5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on eskimo life.......1998-12-09

I read this book many years ago as a child on a recommendation from my father. He gave me his copy of the book before he died. The book's details on Inuit life and how it is affected by the inclusion of the sailors makes for great reading. This should be required reading in school and for any Sociology course.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating juxtaposition of European and Eskimo culture........1998-07-08

James Houston, a noted glass designer (for Steuben) lived among the Eskimos as a civil servant for the Canadian government. He helped them organize coops for the distribution of their art. This book is about the sailors who are taken in by Eskimos after their ship sinks. It vividly contrasts the highly organized and friendly Eskimo society with the unruly and often cruel code of the European seafarer. Great reading from an author who knows! Also recommend his Spiritwrestler.

Book Description

One day an unruly curl pops out of Harriet's nice neat braid--a wriggly, wavy, horrible curl. "It looks weird," taunts her brother. WHEN HARRIET'S SISTER offers to fix the rebellious curl, the three of them launch into a series of outrageous, hair-raising schemes to tame Harriet's wayward ringlet. Despite their best efforts, though, two... three... four... and still more curls break loose. Soon the yard and the house are a wreck, poor Harriet is exhausted, and her head is covered in curls. Dawn Stewart's rollicking, boisterous tale, vividly brought to life by Michael White's brilliant and quirky illustrations, will entertain young readers while helping them to see that the root of our problems is sometimes all in the way we look at them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Harriet's Hair brings Smiles.......2001-01-03

An absolutly great book! The text is lyrical making it easy to read over and over again. The illustrations are colorful and fun. With each reading, your child (and you) will notice more fantastic details. The antics are zany, but Harriet's feelings are real and ones we can all relate to. This book will quickly become a family favorite!

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible Children's Story!.......2000-07-19

A delightful story, complete with detail-rich, amazingly fun illustrations, makes this book a sure hit with children, and their parents. I can't wait for more releases from Ms. Stewart!

5 out of 5 stars Hair-larous Locks.......2000-05-16

Every child with hair that won't behave or who has siblings that are too helpful, will delight in reading the trials put upon Harriet by her brother and sister all because of a wayward curl! The vocabulary is age appropriate and the illustrations are delightful.

5 out of 5 stars Harriet's a Hoot!.......2000-04-19

Kindergarten to fifth graders enjoyed this wild tale. I am an elementary school librarian and my students loved this story and its zany illustrations. They couldn't wait to see what Harriet's creative siblings had in store for her on every page. They also loved watching the dog's and cat's antics throughout the book. As we say in Texas..."This book is a hoot!"

5 out of 5 stars The Curl and the Cure by Rose Gotsis.......2000-04-11

Harriet's Horrible Hair Day is not only for the young girl whose hair won't behave, it's for the young boy who can't get that unruly cowlick to stay down. When Harriet's cinnamon-colored curl pops out of her braid, her brother is quick to tell her she looks weird. This single remark sets into motion a series of remedies that her siblings apply. Their antics are somewhat reminiscent of Dr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat". Creative, wild, and crazy, the cure is worse than the curl. As illustrated in the following text, Harriet's siblings are determined: "Harriet's sister plopped a colandar on Harriet's head, and her brother pulled the curls through the holes." Ms. Stewart's amusingly phonetic text will please all children, and Michael P. White's appropiate illustrations will catch their eyes. Without a doubt, this is a book a child will clutch close to his or her chest. No wonder it has sold out at our local bookstore.

5 out of 5 stars My First Romance.......2003-08-17

I found this book years ago at a used book store, and bought it because of the picture on the cover. I had no idea what it was going to be about, but the picture was so beautiful that I bought it anyway. This was the very first historical romance I had ever owned and it sparked an interest in historical romances that has lasted over 15 years. This book made me laugh and cry, but I could not put it down! The character's were far from perfect, which only made the story more interesting. I highly recommend this book to any true historical romance reader.

I wish there was more information about Mary's books. I have all of her "Roses" series, and even they were extremely diffult to come by, but I would like to know more about some of her other work...

