5 out of 5 stars A Truly Remarkable Book.......2007-08-09

Fourteen years ago, my mother read this book to me, and it is something I have never quite forgotten. Sure, many of the chapters' images were lost to the background of my mind. But I remembered the book's sense of adventure and the magic behind its words. Hearing my mother read it, its story was completely enthralling and its characters were real to me. Also, many of its images did stick with me and, when I have tried, I could always call them fondly to mind. Now, fourteen years have passed and, having re-read it, I am just as impressed as I was, before. But now, having also read selections from Emerson and Thoreau, I was also amazed by how much transcendental philosophy is packed into this book. Reading it can be a real learning experience, even though it doesn't feel like that at all. It feels like a great, fast read, with wonderful characters and an incredible tale. Why did I choose to re-read it? Two weeks ago, I was considering my life, trying to figure out what path to choose, and I realized that I was picturing this book's character, Eddy, staring into a mirror. (You'll probably know what I'm talking about after you've read this book.) Anyway, this one of the best children's books EVER! You should read this!

5 out of 5 stars Mystery, adventure, and fantasy fulfillment to please anyone.......2006-06-19

The Diamond in the Window is the story of Eddy and Eleanor Hall, who live in a fantastic house in historic Concord, Massachusetts. I particularly enjoyed these books as a kid because I grew up in Lexington, right next door to Concord, and it was easy for me to picture the Hall's house and neighborhood. Langton's children's books also have just the right touch of magic, mixed in with real-life, to make a real-life kid feel like anything is possible.

Things are tough for Eddy and Eleanor. Their Uncle Freddy is perpetually confused, and their Aunt Lily is overworked, struggling to pay back taxes on their house so that they don't lose it. And then a wonderful thing happens. Eleanor and Eddy discover a hidden staircase that leads to a secret room at the top of their house. The room has toys and books, an elaborate castle built of block, and two small beds. They learn from Aunt Lily that the room belonged to their aunt and uncle, Ned and Nora, who disappeared when they were children. Aunt Lily's fiance, and Uncle Fred's friend, Prince Krishna, also disappeared.

Eddy and Eleanor promptly decide to search for the missing Ned, Nora, and Prince Krishna. They uncover a clue-filled poem, and start having fantastic shared dreams (or are they dreams?), in which they uncover secrets from the poem. These dreams are wonderful experiences, overlaid with menacing fright. But slowly, the determined children work through the clues, and the dreams, trying to find their missing aunt and uncle, and uncover a treasure that will save the family home.

The Diamond in the Window is filled with excellent adventures: kids turning into toys, and mice, and wandering inside of mazes. Some of the adventures hide larger lessons about loyalty and being true to who you are, but the lessons are rarely overt. The story is also filled with historical references about the Revolutionary War, and Walden and Thoreau, and Louisa May Alcott. Again, not so overt - these things are part of the world that Eddy and Eleanor, and especially Uncle Freddy, live in.

I couldn't really say how well this story will hold up for kids who aren't from Lexington and Concord, and who don't fondly remember it from their childhood. But I suspect that that Jane Langton taps into universal themes of mystery, adventure, and fantasy fulfillment that will please anyone. I'm glad that I visited again.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable!.......2005-12-16

I read literally hundreds of books in my youth, most of them long ago forgotten, but never forgot this one! I found this book in my elementary school library around 1979/ 1980, and read it several times in the next couple of years. I looked for it later- in every bookstore/ used bookstore I went into for years- (I could remember the title, but not the authors name) and couldn't find it anywhere. Then, along came the internet, and Voila! I found it, ordered it and re-read it. As an adult, I'm surprised and pleased to find that this absolute GEM of a book has lost none of it's charm and mystery. A wonderful story, intriguing mystery, lovable characters, perfect! Highly recommeneded for any young person- entertaining and educational at once- and truly Unforgettable!

5 out of 5 stars Imagination Abounds!.......2004-11-14

This was such a great book, I read it when I was a kid and recently something jogged my memory so I bought it. I read it again and it was still just as great, perhaps even better than when I was a kid. A classic. I'm going to pass it on to my kids!

5 out of 5 stars A book for all ages........2004-08-28

While I was a voracious reader as a child, there are a very few books from my childhood that stand out in my memory like beacons. This is one of those books. I was probably eight or nine when I first read it, and I still remember to this day lessons I learned from this book -- like putting the interests of others before your own, for example. One of the author's gifts is that she was able to teach such important lessons without this reader realizing he was being taught. As far as I was concerned at the time it was a vastly entertaining and enjoyable read. It was also my first introduction to the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau (albeit at a level a child could comprehend). If this book were required reading for every child, our world would be a better place.

