Book Description
As parents our greatest calling is the raising of our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Yet for many Christian parents, the promise of God's blessing to His people and their children is not well understood. Douglas Wilson's Standing on the Promises brings clarity, providing parents with an insightful handbook on biblical childrearing. It's not another paint-by-numbers method for parenting; it's about about grace and covenantal blessings. Pray for your children, stand on God's promises, and experience the joy God intended for your family.
Customer Reviews:
Best parenting book after 12 years of parenting.......2005-04-23
If I have read one book on parenting I have read 30 and this is the creme de la creme. I have read the majority of Doug Wilson's books and once again he tells you things you already know deep down inside as being truth, but he expands on them in such a profound way that really helps you see the role that God has placed on us as parents. Douglas Wilson helps to show why it is so important to follow the direction of Gods teaching. We have to answer for the lack of parenting, in todays times it may seem archaic to parent this way and it is tough if you do not start out this way but I see a difference in my own children and I know when they are an adult they will have a biblical out look on the world instead of conforming to it.
Parenting with hope.......2003-08-25
This book is a wonderful treatise on the scriptural foundation for hope in parenting and the heavy call that God puts on us as parents to fulfill His promises in our family. It does not turn a blind eye to the choices our children may make as they grow older. But our culture has turned so far away from the providence of God that we mistakenly believe that hope is only in the individual choices each of us make and in those our children make. This book is a corrective to that notion, centering us back on the hope that God has placed the solitary in families. We are not alone. Our children are not alone. And so they have a gift of spiritual growth that they would not have if they were raised in heathen homes.
I recommend this book to all parents looking for guidance as to the foundation of hope upon which they parent their children. I believe that in our culture of blind humanistic optimism and individualistic Christian pessimism, this is an important topic. http://www.jeffreyclong.com
Excellent Book!.......2002-08-09
This is an excellent book, I highly recommend it to any one with children!
The best Biblical book on child rearing I have ever read!.......2000-05-18
I could not stop reading this wonderful book, it is ballanced, and Biblical. I love the positive approach and the emphasis on loving children, and creating a pleasant atmosphere in the home.
I have recommended this book to everyone I know who has children, and I highly recommend it to Amozon.com readers
The Greatest Book Written on Raising Children.......1998-09-18
As a pastor, and a father of four, I have always hoped for 1 book, definitive and courageous, to give out to families in desperate need of guidance for their family. I needed a book to cover the hard facts, without compromise... This is that one book. Every pastor should own this book, for the good of his family, and the good of his flock. In the Christian home, teenage rebellion, although common, is not normal. It is not acceptable. It does not have to be this way.

Book Description
As she eagerly awaited the birth of her first child, Mallika Chopra began to craft a unique gift that would express her profound loving commitment to the baby growing inside of her. 100 Promises to My Baby is that gift-one that reflects her deep awareness of the sacred responsibilities of parenthood. Here the author shares the vows she made to help her child-and all children-grow up feeling cherished and secure, look at the world with wonder and curiosity, and learn spiritual values that enrich life and contribute to making the world a better place. Accompanying the 100 promises are short essays, reflections, poems, and stories that have inspired the author throughout her life-and that will inspire readers to think about their own lives, values, and beliefs, and what they would like to pass on to their children.

100 Promises to My Baby.......2005-11-03
Although I bought this book as a gift, I did glance through the various chapters to develop a feeling of the author's message.
I found the book beautifully written with a depth of feeling that could only come from the love of a mother for her child. There was a spiritual dimension moving through the pages of the book which enhanced the message and the feeling of closeness, yet the words were those of common sense and practical nature.
These thoughts, so well spoken by Mallika Chopra, are the thoughts that all mothers wish for their children. Mallika Chopra shows the talent and the gift of her father.
Completely Unrealistic.......2005-09-10
I found this book completely unreaslistic, but what can one expect from an author who was raised in, and continues to live in extreme privilege? I grew tired of reading about Mallika Chopra's life of servants, nannies, and cleaning ladies. I'm quite certain that if all mothers in the world (including those in North America) led lives of such privilege, they too could write books such as these with completely unrealistic expectations about what it is to be a mother. I also did not find anything she said particularly deep, inspirational, aware, thought provoking, or compelling (as other reviewers would lead you to believe).
