Book Description
How many times have you thought about starting a diet or quitting smoking without doing anything about it? Or lapsed back into bad habits after hitting a rough spot on the road to recovery?
To uncover the secret to successful personal change, three acclaimed psychologists studied more than 1,000 people who were able to positively and permanently alter their lives without psychotherapy. They discovered that change does not depend on luck or willpower. It is a process that can be successfully managed by anyone who understands how it works. Once you determine which stage of change you're in, you can:
- create a climate where positive change can occur
- maintain motivation
- turn setbacks into progress
- make your new benefifificial habits a permanent part of your life
This groundbreaking book offers simple self-assessments, informative case histories, and concrete examples to help clarify each stage and process. Whether your goal is to start saving money, to stop drinking, or to end other self-defeating or addictive behaviors, this revolutionary program will help you implement positive personal change . . . for life.
The National Cancer Institute Found this program more than twice as effective as standard programs in helping smokers quit for 18 months.

What a nice change!.......2007-07-14
Unlike most self-help books out there, this one is actually based on research for a change. Based on this Phd's work on how people change, this guy has uncovered the different, predictable stages of change that people go through when they attempt to get themselves to change. Although the stages are fairly predictable, not everybody goes through them in the exact same order as some people skip various stages on their way to changing their behaviour. A great book all-in-all, it's definitely worth a look. Also liked The Sixty-Second Motivator.
an important book for change.......2007-07-10
OK, finally a book for change that is truly worth embracing. This is based on research, not mere theory. It clearly sets forth the process for how people change across a spectrum of stages that make sense. Several common problems are used as examples of the process. The reader without substantial background in psychotherapy may need some help, or a coach. I suggest the reader pick some area of his life where change is desired (start with something small to get the process learned both with word images and behavioural experience) and work through the book. Once the process is learned, move on to new challenges.
An essential book on self-improvement.......2007-05-27
Unless you are (or think you are) the ultimate, paradigmatic exemplar of Peter Drucker's "Effective Executive", you can probably think of a thing or two you would like to change about yourself. Certainly, CEOs and other top executives tend not to be heavy drinkers, heavy smokers, or simply very heavy, so you may be looking to change one of those behaviors. Or perhaps you find yourself making poor decisions because of long-standing impatience, arrogance, or inability to tolerate uncertainty. Perhaps an executive coach has identified a characteristic that you agree is less than optimal for your own career and for your organization's performance. Yet, like organizational change, personal change is hard. Reliable guidelines have been lacking for either kind of change. The authors of Changing for Good make a strong case for having developed a more scientifically sound approach to personal change.
Clinical psychologist James Prochaska and his colleagues studied the many strategies self-changers used to quit smoking, stop drinking, and lose weight. These researchers faced a challenge in figuring out what works and what doesn't for people attempting to change: over 400 distinct systems of psychotherapy now offer a helping hand. Each school relies on at least one, but often several, specific techniques. One group of people who were quitting smoking, Prochaska discovered, were using more than 130 different techniques. Anyone wanting to identify the most effective methods to change an unhealthy behavior would quickly become overwhelmed with options and confused by competing claims.
In 1975, Lester Luborsky, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, had published research showing that all generally accepted psychological therapies produced practically equivalent positive outcomes. Prochaska thought that if he could uncover what the therapies had in common, perhaps he could integrate them. After puzzling over his transtheoretical data, Prochaska realized that all those energetic disputes over causes, and all the diversity of techniques, concealed an underlying simplicity in the processes of change which described how change is produced. His final roster of processes of change included nine members: consciousness-raising, social liberation, emotional arousal, self-reevaluation, commitment, countering, environment control, rewards, and helping relationships.
By tuning in to what self-changers told him, Prochaska also discerned several distinct stages of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination. Enduring success at change requires that you know what stage you are in for the problem you want to overcome. "The key to success is the appropriately timed use of a variety of coping skills." The right processes should be used for each stage of change. Knowing the stage for the change at issue is the crucial element. Once you know that, you can deploy the relevant process, each of which can work through a variety of techniques such as observations, bibliotherapy, policy interventions, psychodrama, role playing, value clarification, imagery, decision-making therapy, logotherapy, relaxation, desensitization, environmental restructuring, contingency contracts, and social support.