4 out of 5 stars I WANTED TO POP THE POPPET!!!!!.......2007-09-19

For three quarters of the book I found myself frustrated! I actually wanted to crawl into the pages in order to choke the life out of the Goldie character. Her rantings reminded me of either a nine year old child or someone whom had acquired a serious amount of brain damage. Never in my life have I become so irritated with an imaginary character. Saber, on the other hand was delightful page after page. By the end of the book, I ended up I loving the both of them. The ending was marvelous and perfect. It really was a good book. If an author can make a reader irritated with the personality of one of her characters, then the author has done a terrific job of making them real!

4 out of 5 stars I love this author!.......2002-10-01

If you love to laugh you'll love this author's work. Everyone of her books have been filled with humor and passion and love. I hate to put them down to do anything else. I've often stayed up late reading them or missed meals just because they are better than food!

In this tale Rebecca brings two mismatched characters together for a fun excitng romp. The heroine is Goldie Mae an American beauty and the hero is Saber West a very English Duke. Now Goldie has traveled to England with her uncle to hopefully have a real home. Her uncle is a diruptable drunk who has gotten them kicked out of countless towns in the states. Goldie's great aunt Della Mae has passed on and left them her cottage. Della Mae used to be the cook at Ravenhurst and Goldie's uncle tells the whole village that they were invited by the Duke himself to spend some time with him in London. Now this isn't true but Goldie has devised a plan to make it seem true so that they won't have to leave again. The Duke hasn't lived at Ravenhurst for years, and no one can remember what he looked like exactly so Goldie figures she will find a man who sorta looks "Dukish" and give him "Duke lessons" and pass him off to the village. The only flaw is finding the man.

Meanwhile Saber West aka Lord Marion Westbrook Saberfield Tremayne, Duke of Ravenhurst, has lost a bet with his best friends. He now has to be their slave for two weeks at his other country home. He is very unwilling to say the least but suddenly becomes very interested in being a common man when he comes across a very naked Goldie bathing in his pond. He soon learns of her plan and goes along with it for fun but also for the fact that he is strongly attracted to Goldie and wants her badly. He is facinated by her and her simple ways. She says things that have him struggling not to laugh one minute and holding himself back from strangling her the next. She has turned his life upside down in a matter of days and he is quite willing to let her.

Goldie has no idea who he is but finds herself drawn to him. He makes her feel beautiful for the first time and gives her hope for a real home in England.

This story is a very sweet tale of how opposites attract and bring out the best in each other. I loved this book and will reread it many times. If you can get a copy do you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Rebecca Paisley Never Misses!!!.......2001-03-08

I loved loved loved this book. It had me laughing one minute and crying the next. I don't know how Paisley comes up w/ all the funny dialogue...it's hilarious. I have all her books and anthologies. Her "Midnight and Magnolias" is fabulous, so is "Heartstrings." I wish Ms.Paisley would write more romances. Her older books should also be republished. They are all fantastic! Pick up a Paisley book somehow...you will not be disappointed. You have my guarantee on that!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute brilliance of comedy and romance!.......2000-09-06

I absolutely loved this book from the moment I picked it up and the heroine had her own way of thinking. This book made me laugh out loud with tears in my eyes it was so humor filled! I loved how the author incorporated her wit into the love story! Big was her lifetime friend and she called him that because he was a dwaft but he was the most handsomest man you ever did lay eyes on but many didn't because of his height. Hawk was the hero whom she married in the end although she felt betrayed. The phrases she used to describe people and situations absolutely tickled me pink! She used one phrase with "Agnes" in it but I can't recall the entire phrase but that was one of many! I hate this book is out of print because a friend of mine let me borrow it and every since I've been looking everywhere for this book.

If you love romance and comedy this is the book for you! It really deals with how courtship can be fun but deceiving. Well, this is my review of Diamonds and Dreams if you ever get a copy of it NEVER let it go! I'm a die-heart fan of Rebecca's and I pray she never stops writing!

