Book Description
Not since Betty Eadie’s Embraced by the Light has a personal account of a Near-Death Experience (NDE) been so utterly different from most others—or nearly as compelling.
In the thirty years since Raymond Moody’s Life After Life appeared, a familiar pattern of NDEs has emerged: suddenly floating over one’s own body, usually in a hospital setting, then a sudden hurtling through a tunnel of light toward a presence of love. Not so in Howard Storm’s case.
Storm, an avowed atheist, was awaiting emergency surgery when he realized that he was at death’s door. Storm found himself out of his own body, looking down on the hospital room scene below. Next, rather than going “toward the light,” he found himself being torturously dragged to excruciating realms of darkness and death, where he was physically assaulted by monstrous beings of evil. His description of his pure terror and torture is unnerving in its utter originality and convincing detail.
Finally, drawn away from death and transported to the realm of heaven, Storm met angelic beings as well as the God of Creation. In this fascinating account, Storm tells of his “life review,” his conversation with God, even answers to age-old questions such as why the Holocaust was allowed to take place. Storm was sent back to his body with a new knowledge of the purpose of life here on earth. This book is his message of hope.
"This is a book you devour from cover to cover, and pass on to others. This is a book you will quote in your daily conversation. Storm was meant to write it and we were meant to read it."
-From the foreward by Anne Rice
As I lay on the ground, my tormentors swarming around me, a voice emerged from my chest. It sounded like my voice, but it wasn’t a thought of mine. I didn’t say it. The voice that sounded like my voice, but wasn’t, said, “Pray to God.” I remember thinking, “Why? What a stupid idea. That doesn’t work. What a cop-out . . .”
That voice said it again, “Pray to God!” It was more definite this time. I wasn’t sure what to do. Praying, for me as a child, had been something I had watched adults doing. It was something fancy and had to be done just so. I tried to remember prayers from my childhood experiences in Sunday school. Prayer was something you memorized. What could I remember from so long ago? Tentatively, I murmured a line, which was a jumble from the Twenty-third Psalm, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the Lord’s Prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and “God Bless America,” and whatever other churchly sounding phrases came to mind.
“Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. For purple mountain majesty, mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. Deliver us from evil. One nation under God. God Bless America.”
To my amazement, the cruel, merciless beings tearing the life out of me were incited to rage by my ragged prayer. It was as if I were throwing boiling oil on them. They screamed at me, “There is no God! Who do you think you’re talking to? Nobody can hear you! Now we are really going to hurt you.” They spoke in the most obscene language, worse than any blasphemy said on earth. But at the same time, they were backing away.

