5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners to experts!.......2005-11-03

This is a super set to learn from and refer back to! If you're a beginner - check it out! There's so much to learn from it!

5 out of 5 stars must have for any lamp worker.......2005-08-04

this set is the best/ most information i have seen for learning to lampwork. packed with information it covers most techniques and even guides the beginner on how to set up a studio, great buy, worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars The best book in its class.......2003-12-30

If you could have only one book, it would be wise to consider this one. I have been in this industry many years and this is by far the best book I have seen out there.

2 out of 5 stars It's Just OKAY!.......2003-12-24

To the naive public this book is great! Riddled with typos and inconsistant captions this book is not ideal for understanding formal flameworking. The book includes information about the masters and their techniques but trivializes their skill by including no-names and wanna-be's along side. A good amount of important technical information is provided, but through a string of often choppy inconsistant paragraph fragments. This is an excellent PICTURE BOOK leaving a lot to be desired from the academic artisan. Is a great reference for suppliers. In many cases the information falls short of being cohesive and understandable. Recommended for the glass-goer. Recommended for the amateur glassblower (for inspiration). Has popular appeal void of substance.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing.......2003-01-20

It should get more stars than five, the history of lampworking portion of the book is almost worth the price of the book itself. The history portion is only a small portion of the set. I have been doing lampworking for about 3 years now and I search the internet for anything reguarding lampworking often and this book set has tons of stuff I have never seen. excellent.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Anger can be one of the most frustrating emotions, carrying us headlong away from ourselves and depositing us into separation and dismay. Vietnamese monk and world teacher Thich Nhat Hanh tackles this most difficult of emotions in Anger. A master at putting complex ideas into simple, colorful packages, Nhat Hanh tells us that, fundamentally, to be angry is to suffer, and that it is our responsibility to alleviate our own suffering. The way to do this is not to fight our emotions or to "let it all out" but to transform ourselves through mindfulness. Emphasizing our basic interdependence, he teaches us how to help others through deep listening and how to water the positive seeds in those around us while starving the negative seeds. Serious though lighthearted, Anger is a handbook not only for transforming anger but for living each moment beautifully. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

The Nobel Peace Prize nominee and internationally bestselling author shares the tools and power for overcoming anger.

"Thich Nhat Hanh is a holy man, for he is humble and devout. He is a scholar of immense intellectual capacity. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity."
-Martin Luther King, Jr., in nominating Thich Nhat Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize

It was under the bodhi tree in India twenty-five centuries ago that Buddha achieved the insight that three states of mind were the source of all our unhappiness: ignorance, obsessive desire, and anger. All are equally difficult, but in one instant of anger, lives can be ruined, and our spiritual development can be destroyed. Twenty-five hundred years after the Buddha's enlightenment, medical science tells us that the Buddha was right: anger can also ruin our health. It is one of the most powerful emotions and one of the most difficult to change.

Thich Nhat Hanh offers a fresh perspective on taking care of our anger as we would take care of a crying baby-picking it up, talking quietly to it, probing for what is making the baby cry. Laced with stories and techniques, Anger offers a wise and loving look at transforming anger into peace and for bringing harmony and healing to all the areas and relationships in our lives that have been affected by anger.

4 out of 5 stars The Miracle of Mindfulness applied to Anger.......2007-08-03

This book is well written, and it is sometimes necessarily repetitive (Yes I wrote necessarily) in order to stress the point that to be able to deal with the habit energy released by anger, the energy of mindfulness has to be generated by the practitioner which will lovingly take care of anger.
I can see why some people have written mixed reviews on this book. However, Zen is not meant to be idealized or understood intellectually, it is direct experience which provides the true understanding of Zen. When a Zen master is asked what it is that Zen practitioners do differently from others he is likely to say "well..when we are hungry we eat, when we are tired we sleep, when we are thirsty we drink water." Mindfulness is doing whatever ordinary task we have at hand with all of our hearts. That's the practice taugth in this book.

