Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle's mother has disappeared. While tracing her steps on a car trip from Ohio to Idaho with her grandparents, Salamanca tells a story to pass the time about a friend named Phoebe Winterbottom whose mother vanished and who received secret messages after her disappearance. One of them read, "Don't judge a man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins." Despite her father's warning that she is "fishing in the air," Salamanca hopes to bring her home. By drawing strength from her Native American ancestry, she is able to face the truth about her mother. Walk Two Moons won the 1995 Newbery Medal.
Book Description
"How about a story? Spin us a yarn."
Instantly, Phoebe Winterbottom came to mind. "I could tell you an extensively strange story," I warned.
"Oh, good!" Gram said. "Delicious!"
And that is how I happened to tell them about Phoebe, her disappearing mother, and the lunatic.
As Sal entertains her grandparents with Phoebe's outrageous story, her own story begins to unfold--the story of a thirteen-year-old girl whose only wish is to be reunited with her missing mother.
In her own award-winning style, Sharon Creech intricately weaves together two tales, one funny, one bittersweet, to create a heartwarming, compelling, and utterly moving story of love, loss, and the complexity of human emotion.

Very thoughtful twisted.......2007-09-05
Walk 2 moons was a very thoughtful book adding details everywhere. and the book misleads you in a good way which i not going to give away how and why. its also twisted but in a good way as well. for example you think one thing and you are so sure its true but then at the end it hits you "wait! thats not right." and then BAM the next sentence tells all. and it just surprises you. I would recommend this book to and boy or girl grades 3-7.
you are never 2 young or old to read this book.
A review.......2007-08-11
My name is Laura and I go to JMS. I am writing this review for my English pre ap course. I liked this book because it was well written and keep my attention from begining to end. It had a little of everything happy parts, and sad parts. Its a real tear jerker. It is a awesome book and I would recommend it for anyone no matter what age.
My opinions on Walk Two Moons.......2007-08-01
My name is Karina and this review is for my pre-ap summer project for Jarman Middle School.I thought this book was great.I really liked the characters. And the author did a great job on creating a mental picture.I would definitely recommend this book for people my own age.The characters are very likeable. And almost everyone is able to relate to losing someone dear to them. And those are some of my wonderful opinions on this great book.
Teen finds her way.......2007-06-10
After getting used to the style of writing, I truly enjoyed this book. The organization was scattered using flashbacks and present story telling, but kept the pace pretty quick. It was interesting to see where the Phoebe storyline was going and how it all tied together in the end. I don't want to give anything away, but I think Sam's way of dealing with situation will help the young reader to deal with theirs.
Jordyn's Reveiw.......2007-05-25
There once lived a girl named Salamanca Tree Hiddle. Her nickname was Sal, a thirteen year old girl that once lived with her mother and father on a farm in Kentucky.
One morning Sal woke up to find that her mother had disappeared. She was very sad to what could have happened to her. Sal's dad didn't know where she had gone either. They were both very frightened at the thought of where she could have went. They thought for a little bit where she may have gone. They assumed that she went to Lewiston for some apparent reason. They still weren't positive though. Her dad drove her three hundred miles to Ohio.
Sal stayed in the car while her dad visited. She saw a face pressed up against the window next door. Sal could tell it looked like an afraid girl. She then noticed it was the face of Phoebe Winterbottom, a girl that would become Sal's friend.
Later that day Sal's grandparents came up with the idea to drive from Kentucky (where they lived) to Ohio so they could pick up Sal and drive two thousand miles to Lewiston for a nice get away. While on their way to Lewiston Sal told them some of Phoebe's stories and stories of her own. For instance, Phoebe's mom also disappeared, and she received letters saying different things. Phoebe and Sal had many things in common. One thing that they always wondered was will they ever find their moms? I personally think Walk Two Moons is a great book, but it is also very sad in parts. I would recommend this book to anyone, boy or girl.

