A Special Book.......2007-10-10
This is one the writers earlier books and is the best work of his that I have read. It is a superb novel of intrigue and espionage that takes place during the Cold War. The plot is tight and is exyremely well crafted and one that makes the reader keep the book at hand. It is really that good. One is able to see that quite a bit of research went into this novel. The characters are very well developed and have true depth that the writer has breathed into them. After carefully intoducing the reader to his charcters as well as the mood in the Country of Russia, this book takes off rapidly and is a real page turner. The only problem that was found to exist was in the love aspect that the writer seems to infuse in all of his works. The story is strong enough to stand on its own without this unnecessary diversion. Perhaps adding to my chagrin is the weaknesss in the development of the character of Lisa Rhodes who sometimes appears lifeless and merely a filler. This character is really not needed and adds little to this superb book.
A Well Thought Out Must-Read.......2007-10-02
Set during the Cold War era, this novel was heavily researched, well thought out & well written. It's a gripping tale of espionage which takes place in The Soviet Union. The charm school deals with downed American pilots from the Vietnam war forced to train Russians to become "Americans" infiltrating US society. It's long, but never tiring. A very good twist is given toward the end. It makes one think about our own government selling us out for the good of detente. Excellent reading
The Charm School is excellent that's all you need to know!.......2007-08-02
I've read many of DeMille's books. As you flip the pages it gets more exciting and fast-paced then you cannot put the book down. This is one of the first books I read by DeMille,s. This is a very good story.
I've enjoyed reading Gold Coast,Plum Island,Word of Honor are also excellent books that I would highly recommend. In fact, Demille is a really a great author as he develops the character's so you feel their emotions like you are at the scene. I would read the whole collection they are all excellent books.
Demille at his finest!.......2007-06-25
I've read all of Demille's work, and Charm school has my vote for #1. (Previously it was Up Country.) I've never been to Russia, so I don't have personal knowledge of any of this, but he makes it seem so real. I was reminded of Peter Graves' character in the movie Stalag 17. I've talked with friends who were pilots in Viet Nam (as was I), and we agree that the circumstances in this novel could be real. That's a sobering thought.
Great Plot...Annoying Characters.......2007-06-20
Nelson DeMille can write a page turner like nobody else. His plots are always interesting and fast-paced. His characters are generally interesting, funny, and real. But not this time.
The male and female leads of this story, Colonel Hollis and Lisa Rhodes, are among the most unsympathetic protagonists I've ever read. Lisa is a Russophile (which is not in and of itself annoying) who throws herself at the unhappily married Col. Hollis, who is not much on witty banter. I won't tell you whether or not they live or die, but I have to tell you that by page 200 or so, I was hoping they'd be unmercifully killed and the story would shift to the more interesting KGB Colonel Burov and the CIA spook Seth Alevy.
The story though, was interesting, tense, and well-written. DeMille can write tension and action extremely well. The concept of a "Charm School" where downed Vietnam pilots are training Russians to become American and infiltrate our society was a believeable and scary thought for the Cold War Era in which it is set.
So, overall, it's a mixed bag. Worth a read, but I liked the Corey novels better.

Setting: Boston and Rio de Janeiro, 1851
Sensuality: 7
Isadora Peabody is the brilliant but socially inept sibling in an otherwise perfect family. And although she struggles to fit into Boston society, her awkwardness dooms her to repeated failure. Fate intervenes when she learns that a sea captain, Ryan Calhoun, is in need of an interpreter for his next voyage to Rio. And despite Ryan's adamant opposition to hiring a female interpreter, Isadora gains a berth on his ship, thanks to a little blackmail.
Life aboard ship and away from the strict confines of Boston society finds Isadora losing weight, gaining confidence, and blooming like a rose. She befriends the motley crew of rough sailors, and in turn, they become a charm school of sorts, tutoring her in gracefulness--which comes in handy when climbing the rope rigging--dancing, and friendship. Isadora's transformation fascinates Ryan, but he is determined to stay away from her for he has secretive, dangerous plans. Unaware of Ryan's interest, Isadora struggles with her growing attraction to the reckless sea captain. But before they can resolve their feelings, prior commitments surface and endanger their chance of finding a happy future together.
