Book Description

In recent years, "dating" has become a dirty word in many Christian circles. So dirty, in fact, that young believers are now encouraged simply not to date. This position has provoked an open debate among teens, their parents and youth workers, and single adults. For a great number of them, many questions remain unanswered.

"Lord, what do I do with this desire to date?"

"Can dating be an option for young adults who love the Lord and long to please Him?"

Is not dating really the only acceptable option in God's eyes? The answer, assures author and youth pastor Jeramy Clark, is a resounding "No!"

The time has come for a sound, biblical, and practical approach that balances out the extreme perspectives: dating without responsibility versus a complete withdrawal from the dating process. Learn how you can confidently pursue healthy dating relationships that are characterized by holiness and integrity--and ultimately bring glory and honor to God--in I Gave Dating a Chance.

5 out of 5 stars Just What We Needed.......2007-09-17

This book is exactly what the Church needed after the flood of anti-dating holier-than-thou material that has ruined many Christians' perspective on God's will. Here you will find solid definitions without straw-man arguments or reactionary statements. A balance has finally been struck! Thanks, Jeramy. God has used you to bring hope for the future.

5 out of 5 stars jeramy clark is the man.......2007-08-21

i may be jumping in to this discussion several years too late, but i'm glad i read these attacks on someone who's passion is to see young men and women find love in a healthy way. i know how this book came about and i read it several years ago before i got married. not only would i say that jeramy took the time to search scripture, but you're hearing from the heart of a man who intimately knows god.

hands down beats any other christian book on dating. especially 'choosing god's best'. john calvin wouldn't even appreciate that book.

4 out of 5 stars balanced, biblical book.......2005-05-10

Jeramy Clark is obviously a man who loves God, His Word, and His children. His book on dating is based on the truths stated in the Word of God, not his own made up rules. I really like how he made the point that God is who we are supposed to love most. If you are't complete in him, you will never have a good dating or married life. You cannot find everything you need in a significant other, only in God. I also liked how he mentioned that is okay to desire romance and sex. God made us that way. It's just not supposed to be our obsession. I deeply appreciated Jeramy's wisdom and humility. He certainly doesn't claim to have all the answers nor promote a cookie cutter way of dating. I personally believe the Holy Spirit is to be our guide more than anyone or anything else. God himself is the creator or romance and wants to be control of that aspect of our lives.
Prov. 3:5-6

1 out of 5 stars Writer in Bad mood?.......2004-08-29

Must have been something he ate, or something, cause this book is a direct attack on Joshua Harris' I Kissed Dating Goodbye. Not only is it unpleasing in God's eyes, it's just plain rude. His basic ideas are almost identical to what Joshua Harris says, but Jeramy insists that his view is the right view and Joshua is completely wrong. He may have said the right things, but he needs to change his attitude.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Perspective.......2004-06-16

As someone who was previously a part of the "wait - never date!" group, this book was an excellent help when I did, in fact, start a "dating" relationship. While he does address some of the ideas put forth by Josh Harris, he does so in an honest and acceptable manner. I'd probably recommend this book over Harris', but if someone is looking for a slightly different take on relationships, Boy Meets Girl is a good read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not an Accidental Read at all!.......2006-12-04

I had not read much from this author except her 4 book series with Beverly LaHaye, but when our library had this one in large print, I just picked it up "accidentally" and decided to read it. I had not gotten into many pages when I was grabbed by the plot.

I did not even know there WAS a second chance series and I rather wondered how a secular book could be re-written sucessfully as a Christian Fiction book, but this one was wonderful.

When Wes first met Laney, he suspected her of being a stalker and/or kidnapper of children, and he had her arrested. His fears seemed rational until he heard her story. The child of Wes and his deceased wife Patrice, was adopted right after birth, and Laney, the birth mother had finally found them through illegal means. The story then unfolds of two people who have absolutely nothing in common except their love for one little girl, Amy. Through it all the ghost of Wes' dead wife Patrice hangs heavily over both their heads as well as Amy's.

I felt Terri Blackstock drew upon some incredible experience as an author to format and carry through with this suspenseful, love-hate story and the twists and turns which led to a very, very strange and almost unbelievable bond between Wes and Laney.

I wish to thank the author for re-writing this book and for using her talent for her new "boss", God. I am now searching for other second chances books by this author.