My Descent Into Death:A Second Chance at Life.......2007-09-05
There isn't a person walking the earth who would not benefit from reading this book. I had seen Mr Storm on TV once or twice, back in the 90's, and was quite impressed. I wondered if he'd ever write a book about his experiences. I recently found he had, bought the book, and devoured it. It hit me like a locomotive. Don't hesitate, don't think twice, BUY this book. You will never forget it and you'll come back to it time and again in the future, I promise.
Q: What is the best religion?.......2007-08-28
A: The one that brings you closest to God!
I had first heard of Howard Storm back in 2005 during an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. Immediately I could tell of this man's sincerity from his deeply profound near death experience. This was truly the first NDE that, after listening to, had touched me so much that it caused another spiritual awakening in my life. His account of hearing voices telling him (by name!) to follow them down a corridor of darkness were more frightening than anything Hollywood could ever conjure up. These strange beings appeared, at first, to simply be in a hurry and behaved rudely and indifferent to Howard Storm. They urged him to move forward with them to an unknown destination of ever increasing darkness. As he continued on with them he became more aware of their malevolence which frightened him. These strange dark beings sensed his fear and they increased their behavior towards Howard. He finally stopped and said he would go no further. It was at this point that the real torment for Howard Storm began!
Can you imagine the horror he must have felt during all of this? Here was a self proclaimed atheist who was admittedly very selfish and used anger and rage to get what he wanted in his life. Now the sum total of his existence was living in a place of utter darkness being tormented by unknown beings and eaten alive! So much for being an atheist.
It was at this point Howard called out to God, a God he firmly didn't believe existed. As he called out to God these raging tormentors began leaving him alone but not without continuing their curses at him. In fact it enraged them even more. But as Howard kept calling on God finally he was all alone in this place of absolute darkness.
Out of this darkness he percieved a light coming towards him that finally engulfed him and picked him up. This light was the total antithesis of what he had previously experienced. Now he was being loved completely in an unconditional manner.
There's so much more to Howard Storm's experience. If you're even remotely interested in near death experiences then you absolutely MUST read this man's account. I would have given this 6 stars but they only allow 5! That's how much I loved reading this book. His story is one of total transformation.
In this hour of our planet's existence we need to be transformed as well. Read this book and you'll catch a glimpse of the ineffable love that emanates from God.
One of my favourite books ever.......2007-08-14
Howard Storm's book answers many questions in my mind about life, our purpose to live in this world, God, religion, and after life.
Although I am a Christian, I grew up in a Muslim countries and have many very nice Muslim friends that I love very much. I just cannot believe they will all go to hell just because they don't believe in Jesus.
Howard Storm explains clearly what God really wants from us, which is to love one another just the way He loves us. What a simple message, yet very true.
This book is the second most important book for me after the new testament.
Disappointing & Preachy.......2007-08-01
I was really looking forward to reading this book and was impressed with the first few chapters. However, Storm quickly got too preachy for my taste, and I actually found it quite repellent. The book started reading like a run-of-the-mill Christian sermon that went on and on. I had expected more. I would recommend Universe of Worlds by Robert Grant. Grant's book and workshop are where I had heard about the Storm book, which sadly turned out to be very disappointing. There is also very little on Hell in this book, though my impression had been that there was a lot more. That part of the book, though small, was interesting and well-written.
very nice.......2007-06-26
Very nice testimony. As howard Strom went from being an atheist, and now is "all about evangelism".
he says some things that don't fit mainstream theology.
1. he says he saw life on other planets.
2. "The one that brings you closer to God" is just a common sense straight foward answer. We know that Jesus is the way, but whether you be religious or not, if you have not the bread of life, you have not life at all.
3. He uses the term "spiritual evolution" Although this makes since to many well scientifically educated people, to the average fundamentalist it wreaks of heresy.
A good testimony to those who can accept it, but very controversial.

Among the best books ever written about men in combat, The Killing Zone tells the story of the platoon of Delta One-six, capturing what it meant to face lethal danger, to follow orders, and to search for the conviction and then the hope that this war was worth the sacrifice. The book includes a new chapter on what happened to the platoon members when they came home.