This is a book for those who already practice the art of mindful living and wish to strenghthen their mindfulness in a way that will bring home the Pure Land for him/herself and therefore his/her loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars speaking to the heart.......2007-05-10

Simple...breath, walk, do something else, other than be angry...stop & listen to your body, to others while holding your anger, not avoiding it or stuffing it up. Thich Nhat Hanh is a great teacher & some words of wisdom need repeating over & over again to remind us, to be mindful.

5 out of 5 stars The "mindful" way..........2007-04-28

As someone who has dealt with anger and depression, I read this book with great interest. I have always been interested in the traditional East Asian philosophies and methods of healing. While I don't subscribe to everything suggested in this book, I do think that American medicine and psychotherapy could benifit from incorporating a more spiritual approach.

We in America have advanced all kinds of drugs that can help people with anger and depession to get thier chemicals and hormones back on track, but we don't always offer people a more spiritual method of coping. What I think is needed is a thoughtful blending of Eastern and Western ideas.

Thich Nhat Hanh gives one a good insight into the Buddhist or more "mindful" way. I think that anyone that struggles with anger or depression (which is really anger turned inward), may take something useful from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Falling in love with "Anger".......2007-04-01

This book is a gem. Among many good qualities, it continued to deepen my understanding and compassion for that sensation we experience that we call "anger". The meditation in the back of the book is beautiful, as is much of Thich Nhat Hahn's writing. I read it to my yoga classes during relaxation at the end, and read it before bed often to sweetly and softly connect to this "human experience."

5 out of 5 stars a book to shape the world.......2007-03-30

if everyone read this book, I think our world would be a very differant place.

its not a "self help book" its an explination of how the world works... how it should work, and how we can improve it by imporving ourselves.

He talks about how mindfulness and self awareness can lead to better personal relations, and how how we talk to eachother, and what we listen to and watch and take in, can affect ourselves and our relationships.

I started reading this book because I was looking for a book on Buddhism, and someone had recomended Thich Nhat Hanh to me I believe... and since then I've read it over and over because it has come to mean so much to me. I am trying very hard to take Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings to heart, and since I've done that, I think I've become a much more healthy and happy person. I've started to read other books he has written too, all I've savored any enjoyed.

I highly recomend this book, there no better investment for your $10. hehe

Beadmaker and author Corina Tettinger says she wanted Passing the Flame to bring the teacher into your house. Tettingers chatty writing style gives the reader that teacher effect, making the book very user-friendly. The instructions are easy to understand, and colorful photos throughout the book provide a visual feast. Photos show every step of the beadmaking process in detail, including incorporating it into jewelry. The format of the book makes it easy to keep open on the workbench while following along and exploring techniques. In her foreword, Tettinger asks Are you going to learn everything there is to know about beadmaking in this book? She answers, Hell no. Tettingers designs are based on techniques that have been used for centuries mainly dots and lines. Its her precision, color choices, and particular combinations of these techniques that make her work unique. Because her techniques are both basic and innovative, a beginning beadmaker will get a good foundation with Tettingers book, and one with more experience will find plenty of new ideas and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars PASSING THE FLAME - LEARN HOW TO MAKE GLASS BEADS.......2007-03-25

A fantastic book. The first pages show Corina's progression as an artist.
From her beginner beads, to her now advanced beads. Lots of color photos.
Shows how to make a round bead. How to make a floral, an encased frog bead,
and more.

An easy to read book with step by step instructions. Talking about color combinations in glass, dot work, stringer control and how to pull your own stringer. Corina is a master artist and this book shares her knowledge with everyone. A great how to book that will make even the most complicated bead designs seem attainable.

I really loved reading this book, it's a great resource for lampwork artists. Funny, with lots of helpful hints and beautiful inspiring
photos of Corina's lampwork beads.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Principles of Fire Behavior.......2006-03-14

The book has never heard of "laymans" terms, so be prepared for some tough reading. Our teachers feel we should burn it but it is the ONLY book written for the course material.

