At Home in Mitford.......2007-09-28
So, far I have gotten through the first book for class. I am a person drawn to "story", so this book is one I am reading for my ISSUES OF INTERGRITY class at my seminary, and it really speaks to me (and its not that bad of a read either). Sometimes I am weary about the number of pages, yet the story itself about Father/Rector Tim keeps me glued for hours, which has not happened in a while. There is also a subtle irony in the title, because Tim doubts some in the book if this is where he should be or not. Its almost a transitory title, it could be called "For Now At Home In Mitford" - but I guess that would seem too long.. ha ha
The Mitford Years (1-6).......2007-09-28
Because of a sudden death in my family I haven't had time to read but about 1/2 of the first book (At Home in Mitford) in the boxed set. After reading only 1/2 of the first book I would recommend it highly
Wonderful Series.......2007-06-06
I have read this series myself and have given it several times as gifts. This purchase was a gift for my best friend. I previously gave it to my 102-year-old aunt, my mother and my neighbor. Everyone I know who has read these books, loves them.
AT HOME IN MITFORD BOX SERIES.......2007-06-01
THIS ORDER CAME VERY QUICKLY! IT WAS A VERY NICELY PACKAGED GIFT THAT I WAS PROUD TO GIVE. MOM WAS VERY HAPPY!
Absolutly Delightful!.......2007-05-07
This set of books set in Mitford are such a pleasure to read. Part way through you begin to feel like you, too, are a citizen of this wonderful town. Jan Karon sure can write! I would reccomend them highly.

Couldn't be better.......2007-09-12
I bought this as a gift for a friend. She loves it and is using it daily. She hasn't taken her test yet but she tells me that this book has helped her a bunch!
Helpful.......2007-08-15
This book was very helpful. I passed my GED on the first try. I didnt take any classes, I just studied this book. Very good book, I might add!!
book came in a timely fashion.......2007-03-09
I could not believe how fast the book arrived. It was in great condition and very helpful for my son. I would buy from amazon again and I highly recommend it to others that need books.
Complete study guide.......2007-03-08
This book is very nicely laid out with easy to understand examples, especially in the Math section which is why I bought this book in the first place. Well.. . that and the fact that I'm not even going to think about taking the GED Based on what I can recall from high school. It's a hefty volume to be sure. Easily large enough for a door stop, or if you want to leave a lasting impression with someone, you could slap them in the face with it, and they will remember you for the rest of their lives. (Kidding.) But it is quite large, and needs to be, for there is a lot of study material and plenty of practice questions in each section. I recommend this text to anyone who is attempting to pass the GED test. There is a nice pre-test. . . that after taking it, reminds you of how stupid you were for dropping out in the first place. But really, if you need to brush up or have been away from the classroom setting for a long time, Then get this book.
Excellent for Homeschoolers!.......2007-02-21
This book is very comprehensive, and a great way to verify that your high school aged homeschoolers are on track!

The village of Mitford is soothing tonic for a readership that feels starved for community and yearns for clear morals. The recently married Father Tim and his plain-folk neighbors live the best of Christianity in everyday life. Even the rampant gossip in Mitford is the good kind: folks worrying about other folks and everyone minding one another's business out of concern rather than malice. As a result, no one faces a crisis alone. Often the crises are cause for a belly laugh, such as the rectory's new computer system that seems programmed to torment. But just as often the crises have the bite of real-life problems, such as the bloody young girl in shredded clothes, whom Father Tim finds after she was beaten by her drunken father, and the soul-wrenching despair Father Tim feels when he loses a surrogate mother. The heavily quoted scripture gives a day-to-day context for biblical teachings as well as spiritual solace during the sadder days at Mitford. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
For years, Mitford's sixty-something rector has been happily married to his parish. Now he's also married to Cynthia, his vivacious next-door neighbor. For Father Tim, life in Mitford has never been so full of surprises. His wife is "aging" his already ancient kitchen walls, not to mention burning his draperies. The mountain boy he's learned to love as his own makes a heartrending decision. And the agony of mastering the church computer system is as boggling as the pandemonium that breaks loose when his quiet rectory becomes a nursery. All this, however, is small potatoes compared to what happens on a wilderness camping trip that sends him home a changed man. In These High, Green Hills, Jan Karon takes her readers on a heartwarming and hilarious visit to Mitford, where her lovable characters always inspire laughter, tears, and fresh hope.

