When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, send for a boy orphan to help them out at the farm, they are in no way prepared for the error that will change their lives. The mistake takes the shape of Anne Shirley, a redheaded 11-year-old girl who can talk anyone under the table. Fortunately, her sunny nature and quirky imagination quickly win over her reluctant foster parents. Anne's feisty spirit soon draws many friends--and much trouble--her way. Not a day goes by without some melodramatic new episode in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on, Anne declares her eternal antipathy for Gilbert Blythe, a classmate who commits the ultimate sin of mocking her hair color. Later, she accidentally dyes that same cursed hair green. Another time, in her haste to impress a new neighbor, she bakes a cake with liniment instead of vanilla. Lucy Maud Montgomery's series of books about Anne have remained classics since the early 20th century. Her portrayal of this feminine yet independent spirit has given generations of girls a strong female role model, while offering a taste of another, milder time in history. This lovely boxed gift collection comprises Anne of Green Gables, Anne of the Island, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Anne of Green Gables Boxed Set.......2007-09-02

I was very pleased my books came very quickly. They were new so they were in perfect condition. The whole set of books were very reasonably priced, and I'm enjoying reading them.

5 out of 5 stars Just love Anne Shirley!!.......2007-07-17

This series is the most wonderful and entertaining of books!
I got the first book from the library and fell in love with it, and so bought the series from Amazon. These are my favorite books, and I am on my second time through them.

The series starts off about Anne, an orphan girl, who gets sent from the Asylum and goes to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of Green Gables.
Her life is filled with hilarious predicaments! Dyeing her hair, falling off the Barry roof, daydreaming and imagining to much, and plus, her rivaly with handsome Gilbert Blythe.

I highly recommend this series! I loved the rest of the books as much as I loved the first! Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote a masterpice! You will definitely fall in love with imaginative Anne Shirley!

5 out of 5 stars Just like I remembered.......2007-07-17

This series is really great. I started from the first book and couldn't put them down. The story is just as intruiging and wonderful as when I read it the first time when I was younger. VERY VERY VERY enjoyable!

When my Grandfather was a boy he speant time on PEI on a farm located very near where Green Gables would have been. He bought this set for me long before i was able to read and they sat on my shelf until my high school years when i finaly picked them up. I had watched the movies with my Grandfather as far back as i could remeber and assumed the books would be worth reading. They quickly surpassed all other books and became my favorite.
Now, having just graduated college and looking for a litte direction and inspiration (like Anne I'm looking for work as a teacher) I picked them back up and have been rereading them. I feel like these books such life lessons that anyone with any beliefs can read them and learn good values.
These books and movies have always been like a comfert food for me these are the books and movies i read and watch when things are going bad.
I highly reccamend these books to people of al ages, they are well worth the time, and are a nice and easy read.

Book Description

Over twenty years after its first publication in 1978, Requiem for a Dream makes it to the big screen in a major motion picture starring Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans, Jared Leto, and Christopher McDonald. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the highly acclaimed director of Pi, the movie was released in November 2000. In this searing novel, two young hoods, Harry and Tyrone, and a girlfriend fantasize about scoring a pound of uncut heroin and getting rich. But their habit gets the better of them, consumes them and destroys their dreams. "Selby's place is in the front rank of American novelists. His work has the power, the intimacy with suffering and morality, the honesty and moral urgency of Dostoevsky's....To understand Selby's work is to understand the anguish of America." -- The New York Times Book Review

5 out of 5 stars Prepare yourself before you read.......2007-01-30

You need to be ready before you read this book. Upon finishing this little dandy I was physically shaking. I can't think of any other book that has made of shake. The manic style and never ending punch in the face flow of this Hubert Selby Jr. masterpiece will stay with you for the rest of your life. If you saw the movie and so decided to not read the book, you are making a mistake. The book is a totally different experience then the movie. Each is a masterpiece in a completely unique way. It's amazing how real this book is. You will feel insane compassion for the lowest of individuals. You will want to reach out to these amazing characters. I don't know how Hubert Selby Jr. does it. His mind must have been a dark but beautiful and loving realm. If you want to be a book this one will make you its own. Read it.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-09-30