As Prochaska and co-authors explain in detail, self-changers who tried to apply a technique suited for one process would be frustrated if that process were irrelevant to their current stage. You wouldn't get anywhere applying reinforcement techniques brilliantly designed for the process of reward if you were still in the precontemplation or contemplation stages. On the other hand, behaviorist techniques of reward and environment control could be effective if you were in the maintenance phase. If you were in the contemplation phase, where you accept that you need to make a change but still need to understand more about it, you should use change processes associated with the experiential, cognitive, and psychoanalytic traditions. These would include methods for self-reevaluation, countering dysfunctional thoughts, and emotional arousal. Improving the chances of successful change, Prochaska had shown, depended on matching processes and stages of change--a discovery whose breakthrough nature has been proven repeatedly ever since.
Changing for Good.......2007-02-19
Excellent guide for those interested in a path to changing behaviors that is sustainable.
Develop Good Habits, Eliminate Bad Habits.......2007-01-17
This book is a bit harder to read than most self-improvement books, but that's only because the authors take a serious-minded scientific approach to personal change. There are no useless platitudes here. It not only describes the stages and processes of change and how to apply them, just as importantly it discusses the solid scientific research that supports the authors' claims. The information in this book is initially harder to apply because it is not simplistic, but this doesn't matter, because any complexity is more than made up for by the knowledge that it is backed up by rigorous research. The fact that you don't have to take the authors' claims on faith helps you stick to a program of change.
The biggest concern I have with this book is that it seems to focus too much on eliminating negative habits instead of developing good ones. The research cited in this book depends heavily on individuals overcoming serious addictions such as alcohol, drugs, and smoking. It does talk about starting exercise programs. For someone whose primary concern is instilling good habits rather than eliminating bad ones, this may be a cause for concern. However, the book makes it relatively easy to apply the change model to developing positive behaviors. Overall, this is a must-read for anyone committed to personal and professional development.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Straightforward, no-nonsense survival guide for a changing world.......2005-07-04
Price Pritchett's little book, The Employee Handbook of New Work Habits For A Radically Changing World, should really be called "The Abridged Career Bible" and not a handbook. Could this have anything to do with the lucky number 13? Filled with his "13 Ground Rules for Job Success in the Information Age," Pritchett's book really is a survival manual. In an time of new technologies, services, knowledge work, and fierce worldwide competition, only those open to change-those who are flexible and invest their energy in finding and seizing opportunities-will thrive. Those who resist change and harbor bitterness will only end up going the way of the dinosaurs. And we don't need to be reminded of what eventually happened to the dinosaurs...
Pritchett advises workers to become quick-change artists. In an age of restructuring, outsourcing, downsizing, subcontracting, and forming new alliances, workers can expect new ways of working and having to align immediately with new organizational needs and realities. Being a quick-change artist-mobility-can build an employee's reputation.
Then again, says, Pritchett, so does commitment. Commit fully to your job. Companies now cannot afford to hire more employees to solve common problems. Nevertheless, clients and customers expect quality and speed. Companies' response is to throw fewer people at problems and to do more-faster and better-with less. This calls for highly committed people-those who work from the heart and invest passionately to their jobs. It follows that commitment will result in more satisfying work, too, bringing empowerment, relieving stress, and curing the pain of change.
Through their commitment and working from the heart, employees are contributing and adding value. Workers should think that they are being remunerated for the value they add rather than for their tenure, good intentions or activity level.
Employees' job security, therefore, depends on commitment and how valuable they are to customers. Employees must see themselves as service centers. They need to sharpen their insights into their personal "market" and understand what it is their customers do, expect and need. Employees need to know how they fit into the overall picture and how they will contribute to customers' success. Remember, warns Pritchett: "customer" does not only imply people outside the organization but co-workers and internal customers as well. Career success depends on building strong relationships with both internal and external customers and a reputation for responsiveness and quality service.