Written as Remembered. That's Important.......2007-08-26
Like most who have written books about their Vietnam experience, I believe Mr. Downs has told his story as he remembered it. There are several books out about the war where it's obvious that the authors are trying their best to paint a picture he or she thinks book buyers want to see and movie producers want to produce. Mr. Downs was very kind to the children when he described them giving the GIs the finger. Explaining that they were just greeting the soldiers as they had seen the GIs do to each other. That could be true in his case, but children are not dumb, they learn quickly. In aviation, we, too, had to learn quickly. Several air crews left this world after a child threw a grenade into the aircraft. This happened to me twice. I was lucky. Anyway, this is an interesting read and I'll describe it as "lucid and compelling". It's unlike my book, "Kill me If You Can, You SOB". It is by no means a rah-rah account of the war or the sociopaths who did their best to perpetuate it. Don't rush off to buy it. Most people hate it, especially Vietnam veterans. In my opinion, a Vietnam veteran who cursed Jane Fonda and then turned around and voted for George W. Bush is not fit to eat Jane Fonda's garbage. While these hypocrites were whining about this woman who was doing exactly what Jesus preached, two American heroes, Robert McNamara and Henry Kissinger were getting our troops killed by the thousands. I guess this little 110-pound woman made a much easier target for these damn hypocrites than McNamara and Kissinger. At least Kissinger didn't pretend he cared about these kids he was getting slaughtered. "Military Men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy." -Henry Kissinger
Really interesting book........2007-07-07
This book was really good, it started a little slow, and it climaxed really fast. It was like I started reading it and then all of a sudden it was over. It was definitly a good book though, all kinds of cool little stories.
Action.......2007-06-27
This is a great action book with ambushes, attacks, etc. The Killing Zone shows what it was like to live and fight in Vietnam. This was a very great read, it kept me reading it every night as much as I could.
vietnam.......2007-06-12
this book is such a waste of time, it tells you only the point of view of one's man ego and his denial of america's defeat by the north vietnamese. throughout the whole war,the u.s miltary only rely on body counts for there victory ,hoping the north vietnamese would fear the u.s army and surrender ,but in the end ,they were wrong ,the nva and viet cong were determine to fight to the death.
face it,even though the u.s military won many battles, the united states lost the war and retreated . the whole world is aware of this defeat but only some american citizen like this author denies this.
many of the vc casualty are infact innocent civilians ,that the u.s military has covered up by placing nva /vc uniforms and weapons on dead civilians ,then taking photographic pictures of it.
the united states gain nothing from the war ,with 60,000 + dead u.s soldiers ,thousands m.i.a (s) ,150,000 billion dollars down the drain ,over 100,000 seriously injured soldiers including amputees (missing legs, arms , body parts) ,and handicaps ,torn the country apart during the 60's and 70's ,fail to stop communism, fail to protect south vietnam, fail to stop an army that is 10 time smaller then u.s army, and fail to justified the war in rightious context, basically the united states gave up and retreated.
the north vietnamese suffered high casualty by fighting u.s army, australian army ,arvn army, south korean army, and new zealand all by them self ,but fighting to regain there country for a better vietnam in the future was a well justified reason to die just like anyother civil war (compared this to american civil war casualties).
so one's man ego and his obsession of denial will not change the world's view on why people should think who really won the war, everybody knows who won this war,and media wasnt wrong at all.
5 Stars........2007-03-12
This effort is one of the better accounts of the Vietnam War. It's interesting, well-written, and the accounts are plausible and intelligently reported.
Book Description
In 1975, at the age of forty, Richard Raskind, a renowned eye surgeon and highly ranked amateur tennis player, "died," and Renée Richards was "born," in what was to become the most public and highly scrutinized sex reassignment to date. It was not until Renée Richards was discovered playing in an amateur tennis tournament that the world took notice. Extensive media coverage and criticism thrust Renée reluctantly into the spotlight, sparking an intense public debate over her private life. Now, at seventy-two, Richards looks back and speaks frankly about all aspects of her complicated and often notorious life in this eye-opening, thought-provoking memoir.
Richards' honest and compelling narrative explores the dichotomy between the successful life she lived as Dr. Richard Raskind, who seemed to have everything (devoted friends, a beautiful wife and son, a stellar record of academic and professional achievement, and outstanding athletic ability), and a secret life of struggle with a drive that could not be suppressed, even by years of psychotherapy and the force of a considerable will.
Richards takes readers through her difficult decision to undergo surgery and the complex mixture of relief and continued frustration that came with the realization of her new identity. Discussing life after her transformation, Richards candidly relates the details, trials, and pleasures of her romantic life as well as fascinating stories about her tennis career, including her experiences as Martina Navratilova's coach. She also provides an intimate account of her difficult but rewarding relationship with her rebellious son: runaway teenager, high-stakes Vegas gambler, karate champion, and entrepreneur. She describes the deterioration of a once-loving marriage and the challenges of reclaiming her place at the forefront of her demanding medical specialty.
Having lived as a woman almost as long as she lived as a man, Richards draws on a personal history that illuminates thirty years of remarkable change in society's attitude toward gender issues. Her absorbing and inspiring story, at once heartbreaking and uplifting, is a testimony to how far we have progressed in our ability to discuss and accept sexuality in all its iterations, as well as a reminder of how far we still must travel.