3 out of 5 stars Christian cotton candy.......2005-09-16

I like to support Christian authors, however reading this book was like eating cotton candy. It was easy to do, but left me feeling slightly sick to my stomach.

The character development was poor at best. The whole story was rather contrived and just not credible.

I spent an afternoon reading it, but somehow wish that I'd used the time more wisely.

5 out of 5 stars Another one for Terri Blackstock.......2005-07-20

As the first book in her Second Chances series, Terri Blackstock set the stage for her Shreveport, LA characters. I was instantly drawn to Wes & Laney's determination of making a family work. Of how their love grew for each other, but determined to make it God's will.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read with a light tone throughout.......2003-08-27

Adoption, romance, trust, and truth interweave in this book about second chances from the "Second Chances" series by Terri Blackstock.

Laney Fields returns to the town of her youth in a journey to recover the child she gave up for adoption several years before. The child's adoptive mother died recently of cancer, and her father, Wes Grayson, is struggling to make his construction company cover the costs of the medical bills.

Wes meets Laney as she surreptitiously takes pictures of his daughter playing at a playground. Suspicious and worried about a possible kidnapping, he calls the police and arrests Laney. From the beginning, Wes finds it difficult to trust the woman who may be trying to steal his child from him. They both realize that they're attracted to each other, but Wes can't trust Laney and she doesn't share his faith in Christ.

Their budding relationship is threatened by their pasts and their links to one little girl who carries the key that could bring them together or tear them apart.

In addition to confronting issues of adoption, Blackstock also suggests the consequences of relationships between Christians and non-Christians. The fact that this occurs at all suggests that Blackstock is not afraid of controversy. That a Christian man would knowingly enter into this type of relationship, no matter what the end results are, shows disobedience to God.

Throughout this book, the character of Laney is far more sympathetic than that of Wes. Wes, as a Christian man, shows far more weakness, sin, and stubbornness than Laney. He thinks through his decisions and makes purposeful choices about anger and distrust. Laney admits to confusion about religion, yet makes far fewer mistakes than Wes. She has one honorable goal, to love and care for her daughter. Unlike Wes, Laney's errors are accidental. Perhaps the non-Christian showing greater Christian attributes than the professed Christian is closer to reality than many would like to admit.

Nevertheless, many readers will find "Never Again Good-Bye" to be an enjoyable read with a light tone throughout. It is a fast-read with a clean storyline and happy ending that make it a great summertime read.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Sweet Sweet.......2003-03-23

This book is a great, sweet story of overcoming grief and struggles and giving it all to God in love. I love this book and I would recommend it to anyone who want to read a the sweet story of Wes and Laney as they both go through trials and hard times for the love of their daughter Amy. Read this book!

Book Description

Back for another dose of high drama, Compton's sassiest, Jayd Jackson, is about to discover it really is a different world when she starts dating South Bay High's finest white boy...

All Jayd Jackson wants is a drama-free year at South Bay High, a.k.a. Drama High. But it doesn't seem she's going to get it. It's only the second week of Junior year and already, Misty, her nemesis, has almost gotten her killed after instigating a fight between Jayd and KJ's girlfriend, Trecee. But it goes with the territory. She's a fire child, and granddaughter to Lynne Mae Williams--Mama--and Mama says that means the drama will follow Jayd wherever she goes. Even so, Jayd just wants to chill, still hoping Junior year can carry on, drama-free. And with Misty and KJ reportedly "hanging," Jayd is ready to move on. But the brother won't stop blowing up Jayd's cellie, and the text-messages keep coming; and the message is clear: KJ wants Jayd back bad.

But Jayd couldn't care less. She's got a new man to kick-it with now--a half-Jewish white boy from Palos Verdes whose parents are loaded with a capital "L." And Jeremy Weiner's no ordinary white boy--he listens to East Coast rap, he's got a sweet ride, and he's got it bad for Jayd Jackson. But no one at South Bay High will just let a sistah be happy. Misty's back to her usual foolishness, KJ's all over her jock, and the notoriously anti-black teacher Mrs. Bennett is tripping. Jeremy's got her totally sprung, but she's going to have to rely on her brains--and some of Mama's magic, of course--if she's going to survive another week at Drama High.

