5 out of 5 stars This book worked for my sons over 25 years ago.......2007-10-08

I don't remember much of the book as I had borrowed it from the public library after a neighbor told me about it over 25 years ago. I think the book had just come out and was in its earliest edition, sometime in the 70s, when I first used it. I do remember the book advising that boys were harder to train than girls and it was important to wait until the children were at least 2 years old before training as they might have problems with bedwetting later if trained too soon. It was also based on the rewards system - almost like training a dog. But it worked well for me with both sons without all the hassles I've witnessed in other children and their parents at that stage. The concept was grasped almost immediately by both sons and it was a very pleasurable experience for all of us. No problems whatsoever. Altho' several years later with the 2nd son, I never had to read or refer to the book again. In fact, I remember showing the book to the first son and he just "understood" from my explaining whatever pictures were there. One day they were in diapers, the next day they were in training pants never to return to diapers. Potty training was a breeze that lasted 2-3 days at the most, if that long. And it was so much FUN. Would highly recommend book.

5 out of 5 stars This works, but..........2007-10-08

All three of my boys have successfully toilet trained using the method described in this book. Yes, they were all trained at 2 1/2 years of age. Yes, they were all trained in less than a day. However, it was not easy. It took a lot of preparation and determination on my part. Many of my friends have successfully trained their children using this book, and many have tried and only succeeded in great frustration. Here are some of the things I have heard while troubleshooting this training method with frustrated parents:

"I used a few ideas from the book, but it seemed so involved that I skipped a lot. It didn't work."

"I did everything except to make her 'practice' when she had an accident. She hated that part, and it was just so time-consuming. It didn't work."

"Hey, I've been at this for 3 hours now, and it's not working. He just urinated all over the new carpet! What? Did I help him to practice? What's that? No, I haven't had time to read the book, I'm just looking at it as I go along. No, he didn't teach the doll to practice--we don't have a doll that wets. I'm improvising. What page is this practice thing on anyway? Oh, no, he just wet the floor again! And the new baby is screaming! I gotta go feed the little one now. This doesn't work!"

In this book, the authors clearly lay out a specific method designed to quickly toilet train young children. In addition, they discuss the importance of adhering to the method in order to achieve and maintain the desired results. Just owning the book will not help to train your child.
If you do read the book and don't agree with the method, or don't think you can carve out the time required, or are unable to find someone to care for your other children during the initial training period, just don't do it. If you read the book and decide that this is something that you can give adequate time and attention to, this works.

Read the book. Prepare well. Follow the training method. Be consistent in the days following. With preparation, patience, and determination, your child can be toilet trained in a day, too!

My family and I just returned from a short term work assignment overseas. When we were down to only two weeks left in our trip my wife was becoming very anxious. Our 3-year-old son was to enter preschool as soon as we returned and he was supposed to be potty trained. I had previously trained our daughter at 2-1/2 years using the book but wasn't sure my boy was ready. He showed no inclination for potty training and seemed perfectly happy to continue to wear diapers. Despite the reservations I went ahead and trained him according to the book. He seemed to enjoy it for the most part and thought it a bit of a game. He quickly grasped that the potty was were he was to do his job, but over the next few days he had random accidents during the day and wet his bed almost every night. With our daughter we had deviated from the book's recommendation and put pull-ups on her at night. This was a big mistake and prolonged her gaining control. With the boy we were determined to follow the book and a few middle-of-the-night ordeals ensued. These must have been as unpleasant for him as for us because after a few days he gained control. The BM's were another problem at first, for some reason he was afraid of these and would wait too long. We had to keep extra clothes and zip-lock bags with us wherever we went and were dreading the all-day/all-night airplane flight. We continued to do what the book recommended for accidents and by the time we left for home they were infrequent. We made it through the flight without incident, I think he actually got a kick out of using the airplane bathroom. Today, approximately a month since I trained him he has no accidents during the day or at night and it's been this way for some time.