5 out of 5 stars Principles of Fire Behaviour.......2005-01-09

As the first word states in the title, the book offers a wide overview on fire behaviour. Personaly the book represented the introduction to the Heat Transfer Class during the MSc in Fire Safety Enginnering at UUJ. Providing me with the necessary fundamentals it was a great help to approch further studies of scientific papers.
The book is very well written. It is kept to a simple level for the obvious purpose of providing the student with basic undestanding of complicated issues. From my personal point of view, the simplicity and fluidity of the book are an huge advantage of the work itself, at least among all those which I have came accross.
Strongly advised for those who are approching a fire enginnering degree and also for those professional which need a mental stimulus for solving fire engineering issues. Very interesting: Ignition, Radiation, Fire Behavior, Plume Behavior and the articles collection of fire investigation at the end of the book.

1 out of 5 stars lacks fundamental explinations.......2004-11-04

Being in the fire service for nearly 10 years and an instructor, this book does well for individuals with a decent level of fire knowledge. However, for the fundamental student or beginner fire fighter, this book lacks serious explinations of the basic concepts. This book has done nothing but confuse students with it's constant bombardment of calculations without providing clear explinations.
Outside sources are constantly used to supliment what this book lacks.
If it's used for a begining Fire Engineering or as a suppliment book for Fire Behavior, I would recommend it. But the lack of the fundamentals that it mystically tries to build on, is extremely frustrating and lacks any sort of foundation.
Advanced levels - I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5
Beginner levels - I'd give it a 1 out of 5

5 out of 5 stars I recommend this book for entry level fire related people!.......2001-06-19

I recommend this book for those who want to start studying the reality of fire behavior. This is really well-written book! The first description of candle flame is very interesting. You can work the flame behavior experiment from his description. It's fun!

4 out of 5 stars A thorough, quantitative look at fire and flame science.......1998-11-27

The book does a thorough job of teaching fire science and behavior. Numerous example calculations are given to demonstrate the principles behind different types of flame creation and propagation. This would be a good book for both self study and as a companion guide to a fire science class.

5 out of 5 stars Drop Site Massacre.......2007-09-17

The third part of the tragedy known as the Horus Heresy. The book itself is well done, though, not as well in my opinion as the previous two books ( Horus Rising (The Horus Heresy)and False Gods: The Heresy Takes Root (The Horus Heresy) ) but it's stellar none the less.
It's a book that starts sad and ends tragic. The tone of the book at first seemed to be almost to dark even for WH40K but the heroism of varies Astarte's and zealotry of the emerging Emperor worshiping cult breaks up the darkness a bit.
I've always been a fan of Chaos as a player of the table top game but I couldn't help but root for the Space Marines during the last 3rd of the book, especially Loken and Targaddon.
It's a great book and moves quickly through most of the book with only a few peppered parts of exposition.
My concern about the series though is now we get 3 or 4 more books of nothing to actually further the story beyond Istvaan III/IV. The Flight of Eisenstein my further the story somewhat but I haven't read it yet. The next couple books will be about what happens to varies chapters as the Heresy explodes.
So let's hope that Games Workshop moves past it's aversion to discussing the Emperor enough to let us read about the final battle between Horus and the Emperor eventually.

5 Stars though for a wonderful book, 5 stars to the previous authors for making this series one of the best I've read in years from any IP (with the exception of The Song of Ice and fire by George RR Martin).
I look forward to all the rest.

Thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Warhammer 40,000 Book EVER.......2007-05-11

This book is an incredible book written by an incredible author, who has written some of my favorate books (The Grey Knights series) and has out done even these with "Galaxy in Flames". The book shows the Horus Heresy through a cast of well characterised people (Lucius, Sinderman, and Tarvits are my favorates). The action, storyline, and suspense have been layed out in a fashion that kept me reading wondering what would happen next, even though I have already learned about the Horus Heresy. The feeling you get when you read the parts where people die isn't "Ew, why did he put so much blood here!", it's "YEAH, GO LOKEN, KILL THAT STUPID TRAITOR!!!!!". Do not get me wrong though, this book is not just violence and mean bad guys, the story expertly brings this event to life with great story line and wonderful detail. I RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERY LAST LIVING THING ON THE PLANET EARTH!