Jan Karon.......2007-10-03
I love this series and would hope everyone would read it. It is how life should be.
Third in the series.......2007-04-17
Cynic that I am, I do not usually like any book that could be described as "heartwarming," and this book has been described with that adjective. So why am I not giving it a review of only one star? Because despite myself I enjoyed the book. I know it is manipulative in the extreme. I realize that Ms. Karon stacks the cards to make everything come out well--e.g. when Father Tim and wife are lost in the cave and rescued before they suffer more than mild thirst. The whole thing is akin to the old western movies where the sandy streets are filled with horses but there is no horse manure--ever. Mitford just doesn't have any hardcore villains, no real crime, no manure. When people curse, we don't actually hear the words. It is, in effect, Pleasantville.
The fact is, this and the first two installment are not novels at all by any strict definition. There is no real plot that works throughout. Rather, there are mostly minor incidents that soon get resolved or are left over for the next book. Oh, people die and babies are born and there are marriages. But nothing of real moment happens outside the pale. Jeopardy does not enter into this little mountain town.
I must admit that I am troubled at times by the theological intrusions. These seem to increase with each book so far. Father Tim, the central character, is an Episcopal priest, so religion is unavoidable within the narrative. Alexander Pope, the 18th century English poet, warned us to beware of anyone with only one book, be it the Koran or Bible or Catcher in the Rye. Not every solution or measure or value can be found in one work. And not all of Father Tim's solutions are found in one book--or so it seems to me.
But it is comfortable for a reader to go to Mitford for a few hours, and in the final analysis, the real reason we read is to enjoy, to escape, as it were. Mitford is an escape from the more trying events of the real world. I'm now on the fourth installment of the Mitford books with five more to go. I look forward to the trip.
Prompt and reliable.......2007-01-12
This item arrived within a few days and was in the condition as stated.
Wonderful... as are all of Jan Karon's books!.......2006-05-12
Mitford is the kind of place that we would all love to live.... a slpeey little town in the mountains where you know your neighbors. I recommend buying this book... and curling up in your favorite chair with a warm blanket and cup of hot chocolate! Turn the phones off and slip away... I guarentee that you won't want to come back!
Karon Satisfies Cravings.......2006-03-20
For those who have been craving yet another helping of Mitford, Jan Karon's, These High Green Hills will surely satisfy your appetite. This third book in the series immediately dives into the newlywed lives of Tim and Cynthia Kavanagh. As frequent Mitford readers know, Tim's marriage to Cynthia came as a shock to everyone, including Tim himself. Being a bachelor for over sixty years had definitely created many habits that Tim finds hard to break. However, with Cynthia's bright spirit, and ever flowing creative juices, Tim soon realizes that change is inescapable, even in the small town of Mitford.
While Tim plunges into married life, many of his closest friends experience variation in their lives as well. Tim's surrogate son, Dooley ventures into the world of private education, thanks to benefactress, Ms. Sadie Baxter. Though she is aging, Ms. Sadie shows the same old spunk, and continues to develop her lifelong friendship with her domestic employee, Louella. When the town helps Ms. Sadie celebrate her ninetieth birthday, the future seems as bright as ever. However, Ms. Sadie takes a turn for the worst when she falls and injures her wrist. Despite the worries of her health, everyone anxiously awaits the completion of The Hope House Retirement Home, Ms. Sadie's largest contribution to Mitford. She is providing the money in honor of the Episcopalian church, where Tim holds the pastoral position. Since Father Tim resides as her priest [her most beloved in her years of membership], Ms. Sadie gives him the task of finding a chaplain for the home. Apart from the worries of this job, Father Tim must still fulfill his duties to his parish, including the labors he detests. For instance, the understanding of technology. Due to the slow progression of Mitford, hardly anyone knows much about electronics, especially computers. However, the church soon discovers that a computer is a must for keeping things organized. Will Tim win the technological battle with his longtime secretary, Emma Newland? Change is forever creeping into the quiet peace of Mitford.
