5 out of 5 stars Strength Approach Fans.......2007-08-23

Not so many "management gurus" believe in "strength approach" like John C Maxwell and even some of his ways are included in the Cliffton's Talents, this book show us the ways how to use our Talents.
If you can change your paradigm from Deficit Approach to Strength Approach, which is more productive, more simple and better communication, I recomend you to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing book for those who have raw talent.......2007-08-06

I have just finished one of the greatest books written for people with talent by John Maxwell. "Talent is never enough." I want to encourage all of you to read this book. This has been one of the best reads of my life. Here is a great quote and then a summary of the 13 areas that add to our talent.

I challenge each of you to do this exercise, it will build the team you are a part of. "For the next two weeks, make a commitment to yourself to take no credit for anything that goes right. Praise your employees, co-workers, colleagues, and family members for their contributions. Note the difference it makes in their performance and your relationship with them. I believe that once you've tired it, you will enjoy giving the credit away so much that it will become a regular part of your life."

1. Belief lifts my talent.
2. Passion energizes my talent.
3. Initiative activates my talent
4. Focus directs my talent.
5. Preparation positions my talent.
6. Practice sharpens my talent.
7. Perseverance sustains my talent.
8. Courage tests my talent.
9. Teachability expands my talent.
10. Character protects my talent.
11. Relationships influence my talent.
12. Responsibility strengthens my talent.
13. Teamwork multiplies my talent.

As a team, my hope is that we can help each other grow to new heights daily. Adopt one of these and work on them daily. For me, courage and Perseverance have been a weakness of mine, however, after reading this book I feel like these two weaknesses will turn into great strengths.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book .......2007-05-21

This book is great especially for those who may feel that they can solely get by on just talent. The book is well written and details what how important it is not to just rely on the talent you have.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a good choice.......2007-05-14

John Maxwell has written dozens of books, and I was told by a friend who follows the author that this might be his best. Strong praise for someone who has written some great books.

I was not disappointed. While I have only read two other books by Mr. Maxwell, this one is fantastic. It was inspiring and motivational and is the type of book that couples advice with actions steps.

I keep a list of all books I read each year. Those that are exceptional get a star next to them. Talent Is Never Enough got two stars.

5 out of 5 stars enlightening.......2007-05-12

Gives an outstanding insight into a topic that most people never truly understand. An incredible point of view mixed with great quotes and interesting stories.

4 out of 5 stars Review: Love is Never Enough.......2007-08-23

I purchased this book for a couple who were in need of some "3rd party" assistance to help them with communicating with each other. My understanding from the husband is that the information contained in the book has proved very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2006-07-14

I felt this book was insightful, consise, and most importantly helpful. The strategies in this book focus on automatic thoughts, your perception of your mate, and how to foster good communication. The tone of the book is very friendly and non confrontational.
If your relationship is in trouble, or you just want to improve your relationships, this is a good book to get.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but some shortcomings............2006-03-28

This is a great book on cognitve therapy as it applies to relationships. It is well-written, rigorous and illustrates important points with useful examples.

This book goes way beyond what you might see in a pop psychology book and the material is presented in a way that it can be applied. It also provides a useful framework for understanding cogntive therapy in general.

What I feel is missing from this approach is honoring basic compatability. While emotions are strongly linked to thought, there is more to making a relationship work than working through communication patterns and automatic thoughts.

A useful complimentary book is "Will Our Love Last" by Sam Hamburg. This book looks at the aspects of relationship having to do with compatability along three dimensions... chemistry, what he calls wavelength and practical everyday living. This approach provides an alternative lens to look at what is going on beyond the cognitive aspects of the couple's situation.

5 out of 5 stars Sustaining a relationship.......2004-07-19

Aaron T. Beck MD, is the father of cognitive therapy and professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. His books on depression and anxiety broke new ground in the field of psychotherapy by demonstrating the power of breaking the link between automatic thoughts and emotional reactions. He married Judge Phyllis Beck in 1950 and the couple is blessed with children and grandchildren.