If you wish to read a feel-good book that sets you up for some sort of "perfect" idyllic (i.e. unrealistic) picture of motherhood, than you'll love this book, though I hear that you can read the same in most Reader's Digest magazines.
Best Baby Book for the Mind and Spirit.......2005-07-21
This book really sheds some light on what it means to be a GREAT parent and what it takes to be a great parent. There are lots of wonderful thought and suggestions, yet they do challenge you to carry through on a few. It is a wonderful book and makes a great baby shower gift. It beats the heck out of giving a boring gift certificate. Chopra has opened my eyes not only to what gifts I can give to my son, but it reminds me of all the wonderful gifts that my parents and grandparents have given me. VERY UPLIFTING!!!
Fantastic book for any mother, or expecting mother.......2005-05-31
I purchased this book for my wife, but really enjoyed reading it myself! This is a great book for anyone who is expecting a new baby, or just as a reminder to anyone with a young child about what a true joy parenting is.
Promises -- Promises!.......2005-05-12
I was skeptical about this book at first (it was a gift), but I found it to be a real treasure. I read it in shorts gulps at night after my now-7-month old drifted off to sleep. It's a beautiful and heartwarming--and very real--emotional tribute to motherhood. I just finished reading another heartwarming--but also very funny--love letter about parenting, "I Sleep At Red Lights: A True Story of Life After Triplets," by Bruce Stockler, which you might also enjoy

No one likes being called crazy. But Dr. Martha Stout, a psychological trauma specialist, invites all to question their own level of mental acumen in The Myth of Sanity. Her logic makes sense: all humans experience fear, especially during youth; individuals' response systems determine how their brains catalogue traumatic experiences and trigger "dissociative" coping strategies. Those who experience horrific situations like abuse, catastrophe, or grueling medical procedures fare the worst over time; their dissociative behaviors can manifest themselves as situational fatigue, "lost" hours or days, or split personalities.
Drawing from 20 years of treating such patients, Stout presents several composite characters to illustrate all levels of dissociative behavior: from the very serious DID (dissociative identity disorder, or "switching" among distinct personalities) to the nearly universal "brief phasing out" (losing a thought or getting "caught up" in something). As each patient undergoes psychoanalysis, Stout highlights clues for identifying trauma sufferers and lends advice to their loved ones. Tending away from scientific data or supportive research findings--while tending toward a fiction-lover's prose--The Myth of Sanity focuses on personal stories and Stout's zealous admiration for responsible therapy patients who wake to a sanity unclouded by past fears. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
Why does a gifted psychiatrist suddenly begin to torment his own beloved wife? How can a ninety-pound woman carry a massive air conditioner to the second floor of her home, install it in a window unassisted, and then not remember how it got there? Why would a brilliant feminist law student ask her fiancé to treat her like a helpless little girl? How can an ordinary, violence-fearing businessman once have been a gun-packing vigilante prowling the crime districts for a fight?
A startling new study in human consciousness, The Myth of Sanity is a landmark book about forgotten trauma, dissociated mental states, and multiple personality in everyday life. In its groundbreaking analysis of childhood trauma and dissociation and their far-reaching implications in adult life, it reveals that moderate dissociation is a normal mental reaction to pain and that even the most extreme dissociative reaction-multiple personality-is more common than we think. Through astonishing stories of people whose lives have been shattered by trauma and then remade, The Myth of Sanity shows us how to recognize these altered mental states in friends and family, even in ourselves.
"We only think we're sane, says this Harvard psychologist. . . . The befuddled, normally sane masses can learn a lot from the victims of grave psychological abuse." (The Dallas Morning News)
Customer Reviews:
Understandable and Accessible.......2007-09-26
I really liked the way the author imparted the impact of childhood events on the adult personality imprint. She did a great job of covering the gray area between an idyllic childhood and one of extreme abuse. Minor incidents can explain seemingly complex, inexplicable adult quirks and behaviors.