5 out of 5 stars It's more than a love story; it was wonderful!.......1999-01-17

Pershall does a wonderful job in keeping with historical facts, while writing one terrific love story. Her two main characters are so likeable. This book makes you feel as if your right there in the story. I could not put the book down, I was sorry to see it end.

With stories ranging from historical to the contemporary, readers will be drawn in immediately. So step inside the pages of this book to discover how BLUE MOON MAGIC works....

"Belle of the Blue Moon Ball" by Dawn Thompson opens the anthology with a delightful tale of how the King of the Faeries, Oberon, and Puck unite Lady Arabella Gilmartin with the Earl of Everton, Nigel. Puck and Oberon's exploits are priceless and readers will relish their antics in this historical story as Puck manages to enchant the bowl of claret, with all the party members drinking it except the two they are aiming for!

Erin E.M. Hatton's "Where the Sea Meets the Skye" is a haunting contemporary tale of a woman searching for her dream. After her job prospects as a marine biologist fail, Celine Terreau travels to Scotland where she encounters the mysterious Ronan Morrison who has a "sea-cret" of his own! Ms. Hatton does a spectacular job at drawing the reader into the emotions of the characters and creating an aura of mystery.

"Angels in the Moonlight" by Diane Davis White focuses on the humorous antics of angels Pricilla and Sadie the Shady Angel, as they unite vocalist Olivia Langston and horn player Nathan Bridges. Pricilla and Sadie steal the show as their light-hearted bickering will keep readers laughing.

"Under the Pale Moonlight" by Katherine Smith is the sweet story of Lady Alicia McCray and Arthur Cameron. Arthur believes himself unfit for Alicia due to a disability that keeps him from dancing. Ms. Smith uses great sensitivity in addressing Arthur's disability and weaves an endearing tale that will warm readers' hearts.

"Ember's Desire" by Meagan Hatfield is the story of hopeless witch Ember Galenorn who casts a spell for love and rescues Balder, the son of Odin. Balder has been entrapped in the underworld and now he and Ember must defeat Loki to fulfill their destiny. This magical tale has all the passion and drama of an excellent fantasy.

Aysel Arwen's "Spellbound" is the sensual tale of Emma MacPherson and Alexander Grant. Emma is lonely and searching for her mother's wedding ring when she encounters and ultimately rescues the bespelled Highlander from the Lady of the Loch. Ms. Arwen has written one of the best opening lines ever to a story and the reader will be immediately "Spellbound" by this enchanting story.

M.J. Saeger's "Enchantment By the Sea" is the deeply emotional tale of journalist Clara Barnes and resort owner Grayson Everett. Clara is investigating Gray's resort but will a foolish comment from her boss and Gray's college friend, Benny, ruin their chance for love? Readers will empathize with Clara's dilemma and feel her anger at Benny in a gut-wrenching story of second chances.

"Suddenly You" by Jaquelin Lorin is a fantastic time-travel in which art restorer Celine Chauvin is catapulted back to the 1870s where she meets her Mr. Gorgeous from the painting, Rhys Butler. Ms. Lorin does a fabulous job at capturing the historical flavor of the 1870s as well as Celine's reaction to her experience. The red dress is an excellent touch and demonstrates the author's attention to detail.

Lee Roland's "Blue Moon and the Warrior" is the endearing tale of teacher Allison McClure and Richard Fallon who meet in a dreamy world as Cailin and Cahir. Allison is an admirable figure as she chases her dream of love while sacrificing in her career.

"Midsummer Magic" by Kristi Ahlers shows the full power of BLUE MOON MAGIC as Meredith is rescued from a marriage to the abusive Lord Langdon by Laird Kieran Fraser. Readers will appreciate Meredith's reticence due to her kidnapping by Kieran while cheering Kieran's efforts to woo her.

Billie Warren Chai's "Secret of the Blue Moon" is a heart-wrenching story of second chances for Dr. Zoey Blackstone and Jake Runningbear. Prejudices separated them when they were younger but now BLUE MOON MAGIC will bring them back together. This fascinating tale of love overcoming prejudices is both gut-wrenching and instructional as the reader is thrilled with Zoey for overcoming such hardships, including her horrific treatment at the hands of ignorance.

