From bestselling author Anne Rivers Siddons comes a bittersweet and finely wrought story of friendship, family, and Charleston society.

At twelve, Emily Parmenter knows alone all too well. Left mostly to herself after her beautiful young mother disappeared and her beloved older brother died, Emily is keenly aware of yearning and loss. Rather than be consumed by sadness, she has built a life around the faded plantation where her remote father and hunting-obsessed brothers raise the legendary Lowcountry Boykin hunting spaniels. It is a meager, narrow, masculine world, but to Emily it has magic: the storied deep-sea dolphins who come regularly to play in Sweetwater Creek; her extraordinary bond with the beautiful dogs she trains; her almost mystic communion with her own spaniel, Elvis; the dreaming old Lowcountry itself. Emily hides from the dreaded world here. It is enough.

And then comes Lulu Foxworth, troubled daughter of a truly grand plantation, who has run away from her hectic Charleston debutante season to spend a healing summer with the quiet marshes and river, and the life-giving dogs. Where Emily's father sees their guest as an entrée to a society he thought forever out of reach, Emily is at once threatened and mystified. Lulu has a powerful enchantment of her own, and this, along with the dark, crippling secret she brings with her, will inevitably blow Emily's magical water world apart and let the real one in -- but at a terrible price.

Poignant and emotionally compelling, Anne Rivers Siddons's Sweetwater Creek draws you into the luminous landscape of the Lowcountry. With characters that linger long after you've turned the last page, this engaging tale is destined to become an instant classic.

4 out of 5 stars Surprised at How Much I Enjoyed It..........2007-08-30

Sometimes when I read books of this genre, I am thinking "ok, a quick read - not too concerned about literary quality just entertain me for several hundred pages."

Well, Sweetwater Creek not only entertained me, it inspired and delighted me.

It is the story of Emily, a young girl who is on the edge of young womanhood and carries the baggage of a beautiful mother who left her, an uncommunicative father who doesn't want to deal with her, and a fairly recent suicide of her brother who actually "gets" her, who still "speaks" to her via poetry.

Emily's family home is a Dog Farm and her Boykin Spaniel is a powerful dog. Their relationship is central to the story as young and mysteriously ailing and well connected debutante Lulu Foxworth appeared at the Farm for rest and rejuvenation.

The characters are well-crafted, for the most part. Emily, Elvis and Buddy are particularly well honed - as well as a "cameo" appearance of Lulu Foxworth's Grandmother.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Low Country family story.......2007-08-18

Being familiar with the "low country" and the area she writes about in most of her books, I enjoy reading Anne River Siddons. I felt this book was good, but not her best. My personal favorite of hers is "Colony". That book I could not put down, this one I could. I felt some areas of the story dragged on and some of the lesser characters should have had more story time. The background characters were very important to the main character's flaws and issues, and I feel they should have had more
developement and prescence in the story. Perhaps the movie will?

5 out of 5 stars Fantasitc.......2007-08-05

One of my favorite Anne Rivers-Siddons books. Right up there with Colony and Peachtree Road.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-06-07

This novel made me edgy. Descriptions ran on unnecessarily and the vocabulary was stilted...made me think she got to a word and went to the Thesaurus rather than just "keep it simple". Her earlier books were much, much more readable.

5 out of 5 stars Coming of Age.......2007-04-05

The twists and turns in this novel will keep you from putting it down. Get away from it all for a bit with this entertaining story.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage L'Amour - 'Sweet water' is sweet reading.......2001-01-01

Has Louis L'Amour ever written a bad book? If so, I have never read one, and in fact this is one of his best. The setting is deep in Indian country - 200 miles west of Fort Laramie and right from the start the master of the western genre has your concentration as much as a wagon master going through hostile territory. In fact that's how the story starts with a grisly massacre of a wagon train party. The slaughter, however, was not the work of Indians but rather a vicious bunch of owlhoots who have made off with a missing wagon, a fortune in gold and the daughter of Major Devereaux. The wild card is Lt. Tenadore Brian, who is riding with the missing wagon against orders. In the hands of the master story teller those few ingredients are enough to weave a engrossing drama of the Old West that makes the reader keep going as relentlessly as Major Devereaux's career in the cavalry or with the determination of Lt.Brian to get the crooks - and the girl. For fans of L'Amour, and westerns in general, 'Under the Sweetwater Rim' is indeed sweet reading.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not great.......2006-06-27

I am a big fan of Mrs. Garlock. I read Midnight Blue and can say, it's one of the best. I was a little dissapointed with this book. The story initially was about Trell, but soon became about Trevor. This story failed to keep my interest, but I loved the characters.

As another reader put it, I would like to see something about Cassandra.