I think the techniques of the book are effective because they are based on basic principles of human motivation, having fun, approval, mild disapproval (of actions not the child) and are also mindful of how we learn, i.e., precept upon precept based on verbal instructions, visual demonstrations, and the kinesthetics of practice and touch-based guidance. I also thought it was brilliant having the child potty train a doll-that-wets using the same procedure I was using on him! The book is not an easy read however, the technique evolves as the child learns each skill. I found the book somewhat tedious and had to take notes in order to keep the methods straight in my head. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because I thought they could have beefed up the section on BM's and nighttime accidents a bit more. Overall an excellent and effective book.

2 out of 5 stars Not in a day or less.......2007-09-20

This book has a lot of good ideas, however, it did not help with training my 3 year old. It requires you to load up your child on liquid so he/she has the urge to go, which is a good idea. However, checking to see if he/she has dry pants every 5 minutes isn't feasible. Your conversation with your child the whole time is supposed to be about going on the potty - however many hours it takes to get them trained. My son got bored with the conversation and didn't pay attention. And once the child gets the whole going on the potty thing, they aren't supposed to tell you when they have to go, they are just supposed to go. The book states that you should put the potty where ever they may be - outside, inside, in their room - so it is easily accessible to them. I would rather have my son come and get me when he has to go.

Needless to say, my son is still not potty trained and it's been 3 weeks since we've received this book.

5 out of 5 stars So glad this book is still available!.......2007-09-13

We used this method with our 22 month old daughter (in 1985) who was to enter a preschool that did not allow diapers. We worked all day Saturday and part of Sunday (probably took longer than a day because of her young age), and she attended preschool on Monday with no accidents. It's important to work through the pre-skills to make sure the child is "ready" to train, but if the child demonstrates the requisite skills, the program is highly successful with typically functioning young children. The process is intensive, but effective. I highly recommend it!

Not practical for general pediatrics or clinical hematology. More molecular and cellular than i thought it would be. For attendings, libraries, depts. Don't read unless you're going to do a presentation to a bunch of MD PhD's or something like that.

Book Description

In today’s society many young people have lost sight of the value of money and seem to believe that money really does "grow on trees." Part expose and part survival guide, Prodigal Sons and Material Girls addresses the nagging issue faced by many parents today – why do their children have such unrealistic expectations about money?

The book is divided into two comprehensive parts. Part I outlines the disturbing facts about America’s possession-crazed youth and the society that has distorted their views. You’ll be introduced to everything from the "three-headed monster"—a high-powered triumvirate of consumer products companies, media conglomerates, and advertising agencies that has tremendous influence over your children—to the distorted view of the American Dream as shaped by principles known as "The Teen Commandments." In learning what you’re up against you can teach financial responsibility from a position of strength.

In Part II, Dungan offers creative and convincing examples on how to leverage his highly successful "Share-Save-Spend" approach to money – critical elements for you to help your children break free from the materialism that has become ingrained in our society. Through insightful anecdotes and simple exercises, you will learn how to:

The "Share–Save–Spend" methodology will help your children establish healthy financial habits and will undoubtedly become their foundation for making a lifetime of responsible financial decisions.

Nathan Dungan is an innovative leader in the financial services industry. Over the past 15 years, he has been a top-performing financial advisor outside of Philadelphia, PA and most recently served as Vice President of Marketing for Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent Financial for Lutherans), a $57 billion member-owned financial services company with nearly 3 million members. Dungan is a frequent speaker and workshop leader and has been widely quoted on this subject in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and has appeared on CNN and PBS.

3 out of 5 stars A little dissappointing considering everyone else gave it 5 stars.......2005-11-15

While Nathan Dungan makes a good case that our culture is becoming more and more materialistic and there is more and more pressure on kids to conspicuously consume, I think that he spends too much time making the case. I bought the book precisely because I was concerned about instilling sound financial values in my own children, so I think he didn't need to spend well over half the book convincing me that it's something to be concerned about.

His share/save/spend philosophy is a good one from a 50,000 foot view, but I would have appreciated more concrete actionable plans. Don't get me wrong, there are specific suggestions and exercises (some of which I plan on impleenting), and discussion topics for dialogs with your kids, just not to the level I was expecting. There are also plenty of anecdotes about what other families have done, both good and bad, but I'm always a little uncomfortable with "advice by anecdote" vs. advice by research. There are plenty of citations, and I may be wrong, but it seemed to me that most of the citations regarded the impact of our materialistic society and the current state of affairs with young people getting into financial trouble, rather than studies regarding specific advice and how kids react to the peer pressure and financial environment. Also, a lot was said about peer pressure, and a lot was said about not caving in to it, but not a lot was said about helping kids cope with it in their daily lives.