Beyond the borders of the small town lies a rough area known as `The Creek'. Poverty, drugs, abuse, and much more are prevalent throughout this domain. As Father Tim becomes more involved with helping the people in this area, the struggles become involved with him as well. Several situations leave him feeling helpless, and he must rely solely on his faith in God's strength. Tim and Cynthia encounter another faith-testing experience when they agree to help chaperone the youth camping trip.
Throughout the ups and downs in the hills of Mitford, Tim continues to learn the meaning of true faith, and that God is in complete control. He professes this lesson to others during the story, amongst birth, death, romance, new life, and whatever else is served to the town of Mitford. Karon has truly outdone herself this time. She's shaken things up a bit, which leaves readers with the usual: still hankering for more!!

Not of much value........2007-06-12
Very little useful information. If you planning a home theatre this book really doens't offer any information on design or component integration. Very basic in it's approach with references to VCR's and other dated technology.
Great pocket book.......2007-01-17
As an proffesional I apreciate this book, it gives precise information. It is well written and on plain english as it's posiblle.
I recomending this book!
Very Useful Reference.......2006-12-20
I bought this book as a quick reference for a Technical Support group I manage. We have a few dozen products that require an installer to run wires throughout a house. Unfortunately, a large majority of the calls I get are wiring related and this book provides tremendous insight into the problems created by improper wiring.
If you want to learn about wiring, this is the book to buy. I also bought the full book that goes with it. It must be good because I got the only paperback, and all the used hardback books are almost double the retail price.
From this guide you'll learn everything relating to wiring. You'll learn balanced vs unbalanced, ground loop isolation vs cross talk, and the list would almost be half as long as the pocket guide. Simply put, if your livlihood depends upon wiring, this book will help you a great deal.
So much information in such a small space. Best of its Kind........2006-05-01
Belden is the king of cables and Stephen Lampen is a Belden Kingpin. This book is one-of-a-kind and is a must for anyone working with, or even remotely interested in audio, video, data and/or CATV cabling. It is essential, fundamental knowledge about using cables.
Nope, it's not for the "novis" but I believe a novice will find it interesting if you understand the concept that 2 wires make a circuit. Take your time with it and Google anything you don't understand. There are some complex topics in here but nothing you won't get your head around if you read it and think about it. It is presented in a good, logical progressive order.
Stephen makes it all readable with many interesting and amusing anecdotes and tidbits. The "Grounded Dog" story (p 363) is worth the price of the book alone.
I've been in broadcast Engineering for years and this book solved a few mysteries for me.
Check out the contents list to see if it's for you.
Not for the novis........2005-09-07
I purchased this product with a novis knowledge of electronics. I could not understand one page. If you are a novis this is not the book for you.