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-04-10

I wasn't expecting this to turn out as well as the previous two books due to having just finished the Soul Drinker Omnibus and not being a huge Ben Counter fan. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a fine writer, but just something doesn't quite click with me. Anyways, I was very impressed with this work and highly recommend it to others.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Warhammer 40K novel!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-27

Like alot of Ben counter's books this one is fast paced, with lots of action while still crafting an excellent story line. The book even manages to hold your attention during non action sequences, with really good character development that drives an awesome story along, right to a stellar climax.

5 out of 5 stars The Hours Heresy Mythos expands.......2007-02-28

This novel chronicles the brutal opening conflicts of the 'Horus Heresy', an event which has unending repurcussions for humanity within the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Ben Counter authors the third installment of the series, and from the opening scenes one can sense the change that has seeped through the Great Crusade.

The whole undertaking has come to a critical turning point. The human face of the crusade, in the form of administrators and the civilian-type 'rememberancers' attactched to the expedition fleet exist in the shadows of the Astartes that once fought singularly to protect them. Seeds of division and distrust are sown amongst the superhuman Astartes themselves. Tension builds throughout the expedition, and the central characters introduced in the previous installments find themselves burdened with facing up with their beliefs and loyalties.

Action is laced throughout the pages, and it is furiously paced (typical of Counter's forays into this universe). Most notably, some Space Marines in this are given unmistakeably human layers; an unusual concession in most tales in this Mythos. The story streams along, and the ideals and imagery of the young Imperium makes for heady Science Fiction. This series focuses on the core 'Future History' of the Warhammer 40,000 universe- the Horus Heresy- a rich Mythos in its own right. This
novel in particular breathes life into a host of seminal characters, while the conflicts are unremittingly savage and moving.

Not having read a Black Library publication in recent months, I was slightly sceptical about enjoying this read. But I found (over the two days I spread it over) that one could not help accelerating from a third way through the novel, while being enthralled in the process. Ben Counter writes of battles furiously, and I found that the visual qualities of these depictions snuck up on me- they were quite vivid and entertaining like few authors can craft.

I have played a single Warhammer 40,000 game and pledged not to touch it again. One does not have to enjoy playing the Warhammer games, because this fiction is more than just 'background filler' or 'fluff' to add atmosphere to a tabletop match. However, I believe this Mythos holds great promise for science fiction readers from all circles. It has dizzying scope; shot through with gripping 'histories' of events and figures, and echoes many classical myths, from a number of cultures.

Readers of the previous installments will not be disappointed; curious minds new to the series will find much entertainment.

'Galaxy in Flames' is probably the stand out publication Black Library has to offer at present, and a fitting example of what the Galaxy of the 41st millenium has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars THE ETERNAL FLAME (THE GREAT TREE OF AVALON, BOOK 3).......2007-02-12

This is the last in a trilogy about the saving of Avalon by three of its long time defenders. Tamwyn, grandson of Merlin, must travel by a secret route to the very stars to save the true source of magic. Scree, the eagleman must lead his people to fight in the war of to save Avalon. Lastly, Elli, a brave young priestess must conquer an evil sorcerer in a realm of complete darkness, Shadowroot. Together they must overcome all the odds in order to save Avalon, especially at the final battle in Mudroot.

The story keeps you turning page after page with anticipation to discover just what will happen next to each character. Their adventures are spellbinding, gripping, and exciting and filled with vibrant descriptions of the characters, scenery and emotions. To truly appreciate the third book in this trilogy reading the first two, CHILD OF THE DARK PROPHECY (The Great Tree of Avalon, Book 1) SHADOWS ON THE STARS (The Great Tree of Avalon, Book 2) will provide a greater insight overall. Also reading T. A. Barron's MERLIN SERIES will enrich your total reading experience.