3 out of 5 stars Diamonds of the Night by James Hagan.......2000-04-26

This book will be of interest to therapists more so than the lay person. Hagan's writing style is at best beautifully poetic but at times tediously repetitious and somewhat stilted. Obviously well researched, it includes some lovely quotes and special dreams particularly of his client "Annie" recorded over a two year period. Dissapointing that the artwork is not referenced - also the lay out of the book is a little lacking and disorganised detracting from the quality of the information.

5 out of 5 stars A jewel.......1999-05-05

This is a mystical, poetic, and inspirational book on dreams and Jungian thought. Dr. Hagan writes in short, declarative, powerful, and sometimes stilted sentences, weaving a wonderful aesthetic/spiritual introduction to Jung.

5 out of 5 stars VERY COMPREHENSIVE AND ACCURATE REVIEW OF DREAMS.......1998-05-21

I AM A LEFT BRAIN INDIVIDUAL. TO WORK MY RIGHT BRAIN IS VERY DIFFICULT. THIS BOOK WAS EASY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND. IT HELPED ME TO REMEMBER DREAMS, WHERE IN THE PAST IT WAS SELDOM THAT I COULD ACTUALLY REMEMBER MY DREAM. MR. HAGAN SAYES DREAMS DO NOT LIE. SUCH THE TRUTH. I NOW GO TO BED EVERY NIGHT WITH A SMILE ON MY FACE READY TO SEE MY FRIENDS AGAIN. THIS IS SUCH A 180 DEGREE VIEW FOR ME AS I NEVER REALIZED JUST HOW IMPORTANT MY DREAMS WERE TO ME. MORE IMPORTANTLY, ONE WOULD BE AMAZED AT HOW EASY PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THEIR DREAMS. WHILE THIS IS A PERSONS MOST IMPORTANT SECRETS, PEOPLE ARE SO READY TO DISCUSS THEM. IT IS A GREAT CONVERSATION PIECE AS WELL. AFTER YOU READ THIS BOOK,WHICH TAKES APPROXIMATELY 10 HOURS, YOU WILL KNOW ALL OF THE GOOD QUESTIONS TO ASK IN ORDER TO KEEP A CONVERSATION GOING ABOUT THAT PERSONS DREAMS FOR HOURS. AND BY THE WAY, YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH ABOUT THAT PERSON THAT YOU NEVER KNEW BEFORE THAT IT MIGHT SCARE YOU.

I READ IT TWICE, AND REFER BACK TO IT NOW AND AGAIN. ENJOY, AND I HOPE IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE AS IT HAS MINE. GOOD LUCK!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another keeper from Heath - RIO Award Winner 2005.......2005-10-21

Sadly, several publishers are doing away with their Trad Regency lines. In this big push for erotica, I fear they are losing site of different strokes for different folks. Janet Mullany, a new voice in Trads, shows she can hit the mark, even heat up the formula some. However, my favourite Trad writer has to be Sandra Heath. I simply adore her Lavender Blue, one of my all time favourite books of any genre. It's quite clear Heath knows her lore, traditions and the shadowy mysteries of the British Isles, and imbues her wonderful stories with those rich textures. I cannot think of any writer who weaves so much history and lore into her stories with such subtle mastery.

While Lavender Blue remains in my top ten keepers, this is another delightful story from a talent that should receive a bigger showcase. Heath issues an invitation (as she does with all her strong tales) come to where legends, myths and magic still exist, where the supernatural is natural. She immediately lures you into the story that carries the reader from London to Wales, and even to Russia.

Athan, Lord Griffin has a portrait of a woman in his house, a painting that has fascinated him. So, Ellie Rutherford intrigues him when he spies her in the garden of a country inn, wearing clothes of a maid. He is unaware Ellie's own garments were being clean, an accident that ended up with a large portion of another's meal in her lap. He thinks she is just a common maid. But her beauty aside, what peaks his interest most is that Ellie bears and uncanny resemblance to the portrait in his home. He purchased the painting and strangely, he feels he's
fallen in love with the mysterious woman. Now here she seems to be conjured from his dreams, a dream where the woman is named Carolina and she was his wife.

Ellie has been through one tragedy after another in her young life. The death of her parents and the loss of her family fortune, leaves her future up in the air. She considers herself lucky that her uncle has given her a home in Wales. So when the handsome stranger steals a kiss at the inn, it seemed like magic.

Athan instantly wants Ellie, only there are problems on the romance front. He is betrothed to another, Fleur Tudor, a daughter of a good friend who is now deceased. But this isn't the only obstacle in their way. Ellie believe Athan was responsible for the loss of her family's fortune, which led to her father's suicide. Despite all, the Welsh lord draws her.

