Book Description
This highly respected text, now in paperback, has been thoroughly updated and revised. It introduces a logical theory of photographic lighting --- one that teaches beginning photographers to predict results before setting up lights. This is not primarily a how-to book with only set examples for photographers to follow. Rather, Light: Science and Magic provides the reader with a comprehensive theory of the nature and principles of light to allow individual photographers to use lighting to express their own creativity. Numerous photographs and illustrations provide clear examples of the theories delineated within the text, while sidebars highlight special lighting questions.
Although styles of photographic lighting continue to change, Light: Science and Magic does not go out of fashion because it is not based on style; rather it is based on the behavior of light. These principles will not change until fundamental physics does.
*Now in paperback
*Highly respected text on lighting theory covering the principles, applications, and equipment for informed lighting decisions
*Sidebars highlight special lighting questions
Customer Reviews:
Excellent study.......2007-10-09
This book describes itself as a grammar of lighting. I would add that it is a descriptive rather than a prescriptive grammar, that is, it tells you how lighting works as a matter of fact, rather than trying to tell you what you should do as a photographer. I'm still rereading chapters and getting something from them, perhaps especially because I'm taking the authors' suggestion and trying to do the exercises myself.
While it is not terribly technical -- it's well written and easy to read -- the book is a bit abstract, in the sense that it's trying to describe the general properties of lighting as used for photography. For some readers and photographers, the abstract or theoretical approach may not be congenial. The book has very little (almost nothing) to say about equipment, for example. In the section on portrait lighting, the emphasis is simply on what happens when lighting is placed in different positions -- not on which form of lighting is best.
But I personally found the book's approach exhilarating. I've read so many photography books it's hard for me to single out one as THE most informative and THE most helpful to me as a photographer, but if I had to do so, this book might be my pick.
Learn What You Already Know, but Don't Know!.......2007-10-02
I sort of learned nothing from this book, but also learned EVERYTHING.
This book takes what I see everyday, but don't think about, then turns it into thought. I've always known that light reflects from things in three different ways, but that knowledge has sat unconsciously in my lower brain. My higher brain, which does shutter speed, depth of field, and f/stops, was oblivious. The book brings your two brains together!
Best Lighting Book I've Read.......2007-09-30
As a professional photographer and instructor, I've perused many books on photographic lighting, portrait lighting, etc. I say "perused" because most are complicated in the way they present their information, or, present examples that -while technically sound- are totally impractical for everyday use. So much so that I rarely buy them. This is understandable, as professional lighting is the single most difficult aspect of photography to grasp, let alone master. So explaining it isn't always easy, either.
This book -while it does use a bit of technical language- approaches each example in a very straightforward way, explaining when and where each technique is useful, how to perform each technique and even the troubles you're likely to encounter when you first attempt them. In short it's like someone is sitting there with you leading you through the logic of how the lighting works, and helping you to look out for the pitfalls. And while it's not that thick of a book, it is *dense* with information. There is much to absorb and learn, and frankly I've seen no other book that comes close in terms of making it a pleasure to learn.
This book will be a required text for any university classes I teach in the future.
The distiction between humans and apes.......2007-09-29
On the first day of his Physics 45 (i.e., photography) class, Ross Scroggs put a "rock" on his lecture table and told his students that this was an ax, one of the first human tools. He also told them that art, demonstrated in cave paintings, evolved simultaneously with tools. "I do not need to teach you art," he said, "because, if you are human, you will produce art as soon as you have the tools. I intend to give you the tools. I will not mind wasting my time with the overwhelming majority of apes in this class, because the handful of humans here will certainly listen to me and that makes it worth my time."
This book was originally developed by two students from the University where Scroggs taught, and he's the prominent dedicatee of the book. It's not my place to say they have delivered his promise, but read the other reviews of this book, written almost entirely by people who never knew Ross Scroggs, and look at the similarity between their descriptions of the book and Scroggs' promises.
Excellent title for learning lighting.......2007-09-27
This is a book that will teach you about light and how to apply it. It isn't meant for you to copy a setup to get similar results. It is an outstanding book that tells you why you put the lights in a particular position and why it works in one instance, but not another.
IMHO this is a easy to follow fun to read college course on lighting. If you are looking to improve your craft this is a must read. This is also a book in the reference library of the Certified Professional Photographers association and helps in preparing for their exam.