Kimberly Ivey's "The Darkness and the Dreams" focuses on Paloma Delatorre's dedication to volunteering at a local hospital after the tragic death of her fiancé, Robert. She initially suspects her neighbor, Grandma Bikini, has finally lost her mind when she tells Paloma that Robert's soul is now in the body of comatose patient, David Hopkins. What ensues is an inspiring tale of how love can transcend all barriers, including death. Grandma Bikini is truly a hoot as well and will leave readers hoping for another glimpse of her!

"The Healer" by Leanne Burroughs is a vivid historical tale revolving around an auld healer, Agnes, who is reluctantly dragged to the Drummond castle to tend to the laird's English captive, Tory, who has been poisoned. In the process, an attraction develops between Agnes and Warrick, the laird's warrior. This riveting story is a fascinating portrait that demonstrates that love can flourish at any age in any time.

Keelia Greer's "In the Space of a Heartbeat" is a futuristic vampire story of soulmates Melania Knight and Trevor Kerrin. Melania is an agent sent to protect Trevor as his work is invaluable to the galaxy and must be allowed to continue. The action is fast paced and readers will want to read more about Melania as she is not like other vampires!

The anthology concludes with Deborah MacGillivray's mesmerizing tale, "The Rider in the Storm". Ciera MacIain has grieved for 7 years over the death of her fiancé, Derek. At the exact spot of his death and on the anniversary of the fatal accident, she meets Roarke Devlin who knows things only Derek would know. This haunting tale will send shivers down your spine and leave tears in your eyes as Ms. MacGillivray breathes life into the characters.

BLUE MOON MAGIC is an anthology that offers a bit of magic for everyone. These fascinating and compelling tales of wishes fulfilled on a blue moon will convince even the hardest of hearts about the power of love. Kudos to all of the authors involved as this is one anthology in which every single story delivers a powerful punch!

Spellbound - Aysel Arwen - Emma MacPherson had felt lost and alone for a long time; more so now that her parents had died. Losing her mothers ring would have been devastating which was why she was searching the shores of Loch Ness in the middle of the night to find it. Enchantment By the Sea - M. J. Sager - Clara Barnes had heard all the big come-ons before and been burnt badly. Would this be another mistake or the heartfelt wish of a lifetime. Oooh so very sensual!

Suddenly You - Jaquelin Lorin -- When art restorer Celine Chauvin made a wish of knowing `who' the gorgeous man in the portrait she'd been restoring was, she had no idea that wish would land her 130 years in the past and face to face with Mr. Gorgeous himself. Luscious time-travel, delicious Mr. Gorgeous!

Blue Moon and the Warrior - Lee Roland - Allison was planning a vacation alone in the desert of Utah to gain some perspective and get over the end of a two-year relationship, what she experienced was a dream night filled with passion and romance or was it really a dream? She who continually sought perfection found in the end that one elusive feeling that would be real. - Sensual, steamy and magical.

Midsummer Magic - Kristi Ahlers - Setting Cumbria, England, 1557 - Meredith was restless after finding out she'd been betrothed. With nothing to lose she made a wish upon the blue moon for true love to find her. Kieran Fraser was out stealing horses when he came upon the beauty who then stole his heart. He'd then do what any self respecting Scot would do, he'd kidnap and make her his own lady wife. - Sweetly sensual, lovely.

Secret of the Blue Moon - Billie Waren Chai - Zoey Blackstone had left Jake Runningbear twelve years before after his mother had run her out of town. Now she was back, not as white trash but as a full fledged ER doctor. Jake never knew why she left and blamed her all those years for breaking his heart, but now under the magic of the `blue moon' he would discover the truth and they'd recapture a love that never died. - Sensational, fast moving totally engrossing.

The Darkness and the Dreams - Kimberly Ivey - Unable to write since her fiancé Robert's death on the eve of their wedding two years before.Paloma Delatorre filled her days with volunteer work at the hospital. The Healer - Leanne Burroughs - Old Agnes was aggravated as the big lummox known as Warwick hauled her off to the castle Drummond. She remained by herself all these years never wanting to feel again, yet this auld warrior was intent on making her feel things she swore she'd never feel again. Would a wish on the `blue moon' melt the bitterness of Agnes' heart allow old Warwick to finally find the other half of his heart. - Wonderful - this one made the tears run down my face with joy.