by far the best book i have ever read about the troubles about addiction. and the movie was also the best movie i have ever seen. i recommend to do both. this story is so moving, and it introduces drugs, and addiction in a way i have never witnessed. the book is so descriptive, your reading about addiction, and at the same moment your so addicted to the book you cannot put it down for even a split second. the movie is a masterpiece, it is so emotional, you feel the pain, all the emotions the characters go through, you feel like you are there when you watch the movie. its amazing, Requiem for a dream takes four main characters, with the same excruciating addiction to drugs and creates a vivid illustration of what they deal with, words cannot describe how beautiful this story of reality is. and lastly after you watch this movie, you will be madly in love with jared leto.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie.......2006-09-15

I happened to see the movie before I read the book, and I know that there are people who frown upon that. I've seen the movie a ton of times and it's a stunning piece of work, which made me finally decide the time was right to read the book. All I can say is the book is very intense. Had I not seen the movie first though, i'm not so sure i'd have been able to follow the book. Selby is a genius authour, but if you have not seen the movie or read his books, you might get a little lost. There are no quotation marks when people are speaking and that can get a little confusing.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-07-21

I'm currently on page 233. I'm going to finish this book tonight and edit my review, but I had to type this. I never thought I'd read or see anything that matched the movie, but this has matched it, and may surprass it when I'm done reading it. It offers a lot more insight into the downfall and the reasons for it that the movie does. Excellent piece of writing.
Though, Selby could have used some quotation marks, but after a while, you start recognizing who says what.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2006-01-27

Though i wouldn't recommend this book to everyone, i mark it as
one of my favorites. I have read most of Selby's work and I am
once again amazed by his talent to keep his readers. If you liked
Requiem for a Dream I would also recommend his other work.

    Book Description

Parrotheads, Hemingway aficionados, and sun worshipers view Key West as a tropical paradise, and scores of writers have set tales of mystery and romance on the island. The city's real story--told by Maureen Ogle in this lively and engaging illustrated account--is as fabulous as fiction. In the early 1800s, the city's pioneer founders battled Indians, pirates, and deadly disease and created wealth beyond their imaginations. In the two centuries since, Key West has nurtured tragedy and triumph and has stood at the crossroads of American history.

When Florida joined the Confederacy in 1861, Union troops seized control of strategically located Key West and city residents spent four years living under martial law. In the early 1890s, Key West Cubans helped Jose Marti launch the revolution that eventually ended Spain's control of their homeland. A few years later, the battleship Maine steamed out of Key West harbor on its last, tragic voyage. At the turn of the century, Henry Flagler astounded the entire country by building a technological marvel, an overseas railroad from mainland Florida to Key West, more than 100 miles long. In the 1920s and 1930s, painters, rumrunners, and writers (including Ernest Hemingway and Robert Frost) discovered Key West. During World War II, the federal government and the military war machine permanently altered the island's landscape. In the second half of the 20th century, bohemians, hippies, gays, and jet-setters began writing a new chapter in Key West's social history.

All of these personalities and events are wrapped in Ogle's unique and candid history of the island, an account that will fascinate past and present citizens of the Conch Republic, history buffs who like a well-told tale, and the millions of tourists from all over the world who love this colorful island city.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Key West fans.......2005-09-07

If you watch the Key West sunset on the webcam daily, or dream of a life in the Keys, then this book is for you...

    5 out of 5 stars Riveting history.......2004-05-22

A book on the history of Key West -- with all of its pirates, wreckers, rum runners and assorted scalawags -- should be lively, engaging and colorful. Maureen Ogle has accomplished just that with this readable and fascinating story. I say "story" because it reads that way, as a tale, not a dry recitation of events.

Dry? Hardly. You won't get through this book without your jaw dropping at some of the incidents related in its pages. Ogle's research is thorough with plenty of personal correspondence and colorful firsthand detail that really gives you a resident's eye view of this island.