Must have for Rebel XT owners.......2007-07-13
If you want to learn all about your Rebel XT camera, this is the book to buy. If you are happy with the manual, then you may not need this book.
great camera manual.......2007-04-13
After reading some of the other reviews, I was hesitant to buy this book. I did anyway, and found it to be exactly what I was looking for - a book on how to use this camera to it's fullest. If this is what you're looking for, then buy this book.
Great book!.......2007-04-04
This is a must if you have the camera. Like I've read, the instruction manual is lacking.....especially if you're a novice. I plan to buy one for my daughter who just now bought the camera. It answers a lot of questions.
Must have for XT users.......2007-03-13
Good book that goes in depth a lot further than the factory manual that comes with all XT cameras. Gives lots of detail and a no brainer when you consider the lost cost versus high value. You'll always keep this one in your bag, trust me.
Canon Digital Rebel XT.......2007-03-11
I bought the camera and read through the manual, and found it informative, but then found this book which I feel is easier to use then the actual manual. It is the manual PLUS MUCH MORE. I no longer use the manual - I have this book. Highly recomended

This 330-page coffee-table book combines the writing of Mark Cotta Vaz and Patricia Rose Duignan with more than 600 photographs and illustrations to chronicle the accomplishments of Hollywood's hottest special effects company. Industrial Light & Magic, where Duignan spent two decades of her career, was founded by George Lucas to create the effects for his groundbreaking movie, Star Wars. Since then ILM has continued to pioneer new technologies which have led to SF classics such as "E.T.," "Terminator 2" and "Jurassic Park". This books offers a behind-the-scenes look into the magical moments ILM has helped create.
Book Description
Includes a foreword by Steven Spielberg!
The supernatural wonders of Ghostbusters. The lively three-dimensional toons from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? The unstoppable liquid-metal T-1000 cyborg of Terminator 2. The incredibly life-like digital dinosaurs of Jurassic Park. The thunderous African stampede in Jumanji. These award-winning special effects have one thing in common: Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).
For more than twenty years, George Lucas and the technical wizards at ILM have literally changed the face of movie-making with their stunning, often unbelievable, visual effects.
Industrial Light + Magic: Into the Digital Realm chronicles ILM's second monumental decade--from 1986 through the mid-nineties--and includes a special discussion on the latest groundbreaking visual effects in the soon-to-be released Special Edition of Star Wars: A New Hope.
During this seminal period, ILM virtually redefined visual effects and blazed a trail into the digital realm. With more than six hundred lavish full-color photographs, this fascinating book takes you behind the camera and into the rarely seen workshops, offering an amazing look at the men and women who create movie magic. We follow the intricate crafts of matte painting, model making, and optical compositing as they are transformed into digitally driven systems, and we track the contributions of model and creature makers, animation specialists and optical technicians, and the unsung stage hands and pyrotechnic experts.
Packed with astounding information about ILM's technical innovations and remarkably clear explanations--including a revealing look at ILM's work with TV commercials and theme park attractions, a comprehensive glossary of essential terms, and detailed screen credits for all the company's film projects--this volume will enchant and enlighten all of us who have ever marveled at what we've seen on the screen and wondered: how did they do that?

