Book Description

Finally, a book that captures the spirit of Notre Dame. One of the most famous universities in the world, Notre Dame has come to symbolize excellence and faith in action, which sets it apart as an institution and a place that has deeply influenced millions of people. Call it a mystique or grace; there is something about the lure and lore of Notre Dame that evokes admiration and respect. The Spirit of Notre Dame marks the first time that a single book collects the stories that personify the character that is uniquely Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is the Golden Dome, the Victory March, the Basilica, the Grotto, playing fields, dorms, chapels, the library, classrooms, and research centers. But most of all, it is people: from faith-filled visionaries and world-renowned scholars to celebrated coaches and athletes to professors, students, janitors and cooks, volunteers and friends. From the university’s bold founder, Rev. Edward Sorin, to American legends of the football field (and silver screen) Knute Rockne, the Gipper, and Rudy, Notre Dame is the setting for some of our culture’s most uplifting stories of perseverance in the face of tremendous odds.  The Spirit of Notre Dame tells these stories and more . . . of miraclulous athletic comebacks and incredible victories against the odds, of the Notre Dame graduate who survived the Bataan Death March by focusing on the university, of football stars like Chris Zorich who overcame tough circumstances, and of walk-on players who realized their dreams of playing for the Fighting Irish. Included in these pages are stories of the women’s teams who have won national championships in basketball and soccer, and dedicated leaders such as Fathers Corby, Hesburgh, and Malloy; professors Frank O’Malley, Emil T. Hofman, and a line of great teachers whose blood is in the bricks; coaches Leahy, Ara, Holtz, Willingham, and McGraw; and a host of graduates like Dr. Tom Dooley and Judge Ann Williams who have devoted themselves to serving others both on the campus and in the world. Engaging, amusing, and inspiring, The Spirit of Notre Dame is the absolute essential title for the millions of people who have a place in their heart for the Fighting Irish.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Gift !.......2005-10-04

I received this book as a gift, and the gift was more than just a book, it was the "gift of spirit of Notre Dame".
I went to a huge state university, and was little more than a number. At Notre Dame it must be so very different, the students become a part of a "family". They were nurtured, cared about and stayed a part of the school's extended family. What a wonderful feeling of warmth and security this must generate to those many students who were away from home!
The Langfords do an excellent job of re-creating Notre Dame's unusual history, and the determination of its staff to keep the college open despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
The stories of individual students were sensitively told -and I found myself in tears several times as I read this book.
Although I've not yet visited the school, I do want to go there to meet the staff and students , to see campus, especially the grotto that is so vividly described in the book, and to FEEL the Spirit of Notre Dame for myself.
It's a wonderful gift!

5 out of 5 stars I've been waiting for such a book........2005-09-06

I'm surprised a book like this hasn't already been published--There are so many great stories from Notre Dame, some of them even part of American lore itself. As a graduate of the university I'm obviously not completely impartial, but I got a great deal of substance out of the stories that are told here. I would recommend this as the perfect gift to give anyone who has a fondness for Notre Dame.

Book Description

The Best of James Herriot is one of the most extraordinary volumes ever devoted to the work and world of a contemporary writer. Within its covers are unforgettable episodes from the remarkable series of memoirs that began with All Creatures Great and Small-"the ones my family and I have laughed at over the years and the ones my readers have said they most enjoyed," as Herriot, himself, put it. Yet the book is far more than a simple anthology: Its gorgeous pages also include hundreds of line drawings and color photographs, capturing Herriot's Yorkshire in a worthy complement to the writer's words. The 1991 publication of Every Living Thing, rendered the original edition of this book incomplete. This fall will mark the publication of the complete, definitive edition with the addition of five of his best, more recent stories, as well as new art. Once again The Best of James Herriot becomes the quintessential Herriot volume-one of those invaluable books that will be loved as much in decades to come as it is today.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for all ages.......2007-01-16

A very bright and beautiful book, with nice pictures and side articles, which help you know more about animals described in the book. All stories are easy to read and full of sparkly humor and affection to animals and nature. Reading it you may easily find yourself laughing over things at one page, and crying at the next one. This book is equally great for both children and adults.

5 out of 5 stars Many hours of pleasure await the reader of Jame Herriot.......2007-01-10

If you love animals and you haven't read James Herriot then you simply must! These stories are so full of humour, sadness, joy and lots of plain common sense and wisdom that you will love every minute of reading them. It is amazing to read that the author had such a long struggle to have his work published that he almost gave up. What a loss to the world that would have been! The story of his life is told by his son in the book "The Real James Herriot" - make sure you read that one also!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy!.......2005-11-05

What can one add to the already vivid detail of the life of Alfred Wight? Fortunately nothing except the illustrations for those of us with little perception of what the farming community and the towns around Yorkshire were like in the 30's and 40's. The fact too, that it's in hardcover will ensure it's permanent place on your bookshelf of treasured writings.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of James Herriot.......2005-10-16

Even though the book was used, it was in excellent condition. The pictures throughout help to make this book a very good purchase for the money. James Herriot is a wonderful storyteller and the reader finds himself/herself able to have the experience of almost being there in person.