Just ensure that service and responses are delivered in a timely fashion! We do, as Pritchett says, live in an impatient world. Organizations, then, must accelerate. Workers must operate with a sense of urgency. These are raw survival instincts at work. To survive: speed up. To be successful, organizations must emphasize action: cover ground quickly, eliminate excess baggage, abandon outmoded practices, decentralize, and delegate decision-making power. There really is no room for slow adjustment to change. Valuable employees are those who push the process of change along.
But change brings ambiguity and uncertainty!
Fine. As Pritchett advises, accept it, and manage your own morale! Workers need to realize that placing their morale in someone else's hands disempowers them and that ambiguity may, in fact, be the in the best interest of their career.
Sure, they will be faced with new expectations, shifting priorities, different reporting relationships, vague job descriptions...
Workers need to act upbeat, accept change, and create clarity for themselves-to set priorities, meet deadlines, chase down needed information, show initiative and an ability to improvise. They need to work as though they are in business for themselves.
So what does that mean?
Traditional hierarchies are flattening out. Organizations want to get closer to customers and clients, and are decentralizing business units. The result? Mini-enterprises or self-contained work groups that operate more independently. Employees will need to assume more responsibility for the success of the entire enterprise and consider personally how they can help cut costs, improve productivity, and innovate.
In other words, as hierarchies collapse, responsibility, power, and authority are being pushed to the lower levels. Self-contained work teams must stand accountable for their collective results. Accountability implies thinking in broad terms, considering the larger picture, and considering outcomes. Workers must streamline their approach to economize time, energy, and other resources.
Broad thinking and innovation take brains: it doesn't take long for skills and knowledge to become outmoded in a rapidly changing world-a world that takes no pity on those who are lazy about learning. Workers need to stay in school in order to retool themselves and to keep up with the latest knowledge. Their future employability depends on up-to-date credentials, the latest skills, and the most recent developments in their chosen field. Home study, reading, attending workshops and seminars, volunteering for understudy or apprenticeship programs, asking for learning opportunities-all of these should become "habits".
Lifelong learning implies continuous improvement. Yes, and according to Pritchett, it's the best insurance for both employees' careers and for organizations. How? It is the relentless quest for a better way, for high quality craftsmanship, for daily perfection. Continuous improvement-and this is not just limited to learning, either-may be gradual, but in the long run, it adds up to a competitive advantage.
Employees also need to learn not to rely solely on their reputation anymore: the world is changing too quickly. Employees must then strive to upgrade their job performance-response time, quality, cost control, and customer service-on an ongoing basis.
Improving job performance also means building a reputation as a problem solver. Employees must learn to take care of problems, not point them out. By searching beyond themselves, for solutions, they disempower themselves and lose the ability to find workable solutions. The pro-active solution, according to Pritchett, is for employees to assume ownership of problems and to allow the solutions to start with them.
To summarize, change is inevitable, and there is little, if anything, organizations can do to stop it. The best they can do is adapt and to alter their expectations-preferably before they have to. Some are fortunate enough to scramble and adjust when push comes to shove. As to the rest? Well, just remember the dinosaurs...

Some good points but a nasty overtone.......2005-04-22
This book does mention some valid points about taking control of your own career. But it fails to acknowledge what motivates us to work and has a horrible over tone that preys on the fear culture you find during redundancies. I'd look elsewhere for motivation, somewhere that tells you how to be more confident rather than "do this or else".
Recreating Your Job.......2002-02-16
As a manager in a highly competitive service industry, I could not deliver a better message to my staff than this short, highly readable "who's in charge of your life" script for the entrepeneur in all of us.
Adaptability, accountability, and the pure joy of realizing your version of yourself in this age of the "chaos theory" is in there. A fun, inspiring, recharging read.
A good example of a book that should be burnedý........2002-01-29
Let's cut to the chase. The message of this book is quite simple:
Change your current attitude and increase your productivity so that you will ad value to your company in the long run. In other words, all for the benefit of us (managers, CEOs, Bill Gates, etc.) at the expense of you, the employee (the tried and true `profits over people' mentality rears its ugly head once again in corporate America). If the events of September 11 or the recent Enron affair haven't yet taught us that money and misguided "motivation" should NOT be the primary goals in life, I don't know what will.
