Book Description
Ah, there's nothing like a relaxing vacation on the beach! I would spread out by the crystal-clear water with a good book. What more could a mouse want? At least, that was the plan. But somehow, my vacations never seem to go according to plan. Instead of a beautiful seaside resort, I found myself in a fleabag hotel that was falling down around my ears! Oh, would I ever be able to relax and enjoy my vacation??

Great book for reluctant readers.......2007-05-12
Bought this book for a reluctant reader in the third grade. He likes it because certain words are in various typesettings and bold to highlight the action. He now requests other Geronimo Stilton books because he finds them exciting.
Surf's Up Geronimo.......2007-03-06
~*Surfs Up Geronimo*~
Surfs up Geronimo is an awesome book!! The main character is Geronimo Stilton. He is a Mouse!!!
The author if the book is Geronimo Stilton. The book is fantasy.
Geronimo Stilton (the mouse) is the main character. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure books! The book is like the Magic Tree House books because they are really adventurous.
If you want to see where Geronimo Stilton goes on vacation and what he does on vacation you have to read the book.
If you decide to read the book I hope you like it!!! If you really like the book then you should read the whole series!!! (There are a bunch of them)
Book Description
$39.95 hardcover * 1-58685-213-2 * May 10 x 10 in, 224 pp, 150 Color Photographs, Rights: W, Sports Once the sport of Polynesian kings, surfing embodies the ultimate encounter between man and nature. Played out on the beaches and breaking waves of the world's continental fringes, surfing is the epitome of a classic cult of freedom and individual expression-an arena not only for survival but for grace under pressure, style, and artistic invention. Yet surfing is more than just riding the waves-it's a lifestyle, a state of mind, a subculture with its own codes and heroes. In Stoked: A History of Surf Culture, surf journalist Drew Kampion traces the evolution of the modern beach culture and the challenging, beautiful sport that gave rise to it. From its Polynesian origins and the early days of Duke Kahanamoku's beach boys, to the California-style surfing cult that exploded in the 1960s, to the international pro circuits and radical big-wave contests of today, Stoked tells the compelling story that has inspired entire genres of music, movies, fashion, and art. Drew Kampion is a writer, editor, and photographer who lives on Whidbey Island near Seattle. He graduated from California State College at Northridge and is a former editor of Surfer, Surfing, and Windsurfer magazines. Kampion is an avid surfer and writes about the sport regularly.

A complete history of the evolution of surfing with great photos!.......2007-06-01
i consider myself as much of an expert on the history of surfing as one could be without actually having lived through the early days, and while reading through this book I was not only entertained from cover to cover, but actually learned a few new things! The facts are presented along with interesting points colorfully explained. The photos are worth the price of the book alone, but the text adds so much more. This it the best history of surfing i've ever read!
Stoked on STOKED!.......2007-05-26
Kampion's writing on about surf culture always makes me feel like a kid again. All his books are keepers.
A National Surf Treasure.......2007-05-26
Drew Kampion has been chronicling the surfing subculture since the start of the modern era. With "Stoked!" he's produced THE defintive history of this "thing of ours." (As a surf-writer myself, Kampion's stylistic influence has been indelible.) There is no one else in his class.
This guy is a national surf treasure. If you surf, read him. (If you don't surf, please don't start.)
A Lifetime of Research.......2007-01-27
I just finished the book - New Edition. I am stunned by the immense levels of research and photographic documentation that went into it. He got every pivot point along the surfing path over the last 60 years.
Even with the best research tools it would have taken many years to create. Further, only one person - Kampion - could have done such a remarkable job. In his case, it took a lifetime of research. This book will become one of my ten favorite books of all time.
A visually oriented historical survey.......2003-09-19
Now in a new and expanded edition, Stoked! A History Of Surf Culture by writer, photographer, and surfing expert Drew Kampion (who was also a former editor of "Surfer," "Surfing," "Wind Surf" and "Wind Tracks" magazines) is an informative, adventurous, visually oriented historical survey of a wildly popular sport -- and the people who embraced and developed it. Gorgeous full-color photographs stir visions of wind and wave, while the accessible text traces the love, lore, and sometimes tragedy of this exciting pastime down through the years. Stoked! is enthusiastically recommended -- especially for surfing enthusiasts!