In the end, I suppose this is a very difficult subject to write about. Every family situation is different, with different levels of income and affluence. Even if I can afford to buy certain things for my kids, where do I draw the line? The world is certainly different than the world I grew up in, but I think it's unrealistic to say "this was how it is when I grew up, so you should live in that world too.

5 out of 5 stars Teach your kids to Share, Spend and Save.......2004-04-16

Nathan Dungan's philosophy for teaching children to be responsible with money has its roots in a church program he designed at the behest of a friend. Dumbfounded that the kids in Sunday School hadn't thought about the possibility that money could be shared, he developed an approach to financial literacy focused on Sharing, Spending and Saving.

Many parents will identify with the profiles and stories of kids who ask for and are given too much. These same parents will likely be depressed by the evidence Dungan presents surrounding the influence of advertising, promotion and media on kids' inability to distinguish between wants and needs. Dungan offers solutions to these problems, providing parents with the ammunition to stop the madness and, not only to teach, but to lead by example.

Dungan acknowledges that its difficult for any parent to run counter to prevailing cultural imperatives to buy more, more, MORE. The tools he offers in this book should help make the job much easier for the committed parent.

5 out of 5 stars Prodigal Sons and Material Girls..........2003-09-06

I just finished reading the book, "Prodigal Sons and Material Girls: How Not to Be Your Child's ATM..." I was very impressed with Nathan Dugan's share-save-spend strategy, similar to what I was raised on--and eventually converted my husband to. Mr. Dugan's strategy combines spiritual and practical values into an easy to follow formula. Another aspect that I was impressed with was that Mr. Dugan also emphasizes understanding who you are and where you come from, in relation to your financial mindset--something that leads to our spending habits. I am trying to teach good financial habits to my three young children. When they come shopping with me we talk about the things that our family "needs" versus our "wants." I firmly believe in investing in oneself by saving money, instead of satisfying immediate wants. I appreciated Mr. Dugan's philosophy of grouping values and financial habits together, something I think people in financial straits don't realize. I've had extended family members approach me from time to time, asking for help in teaching them how to budget, etc. This book is a great reference that I will recommend to those who are struggling and to those who aren't, but need reaffirmation.

5 out of 5 stars Really hits the target for money and values with youth.......2003-08-16

The book opened my eyes to the some of the psychological manipulations that advertising and marketing companies use to influence children. The strategies Mr. Dungan suggests for instilling traditional values like donating and saving money as well as reasonable spending can help children learn how to be successful financially in adult life.
As a professional financial adviser and I see many financially successful people. In virtually every person that has accumulated substantial wealth I find several consistent attitudes and habits. These attitudes and habits for success are rarely found in today's youth. If this materialism doesn't change the future will not be as bright as we would want for them. I have been searching for resources that will help me teach young people in my community the value of money and how they can make choices which will provide long term happiness and security and at the same time live a life of joy and fulfillment today. Mr. Dungan's research and suggested strategies do just that.
This book has become the centerpiece of my community education effort.

5 out of 5 stars Sage & Insightful Advice for Rasing Responsible Children.......2003-06-15

A brilliant review of what we/society have done to "drug" our children in a spending stupor and what we need to do to stem this cultural tide and raise responsible & healthy children when it comes to managing money/spending.

Let me be the first to say I too am part of the problem; I've indulged my child and mis-taught my son with illusions that spending is happiness. Mr. Dugan describes how I/culture are misleading our children, if not selling them out, for the sake of marketing gain: business profit over our children's happiness. We're allowing business advertising to be the stewards of our children's spending/financial health. Mr. Dungan shows us how to take back that stewardship and how not to abdicate our child-rearing responsibility (about spending) and what to do to raise wise-spending young adults.