The inhuman workplace.......2002-01-26
This book should be titled "Chicken Soup For The Displaced Worker." With one sticking point: You get more depressed after you read it. If anyone hands you this book, tell them no thanks. I strongly agree with the reviewers who said that this is a book for clueless managers looking to jump on meaningless trends.

It touches the heart of every dieter.......2001-12-20
When I bought the book I thought it would talk about healthy food & healthy eating habits. The book was more than that since it relates eating with self-confedence & dealing with problems, which solved the question I have always been asking myself :"why am eating if I'm not hungery?".
It touched me...softly.......2000-06-19
I have read many books on overeating and body acceptance over the years, but this is the best! After just reviewing a few pages, I was hooked. She was talking to me...about me.. and I felt a connection like never before. This book put me in touch with feelings I haven't felt in years and have been avoiding by using food to quiet all the noise.....and my hungers are VERY LOUD. Thank you...thank you..for your insight. This book nurtured me!

She was talking to me...about me.. and I felt a connection like never before. This book put me in touch with feelings I haven't felt in years and have been avoiding by using food to quiet all the noise.....and my hungers are VERY LOUD. Thank you...thank you..for your insight. This book nurtured me!

A Habit Worth Keeping.......2007-04-08
Changing Habits is an extraordinary book. It introduces us to three young women from different backgrounds, Kathleen, Angelina, and Joanna, and their journey through the convent and later life outside the convent. Told through their eyes, each chapter features one of the girls experiences and how it affects their life in the convent and eventually the women they become.
When I picked up the book, I didn't know how wrapped up in the story I would get. Each girl had their own story to tell and how their personal struggles affected themselves and their faith. I didn't know much about the Catholic Order, but with reading this book, I got information that was both interesting and not overwhelming. This book touched me in ways that most books can't even begin to match. It's a wonderful book that will make you think differently and look at your life in a whole new light.
A must read for anyone looking for a heartwarming and touching book!
I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE INTERESTING.......2006-01-24
It is one of the best books I have read of Debbie Macomber's. The three girls and their stories kept me up all night reading.
One of the Best Books I've Read.......2005-10-30
I absolutely loved this book and the author's style of writing. It was the first book I read by her but it won't be the last. In my opinion, this author works very hard to make her characters believable and interesting. Great book.
what a waste of time.......2005-10-06
Did I read the same book? I wish I could have those hours back. Perhaps this is not my genre - I read it because it was the choice of my book group. I'm sure I'll never read another book by this author.
Why didn't I like this book? It was sooooooo predictable after about 50 pages. And the writing was very bland and uninteresting.
Interesting premise - poorly written and developed.......2005-06-03
Had there been an in-depth treatment of the motives, situations, and dispositions of the four characters, the premise of this novel could have been intriguing. Unfortunately, the characters are quite one-dimensional, and the situations not treated with any depth. The general effect is of a poor play.
The attraction to convent life is peripheral in all of the subjects, and they do not ultimately confront true convictions or their own motives. The odd effect is of women in young adulthood (all leave the convent while still in their twenties) who are shaken by confronting troubling situations, common in some form to any adult life, and who find some vague solution merely by departing from convent life. The two who marry seem childish and impulsive in the choice (one drawn by a handsome face and the idea that she's got the man to return to church, the other suddenly contemplating marriage to her spiritual advisor, who cannot deal with having a homosexual priest in his parish) - though, at the end, there is a sense of 'happily ever after, one as Catholic, the other renegade.'
Though Macomber writes of an era when convent life was in tumult, neither the overall situation nor a directly related conflict in the lives of the Sisters is treated. The Sister who is unjustly accused of 'doctoring the books' for her own advantage, and the other who blames herself for a student's having a back alley abortion, seem to be running from their first look at tragic but common parts of life. The reader seems to be told that the Sisters are departing from an unfair Church, yet incidents such as these are never developed as quite common paths to mature knowledge of oneself.