I have often been frustrated by the destructive habit patterns that emerge in my relationships. LOVE IS NEVER ENOUGH has helped me to understand their origin and more importantly, how to remove them. It has been a valuable tool not only for my personal but also my spiritual relationships.

Dr Beck writes that, _The essence of marital cognitive therapy consists of exploring with troubled partners their unrealistic expectations, self-defeating attitudes, unjustified negative explanations, and illogical conclusions. Through a tune-up of their ways of drawing conclusions about each other and talking to each other, partners have been helped by cognitive therapy to relate to each other in a more reasonable, less hostile way."

And it works! The basic principle of Dr Beck's approach is simple yet substantial. The cornerstone is to strive for a solid foundation of trust, loyalty, respect and security. In short, to become a committed ally, a supporter and champion of my mate. Second, cultivate the tender, loving part of the relationship, and finally, strengthen the partnership by developing a sense of cooperation, consideration and compromise.

These are lofty goals with abstract meanings. I have always known that I wanted these admirable attributes as a part of my relationships, however, it was not until I studied Dr Beck's cognitive therapy that I gained the tools required to implement. By recognizing when distortions automatically enter my thoughts, I am able to resist the naturally tendency of accepting them. Opposing the temptation to react provides me with control over my emotions and prevents me from falling into destructive behaviours and habit patterns. I am able to respond in ways that are consistent with my hopes, dreams and goals for my relationship.

If you are interested in developing stronger more secure relationships in all parts of your life, this book may be interesting to you.

PEACE

5 out of 5 stars It really gives us ground for changes.......2003-10-28

The book is interesting and addresses effectively most communication difficulty between couples.
I would recomment this book to anyone who wants to build a mature and long lasting relationship, as it gives light to important aspects that we many times forget.
Its content gave me more wisdom to understand human relations, and is helping me on my daily life.

Book Description

* Do you feel that no matter how hard you try it is never good enough?

* Do you spend too much time trying to get things exactly right in order to avoid criticism?

* Does it seem that at any minute people will find out that you are not really what you seem to be?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be struggling with perfectionistic tendencies. They can serve a positive purpose in your life. But having extremely high standards for yourself and others can leave you feeling let down -- over and over again -- when these expectations aren't met. As psychologist and researcher Monica Ramirez Basco explains, uncontrolled perfectionism can lead to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, fear of failure, and broken marriages and friendships.

In Never Good Enough Dr. Basco helps you understand why you feel driven to get things "just right" and shows you how to make the best of your perfectionism. Filled with practical advice, encouragement, and strategies for self-discovery, this invaluable guide includes Dr. Basco's own thirty-question self-test that will help you recognize and manage the negative side of your perfectionism. You will learn how to stop the struggle with yourself and others, how to evaluate your worth and performance in life, and how to replace the pursuit of perfection with peace of mind.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not as impressed as other reviewers.......2005-01-10

While it might have a catchy title, I don't think this book is intended for those who already know themselves to be perfectionists. Basco spends most of the text examining scenarios faced by four fictitious perfectionists. I didn't find this to be of any value because I know what perfectionists do and I'm perfectly (ha!) aware of the problems they face every day - I am one and that's why I bought the book in the first place!

Basco's overly-simplistic approach on how to deal with the problems this personality trait creates is clearly from someone who doesn't have a serious problem with the issue herself. It is surprising to me that she has 'treated' as many perfectionists as she claims. It surprises me because she merely scrapes the surface of the problems that perfectionism brings about, and to be quite frank she doesn't show herself to have as good of a handle on this topic as someone writing a book about it should. Did Basco do any real research on this prior to writing the book? Where's the bibliography? While sources are readily available, this book seems to be based on the author's conclusions alone.