After this novel, I sincerely hope that T. A. Barron expands and writes an Arthurian series about Merlin and the rest of the earthbound characters from these novels. I'm sure this author could lend some new twists and turns to an old tradtional favorite!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Ending, to A Great Trilogy.......2006-12-05

Some book series end with a disappointment, or cliffhanger. Some books end with a poorly written ending, or one that does not make sense. That, however, is not the case with this book. The Great Tree of Avalon: The Eternal Flame is a great ending to a great series. The book is the final installment of the trilogy, and follows the story of the three separate paths that each character takes in the book. It follows the original path of Tamwyn as he makes his way up to the upper branches, and stars beyond of the Great Tree. As well as following the story of Tamwyn, this book also follows the stories of Eli as she makes her way into the darkest reaches of Shadowroot, to destroy the crystal of Vagelano. On top of those two stories, this book also follows a third. The journey of Scree as he makes his way back to his native land, to band together his kinsmen for the fight for Avalon.

This book is the best in the trilogy in my opinion. It excellently wraps together all of the main storylines, as well as a few other minor storylines that are less important. There are no plot holes, as far as I can tell, and everything is perfectly wrapped together. This final chapter of the trilogy also has many more twists and turns, and unexpected surprises than the other two. Along with being a very complete novel, this book is also very well written. There are no unimportant characters. Every character in the entire book has a significant part to play. Each character also has their own personality, which other authors often fail to do. This book is also very imaginative. The names of the made-up lands, are very believable and well thought up. The entire book is extremely descriptive, and as a whole, paints a very good picture of the land of Avalon. There is not a single vague scenario in the entire book.

This is a hard book to just pick up and start reading. The reason for that is that this is the last book in a trilogy, which is a spin off of a previous five book series. It would be very advisable to read the initial Lost Years of Merlin series, before reading this trilogy. Although it is possible to pick up in the middle, it is hard, and you will more than likely find yourself lost. This book is also listed as a children's book, but it is by no means. Although this book is described to be for a younger audience, there is nothing childish about it. This book contains everything a good epic/ fantasy story should have. It has a good plot, descriptive battle scenes, a very good description of the land, and older characters. This isn't just another story of kids going off to save the world. There is much more detail to this, and for that reason, it is really readable by anyone.

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (11/06)

Fans of the Trilogy "The Great Tree of Avalon" have been eagerly awaiting the final installment. They need wait no longer for only their imaginations could have prepared them for the newest adventure in "The Eternal Flame." Now that the conquest of Avalon "the world between all worlds" is at hand, the next step is to conquer Earth.

Eli and Nuic know the crystal must be destroyed. They head to the Lost City on their mission. Elves, humans, eaglefolk, and tree spirits must form an alliance to do battle against Rhita Gawr and his ogres, trolls, and immortal dragons. This is a battle between good and evil; it's gory, brutal, and fierce.

This book has it all -- action, adventure, and humor. Reading this book becomes an adventure in itself. You almost feel as though you are there in the midst of the action. The characters jump off the page and lead you through the battle to save earth. The cover is perfect for this book. It hints at dark secrets inside. The print is a nice size. This book is well written; however it was a little difficult to read without having read the first two books, which I intend to do. I foresee a revisit to Avalon in the future. I recommend "The Eternal Flame" to those that enjoy fantasy and science fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Grand, but not a finale, I hope.......2006-10-26

T.A. Barron left readers with a bundle of unanswered questions at the end of book two in the Great Tree series. In the final installment He answers many of them, provides a terrific finale and leaves the door open a crack for further visits to Avalon. There are an immense and wonderful number of actions that flesh out the events in this final book. As you read, expect to be totally immersed in the action. Plan to be deeply saddened as one character dies and discomfited as another doesn't. Expect to be very surprised as Batty Lad and Hennie the Hoolah reappear and one of them turns out to be much more than they appear. Most of all, expect to enjoy a wonderful and extremely well written conclusion to the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Fantasy Adventure!.......2006-10-21

Right up there with the very best of J.R.R. Tolkien, this book (and this trilogy) has everything any fantasy reader could want. I gulped this book down instantly, and now I've started a second read. There's just so much adventure, humor, and rich meaning in this book! This is T.A. Barron's best ever -- and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. (My vote is a return to Avalon!)