Ellie leaves the inn to go to her Uncle John's home in Wales, while Athan goes to St. Petersburg on a mission. In spite of distance, love has a way of prevailing.

Saying any more, would spoil the delight of this charming tale. As with her previous works, the characters steal your heart, showing Sandra Heath is one very, very talented writer. Lavender Blue has a new book beside it. My Sandra Heath keeper shelf just keeps collecting books. I don't re-read many books these days. But I know Lavender Blue and Diamond Dreams will call to me again.

3 out of 5 stars More historical than romance.......2005-04-21

To say that this Heath was a Regency Romance would be untrue, as it is more historical suspense than a romance.
Ellie Rutherford's life is destroyed utterly by a mysterious fraud robbing her father of all his money and plunges their estate into mortgage and debt. They travel to London and the Unicorn Bank to put a stop to it and fail. Ellie's father commits suicide and she is left destitute. She is alone in the world apart from a missing uncle.
She meets, by chance, Lord Griffin. They are mesmerised by each other and he kisses her. Athan, Lord Griffin is stunned by her, as she is the image of a painting in his possession. A very improper painting. Neither think to meet again.
Then Ellie finds her Uncle John, who co-incidentally, lives on Griffin's Welsh estate trying to make a living making fine china.
There are several complications. Athan is almost engaged to a young woman under his care, Fleur Tudor - who is not what she seems. However, it is the melodramatic machinations of the Russian, Prince Paul Dalmatsky involving revenge and a stolen diamond that really drive the plot.
The romance, alas, really takes second place. It is very much 'at first sight' and the tale of the portrait is over complicated, confusing and (at bottom) faintly ridiculous. There are several scenes of psychic connection between the pair that have a very good romantic charge. However, Ellie's being in the presence of others at these times, negates their appeal. There's no real romance between them, of discovery and doubt and fears regarding each other.
The tale moves well, is full of drama, but is not Heath at her best. Not enough feeling, maybe, between the hero and heroine.

4 out of 5 stars Heath's Description Is Vivid and Impressive!.......2005-03-08

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If you truly want to travel to the England of yesteryear, pick up a Sandra Heath book. This is an author who can write description! Ms. Heath has the outstanding ability to firmly put her reader into a story's setting . . . DIAMOND DREAMS basks in Heath's unique golden touch.

Athan, Lord Griffin is a wealthy landowner. In the Welsh county of Glamorgan, Castle Griffin rises above rich Celtic land. Ancient land charged with legends, myths, and magic. London, England and Lord Griffin is a tender morsel in the Marriage Stakes. So sought after is Lord Griffin, he decides to invent a wife - a fictitious bride to ward off pursuing females. His fake bride takes on a presence when Griffin purchases a portrait from a London gallery. Soon the portrait's essence captivates Griffin and in time he realizes the painting's mysterious charmer holds his soul - his bridal fantasy is now firmly rooted deep within his heart - his fictional 'Caroline'.

So who is Ellie Rutherford? Is she Griffin's 'Caroline' come to life?

In the Welsh mountains, on the estate of Castle Griffin, lives the potter, John Bailey. A gentle man who takes in his penniless niece, Ellie Rutherford. However, Ellie's Uncle John has a troubled history and one man's evil calls. John Bailey is forced to surrender. Heath now opens her story and allows blackmail, treason, and smuggling to proceed. Remarkably, through the magic of this author's pen, the sightseeing reader journeys through the Welsh countryside, into the Tower of London, and over the wintry seas to beautiful St. Petersburg. DIAMOND DREAMS is a gentle adventure filled with corruption.

Sandra Heath has an enjoyable style. The reader senses, throughout this story, this is an author who takes the time to research, an author who cares deeply about the era she so elaborately writes about. Her background material is first-rate. However, DIAMOND DREAMS seems to lack something - it doesn't have enough bite, enough tingle, enough pizzazz. Therefore, I rate this story a solid B+, based on Heath's fantastic ability to take me to the Napoleonic era of the nineteenth century.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERCALIFRAGILISTIC- EXPIALIDOCIOUS.......2005-02-22

There is an implicit invitation in all of the books by Sandra Heath. To paraphrase (just slightly) from her newest book, DIAMOND DREAMS, it is: `come with me to this ancient Celtic land of legends, myths and magic, where it is easy to believe in the fantastic and supernatural.' Of course, she is Welsh, which explains a good deal, I think.