The 'fudged' ending has no resolution or purpose. We learn that they have no regret for having been nuns, yet still cannot see what drew them to the life or how leaving was the answer to their problems.
The deficiencies in plot, theme (if indeed there is one), and characterisation are all the more unfortunate because a premise such as this could have been fascinating. The potential for reflecting history, exploring spiritual and psychological aspects, and treating of the complexity of human nature was ignored. We are left with one-dimensional characters who cannot even consider the larger picture of their own community.

The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical
ASIN: 1590527402
Release Date: 2007-01-16 |
Book Description
You’ve been called adrenaline junkie, thrill seeker, permanently out of the box, difficult, and just plain crazy.
And mostly, it’s true. Whether you show your radical streak in extreme sports, supercharged business ventures, or high risk relationships, you have a full-blown danger habit. As far as you can tell, you were born with it. And honestly, you wouldn’t have it any other way…
Except when your danger habit betrays you. Then your craving for adventure turns into a magnet for disaster. You leave a trail of broken commitments and unwise decisions. You get trapped in stupid addictions. You hurt the ones you love. And you end up feeling like a big mistake.
But what if you were created extreme for a purpose?
What if the radical faith God has in mind for you doesn’t have to come with a dark side? What if it actually turned out to be your ultimate rush?
In his fast-paced book, The Danger Habit, surfer and lifelong adventurer Mike Barrett explores the mindset of born radicals and the promise of what he calls “adventure faith.” He combines personal story telling, raw honesty, and biblical wisdom in a reading experience that will capture your imagination and motivate you to reach for your huge life mission in Christ.
Story Behind the Book
“I caused significant pain to my own wife and kids while struggling with an addiction to risk, the pursuit of extreme sports, and an overwhelming feeling of being bored with many Christians and standard church life. My epiphany came a number of years ago when God broke through it all and showed me how ‘propped up’ my life was without His real presence and power. In the end, we sold our suburban home, moved to the Oregon Coast , and started a ministry to surfers. Countless lives were changed; my wife and I even became pastors. Once dead to the life I had pursued, God gave me back an adventure I could never have previously dared hope for.” –Mike Barrett
Customer Reviews:
Read The Danger Habit If You Are Radical.......2007-07-05
If you are a risk taker and adrenaline junkie (the author is a surfer and rock climber) and could use some soul food, this book is for you. Mike Barrett has done a great job of sharing his Christian faith with the reader in a unique and refreshing way. The book's message is based on the idea that many people (like this reader) live their lives in ways that don't realize their incredible potential to serve the Lord. It's essentially a calling to the unconventional Christian. In his book, Barrett calls on us to take our "radical" energy and put it towards spiritual fuilfillment instead of destructive behaviour that often leads risk takers to personal trouble.
Barrett reveals much about his personal life experiences and his own struggles with his radical tendencies. And unlike evangelical preachers of whom he is suspicious, his approach is one of encouragement stressing that God wants for us to do well with our lives and to make them meaningful. Many of his stories are wonderful accounts that are entertaining, humorous, even sad, but mostly inspirational. The bottom line is that this book is powerful due to Barret's down-to-earth approach to Christianity and the ovearll tone of his message.
Excellent Gift Book.......2007-04-16
The sheer transparency of the author created an atmosphere where I could be honest with myself and evaluate the fights I pick.
This is a great book whether you consider yourself to be radical or not. Each of us has a little bit of "RADICALNESS" inside, though it expresses itself differently. A good reminder that this is in us for a purpose.
This book makes an excellent gift. Easy to read, thought provoking and even ADD people will love it!
Good Book.......2007-03-21
I thought it might be cheezy. It wasn't.
I found it insightful, encouraging and humbling. The author did a great job of explaining both the adrenaline junkie personality as well as the pitfalls and potential traps we often find ourselves in.
I especially liked the author's strategy for redirecting one's need to fight, by showing how the most important things worth fighting for are faith, family, and one's "neighbor".
The section on "falling down" was a good addition. This personality type tends to make a lot of mistakes which can often cause self defeatism. We get our image wrapped up in what we think God thinks about our failures. By understanding that God isn't surprised by our outcomes, it helps us get back up again, minus the self loathing.