The premise of Umberto Eco's The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana, may strike some readers as laughably unpromising, and others as breathtakingly rich. A sixty-ish Milanese antiquarian bookseller nicknamed Yambo suffers a stroke and loses his memory of everything but the words he has read: poems, scenes from novels, miscellaneous quotations. His wife Paola fills in the bare essentials of his family history, but in order to trigger original memories, Yambo retreats alone to his ancestral home at Solara, a large country house with an improbably intact collection of family papers, books, gramophone records, and photographs. The house is a museum of Yambo's childhood, conventiently empty of people, except of course for one old family servant with a long memory--an apt metaphor for the mind. Yambo submerges himself in these artifacts, rereading almost everything he read as a school boy, blazing a meandering, sometimes misguided, often enchanting trail of words. Flares of recognition do come, like "mysterious flames," but these only signal that Yambo remembers something; they do not return that memory to him. It is like being handed a wrapped package, the contents of which he can only guess.

Within the limitations of Yambo's handicap and quest, Eco creates wondrous variety, wringing surprise and delight from such shamelessly hackneyed plot twists as the discovery of a hidden room. Illustrated with the cartoons, sheet music covers, and book jackets that Yambo uncovers in his search, The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana can be read as a love letter to literature, a layered excavation of an Italian boyhood of the 1940s, and a sly meditation on human consciousness. Both playful and reverent, it stands with The Name of the Rose and The Island of the Day Before as among Eco's most successful novels. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Yambo, a sixtyish rare-book dealer who lives in Milan, has suffered a loss of memory-he can remember the plot of every book he has ever read, every line of poetry, but he no longer knows his own name, doesn't recognize his wife or his daughters, and remembers nothing about his parents or his childhood. In an effort to retrieve his past, he withdraws to the family home somewhere in the hills between Milan and Turin. There, in the sprawling attic, he searches through boxes of old newspapers, comics, records, photo albums, and adolescent diaries. And so Yambo relives the story of his generation: Mussolini, Catholic education and guilt, Josephine Baker, Flash Gordon, Fred Astaire. His memories run wild, and the life racing before his eyes takes the form of a graphic novel. Yambo struggles through the frames to capture one simple, innocent image: that of his first love.

A fascinating, abundant new novel-wide-ranging, nostalgic, funny, full of heart-from the incomparable Eco.

4 out of 5 stars Great but not easy.......2007-09-29

Umberto Eco's writing is great but not easy. This will stimulate your imagination and thinking, but an easy romp it is not. If you want to stimulate your imagination and thinking this is for you. If you just want a mystery this may be too much for you. This is probably not the best book to introduce you to Umberto Eco's writing, but If you already like his other books you will like this.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't finish the book..........2007-09-25

I made it to page 150 before I decided to give up on "The Mysterious Flame." I thought the book had a lot of potential as a mystery novel without all the cliche and overwrought plot. Instead what I got was a mumbling main character who never remembers anything of importance and asks himself the same questions over and over: Was this from my childhood? Did I make this memory up? Am I imagining a past for myself?

Interspersed between the redundant self-doubt were descriptions of various toys, books, and pieces of art, most of which have pictures in the novel. Nothing much interesting about the descriptions; I could have just looked up the art on the internet if I were interested.

Nothing wrong with the prose--Eco knows his words. Just a boring, boring story.

2 out of 5 stars Rather disapointing.......2007-08-19

Although it wasn't 100% uninteresting, I found it, on the whole, very boring. Picture this: a 60 year old intellectual wakes up from a coma with no memories of his past. In order to retrieve this memories, he goes into an excruciatingly detailed account of every book, magazine and comic strip he ever read in his life.
Compensated by one moving episode from his childhood, I found the setting, the subject and the personality of the main character irrelevant and definetly lacking in the excitement and the depth of the other Umberto Eco's books I have read.
--Written By Mary Camarena

4 out of 5 stars Five Stars for the Journey, One for the Destination .......2007-08-12

For me, the best part of the book was the view of everyday Italian life during World War II. This is a perspective that I hven't encountered often, and Eco does a brilliant job painting a small town that has gone "schizophrenic" in the eyes of the young Yambo.