Great for anyone learning to surf, guys as well.......2007-05-07
I bought this book for my 11 yr old daughter who started surfing with me a couple of years ago. When she was finished, I read this book to see how it was. It was one of the best surf books I ever read. I think that the fact that it was geared towards women by a women, it made it more relaxed and fun. We (men) tend to get to serious and lose the point of it. Anyway, Louise (the author) was playful as well as insightful. You can tell by this book that Louise really loves surfing and her whole souful lifestyle. Her kind and warm personality shown through by her writing.
I would highly reccogmend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to surf or just be part of the relaxed surf culture.
P.S. I bought a copy for myself and refer to it all the time. Great job Louise. I am now a big fan of yours. Aloha

I wish I had this book when I started surfing! .......2005-06-07
this is an excellent book for surfers of any level, but focuses on beginners. There's a great history of women in surfing and profiles of today's up and comers. The book is well written and well designed, there are great photographs throughout. I wish I would have had this book when I started surfing, I had to learn the hard way! It's great to see the women of surfing getting the attention they deserve.

BEST BOOK AND MOVIE OF ALL TIME.......2007-10-09
This movie and book was great. The DVD with the book is a MUST SEE! I love it. I buy it for all my movie buffs, family and friends. Oh! I forgot to mention..... my son is Erick Miller and he helped make the movie! Rock on Erick! Love, Mom
Just plane fun.......2007-09-03
originally i really didn't have any intentions of seeing "surf's up" in theaters, i was just going to wait it out and rent it. then i stumbled upon the making of art book and changed my mind. what i really love about the book is the playful attitude it takes to the whole "art of/ making of" genre. it goes beyond showing you concept sketches and the likes and shows how they constructed scenes, gives extra little insights on character's personalities, and through in some behind the scenes jokes that didn't make it into the movie. all in all just a really enjoyable read.
Amazing Book.......2007-07-18
This book is simply amazing. One of the best art books released in years. Great character design, visuals, and even lots of fun extras including a making of dvd, postcards, poster, stickers, and mini books. This is truly an inspiration. I work as an animator and took it to work to show fellow artists, and they ALL bought it on the spot. This will be in my art book archive for years to come.
Why can't other production books be this good?.......2007-07-14
I seriously can't find anything wrong with this book. Every production book should be this good. Every other production book that I have purchased in the past has always been lacking something, and left me feeling like I was kinda ripped off. Almost like they went around the office and said, "everybody just give me some of your stuff because we're going to throw some stupid book together". Not this book though. This one actually makes me want to look at it over and over again. It makes me want to watch the movie again. Forget Pixar and their somewhat good movies. This movie was a hundred times better than any Pixar movie (well I did like the Incredibles). This movie was produced by a company that will always over shadowed by Pixar, but by my opinion, Sony has produced a way more visually advanced film that everybody over looked because it had penguins in it (I kinda thought the same thing when it first came out). The book shows alot of that amazing imagery and goes a little further for the old fashioned pencil and paper artist (like me). It's a real insperation for any fan of the movie. This book has alot of extras like postcards and posters and stuff like that nature. It makes the book feel alot like a scrapbook of the making of the movie. I feel very happy to have book like this in my collection. The only thing that I would have maybe added is the actual breeds of penguins that the characters were modeled after. I just looked that up on a Google search and found that one out. But all the same it would have been cool to see a side by side comparison.
Truly gives you a look into the love that went into this movie!.......2007-07-11
First, let me state that this book is HEAVY. Don't expect this to be a typical flimsy Art-of book. You really get your money's worth when you buy this beautiful, beautiful book. Not only is the cover vivid in both color and character, but it comes protected in a plastic slip-case which just blends seamlessly with the cover. Fantastic!
The insides are chock full of gorgeous concept artwork and 3D models of all sorts, varying from the characters themselves to the locations. Each is disected and you're shown so many different ideas and alternate looks. It's really impressive to see how it all comes together, and how you can find similarities even in beginning artwork.
What I loved about this book is that it went through each character and added even more depth to each one, not only in their looks, but their backstories, their ambitions, how they ended up where they're at. The book doesn't just show you pencil sketches, it still keeps the character in mind and tells you about them and why they're doing what they're doing. That's especially refreshing to see.
If you're a fan of this movie, ESPECIALLY if you're a fan of this movie, this is a no-brainer. Buy it. It's worth every penny. You get a wealth of information and artwork, you get 2 posters, a DVD, postcards, mini-books inside, stickers...this is an amazing work of art unto itself.

He also listens to his mother's story that encourages him to keep trying. With his own persistence he finally succeeds. This surfing story was written from the heart for young, (3-8) up and coming surfers. Each page is filled with brightly colored North Shore realism, allowing kids to relate to kids. A fun and inspiring picture book, each page has a border across the bottom, depicting Hawaiian foliage common to the area. A back glossary describes the leaves and some of their uses.