The Charm School is a tale of the evolution of two complicated people and the powerful love that binds them. Wiggs skillfully peels away the layers that conceal the real Isadora until the transformation from misfit to confident woman is complete, while Ryan develops from a wild, rebellious southerner into a man who can overcome impossible odds to reach his goals. If you like swashbuckling adventure, fascinating characters, vivid settings, and surprising plot twists, this wonderful novel will be just your cup of tea.--Lois Faye Dyer
Customer Reviews:
An enjoyable read with plenty of interesting details.......2006-12-09
"The Charm School" is the first book that I have read by Susan Wiggs and I enjoyed it so much that I will look out for some of her others.
Isadora Peabody is the ugly duckling of the Peabody family and she's so used to being overlooked and misunderstood (she's very intelligent and well-read) that she had turned in on herself and become a dull person. Her family don't understand her and the only person in whom she has any interest is Chad, a friend of her brothers', but Chad doesn't seem to notice her.
Then Isadora has a chance to escape - to take a sea voyage as translator on the Silver Swan, a trading ship. Unfortunately her first introduction to the captain Ryan Calhoun wasn't optimal but she manages to persuade the ship's owner to let her come aboard, against Captain Calhoun's wishes.
When they set sail the book really takes off - the description of sailing in the mid-nineteenth century are excellent. I'm a bit of a sailor myself and I found it fascinating to read about how all the crew worked together on the boat and the different tasks they had. There's a very strong theme throughout the book about the slave trade in America and the way that so many people were slave owners without ever really thinking about it. There is some wonderful description when the ship docks in Rio and the way that Isadora slowly unfurls from the ugly duckling into the swan is beautifully written. The ending is satisfying and overall it was a very enjoyable book and I recommend it very highly.
Oversexed hero spoiled what could have been an enjoyable read.......2006-04-12
I've enjoyed some books by Wiggs in the past (THE MISTRESS, THE FIREBRAND), and have not enjoyed some others (THE HORSEMASTER'S DAUGHTER, KINGDOM OF GOLD). So I'm never really sure what I'm going to get when I pick up a Wiggs novel. She is a talented writer, no question, but some of the stories she chooses to spend that talent on leave a lot to be desired.
As usual, this book was written with an easy-to-read engaging flowing style. I've never once had a complaint about Wiggs' writing style. The heroine was what earned this book a two-star rating, rather than a one-star. I could really identify with her. Though I wasn't shy or timid like her (quite the opposite, in fact :), I too went through an ugly-duckling stage (I've destroyed all pictures of me when I was in the ninth grade, just to give you an idea). I was looking forward to watching an awkward girl blossom into a confident woman.
My problem with this book was with the hero. He had some admirable qualities, such as the fact that he was against slavery and didn't look down on Isadora. But he was completely ruled by his sex drive. It was really annoying. When the reader first meets Ryan, he's three-sheets-to-the-wind, falling down drunk pawing at a prostitute (whose name he doesn't even know) that is sitting on his lap. Ugh. I don't find the idea of men paying for sex attractive, even in a historical novel. (And don't you dare say that men have needs or I will scream! Contrary to what mass media would have you believe, a man can live without sex.)
I tried to get past this, but then the heroine later barges in on Ryan in the middle of having sex with a prostitute. It was just so disgusting, and completely unnecessary for the story. It grossed me out, and I found myself thinking that Ryan didn't deserve a sweet, innocent, intelligent woman like Isadora. She'd probably end up catching syphilis from him.
I quit reading at this point, and after checking out this book on the Amazon page, and finding out that Ryan gets Isadora high on hemp during a love scene (how sickening!) just makes me glad that I didn't waste any more time on this book. I'm about ready to give up on Wiggs. Writing talent without morality makes for a poor read.
The Metamorphosis is Lost . . . Very Low 4 Stars........2005-09-26
October 1851 - Boston. The Peabody's of Boston are a proper Bostonian family. Isadora is their oddball. She is dark, pasty, and plump. Her siblings are stylishly fair, fashionably pale, and wonderfully slender. Repugnance fills Isadora's soul. Her family shuns her, she has no friends, and the man she loves ignores her. She will never be part of the 'Charmed Bostonian World'. They will never invite her to the dazzling mythical circle of acceptance - a fairytale place filled with light and beauty and laughter. So why shouldn't Isadora Peabody seize the chance to journey, to journey into a wonderful new world?