In the Space of a Heartbeat - Keelia Greer - Earth 5046 -- Melania Knight was sent by the CGIA to protect the wealthy, available and utterly divine scientist Trevor Kerrin, but she had always felt a pull towards him and tried to keep this meeting strictly business. Unfortunately, Trevor had other things on his mind and one of them was finally claiming his soulmate - Melania. - Features intergalactic sexy vampires playing with super cool weapons and toys - so yummy!

Rider in the Storm - DeborahAnne MacGillivray - Ciara MacIain had stopped living seven years ago when her beloved fiancé Derek had died in an automobile accident. On the anniversary of his death she found herself traveling down the same road at the same time of that long ago fateful night and like déjà vu spotted another read sports car plunged off the side of the road. Roarke Fraser Devlin, the tall dark handsome driver wasn't Derek but yet there was something very familiar about him....could her earlier wish on the `blue moon' that night have something to do with this feeling of recognition that ignited her very soul? Would her heart recognize his? -- Awesome imagery, heart tugging intensity - beautiful story, simply beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars It's An Amazing Book!.......2006-06-27

"Belle of the Blue Moon Ball" by Dawn Thompson--Lady Arabella Gilmartin is in need of a husband, or she will have to consider herself on the shelf at nineteen, after her third season no less! The Earl of Everton is home after a long service to king and country and though he detests formal gatherings, he is in need of settling down. Indeed, he is in want of a wife! When it appears all else is trying to keep them apart, the mischievous nature spirit, Puck, and the king of the faeries, Oberon, will make sure the young lovers unite.--A witty romp of a read full of mishaps and well-meaning blunders on the part of Puck. Author Thompson, brilliant writer of The Waterlord and The Ravencliffe Bride, brings readers another tale of love found under the influence of magic's fae touch.

"Where Sea Meets Sky" by Erin E. M. Hatton--Celine mourns a life she thought would be perfect. With the hope of a brilliant career and a true lasting love dashed, she flies to Scotland to study the seals native to the Isle of Skye. There she meets the mysterious Ronan, a stranger whom she feels more for than anyone she's ever known. When he tells her magical tales of a mythical race, she is enraptured by the possibilities she hears in his alluring voice. When she learns of Ronan's true nature, will she have the strength to set him free?--Author Hatton pens a fascinating tale of mythical love that dares to breach the barriers of reality. A haunting accomplishment of love story!

"Angels in the Moonlight" by Diane Davis White--Sadie the Shady Angel is back! She and her prissy instructor are back to ensure musicians Nathan and Olivia realize the full potential of their relationship. Nathan can barely resist the sensual enchantment his band's lead singer holds over him, but he's been burned before and he's not taking any chances on love. Olivia is torn by his aloofness and tries to stomach one more gig with the cold man before cutting out for good. Will their wishes to the blue moon be enough to push them together, or will their doubts forever keep them apart?--Sadie is always a force to be reckoned with, and this time's no exception! Author White's signature character is back in shades of less than pure white and it's just as wild a romp as her first story, "Sadie the Shady Angel", found in No Law Against Love anthology.

"Under the Pale Moonlight" by Katherine Smith--Arthur Cameron is at peace with his physical limitations--or is he? The beautiful and young Alicia McCray longs to catch the handsome man's eye, and has for years. Will yet another yearly visit to his estate finally be the one where he confesses his true feelings? The spirited lass is tired of longing for him and takes matters into her own hands. Will the handsome horse trainer overcome the limitations he's set for his heart?--Author Smith has written a poignant tale of bittersweet love, the kind that overcomes the boundaries set by crippling fears. A sweet tear-jerker of a read!