Book Description
Acclaimed author Jill Marie Landis has gifted readers with award-winning love stories that express the most intimate longings of the human heart. With unique insight and irresistible wit, she breathes vivid life into her characters while depicting superb settings of stunning beauty and realism. Now, in her long-awaited hardcover debut, Jill Marie Landis tells the tender tale of a woman without choices who risks everything for one last chance at happiness.
RANCHER SEEKING WIFE. For Kate Whittington, the modest words of a newspaper ad are the answer to her desperate prayers. Daughter of a dockside harlot and raised in a bleak orphanage, she has no prospects in the unforgiving Maine village of her birth. Correspondence from the lonely Texas widower looking for a mail-order bride sparks tempting dreams of a house, a family, and a future in a land filled with possibilities.
Kate arrives at the magnificent Lone Star Ranch eager to meet her new husband. Instead she is greeted by the news that Reed Benton has been wounded during a raid on a Comanche village and has returned with a prisoner--a wild-looking young boy who may be his long lost son. Even more shattering, however, is the fact that Reed has never heard of Kate, never wrote the searing letters that charmed her heart.
Reed Benton doesn't want a wife. But he does need someone to look after the boy--a bitter reminder of a past ravaged by lies and betrayal. It will take a miracle to heal these two damaged souls . . . or the faith of one woman with nothing left to lose but her heart.
Summer Moon is a deeply moving story of broken promises and new beginnings, crafted by a true master of romantic fiction.
From the Hardcover edition.

Maybe it's just me, but . . . .......2006-09-04
What a yawn. Plot was predictable, characters mundane, dialogue and writing style adequate but not interesting. I wasn't in love with the hero, heroine, or the kid, but they were okay. The sex was okay, and sort of even married sex, actually. I considered abandoning the book, but it really wasn't annoyingly flawed, so actually I'd put it at 2 1/2 stars if I could. I must choose between 2 and 3, though, and since I'm feeling sort of glass half empty tonight, I'm going with 2.
I rate books as follows:
***** Fun and meaningful book, or changed/challenged me in a positive way.
****Really fun or meaningful; well worth the time.
***Pleasantly skimmed the surface; not memorable.
**Plodded through.
*Abandoned; very flawed.
Jill Marie Landis is a wonderful author.......2004-09-30
I found the book to be absolutely wonderful. How Kate struggled to get what she really deserved in life and almost lost it. How she kept true to herself when it came to the preacher. The little boy just broke my heart. How he became the commanche then at the end finally started excepting his life as a white boy. How touching. Reed struggled with his feeling and finally decided that he couldn't be without Kate. I was thinking it was about time he woke up. :) I was never a book reader but thought I'd give it a whirl. By chance I purchased Magnolia Creek and read it in no time. I got this one next. I have already finished it as well. I never knew I could enjoy reading so much. I haven't found an author that would just want me to keep reading. Thank you Jill for being such a spectacular author.
couldn't put it down.......2004-08-19
I traditionally read books by Grisham and Koontz but was drawn to this book while browsing the local bookstore. I usually do not read "romance" novels however once I began this I had a hard time finding a place to stop and put it down and finished it in a mere 3 days. I liked the historican aspect of the book and the fact that the author told the story through a variety of perspectives, unlike most books I read. When i finished reading I was disappointed that I would no longer be reading about these interesting charachters. I would be willing to read other books by the same author after experiencing this story.
Not what i first thought........2003-10-11
This was my first book by this author and I am not sure what to think. There are parts that I really really liked, and parts that I didn't. I would have liked to see more at the end. It was a good, heart warming read, but not a Stash Keeper.
Another Great Landis Novel.......2003-07-09
Summer Moon is the story of Kate Wittington, a woman who at the age of nine was dropped off at an orphanage by her prostitute mother. When Kate is twenty-nine the orphanage closes and she must decide what she's to do with her life. She answers an ad in the newspaper for a woman to be a mail-order bride. She takes a chance and answers the ad and is the lucky woman who is chosen to be the wife of Reed Benton. When she arrives in Texas she finds out the shocking truth. She married Reed Benton by proxy but he knows nothing of their marriage. It seems they were both tricked by Reed's father, Reed Benton Sr., a devious and scheming man who devised a plan to get his son back home to the Lone Star Ranch. When Reed Jr. returns to the ranch, wounded, and with his son who has been raised by the Commanche for the past six years he finds out he's married to Kate. Since he's wounded and can't care for his son he hires Kate on as his housekeeper and caregiver to his son Daniel.
This book was very entertaining and very easy to read. The characters were very life-like and well developed. Every character in the book has a purpose and they serve their purpose well. Ms. Landis seems to have thought out her character before she began writing. Even the secondary characters are well rounded. They all add to the story in their own way.
Summer Moon moves along at a steady pace. Again, the storyline seems to have been well thought out before the book was started. The author clearly had every scene planned out and this makes the book very enjoyable to read. The book doesn't seem choppy or hurriedly put together. It just seems like a well planned book about everyday characters on the Texas frontier.
Summer Moon is an excellent read. I was able to finish this book in just two days. I couldn't put this book down. I wanted to find out what was going to happen but at the end didn't want the book to end. I felt like I personally knew the characters and could feel their emotions. Summer Moon is a great book and will make a great addition to any romance lover's or Western romance lover's library.