Eco creates such a wealth of characters and builds such intensity around a rather simple idea -- remembering the face of a first love. Unfortunately, I felt the ending was rather weak. Without giving away too much, I'll just say that I felt let down. The resolution was hinted at throughout the book, especially if for readers familiar with other Eco books.

Still, I have to recommend this book because the journey through a person's memories, whether real or imagined, is so intriguing and well-executed. There is a lot to think about with this book. I only wish Eco had devised a more clever finale.

2 out of 5 stars Boring and disapointing.......2007-07-01

Like many other Eco fans I keep looking for books of at least the same quality as the Name of the Rose.
The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana is rather disapointing, except the first third which is well written and promising.
Unless you are a fan of Ialian interbellic media you will find a lot of boring information and the rest is not so satisfying either.

After all these years I still adore this story about Heather and Brandon. Their story is so true. You can feel the love growing between them, even though the odds weren't good at all in the beginning. Brandon is rough around the edges and Heather is a bit too shy in the beginning. But as the story continues these things just work out.
I loved this story and together with a rose in winter, this one is my all time favorite.

2 out of 5 stars Rape, love and other nonsense.......2007-08-29

I wanted to push it to 2.5 stars, but can't. I understand that Woodiwiss supposedly changed the face of romance, but I don't see how. Of course I didn't start reading romances until the mid eighties, and they were still using either rape or the Stockhom Syndrome to justify why unbelievably gorgeous females fell in love with handsome criminals-but at thirteen you're just pleased as peas to be reading things regarding sex.
As grown women, these authors should have known better. During the reading of this, I kept trying to excuse things by saying-okay it's fantasy. Apparently this author or authors found an audience that had rape fantasies. Or fantansies of being so beautiful that men can't be in the same room with you without having to have you. (Hey, in a world where people fantasize about being farm animals or hanging themselves to get off, who am I to judge?) Still, do you realized that Heather Birmingham was raped or nearly raped 8 times!!!!
The author ignored every REAL possibilty to redeem Brandon and instead went for the campy, by showing us, see-he offers jobs to the needy, see he buys her everything a woman could want, see he throws her wild parties. Everything-but the obvious: have him remorsful about the rape. But no, by the end of the book, if she doesn't willingly come to his bed, he'll rape her again! WTF?
Then there are the out of this world flowery literary prose. Who talks like this? So much of the dialogue, especially in the third act, was hard to digest-very hard. And don't get me started on that ridiculous murder storyline. You mean to tell me this woman was so dumb she couldn't tell whether someone had stop breathing or simply passed out drunk? As for the comment that Woodiwiss was the first to open up the bedroom-(if you want to call that flowery nonesense sex) that's not true. Pauline Reage's Story of O was written in 1953 was the first. And as far as being the foremother of romance, I'd give that honor to the likes of Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters or even Margret Mitchell. Those women also wrote characters readers could identify with and romances that you could root for. Romance writers get so much slack, but the truth is that this drivel is what started the literary world looking down their noses at the genre and rightfully labeling them Bodice rippers. Frankly I like to pretend this period in romance never happened.

2 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea...........2007-07-19

I had heard great things about this book; I was told that it started the whole genre of the romance novel so when I picked it up to read it, I did so wanting to like it. Still I want to like it, but after reading it I can not get past the cavalier attitude towards rape found in this book. Basically the "hero" Brandon mistakes the "heroine" Heather for a prositute and even though she tells him "no" he rapes her. Even after he finds out that she is no prostitute he bascially shrugs it off, rapes her again and tells her that she is to be his mistress. And somehow by the end of the book this is all okay. Rape is not something I take lightly and so I guess it is a given that I would not enjoy this book. I realize that there are many who like this book and I'm not trying to belittle the book, but for those who do not enjoy romance novels where the so called hero rapes the heroine then this is probably something you won't enjoy. I must say that I was enjoying the book up until the rape, and I would like to read something else by Woodiwiss that may be more to my tastes.