I have a few years to try to undo whatever harm I may have wrought. Of course, it's hard to rectify a bad habit once started, so I envy those of you who get to Nathan's book early. For those of us who can't, I advise we buy a copy for each child, tell them upfront what we intend to do & why, and then go about the task of raising spending responsible children, and in doing so, healthier, happier young people.

Thank you Mr. Dungan for writing such a sage, concise prescription for our self-inflicted woes: Share, Save, Spend.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" book for prospective dog owners.......2007-01-26

I had the distinct (and purely coincidental) pleasure of living in the same Florida Panhandle City as Nathan "Bert" Childs when I decided to get my first German Shepherd Dog. I wanted to "do it right" so I did what any responsible prospective dog owner would do...I turned to the "yellow pages" for a dog trainer. Bert and I had a long chat over the phone and I was completely sold on his methods of training by the end of our conversation. I hired Bert to train me...to train my dog. I was completely captivated by Bert and his way with my dog from the first minute. In fact, I was so completely impressed that I took it upon myself to study Bert...and his way with dogs. I took that knowledge and, through patience and practice, have since become a dog trainer myself. I am also among the priveleged few to still have a copy of Bert's first book, "Leader of the Pack." I lend it to all of my prospective clients to read, as I will with his new book, "Shaping the Wolf within your Dog." Please, if you want a happy, healthy and well adjusted dog then buy this book today!

5 out of 5 stars Shaping the Wolf Within Your Dog.......2005-06-15

Over 4000 dogs trained, over 40 years of dog training, 4 generations of training dogs... Nathan Childs, no doubt is the #1 authority in dog training in the United States.

My personal testimony starts with our 1st puppy, Behr, a Yorkshire Terrier. (Using Mr. Childs 1st book, which was written off the cuff in comparison to this one.) At 9 weeks old (3 weeks after bringing him home), Behr knew 72 commands. He also taught us some commands as well. Smile

Many spend many hours searching for the perfect car, house, mate...look no further for the perfect trainer, Nathan Childs. You too can not only have a wonderfully obedient dog, but also you will have a deep (pack) connection with your, now highly prized companion.

With as much knowledge, insight and experience as Nathan Childs has, he truly, should be called the "Wolf Whisperer."

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've seen for understanding your dog!.......2005-06-01

Excellent book. When I got a new pup, I bought several books including this one. I read them all, and this one made sense to me. My husband and I tried the techniques described in the book such as hiking combined with hide&seek to become the "alpha" of our pack. This worked great and was great fun for the pup as well as for my husband and me. The techniques described in the book worked so well on our pup that we tried them on our older (~8-9 year old) dog. They worked for her too! Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? I highly recommend this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pack Training Primer .......2005-05-14

A practical and common-sense approach to dog training, from the dog's point of view. If you only read one dog-training book, this is the one you should read. Written by a professional dog trainer who has trained over 3000 dogs over the last 40 years, it is both an enjoyable and educational read that teaches people how simple it is to live in harmony with a dog. Shaping the Wolf Within Your Dog is a study of wolves and dogs. With an understanding of how wolves (the ancestor of the dog) communicate and establish social order within the pack, we can project our alpha status to our dogs. As the author states: If your dog believes you are the pack leader, he will be motivated to be an obedient and well-mannered pack member. But if your dog believes he is the alpha, he will rule as he sees fit. Mr. Childs has offered an alternative means of training dogs, one that uses neither force or food rewards. He calls his method Pack Training. By communicating your love, will, and authority in your dog's language, you will not have to resort to bribery or force or clickers. With an understanding of wolf behavior and communication, you will understand what your dog's behavior is saying, and you will also know how to respond like an alpha wolf. You will understand why your dogs jumps on you, pulls you when he walks on lead, and doesn't come when you call; you will also know why dog-bite is more common today than any other time in history, and how you can protect your family from becoming a dog-bite statistic.

    Book Description

Communities throughout the United States were convulsed in the 1980s and early 1990s by accusations, often without a shred of serious evidence, that respectable men and women in their midst—many of them trusted preschool teachers—secretly gathered in far reaching conspiracies to rape and terrorize children. In this powerful book, Debbie Nathan and Mike Snedeker examine the forces fueling this blind panic.