Customer Reviews:
Stunning Conclusion to an Acclaimed Series.......2002-06-15
SUMMER MOON concludes the SEASONS OF THE MOON series, which was originally published as the THIRTEEN MOONS series in the 1960's, and thirty years later in beautiful harcover editions with new illustrations. For the first time ever, the books are available in paperback, condensed from thirteen separate books to four volumes each containing three stories. Critically acclaimed naturalist and author Jean Craighead George writes with the same detailed and intriguing prose as was found in her Newbery Medal- winning classic JULIE OF THE WOLVES and MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. Her love for animals shines through in these detailed accounts of North American species whose lives revolve around the seasonal changes of the moon. In SUMMER MOON we first meet a bumbling family of fox pups, who are learning from their parents how to become good hunters. The pups' lessons are filled with humor and insight into fox life. We see them develop from playful youngsters to elegant adolescents, while at the same time learning about the habitat of their sparkling Pennsylvania home, filled with singing birds and flowers bursting into June bloom. Next, we are taken from the Northeast to the scorching Sonoran desert of Arizona, where a lost peccary piglet wanders under towering cacti and over sizzling earth, trying to find his close-knit family. A thunderstorm is rolling ominously toward the piglet, and he, like the other animals of the desert, must prepare for the sudden, short-lived, and violent torrents that are approaching. The Arizona desert is depicted so well, you can practically feel the heat waves, and you learn that pigs, which may seem unlikely heroes, are affectionate family members and intelligent, interesting creatures. Finally, the moon of August is hanging above a herd of elk making their way down a rocky slope in Washington state, unaware that they are being watched by the fiery eyes of a lone mountain lion. The predator stalks quietly through the hemlock forests until he happens upon a couple of orphaned young lions and abandons his solitary life. The setting of the great mountain peaks is dramatic and eerie. You may learn a new respect for this beautiful and misunderstood predator. SUMMER MOON, like the other books in the series, is a satisfying read that will leave you with a graphic picture of the featured environments and have you carrying fresh and accurate knowledge of wildlife. Check out the other books in the series as well as Ms. George's other stunning nature stories. You may want to listen to Chris Kubie's charming accompanying CD MUSIC OF THE THIRTEEN MOONS as you read.