Not so interesting.......2007-05-14
The book is not so interesting.
She told us, only the things she wants but nothing more.
It' s very politically correct, but the book is not useful to understand the complex life of transgender people, and the real changement of roles, habits, and so on..that was I aspect from a person who lived 40 years as man and 30 as women.
"No Way Renee" - a very entertaining book........2007-05-14
I enjoyed the book very much. It gave a very insightful understanding into the life of an interesting and accomplished person. Along with with being good resding it made you laugh.
Honest Transgender Issues.......2007-05-10
This autobiography will help you understand the issues transgenders face in our society. This fun book is written openly and honestly.
Honest and engrossing.......2007-04-13
I grew up with the Renee Richards saga in the background and saw an article on this book in People magazine and decided to purchase it. Dr. Richards writes with honesty, humor and intelligence, and I could not put the book down. She has a very compelling story, and it helped me to understand better what transgendered individuals might go through in our society. It was fascinating to read not only about how she reacted to her ordeal but her family members and colleagues. I think she must be a very courageous person and I thank her for writing this and sharing it.
An accidental pioneer.......2007-03-22
"It's people like this who make you realize how little you've accomplished," said satirist Tom Lehrer.
Dr. Renée Richards (aka Dr. Richard Raskind) is a person who knew everybody, hung out in the same social set with millionaires, sports and movie stars, appeared on national talk shows, ... . So if you're looking for some inside, titillating gossip, her readable book No Way Renée covers that too, but she doesn't overkill the issue. She speaks openly and honestly.
During her adventuresome life, Renée Richards pissed away a small fortune on rescuing her son Nick from his own youthful peccadilloes (a bright young man who certainly inherited his father's [ i.e. Renée] absence of humility), and she also traveled the low-paying professional tennis circuit. In a way, you could say she dug her own holes and then made a career of climbing back out of them. She certainly made the whole idea of transsexualism more acceptable to the public. Since the 70s, the medical community has recanted on sexual reassignment policies, so today transsexuals don't capture the headlines the way they once did. She was most fortunate to have her professional medical career to fall back on.
About 1/3 of her book (also co-written by John Ames) is devoted to recapitulating the first 40 or so years of her life. A new generation has since grown up who have never heard of Dr. Renée Richards. So, to understand Renée Richards more thoroughly, I encourage you also to read her first book, Second Serve.
Along the way, she also became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (no shabby achievement, and a fact not stated in her book). She also established a fine professional reputation and has published first-rate research articles on eye surgery. But for her transsexual distractions, I got the feeling she could have become a great surgeon, not just a damned good one.
Did Renée Richards really want to be the spokeswoman for transsexuals? I think not, but she still faced the challenge squarely. Given the choice, she would rather have been a successful surgeon who also happened to be a genetic female. Yet, as a most intelligent and rational man, in that one facet of gender she was driven purely by her emotions to -- above all -- become a woman.
Herein lies the greater question. Renée Richards clearly foresaw the public and private hazards of switching sexes, yet she was compelled to choose this path at the risk of torpedoing her own family and her career. So I don't think she came any closer to answering the question why? (I've had transsexual patients, and I'll be damned if I can come any closer to answering that big question.)
She never regretted having the surgery, yet, she sighs, she never found contentment either as a man with a "Miss Right" nor a "Mr. Right" as a woman. [ref. Interview "The Lady Regrets" in the February 1st , 2007 New York Times.] Even if you ignore her exterior, I still think you will find Renée Richards a fascinating person to know. Read the book.

Book Description
Malika Oufkirs profound and heartbreaking memoir, Stolen Lives, a New York Times best seller, told of her familys twenty-year imprisonment in a Moroccan desert jail and their eventual breath-taking escape. It became a huge national best seller and was only the second non-fiction title ever selected for Oprahs Book Club. In her new book, Freedom, Oufkir reveals what it is like to return to the world after twenty years of darkness. Living life for the first time as an adult woman, she writes candidly on her adjustment to the modern worldfrom using an ATM and shopping in a supermarket, to understanding the concept of freedom itself in a world with so many strange restrictions; falling in love; and having an intimate relationship with a man for the first time. Moving, funny, and full of wisdom and insight, Freedom is a sequel every bit as masterful as the originaland one that Oufkirs devoted fans will embrace.

