weddings. My partner suggested I buy the book, wise woman .If you are a man and feel trepidation around this largely female undertaking, read this book, and read it well.It is up to date and as a core virtue is not attached to selling you something you do not want or cannot afford. It only asks that you be satisfied and happy with your informed choice.Besides covering the rather effete items such as dress, and who goes where when, the nitty gritty on prenups, how to handle the caterers and who gets paid when, are also included. Read it again as the wedding details and decisions start to fall into place and you will be of some help to yourself as well as her.Occasionally you will be asked what you think.Occasionally you will have to weigh in to save your sanity. These things do need planning input by guys, and its a life learning experience -for most of us pleasantly, I hope!If you put yourself out of the loop, you really are a dummy. Together you actually can do it, and this is a good exercise.

If you've ever lived in a small town or been active in a church, chances are you know a Miss Julia, the paragon of outdated correctness at the center of Ann B. Ross's series of comic novels. One-third busybody, one-third Southern relic, and one-third loving kindness, the elderly Miss Julia finds herself at a loss at the beginning of Miss Julia Throws a Wedding. Although her own marriage was about as uplifting as a burned pot roast, she is mortified to learn that Hazel Marie, her dead husband's mistress, proposes to move out of Miss Julia's house and into a life of sin with the perpetual bachelor J.D. Pickens. At least Deputy Sheriff Coleman Bates and attorney Binkie Enloe, longtime lovers, have finally decided to do the right thing. Now if only they would do it the right way. Intent on preserving the niceties, Miss Julia takes over the wedding for Coleman and Binkie, vetoing their plans for a quick courthouse union and struggling to pull together a tasteful formal event with one week's notice. To complicate matters, a neighborhood thief and troublemaker, Dixon Hightower, has escaped from police custody. With only her imperious nature and the force of her convictions, can Miss Julia create the wedding of her dreams for Binkie and Coleman? It's a thin but spirited romp, like a village cozy without the unpleasantness of a murder. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Readers love Miss Julia, the proper lady of a certain age with a backbone of iron and perfect Steel Magnolia poise, not to mention the sharpest tongue south of the Mason-Dixon Line. In Miss Julia Throws a Wedding, we find her feeling a little wistful when Hazel Marie, once her late husband's paramour and now her best friend, prepares to move out and live in sin with that marriage-shy Mr. Pickens. Suddenly, to Miss Julia's delight, a wedding is in the offing: Handsome Deputy Coleman Bates and attorney Binkie Enloe announce their plans to run down to the courthouse and tie the knot. But Miss Julia insists they have a real wedding ceremony and vows to make it happen. When a missing preacher, a crowd of uninvited guests, and a queasy bride threaten the happy event, Miss Julia is there to restore order, confirming her undying motto: if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself!

3 out of 5 stars Anti-Catholic.......2007-09-30

This book is better than "Miss Julia's School of Beauty", which I thought was extremely silly. However, I like books about Southern women, so I bought a couple of her other books, including "Throws A Wedding", which I finished today. At least it made more sense than "Miss Julia's School of Beauty". You can check my review on that one. However, I am surprised that none of the reviews I read mentions the anti-Catholic tone to this book. Some of the Hispanic workers in Abbottsville see what they think is an outline of "The Virgin", whom Miss Julia apparently has never heard of, because she is shocked by the word 'virgin' being spoken in front of Little Lloyd. Then, since the image of the Virgin Mary is referred to time and again throughout the second half of the book, it is always referred to in a derogatory manner. The preacher's wife wants to start the prayer chain and rid the town of this 'superstition". Miss Julia can hardly contain herself, she is so full of ire about the belief of the people who believe in that direction. I have never read a so- called light-hearted book of fiction that was so anti-Catholic, or any religion, for that matter. If this is the view of the Presbyterians, they should be ashamed. I am not a Catholic, but I respect their beliefs and the beliefs of other religions. The way the author tears into the Catholic beliefs is beyond belief.

5 out of 5 stars doing a mapquest for directions to Miss Julia's world.......2006-06-19

I read these books because I love the feel of them - the small town with its gossips and good Samaritans, Miss Julia with her sense of propriety and justice. The books are not big on plot, but I don't think that's what they're about. The endings are predictable because they are 'feel good' books. I'd be sorely disappointed if the guy didn't get the girl in the end or if I had to read about the demise of any one of the characters. I'm not looking for reality when I pick up a Miss Julia book. I'm looking for a glimpse into a gentler world than the one I see on televison, at the movies, or in many of the bestselling novels out there. The writing is colorful, humorous, and entertaining. I even find myself inspired to do good deeds after reading about one of Miss Julia's exploits. The only problem I have with these books is that I wish there were more of them. I gobble one up and then have to wait so long before a new one comes out. If you liked Andy of Mayberry, you'll love Miss Julia.