Ryan Calhoun is a reckless southern gentleman. He is a charmer. In Boston Harbor, Captain Ryan Calhoun is the latest hot-shot skipper. He is famous for his outlandish clothes, his rakish behavior, and for bringing in lucrative cargos. As accomplished as he is, Ryan Calhoun has only one goal - to reunite his partner with his wife and children. A wife and children bound with the chains of slavery. This time Ryan Calhoun's destination is Rio de Janeiro and he desperately needs a translator. Isadora Peabody fits the bill . . .
However, Isadora Peabody confuses Ryan Calhoun. She makes him uncomfortable. Usually, he is drawn to beautiful women, women who can't see him for what he is - a spoiled, aimless young man. Isadora Peabody sees beneath his carefully constructed facade. Undeniably, he means to intimidate her, to humiliate her, to make her sorry she forced her way onto his ship. Yet, his plans misfire. Ryan finds that sharing Isadora's friendship, trust, and respect is far more satisfying.
Although THE CHARM SCHOOL has a humorous feel, the story lacks something much more important - emotion! To fulfill the metamorphosis idea the reader must feel the heroine's pain and suffering - both emotions seem lacking. Isadora's transformation from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan is never truly felt - so in the end, Susan Wiggs' overall significance was lost.

How can I get those few hours spent reading this book back?.......2005-04-19
This is the only book so far that I've reviewed, that I did not
finish.
I could not get into this book. Maybe it is because my reading interests are more simplistic, but the 2nd story with his first
mate threatened to overwhelm the book.
Also, I did not see where the people on board the ship did all that much to change her, it seemed to me like she did a lot of the changing herself, and much of that came from her new environment, onboard a seagoing vessel.
I read approx. 1/2 of the book, give or take a few pages. I did
want to find out the reaction of the snotty boy back home, when she comes back to London society, but not bad enough to spend a few more hours reading the rest of the book to find out.
After having read the back of the book "Lady Pirate" by Lynsay Sands, it sounds more like a book I would enjoy. I have read 3 of her books and all 3 were very good to excellent. The plot
described on the back of her book sounds very much like the plot on the back of this one, but since I didn't like this one, Lynsay's book will most likely deliver.
Such a sad story..........2005-03-02
I hate to be the only nay-sayer in the crowd, but I simply did not enjoy "The Charm School". It was very well written, and the plotting and idea were excellent, but I found the story to be such a sad one that I simply could not read past the first few chapters. (I skimmed the rest, so I know the story).
Isadora was not only an ugly duckling, she was so badly treated by everyone around her, and she was in such a tremendous amount of emotional pain, it took all my self control to keep from wringing their necks. Everyone was so nasty to her, there was not one person who was nice to her?
I have to admit that I did identify somewhat with Isadora, but I was simply horrified by the way she was treated. The intensity of the cruelty of the people around her seemed horrific beyond words - I have to thank G-d that I was not treated this way. I have to admit that like Isadora I wasn't Miss Social Debutante - but most people were not outright nasty to me, the way people are here in this story. I was simply horrified.
Especially since very early on in the story, I was able to figure out why Isadora acted the way she did. There is something called "sensory integration disfunction", if you will type this into any search engine you can get a lot of information about this condition. This is a minor nervous system disorder - similar to ADD, yet very easily diagnosable, and also easily treated (no drugs, just certain kinds of exercise). "Sensory integration" is how the nervous system, and the brain, process all the millions of sensory stimuli that are constantly around us and are able to synthesize it into a cohesive whole. Some people have excellent sensory integration, and these are the people who seem very much at ease with themselves and with their bodies, their sensory input is processed quickly and efficiently, and they will come across as "poised" and "with it" because their nervous system does a better job at processing and interperting everything around them. At the other end of the spectrum are people whose nervous systems do a poor job processing all kinds of stimulation properly - and these deficiencies can come across in many different ways. One of the faces of SID is the way Isadora is presented - awkward, clumsy, tongue tied, and ill at ease in the physical world around her.
The most serious end of the SID spectrum is autism. An autistic child or person usually has very bad sensory integration, and this is why they sometimes hear things either lower or higher than they actually are, they will feel things either not at all, or they are extremely sensitive. (Perhaps that's also why they do sometimes bizarre - to us - activities, such as rocking, because they are trying to stimulate a nervous system (vestibular stimulation) which is under-stimulated because they can't process normal stimulation properly). But most people with poor sensory integration are not autistic, and their deficiencies are usually not as dramatic or serious as the autistic person's deficiencies.