"Ember's Desire" by Meagan Hatfield--Ember longs for a life less ordinary--less ordinary than spell casting and her coven can provide. Not the most skilled witch, she nevertheless gives it one good last try one fateful solstice night. What she conjures is the makings of any woman's dreams. Balder is a god fallen from grace and at the mercy of the under lord Loki. When Ember pulls Balder from hell, Loki will do all in his vengeful power to smote the two from existence.--Without a doubt, "Ember's Desire" is one of the most enjoyable short stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Hatfield has created two main characters, and one foreboding villain, that abound with emotion, conflict and a fiery passion. An added bonus is Ms. Hatfield's coming full-length debut, "A Magical Encounter", coming in 2007 from Wings ePress.

"Spellbound" by Aysel Arwen--Emma MacPherson is a frequent visitor at Loch Ness and its ancient stone edifice, Castle Urquhart. When she loses her mother's beloved wedding ring on the grounds, she goes back in the cover of night to search for it. What she finds under the blue moon's irresistible sway is Alexander Grant, supposed night watchman to the castle. As the clouds give way to the moon's soft glow, Alex enchants the lovely Emma with tales of the vengeful Lady of the Loch. Finding her heart has more in common with this stranger than at first thought, Emma soon finds herself in an enticing temptation. Will Alex's gamble with the lovely Emma break the Lady's hold on him?--Ms. Arwen uses a poignant sensuality in her writing, giving her characters a real depth and passion that readers will feel coming through the pages. A multi-published author like Arwen is not to be missed.

"Enchantment by the Sea" by M. J. Sager--Clara Barnes is all business at an exclusive resort in the Caribbean. She's there to interview the owner, Grayson Everett--not to become attracted to him! She learned her lesson the hard way before and she's not about to let another handsome face cost her a job. But thanks to the pull of the blue moon and the man's insistently sensual charms, she finds herself falling for him. Has she made the right decision, or his her heart in danger again?--Readers will feel an instant connection to Clara, whose dilemma is heart wrenching to read. Betrayal and a healing of the heart both make author Sager's story a fantastic read. Check out her other short story in the "No Law Against Love" anthology as well, entitled "A Second Chance at Forever".

"Suddenly You" by Jaquelin Lorin--Celine Chauvin restores old paintings and her current project has her much more than intrigued. Her fascination about the subject, a handsome unknown man leads her to a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi and to a wish on the magical blue moon. Yanked back in time, she is suddenly confronted with the man of the painting! The dilemma Celine now faces is to find a way back to her time, or find a way to embrace a past love she had no idea was waiting for her.--Fans of time travel romance will be delighted with author Lorin's contribution. Prepare to be transported back to a love of all consuming and timeless magic in this riveting tale.

"Blue Moon and the Warrior" by Lee Roland--Allison has it all--a great teaching job and wonderful friends, yet her heart yearns for someone she can love. On a camping trip in the desert, she makes a whimsical wish on the blue moon. What appears as if in a dream is a magical encounter with a stranger she will never forget. As another year passes, Allison cannot let go of her dream lover, until she meets Richard Fallon. Something tugs at her memory when she is with Richard, but will her heart be able to recognize the gift standing right in front of her?--Author Roland pens a fresh, unique tale of paranormal love that dares to step from the boundaries of dreams into the heart of real life. A gripping read with some very interesting twists!

"Midsummer Magic" by Kristi Ahlers--Meredith is a lass troubled by an impending marriage, for her future husband is a most cruel lord. Her wish to the blue moon has her quickly in the grasp of Kieran Fraser, a powerful Scots chief. With his own wish to the magical orb, he's fair convinced Meredith is the lass he has been longing for. When the light of day chases away the moon's beguiling haze, Kieran is not quite the man she envisioned. Can he convince the fair maid she means more to him than a mere feudal prize?--A powerful attraction marks this bewitching tale by Ms. Ahlers. Meredith and Kieran's heat sparks from their first meeting till the very last page. Just enough tidbits of 1557 England infused the story, lending an excellent air of historical romance. Another brilliantly penned tale by Ms. Ahlers! Check out her debut story, "The Trouble with French Kisses", found in the awesome anthology "No Law Against Love".