    3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-05-17

I checked this out from the library, and will now buy a copy.
I remember a situation of claimed preschool ritual sex abuse.
There were confused statements of being dragged down into a
cave...etc. The staff and owners were found innocent, but left
    Arizona.
Funny thing, the building was razed for redevelopement a couple of
years ago. A weird cavelike cellar was discovered.
Take eveything you read with a grain of salt, but don't be so quick to disbelieve the strange and weird.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book but needs to be more indepth.......2004-12-03

Me being a child of the 80's I remember watching the TV movie about it....growing up in a Catholic School made it even worse.
Ritual Abuse is one of those things that unfortunatly does exist but it's not as precedent as one might think...A very very close and recent case of Ritual Abuse happened to one Rev. Sonath of the Order of Perdition...(Now gone thank god) the esteemed "Satanist" priest molested his 12 yr old daughter in ritual abuse. Google Search it if you think I am kidding. He was also in an episode on americas most wanted. The book itself is a good read with a lot of prevalent facts and case files but like I said...it's out there you just have to know where to look....no card carrying member of the CoS would likely admit to it...but a lot of the "denominations" currently held in the satanic church practice it without anyone knowing...

5 out of 5 stars The Real Persecutors.......2004-07-19

In the Margaret Kelly Michaels case, if you read the judicial evaluations carefully you can see clearly who the real perpetrators are: not Kelly at all, but the teams of prosecutors and "experts" who coerced the children into telling them exactly what they wanted to hear to whip up public hysteria. By the time the Superior and Supreme Court justices caught up with these misguided prosecuting "adults", Kelly's life as an actress and writer had been ruined, five years of her life had vanished into unjust imprisonment, and the lives of her students had been damaged for a very long time by those "adults" who forced them to dance to a prejudiced prosecution tune having nothing to do with the facts. These are the real tragedies, and they are far from over.

5 out of 5 stars On Reviews of Skeptical Books.......2004-03-25

Skeptical books? I mean books like this one that question our culture's holiest beliefs - in the continuing and ever-worsening oppression of victimized classes, the coming environmental doom etc. Most of the reviews tend to be positive; after all, interested persons have purchased the book or are shopping for the book. Their point of view is already formed. Then there are the other reviews - usually giving no stars, usually short and scabrous: "This book is part of a conspiracy to trivialize a very real problem. This book has been discredited. It has shoddy research etc." "Discredited" is a great word - applied not to shoddy research but to research that challenges our sacred beliefs.

To get more specific, negative reviewers of this book and its many cousins miss the point. Nathan and her co-authors are not excusing abuse or dismissing it as a possible occurrence. Nor are they denying that memories can be repressed. They are simply arguing two points:
    1. People are innocent until proven guilty. (Right?)
    and
    2. Memories recovered through hypnosis or by other means are not strong enough evidence to convict an accused "perp." As evidence, they are simply unreliable.

Lots of libertarians are on the internet and obviously are disposed to like books of this kind. Then there are others... the true believers, steeped in ideology and unconcerned about the facts in any specific case. Their only concern is with broader principles - "victims must be protected!"; "abuse is a terrible, growing problem!" These principles are fine, but they should not be brought to bear upon the process of determining guilt or innocence. This process should retain its clear focus on evidence and facts. That is the essence of Nathan's argument, as well as those of Ofshe, Terence Campbell, Willard Gaylin and Dorothy Rabinowitz.

4 out of 5 stars people do not understand.......2002-11-24

I saw the movie of the mcmartin trial and have read books on the case, it's unbelivable to me that some peolple still belive the abuse happened, when there's no physical evidence, and the children on all the videotapes never start by saying there was abuse, they say there never was abuse, in fact some children who were coerced and manipulated said they were abused when ray buckey wasn't even working there, I love children, i love working with them. Anybody who works with children could be accused of this stuff, I'm not saying sexual abuse never happens but you can't accuse people solely based on testimony without any evidence, if that's the case how would the people who rated this book being bad like it if I said they abused me, just my word no evidence, boy they sure would be singing a different tune, they'd cry about wanting a fair trial, every situation needs to be looked at seperately. I don't know whether Ray buckey abused those kids or not, but there's no eveidence, and he spent five years in jail and he's gotten physically beaten up in public, everybody else has gotten off scott free, gone on to better things yes even the kids who can't keep thier story straight about the abuse, who's the real victim here?? The american justice system sometimes can be brutal, and the media sure knows how to publice the bad stuff, what about the good stuff? BRUTAL!