Disappointing.......2007-09-06
Count me among the reviewers who found this book a tough slog.
The writing style is much different than that on her first book and, as I have met her and heard her speak, different yet from her own personal style. Makes me think she didn't do much of the writing herself, and maybe that's why some of us have the impression her heart wasn't quite into this, but she wanted to capitalize on the success of her first book.
I wish the author and her family well. They have been to hell and back. But I just cannot recommend this book.
Is It Natural To Live With Freedom? .......2007-09-05
In the memoir FREEDOM: THE STORY OF MY SECOND LIFE (a sequel to STOLEN LIVES) author Malika Oufkir describes relearning how to live as a free person. She was 19 when she, her mother, and her brothers and sisters were confined to a Moroccan prison. Before that she was adopted by the king and basically locked up in the king's court. She was 39 when she escaped; she later moved to Paris, France. She talks about her fear, present even after she's safe:
"Even though I am now far from my jailers, shielded by the media [the media learned about her family's imprisonment then spread the word], I'm afraid everything could collapse around me in instant. What exactly am I afraid of? I don't even know myself. Certain terrors are so deeply rooted that they defy all logic. Even now, I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, in those eerie hours when you can't quite tell whether you are awake or still dreaming, and I think I hear footsteps out in the hall... the apartment door opens and out of nowhere my jailers come to get me for crimes I haven't yet committed. Perhaps innocence begets its own guilt, planting suspicion both in oneself and in the eyes of others. That fear of being punished for things I haven't done, or haven't done yet, intensifies the hellish whirlwind of doubt. Like a battered child, I throw my arms up over my face, warding off blows and caresses, in order not to see what awaits me...."
Freedom isn't the gift she expects it to be; she is often confused about how to manage aspects it, particularly time: "Most free people are painfully dependent on their watches and alarm clocks, an almost physical addiction that makes them cling to each second as if were their last. I have all the time in the world." She contrasts free people's perception with her own: "I had to relearn everything. I had trouble with the notion of time, not knowing when I had to hurry and when I had time to spare, not understanding the imperatives of schedules."
Oufkir describes her struggles to figure out what a motion sensor sink is or how to operate an ATM--things people in Paris have probably used for more than 15 years--which is about the same as you or me trying to use laundry facilities in a foreign country when all the directions are written in a language we don't understand; this only beomes humorous later. These struggles are listed to illustrate what it means to straddle the gap between "what was" and "what is."(The German film "Good Bye, Lenin!" offers a funny take on this concept; the characters go to great lengths to keep someone from seeing "what is.")
FREEDOM's strength is Oufkir's focus on the small things that make up, for her, freedom. It's beautifully written and translated from French. Read FREEDOM first, then go back and read STOLEN LIVES. FREEDOM raises questions that are, to this reader's delight, answered in STOLEN LIVES.
Disappointing writing.......2007-02-18
After i read "Stolen Lives",which i have recommended to many of my friends, i could not understand why and how this book was written! There were times where the author lost me completely..it was boring and could not hold my attention. I had to leave it!
Truly dreadful.......2007-01-11
One of the few books that I've closed the back cover of and thought, Now that was awful. She has an amazing story. There were parts that really spoke to me. *Some* of the writing was, as previous reviewers noted, charming.
But overall, it's amazing she can be so impersonal about her life. I wondered if she'd done the writing for the thing at all. Lots of what she talked about seemed so intense and powerful, but it was like reading about repairing your bicycle.
[...]
Second Life.......2006-12-23
This was a good book but I felt I should have read "Stolen Lives" first as there seemed to be some gaps for me. I enjoyed Malika Oufkir's story, but wish there was more detail. I really wanted to know more about her struggle to live her life after so many years of not having that choice. More follow up on her family that went thru the 20 year imprisonment with her. The chapters are easy to read, but just wanted more length and detail. But I do recommend this book. You do feel for the author and this is her story.
It's brave of her to share.