The 2nd decade of ILM in a great book!.......2006-11-05
First there was ILM, covering the 1st decade of this fantastic Special Effects Company.
This is the second book of the series, covering the main movies from the second decade of existence of this company.
An execelent finishing, great value book (although it is a litle expensive, the book quality is exceptional).
Essencial to all Special Effects lovers.
Fantastic!.......2005-06-17
One of the greatest 'making of' writers Patricia Rose Duignan's Industrial Light & Magic: Into the Digital Realm is one of my all-time favorite books, charting the journey of ILM from fledgling company in George Lucas' garage to the No.1 Special Effects company in the world. Insightful and comprehensive, this is flawless reading and has some great accompanying images from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and surprisingly some of their lesser-known movies like Willow and Hook. An essential movie book, I just love every page, so carefully written, so rich in detail, it leaves the reader feeling that they have experienced something very special. Fantastic and brilliant. BUY IT NOW!
Pricey, but well worth it........2004-01-25
The book is huge and heavy. Every single page has at least several great color photographs and it is a big book. You will love to read about ILM's ventures into the digital realm. It is very technology orientated, but not too much and does talk about the film making process and ILM in general. This is well worth looking at especially for fans of ILM or those who want to see what goes on behind the scenes or for those looking for a career in this direction. This is a good place for inspiration.
Although it does not cover the more recent movies you will still get the picture here. It starts by talking about go-motion and then moves onto the first ever digital sequence and how much people slaved over it before going into detail with the evolution of that process and of the special edition of Star Wars and Speilberg's "J. Park".
The book looks fantastic. Keep it for your grandkids. I am sure they will love you for it. This is the kind of book that you will turn to time and time again just to see "how they did that".
The Future of the Magic.......2000-06-15
For 25 years Industrial Light and Magic has woven magic into countless films, either subtle images through `invisible' effects such as matte paintings or through eye-popping visuals that stand out vividly against the film backdrop. ILM has made it's mark on history, for not only have they been and still are the premiere effects house in Hollywood, they have innovated and invented more technology than any other studio, additionally they have won awards for the processing and compositing technology they have created. ILM had to be the best at special effects, because their flagship title - STAR WARS - demanded the best, because that's what Lucas wanted.
`Into the Digital Realm' isn't so much an abandonment of ILM of the traditional methods of special effects, rather a point of departure for the new technology and all of things that led up to it. Indeed, ILM's work on `The Hunt For Red October' submarine work involved flying the submerged vessels from wires in a smoky room - effects do not get any more traditional than that. Released in 96, the book doesn't mention that Phantom Menace or even that the film is in production. It does have some revised images from the Star Wars special edition. As with the previous tome, this one is packed with hundreds of color photos, plus the same beautiful gate fold images.
If the center piece for the previous book was Star Wars, Digital Realms' focus is obviously Jurassic Park, because it was the first film to use CG on so large a scale, even more than Terminator 2, which ILM also did. Jurassic Park was also the test bed and showcase piece that convinced Lucas that computers had finally matured enough to bring what he had in mind to the screen for the new Star Wars films. More is the pity, because I came to loathe most of the aliens in the Phantom Menace. Digital Realm clearly explains in easy to understand terms how effects - both new and old - are accomplished, be it something as simple as making it appear as if buildings are actually much taller than they or having a velociraptor walk _behind_ a plant situated in the foreground. I have both of these wonderful books, and I strongly recommend them to anyone who is curious about ILM's history and the process of how effects are made.
Extraordinary.......2000-04-09
An extraordinary book about an extraordinary company. You will know all you want to know about special effects wizardry. The book is well published, even watching its pictures is joyful.

Prescription for Love.......2007-01-22
Known for his bestseller, LOVE, MEDICINE & MIRACLES, Bernie Siegel, M.D. presents readers with his latest prescription for family health. In LOVE, MAGIC & MUDPIES, Siegel offers advice for parents and grandparents. Equal parts sage, comedic, and loving, Siegel's words of wisdom address everything from daily living to family time to hefty issues that can intimidate everyone.
Rather than lecture, Siegel makes each point within two to three pages and follows up with suggestions to add magic to the home. He keeps it simple and on topic, which makes it a comfortable read.
This touching book would make a great gift to parents and grandparents. As with any parenting guide, take it and use what works for you. Some families will find Siegel's view rather laid back, even "fluffy," but don't let that put you off. No matter who you are, there will be something to find and treasure within these pages. If nothing else, the writing will make you feel warm, even as you laugh with delight.

Subtitled: Raising Your Kids to Feel Loved, Be Kind, and Make a Difference
Siegel offers a simple, easy-to-read book for parents on raising children to feel loved. Divided into eight parts, we're shown how to create family values, show love, be comedians, get creative, use the three Rs, work through rocky roads, encourage a child's soul, and care for ourselves as well. Each section is then divided into topics--short, two-paged devotional-type messages, starting with a famous quote and ending with a gray box entitled "How to Make the Magic," which offers tips on how to incorporate that topic into your life.
This book could easily be a daily reading for a parent, with over 100 topics to work through over the course of a few months.
I really enjoyed working through this book and trying some of the tips and tricks within my own family. I especially like this particular line in the book: "The key ingredient...is love. You cannot consume too much love nor become deficient by giving too much away. ...If love makes the bricks out of which you build your life, laughter and humor are the mortar."
Everything in our parenting boils down to love...our discipline, our laughter, and our friendships with our children. How we treat them is how we show our love to and for them. By following the vast array of advice from this book, any parent...any family...would benefit greatly.
Armchair Interviews says: It's a nice little handbook for great parenting!
Words of Wisdom.......2006-12-13
Another great book from Dr. Bernie Siegel. A wonderful reminder to enjoy our children while they are young and keep a sense of humor and an open heart. Two thumbs up!