Invaluable insight into the Human Condition.......2007-07-21
I was recommended this book by a friend, and I'm sorry that I didn't discover it much sooner. Unlike many books about psychology, Martha Stout dispenses with the intellectual jargon and presents the key concepts in clear, concise layman's terms, using many practical examples and scenarios that demonstrate the multiple forms that dissociation and dissociative identity disorder (DID) can take. While some of the composite case studies (created to preserve the privacy of her patients) seem somewhat sensationalist at face value (weeks of "missing time", multiple personality "switchers" etc), they do highlight the very real and documented symptoms that some sufferers of DID experience, as well as the traumatic experiences that create the condition.
Stout very clearly indicates that while the more extreme cases are less common, there are multiple levels to DID which can result in virtually invisible patterns of behaviour that can co-exist with a more or less "normal" life. She explains how aberrant and out-of-character dissociative actions are rationalised with labels like "absent-minded Professor" which enable both the sufferer and the people in their lives to ignore the problem, resulting in a tragic waste of potential and needless degree of confusion and heartache - especially where spouses and children are concerned. In reading about these various levels of dissociation - daydreaming, habitual, intrusion, "switching", demifuge, fuge etc - I was able to immediately identify certain mild dissociative states that have perpetually recurred in my own life. It also seemed quite obvious to me that dissociative states are epidemic in Western society - something that Stout makes brief commentary upon in the closing chapters of the book.
Stout also places a very healthy emphasis on personal responsibility being the deciding factor in recovery from the various DID states. She points out that people who value safety and self-protection above all other concerns have a higher probability of treatment failure, and that a conscientious and competent therapist will always seek to nurture that part of a person's essential self rather than enabling them to perpetuate a "victim mentality". I think this is good advice for those considering psychotherapy and evaluating a therapist, as unfortunately it seems that the psychiatric professions are replete with "sinners", as well as "saints". Let the patient (not just the "buyer"), beware!
For those who consider the idea of therapy too daunting, Stout also recommends various techniques that can be helpful, especially in combating mild and habitual dissociative states. Writing a journal and practicing certain types of meditation are two examples she gives of methods that can be applied by people in their daily lives to help them begin to struggle with the self-defeating effects of dissociation.
With warm compassion and occasional gentle wit, Stout has written a book that in my opinion is one of the missing "textbooks" about human life that people should be given as early as possible in the educational system. I see one of the key problems facing humanity in this day and age as being the lack of adequate psychological knowledge, and that addressing this issue could have beneficial flow-on effects in ways that we cannot begin to conceive of. Perhaps one day we could then claim a place in the universe as an ethically, and not just technologically, advanced species of being.
True Sanity, and not a "myth of sanity" could help us get there. I feel it appropriate to thank Martha Stout for helping point out the way.
Clear, Interesting Read.......2007-07-14
Stout explains a range of dissociative behaviors that everyone falls into-- from getting into a movie to Dissociative Identity Disorder. Unlike most books of this sort, it doesn't read like someone's thesis. It is engaging and easy to read-- even when on the verge of dissociating. :) This is a must read for anyone interested in dissociation!
Great Read - Englightening.......2007-06-27
Myth of Sanity makes you realize that everyone has likely been exposed to traumatic experiences growing up. It also allows you to identify behaviors that you or others may have that are a result of that trauma.
Highly reccomended and useful tool for self-study.
A must read!.......2007-06-23
If you think that a book on disassociation and the psychology of trauma survivors has nothing to do with you, think again. Through a series of interesting composite case studies, Dr. Stout shows that disassociation has many shades and colors, and it is present in virtually all people to different extents. The traumas that led to it are not necessarily childhood abuse. They could be as benign as getting lost for the first time or witnessing parent fights at a young age. The resulting disassociation dulls our lives and makes us go through everyday in some kind of a hazy fog cloud. Getting to know about it and being aware of the disassociative states in oneself is the first step that anyone who wishes to reclaim his true life can take.