Book Description
"If there is one principle that has guided the spectacular advances in our understanding of the cosmos during the last hundred years, it is the concept of symmetry. In SYMMENTRY AND THE BEAUTIFUL UNIVERSE, Leon Lederman and Chris Hill have captured the essence of this simple yet profound concept and conveyed its wonders with art and precision. In accessible and entertaining language, the authors provide readers with a crystal-clear window to physics' most refined theories, allowing us all to appreciate the awe-inspiring beauty of the universe." BRIAN GREENE, Author of THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE and THE FABRIC OF THE COSMOS; Professor of Physics, Columbia University
"Symmetry is the way in to understanding the world; symmetry is part of beauty. Lederman and Hill, the mist skillful of guides, show us the multitude of ways in which the physical world is shaped by symmetry. They take us on a lively tour of our subtle symmetry (and understandably asymmetric) world, from planets to quarks. In Lederman and Hill's book we are led masterfully to an appreciation of the crucial role of symmetry in this world." ROALD HOFFMANN, Nobel Laureate; Frank H. T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Cornell University
"An enigma of twentieth-century physics is the question of symmetry as a guiding principle of nature. Did nature start with the idea of symmetry, or is it an accidental consequence? Is symmetry, with its aesthetic appeal, a fundamental principle? In this penetrating and lucid book the authors, both top physicists, take on symmetry as a basic principle. They succeed in a marvelous way, and consequently this book is a must for the serious student of nature." MARTINUS VELTMAN, Nobel Laureate; Author of FACTS AND MYSTERIES IN ELEMENTARY PARTICLE PHYSICS
"Formidable as a snow-covered peak, the concept of symmetry looms as a central challenge to all those who would understand modern physics. In this delightful but instructive book, Leon Lederman and Christopher Hill have rendered the great service of making this concept accessible to lay readers." J. MADELEINE NASH, Author of EL NINO: UNLOCKING THE SECRETS OF THE MASTER WEATHER-MAKER.

The symetry I missed.......2007-01-09
Somehow in college (66-70) I missed the importance on symetry in physics. I majored in math, and when I learned that a fellow math student (Frank Wilczek) won the Nobel in Physics based on his math work, I started trying to figure out what I had missed. Somehow the importance of group theory (while clear in math) was not being taught in undergraduate physics even at Chicago. I have read quite a bit, and found this book to be very enlightening. They never get around to proving (or ever really explaining) Noether's theorem, but this book is the best of a very large lot.
beautiful!.......2006-12-30
Most textbooks describe the conservation laws one at a time. Students learn them as a list of topics: Conservation of this, conservation of that. Pass the test. Forget about it. Yawn. This is why most people say they hate physics.
This book takes an important step in changing the way we think about physics, particularly the conservation laws. The conservation laws are much deeper, as explained by Noether's Theorem. They aren't separate topics at all. They are part of one important concept: symmetry. Now we see that there is a connection between conctrete concepts, such as conservation of momentum, and some of the theories in particle physics. Now we have reason to talk about modern physics in a course on classical mechanics.
Hopefully this book will inspire enough people that these ideas will show up in the classroom more. I will certainly incorporate these ideas in the physics classes I teach. In addition, I found that Emmy Noether's struggles are inspiring to many students, and her story provides an appropriate way to discuss something other than physics in a physics class.
Great Book About the Universe.......2006-06-18
This is a book about the history of the universe and the physical laws governing it. It also tells the story of the scientists whose work brought modern physics to the point where it is today.
This is a great book,
Not what I expected.......2006-06-10
I considered this book because of two main reasons: trying to get a deeper knowldege of the symmetries that are behind the main scientific theories, and Leon Lederman, its well-known author. After reading the book, I can say that I have not learnt almost anything new about Symmetry. Actually, I have read other physics books that have taught me much more on Symmetry, even if they did not focus on it.
The book is well written. I read it completely, and I do not think it was a waste of time, but it did not fulfil my expectations. Furthermore, it contains many ideas on political and social issues. I'm not going to judge them, but I do not think it is fair to use a book on Symmetry and the Universe for those purposes. If I wanted to read something on those matters, I would have chosen other books and other authors.
I have read lots of good reviews of this book, so I suspect that this book is not oriented to frequent readers of physics books. The problem is that they are the ones that most likely will read books written by Leon Lederman on Symmetry.
A superb book on modern physics.......2006-06-08
Wow. This is some book. Unlike many books that describe the evolution of modern cosmological theory, this one is dedicated to the understanding of physics itself, both its history and it's collation of knowledge about reality.