From the Bellybutton of the Moon is renowned poet Francisco X. Alarcon's fresh collection of 22 bilingual poems inspired by his touching recollections of childhood summers in Mexico.
With a poet's magical vision, Alarcon takes us back to his childhood when he traveled with his family to Mexico to visit his grandma and other relatives. We travel with him in the family station wagon, across the misty mountain range to the little town of Atoyac. There, in the beloved town of his ancestors, we hear his grandma's stories, sample Auntie Reginalda's tasty breakfasts, learn about the keys to the universe, and take playful dips in the warm sea.
The lighthearted illustrations of Maya Christina Gonzalez perfectly capture the spirit of a summer in Alarcon's Mexico where "colors are more colorful, tastes are tastier, and even time seems to slow down."
Customer Reviews:
An exuberant bilingual celebration of life.......2001-01-07
"From the Bellybutton of the Moon and Other Summer Poems" is an excellent collaboration between two artists: poet Francisco X. Alarcon and illustrator Maya Christina Gonzalez. Although marketed as a children's book, this bilingual collection should appeal to readers of all ages.
Each of Alarcon's poems is presented both in English and Spanish versions, making this book an added bonus for English speakers who are learning Spanish (or the other way around). The poetry in this book is a populist literature in the tradition of Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda, and some of Alarcon's whimsical reflections on the natural world also reminded me of Emily Dickinson. And while being part of a great tradition, Alarcon has his own strong poetic voice which stands apart.
Alarcon is a United States poet, and, as he explains in the afterword (which also appears in both English and Spanish), these poems were inspired by childhood trips to visit his rural relatives in Mexico. This book is thus a multicultural celebration of family, of ethnic roots, of childhood memories, and of the beauty of nature. Alarcon writes of being taught the alphabet by his grandfather, of walking barefoot on the grass, of befriending a cow name Mariposa ("butterfly" in Spanish), and of other delightful things.
Gonzalez' illustrations, which grace every page, perfectly complement Alarcon's celebratory verses. Bursting with color and energy, Gonzalez' work is a stunning blend of realistic and fantastic images. Her best illustrations are rich in details that invite the eye to linger in pleasure.
In the poem "We Are Trees," Alarcon compares human beings to trees, and notes that while "our roots / connect," our branches also "reach out / to other branches." And this philosophy seems to be at the heart of Alarcon's work. While celebrating a particular family and culture, "From the Bellybutton of the Moon" also explores universal ideas which are relevant to all families and all cultures. And thus should this book be enjoyed by children--and adults--of all cultures.

This is a must-have reference book for every kitchen witch's library! I'm looking forward to more works from this author.
Book Description
Who needs a backyard when there are brownstone steps, double dutch, and freeze tag beneath the sizzling summer sun? The jingling bell of the ice cream truck mingles with laughter and sidewalk rhymes. Frosty lemonade from the corner store and tight cornrows beat the heat with style. There's nothing like summer in the city with friends, family, and a child's imagination for company.
Ruth Forman offers a poetic testament to childhood, language, and play, and Cbabi Bayoc's richly hued paintings bring the streets of South Philadelphia to vivid life.
Customer Reviews:
"Look Who's Here Punchinella Punchinella!".......2007-05-01
Ruth Forman's words are an Alvin Ailey for the tongue. We prance and pirouette through the South Philly Summer along with Forman and sway in the rhythm of Bayoc's illustrations. Forman recalls not on the tastes and smells, but the rhymes the define a era, "look who's here punchinella punchinella! look who's here punchinella inna zoo!" That line alone sparked a circle dance in the kitchen and a rousing game of Punchinella.
This is a great book and one that parents will enjoy reading and children will enjoy listening to over and over again.
A gorgeous story for all ages .......2007-04-09
"We got black magic n brownstone steps/when the sun go down" and the readers of this gorgeous book "got black magic" in living color. Ruth Forman's poems are always brushstrokes of hope, fascination and unadulterated joy. Thanks to illustrator Cbabi Bayoc, the imprint of her language lives even more indelibly and colorfully on the pages of "young cornrows callin out the moon."
Ruth is "cool after lemonade n black eye peas" as she skillfully glides us through grade school summers and we are all "full after ham hocks n hot pepper greens" when we're done hanging out in South Philly with her.
I cheerfully recommend this book for children of all ages. My 2-year-old niece saw her own face in the images on these pages while her 79-year-old grandmother read the story...lilt in her voice. And that is "black magic."

A VERY SEXY FUNNY AND EXCITING NOVEL.......2005-10-10
Who says that British girls are demure and reserved ? Not if there is any truth in Dick Rogers' sizzling story set in a college summer school during the swinging nineteen sixties. There are any number of gorgeous dollybirds who will do anything - and I do mean anything - to secure a ticket for pop idol Shane Hammond's concert. In this comptetion of sensual skills every contest is a winner! This is a really enjoyable erotic tale that doesn't take itself too seriously as it details with great gusto a wide range of sexual situations. Highly recommended.
