Rebecca Hill is a preacher's daughter and Jackson Rule is a convicted killer. But Rebecca sees something in the handsome, stoic man that reassures her, and she hires him to work in her greenhouse, much to the dismay of her father. For Jackson, the job Rebecca offers him is an opportunity for honest work and a decent life. He's deeply attracted to Rebecca, but he's a man not only molded by years in prison, but scarred to his soul by the violence of his childhood. Rebecca struggles to come to terms with her growing feelings for Jackson and his reluctance to see a future for them. When defending Jackson causes a rift with her father, she refuses to back down. And it isn't until tragedy strikes a beloved friend that Jackson teaches the preacher an important lesson about drawing conclusions from outward appearances and past mistakes. Still, a future for Rebecca and Jackson seems doubtful until a heroic act sets in motion events that change forever how the world views Jackson Rule. Dinah McCall's book is intensely emotional, with a strong plot and vivid characterizations. It's easy to see why this skillful contemporary received the prestigious Janet Dailey Award in 1996. --Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
For powerful emotion and unforgettable romance Sharon Sala can't be beat. This beautifully repackaged classic is sure to delight her long–time fans and attract new ones!
Jackson Rule had spent nearly half his life behind bars for murder. Now he was starting over––or trying to. Once he laid hungry eyes on his new employer, though, his resolve to lead a simple solitary life deserted him, replaced by yearnings for fierce, forbidden passion.
Preacher's daughter Rebecca Hill was raised to give folks the benefit of the doubt––though maybe this time she'd taken charity a bit too far. True Jackson Rule had paid his debt to society, and was a hard, honest worker. What threatened to undo her was the sheer burning desire she felt in his presence, and the sinking feeling that her heart would be his captive forever.

Lacks Common Sense.......2006-10-05
I suppose Ms. Sala is a solid storyteller, but her one big flaw in writing her novels centers around the lack of research in the situation to which she casts her characters in. This flaw is so blatant in this book that I found no compassion for the chracters; to me, Jackson and the heroine, Rebecca, are downright hokey. Jackson, at age 16, was convicted of manslaughter for the killing of his father. Fast forward 15 years, and he finally gets out and starts working for Rebecca at her nursery. First off, NO ONE gets 15 years for manslaughter, let alone a minor who was abused by his father. Add to that, Jackson was beated unconcious first by his old man, while his sister laid beaten and sexually abused next to him--who did he have for an attorney--a mute puppy? Geez! And when he gets out, Jackson is so angelic that it makes me want to puke. He holds babies, reads to homeless kids, saves like 10 lives, and so on and so forth. If he is that flawless, then he should have gotten out on good behavior and been out by 21! The whole thing tries to tug at my heart strings, but really, none of it is grounded in reality, thus, the ploy to jerk does not work. In order to make me feel compassion, the situation has to be realistic. So, this book,in my opinion, really needs a dose of reality
Eh..........2006-07-20
Jackson Rule is not only the name of this book, but also the name of the male lead. The story begins on a momentous day in Jacksons life...he has just been released from serving a 15 year prison sentence. We get to look in as Jackson little by little begins to adjust to his new freedom. It is touching to see how appreciative he is of small things, and I found myself feeling frustrated right along with him as he goes in search for work, but is turned down again and again because of his past. Then, he crosses paths with Rebecca Hill, the owner of her own landscaping business...and she decides to take a chance on him and give Jackson a job...and so the romance begins.
Jackson Rule is just the sort of story that I would normally swoon over. A big, tough, emotionally tortured and misunderstood man is finally comforted and given the love he so desperately desires by a woman that he is completely shocked will give him the time of day. I just loooove the idea of it, but here, it just didnt work for me...
There were a few things that bothered me about this story...first, while I felt that Jackson was well developed, I was left feeling unsatisfied with Rebecca...I wanted more from her. I didnt feel like I got to know her well enough. As for Jackson, I liked him. He was well written, but the trouble I had with him was that he was TOO good. I mean, no one is that good...and just the fact that he happened to be in the right place at the right time to save others over and over...well, it just didnt ring true IMO. The biggest nit pick I had with this story, however, was not about the characters or plot, but the writing...so saccharine! There were moments when I would cringe...whether it was something one of the characters said or thought,it all came across as too cloyingly sweet. This authors writing style was just not for me.
I have, however, heard a lot of great stuff about this story. A lot of other readers love it. I cant say Jackson Rule was a bad book, but this is not an author that I see myself reading in the future.
HOT! HOT! HOT!.......2006-07-17
Be sure you have a glass of cold water nearby because Jackson Rule is STEAMY !
No one is that good.......2005-11-19
SPOILERS HEREIN
CAUTION
This is the story of redemption - and the folks who truly end up redeemed are not those who seem like they need it in the beginning of the tale.
Like most of Dinah McCall (as mine is published under) or Sharon Sala's books, the depth of depravity of the bad people in this book is truly disturbing. But that stuff does happen in real life. And I suppose if really, really bad people exist, it follows that really, really good ones do, too.
The title character, Jackson, has been imprisoned for killing his own father since he was 15 years old. I have a hard time believing that the authorities would not have seen the extenuating circumstances of abuse that was rampant in the household.
In fact, all of the characters are completely blind except Jackson, and partially the heroine, Rebecca.
The number of would be rapists in this universe is also unbelievably high.
In short, I found this book to be mostly a slam on the males of the specie - they're either angels or blind or demons. And I find that incredibly blind.
However, it was a good read...