Through the course of the text, the history of discoveries in physics is described, giving all contributors from Aristarchis, Galileo and Newton, to Einstein, Feynman and Guth, among others, their just due. That it has been a globe effort is evident from the source nationalities of these intellects, as diverse as Scotland and Japan. The narration clearly illustrates that good science is the result of the cumulative efforts of many different individuals, from many different cultures throughout history.
Interesting too is that the book's basic starting point is the intellectual contribution of a brilliant female mathemation, Amalia Noether, working at about the same time and in the same country as the better known Einstein. It is her theory of symmetry in physics, worked out in mathematical theorems, that created a major connecting link between physics and mathematics. Although the book is not in depth enough to actually make her contribution clearer than "Noether's Theorum," her discoveries are obviously at the core of the entire movement in modern physics. It's nice to know that my old high school math teacher, who so disparaged the math abilities of his female students was wrong, wrong, wrong.
The book is well conceived in its presentation of the information. It begins with the earliest efforts of the ancient Greeks and Romans to understand the workings of nature. Their concepts, sometimes startlingly close to the truth, served as the starting point for later researchers. The character of physics as a discipline is presented from a Newtonian perspective in the earlier portions of the book, and I have to say, while it does not bog one down in detailed formulae, it makes much more sense of basic physics than many books do.
The next few chapters deal with Einstein and Bohr, relativity and quantum mechanics. Probably no other book I've read on these subjects has done as good a job of pulling the whole thing together; particularly the authors manage to connect the concepts of Newtonian and modern physics more clearly for the reader. While many books have attempted to do this, often it seems as though the authors make the assumption that the reader will see how the two are connected and hop from one topic to the next without connecting comments. Lederman and Hill put the entire thing out there for the student, assuming that it is not obvious how the two are connected. This description is in fact the bulk of the book.
The last pages of the book are dedicated to a detailed description of the more recent contributions to physics, particularly the theories relating to sub-atomic particles and their interactions and the concepts behind the Feynman diagrams. I have to admit that this aspect of physics has always been the most confusing to me. The authors went a good distance to clearing up some of the questions I had about the topic. This is, however, the most complex discussion in the book, and one that I will doubtless have to re-read before I am entirely comfortable with it.
A superb book on modern physics, one that I'll re-read. I suggest that it be used as an introductory text to high school physics classes, since it makes the details of Newtonian physics usually taught at this level clearer and introduces advanced physics in a more understandable form.

The Second Go Around.......2007-09-25
These books were purchased for my son who reads them every semester. They are his stress relief and he has just about worn out my copies. I got him these so I could have mine to read. Jan Karon has a wonderful way with characters - you know some of the people she writes about. The books are wonderful reading. Light but filled with the sorrows of life as well. Through these books you are encouraged to deepen your walk with God as He is portrayed so accurately.
Volume 1-3: At Home in Mitford.......2007-02-17
Upon recommendation of the a church librarian, we gave these books to my aunt in Texas. She has enjoyed reading them and appreciated their humor and the real life presentation. She thought they were great and is interested in others from the Mitford series.
Warm, engrossing stories of everyday life in a small town.......1999-11-16
The Mitford books are the most wonderful heart-felt adventures in small town living. The characters are real, their real-life problems and victories speak to all of us, and the feel of goodness and Christian faith stay with you long after the books are finished. Unforgettable! I wish Father Tim were the rector in our parish...
Wonderful place to visit!!!.......1999-09-06
The style of writing in this book transports you there!! I feel like I know these people after reading this series! Maybe because there is a little bit of all of these characters in each of us or we at least know someone like them!!! I look forward to all the Mitford books. Wholesome, fun, and easy to read!!