Many reasons to buy this book:.......2004-10-23
Terrific book for many reasons, including:
Interests young kids- Story and themes are age appropriate for 2-7 or 8. (My kid is 2.)
Vocabulary is probably appropriate for a reader with 1 or 2 years experience.
Very good to excellent artwork.
Proper English grammer, with some surfing lingo and Hawaiian words thrown in to give some color.
Representation of modern native Hawaiians in a positive light.
Imagination and visualization positively demonstrated.
Main character defines, expresses, and works toward accomplishing a goal.
Family members help the main character define the necessary steps to achieving his goal, but the character takes responsibility for their accomplishment.
Family support.
Father not present -- representative of single-parent household or traditional stay-at-home mom? (Two older brothers represent very positive male role models.)
No negative images (etc. hitting, jealously) or language (hate, stupid, etc.) , just positive.
A Great Family Book, Fun and Educational.......2003-01-11
This Hawaii Book Publishers Association Award of Excellence winner operates on a number of levels. The first is the straightforward Oahu North Shore story of Kimo and his desire to surf like his big brothers. To do so, he must learn patience and discipline, he learns that something attained comes through a process, sometimes long. There also is an opportunity to learn from his mother, and to gain the knowledge that parental advice isn't so far removed from kids. There are also a number of fun and educational extras inside.
Kimo asks, and his brothers make the collective decision to teach him to surf, and they do it together, as a family effort. But Kimo first must learn to swim. After all, surfing is an ocean sport, with the best waves usually quite a ways from shore, so swimming is a vital survival skill. So, first Kimo is taught discipline in learning to swim well, and with endurance.
Next Kimo must study the surf, the break of the waves, the movement of the water, so he gains an understanding of the waves he wants to surf, and so he learns the essential respect of the sea.
Then his brothers surprise him--he'd been concentrating so hard on his training, he'd lost track of his frustration--with his own surfboard. It's a family longboard hand-me-down, the same board they learned on. This is a great physical reinforcement of the family effort to get Kimo surfing, ohana all the way.
Finally, his mother offers advice from her younger surfing days. She teaches him the self-confidence he will need to catch and ride his first wave on his own, in front of the older, more experienced boys. It is, after all, his mother's advice which finally gets him up and gets him his first ride.
The illustrations are wonderful, with perfect color, content, and level of detail to communicate life in non-Waikiki Hawaii. There are a number of small inserts in the illustrations which are referenced with text at the back of the book that serve as teaching points for the flora and fauna of Hawaii. This is accompanied by a glossary of different things seen in the book, from Hawaiian plants and flowers to a recipe for banana bread, as well as a simple Hawaiian pronunciation guide. The front and back inside covers also feature a simple map of the Hawaiian islands to situate the story. These are very thoughtful educational touches.
I strongly recommend this book for all small children, whether from Chicago, Siberia, or Polynesia. Its solid, well-presented themes and lessons of family and personal development transcend surfing and the warm waters of the Pacific.
Wonderful book!.......2002-02-26
This story is sure to inspire children and adults. Kimo wants to learn to surf like his brothers, but first his mother makes sure he can swim well. The story teaches respect for the ocean and positive problem solving skills. Kimo finally gets his first surfboard and with persistence and determination he stands up on his first wave. The story also shares Hawai?i's wonderful cultural heritage and is educational in an interesting way. The artwork is beautiful.

Summer Heat!!.......2007-02-11
This was the first time I read Nina Bangs I'm glad I did. I have brought all her books.
Misleading Cover- One normal romance & two paranormal.......2006-10-02
I picked this one up because I'm a fan of 'Bad Boys' type anthologies. I thought this one was going to be like 'Perfect for the Beach' anthology, boy was I wrong. Only the first story is 'normal' romance. There is no back cover summary and now I regret not coming to amazon and reading the reviews before I spent my $14. The other two stories are 'paranormals' with ghosts, vampires etc. There ok, just not my cup of tea. I like straight forward romance, no witches or spells required.
Just beware before you buy.
Another Sexy One for Nina!.......2006-08-04
Another sizzling, sexy paranormal from bestseller Nina Bangs. Have only finished her story of this anthology as yet, but it took only one sitting! Once again Nina entwines two hopelessly mismatched lives in her wonderful, comedic voice.
Kristin Hughes is an investigative reporter. Taurin Veris is a hunky vampire who craves privacy. They know of- and actively dislike- each other, although they've never met. A few years ago Kristin's expose` on vampires in San Antonio was so effective, all the vampires there, including Taurin, were ripped from their homes by the publicity. Taurin responded by moving to Galveston and spending his spare time shadowing Kristin's career and sabotaging it as much as possible.
Yes, there's no love lost between these two- until cosmic forces send mischief their way. Kristin gets wind that most of the fantasies being fulfilled in the Castle of Dark Dreams in Galveston contain kinky sex. Sniffing a huge expose` she checks into the hotel to find out for herself.
Taurin's been given the assignment of babysitting the reporter and making sure she doesn't find out anything too damaging. Once he realizes the reporter is Kristin Hughes, he has more worries on his mind than the kinky sex expose`. What if she finds out most of the staff are vampires and demons? And how could such a horrible member of the paparazzi end up being so beautiful and fun anyway?
The dirt Kristin uncovers will make her an award winning and famous reporter- only she has to get beyond her attraction to Taurin and bury her feelings of guilt. And the conflicts are only beginning!
Highly recommend this quirky, hysterical beach read for a sexy adventure into the world of paranormal characters, imaginative plots that keep you guessing, and hot, sweaty, sexual tension. ooo la la!