5 out of 5 stars Nathan's Child by Anne McAllister (Mills & Boon).......2006-05-17

Sixth book in Anne McAllister's New York! New York! series ... all six books in this series are not to be missed! I recommend reading them in order, although each can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel as well. Make room on your keeper shelf for the entire series: Finn's Twins, Fletcher's Baby, Gibson's Girl, Rhys's Redemption, The Inconvenient Bride, and Nathan's Child. This book tells the story of Nathan Wolfe and Carin Campbell, whose one night stand was first revealed in The Inconvenient Bride ...

Description from the book back cover:

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT ... Only one woman in the world had ever turned Nathan Wolfe's head. It just so happened that Carin Campbell had been off-limits, engaged to marry his brother. And the one single night they'd spent together was a huge mistake. It changed nothing, Nathan had assured himself for years ... But now his brother Dominic and his sister-in-law Sierra have come back from Pelican Cay with news - news that proves what Nathan has thought isn't true. Nathan is a father. Why did Carin never tell him that they had a child?

    5 out of 5 stars Nathan's Child.......2005-09-14

    Back cover reads:
He's back to claim his child...and his bride!
When Nathan Wolfe discovers that he's a father, he decides that marriage is the only way to mend the past.
Carin Campbell had good reasons for keeping Nathan's child a secret. But now he's demanding that they marry. Carin knows he's proposed out of duty, not love. Besides, he isn't the type to settle down.
That was then, Nathan says. Now he's determined to prove her wrong...

4 out of 5 stars sexy story with intricately beautiful emotion.......2003-06-16

My mother-in-law says Harlequin Romances are so easy. They are like a quickie before lunchtime she informs me. And I always was inclined to believe her, never having indulged myself. Until now.

Curled up in my reading chair, having put my daughter to sleep, I felt ready to enjoy a sweet romance with Anne McAllister's July release, "Nathan's Child." Unprepared and definitely uninformed, I began a starkly realistic story of a single mother's struggle to include the long absent father of her child. As the characterization of Carin Campbell blossomed, McAllister deftly handled the reactions of Nathan Wolfe and Lacey Campbell as their own relationship develops. The depth of this book is impressive with its intuitive revelations and ability to make you care about the individuals.

Nathan Wolfe, thirteen years missing, from Carin Campbell's now in control life, suddenly appears wanting to be a part of his daughter's life. Lacey Campbell couldn't be more pleased. Carin on the other hand, has decided duty be hanged and Nathan with it. As Carin consciously begins mending the relationship between Nathan and Lacey, she and Nathan find family ties are not always the ones that bind. And that love can be the strongest bond of all.

Overall, "Nathan's Child" was well worth the wait for those who have been begging for completion of the "Wolfe Brothers' Trilogy." Check out the the Inconvenient Bride and Rhys' Redemption for the other Wolfe Brother's stories.

McAllister deserves high kudos for making this story so likable and in a short amount of time. She reels you in quickly and keeps her story believable the entire way through this book. It's hard to believe she manages it with so little time and with one of the oldest plots of all time. It's a remarkable talent!

You may resent the quickie remark, but if you are looking for a sexy but touching story, "Nathan's Child" delivers. Emotionally deep and stirring, it deserves all your attention (whether you read it before lunch or not)!

        Book Description

If the sewing machine was the greatest of Walter Hunt's inventions, close behind were the safety pin and the fountain pen. In 1829 he patented a knife sharpener still manufactured and widely used today. Among his hundreds of inventions, many still in use, are a restaurant steam table, a tree-felling saw, a ship's ice-breaker, inkstands, a rifle, a cartridge, a shoe heel, and a ceiling-walking circus device. He earned, however, only a meager living, instead devoting his life to others.