Please don't stop this woderful series!.......1999-05-31
I didn't think it was possible however, the second installment of the Mitford Series was just as warm, wonderful and cozy as the first! At last, it is such a pleasure to read a series of books dedicated to mature love with decency and something left to one's imagaination. I cannot thank Ms. Karon enough for bravely showing the timeliness and gentleness of what the gift of patience brings to those whose choose to wait on God and to wait for the other person to learn about themselves so that they may into share that knowledge in learning to love someone to include them in their life in marriage!
The literary world has been in need of such a refreshing style and gentleness of touch. That you again, Ms. Karon for giving us back love, respect and commitment.
God's blessings on this and all your future endeavors!
Book Description
The girls of Sacred Heart Holy Angels eye the good dancers at the all-ages club Metropolis. They waste afternoons at the mall, check out parties on the lake, burn through candid, casual sex.
Everybody calls them the Whores on the Hill, but they don't care.
It is the mid-'80s and they go to the last all-girls' school in Milwaukee, where innocence is scarce and happiness is something to grabbed at in the backseat of a fast car.
Meet exuberant, uninhibited Astrid, her nervy, troubled friend Juli and Thisbe, the shy, ascetic newcomer. They are fifteen years old. And they believe they can take on the world, no matter what it calls them.
But when euphoric promiscuity mixes with a series of dangerous, deadly pranks, their world at Sacred Heart Holy Angels can never be the same.

Another good 80s flashback book.......2007-08-10
I was blown away by this book. The whole "good girl gone bad" thing is an enjoyable topic to read about. If you like THE BITCH POSSE and CONFESSIONS OF A CATHOLIC SCHOOLGIRLConfessions of a Catholic Schoolgirl you will love this book!
Not what I expected.......2007-07-01
This book wasn't what I expected it to be, but it was still somewhat interesting. Not one of my favorites, but regardless, I'm glad I read it.
proper representation????.......2007-05-07
I always laugh when my friends talk about this book. especially the ones who go to the school that is "represented" by the story. Those friends are always insisting that "nothing bad ever happens at their school" and "everyone, with out execption is nice" and "its like the only school that i have ever heard of that isn't trashy". so when I dropped this book off at one of their houses, she got a little mad at me.
My friends that go to (alright, I'm not going to say the name of the actual school) keep telling me that absolutly nothing in the plot is true and the plot in its entirety is made up, but i have to admit, some of the stuff in it is true, even if people at that school are unaware of it.
Finally!.......2007-03-17
Finally a good book! I loved this thing. The girls weren't one dimentional like I was afraid they might be. I could understand why a lot of people might not like this book (or even hate it) but I think a lot of young people would see a little, tiny bit of themselves in this book. Hopefully they weren't as crazy as these girls were! Anyways, I'd recomend this book to any slightly open-minded person who doesn't freak out over little things.
Understated prose, Larger than life characters.......2006-07-21
Colleen Curran's novel about life at the last all-girls' Catholic school in Milwaukee is a disturbing, yet eloquent read. The tale of three high school girls- Astrid, Juli, and Thisbe- beautifully depicts the lives of three rebel girls in the 80s who call themselves the "Whores on the Hill." They try to live up to their reputation, and we see most of the girls' school and social lives through the bewildered Thisbe's point of view. Through Thisbe, we learn of Juli's suicide attempts and Astrid's self-destruction. We learn of the disconnection she feels between herself and her divorced parents. We learn how dangerous the search for identity can be.
Luckily for readers, Curran doesn't turn this into a literary train wreck- Instead, we are treated to some rather extreme, but believable twists and turns. I read this book in one sitting, drinking in the characters and the stunning prose of this must-read novel.

Behind Expectation.......2002-04-18
For the past 4 years working in an Investment Bank I've read many business plans.
Don't expect too much from this reading. I'll recommend it just to beginners.
Highly Recommended.......1998-12-31
A very consise and well written guide. An excellent reference to have at your side while writing a business plan. I find it extremely useful. My only complaint is on the poor graphics in the book, especially since the author repeatedly stresses the importance of graphics in a business plan.