Normal people who have SID may have difficulty processing auditory stimuli - for instance they will hear a little too loud, or too low, or they will be unable to tune out background noises as well as the average person, which makes it harder for them to concentrate in class, let's say, if there's a humming from the electricity, for instance. Or they will be more sensitive to certain clothing - or less sensitive so that they don't feel pain the way they should, and will do dangerous things - like scald themselves - because they don't realize how hot the water is.
Some children with SI crave stimulation - because since they are not processing the ordinary stimulation around them in a meaningful way, they crave an "extra" dose just to feel normal. Other children with SI will be too sensitive - and will feel that even the slightest touch "hurts" them. One thing they all have in common is that they are "out of sync" with the world around them - which is why SID is sometimes called being "out of sync".
I could go on and on, there are many, many more ways for this to come across in real life, but the way this translated to this story is that Isadora is almost a classic poster child for SID. One of the most common symptoms is difficulty with gross motor planning - dyspraxia. She is awkward because she can't maneuver herself properly, because her brain is not processing the nervous system stimulation efficiently, and therefore she feels awkward both physically and socially. When she goes into a crowded ballroom, SID will especially get worse - because of the increased nervous system input. It is almost cruel to put someone with SID into a crowded ballroom filled with music, talk, people, and lights, and expect her to react normally.
Most people do outgrow it by the time they reach adulthood - or learn to live with it, or compensate - but it seems that Isadora was so badly treated that she did not get a chance to do that. Because of the way she was constantly put down it became impossible for her to develop on her own a way to deal with her deficiencies. She simply lacked the confidence and courage to deal with her problems, people who are constantly put down simply cannot grow up, and this is what has happened to Isadora.
I have worked with children, and have seen this scenario often. Just after I read this story I met Isadora personified in a little three year old. He looked so sad, so much pain in such a young face. This was because he was very clumsy, constantly tripping, breaking things, etc. and was always getting punished. I was so glad to be able to help him, but this is why I couldn't read this story. It was simply too painful to me. I couldn't help her in any way, I couldn't give her confidence over the pages, and reading about all that pain without being able to help was simply too much for me.
The author happens to treat Isadora in a way that is consistent with the way we treat SID today - different kinds of exercise - in therapy lingo called sensory, tactile, proprioceptive, and vestibular stimulation. Working on a ship would provide all the right kinds of stimulation - plus I guess the food rationing and exercise would help her figure, and the fact that she was away from her cruel family and friends did a lot too.
All in all, this was not a book that I was glad I read.
If you want a really realistic, but funny Ugly Duckling story, I would suggest you try "Bet Me" by Jennifer Crusie.
Customer Reviews:
Great series of books grouped together.......2007-06-06
My favorite author puts together a great trio of books. My all time favorite Charm School brings you back to the cold war days wondering how this hasn't been made into a movie. Plum Island is more current, but one of the more exciting and thrilling efforts of DeMille. Lastly Word of Honor is in the middle (chronologically) and is one of his "sleeper" titles that you will truly enjoy.
This is a great value at this price.

Customer Reviews:
You'll read it again and again...........2002-11-12
This compilation is a magical mix, indeed. There are threads of the classic/comedic love triangle, well-developed characters, a plot that makes you turn the pages too fast, and best of all... GREAT artwork.
This, all in a comic... the fact that the love triangle is between three female characters is somehow "second-hand" in importance in many ways. Watasin gives us people first; I never sensed an agenda in the book, though there is no indication that one was being avoided. She simply deals with the facts, and nuthin' but the facts, ma'am. These are three gals in love, in jealousy, in full hormonal tilt-- period.
So, open this one up, sit back, and be prepared to be charmed, to be seduced, and to be delighted. But I warn you... you will be a bit, uh... frustrated-- somewhat thwarted, and completely bedeviled-- because we have to find out what is going to happen in the next installment!
Is the dragon/faerie Fairer Than really in love, or is it a game to her? Will Dean have what it takes to keep Bunny's love? And will Bunny choose to honor her sweet love for the vamp or her dark and wild love for her sultry suitor from the wrong side of the forest?
We will simply wait as patiently as possible. Won't we?
prefect illustration and writing!.......2002-10-10
Charm School, the story of cutie witch Bunny and her conflicted desires for a foxy butch vampire and a saucy femme faerie, manages to be both adorable and sexy at the same time.
Where else can we see a Disney animation alumna doing this kind of content? Or find a graphic novel that combines a great plot, wonderful character development, and gorgeous illustration?