The chapters on "realistic expectations" and "finishing well" were also well done and ended the book with encouragement.
At times the author seemed to jump around a bit and his intense personality comes through. However, that's what allowed me to read the whole thing in one sitting. His ADD and my ADD fit like a chain and sprocket.
I was pleasantly surprised and recommend the book to anyone who is an adrenaline junkie, lives with one, is on a team with one, or simply wants to understand one.
Christianity is not tame.......2007-03-20
There's nothing safe about Christianity, and the history of the faith is riddled with people who gambled everything on the Gospel. Of the twelve apostles, only one died of natural causes, annd he had a long and terrifying road beforehand. All the others died unpleasant deaths in faraway countries. Church history is full of men and women like Joan of Arc, Francis of Assisi, and Fr. Damien of Molokai. While I'm no huge fan of the Protestant Reformation, the men who sparked it were anything but staid. Martin Luther was a walking ball of fire with a loud mouth and a short fuse, and John Calvin stood stern and immovable like a rock at the top of a waterfall.
Sure, there's a place for the stolid, traditional Christian who plugs away at a life of faith, but in our time, we've made not rocking the boat into a virtue. We tend to look at Christian radicals as Kool-aid guzzlers or snake-oil salesmen. We are distrustful of anybody who wants to color outside the lines, figuring that extremism probably equals faulty theology, and certainly makes one dangerous.
In this book, Mike Barrett dispels the myth that there's no place in the Body of Christ for the extreme. Mike is no stranger to risky behavior, and makes no bones about the damage that adrenaline addiction can do to not only the junkie but his friends and family. With the experience to back it up, Mike shows how that same love of danger can be a powerful instrument in the Lord's toolbox. The Church would be a much lesser body had it not been fueled by the men and women whose call was to go beyond the traditional and the safe. To carry the Gospel into distant places, to speak up against the principalities and powers, or just to reach out to the sort of undesirables that Jesus sought out, requires the same spirit of fearlessness that drives one to climb mountains or ride waves.
For Christians who want to turn their love of danger into service to the Lord, The Danger Habit is like a breath of fresh air. It's a call to turn what could be a liability to an individual into an asset for God. If you're the sort of person who wants to walk with God on the wild side, this book may change your whole perspective on your faith.

I spent my college and early marital years rock climbing, extreme skiing and spelunking... I totally resonated with Mike Barrett's experiences and stories. More profoundly-- he gave folks like us permission to be who we are, take it to a Godward level, and be responsible for the risks of such lifestyles. Thanks for being real Mike.

Memoir Convent School Life.......2007-08-11
"Changing Habits" A Memoir of the Society of the Sacred Heart" was written in 1988 by V V Harrison. In this vivid memoir and compelling history, the author takes us into the exclusive world of the Society of the Sacred Heart with both the humor and the understanding of one who has been there. Through the recollections of her own days at Eden Hall, she paints a picture of life behind the iron gates; of graceful "penguin-like" nuns on ice skates ~~ fluted white bonnets bobbing in unison; of stony rules of silence; and of young women's fervent prayers that had nothing to do with being holy! She also reveals the rich, intellectually demanding and fascinating traditions that have carried the Society through its unique history from 1800 to the present. Founded in the midst of the violent French Revolution, the Society of the Sacred Heart spread to six continents by 1908 and became one of the most prestigious religious congregations of nuns in the Catholic Church. Superbly educating daughters of both the wealthy and the poor to go into the world with "a man's mind and a woman's heart", the Sacred Heart has graduated such disparate women as Vivien Leigh, Maureen O'Sullivan, Yoko Ono, Susan Saint James, Michiko Shoda (Crown Princess of Japan) and the Kennedy women. But when the edicts of Vatican II threw open the doors of the Catholic Church to the 20th century, they sowed seeds of disorder throughout the Society. The call for renewal, to become attuned to the world of today, turned the congregation upside down. Lives that had been restrained by the rule of cloister and the monastic traditions of the past were not easily adaptable to the freedom of the new edicts. The nuns suffered an unplanned- for defection from their ranks and many of their well-known and exclusive academies were forced to close. In 1988, more than 20 years after having shed their traditional habits and adjusting to the new ways of the Church, the modern Sisters have re-evaluated and rebuilt the very foundations of their lives. "Changing Habits" is an interesting journey from the traditional "Convent of the Sacred Heart School" that the author attended,to the modern experience of both students and nuns today. Gone are the nuns in their beautiful traditional religious habits ~~ long gone are the days when they were known as "Mothers" in those beautiful mansion schools that educated the wealthy elite. There are several great photos from the author's days at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, and of the Madames of the Sacred Heart in their elegant Traditional habits to the modified habits of the 60's to no habits at all today. Also included are pictures of other Mansions used as Convent schools around the world. "Changing Habits" is the story of how the absolute strictures of one religious congregation of nuns dissolved and dramatically affected a worldwide community of 7,000 nuns on five continents ~~ as well as the many generations of women whose lives these nuns had touched deeply. "Changing Habits" recreates the mysterious world inside an exclusive convent school ~ a world gone forever. If you have ever been curious about life behind the convent walls, this book will answer that curiosity.