Unconditional love at it's best! .......2005-11-17
This is one of the best Sharon Sala/Dinah McCall novels I've read. It is very poignant and moving. Jackson Rule is a man any woman could love. Though he is not what he seems, he is a true hero in every sense of the word. Rebecca is the atypical preacher's daughter. She never came across as sanctimonious or with an "holier than thou" attitude. She was the epitome of "judge not" and "love thy neighbor" and was the one person willing to give an ex-con a chance at an ordinary life. I loved this book.

Book Description
Agrarian Environments questions the dichotomies that have structured earlier analyses of environmental processes in India and offers a new way of looking at the relationship between agrarian transformation and environmental change. The contributors claim that attempts to explain environmental conflicts in terms of the local versus the global, indigenous versus outsiders, women versus men, or the community versus the market or state obscure vital dynamics of mobilization and organization that critically influence thought and policy.
Editors Arun Agrawal and K. Sivaramakrishnan claim that rural social change in India cannot be understood without exploring how environmental changes articulate major aspects of agrarian transformationsâtechnological, cultural, and politicalâin the last two centuries. In order to examine these issues, they have reached beyond the confines of single disciplinary allegiances or methodological loyalties to bring together anthropologists, historians, political scientists, geographers, and environmental scientists who are significantly informed by interdisciplinary research. Drawing on extensive field and archival research, the contributors demonstrate the powerful political implications of blurring the boundaries between dichotomous cultural representations, combine conceptual analyses with specific case studies, and look at why competing powers chose to emphasize particular representations of land use or social relations. By providing a more textured analysis of how categories emerge and change, this work offers the possibility of creating crucial alliances across populations that have historically been assumed to lack mutual goals.
Agrarian Environments will be valuable to those in political science, Asian studies, and environmental studies.

Book Description
As we struggle to subdue our own mind, will, and emotions to Christ; as we strive to preserve unity and mutual love for one another in the Body of Christ; as we attempt to advance the Kingdom of God and make disciples of all the nations-we do not contend with people's hearts and minds; we contend with the spiritual forces of darkness. In this stirring book, Christians are called to realize that they have been drafted into God's army and are even now taking a part-be it as combatant, captive, victim, or an instrument of the enemy-in the war against Satan and his minions. Jackson seeks to uncover the spiritual forces at work within the spheres of geopolitical unrest, the deterioration of the family, and the warring forces within individuals. He encourages readers to find their places in Jesus Christ, connect with the Body of Christ, and use their gifts to achieve maximum impact for God's Kingdom.