Elizabeth Watasin has managed to create a visual style that is entirely her own and pair it with a story that evokes the trials of first love prefectly.
If that doesn't interest you, at least pick up Charm School for Dean, the biggest hottie in comics since Jaime Hernandez's Hopey.
Absolutely Charming.......2002-09-13
This is the story of Bunny, the sexy highschool witch, her girl friend the somewhat androgynous vampire, Dean and sultry dragon/fairie temptress, FairerThan plus a large cast of supporting characters.
It is a story of first love, hormones, jealousy, seduction, uncertainty and passion told in a wonderfully charming, witty, humerous style. The art is clean, strong. Ms Watasin draws beautiful women beautifully and is a master at capturing emotions.
I highly recommend this book.

This book added a great deal to me becoming the sissymaid that i was meant to be. This training book taught me the feminine mannerisms needed to please a Mistress. Mistress Lorelei gets to the finer points on makeup, manners, serving (such as at a tea party). Her tips on Feminizing the sissy, the sissy keeping a log, practicing daily, and rewarding the sissy for good hard work during his training all show Her true dedication to this wonderful world of sissymaids through Female Guidance & Domination.
Thank You Mistress Lorelei,

Best book of its kind.......2003-02-12
Best book of its kind on the genre- highly recommended for novices and experts.
Good general introduction but disappointing otherwise.......2002-02-21
If you don't know what a sissy maid is, do a search on the web and you'll find hundreds if not thousands of pages. Most of these are porn but the quantity reflects a relatively common interest for some men (and some women too). This book attempts to create a sissy maid in 30 days and frankly this is the greatest disappointment of the book because I don't think it can succeed in such a task in such a short among of time -- it would be better to adapt the daily assignment into weekly ones, in my opinion, to get better and more positive results. Likewise it really needs references to stores and other printed materials that the common reader can access. But it is a good general introduction to the philosophy and feelings of many men and women who do sissy maid training and service. It helped me understand that a world a little better.
Thank You Mistress Lorelei.......2001-05-07
This is a wonderful book for anybody that wants to become a sissy maid. It would be useful for sissies that are just getting started as a maid, or to help experienced maids serve their Mistress better. Mistress Lorelei covers so many aspects of being a sissy maid, including buying your panties, how to curtsey, and more! This sissy wishes she found Her book earlier! Thank You so much Mistress Lorelei! This sissy hopes she can make You and my Mistress proud!
Great Book.......2001-04-23
Best book on the subject. Highly recommeded. Big help for me getting started in California.

A fun mystery.......2001-08-02
Elizabeth doesn't want to join some silly charm school thats come to town, even though evry other girl in town is in it(including Jessica).....But she does. You see,Lizzie just KNOWS that there is something crooked about the "owners" of this "charm-school" and she'll make a fool of herself while she finds what it is.
It's a mystery!!.......2000-12-16
It's a mystery for the Sweet Valley girls! The new charm school has come to town, and all the girls are flocking to learn grace and elegance to impress their boyfriends. But Elizabeth, Amy and Maria know that something is up, and the owners aren't quite who they say they are. The three girls take it upon themselves to solve this mystery, and uncover a scam. It's very exciting and a fun read, as always.
When the going gets tough..........1998-12-29
A wonderful book that once you get started you never want to put it down
Extremely awesome!!.......1998-09-28
This may be the best Sweet Valley Twins book ever written! What I liked the best about it was how the author threw you off when Elizabeth made an embarrassing accusation. It was really funny how Amy, Elizabeth and Maria had to act clumsy for their parents to enroll them in Charm School so they could solve the mystery. It was so hilarious what they did just to get in, even when they didn't want to! For more details, read the book. You won't regret it. This -if not the best book- is the best mystery that Francine Pascal has ever written.

Faerie Charms...Great book, but.................2006-12-31
Faerie Charms is an enchanting good starter book for youngsters and is a good, fun and quick read for the young at heart. I like how Ted Andrews introduces the faeries and nature spirits (and the unicorns & dragons). The only problem I had with reading the book was that the book wasn't edited very well. The book had a good bit of grammar issues and constant repeating. Which I guess the repeating is good for the younger readers, but the grammar could have been better. I found myself backing up several times just to reread a scentence. However, overall it is a great book. If the book is ever revised, I hope that the editing is better.