1 out of 5 stars tedious to say the least.......2007-07-19

Wow this book was a drag to read. The characters barley spoke to each other. No witty banter, hardly any conversation at all. Absolutely no chemistry...I skimmed most the book b/c it was so boring. Never reading another book from this author

5 out of 5 stars Flame and Flower.......2007-07-02

Absolutely love this book. This is the first romance novel I've ever read and loved it. Fell in love with romance novels and in love with Woodiwiss splendor novels. I'd definitley recommend it to anyone. Everytime I reread it, it makes me fall back into the world of romance and takes me back into time and I feel like I'm apart of the book. Woodiwiss is very talented. The book was great, the hero was great, the herione was great. All the other characters were great.

Book Description

New editions of Elspeth Huxley's stirring account of her childhood in Kenya and her novel of the destructive forces of colonization.

In an open cart Elspeth Huxley set off with her parents to travel to Thika in Kenya. As pioneering settlers, they built a house of grass, ate off a damask cloth spread over packing cases, and discovered--the hard way--the world of the African. With an extraordinary gift for detail and a keen sense of humor, Huxley recalls her childhood on the small farm at a time when Europeans waged their fortunes on a land that was as harsh as it was beautiful. For a young girl, it was a time of adventure and freedom, and Huxley paints an unforgettable portrait of growing up among the Masai and Kikuyu people, discovering both the beauty and the terrors of the jungle, and enduring the rugged realities of the pioneer life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for Happy Valley.......2007-06-23

This is by now a revered classic of a young girl's childhood in the Kenyan countryside under British rule. One reads this and instantly identifies with the colonial family. It's a kind of Swiss Family Robinson story about that magical time in Kenya and thereabouts before World War I when the world seemed to be at the feet of the British King and all globes glowed pink under the Empire. Were people ever so free and happy as the colonialists in Africa who instantly had countless servants, nearly free land, and the British fleet for protection? This is Out of Africa for the middle class, as opposed to Isak Dinesen's aristocratic take on things. Still, the going was good, as Evelyn Waugh once said. Ms Huxley is a charming writer. Required reading for lovers of things African.

5 out of 5 stars The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood.......2007-02-02

The Flame Trees of Thika is a wonderfully written book giving the reader a glimpse of what it must have been like to grow up in Colonial Africa. It is an experience most of us will only have through reading and can only be compared to what it must have been to be one of the early settlers on the American Frontier.

4 out of 5 stars Love this Author.......2007-01-10

I loved this book. It is beautifully written and is a gripping story on growing up in Africa.

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Classic.......2006-02-16

In 1913, a little English girl named Elspeth relocated with her family from their native country to begin a coffee plantation in the wilds of Kenya. Similar in a way to Laura Ingall Wilder's adventurous and sentimental "take" on what was surely a very difficult experience for her family, Elspeth remembers Kenya as a wonderful place and tells us with lingering excitement of her experiences there in the short time before the First World War changed nearly everything. A delightful memoir that is a pleasure every time it's read.

5 out of 5 stars When can I get a plane to Africa?!.......2004-10-18

If you are interested in other cultures and ways of life, this book is a treasure. Yes, there has to be a bit of willing suspension of disbelief that this would be the way a child would see and describe things, but if you can live with the fact that this is an adult looking back on her childhood, it's a small thing to get over. The descriptions I found perfect--very vivid, yet not so extensive that they became boring and slowed down the story. And just in what happens and isn't even excused (her parents leave her with neighbors, she accompanies the neighbor's worker to the city, where he leaves her with some more strangers--we'd be calling the police, and her parents are just slightly inconvenienced! And everyone else there has just left their small children at boarding school, not seeing them for years!), the book gives a lot of food for thought about the realities of life in that time and place.