I'm visiting Key West next year and I can't wait to go. Whether or not you've been there, this book makes for an excellent read. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2004-05-09

I grew up in the Florida Keys, and this historical account has been my favorite so far! I could feel, smell and see Key West through the author's writings, which were peppered with personal stories of the people who lived there throughout history. Wonderful details were included that enhanced my knowledge of events I've always been curious about. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Any who relishes the region will want this lively history.......2004-04-05

Key West has long been relished as a tropical paradise: this provides not just a travelogue of the region, but a history of Key West's many changes; from its Union seizure where citizens lived under martial law for four years, to its technical marvel of a vast overseas railroad which ran from mainland Florida to Key West. Any who relishes the region will want this lively history.

    5 out of 5 stars Anne Honeywood.......2004-03-31

Written with grace and gentle humor, KEY WEST drew me in from the first page. This is not my usual choice for reading but since I'm planning a trip to Key West next year, I wanted to learn about the island's history. This book served it up in perfectly-size proportions, not too academic and yet not frivolous, with old maps and photos and a flowing, easy-to-read narrative that delighted me with splashes of humor when least expected.

In 1924, writer John Dos Passos said Key West was a 'delicious experience.'

I feel the same way about Ogle's lovely book and if the town fathers and mothers haven't given her a key to the city, I sure hope they've given her free lodging whenever she returns for a visit.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars its good!.......2006-03-26

I havent read any other of Josie Litton's books, but I will say that the writing syle is phenomenal in this one and enough to carry the reader through any other flaws the book may have.

the pluses: Its cute, it is like an adorable fairy tale and definitely takes you away from daily drudgery, again the writing is very good. When I say very good, I dont mean better than most romance novels good- I mean New England's answer to Chekov good. This lady really knows how to put a descriptive phrase together.

the minuses- Akora is not a believable place. Some characters have hokey psychic powers which sort of conveniently saves Litton the trouble of writing a really sensible plot. Joanna, the main character is overly competent at everything to the point where she isnt believable. The character development is limited and the characters are sort of flat "good" or "evil" types with very few internal struggles if any.

This book reads like Nathaniel Hawthorne was reincarnated as a 12 yr old girl who wanted to write the story of a disney cartoon. Well, maybe a precocious 12 yr old girl, but still.

Overall, I did rate this book highly and would think that it is enjoyable for any woman that likes romances and many women that dont. I generally despise romance novels, but this one had enough elements of historical glamour, imaginative spark and good writing to make it worth my while.

4 out of 5 stars it was a good read for me but it wasn't WOW!..........2006-02-20

I don't wanna start off by comparing her other books which I thought were excellent to this one or except every book to be like Dream Of Me...

I first read Dream of Me and I loved it. I have read it over and over. I also read the other two books to that story. Dream of Me was the best by far. I bought this book and thought it was an ok read still very entertaining and I like that she made up a fantasy island that everyone would love to see and visit. It took awhile for Joanna and Alex to get together but the book is still worth it, I have the next book to this story and I hope that i will enjoy it as well. I highly recommend Dream of Me.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE JOSIE LITTON!.......2005-12-04

You cannot go wrong with any book she writes! I own most of her books and am in the process of getting the last two!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting beginning to a new trilogy.......2002-07-31

The first thing I appreciated about this book was Ms.Litton's departure from the traditional Regency romance setting of London. Instead the majority of this novel takes place on the ficticious island nation of Akora.
Lady Joanna is looking for her brother Royce who has disappeared on his voyage to Akora. Because Joanna is determined to find him she stows away aboard the ship of an Akoran prince, Alex, and arrives on the island amid controversy and speculation. It would be difficult to say more without giving away the happy ending.
What's nice about this story is that although political undertones and the typical romance elements exist throughout, the characters of Joanna and Alex are well written, completely believable, and likeable as well. I'm looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