For paranormal readers!.......2006-07-29
As the other viewers have stated, this anthology is more geared towards paranormal lovers because only 1 story was a contemporary romance. I do not like paranormal stories and was mislead by the book's description and cover. Before you say I should've known MJD & Nina Bangs are popular paranormal authors, I've read and enjoyed their contemporary/historical romance and wasn't expecting "otherworldly" stories in an anthology with Janelle Denison. I feel like I want a refund from the publisher. Lesson learned: I will wait until the book is reviewed by our fabulous Amazon readers before buying.
more like 4 1/2 stars...........2006-07-07
Nina Bangs, MaryJanice Davidson, and Janelle Denison team up once again for yet another enjoyable anthology with SURF'S UP.
Janelle Denison opens the anthology with "Hot and Bothered". Jewelry designer Claire Reissing is enjoying the sight of the ocean and her sexy neighbor, Shea O'Brien, after a recent divorce. However, Shea has a secret in his past that could derail any chance for their love to grow.
"Hot and Bothered" is a great beach read. The story itself is fairly simple but Janelle Denison does a great job at developing the relationship between Claire and Shea. Claire's cat, Zoey, is also adorable and cat lovers will relate to her antics.
MaryJanice Davidson's "Paradise Bossed" is a sequel to "The Fixer-Upper" from MEN AT WORK. Jack and Cathy are now happily together and vacationing in the Cayman Islands with Cathy's best friend, Nikki. Nikki dies in a bizarre snorkeling encounter with a stingray but her ghost doesn't leave. Psychic Tom Fillman is called in and he and Nikki begin a very different type of relationship on the spirit plane as Tom has to leave his body to physically interact with Nikki.
Where does MaryJanice Davidson get her ideas? The concept of a ghost having a relationship with someone who is astral projecting is quite simply brilliant. The initial scene between Nikki and Tom is hilarious as Nikki is conducting high school cheers; Tom is understandably not impressed by a grown woman cheerleading!
"Hot Summer Bites" by Nina Bangs returns to the Castle of Dark Dreams where cosmic troublemaker Sparkle Stardust is at it again. This time she is testing her protégée, Deimos, and he is charged with uniting vampire Taurin Veris with investigative reporter, Kristin Hughes. The catch- both already dislike each other, sight unseen, after Kristin's prior report on the San Antonio vampires caused many to have to leave their homes and Taurin responded by attempting to seriously damage Kristin's career.
Nina Bangs always delivers an incredible story and "Hot Summer Bites" is no exception. Deimos has been a recurring character in her stories and he really hasn't had a chance to shine until this one. The climax of the book is vintage Nina Bangs and creates an indelible impression of Deimos in this reviewer's mind. The wereshark scenes are also simply fabulous and one can only be amazed by how Ms. Bangs continues to keep this series seem fresh and new.
SURF'S UP is a well-written with excellent stories by three wonderful authors. In fact, the only concern this reviewer has is the marketing of this book as the cover and blurb on the back of the book represent this book as a contemporary anthology of beach reads. While all three stories are contemporary and involve the beach, Nina Bangs and MaryJanice Davidson's stories are paranormal and will appeal more to fans of this genre. Regardless, readers should enjoy this anthology as it is certainly well worth reading!

Buy it if you are a collector.......2005-11-19
I recommend this book for all collector's of Beach Boy music. It is very scholarly and well-researched.
It is full of facts about the various discs, even foreign discs and rare records. There is no price-guide - which may be a problem for some readers. But if you are after a guide that lists every record that you can buy then this is the one for you.