Based on the bestselling classic, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls, this workbook uses quizzes, exercises, personal stories, checklists, and other activities to help girls learn about the changes that will take place in their bodies during puberty. What's Happening to My Body? explores these physical and emotional changes in greater detail, but the workbook/journal invites more participation, so that girls can really get involved in the sometimes bewildering, wonderful, and scary transformations that take place as they become women. Written in a peppy, fun style, with a strong emphasis on honest, straightforward discussions, the workbook covers such topics as menstruation, acne, pubic hair, breasts, growing pains, and sex, with such chapter headings as "The Big M," "The Female Sex Organs: An Owner's Manual," and "B.O. and Zits--Is Puberty the Pits?" The information provided and questions asked are smart, sensitive, and highly relevant to girls entering puberty. Questionnaires ask girls to decide what they would do in different situations (Jan's breasts have started to develop, but she lives with her dad and is embarrassed to ask for a bra. What suggestions do you have for Jan?). Women, do you wish someone had given you some remotely useful information when you were an adolescent? Do a girl in your life a favor now and give her My Body, My Self for Girls. And don't worry, boys, there's a workbook for you, too: My Body, My Self for Boys. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

Great!.......2007-03-31
I bought this book when my daughter was nearing puberty. She used it as a reference guide for several years. It opened the doors to many discussions that would otherwise have been hard to get started. It also fostered open communication between us that continues today. Sometimes she still refers to it. As a conservative mother I approve of this book and would highly recommend it.
My Body, My Self for Girls: Quizbook & Journal.......2007-01-10
This is a fabulous first book for girls who are in puberty or are about to enter puberty. It is appropriate for young adolescents to know more about the physical, mental, social, and emotional changes of puberty. Although this book is excellent in explaining and normalizing body changes, it keeps the topics relevant to younger girls. I gave only the "workbook" to my daughter at age 11 and she actually read it. She seemed to really enjoy the quizzes and exercises. Highly recommended!
My body, self, and girls.......2006-11-04
I really liked this book and it taught me alot. At my school is was part of thr curriculm(i go to a all girls school) and it really helped to go over it. But it really helped me understand.
Best Book for Us!.......2003-08-09
I've looked at a lot of books and this one is great,! Unlike other books, it does not mention anything about boys, yet. I feel like for a young girl, "Let's learn about your body first" boys later. Also unlike other books, it doesn't go overboard with talking about a first trip to the gynecologist or anything explicit about sex.
I love the workbook idea so you can compare and see where your at and maybe have some fun at guessing what part of puberty is coming next and which order it is going to happen in. Whether, it's big feet, sweating, boobs, or periods.
I bought this for my 1st daughter in 4th or 5th grade. She's 14 now and she still looks at it every now & then just to see where she's at. Now I'm getting a second one for my other daughter who will be entering 5th grade.
I love it so much mostly because it's only about girls and puberty. I don't want to overburden my girls with more than what's going on with themselves at this age. Eduction about boys & girls starts in 6th grade. I've seen plenty of other books, mostly borrowed from the library, and some go too much into detail, including a few that actually talk about "the act" and exactly how boys & girls go together complete with drawings!
THIS BOOK IS PERFECT!
Lovely and Fruitful!.......1998-07-31
This was a wonderful. The bit about the horses running in the field of corn was my favourite! Sammy the Lamb was my best character. I hated snoopy the snoop, though.

Amazon.com
The title of the first chapter of this workbook, printed in a wavy, spooky font, is "What's Happening to You?" Appropriate, when you think about the emotional and physical changes wrought in a boy's body as he enters puberty. Based on the bestselling classic by mother-daughter team Lynda Madaras and Area Madaras, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Boys, this workbook by the same authors uses games, drawings, photographs, quizzes, personal stories, checklists, and other activities to help boys learn about the transformations that will take place in their bodies during puberty. Similar to the My Body, My Self for Girls workbook, but with a more masculine slant (and obviously, a lot of different information), this is an invaluable resource for boys with questions, curiosity, and a need for reassurance. Topics covered include skin and hair changes, body image, acne, reproductive organs, voice changes, masturbation, and more. Although What's Happening to My Body? explores these issues in greater detail, this workbook enables boys to delve into the nitty-gritty of puberty on a more personal level. One exercise, called "Racewriting," asks boys to write--whatever comes into their heads and as fast as they can--about their feelings about growing up. Then there's the "Test Your I.Q. with This P.Q." true-false puberty quiz. Tremendously useful side features list acne do's and don'ts, ways to cope with erections ("wear baggy pants and long shirts if they keep happening, just remember that it's probably more noticeable to you than to anyone else"), and dangerous side effects of steroids. Written in a lively, nonthreatening style, the authors have placed a strong emphasis on honest, straight talk about the concerns that boys are bound to have as they approach adulthood. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