Product Description
Risk and Promise is designed to help prospective adoptive parents navigate the often puzzling array of information and decisions attendant to the process of international adoption. The purpose of the book is to help prospective parents better understand the risk factors as well as the protective factors a child from overseas is presenting, support the parents through the decision-making process, and guide them during the period of transition in their lives as their new child moves into their family. The premise of Risk and Promise is that the success of any adoptive placement is a function of not only the capabilities and needs of the child, but also the expectations, characteristics, and lifestyle of the adoptive family members. It is important that prospective adoptive families assess their tolerance for uncertainty, for the potential challenges that the child may bring, and the parents ability (financial and otherwise) to modify their lifestyle in order to accommodate the demands of a child who may be quite challenging. Along these lines, a secondary objective of this book is to enlighten prospective adoptive parents regarding the extent of what may be required of them if, indeed, they are to fulfill the commitment that they are making in taking on the responsibility for a child whose needs will unfold over time.
Customer Reviews:
Adoption lawyer's observations.......2007-08-12
Next June I will have been working in the adoption field for fourty years. I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. I believe this book is a MUST for anyone contemplating a foreign adoption and should be considered by anyone adopting a child, foreign or domestic. It contains critical information to be considered in accepting a placement. Too often I have seen adoptive parents make emotional decisions which they later regreted. If one has made the caring decision to adopt a special needs child and rationally evaluated the impact on the family and themselves as adoptive parents, then I encourage the adoption. However, when one is in a foreign environment, exhausted, anxious to get back home, then prospective parents can make poor decisons and rush into an unsuitable placement.
This book discusses the health hazards, what to look for in a child and provides basic information to help in evaluating the placement. Dr. Chasnoff is a champion in helping parents and children. I am very grateful for the articles he has written and the experience and wisdom he has shared with me, my collegues and adoptive parents.
I highly recommend this book. I am recommending my clients buy and read it.

sweet story.......2005-03-05
This is a sweet picture book all about the special bond between a mother and a child. It tells of all the hopes and dreams that a mother has when she brings a child into the world. The book features a mother promising lots of things to her newborn child. She promises to love the child and respect him or her as well.
The illustrations were breathtaking and the babies featured in the book looked so sweet!
I would recommend this book for mothers and young children to read. It has a very positive message.
Awe-inspiring!.......2004-07-16
This is a beautifully written and lovingly illustrated book about the nurturing bond that develops between a mother and child. It is also a book filled with feelings of adoration, which lend themselves to the mystery of that special spirit known as life.
When I first noticed that David Danioth had illustrated this book, I knew right away that it would be beautifully done. Mr. Danioth's talent knows no bounds. Then, as I read A Mother's Promise, my heart was filled with a tenderness that is hard to explain. This feeling of sensitivity and softness was enhanced by the stunning illustrations, which were so realistic that I wanted to reach my fingers out to caress the baby's tiny face.
While preparing to bring new life into the world, mothers everywhere whisper promises to their unborn child. They know that the world can be a perilous place, with unknown terrors, but promises that come directly from an adoring heart become inspiring and hopeful messages of love.
*****This awe-inspiring book is guaranteed to stir memories in the heart of every mother, and will become a treasure that can be handed down to every child.*****

"I promise that I'll love you, whatever may befall."
Each promise is one sentence on a beautifully illustrated double spread. Michael Frith is a well known portrait artist in England. This is his first illustrated book for children. Elizabeth Laird has written many books for children and you might enjoy: Secret Friends or Kiss the Dust.
The simple powerful words will help you share the importance of commitment, caring and love with your child.
A Book Of Promises.......2000-07-11
A Book Of Promises is a lovely reminder of what complete trust our children have in us and the awesome responsibility we have toward our children that comes naturally with parenthood. The text is simple yet powerful, printed in larger print on large pages. Michael Frith's English background is evident in his delightful watercolor portraits as he captures the tender expressions and gestures of his subjects. This Book Of Promises would make an excellent gift choice for a new parent or parent-to-be, as well as a wonderful addition to your own collection to reminisce over or share with your own special little someone.