The definitive Beach Boys reference manual.......2000-04-07
Every recording done by the Beach Boys, their friends and relations through 1981 is documented in this textbook. Cross-referenced by song, title, performer, this work includes session logs, chart positions, bootleg information, and enough background material to make a fan's head swim.
Who recorded "Had To Phone Ya" first - The Beach Boys or Spring? Who sang lead on "Sail On Sailor"? What songs were recorded for "SMiLE" but never released? The answers are all here.
Brad Elliott knows the works of the Beach Boys inside and out. This book is not for the casual "sun n fun" fan, but for the dedicated Beach Boys scholar. A must-have that is well worth the price.

...the last book *sniff*.......2002-09-08
What a great way to end the series... a huge slowpoke, while the book is halariusly funny, and full of humour it wasn't what i was lead up to believe, Jesse and James are cute but they didn't really show much romance between the two, although a lot better than what the tv's doing. there wasn't much AAML but i can live with that.
Yaaaaaaay!!.......2001-11-11
I basically can say I agree with all the other positive reviews here, I just wanted to add another good review. And TRUST ME, this book is the number one must-have for Rocketshippers! You will not be disappointed! It has everything- humor, romance, excellent illustrations, a good story (based off the anime), and there is a GREAT battle between Ash and Drake at the end!
Gotta Collect Them All!.......2001-07-19
Surfs Up Pickachu graphic novel, (part of a series) is by far the best reading material I've found out of all other Pokemon reading out there and comes highly recommended for good clean entertainment value and excellent illustrations! If you don't buy into any other Pokemon merchandising or reading materials buy into this! It has the sickeningly sweet critters children the world over have come to adore, but I feel is also apt to capture older readers interests as well compared to other books based on Pokemon because it actually has a decent plot and some quality behind it. Recommended if you are checking out Pokemon for the first time or already an avid fan!
Good for older fans.......2001-05-04
If you like pokemon but are sick of the juvenile dumbed-down tv series and movies, I highly recommend this and other Japanese Pokemon manga. Though young pokemon fans can enjoy this too, it's a great treat for teenaged and older fans. Unlike the show, it actually assumes the reader has some intelligence. Even though there is a lot of censoring, the level of american content editing is considerably lower than the series. The art is very good too. The pokemon are more realistic and less cartoonish than in the tv series. Highly recomended to Pokemon fans of all ages.
THE BESTEST ENGLISH POKEMON THING IN EXISTANCE!!.......2001-03-05
I would like to recommend the entire manga series by Toshihiro Ono to *ANY* older Pokemon fan. It seems to be more mature than the show, and the stories and art are adorable, funny, and very enjoyable. SURF'S UP, PIKACHU- the final book in the series- is definitely a great ending to an excellent series. It ties up the story with a nice relationship between Team Rocket (who Toshi makes absolutely kawaii), and Jari-booi (the twerps are actually likeable in Ono's series! ^__^). I'm sure all Rocketshippers (J&J romance supporters) are buying this for a very specific reason, but that's not the only cute part. There's basically nothing bad about this manga- even though it's very censored, it's still completely enjoyable. Buy it! It's worth the very small amount of money amazon.com charges!!
Book Description
In many ways, Sherman is a guy's guy. He eats everything in sight. His so-called smooth moves with his girlfriend sink like a stone. And his happy-go-lucky manner endears him to all of his friends. What makes Sherman atypical is the fact that he's a great white shark whose pals include a smart-aleck hermit crab named Hawthorne, an intellectual fish called Earnest, and a sensible sea turtle known as Fillmore. For more than a decade, the daily adventures of Sherman and his coral companions have delighted readers of Sherman's Lagoon across the globe. Now Sherman and his sea urchin buddies take us for another swim down memory lane with Surf's Up, bringing together Sherman's Lagoon strips from 1994 and 1995, many of which have never before been published in book form. This roll-back-the-clock collection picks up where the successful Greetings from Sherman's Lagoon collection left off, offering the strip's loyal longtime readers the opportunity to catch up on classic Sherman tales of yesteryear. Whether you are a faithful follower of the silly yet sophisticated strip or new to Sherman's underwater world, Surf's Up will be a book you can't put down. Once you've seen the world through the eyes of Sherman, you'll never look at marine life the same way again.

Great Stuff.......2007-06-27
I really enjoy Sherman's Lagoon and all the characters. I sent lots of funny books to my brother when he was stationed in Baghdad, and he said one of his sergeants was addicted to Sherman's Lagoon: he was more excited about getting another book than about getting home-made cookies! Now THAT's something!!