An Excellent Primer for Inkjet Printing.......2006-06-03
For most of us the ultimate goal of making a great digital photo (or a film photo for that matter) is to make a great print. As luck would have it, however, print making can be both the simplest and the most exasperating aspect of the digital process. Issues like color managent and equipment profiling are not concepts that come naturally to most of us. But Derek Doeffinger has done a fine job of putting all of this into simple, clear language.
Sure, pressing a button to get a quick color print is as simple as it sounds, but when it comes to getting a great print, it takes quite a bit of practice and some good basic knowledge. This book is the best primer that I've seen on the subject (and I'm surprised there aren't more good books on this topic). The book covers every aspect of printing including: setting up a good workspace, choosing the right printer, understanding technical issues like resolution, tone/color adjustments and calibrating your monitor, etc. In fact, it's hard to think of an aspect of digital/inkjet printing that Doeffinger doesn't cover.
Incidentally (or perhaps not so incidentally) the book is superbly written and nicely designed--a very fun and informative read. Most important though, there is nothing about this book that will scare you off if you're just getting your first serious inkjet printer and if you're an experienced printer, you'll still find lots of useful information. When you consider that the book costs about the same (or less) than a good ink cartridge or a pack of paper, it's a very good investment.

Another wonderful Betty Neels book!.......2001-12-30
This is another wonderful book by English romance book author Betty Neels, her books are really a delight to read and I have found them quite addicting, I can't get enough of them and I'm always looking for her older books in used book stores which isn't always easy as the few used book stores in my town have long waiting lists for her books and as soon as they get her books they are gone, and they rarely get her books anyway because most people like her books so much that they keep them and won't part with them for anything! I was lucky to have found a copy of A Kind Of Magic that was in good condition and it is a really great book and I like the characters a guy named Fergus Cameron and a young lady named Rosie MacDonald and I like how the story took place in England and Scotland because as much as I like her books that took place in England and Holland the locale of Scotland was a welcome change. I recommend this book, it's a keeper, well at least for me it is!
FATE & A SMART SCOTTISH DOCTOR FIND THEIR FEISTY MATCH !!.......2001-11-28
COVER: Rosie had a recipe for Mr. Right ....
"The man I marry must dote on me, cherish and love me for always, even when I'm bad tempered or sneezing my head off."
Fergus Cameron certainly wasnt' likely to fit that bill. Arrogant, exasperating, absolutely determined to have his own way - he was exactly the sort of man most women found annoying - and Rosie was no exception.
Of course, she had to admit he could be charming when it suited him. But since he'd already announced that he'd found the girl he planned to marry, Rosie couldn't care less......
This heroine is so busy being good to all her family and elderly relations that she forgets to just please herself. :) She keeps telling herself that she is going to be very picky in a mate, but she has a huge heart with a limitless capacity for loving anyone, warts and all. She is a loving selfless daughter and a wonderful person and the hero is fast to catch on and quick to realize that he needs to hold on with both hands !!

Unlike most of the Scholastic Pokemon books, this has a sound plot. It does not deliver what is implied in the cover caption "Pikachu and Meowth . . . friends forever?!" but it speculates on what can happen when two former enemies depend on each other for survival.
Just one gripe about the Scholastic Pokemon books: I wish they would have illustrations that fit they stories, rather than cutting corners with stock pictures of Pokemon characters.
Pokemon in the book of two of a kind.......2001-01-27
Pokemon junior is the best book I have ever read in my whole life because there are funny caractors in it. I like when pikachu and meowth got stuck together and team rocket tried to take them away and pikachu and meowth got stuck together and ash got the key to unlock them.