Changing Habits: A Memoir of the society of the Sacred heart.......2002-01-26
It was a way of seeing thru the eyes of a Child of the Sacred Heart. Being a male I would never be able to experience what it would be like to attend a Convent of the Sacred Heart School. Beautiful mansions around the world that serve as boarding schools. V.V. brings life to the Society of the Sacred Heart, the nuns who educated the elite women in society to become leaders of justice and human rights. Its an interesting journey she takes you on from the traditional "Convent of the Sacred Heart school" that she attended,to the modern experience of both students and Sisters today, which has updated it self to the point of no traditons, as in the early days. Gone are the nuns in the beautiful habit, now you dont know if your talking to a nun or a lay person. They seldom use their honored title of Sister, and long gone are the days when they were known as "Mothers" in these beautiful mansion schools that educated the wealthy elite. Very interesting journey for any former Catholic school child or those interested in what a bording school experience- run by nuns was like. Great pictures from her days at Torresdale, Pa Convent of the Sacred Heart, and of the Mothers of the Sacred Heart in the elegant Traditional habit to the modified habit of the 60's to no habits. Pictures of other Mansions used as Convent schools around the world like the famous New York City school. The book takes the reader from the origins of the order by foundress St. Madeline Sophie Barat to the coming of America.

Great book for people who spend most of their days caring for others!.......2006-03-03
This book is great for those of us who spend our days caring for others-young and old alike. People who are always focused on caring for the needs of others need to be reminded of how important their own physical needs are and how important it is to develop a routine to take care of themselves so they will be able to care for others. If our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, then we have been charged with the upkeep of those same temples. This book does a good job of reminding us of that! Great reading and definitely one I will recommend to all my friends-especially mothers with kids at home!
A Makeover For My Spirit.......2006-02-14
I was a divorced mother with two pre-schoolers, overweight and unhappy with my job. Then I got breast cancer. I'm okay now that the treatment is over. I figure it's time for an extreme makeover. So, I heard about Changing Habits from the People's Pharmacy Radio Show and I love it. I read it over and over again to remind me how much control I really have. Debbie's words are so inspiring and real. I don't feel like a victim or act like one anymore. My children are happier, I lost a dress size and my job isn't so bad - at least I have one. Changing Habits really did change my life.
It's possible to take care of yourself first........2005-11-07
Changing Habits is the ideal book for people who don't have enough hours in the day. We superwomen often forget to add ourselves to the To Do list. This book offers a sensible plan to take care of yourself first so that you have the energy and stamina to take care of everyone and everything else in your busy life.
It touched me!.......2005-11-02
This book is a MUST for all parents, children, siblings, teachers, friends and spouses. Debbie talks right to you, as if she know what you're thinking.
She stresses how important it is to take care of ourselves, and enjoy ourselves in the processs. I loved the section on how to make housecleaning spiritual (and fun).
I will buy this book as a gift for a friend who just had her first child.