4 out of 5 stars Broken Wings.......2006-03-15

I love Terri Blackstock's books. I find I can identify with her characters - I am always sad to finish a book. The best part is knowing that she writes her books in a series, so you can keep up with your favorite characters.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2002-06-29

From one author to another I tip my hat to Terry Blackstock for this supurbly written ROMANCE. How refreshing to read about characters that could live next door instead of with 'the rich and famous.' "Broken Wings" rings with realism and the authentic action and dialogue will often reduce the reader to grab for the tissue box. Masterfully researched, this narrative and its study of fear and its effect on our lives will bring back similiar experiences for many of us. The author offers insight into recovery with out sounding preachy. Actually the best romance I have read in a long time. Plan to read more from the talented Terry Blackstock.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best series.......2006-01-30

This series is too simplisitic and not as in depth as her other series. It is enjoyable to read once for a light afternoon break, but not worth a second read.

4 out of 5 stars When Dreams Cross.......2005-07-20

After the first book, Never Again Say Good-bye, this book followed Blackstocks style perfectly. I was more able to identify with these characters than the first books, so it drew me in a little more. This was another good one from Terri Blackstock.

5 out of 5 stars Timely.......2002-06-26

Terry Blackstock's "When Dreams Cross" is a well written story about the distructiveness and havoc that too much pride can have on a relationship. Without preaching, this talented author gives readers insight into the struggle we all face to let GOD be first in our lives and to learn to bend to his will. This is my first Blackstock book and I am now a fan with the intent to read more from this great author.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Battle of His & Her Wills!.......2000-10-03

This well done romance begins strong in first chapter with development of two strong-willed, prideful people who need each other to accomplish their dreams. Could feel the torrents of clashes between Justin and Andi keenly, inside and out, and enjoyed the challenging roller coaster of circumstances that finally grounds their mutual faith and drives them to work together. Marked my book throughout with checks where the author delivers memorable descriptive phrases, such as, "Just Justin. The words didn't go together. It was like saying, 'Just napalm.'"

4 out of 5 stars Suspense and mystery entwined with romance.......2000-05-30

This is the first of Blackstock's novels that I ever read, and have since read all of Second Chances, Suncoast Chronicles, and Newpointe 911. The romance part of When Dreams Cross was not very creative and it was easy for me to figure out that Justin and Andi would eventually find each other in the end. However, what made this book great was the suspense and mystery throughout the story and the apparent sabotage of Promised Land. This thread of trying to figure out "whodunnit" kept me reading until the outcome and was the first inkling that I got that Blackstock is a much stronger suspense writer than she is romance writer. Apparently, she now realizes that too, because her later two series bring her skill of mystery writing to the forefront and put the romance angle as pleasant secondary plotlines. When Dreams Cross was a great mystery and only a fair romance (which is why I deducted one star), but worth reading by any Blackstock fan, any Christian who has ever questioned God's plan for the future, or anyone who has ever failed at romance and gun-shy to try again.

I liked Enamored better than Mystery Man. Diego Maremos is a highly delectible guy, and the story of him and Melissa has elemnts of suspense, romance and intrigue as well as some very satisfying love scene. Hot choclate and this book will give you a warm and fuzzy evening. Mystery Man stretched the believability quotient more than I like. It was cute, but it read as if the author had dashed it off on a weekend.