Defining Faith and Fine Tuning The Conscience.......2007-09-10
"Just acting like a normal Christian is an extremely radical thing to do"
- Harry R. Jackson, Jr.
I give this book my highest recommendation.
This is the finest book on the topic implied in the title that I have read. It has some very practical and pragmatic advice about faith, conscience and the power or lack thereof in religion and/or a believers perception of such.
Here I will paraphrase what I deem to be the most important paragraph I personally have ever read concerning the concept of faith:
One of the problems with the concept of faith, as it is conceived of by many, is there is no clear distinction between attitude management techniques and what is purely Biblical faith or supernatural thinking if you will. Managing our attitudes is in fact very important- even essential to be an effective Christian, spiritual warrior or even just a good person. "be positive" motivational techniques , however, are not in themselves keys to releasing the supernatural power of God. The supernatural peace of God which comes from his tangible presence is able to do FAR more than a peace that comes from attitude management.
The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 3, A Prayer:
14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height-- 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Jackson goes on to write about the ways we can detect God's unction in our lives. here he cites what is called "twofold assurance":
1. Our hearts assure us (conscience)
2. The Holy Spirit within us
James Madison once stated;
" Conscience is the most sacred of all property"
Jackson explains;
The word conscience is not found in the Old Testament. The closest reference is found in Proverbs 20:27
"27 The lamp of the LORD searches the spirit of a man ; it searches out his inmost being."
Conversely, in the New Testament there are 30 references to conscience. The Greek word for conscience is suneidesis which is defined as an abiding consciousness whose nature it is to bear inner witness to one's own conduct in a moral sense. It is self awareness.
Speaking for myself I can state unequivocally that every time I have not listened to that small still voice that has said to me "don't do this" or "you ought to do that" trouble has ensued more times than not... sometimes BIG trouble. Judging by this acknowledgement alone I think it is safe to say that being out of touch with one's conscience can carry a heavy cost... perhaps even a lethal cost.
Jackson explains that you do not have to be a Christian or even a believer to have a conscience. It is something that is installed in every person because every person, whether they believe or acknowledge it or not, is made in the image of God. Conscience is the RULE of God imparted to every man and woman. In fact, those who have never heard the Gospel of Christ will in the end be judged by how they have responded to their own consciences.
On this Romans 2:14-16 says (Amplified Bible):
14 When Gentiles who have not the [divine] Law do instinctively what the Law requires, they are a law to themselves, since they do not have the Law.
15 They show that the essential requirements of the Law are written in their hearts and are operating there, with which their consciences (sense of right and wrong) also bear witness; and their [moral] decisions (their arguments of reason, their condemning or approving thoughts) will accuse or perhaps defend and excuse [them]
16 On that day when, as my Gospel proclaims, God by Jesus Christ will judge men in regard to the things which they conceal (their hidden thoughts).
Often people think of conscience as an afterthought, a twinge of guilt or remorse after the fact. However, conscience is a moral compass that is designed primarily for PREVENTION. As stated, in this sense, being out of touch with conscience and/or God can be disastrous for people, people groups or entire societies or civilizations.
The goal then is to harmonize, inasmuch as we are able, our consciences according to what God ordains as right and/or wrong. Jackson goes on to explain three ways in which this is accomplished:
1. reproof and correction- we have to learn to receive correction from trusted, spiritual, strategic relationships.
2. sincere repentance- we must embrace a re calibrated, redefined consciousness and lifestyle of repentance.
3. Faith and comprehension- in the saving power of Christ and the raw power and genius of modeling our lives on his example. This includes understanding the aforementioned distinction between attitude management and or psychological crutches and the supernatural peace and tangible presence of God in one's life and/or mind.
Jackson then goes into six ways for a spiritual warrior to find or tap into supernatural inner strength and wisdom by FINE TUNING THE CONSCIENCE:
1. Fight your way out of a siege- don't lose heart.
2. Find the joy of camaraderie- cultivate strategic relationships.
3. maintain ranks in the face of battle- in the midst of trials and triumphs alike, continue to keep the commandments of God.
4. remember the BIG picture- focus on the glory of God during hardships and always remember the real enemy is not flesh but the forces of darkness in the spiritual realm.
5. Use the power of consistent focus- always remember the goal... to maintain righteousness and make it to the Heavenly Kingdom of God.
6. Stay connected to the source of joy- maintain an intense prayer life and communion with God... without this the vision and all the rest begins to fade.
The rest of "The Warrior's Heart: Rules of Engagement For The Spiritual War Zone" only gets deeper and better from there.
I personally count this offering as extremely valuable insight and information. I hope you do too.