In the first few pages we meet a horse-charmer (who also has `perceptive' gifts) and a tea-thrower. Well, and why not? These are but two of the marvelous supporting characters to be found in her newest tale which takes us from London to Wales to St. Petersburg, Russia. Every detail fits perfectly, and if you can't believe, then you either have a heart of stone or no heart at all. True, there are some little bits of coincidence, but then, all of life has them, as well. They're still believable as she intertwines them in her tale.

When Athan, Lord Griffin, glimpses Ellie Rutherford in a country inn's garden, she is wearing a maid's clothing. Her own garments are being cleaned after having someone else's meal spilled all over her. This episode of mistaken identity heralds several such incidents throughout the book, not all of which will end happily. He knows only that hers is the face of an unknown woman in a portrait he's purchased, and with whom he's fallen in love. He has, in fact, identified the portrait as being of Caroline, his wife, who just may be a figment of his imagination.

Lord Griffin is betrothed to one Fleur Tudor, the supposed daughter of a good friend, now deceased. Once Athan sees Ellie, however, he wishes for nothing more than to find a way to marry her, instead. Although she suspects him of being involved with the financial ruin of her father (which led to his suicide) she cannot help being attracted to the Welsh lord.

They part, Ellie to live with her uncle John in Wales, Athan to visit St. Petersburg, on a diplomatic mission. Even though separated by thousands of miles, they share a fantastical episode which convinces them of their love for each other, if not how to make it all work out as it should.

The detail in this book is splendid. The characters are fascinating, and the story itself is unusual yet somehow entirely believable. DIAMOND DREAMS is Sandra Heath at her very, very best, and definitely belongs on every reader's `must have' list.

5 out of 5 stars Stories to Stir the Imagination, Album #1.......2007-07-17

Stories to Stir the Imagination: Volume One is a Parents' Choice Recommended product. This one hour audio book contains four classic stories: The Emperor's New Clothes, Toads and Diamonds, The Story of William Tell, and the Golden Touch.

The overall theme of this CD is that greed always leads to disaster. Each story in this edition illustrates morality triumphing over greed. In The Emperor's New Clothes, the emperor makes a fool of himself because of his love of fine clothing. Toads and Diamonds looks at two daughters, one hardworking charitable girl and one lazy greedy girl, who each get what they deserve. The Story of William Tell tells the story of one man's efforts to rid Switzerland of a greedy, evil ruler.

Baseball lends itself to nostalgic contemplation probably better than any other major league sport. Its players seem in retrospect like cult musicians from the golden age of jazz, complete with funky nicknames like "Pops," "Yaz," and "Eck." Maybe these aren't as elegant as "Bird" or "Trane," but to a true fan they carry the same choice familiarity. Diamond Dreams celebrates the legend of baseball with this kind of reverence and appreciation.

Walter Iooss, a Sports Illustrated photographer for over 30 years, captures what he calls in his introduction "a thread that has connected the various stages of my life, as well as my photographic career... baseball." As Iooss also says, "every shot has a story," and these photos of the absolute greats in the history of the game such as Hank Aaron, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson, Yogi Berra, Cal Ripken, Reggie Jackson, Ken Griffey, Jr. and many others provide glimpses of heroes in action as well as often intimate portraits of self-appointed gods and humble team players. Washington Post-based syndicated columnist Tom Boswell's accompanying prose adds an extra dimension every bit as revealing and poignant as the Iooss pictures. He bares tales from his own experience and observations over many years of following the game firsthand in the dugout trenches. In one passage he describes a scene he witnessed where then 45-year-old Sandy Koufax, working as a Dodger pitching coach, pitched "off the rubber" in a batting practice 45 minutes before a World Series game and threw so perfectly he almost destroyed "the confidence of the heart of the Dodger batting order" before another Dodger coach ran up and whispered something in his ear to end the session. Moments like this captured in both the photographs and the text, make Diamond Dreams a truly worthwhile book for anyone who might be what Boswell refers to as a "good baseball fan." --Walt Opie

5 out of 5 stars Great For Any Baseball Fan.......1999-03-13

I, being a Ken Griffey, Junior and baseball fan for a while, found this book very interesting. It has great photos, nice descriptions, and a great baseball player on the cover :). This is one of the best baseball books I have ever seen. A lot of baseball history is captured in the pages. Recommended to any person who likes baseball!