If you don't know whether or not you're a perfectionist and you want to find out, then this might be the book for you. And if you're a student of psychology and you want to be able to identify perfectionism when you see it, this book might be of some value. I gave the book three stars because I think it might be somewhat useful under either of those two circumstances. However, if you already know you have a serious problem with perfectionism (as I do) and you're looking for real-world solutions, I think you will probably come away very disappointed with this book. Had I been judging this book for the latter quality alone I would have granted it a single star.

The same day I picked this book up I was fortunate to happen upon a book titled "Overcoming Procrastination" by Neil A. Fiore (ISBN 1-56731-556-9). You may find it under the title "The Now Habit", the name it went by prior to reprinting. Those suffering from serious problems with perfectionism also typically confront issues with procrastination. "Overcoming Procrastination" also deals with perfectionism directly and proposes a workable approach towards getting an upper-hand on it. While the last two or three chapters border on silly, the tools the rest of the book provides makes it very much worth reading. I have used them myself and they have helped me considerably.

In summary, to the true perfectionist I highly recommend passing over "Never Good Enough" and heading straight for "Overcoming Procrastination". Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2001-09-24

I love this book. It helps the reader determine if they are a perfectionist, how this impacts their lives negatively, in what areas perfectionism is a problem, and gives ways to cope with perfectionism. The techniques to manage perfectionism are based on sound psychological theory. The author has a clear writing style and she uses alot of good quality illustrative examples. She makes the more theoretical material come alive and simplifies it without insulting the intelligence of the reader.

Some of the activities can be time consuming, but they are well worth it. In fact, the book will really not be as valuable if the reader is not willing to put the time and effort in to doing at least some of these activities. The book also contains ideas to help people who do not consider themselves perfectionists cope with the people in their lives who are perfectionistic. Well worth reading!!

5 out of 5 stars Making friends with your own perfectionism!.......2001-08-02

There are dozens of books on perfectionism, but I think this one is the best. Research psychologists Hewitt & Flett (1991) have shown that perfectionism is not always liked with neurotism, instead there are three different types: self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed perfectionism. Dr. Basco catches up this latest trend and translates it into the readable language for lay persons, without losing scientific facts. The first chapter offers a wonderful self-diagnosing test. The second chapter compares the advantages and disadvantages of perfectionism. I think this is especially valuable. Traditional books on this topics use very strong words like ¡§Beat your perfectionism,¡¨ or ¡§Fight your perfectionism¡¨¡Ketc. Sometimes it feels even more depressed to learn that the part of yourself is so bad. Dr. Basco uses a more peaceful way to help you make friends with this part of yourself. Perfectionists are no longer blamed for themselves! The remaining chapters are some step-by-step guidelines to change the inner thoughts that lead to maladjusting perfectionism, which are mainly based on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). At the professional level, being a mental health counselor, I wish I could find more about the etiology and origins of perfectionism, and the psychodynamic approach to treat this issue in this book. (Am I too perfectionistic??) But at the personal level, I gain a lot of insight about my own perfectionism and its effect on my work and relationships. That's why I give this book five stars!!

This no-nonsense, compassionate guide explores misguided life strategies that can sabotage happiness and fulfillment. Using practical examples from everyday lives, the authors show us how to replace feelings of chronic dissatisfaction with a sense of contentment and fulfillment.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating, insightful and practical.......2005-12-01

I'm not usually keen on self-help books because I find that they tend to repeat themselves, use extensive anecdotal evidence or offer nothing but psychobabble. This one is different.

The authors really understand human nature. They go beyond the surface and ask us to pose difficult questions to ourselves about why we repeat certain behaviors or what is causing us to be unfulfilled at work and relationships, and in other areas of our life.

The book covers a wide range of territory and is well worth reading, especially if one takes the time to do the exercises and think about what might be causing him or her to be stuck and routinely unable to feel satisfied.