    4 out of 5 stars Enter a New World.......2002-06-28

I bought this book merely because it was on sale at a local bookstore. I needed a book to read on a flight to a business trip. It started rather boring before leaping into action at the second chapter.
A willful English outcast, Joanna desperately wants to find her brother, Royce, who traveled to the fabled land of Akora to seek out its secrets. Akora is a fortress of solitude and isolation. No one gets in and no one gets out. That's what the society is encouraged to believe. Joanna is not just anyone. She's a willful woman who only wants her beloved brother back home where he is safe.
She is usually quite conventional, but to her surprise, when Lord Alex, prince of Akora, refuses to help her, she takes a leap (literally) into the dangerous clutches of an age-old evil. She steals away into an Akoran ship which happens to be the ship of the dangerous yet mysterious Alex. He hasn't the heart to do what he should, cast her into the ocean or deliver her to her enemies in desperation to preserve the cruel image of Akora.
Joanna finds herself in a world of legend. Descending from Greek origin, the anciently isolated land of Akora is both old and new. Their knowledge, information, and society is a mixture like Joanna has never seen. Lord Alex, Prince of Akora, is unlike any man she has met.
She has an instant attraction, and he feels the same way, but neither want to let the other interfere with their business, but when a growing political enemy of the leader of Akora threatens Alex's beloved Joanna, he won't let them get away. It doesn't help that Joanna is anything but naive and thrusts herself into the greatest evil in a desperate attempt to save her brother, he must take action.
Another twist to the book is Joanna's odd but exciting power thats orgins are traced to Akora. This is a book that is no stranger to action, love, and excitement. Don't miss the sequel in which Kassandra, Alex's brother, and Royce, Joanna's brother, meet in a dreadfully challenging time in England.
The only downfall in the book would be its confusing revelations about the orgin of Akora and the evolution of the Akorans. Everything else is mostly exciting, although it would have been funner if Joanna played more hard-to-get, but overall, it was enjoyable.

I must add my voice to the chorus here - this is a wonderful book and one that my children have come to love! It is a ferquent bedtime request and the rhyming words and engaging artwork do their relaxing magic. We love it!

    5 out of 5 stars Just a beautiful book!.......2001-01-12

This book is simply a treasure. The story is about a boy and his bear and their blankie, who have an adventure on a dark, stormy night when they help their forest friends build a storm shelter. The rhyming text is very smooth and soothing...it actually slows down my 16-month old and 4 year old! And the illustrations are without a doubt BEAUTIFUL!! This book is requested every night and I'm more than glad to narrate!

5 out of 5 stars Captivating! A MUST HAVE childrens book........2001-01-07

The illustrations and storyline are captivating. My children ages 2 & 3 can't get enough of this one. I don't even mind reading this over and over again! We own a large childrens library and this is at the top of our "favorites list".

5 out of 5 stars Your children will pass this on to future generations.......1999-03-05

When I was a little boy, my big sister gave me an exquisitely illustrated book about a mother bunny who was called upon to deliver a special Easter gift to a dying child living in a remote mountain cabin.

I received the book about 50 years ago, and to this day I vividly recall the highly detailed illustrations and, because of them, I recall the gist of the book as well. I loved that book. And I found myself reading it once in a while until I was nearing my teens. It was just a beautiful book with a beautiful message about courage, altruism, and the responsibility we humans need to have for one another.

I kept the book, and passed it on to my little daughter. She, in turn, has read it repeatedly to my grandchildren.

Barbara Upton has the artistic genius needed to make a book into an heirloom. I don't know that Klickitat will rise to that level, but it might, because the book is very attractive and highly readable. If it fails to become a family treasure, it would be only because the language in the poem would not appeal to children beyond maybe 7 or so (my youngest grandchildren are 8, and they object to the word "blankie" in the poem, for example.) I think a book earns a special place in a person's heart when the book's message says something to "kids" of all ages, in language that does not turn off older children.

I hope a quality book publisher hires Upton to illustrate a real book, with a story line that will appeal both to tykes who can't yet read, and to kids who learned to read years ago, yet pick up the book from time to time simply because its message is still relevant, the language is not obviously geared to toddlers, and the illustrations are appealing unto themselves. All these elements make a mere book into a family treasure.

As I said, Upton has the gift to produce works of art that children will want to carry into their adult lives. I think Klickitat will pass down for a few generations. And I think competent book publishers will recognize Upton's genius for beautiful art, and turn her loose on a big project like my treasured Easter story. Let's hope so, anyway.