My Body, My Self for Boys: A "What's Happening to My Body?".......2007-02-07
This book although informative read too much like a science book. I would recommend a smaller but just as informative book titled "What's going on Down there? Questions boys are afraid to ask". It was more conversational and answered the tough questions with entertaining cartoons and candor. I would recommend the parent read the book first, then have the child read it, and then they discuss it together.

Get This one!.......2006-05-22
As an avid reader of Christian books (maybe thousands of them), I ordered this book along with Sheri's Prayers from Your King, and I cried all the way through chapter one. I feel the Holy Spirit has revealed an area in my life : not really believing I am loved - looking for approval from others and God. I am moving toward a new freedom...please, ladies give this book opportunity for God to speak to you.

Book Description
With this critically acclaimed 1940 memoir, pioneering Japanese writer and activist Ayako Ishigaki made history. Restless Wave is the first book written in English by a Japanese woman, introducing Western readers to a largely unknown world; a unique voice; and a writer of great talent, integrity and courage. In exquisite prose, Ishigaki recalls coming of age in a privileged family and rebelling against strict codes of women's behavior. She also traces the political awakening that would force her to flee Japan for the United States and would eventually make her an internationally renowned activist for peace, social justice and women's rights. As The Nation noted, "In lyrical, poetic terms, Restless Wave tells the story of a single individual who lived at a turning-point of history."

Wonderful Unknown Gem.......2006-04-03
I picked this book up on a recommendation from a friend interested in anything Japanese and I'm quite happy I did. If you're sick and tired of reading about geisha, or if you like geisha but are interested in expanding your horizons and reading about the lives and struggles of other Japanese women who haven't been given a story, you owe it to yourself to read this book.
Ayako Ishigaki gives voice in her memoir to post war Japanese women, fighting against the stereotypes and mixed messages sent to them via eastern vs western ideals. What's most intriguing about this is that I can still see this struggle played out today in the way female characters are portrayed in certain manga and anime; it gives a lot of context to modern day stories, and shows just how far Japanese women still have to go to be portrayed as humans and not mere objects of desire/ fetish.
Lest you think this story sounds too high brow, never fear: its easy to understand and read on the subway or after a hard day of work. The writing is simple, clean, and flows well. If nothing else, the tidbits of Japanese culture and traditions (post and pre war) and the personal ancedotes of the author interjected in the story will stay with you long after the last page.
Enjoy *(^_^)*

FROM THE BACK COVER:
You have in your hands the true, daily, blow-by-blow, journal entries of the author as he went through Army Basic Training and Officer Candidate School, concluding with his being called to active duty for the first time on September 11th, 2001. If you have ever wondered what basic military combat training is really like, and what it really does to you physically, mentally, and otherwiseor simply just want to relive itread this book. It is probably as close to feeling the real thing as you can get (short of doing it). Most books about such events are either written after the fact in the past tense by someone who went through it years earlier, or written in the third person by someone tagging along who has no idea what is really going on. This book is different. It's all in the present; it's all in the first person; little has been cut; everything is true; the adventure is real. Enjoy.

Went through same thing.......2006-03-22
I was like the LT here. I took the same route of BCT to OCS in the Guard too. I was whiney to a point too. I came back from Iraq and now I am not that same person. I am sure LT. Mann has changed to. The book is good in telling you what the Guard OCS program is like from day to day.