4 out of 5 stars Don't expect to laugh as much or long as usual.......2005-02-16

Knowing the unabridged version of one of Herriot's books, I was disappointed at not being able to laugh as much with these, shortened versions of the stories and abridged collection in general. But even if you have Herriot's unabridged volumes, this book is still worth buying for the illustrations and descriptions of his tools and world, not to mention the photos. If you buy it and it makes you go out and buy the whole collection, just give this copy as a gift; it's that worthy.

Book Description

The Pampered Chef is Doris Christopher’s extraordinary account of how she turned an innovative concept and $3,000 investment into a business with annual sales approaching the billion-dollar mark. It is packed with real-life lessons and inspiring insights for small-business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs.

In 1980 Doris Christopher, a former home economist and teacher, was itching to get back into the workforce after an eight-year hiatus as a stay-at-home mom. Drawing on her personal and professional expertise, and determined to make cooking easier and more convenient for families, she started selling high-quality kitchen tools through cooking demonstrations to groups of women in their homes. Today, the company she started in her basement, The Pampered Chef, is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary and has grown into a corporation (now owned by Berkshire Hathaway) with tens of thousands of independent Kitchen Consultants who present more than a million Kitchen Shows a year, attended by more than 12 million people.

The Pampered Chef is the story of the vision, energy, hard work, and chutzpah that drove Christopher and her company to the height of success. She describes her early days as a “one-woman show,” chronicles the company’s gradual expansion, its challenges and growing popularity, and the process, offers invaluable advice and sound strategies on how to found and grow a business, including:

• Hard learned lessons for start-up entrepreneurs

• How to create a business concept and set your priorities

• Knowing when to expand and when to slow growth so that demand doesn’t overwhelm your operations or supplies

• How to counter the naysayers and deal with adversity

Today, as at the company’s founding, achieving a better balance between work and family remains central to The Pampered Chef’s mission. The Pampered Chef brings Christopher’s recipe for success to women, and men, everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars I want to sell Pampered Chef.......2006-04-08

I absolutely loved this book. Doris Christopher's ideas and humble beginnings are absolutely inspiring! She has built an amazing company and shares it for everyone to realize their own potential. Her basic no nonsense attitude towards life and her company are shared in this incredible story. I do not sell Pamperd Chef, but if I was not trying to build another direct sales business I know I would after reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Inspiring.......2006-02-04

I have been purchasing Pampered Chef products for over 16 years and my husband and I have always been huge fans. After many years of buying from someone else, I decided to give it a try and then so did my husband. . . yes, we are both consultants because we believe so much in the products.

I signed up as a consultant a few days after the book was released and read it in one night! After reading the book I was more of a fan than ever. The story is very inspiring to anyone who wants to take the leap of faith in themselves and try to start their own business.

Doris' vision of having a business to earn extra money and still have time to raise her family is very much alive today as it was 25 years ago. The book takes you through the 25 years of her dream from where she started the business in her basement with $3,000 to being the founder a of multi-million dollar company with thousands of women and men who work with The Pampered Chef as hobbyist, part- and full-time consultants.

A must read for anyone who wants to be inspired to start their own business.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars please return to writing Danelle!.......2007-06-18

After trying a series of boring, mundane romances I thought I'd try book two in this Georgian Romance series. I'm so glad I did.

Book one was superb, and book two was fantastic as well. If you are like me and you are getting sick of some of the romances being put out now-basically a pretty cover but no substance-then let me recommend this book two you as a pleasant diversion.

The hero and heroine are well fleshed out- the writer will have you caring for what happens to them. The book is very emotional and will have you tearing up one moment and laughing the next. I loved Amy-a true Heroine with a heart of gold who has faced cruelty all her life but it never made her a bitter person. She is truly a sweet woman and Charles is a true hero. It is so refreshing to read a love story about two good people.

The De Montforte family is extremely well written-in the same vein of other Romance family's ala' The Malloreans or Bastiens. The villains are truly horrible and the friendships are heartwarming. The bedroom scenes are sensual but loving and are more about love than lust. The book is very action filled and you'll want to stay up reading through to the conclusion.

The only sad thing is that it seems that Danelle Harmon has stopped writing which is a shame as she has true talent for Historical Romance. I hope she will one day return as she is needed in the genre.

So if you are looking for exceptional Historical Romance here it is. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars The only book in this series I can bestow a 5 star rating.......2006-01-08

I loved Charles, he is one of my top 10 heroes ever!
I loved this story. Amy was also excellent. My only complaint, a relatively tiny one, is that he didn't have feelings for his daughter Charlotte. I could understand if he didn't feel very close to her, since his brother Gareth was raising her & all, but I would have thought he would have felt SOME kind of a connection!
If Charles had a downfall, this was it. But that aside, he was great! He's probably number 10 on my top 10 male list.