Book Description
Decimated by famine and emigration, and divided by Irish rule, the people of Ireland sought unity in Home Rule. This idea bound together the varieties of Irish nationalism. It has united British and Irish politicians in the quest for an agreed settlement in Ireland; it has linked Ulster Unionists and Irish Nationalists. In this book, Alvin Jackson examines the development of Home Rule and devolution in Ireland from the 19th century to the present, with a focus on high politics. He traces some of the main themes in Irish peacemaking from the late Victorian period to the beginning of the millennium, including the Good Friday Agreement. Drawing on new archival evidence, Jackson presents a balanced view of Irish political history and contemporary affairs.

Excellent book to teach a young man the right to passage in this world.
Very informative and timely for today's young men.......2007-01-09
This book is very ensightful and full of good advice for our young african american brothers. I found it to be extremely eye opening for my 17 year old, who is about to embark on the real world upon graduation. This book is a vehicle to use for a reality check. As parents we can tell our children things and they feel we are just being parents or over protective, but to see it in writing from older men is confirmation. This book is a great gift to any young man especially if he is about to leave home for the first time.
WOW, this book is good...and I'm not Black!.......2003-12-07
I bought this book to be passed around the Adolescent crisis center where I work. It's an INSTANT hit, with guys even coming up to me to remark, "this book is cool!" It's easy-to-read, with large text and each page dedicated to a single idea. The advice is honorable and the writing style is classy. The authors aren't shy about any subject, and they give advice to young men that is genuinely significant. It takes its readers seriously, doesn't "preach" or come off like a scold-in-disguise. Now to find a corresponding book for females...
A great read if you want to help your adolescent son grow........1999-11-06
I purchased the book for my adolescent son to read. My hope was that he might find some helpful hints on how to deal with his everyday life situations. What I found was an opportunity to communicate with him in a way that had here-to-fore been impossible. We began to really talk to each other about life and death, about different situations he would face in the world, in this country, in the neighborhood and in the home. We talked about how his responses to them would determine the kind of man he would become, the kind of life he would live. The book poses many real life situations that young Black men are faced with. It shows them the right answer to them, the right way to go. The authors must have drawn from many of their own experiences - the examples are on the money! I would strongly urge any parent, White or Black, who has an adolescent male in the house to buy this book and read it together.

Li'l Mama's Rules is one of the best books that I have ever read. I really enjoyed the main charater Madison a lot. I thought that the author beautifully wrote this book and put a lot of thought into where she wanted the story to go. I ended up crying at the end of the book but for the most part I spent my time laughing non stop.
If you have not read this book please go out and get it because it is well worth the money.

