Great Gift Idea.......2007-07-18
I bought this as a birthday gift for my six year old son. He couldn't have been happier. Just to show you how interesting it is, I kept it in my office at work so he wouldn't find it before his birthday. I can't tell you the number of people who stopped to read the book and told me how interesting it was. I even had people who asked me for ordering information on the book so they could get it for their children. This book is inexpensive and a great read for all ages. All the little pockets, fold outs, letters and maps are a great touch. The compass on the front is a great eye catcher.
Trim the Sails and Engage Imagination Drive.......2007-06-25
Technically, this is a fictional work; however, I feel more comfortable lumping it in with the family of pre-teen picture books that cover the history of pirates during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a period more commonly referred to as the Golden Age of Piracy. The author uses the story of a fictional pirate hunter chasing an equally fictional female pirate to provide a framework on which to hang tidbits of pirate history.
Like the Eyewitness, Discovery and Kingfisher family of youth picture books, this one is crowded with illustrations and brief passages of historical prose that provide a basic background on piracy suitable for children and those with limited attention spans. There the comparison stops, Pirateology goes well beyond by providing an interactive element with the numerous foldouts, mock notebooks, sealed envelopes with inserted maps and notes, and variety of other interactive items sure to keep the reader engaged.
The prose is not difficult, but does include enough vocabulary to stretch young minds. The artwork varies from a vintage sepia look to colorful original artwork. The overall presentation is excellent and looks reasonably durable. I would recommend that use of the book by those under 9 years of age be supervised to preserve the various ties and foldouts as well as to prevent misplacing the inserts and notes. Bottom line is that this is a fun introduction to the history of piracy during the Golden Age. For those beyond the level of such a children's book I might suggest the various Osprey books on buccaneers and pirates by Angus Konstam.

The coolest book ever for kids.......2007-05-09
I got this for my 7 year old nephew for Christmas last year...and it was really hard for me to wrap it and not open it to play with all of the neat things on each page. There are pirate maps, gold, "old letters" to untie and unravel. What fun for a pirate loving child!!! (or grown up for that matter). by the way...he loved it :)
Book Description
aptain Kidd has gone down in history as America's most ruthless buccaneer, fabulously rich, burying dozens of treasure chests up and down the eastern seaboard. But it turns out that most everyone, even many respected scholars, have the story all wrong. Captain William Kidd was no career cut-throat; he was a tough, successful New York sea captain who was hired to chase pirates. His three-year odyssey aboard the aptly named Adventure galley pitted him against arrogant Royal Navy commanders, jealous East India Company captains, storms, starvation, angry natives, and, above all, flesh-and-blood pirates. Superbly written and impeccably researched, The Pirate Hunter is one ripping good yarn.
Download Description
Three hundred years after his adventures at sea, Captain Kidd is still the best known pirate in the English-speaking world. But what historians, novelists and the general public do not know is that Kidd was not a cardboard-cutout villain, a Blackbeard with firecrackers in his hair. In fact, he wasn't even a pirate. He was a successful NY sea-captain hired by the Lords of London to chase pirates, and the man he wanted to capture more than any other was a long-forgotten rogue by the name of Robert Culliford, who dogged Kidd throughout his career, and who was, in many ways responsible for Captain Kidd's reputation as a rogue, as a pirate. Zacks takes readers from an execution by hanging in London to the home of William Kidd, master mariner, at 56 Wall Street in Manhattan, and then to the high seas with Captain Kidd, on a covert mission to go after the bounty of five pirate ships, a mission cooked up and later disavowed by England's King William. Zacks brings to life the real story of Captain Kidd, a man who met a tragic end for crimes he did not commit, and who led another life on land, with a beautiful, wealthy wife and daughter in New York. Set in England, Madagascar, the Caribbean and many other exotic locations including the quite uncivilized Wall Street of 300 years ago, this is a tale of adventure, betrayal and courage, a book that will stand both as biography as well as with such classic tales of adventure as IN THE HEART OF THE SEA. The writing is quite extraordinary - you are with these men on their adventures. The reason for this is that Zacks followed Kidd's trail around the world, from libraries in England to remote villages in Madagascar, and the result is a tale that is more fantastic than fiction.