5 out of 5 stars A wedding like no other.......2005-08-10

When Miss Julia's lawyer, Binkie Enloe, and her boyfriend Coleman decide to get married, Miss Julia cannot hide her joy and relief. Although the happy couple would be satisfied with a quick trip to the Justice of the Peace, Miss Julia will have none of that. She decides to have a full-scale flowers, guests, and music affair at her stately home. This, despite the fact that she has only one week to work on it. As with all Miss Julia books, her best intentions of a prim and proper affair go out the window and hilarious complications arise, including a reluctant bride and the miraculous appearing of Mary on the side of the new Presbyterian Life Center which is being built across the street from Miss Julia's home. There are further complications of a thief in town, and a skittish associate pastor, just to spice up the proceedings. As always with this series, this is a delightful read.

4 out of 5 stars This is my favorite Miss Julia so far.......2005-06-24

Be careful what you wish for, should be the watchword to Miss Julia. In order to try to get her attorney Binkie Enloe & Deputy Coleman Bates (who are living without benefit of matrimony) married, Miss Julia agrees to throw a weding for them on a week's notice. Miss Julia, Lillian (her housekeeper and closest advisor) & her friends, go all out to stage a lovely but small wedding ceremony. It seems as if time and circumstances intervene to place one stumbling block after another in their way but the worst happens when Binkie decides to call off the wedding. Ostensibly, Binkie is the defense attorney for an escaped prisoner and Coleman is sworn to apprehend him and send him to jail; this is the premise she explains to Miss Julia for deciding not to marry Coleman. Deep seated philosophical differences that cannot be reconciled have kept them apart.
Miss Julia and Lillian decide that maybe things will change in the course of the next fews days and the couple will reconsider and get married as intended. To that end, they carry on with the plans for the wedding which will be held in Julia's living room. Their thinking is, if there's a wedding we'll be ready and if there's not we'll throw a party.
Julia and Lillian soon discover however that there is an even more urgent reason to get the couple to consent to the bonds of Holy matrimony ASAP. Since everyone knew that the couple had been enjoying the honeymoon before taking the steps to become man and wife, the inevitable has happened and Binkie is 4 months along "in the family way".
Binkie's real reason for not wanting to marry is that she doesn't want to trap Coleman (who is hopelessly in love with Binkie and is eager to get married no matter what the reason).
Everyone involved in the wedding plans now finds themselves in a tizzy of a dliemma and they pray for some miracle (along with their intervention) to occur that will bring Binkie and Coleman to the alter.
Be careful what you pray for..........I hope you'll love this story as much as I did.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great.... if you have a sister........2007-10-10

No book has ever made me cry as much as That Summer. Yeah, I know it's not Sarah Dessen's best. The thing about this book is that I read it right after my sister graduated. Reading Haven's thoughts about how it would be different when her sister wasn't "across the hall" made me bawl. I could relate to Haven bettter than any of Dessen's other characters. I'll probably never read this book again because I never want to lose the feeling that I got the first time I read it, but I do recommend it to anybody who has had to deal with their sister (or sibling) growing up before them.

1 out of 5 stars How did this get published?.......2007-10-09

At the beginning I liked the book because it had some interesting possible plot lines: the supermodel who had a meltdown returning home, the older sister's old ex returning and making life more interesting, the father marrying a shallow weatherwoman, etc. But here are the problems I have with this book:

- As others have said, there ended up not being a plot! What exactly was the purpose of this book?
- As I was reading it I thought, "WOW! Sarah Dessen is actually writing a book where the main guy character isn't the girl's love interest!" I was happy that Sumner would be able to help Haven become a better person, but that didn't really result in much. (as a side point, why is it that Dessen always ends up bringing in a boy to fix things? Whatever happened to strong female characters not having to depend on a boy to improve themselves?)
- What happened to the supermodel who had a breakdown? I didn't see her story go anywhere, so what was the point? It could have been very interesting!
- The way Sumner's story ended was terrible.

4 out of 5 stars Readable, pleasant, but lacking substance - 3 1/2.......2007-08-23

"That Summer" is not a bad book. In short, it's a glimpse of one teenage girl's summer as she struggles with typical teenage issues, taking everything in her life and discovering that it can be made worse. Haven, the main character, deals with her father's remarriage, her mother, and her sister. Not particularly remarkable. Mostly, though, it's that this story lacks a plot.