If they do, I'll be one of the first in line to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest illustrated children books on the market........1998-06-14

The Adventure on Klickitat Island by Hillary Hippely and illustrated by Barbara Upton is a great example of collaborative story telling and fine artwork. The story is about a small boy and his teddy bear who wake up in the middle of the night in the midst of a thunderstorm. They are concerned about the animals on Klickitat Island and set off to help them, accompanied by the boy's faithful "blankie".

The story/poem has a wonderful rhythm, but it is the exceptional artwork that sets this book apart from many others. The artwork could only be called sumptuous, with multiple themes interleaved from page to page. It is a visual experience where adults easily will find continuous enjoyment and a story that will have the average child both enthralled and calmed before bedtime.

This should be a must for your child!

      Book Description

Color, vitality, seductive landscapes, and dazzling blue seas—the essential ingredients of the graceful arc of islands distributed around the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea.

The variety and beauty of the islands of the Caribbean, celebrated here in Joan Tapper's commentaries and Nik Wheeler's breathtaking photography, have become bywords for the good life, as places to visit and places to live.

There is something for everyone here in the choice of islands. The larger ones—Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico—offer cities, resorts, beaches, leisure facilities, and lush interiors. Smaller islands, like Antigua and Martinique, have developed reputations as places for the discriminating visitor, offering fine dining and stylish night spots. And for those for whom "island" is synonymous with getting away from it all, there is every variety of small exclusive hideaway, from Mustique and Nevis to islands that are just bumps in the ocean.

The physical beauties of all these islands—pink, white, and golden sands stretching between the sea and the flowering landscapes—are all reflected in this book. But the author and photographer also convey a relaxed lifestyle: quaint harbors and winding streets, houses both grand and humble, elegant hotels, quirky bars and restaurants, open-air markets, cuisine, and art.

Whether looked at as a group or taken individually, these islands are truly paradise on earth, fully celebrated in this lovely book. Over 200 color photographs.

        Book Description

A path-breaking work when first published in 1973, The Southern Dream remains the standard work on attempts by the South to spread American slavery into the tropics--Cuba, Mexico, and Central America in particular--before the Civil War. Robert May shows that the South's expansionists had no more success than when they tried to extend slavery westward. As one after another of their plots failed, southern imperialists lost hope that their labor system might survive in the Union. Blaming northern Democrats and antislavery Republicans alike for their disappointed dreams, alienated southerners embraced secession as an alternative means to achieving the tropical slave empire that they craved. Had war not erupted at Fort Sumter, Confederates might have attempted to conquer the Caribbean basin.

May's book serves as an important reminder that foreign policy cannot be divorced from the writing of American history, even in regard to seemingly domestic matters like the causes of the Civil War. Contending that America's Manifest Destiny became "sectionalized" in the 1850s, he explains why southerners considered Caribbean expansion so important and shows how southerners used their clout in Washington to initiate diplomatic schemes like the notorious Ostend Manifesto and presidential attempts to buy the slaveholding island of Cuba from Spain. He also describes southern filibustering plots against Latin American domains, such as the aborted designs on Mexico of the colorful Knights of the Golden Circle and the actual invasions of Central America by native Tennessean William Walker. Walker struck a major blow for the expansion of slavery when he legalized it during his occupation of Nicaragua. Most important, May relates how Caribbean plots affected American public opinion and ignited sectional friction in congressional debates. May argues that President-elect Abraham Lincoln might have saved the Union in the winter of 1860-61, had he agreed to last minute concessions facilitating slavery's future expansion towards the tropics.

May's fascinating and often surprising account internationalized the causes of the Civil War. It should be read by anyone who wishes to understand the complex reasons why Americans came to blows with each other in 1861. This reprinting features a new preface by the author, which addresses the latest research on the Caribbean question.

          Book Description

Virgin Gorda is the second largest of the British Virgin Island and one of the most beautiful, most unspoiled and tranquil islands in the whole of the Caribbean. Far from being a mere coffee table travel book, Caribbean Dreams avoids the Caribbean clichs and portrays the essence of the island, allowing the pictures to tell their own story about this extraordinary paradise.