Best of ye Best Pirate Book.......2007-08-05
I was unable to put it down. You will love this "Pirate Book". A word of warning, when you begin reading make sure you don't have anything planned for a while because it is VERY hard to stop once you start!
17th century world portrayed vividly........2007-07-23
The true story of Captain Kidd is first of all a totally believeable work of nonfiction. The historical era of life at sea and the blurred and flawed objectives between the East India Trading Company, the Royal Navy and the privateer at sea as well as life within the pirate world is amazing. Equally amazing is the world of the legal system in the English colonies in America and back in London. The power politics alone is worth the price of admission.
In this case fact is much stranger and makes a far more harrowing story than fiction.
A Page Turner.......2007-05-13
Very readable right from the start. Historically enlightening and brilliantly researched- a very strong insight into the blurred boundaries of privateering V piracy....Kidd becomes flesh and bone with a strong beating heart - all due to a narrative which is highly personal. It's not often with historical works that one can feel right There not only in the Place but in the Mind. Through great story telling but also through Kidd's own words from historical documents one truely gets a sense of what drove Kidd and his actions.
Captain Kidd Comes Alive in this Portrait of Pirate History.......2007-03-19
"The Pirate Hunter: The True Story of Captain Kidd" by Richard Zachs is an incredible work of nonfiction. He truly makes history come alive in this detailed account of Captain William Kidd's ill-fated scheme to capture pirates in the waters off of Africa, India, and the Middle East to make (illegal) money for his rich English backers, including the King of England himself.
Here is a pirate story that blows away all sorts of pirate myth and cliché. The major argument made is that Captain Kidd was no pirate himself, though he died a pirate's death and lives in history as one of the most notorious pirates ever. Poor Kidd was the victim of mutiny by real pirates, double-handed dealings, hurt pride, vicious gossip, and his own tragic mistakes. You can't help but feel sorry for the man as he drunkenly awaits his legendary fate with the gallows.
Zachs uses all sorts of historical documents, including Kidd's own writings, to retrace Kidd's incredible 3-year voyage, imprisonment, trial, and death. Along the way, we learn in vivid detail about life in colonial America and Britain, life at sea, and the many different cultures and customs the sailors (or pirates) encounter in different parts of the world, from Africa to Indonesia and back. It is almost exhausting in its detail, but it makes for a good story that you can practically see, hear, and smell.
The most fascinating aspect for me were the sections regarding Kidd's trial and the ridiculousness of the British court system. Even more fascinating was the crowd's take on public executions. I couldn't stop giggling at the horrible thought of people throwing dead cats and dogs, covered in feces, into the crowd for the fun of it. Truth, it turns out in this story, is stranger than fiction.
Anyhow, I recommend this book for anyone interested in pirates or for those of us who just want to read a good story from our past. It is history as it should be read - informative, intriguing, and fun.
Excellent!.......2007-03-11
This book is an excellent read. I couldn't put it down. Captain Kidd and the other characters in the book come alive in this book. You feel the emotions of the characters. Unlike many books telling real history, Mr. Zacks doesn't get the reader bogged down in rote facts, but rather engages with action and suspense. The reader comes away with a sense of what it was like to live in Captain Kidd's time, and the forces shaping the history around him.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
Most people know about the infamous Captain Hook, but few know of his adopted son Robin. Raised to be a merciless looter like his father, Robin Hook rebelled against his upbringing and vowed to fight piracy instead of joining in! With the help of the Lost Children, Robin Hook sets out on an adventure at sea in the name of justice, courage, and freedom.

Colorful Pirate Fantasy.......2005-07-29
The colorful, period illustrations compensate for the uneven storyline. Young Robin Hook, marooned by pirates, sets out to "bring pirates everwhere to justice." Leading a band of children and wild animals, they defeat the fierce looking pirates.
The gaps in the plot may not matter too much to youngsters who like pirates. The Peter Pan lifestyle of the youngsters may appeal as well.
Well illustrated.
Blast my eyes!.......2005-03-23
This is a pretty great story for kids who are fascinated by pirates. The hero and his crew are all children, and their battle against piracy and plunder is noble. My five-year-old son has most of it memorized: "Blast my eyes!", "Blow those babies back to kindergarten!", "Who's for a fight?" And the talking parrot makes him collapse in giggles, along with the gristly sausage hanging out of Captain Thatch's mouth.
The story does feel as if it's condensed from a larger source, even though it's so transparently a pastiche of Robin Hood, Peter Pan, etc. that the larger source could only be the entire genre of childhood adventure. However, it seems like it should have been about twice as long as it is--to an adult's eyes it feels rushed and hazy on some of the details. But very possibly that's part of what kids will like, as it gives their imagination some room to breathe.