Chicken Head Rules.......2006-11-28
Sheneska Jackson's Lil Mama's Rules is a contrived story detailing the observations of an emotionally immature woman who thinks she knows everything about relationships but knows nothing at all about anything. Poorly written and poorly plotted, this one just isn't bad; it's bad for you.
Meet Madison Maguire a college-educated thirty-year-old know it all without a lick of common sense. A teacher at California's Mighty Avalon Prep School she's developed a laundry list of rules for having a relationship with Black men. Unfortunately she rarely applies those rules to her own life. In the first chapter of the book she's out on a date with Terrence, an actor wanna be she doesn't like. Instead of saying good night at the door she lets him in her home because he says he needs to go to the bathroom. She soon learns it's a ruse when he makes a beeline for her recliner and spends the next three hours watching her TV. Instead of throwing Terrence out, Madison whines and complains about what a jerk this guy is. For the next thirty pages. Thirty pages. In between going on about him, she rambles on about her mother, her sister with Tourette's Syndrome and what a jerk her father was for abandoning her family and what a dog her ex Christopher is. Somehow this rambling passage segues into a flashback involving their relationship. We learn Chris is a jerk for cheating on her. After confessing, Christopher proposes marriage and insists they move to Chicago so he can live out his dream of helping inner-city kids. Even though he knows she's poor and has a job and hasn't completed her degree yet. Poor Madison. She's still pining over a guy who is nothing more than an emotional blackmailer. The kind of guy who twists and bends the truth about situations to benefit himself. The kind of guy who lies manipulates and plays passive aggressive games. He's her mister wonderful; the guy she can't get over.
In between the ranting about Chris and her father, Madison nearly drowns herself in the bathroom sink. Dripping wet, she then goes into the bedroom, gets her journal and writes more of her rules, none of which she follows. All this while Mr. Himbo Terrence (incredibly handsome man with no personality) is still in her apartment. She returns to her living room and instead of throwing him out sleeps with him. Gag.
The next chapter follows Ms. Madison at a day at work at the Mighty Avalon Prep School. The Principal constantly sexually harasses her. We get another flashback story about her affair with the married principal. On top of this some secret Admirer is sending Ms. Madison gifts. She's trying to figure out the mystery while answering phones. Her mother calls work to ask for her to take her to church. In between arguing with her mom, We get more rambling about what jerks her boss, Christopher, her mother and her father are. Everyone is to blame for the sorry state of Poor Madison's life except for Madison. Sista needs a therapist cause she has more ISSUES than a magazine.
Her Gay male best friend (Cliché Alert) Malik stops by and they talk about developing a sex-ed curriculum. He's the only one who can understand her, poor thing. They go over who the secret admirer could be. We get a couple of well written passages about Madison's sister Serena (who should have had her own book) then back to more rambling about Madison's mishaps with men. While waiting at a restaurant for a late date she goes on about a white man she met while answering a wrong number. (yeah, that's smart) She rambles about dating him and almost sleeping with him. I wanted to throw the book across the room. After Flashback 5278, her date arrives five minutes late and she decides to walk out. This is the first and only time she follows her ridiculous rules.
Madison goes to pick up her mother and sister for church. During the sermon, Serena has an episode. Trying to calm her down, Madison finds out that her mother has been splitting pills to save money. After she gets out of the bathroom, The secret admirer reveals himself: Christopher. He wants to get back with Madison. He's grown. He's changed. It's more like he's run out of victims in Chicago and he's returning to California to play his games of emotional blackmail with people he's taken advantage of in the past. Madison walks away.
Madison's mom becomes a pawn of Christopher's emotional blackmail. She calls Madison to insist she get back with him and she hangs up on her. The manipulative Christopher shows up at the school pleading his case. Madison has sex with him in her classroom then walks out on him saying it's over. No, it's just beginning. The more attention a woman pays to an emotional blackmailer, the more he'll be in their face.
Later, she reads about a football player she dated in the obituaries. After yet another flashback story, we learn she's slept with him too (the way it reads sounds like rape to me). Through a convoluted turn of events, Madison attends his funeral and learns from a family member there he died of AIDS.
After the funeral, a panicked Madison gets an HIV test. Her best friend Malik is planning his commitment ceremony. She soon learns she has HIV and goes off. Emotional Blackmailer Christopher is there to save her and proposes marriage. Emotionally vulnerable Madison accepts. Her father arrives to help after not helping the family for over twenty years. Soon after Madison and Christopher are married, the sex ed curriculum is passed and everyone lives happily ever after. Excuse me while I go puke.
Lil Mama's rules is one of the worst books I've ever read. A precursor to the horrid subcategory of women's fiction known as Chick Lit, it has all the elements of a title in that genre: A hapless heroine working in a terrible job with a terrible boss, a Gay male best friend, incredibly handsome man, and some of the worst writing ever to be published. Ms. Jackson's writing style features long rambling paragraphs, shifts in focus from past to present without a chapter break and everything ends with a happy ending through a Deus Ex Machina. The story is directionless. The rules disappear after page 100 and Serena's subplot disappears altogether after page 145 without a conclusion. None of the characters learn from their experiences. Madison comes out of the story the same way she went in married to the same emotionally abusive man she dated. The vicious cycle goes around again and the reader finishes the book angry enough to toss it across the room. It's hard to believe that Sheneska Jackson teaches writing at a college after reading this book. Harder to believe Scribner published a book of this poor quality.
Pass this one by on the bookstore shelf. Instead pick up One of Connie Briscoe or Kimberly Lawson Roby's books.