My only complaint would be that there was a little too much emphasis placed on parenting and early childhood experiences. Not everyone is damaged in childhood. Other life events can occur in adulthood that can be traumatic and can alter one's self image and self-esteem.

Other than that, this is a thoroughly enjoyable and insightful read.

Nine core issues are discussed as underlying chronic discontent or "never enough" thinking. The authors are both therapists and present the issues as questions commonly asked by their clients. "Why do I always feel like something is missing?" is shown to be a search for self. "Why don't I follow through on my dreams?" can mask the search for purpose. "Why is it that nothing makes me happy for long?" calls for a search for validation. The search for trust lies behind the question "Why can't I just relax?", and the search for competence lurks beneath "Why am I so bored and restless?" "Why can't I find the right person?" translates to the search for a mirror. "Why do I always end up getting less than I give?" calls for a search for control. The search for identity underlies "Why can't I stop comparing myself to other people"? The last core issue is the search for safety, or "Why do I always want the one thing I can't have?" Guidelines for change and growth are discussed throughout each chapter, and the closing chapters pull together ideas so that satisfaction with one's life is seen as an achievable goal. Lots of thought-provoking ideas as well as Prescriptions for Change, and Thoughts & Questions given for each of the nine core issues.

      Book Description

This is an inspiring memoir of the author's near-fatal battle with anorexia and bulimia, and how she was able to emerge victorious 25 years later. Her incredible, thought-provoking journey takes you far beyond the eating disorder symptoms and into the obsessive mindset in a way that only someone who has been there can. But the story doesn't end there; it continues straight down the road of recovery proving that victory is possible no matter how many years you have struggled.

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars I didn't like this book at all........2005-09-27

This author leaves so many unanswered questions. The cover should have had a picture of Fabio on it, and Barbara Cartland co-author it - the heroine got her man! I have suffered from an eating disorder for almost 20 years, and my therapist recommended it to me. Sure it is comforting to know that there are others who feel the way I do, but just because one suffers from an eating disorder does not automatically mean that one should write a book about it. It certainly didn't give me any insight into my illness, nor did it provide me with any hope.

      4 out of 5 stars i don't get these other reviews..........2005-04-12

I think this was a great book. this is one of the on;y book on eating disorders that i feel relates to me. i thought just like her. and it hurts to see others write such bad reviews. this was a real person telling her real story! this book really moved me. i hope people do read this book and don't listen to people who call this surviver lame.

      1 out of 5 stars Bad one.......2005-02-16

This book was awful. THe author is a bad writer in general. Also, as you can tell from her scary emaciated grin on the back of the book, she is NOT recovered. This means that she cannot distance herself from her disorders and therefore can't really write about them well. There is a tinge of smugness in her account, like, "Look how thin I am, I just CAN'T eat." It's boring and it's about a really lame person...she is incapable of living her life at all. She still lived with her parents for the majority of her life.

1 out of 5 stars Do not read this book!.......2004-04-11

I have read numberous books on eating disorders, from clinical manuals to personal accounts - this book is up there with the worst of them. I forced myself to finish reading it because I couldn't believe how bad it was. Poor grammar, and an author who continually cried "woah is me" was bad enough but for anyone who struggles with an eating disorder this book is very triggering. I understand personal accounts of eating disorders can be triggering, but this was a long, drawn out self-pity waste of time. As a recovering anorexic I felt that this book did not portray the personal struggles of eating disorders accurately at all.
I give the author credit for telling her story, as it is a very difficult thing to do. I hesitated to write a review because I did not want to offend the author, but truthfully her editors should have played a more integral role in her book.

2 out of 5 stars somewhat accurate but terribly written.......2003-12-13

I find myself cringing at her style of writing. She makes it seem like an after school special by confusing hindsight with her actual thoughts at the time. Any firsthand accounts are helpful, but the book often seems contrived and made up. I know her pain all too well, but that doesn't mean that she can write.