sensual and intriguing pirate tale...........2006-02-23
this is my first Jennifer Ashley. I'm usually disappointed with most pirate romances-most being heavy on sex scenes but not much story. I'm happy to say this book was HIGHLY sensual but had a great storyline as well.
Those who like their romances with adventuresome women, alpha males, and a hero/heroine who are older (no blushing school room miss here) then I highly recommend this book . It's on par with Amanda Quick, Johanna Lindsey or Lisa Kleypas style and scope.
Great book despite the "old school" clutch shot cover too-LOL!
5 stars:)
It Was Okay . . . 3 Stars.......2006-01-18
THE PIRATE HUNTER is book two in Jennifer Ashley's "Pirate series" and it is much darker than THE PIRATE NEXT DOOR, its predecessor. Sadly, Ashley's change in pace disappointed me; for when I bought this book, I anticipated the bold fun found in the parent book.
James Ardmore was born a southern gentleman. As a firstborn son, Ardmore knew southern Carolina wealth and class. However, destiny took him away from that privileged life style. James Ardmore spent a lifetime searching the high seas for his brother's killer; James Ardmore was a pirate hunter. He was a meanspirited, cruel stalker. Men feared him. Women adored him. James Ardmore was a legend.
Diana Worthing was an affectionate daughter, a loving mother, and a happy widow, and she disliked James Ardmore intensely. As far as Diana Worthing was concerned, the man could die. For if James Ardmore were DEAD, the world would be free from his tyranny, his vengefulness, his smoldering embraces. Yet, James Ardmore would not die; he would not go away; instead, he stole Diana Worthing's passionate heart.
This was an interesting change of pace for a book series. This was a very interesting change of pace for an author to take! Book 1 was successful; Book 1 was fun. Book 2 is not. Not only is it dark and somber, it has loose ends floating everywhere. As a reader, who read Book 1, I strangely felt "out of it!" Not only was I adrift in the story, but I never truly felt the passion (even though Ashley harped it was everywhere) and where was Ardmore's pirate crew? In Book 1, Ashley described these delightful characters so well . . . and here . . . they were abandoned! THE PIRATE HUNTER's storyline missed them; I missed them! Oh, what could have been! THE PIRATE HUNTER comes through as just an okay read.

A Good Read.......2005-04-18
Having read the Pirate Next Door and The Care and Feeding of Pirates I knew most these characters and really liked them.
I enjoyed learning more about James and his complex personality.
The thing that I really didnt care for was the relationship between James and Alexandria. I got the feeling from The Pirate Next Door that he admired her, but really gave her attention to "irk" Grayson. In this story it was made out to be much more. And also the way that Grayson flirted with Diane made me think less of his marriage with Alexandria.
I also agree with the other reviewer that the ending should have been about James and Diane, not Grayson and Alexandria. I wanted to know how James acted towards his new son and where they finally settled.
I still enjoyed the book, as I do all of her books.
This was much better than Pirate Next Door.......2004-07-17
After reading pirate next door - I didn't think I would read Ashley's next book but on a whim I picked it up. I read it in one day - just couldn't put it down!
Why not 5 stars? It has nothing to do with the writing - which was great! I just didn't like how she portrayed the hero and heroine from Pirate Next Door. It seemed to me that Grayson was a little to entranced with Diana's beauty and that given the opportunity he would have slept with her. It seemed like the only time Alexandra came to his mind was when he was reminded of her. If they were real people I think his behavior would have been quite telling. I would think that while he was off helping the government and leaving Alexandra home that he probably was sleeping with other women. Which even though I didn't like Pirate Next Door - I hate to think that the hero of that book was possibly still sleeping with other women. I mean we know his behavior with women before his marriage was horrible - we are even given examples of it in this book.
The last thing - I wish the epilogue was an actual epilogue showing James and Diana's life and not Grayson and Alexandra. I don't think we really needed to have James and Diana's relationship discussed by Grayson and Alexandra at the end.
Another Very Good Book By Ms. Ashley!!.......2004-06-14
This was another very good book in Ms. Ashley's Pirate series. This is James book (we met him in 'The Pirate Next Door') Our fearless pirate hunter is still on the trail of Black Jack Malloy's the man that killed his brother. His search takes him to the island of Haven and back into the arms of Diana Worthing. James had a rather colorful first time meeting with the strong willed Diana, one that he has not forgotten despite his best efforts. He's almost positive that she would rather shoot him then save him which is too bad since he has been shipwrecked and washed up on her island hidaway. And need of help on top of that!
Diana can't believe her eyes when she spots James Ardmore washed up on her beach. The urge to finish him off is great but instead she saves his retched life and opens her life to more turmoil that only James can provide. If only she didn't desire the rogue so much!!! James does all that he can to seduce the strong willed Diana. While doing this he looks for Jack. Little does he know he's finally near his enemy but what happens after a promise is broken, and a hunt comes to an end? A happy Ending...Not quite or rather not right away. Where would the fun in that be?
This was a little darker then the earlier read. James is not as light hearted as Grayson was and this is carried over into the story. Diana is a strong willed hoyden and at time was a bit over the top. In any event these two have great chemistry and the story is fun and fast paced. I look forward to the next installment of this series.