I have to say that I am a huge Diana Palmer fan. I love her books and have read many. I was excited when these came out because they are her older works republished. So, I got too read two books in one for a low price. I wish now though that I wouldn't of wasted my money. I disliked Enamored the most. The only good thing about this book was when Diego spoke spanish to Melissa. I thought that was sexy, but I have no idea what he was saying because I don't speak spanish. He only spoke to her in spanish when they were in a heated moment so, I am assuming that he spoke words of love to her and I found that sexy. Anyway, Deigo and Melissa made love in a cave while they were being chased by criminals. Then her father caught them and Deigo assumed that Melissa set the whole thing up to trap him. (Why he would think that, no one knows because he had no reason to think that.) He hated her after they got married and his family hated her also. They treated her like trash and so when she found out she was pregnant, she left. She didn't want her child growing up around that kind of hatred. Years later, they meet again and he doesn't even realize that her son is his. After he does realize it, he wants full control over the boy. Melissa lets him do it too. She is a weak-minded person. She lets him treat her like crap and she calls it love? I just couldn't see the passion between the two of these people. I thought that there was none. I didn't like Deigo or Melissa. Good thing that it is a short read.
Mystery Man was a little better than Enamored. I actually laughed in this book. Janine is a author and she is babysitting her little brother while her parents are working. They are staying in a beach house and her neighbor is Canton. He was rich and now he is poor. He lost everything, so him and his daughter are taking a break from life on the beach also. They are staying right next door to Janine. The two kids hit it off and became friends right away. (I liked the two children in this story better then the adults) Then Canton's ex-wife tries to kidnapp his daughter and also, pothunters are after Janine because of the artifacts that her parents discovered in their dig. So, this couple has two villians after them trying to get to them. If, this story was longer and more in depth than, it would have been better. Too short and not enough information was given. I don't even think that we learned the villians names or what ever happened to them. I also found it hard to believe that Janine was so young, but she was already an author of bestselling books and she was a private investigator before she was an author. Anyway, these stories are short so, read them because of that, but I was disappointed in them. Usually Mrs. Palmer writes stories with heated passion and conflicts and lots of emotion, but I didn't find any of that in these two stories.

5 out of 5 stars America's Free Love Crisis of the 60's.......2004-10-12

The too soon intimates, like those of the Baby Boomer's in their hindsight, if truthful, might have approached their lives much more like their parents, at least from the perspective of choosing a mate. So many divorces implies that the choices were less than careful to begin with, suggesting that intimacy may actually impede the process of finding "the" one with whom life can generally always be a joy, and where hardships simply make a couple closer, and strengthens their relationship. The major contribution of fantasy films that draw shallow significance and convert it into meaningful philosophy cannot aid a culture for whom gender differences are already in crisis and where men are taught by society to be patriarchal kings. Inevitably, it is women who do the growing up over the years, and realize the lack of fulfillment much like the slave society discovered the power and pleasure of freedom. Women who read too much emotion into the sexual convenience of males, and attempt to snare them into matrimony are likely to find considerable disappointment years later when life has failed them. It is as great an argument for celibacy as their ever was, and better than most. Even without celibacy, fathers rarely insure their daughters well being and physical care as they once did releasing both men and women to go it alone, and try to take care of themselves, a lottery of accidental proportions. The problem has left millions searching for what they might have had years earlier with greater scrutiny of the persons they chose, having made mountains of lemonaide from lemons. The alternative is that they might have listened to their mother, (or of lesser prominence, their father since most of those are too anxious to get rid of the responsibilities of daughters today and fall into the social traps). The possibility of finding a mate better suited to their personalities is possible, but arduous, and obviously takes more honesty and effort than was devoted to it initially, when "whole lives" are before them, and time is their friend. At older ages, the promise of love comes about slowly, if at all, and with greater appreciation for the personal values of potential mates, at least for women. Many men are seduced into searching for their youth and often find themselves victims of the younger mate's desire to start families, and discover they must do it again whether they choose to or not. The expectations of older mates nearer each other's age is among the most difficult, but also among the most satisfying of relationships since true compatibility is always the objective, and unreasonable expectations have long fallen by the wayside. To most humans, this amounts to being truly loved for your mind and heart, if you are female, and for your perspective and your faults, if you are male. Because the wildness of sex is generally not a part of the decision process, human attraction must rely upon all of our other parts to emphasize our humanity and our tenderness to carry the relationship. While oldsters may be sexually active, this stage may be the truest phase of all love for its cooperative independence where choosing such a love is a choice, and not an illusion. To finally grow old together, couples who choose to depend upon each other are always ready to share with each other, their hopes, their dreams, and their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2004-03-27

Sometimes it just takes a reminder that the world is full of people who want to connect with other people, and that it is possible to nurture a really close friendship that will be - in itself - very rewarding. All good relationships have a close friendship as the foundation, so what better way plant the seeds for a romantic relationship? And the more seeds you sow, the more likely one is going to thrive and bloom.

This is a good read, very inspiring, and very down to earth.