      Book Description

Anyone concerned about the level of their personal debt or frustrated by the rat race of aspiring to an affluent lifestyle will appreciate this critique of the effects of over-consumption. This analysis pulls no punches as it describes both the problem and what can be done to stop it. Analyzing the increasing rates of stress, depression, and obesity as possible effects of the consumption binge currently gripping the Western world, this report tracks how Australians overwork, the growing number of things thrown out, self-medicated drugs, and the real meaning of the word choice.

5 out of 5 stars A disturbing indictment of Australian consumerism.......2006-10-14

According to virtually all statistical measures, Australians have become much, much richer in the past few decades than their parents or grandparents could have dreamed of. Who at the turn of the century, would have imagined us living in a world where we had a car each, had a large house, and hundreds of individual possessions?

Yet it seems in recent decades this trend for consumer capitalism has gotten totally out of control. It now often seems even having a house, car and job isn't enough; we have to have massive plasma television sets, several home computers, a third generation mobile phone, a whizz bang computer and games for the kids, both parents working to the hilt to pay the mortgage, expensive holidays and a million dollars in super at the end of it. We have to send our children to the most expensive private schools and universities, and money and getting things is the most important thing.

This is the picture Hamilton paints of Australia, where people binge on credit, where Australians work themselves almost to death to supply an endless array of goods and services which they don't really need, and are wasted; where about 20% of the population suffer from mental health problems related to low self esteem and stress, and where people avoid having children because each costs $250,000 to raise, and where our rampant consumption is ruining our environment as well as our health.

I certainly agree many of the ideas put forward in this book are true. Australia does seem to have become a place where the ethic of 'mateship' and community has been replaced with the rather heartless ethics of global capitalism, which are aimed at endless economic growth and growing individual prosperity. Reforms to make the Australian economy more open to foreign competition were opened in the 1980's by the Labour government, and ever since then in Australia the emphasis is more and more on aligning ourselves to the globalised world.

I do feel though that material progress is a good thing. However, our material progress is having some negative consequences, such as rocketing house prices and crippling resource shortages, in water and other areas. Our reckless focus on 'growth only' is also doing great damage to our environment, globally and locally.

Money is important and Australia must not go the way of Sub-Saharan Africa, being poor, overpopulated and racked by pollution and war. However I agree the time is coming when Australians will need to see there is more to life than simply the material; no amount of money or personal possessions is going to stop us from dying and suffering ill health, though wealth can delay both. We also need to be more charitable to the poor, as Australia still has some 100,000 homeless people, and we need to recognise the spiritual is an integral part of life, regardless of how much or how little we have (I am sure there is a correlation between the breakdown of religion and community in Australia and depression and other forms of mental illness).

To cure ourselves of affluenza we need to focus less on affluence and more on quality of life, which unfortunately affluence can't bring entirely on its own, without good ethical, social, spiritual and community values and wholeness and environmental sustainability. There seems little point in having a beautiful house or a brand new 4WD when the skies of your city are constantly polluted, water is running out, and garbage is piling up everywhere in the streets and elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting, at a macro level.......2006-07-09

This book was facinating and easy to read- a rare combination of meticulous research and good writing. The author systematically explains the different aspects of society where affluenza is changing our way of life- it's scary stuff. But I was left thinking, what do I do about it? The author's few page 'manifesto' at the end of the book is too little, too late for me. I would have liked to see some practical tips in each chapter about what ordinary people can do to combat affluenza.

4 out of 5 stars Hopefully the start of a trend - the reduction in consumption.......2006-06-11

A chilling tale of modern consumption gone mad, of the availability of so much yet causing so little happiness. It seems the more we consume the less happy we are. Our houses are bigger than ever, but our families are smalle. OUr children go to the best schools but we hardly see them. We have more money than ever before yet we are crippled under staggeringly high debt, more than ever before - the authors ask the question - what is going on?