Oh, don't get me wrong. A thoroughly readable book. It flew by. I enjoyed catching a glimpse of another's life, even if it was simply a series of events as opposed to the typical dramatic plot format. In a sense, that is both a pro and a con for this book. Yes, it lacks a plot, but on the other hand, it makes for a much more realistic book, one that is easier to relate to.

It was mostly pleasant as well. The relationships they all have with each other are very real and there are some touching moments to the book. Nothing heart-stopping, but still okay. Recommended to someone looking for a quick, pleasant read.

3 out of 5 stars Fun Former Boyfriend.......2007-07-03

Haven feels a little bit like her life is escaping from her grasp. She remembers being small and safe, having her parents together and loving each other, having her sister sometimes be nice to her. Now, though, Haven is quickly approaching six feet tall and she feels gigantic. Her parents are divorced and her father, a television sportscaster, has just remarried, to his television station's weather forecaster. Haven's mother has become the type of woman who goes out to a bar once a week with a new female friend. And the worst thing of all is that Haven's sister is getting married and is unbearably obnoxious and selfish.

When Haven thinks back to when things felt better, her mind gets stuck on one summer, when her sister was in high school and dating a boy named Sumner. Sumner was the type of guy who could bring people together and make everything seem fun. He was nice to Haven and made her sister be nice to her, too. When Sumner came into their house, everyone gathered to greet him. They were all happy.

So when Haven meets up with Sumner again, back in town to work odd jobs before going back to college, all of her memories are stirred up. Could he be the key to her life getting back to normal again? If she tells her sister he is back in town, will she get back in touch with him?

I liked the character of Sumner and the way he always seemed to pop up when Haven needed him. I also liked seeing the dynamics of Haven's family. It was interesting to see the ways she viewed her mother and her father now that they weren't together anymore, and the way she viewed her sister and her wedding plans.

The ending of this book was sort of a letdown, though. Sumner ended up being just a bit boring at the end. Also, Haven's sister was simply over the top. I don't think anyone would have allowed her to behave like she did for so long.

5 out of 5 stars That Summer.......2007-05-28

I would recommend That Summer to other readers because it is an interesting book which describes the challenging life of Haven. I enjoyed this book very much becuase I felt as you were reading it you could feel both happy and sad at the same time. Although this book is ficton; it seemed that this story could be so real at the same time. Typically, girls would appreciate this book more because it is based on a young girl's life. That Summer would be an interesting and adventerous book to choose.

3 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2007-08-30

I was expecting A LOT more from this book, especially with the title "anything and everything you could possibly say at the altar - and then some". There were very few examples, even fewer useable ones. Waste of money!!

There is a much better book available called The Wedding Ceremony Planner by Reverend Judith Johnson. It has hundreds of suggestions throughout for the different parts of the ceremony. It was much more helpful!

4 out of 5 stars It is just what it says "Vows".......2007-08-27

I did like this book. It gives step by step how the wedding ceremony is planned out. Greeting, Declaration of Consent,Charge to the convocation, Address, Readings, Vows, Ring Exchange, Pronouncement. However just as the title says it only gives vows. If you are looking for a book that offers more about each part of the wedding this is not for you. If you are looking just for the "Vow Portion" of the ceremony you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Plain Jane, Tear Jerkers and OMGOSH do they really say that???.......2007-05-12

Ok, I have read it ALL now! I mean, really, I understand writing your own vows (my hubby and I did) but come on! Most of the ideas in the book are rock solid and it is arranged in a way to help even the most timid bride and groom find a comfortable fit. The new twist is the ideas for the, umm, shall we say, far left among us who need to express themselves in TRULY unique ways at their wedding ceremony.

Yes, it is great for organizing, planning and laying out a service. It is full of ideas and resources to help make your (hopefully One)Big Special day truly unique. I would recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Okay book but not super helpful.......2007-03-17

This book was not as helpful as I thought it would be. I was looking for nice quotes about love that I could use on my wedding day. This book has a large section of quotes but none of them were all that great. The book gives advice on how to write your own vows but not enough examples. Not a terrible book but not as helpful as it could be.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to writing your own wedding vows........2006-07-20

This book offers a lot despite its size. There is plenty of advice on how to write your own wedding vows. The book gives you a lot to think about that helps you write your own personalised vows. This book contains many poems and thoughts so you can choose the words that express how you feel for your loved one.The book caters for everyone and it does so very sensibly without offending anyone. The book is one of the best books I've read and has so much to offer.I highly recommend it.For the price alone its a good value.Makes an ideal gift.If you dont want to buy several books you should consider this book.