"Secret of the Blue Moon" by Billie Warren Chai--Dr. Zoey Blackstone is a brilliant doctor in Lincoln County, New Mexico, but her past comes back to haunt her one fateful day in the form of Jake Runningbear, the man she left behind. Jake remembers their irresistible attraction and has always wondered why the petite woman ran from him. It's time to solve an old mystery and he's not letting another opportunity pass him by when a storm leaves them stranded together.--This heart-wrenching tale left me breathless at the unfair actions taken against Zoey in the past. Jake is a formidable hero, and his pursuit of Zoey was an exciting chase to read about. A brilliant and engaging story, Ms. Chai!

"The Darkness and the Dreams" by Kimberly Ivey--Paloma Deltorre reads to comatose patient David Hopkins. Poetry, romance, it matters not what, but she reads to him fully believing it will help in his recovery. It is a way to soothe her own heart's aching loss--that of her fiancé one year ago. With the help of her kooky neighbor, Grandma Bikini, Paloma will come to realize that love can indeed cross over to endure in a way she never before imagined. When David miraculously awakens one day, he is not the man she thought he'd be, but one her heart recognizes all the same.--What an interesting twist author Ivey pens into her unique story! A sure-fire win of an entertaining read!

"The Healer" by Leanne Burroughs--Author Burroughs takes fans back with her vivid portrayal of the Scottish Highlands as told in her riveting books "Highland Wishes" and "Her Highland Rogue". Agnes, the frank and capable healer is in need of no one, especially a man. But when Warwick, the laird's second in command comes into danger, she will look to the blue moon to guide him to safety. Can an auld woman learn to open a heart she's long guarded? And furthermore, can an old warrior learn how to handle this confounding and bewitching woman?--Burroughs takes us right back to the time of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce and shows us that love can indeed flourish amongst the hills and valleys of that long ago era. An endearing and heart-grabbing story!

"In the Space of a Heartbeat" by Keelia Greer--Melania Knight would rather avoid Trevor Kerrin, sexy vamp and vitally important employee of Life Blood Corporation. Since she's been hired to protect him, it's no dice for her. When an immortal and fanatical enemy sets his sights on Melania, she and Trevor team up to take him down. It's a kill or be killed in a race to save not only themselves, but the fate of the human race.
-- Greer has penned two delightful characters that readers will yearn for more of. "In the Space of a Heartbeat" reveals a cleverly built futuristic setting that this reviewer would love to see again. Bravo, Ms. Greer, for a great, action packed thrill of a sci-fi short! Looking forward to more!

"Rider in the Storm" by DeborahAnne MacGillivray--A love that endures, one that lives, breathes and beats still--this is Ciara MacIain's dilemma. For seven years she has maintained the pain of losing, through death, the one person that made her heart whole.
How can she let go of that last vestige of her lover's life, her grief? It keeps his memory alive and she knows not how to release it. On the anniversary of her lover's death she encounters a stranger. Roarke Devlin is a man possessed by haunting whispers of another life. Something has driven him to the hills of Kentucky, and the rolling storm this night drives him into the arms of a beautiful woman. When his strange actions and astounding comments begin to alarm, Ciara knows all is not as it appears. Something about this alluring and sensual man speaks to her as once another did.-- MacGillivray reaches into the heart of her readers, barring no emotions that come with the loss of a loved one. Every aspect of this story is alive, from the thunderous storm to the persnickety cat,
Sinnjinn. A wonderful addition to MacGillivray's growing slew of writing successes! Be sure to pick up a copy of her upcoming solo anthology, "Cat `O Nine Tales" from Highland Press and "A Restless Knight" from Kensington.

Romance fans will treasure this all-encompassing anthology of love made possible by the magic of the blue moon. Be sure to check out its companion volume, Blue Moon Enchantment as well. Bravo, ladies, for a brilliantly done book!

5 out of 5 stars Super read! A keeper for sure!!.......2006-06-25

I love anthologies because you can carry the book around and read just one story in a short time, maybe while waiting for the dentist, the doctor or whatever. Not so with Blue Moon Magic. This book grabs you with the first story, hangs on through all 15 fantastic magical adventures, and keeps you turning pages. You won't want to put this one down till you've read all 15 stories. A short run down of the stories:

1. Belle of the Blue Moon Ball by Dawn Thompson starts the magic with two mischievious fairies in an entertaining Regency to tickle your funny bone.