They support this ably with graphed research however unfortunately the graphs were not well referenced so I have no idea as to their veracity, so when they mention a 23% proportion of 20-50 year olds 'downsizing' their lifestyle in the last 10 years I just don't know where they got this figure from, or indeed how valid. However while this was a distraction, I did find this book had some extremely major strengths
1 - it is well written,
2 - it is more than just scare tactics, It is thoughtful and thought provoking about the way we live
3 - it offers actually practical solutions as well as philosophical idealism. The conclusion is a series of ideals and how we can go about meeting them.

There have been others talking about the unhappiness bought about by mass consumerism, this is a nice book to start at to understand the issues.

        Book Description

Between the 1930s and the 1960s, Raymond Loewy's streamlined designs for thousands of consumer goods -- everything from toasters and refrigerators to automobiles and ocean liners -- radically changed the look of American life. Regarded as the father of modern industrial design, he appeared on the cover of Time in 1949; in 1990, he was selected as one of Life's "100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century." Whether they realized it or not, Americans at mid-century lived in a Loewy-designed world, from the cigarettes they smoked (Lucky Strike's packaging), the soda they drank (the restaurant Coca-Cola dispenser), the toothpaste they used (Pepsodent's toothpaste tube), the cars they drove (his organization was Studebaker's design and styling department), the buses (Greyhound) and trains (the Pennsylvania Railroad) in which they rode, and the department stores (Gimbel's, Foley's, and Lord & Taylor) and grocery stores (Lucky) where they shopped.

Never Leave Well Enough Alone was first published in 1951 at the height of Loewy's career. His company, Raymond Loewy Associates, served as design consultants to more than a hundred of the world's largest corporations, and products manufactured to their specifications sold in excess of $3 billion annually. Written and designed by Loewy, this profusely illustrated book is part autobiography and part design manifesto. Acclaimed for its wit, its idiosyncracies, and its insight into the Loewy aesthetic, this volume stands as a remarkable document of the American Century and a still-vital meditation upon the importance of industrial design in daily life.

        Product Description

The Cure emerged in the post-punk 70s and defied all expectations to launch a marathon career marked by hit records and a string of sell-out arena shows. Never Enough traces The Cure s roots in middle-class Crawley, Sussex, and tracks their gradual rise, revealing how their first major album Pornography, almost ended the band well before their multi-platinum career began. Also documents Robert Smith s escape into the Siouxie & The Banshees camp during the 80s, and his experimentation with every drug. His reluctance to return to The Cure would eventually lead to them becoming superstars all across the globe. Never Enough is the first major, definitive biography of these post-punk survivors. In 2004, after numerous personnel changes, the band delivered their Greastest Hits album.

5 out of 5 stars For now, the QUINTESSENTIAL biography of the greatest band ever!! The Cure!!.......2006-10-16

A Great!! GREAT! Book. Starting from when Lol Tolhurst, Mike Dempsey, Simon Gallup, and Robert Smith joined and from other band join ins and outs. Talks an awful lot of Robert Smiths life as a child with his childhood friend and former bandmate Lol Tolhurst. Incredible book!! There is alot more tho that I would have wanted to see. THe author cut off at some songs when introducing an album to speed up the book. Alot of songs were left unspoken of which kinda ticked me off but other than that I LOVED it!!

For Cure fans alike this book is a MUST read!!! It's great! Don't hesitate, buy it!! You will love it!!

        4 out of 5 stars a band-ography for Cure fans.......2006-09-22

It's nice to have a Cure biography and there is a heck of a lot of history to go through. In a way it's nice to have the book to make sense of all the different line-ups, who did what when, and how and why everyone came to be in the band.

Also the story in the beginning about Robert's brother taking him to the Isle of Wight festival is priceless. I won't say anymore here so that you'll go get the book!

It probably could be better but there's still enough good info in there for Cure fans that they won't be dissapointed. Another important thing to mention is that he interviewed Lol Tolhurst, and some other former members, so you get more than one perspective on the old days, which is cool.