READ THIS BOOK -- whether mil or not.......2005-09-11
I cannot recommend "To Benning and Back" highly enough. I am currently applying to Army Officer Candidate School and it was the most helpful and informative thing I read. I learned more from Monroe Mann's account of his experiences at Basic Training and Officer Candidate School than I did from any other source and certainly from my recruiter. If you're considering enlisting in the Army, or any other branch of the military for that matter, I would definitely get my hands on this book. It's an invaluable resource.
Even more though, read this book for the inspirational story of one very cool young American. From the gut-punching sincerity of the opening line: "I cried when I saw Saving Private Ryan." to the final appendix, "What the Army Has Taught Me", I know I'm going to go back to this book whenever my own doubts about what I'm doing start creeping up on me. Mann, who is now 1st Lieutenant Mann, and who has been serving in Iraq for more than a year now with the New York National Guard, obviously comes from a comfortable background. He has a broad, varied, international education. He has a large supportive circle of talented family and friends, who appear in his journals in intriguing little snippets of intimacy and affection. He's talented, skilled at several sports, speaks several languages. He has a deep, driving dream to be an actor. Someone for whom the possibilities in late 90's America were pretty much limitless. Instead he puts it all on the line to join the Army...way before there was a 9/11 bandwagon to jump onto.
Used to be idealism and intelligence was a combination our country specialized in. If, like me, you think we're a little short on that combo these days -- from top to bottom -- read Mann's account of his experiences and it'll give you some hope for what's out there. Throughout his story, we get to see a sincere love of America that has nothing to do with the sticky, yellow-ribbon sentimentality that passes for patriotism in this country these days, and startling flashes of a deep Christian faith that has nothing to do with the lame moralism of so much of what passes for Christianity these days either. He's completely honest about the pain and difficulties of military life, never afraid to say he's bored, that he's suffering, or that it just plain old hurts. He's candid about his misgivings and fears about the commitment he's making. And he has no illusions about the frequent limitations and just sheer stupidity of much of the institutional culture he's dealing with. Yet all the way through, he holds on to a transcendent vision of a soldier's calling, a vision of courage and sacrifice that sustains him.
This kid's one of the last of the Great American Idealists, the kind of homegrown Quixote we used to grow a lot of, with the beautiful, slightly nutty dream AND the guts and tenacity and competence to make it reality. If you subscribe to the patronizing notion that only Americans with no other options serve in our armed forces, or if you think that all young Americans with other options are spoiled brats coasting through cushy lives with no sense of service or the greater good, then read this book. If you have a kid who wants to enlist, give him this book to read; it'll inspire him and make him a better soldier, marine, airman or sailor. If you've got a kid who wants to enlist and you're discouraging him, then YOU read this book. Believe me, Lt. Mann is the kind of guy you want your son to be.
Duty Honor Country - Doesn't Come Easy!.......2005-07-19
Monroe - your book, To Benning and Back: The Making of a Citizen Soldier - tells it like it is. Your honesty is what makes it special. Most books on the military experience are so 'gung ho' and you never feel the person's true pain. I felt your pain 'my brotha.' Keep your head down over in Iraq. We want all of our heros back in one piece.
A Great book by an even better Soldier.......2005-04-28
I have had the privilege of knowing Monroe Mann personally which prompted me to read his book. Monroe is the type of fellow who can drift into your life briefly and leave his mark.
His book is a honest uncut un polished journal that speaks to EXACTLY what every young soldier remembers about basic Training. Reading Monroe's book was like taking a walk back in my life ten years ago.
An excellent read for old soldiers and a fine book for those considering service. New troops need to take Monroe's total honesty with a grain of salt. When you live Basic training it seems impossible, until you walk on that parade field with almost 300 years of American history that you are not a part of. Monroe is a fine officer who is credit to the service. If he can overcome his fears, frustration, and challenges to rise from a sideline sitter to a professional of the finest caliber should encourage any reader to seek his or her opportunity to place service above self and find a way a way to bring peace to our troubled world.
Thank you Monroe
HOOAH!!!.......2005-01-31
To Benning and Back's first person depiction of the Army's vigorous basic training program helped me grasp a better understanding of the intense transformation from civilian to disciplined soldier. As a USO performer, after reading this book I have even a greater appreciation for the men and women who choose to risk their lives for this country! It was especially intriguing to learn that Lt. Mann is not only a soldier but an actor!! I recommend this book not only to potential military recruits but to anyone who is interested in gaining greater insight into the brave men and women serving in our Armed Forces.