Best Explanation of the FAR's .......2007-01-23
Over the past 30 years of flying I have brought perhaps 10 books on the FAR's including several updates of the full regs. This is better than the whole bunch combined.
Jackson combines the actual text of the regulation, letters from the FAA interpreting the regs , case law, plain English explanations of what they mean and comments.
This book provides everything you need to know about the regs to pass the exams but more importantly to fly safely and legally. It is indexed, cross referenced, written in the language of pilots and reflects Jeppsen's historic commitment to serving the needs of professional pilots.
Lucid explanations of the regulations.......2000-08-17
The Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) can be somewhat overwhelming becuase they're not in layman terms. This book attempts to clear up ambiguity by analyzing the regulations in FAR parts 1 (definitions), 61 (airmen), 91 (conditions of flight) and NTSB 830 (reporting incidents and accidents).
It's a pity this book hasn't been updated in five years because it's a good reference. Each section of FAR parts is examined, usually with a plain-language explanation, references to Advisory Circulars or other regulations, National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) rulings and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chief counsel opinions.
For example, many pilots get confused regarding 61.118, "private Pilot Privileges and Limitations: Pilot in Command." This is the section that attempts to spell out when a private (versus "commercial") pilot may be compensated for a flight. Subsection (b) specifies a pilot "may share the operating expenses of a flight with his passengers."
While this would seem pretty straightforward, people interpret this in ways that the FAA didn't intend. Consider three scenarios:
1. I am a software engineer and have a business trip to Portland. My salesman, who wants to sell more widgets, and I fly and I submit the actual rental and parking expenses for reimbursement from my company.
2. Friends of mine are parachute jumpers and pay me to carry them up so they can jump. I charge them $100 of the $150 it would cost me to go on the trip.
3. A friend wants me to fly her to Friday Harbor. I charge her for half of the gas, oil, parking, insurance, and maintenance.
As the "Federal Aviation Regulations Explained" might point out, #1 is legal because the flight is incidental to my job (programming).
#2 is not legal because I'm not really making the trip for my own purposes. In this case, FAR Explained points out the NTSB case "Administrator v. Reimer, 3 NTSB 2306 (1980), where the pilot was found in violation because there was no common purpose. The pilot's motive was to build hours partially paid for by others.
#3 is not legal, either, because the passenger would not be paying out of pocket expenses. Insurance and maintenance are usually factored over a period of time.
According to the FAA Counsel opinion, in #1, I would be able to expense it and build flight hours because the destination is where I have a paritcular business incidental to flying for a living.
The FARs can be painful to read, but this book helps clear some of the ambiguity and provide some background on NTSB and FAA interpretations such that a pilot won't be caught by surprise.

I laughed so hard, tears came to my eyes!.......2002-11-04
Despite how much role-playing games and wargames attempt to simulate reality, they are still game with rigid rules that can sometimes make the reality it portrays out to be rather silly. This book not only exposes these bugs, but does so with hilarious art and headlines. I can read the same rules goof over and over and still be doubled over in laughter.
Gamers will appreciate these the most, but even my non-gamer wife finds one or two of the rules funny.

I liked the book as it showed errors in many games and gave ideas on how to use them. Some were very funny and they also listed several of their own games and the mistakes in them. The pictures were funny too.
Geeks doing silly things....has to be funny!.......2001-12-23
To be honest, I bought this book because I was quoted on the back cover :) HOWEVER, I cannot deny that I opened the book...and found that there was no end to the excitment. I believe I finished the entire book in a matter of two days! Ok...its not really a BOOK, but a comic book.
Why is it funny? Because 9 times out of 10 I can relate to one of the comics in the book (being an avid D&D player). Those that are not into RPG games will probably find this book stupid and dull. Those of us that can relate to even 1 of the comic's on each page will laugh (...).
The book contains jokes made of flaws within the RPG systems. Some of them you may have seen (or questioned) while others have never grabbed your attention before. Take a silly flaw and exploit it with a hilarious depiction within the cells of a comic strip... a good time.
However if this is the most funny thing you've ever read or seen...then your definatly a geek that needs to get out more! Its worth its weight in silver, but its not The Lord Of The Rings.