2. Where Sea Meets Skye by Erin Hatton is a contemporary set in Scotland. Who doesn't love a Scottish hero in a kilt? Add the legend of the selkies and magic of the Blue Moon, and you get a very satisfying read.

3. Angels In The Moonlight by Diane Davis White is a contemporary set in California. Sadie, the Shady Angel makes you laugh out loud right from the first page, and keeps you entertained through the whole story. We should all wish for an angel like Sadie to help us find our soulmate.

An empire in danger, weak and cowardly, needs courageous leaders to save humanity. That about summons it up in one line.

I enjoyed the character development and plot. Steve White wrote a solid story that incorporates interesting characters like General Ivar Brady-Schiovana and his sons which the novel rotates around. The writing style is similiar to a David Drake novel.

I read in a day.

5 out of 5 stars White Dawn.......2003-08-02

When Emily Ambrose's father abandons her in the wilds of Michigan Territory, she's terrified. Before they're out of sight, though, Emily's parents are attacked right before her very eyes. She runs to her mother, and receives a locket from her mother right before she died, along with some interesting words...
Swift Foot is to be the next chief in his Sioux tribe. But when he hears a cry in his dreams, the tribe shaman tells him he is to leave and find out what it is. Swift Foot later finds Emily, and they fall in love and become lovers. But Swift Foot knows he can't bring her back to his tribe because his people will be reminded of his father's acts. He leaves her in the middle of the night, but stays close to wait for John Cartier to find her in the morning.
John Cartier is so lonely that when he sees his Lady Dawn, he thinks it's an illusion. But no, it is Emily, a heartbroken, ready-to-die Emily. John helps heal her emotionally, and falls in love with her in the meantime.

Emily is so wary of love it's sad, because John loves her with all his heart. Then, she falls in love with him as well, but learns she's become pregnant by her Indian lover.
There are several more problems along the way, such as Willy, John's ne'er-do-well cousin. But then, the road to true love has never been easy!
**Edwards has written an award-winning novel of hopes that are crushed and love that'll never die. This book was the first of Edwards books I'd read. I just picked it up in the grocery store one day, got home, and read through it all in one sitting. It made me cry so hard when Swift Foot left poor Emily. I could actually hear her anguished cries. Laughter and love, tears and pain, all part of the game of true love.

4 out of 5 stars You HAVE GOT to read this one!.......2002-07-02

Set in 1810, near the Missouri River. Emily Ambrose had been abused by her father, a preacher, all her life. Yet it still came as a shock the day Emily found herself being left behind as her parents abandoned her. Emily had been left to die! Ironically, her father's hatred saved Emily's life. Before her parents' wagon was out of sight, Indians attacked, killed them, and stole all the supplies. Emily came out of hiding in time to hold her dying mother and learn some family secrets.

Swift-Foot was to become chief of his Sioux tribe soon. The council had already chosen the woman he would marry. First, Swift-Foot had to seek out the answer to his visions. He came upon Emily, lost and alone. This was his test. He would save her and return her to the white world. They fell in love and became lovers, but Swift-Foot could not keep her with him. He abandoned Emily in the woods, but stuck around to make sure John, a friendly trapper, found her before returning to his tribe.

John Cartier thought her to be an angel of the dawn. He vowed to treat her well and help her heal. He would be the friend Emily so desperately needed. John quickly fell in love with her. But after being abandoned twice by those she had trusted, he knew Emily first needed time and understanding.

**** I can not tell more without giving away something vital and I refuse to spoil the story for you. My only regret was not being able to read more of the time between Emily and Swift-Foot. I loved how the author was able to make me, as the reader, understand that Swift-Foot's future would be a story too. Since Emily got her story told in this one, I hope Swift-Foot will be the main focus of the next.