5 out of 5 stars First be a friend, then a lover = good advice.......2004-03-04

This book combines inspiration with practical, sane guidance. Finding and sustaining love is always a challenge, and the older you get, you more you can become dispirited over your chances of ever finding a suitable partner. Another Chance for Love takes the unusual stance that it's actually friendship that is the answer. Seeking out, valuing, and deepening friendships with reasonably suitable individuals may lead you to a longterm, deep, and abiding love that will make your earlier quest for fireworks seem shallow. Gordon and Shimberg discuss values, trust, communication, humor, and passion (not just for sex, but for life) - among the aspects of a good friend. Relaxing into the safety and flow of an authentic friendship, they explain, is more likely to lead to something richer than if you begin every official "date" with unreal expectations.

5 out of 5 stars More than another dog story.......2007-04-29

There are many wonderful stories about relationships between humans and dogs. I was expected another one of that genre. But, it has a few unexpected and extraordinary elements worth noting: (a) A profound sense of spirituality that never becomes preachy, and (b) A focus on the delicate intricacies of navigating a relationship with a spouse or partner, in which one is more connected to dogs than the other. Both these elements made this tale a particularly meaningful one. I read it in a single day.

5 out of 5 stars I will read this over and over!.......2006-06-29

What a truly wonderful book. I was often moved to tears while reading it. A word of advice to anyone who reads it is that you skip the Prologue until after reading Chapter 12 (up to page 171). I fortunately never read these so had skipped it and was so glad I did. Had I read it first I would have already known everything that would happen and wouldn't have been able to enjoy the book as it is written.

5 out of 5 stars A really good story that's really well written.......2006-06-21

Just finished this book and stopped back to buy a couple more copies for friends. Now everyone is entitled to their opinions--even German girl--though I wonder what ax she has to grind, but don't believe for a second that this book is anything but a beautifully written love story by the author to her dogs. That we get to be flies on the wall, so to speak, is all the better for us. The author's 3 amazing dogs have come into her life to show her what she does and doesn't know about dogs, and what she does and doesn't know about herself. The author rises to the challenge on both counts, and in the end, turns herself into a dog owner worthy of any dog. Loved this book. Loved it, loved it, loved it.

5 out of 5 stars If I could give this 10 stars, I would........2006-06-11

For anyone who's done a lot of learning and growing with their dogs, and handled the inevitable curve balls thrown along the way, you'll totally relate, and smile and nod with recognition.
This is a book that will get you laughing and crying and thinking, and loving your dogs more than you already do.
A book not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Story!.......2006-05-31

With the popularity of dog memoirs, it's hard to know what's worth your time or money. If you like books that paint the dog as wrong, incorigable, untrainable, or owners as alpha know-it-alls or instant experts, this book is not for you.
If you enjoy a great read that also happens to be a great dog story, full of heart and incredible twists and turns, you will find Dogs of Dreamtime well worth your while. This book has earned a place on my "keepers" bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Great stories.......2006-03-25

This is a compilation of three stories "One Chance in a Million", "Second Chance" and "Taking a Chance". The stories about the Chance brothers who live on a farm. There is 6 brothers, Gideon, Daniel, Paul, Titus, Logan and Bryce. The three stories incorporate all the brothers but each story center around one particular brother. The first is Gideon's story. Miriam sails across the ocean to see her sister Hannah who is married to Daniel Chance. When she arrives she finds that her sister has died and her two little nieces are being raised by these men. Daniel is unhappy with her being there because she looks so much like Hannah. Gideon wants to send her back. Miriam is determined to stay. Who wins? The second story is Titus's story. Alisa is running from the Law for a crime she didn't commit. She is on the stage bound for Reliable and meets up with Titus. They are drawn to each other right off. However, Titus had previously asked a girl in town to marry him but she turned him down. Now seeing him with another girl...she wants to change her mind. Things do get a little complicated and cute. The third story is about Paul. Miriam's cousin Delilah finds herself alone when her gambling father dies and she has nowhere to go. She decides to go see Miriam (who she has kept in touch with). Paul is the kind of strong man that Deliah needs but can she ever trust another man when her father has let her down all her life?

I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. There is very few "nice" women in Reliable and any time a girl arrives it is known by ALL the men in the area. They all want to come a calling and are getting frustrated that the Chance Brothers are all ending up with the available women. Great stories.

As a seperate note: There is another book by Heartsong Presents called "Last Chance" and this is Daniel's story. There is also another book coming out called Chance Adventure which is Logan's story. And I believe Bryce's story is called "Chance of a Lifetime". Very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