1-10 scale: 9.9 I just wish Charles had loved Charlotte is all.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!.......2003-06-05

I am absolutely loving this series of books about these sexy brothers!! I thought that the first installment "The Wild One" was fabulous..well..let me tell you.."The Beloved One" was even BETTER! I LOVED this story. Charles and Amy were two wonderfully developed characters..they were so meant for eachother. It was heartwrenchingly bittersweet watching them fall in love..seeing all of the hardships that they went through and overcame together..I Love this family!! I am as we speak beginning the next in the series..Andrews story. I HIGHLY recommend these books..DEFINITE KEEPERS!..(In order they are.. The Wild One, The Beloved One, The Defiant One, and The Wicked One...enjoy!)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books of 1998!!!.......1999-02-12

After falling in love with the hero of Ms. Harmon's THE WILD ONE, I couldn't wait to read the sequel, THE BELOVED ONE. It was well worth the wait. This was truly one of the very BEST books of 1998! Lord Charles de Montforte was a hero To-Die-For ... he was so real, so human, so tortured, and so handsome, that I wished I could take him home with me. He was larger than life. If only there were men like him in REAL life! I can't wait to hear what happens to the rest of the brothers. This series is awesome. Bring on Lucien!

3 out of 5 stars I was disappointed.......1998-12-31

After reading "The Wild One" I was expecting more from this novel. While Charles is a beleaguered hero I found him to be missing much of the charm that had made his brother endearing in "The Wild One." While the set up of Charles' fiance and child made a great obstacle to be used in this story, it seemed to be underdeveloped and unrealistically resolved. I was expecting a sequel that would explore the problems created in the first novel and instead was left feeling that the author took the easy (and unsatisfying) way out. This didn't seem to me to be the best work Harmon has done. Too much of the central family conflict in England seemed to be disposed of at whim.

Book Description

Offering a glimpse at the values that built this country, The One-Room Schoolhouse is a poignant, engaging, beautiful and heart-warming tribute to an enduring slice of Americana.
From 1750 through about 1950, the one-room schoolhouse was a common fixture on the American landscape, with as many as 200,000 in total across the land. Today, approximately 450 one-room schoolhouses are still in use.

Despite the decline in numbers, it remains a powerful presence, and its mere mention conjures up feelings of warmth and nostalgia for a long ago time. The One-Room Schoolhouse pays homage to this American icon and is a tour of these structures still standing, detailing the best examples from the forty-eight contiguous states. Exploring working schools, some in existence for more than 100 years, schools restored as historic museums, and schools converted into private residences, The One-Room Schoolhouse touches and inspires us by sharing "conversations" with past and present one-room schoolhouse teachers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book on a largely American phenomenon.......2006-11-13

The author has traveled the country photographing buildings, and the result is a book filled with beautifully clear, colorful pictures of schoolhouses, many of them architectural gems. The book traces the earliest American schoolhouses from their beginnings in the 1600's up through the 1940's. Every style is represented from simple log buildings through elaborate stone, brick, clapboard, and shingle sided relics.

There must be 100 or more buildings from 48 states featured in the included photos. Rocheleau has photographed interiors as well as exteriors and included histories and anecdotes related to many of the buildings. Some of the schools are in places that you would expect, featuring a classic schoolhouse design such as the Kibler Schoolhouse in Towamensing, Pennsylvania. Others are very unusual, such as an old Japanese schoolhouse in Hawaii. I've thought the one-room schoolhouse was a fascinating subject ever since I spent summers in Tennessee with my grandparents as a child and discovered that their next door neighbors were living in a converted one-room schoolhouse. I am surprised this book went out of print so fast. At least you can still find it used.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2006-07-06

A fun read and great photographs for someone interested in this disappearing landmark.

      A Heart for the Prairie

In 1979 her writing exploded onto a barely tapped Christian fiction market. Her simple stories, based on the lives of early prairie settlers, opened the door for fiction to an audience who had not yet discovered the joys and the "take-away value" of a well-told story. With sales of her novels now exceeding eleven million copies, she has surpassed the label of "bestselling" and has earned the title of "best loved."

In Janette Oke: A Heart for the Prairie, readers will discover that Janette fits none of the celebrity stereotypes. The daughter of a Canadian prairie farmer, the wife of a warmhearted pastor and educator, the mother of four grown children, and a grandmother who delights in her grandchildren she is an ordinary woman with an extraordinary talent.

Any reader of Janette Oke will be delighted with this "insider's view" of her life by her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan.

      4 out of 5 stars Simply Told.......2006-10-30

The story of Janette Oke's life told through snatches of stories. This book is packed with little stories and references to events in Janette's life. It reads almost as a family history or a remembrance book. Illustrated with a few pictures in the middle, it gives a good overview. The book is simply told, as most of her fictional books are. I only wish there had been more information about her as a writer.

      4 out of 5 stars An Inspiration.......2000-12-18

I was thoroughly inspired by reading this book. It seemed to me to be a little slow developing at the beginning, due to a fairly complex family history. Even this should be interesting to people who like history from the perspective of people who lived it. It is well organized, and provides a good description of the environment that nurtured this God-inspired writer. Janette Oke's life experiences are so easy to identify with, and her dependence on God so well portrayed that it is an inspiration to me. It is also fascinating to learn how one of my favorite writers arrived at her mission in life.