Susan Edwards made the story even more realistic by letting characters from a previous story make an appearance. Each book is a story in itself, so the reader does not have to had read any of the others to enjoy this novel. However, by having read them, I feel as though I am a part of each family. This entire series ROCKS! Don't miss out! ****

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit by Susan Edwards.......2002-05-14

I have to say, that I have always loved Susan Edwards work. And now, with White Dawn, the seventh book in the White Series, she has touched my heart yet again. Here, this story is about Emily Ambrose, the mother of Sarah, aka White Wind.
Emily finds herself stranded and alone after her hateful father abandons her in the wilds. She is then found by a mysterious Indian Man, Swift Foot. Well, as fate would have it, the two fall in love. Well, nothing lasts forever and eventually her Indian lover has to leave her for duties that call him back to his tribe.
Emily is then found by John Cartier, a handsome trapper. The two fall in love, but of course there are trials and tribulations along the way, one of them that Emily turns out to be pregnant by her Indian lover.
This book is insightful to how the whole White Series came to be. It is a sad, touching story at first, but then hope and love turn to make the book a wondrous adventure. I highly recommend this book to Susan Edward fans!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars exciting Indian-frontier romance that is actually a prequel.......2002-05-11

In 1810, Timothy Ambrose flies into a rage at what his daughter Emily wears. As he calls her names like "Satan's Spawn", she tries to explain that she has no other dress as Father Richard ripped the one she is wearing when he accosted her. Refusing to listen, Timothy beats her before informing his wife that they are leaving behind this whore in the Territory of Michigan wilderness.

Sioux Chief Swift Foot seeks the spirit world on a quest. Instead he finds a frightened Emily and protects her from the danger of the wild. He takes her back to his people, but on the journey they fall in love. However, Swift Foot cannot be the tribe chief and marry a white. Responsibility forces him to abandon a stunned Emily.

Trapper John Cartier is lonely so when he finds Emily he hopes that God has answered his prayers for a companion. He falls in love with her, but Emily knows that love hurts and refuses to fall under the beguiling spell of her host.

The seventh tale in Susan Edward's "White ..." series, WHITE DAWN, is an exciting Indian-frontier romance that is actually a prequel to the first novel (see WHITE WIND). The angst-laden story line is fast-paced as readers see the story of Sarah Cartier's parents, both of whom are delightful characters seeking yet fearing love in a cruel world. Though at times the emotion is too melodramatic, fans will appreciate this engaging story and look forward to the other prequel tale starring the parents of Golden Eagle (Swift Foot and Small Bird).

Book Description

In 1813 Charles James Mason gave the public just what they needed, patenting his "ironstone china." This durable yet beautiful dinnerwarewas stronger and less expensive than the china that then dominated the market. And its white, unadorned base soon became popular as a canvas for decorations such as Flow Blue, Mulberry, and Copper Lustre, especially the Tea Leaf motif. This pictorial and collectors' guide provides an alphabetic listing of all known shapes and their makers, illustrated with more than 700 color photographs to help easily identify pieces and show the ironstone in detail never seen before. Collectors will find this cross-referencing tool invaluable. Included is also a miscellaneous chapter, which brings to new light the unusual and hard to find pieces and a section devoted entirely to children's sets. Color photographs of makers' marks are identified and dated to aid those wishing to date their pieces.

This is a surprisingly comprehensive overview for such a small book (173 pages). Decent photography shows the shapes, makers' marks and various decorative motifs that are traditional to white ironstone. The pricing guide is helpful and the bibliography will help expand your interest.

Awakening To Equality: A Young White Pastor At The Dawn Of Civil Rights by Karl E. Lutze is the engaging story of a young Lutheran priest's approach to the newly emerging era of American civil rights activism in 1945 as a newcomer to the world of clerical practice. As the young Karl Lutze found himself placed in Oklahoma's Muskogee, amidst a greatly African American community, Awakening To Equality carries the reader through the inherently fascinating saga of his dual practice in Tulsa and Muskogee, and his journey through sights and experiences of black and white power rallies, activism from both races, and an economically impoverished but spiritual enriched black culture. Providing an unforgettable story and a timeless perspective of significant time in American 20th Century cultural and political history, Awakening To Equality is very strongly recommended to students of American history, particularly the Civil Rights movement, for its invaluable eye-witness perspective.