Drama! Thrills! Romance! All from classic comic strip.......2005-05-16
Volume 7 of the Flying Buttress classics library reprints the April 1938 - September 1938 continuity.
After defeating the Warlord Klang in the previous episode the Dragon Lady gave Terry, his servant Connie, and the beautiful Burma a car to drive to Hong Kong. On the way they pick up a mysterious child with a moneybelt, and wind up in a city besieged by "the invader" (it was then politically incorrect to refer directly to Japan's invasion of China!) Cheerful Hunter Yurk brings the quartet to his surprisingly un-shelled home, where they are surprised to run into Pat Ryan and Big Stoop in Yurk's secret dungeon. The gang manage to reunite the mystery child with her wealthy father, Mr. Smythe-Heatherstone. He is the target of fortune-hunter Drusilla Crail, who loses the cat fight when she rubs Burma the wrong way. Drusilla's revenge turns a yachting expedition into yet another pirate cruise.

One Dynomite Read - ... Buccaneering Doesn't Get Any Better.......2002-06-29
I'm surprised the ... community has let this book go out of print and isn't clammoring for more books from M. S. Hunter.
The Buccaneer is a well researched novel. Hunter gives immaculate historical detail of the sanctioning of privateers during the colonization of the Americas in the late 1600's and their evolvement to buccaneers and pirates. This is not some stale story, but swashbuckling adventure at its best.
The tale is narrated by 'Tommy the Cutlass' a youth begging escape from his father's tavern in the Carribean to adventure, fame, and fortune on the high seas. Aboard the 'Red Witch' as a crewman, he and his crewmates are dedicated to harassing the enemies of England, and relieving said enemies (whether ship or land colony) of as many valuables as they can. Tommy rises from shipmate to captain, finding love along the way in the form of an Ashanti warrior.
Little known of the privateers and buccaneers of the latter 17th century is that many were fugitive runaways and escaped slaves who capitalized their freedom on the high seas. Hunter weaves this fact into his nonstop tales of adventure, incorporating them equally into the lust and love that many buccaneers developed for each other, there being few women among the colonies, and fewer still on the isolated high seas.
Some may find offense at Hunter's use of racial slurs, but they are in context with the times and held to a minimum. Even his lead character and narrator 'Tommy the Cutlass' finds distaste for them. Hunter weaves a fascinating but thoroughly credible tale of adventure, interracial love, and at times descriptive ribald lust between Tommy and his Black lover, Ashanti prince Ozei Oyoko, (Ozzie the Spear), and does it beautifully within the context of the era.
Irritating are the interruptions Hunter imposes on his readers to inform, clarify, and educate, but educate, they do. I found myself searching for tickets to St. Vitus (San Vito), so real does he create the place, and enticing does it become. For those interested in books about buccaneers or the caribbean, this book is excellent. For those interested in ... fiction, dynomite ... adventure, and interracial love stories, it's a must have.
A fascinating tale of gay buccaneers.......2001-08-18
It's too bad this book is out of print. The stories and lives of Caribbean privateers (careful, don't call 'em pirates) revealed in this book are indeed intriguing. Some of M.S. Hunter's fabrications such as the existence of an Italian island in the Caribbean are a bit baffling, yet his rendering of a fairly utopian interracial (albeit a bit misogynist) buccanneering society is captivating. Though, granted, I picked this book up because of my interest in gay fiction, the book would be of interest to a general open-minded readership. The book's erotic passages are thankfully short enough not to interfere with the story which is far more interesting. Because of this novel, I am much more interested in reading other literature concerning the adventures of buccaneers.