4 out of 5 stars First Dorothy Garlock Book.......2004-06-16

This is my first Dorothy Garlock book and I will be looking for her other books to read. I got a little tired of the bad language in the book and the end was a little disappointing. I would have liked for her to have gotten them married and for the other brother to have come home. However, it kept my attention all the way through and I read it in two days. She is a good writer and I am looking forward to her other books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent historical romance set in 1884 Wyoming Territory.......2002-05-13

Wow! This was one excellent story! I loved every word of it, and was thrilled to discover it was the story of the wonderful twins, Trellis and Travor, first introduced in Midnight Blue by Dorothy Garlock. Pack and Shannon Mara Gallagher are mentioned throughout the book, and my only complaint is that we didn't get to read about their arrival at the end - since we knew they were on their way to meet the twins' new wives! After reading some of these reviews, I wondered if this book would be as good as the other books I've read of Ms. Garlock's... it was as good or better than any of them that I've read!! The arrival of Travor, Trell's twin, did not arrive as corny as another reviewer mentioned... he arrived before Jenny and Trell spoke their love for each other. This was an excellent book!!!

4 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2000-08-18

I just finished this book and loved it...all the different charactors kept the book interesting I couldn't put it down. The ending was a little disappointing, but the rest of the story made up for it. I hope that there is a book to follow about Cassandra and Whit.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2000-05-21

I fell in love with the twins in "Midnight Blue" when they were teenagers. I'm glad they got a story of their own. I enjoyed all the different storylines in the book. I do hope there will be another book about Cassandra or Whit.

5 out of 5 stars HUMOROUS - WITTY - MIXED-UP EMOTIONS!.......2006-09-19

Took quite a while to understand Eden Devlin's angst about her father, Sundance, apparently also a hired gun.

Burke Kerrigan agreed to seduce Eden before he even got to know her. Yup! a thousand dollars would come in handy.

The Sweetwater Stock Growers Association, headed by Oak Westbrook had brought in the gunfighter, Kerrigan to settle the nesters hash. They wanted the rustling stopped.

The Sweetwater Ladies Social Club was headed by Persia Davis, wife of Big Ben Davis of the nesters section. The ladies kept a division between them when they met as they sure couldn't agree on much until Eden came up with the idea of using the conjugal rights to weild a bit of power.

And wouldn't you know a couple of kids, Bliss Davis and Hadley Westbrook had to fall in love and complicate the matter. Were they old enough to marry?

Every time Kerrigan approached Eden, a too-tall, kind of plain-jane, red-head he found more and more to like about her but no, he was not going to even consider marriage. Not after what he had been through.

They slung out witty, humorous jibes at each other which just powered the attraction. But Eden was a 29 year old spinster and wanted marriage and children. She was seriously considering Sheriff Reeves Felton if he ever decided to pop the question. So was Kerrigan's seduction successful? Ha!

The characters were great - the secondary romances add more to the plot - the gang of rustlers was a hoot! - The buckshot hurt, whoaa! - the shootout action was a bit smudged - Would have liked to find out if Eden was a crack shot. Would have like to learn more about the dangerous Sundance.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- M - have enjoyed her other books.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable..........2006-07-07

I enjoyed this book quite a bit but it was a little too slow for me. The storyline was good but slow & there wasn't much action. This was the first Joan Johnston book that I've read & I really liked her style so I'll go back again but I hope the next book I choose will make me not want to put the book down. I'd like a little more suspense & mystery. Although there was a mystery in this book it wasn't one that I cared too much about. I was glad to see though that I didn't figure out who the bad guy was. That kept me guessing & then when it was revealed I was wondering how I hadn't figured it out. If you like a nice slow romance & don't need all the action then I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Western Read!!!.......2004-11-28

I love historical romances but I normally don't favor those with a "western" theme. However, "Sweetwater Seduction" is definitely a KEEPER!!!

The heroine, spinster schoolteacher Eden Devlin, is smart and spunky and provided a number of laughs.

Burke Kerrigan is a gunslinger with a heart of gold. Ruggedly handsome yet boyishly charming, I couldn't help but picture him as Jack Hughman.

The chemistry between these two was only slightly overshadowed by the battle of sharp wits that ensued between them throughout the book.

Laughs, likeable secondary characters, and a few tugs on the heartstrings (I cried at the end *blush) - I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Lysistrata in the Wild West .......2004-10-27

In 1880 in Sweetwater, Wyoming Territory, the ranchers and the farmers are on the verge of war. The ranchers assert that the farmers are stealing their cattle; the farmers declare that the ranchers are destroying their fences allowing their cattle to roam onto their land and devastate their crops. Neither side will bend.

Disgusted with both groups and worried about her students especially the safety of the children of both sides, too tall and too tough for any male, spinster schoolmarm Eden Devlin borrows a concept from the classic Greek play Lysistrata. No sex until the dumb males come to their senses and end the hostilities before someone gets hurt. The ranchers hire gunslinger Burke Kerrigan to capture the rustlers and offer a bonus of one thousand dollars if he seduce Eden and thereby end the boycott. As Burke begins to uncover who is behind the troubles, he and Eden fall in love, but can a cynical gunslinger and a prim teacher find anything in common permanently?

Lysistrata in the Wild West is a terrific tale starring two likable individuals who are not quite the extreme stereotypes that everyone believes of both of them. The story line is typical of the range war theme, but is freshened up by the lead couple and a solid investigative subplot as Burke takes nothing at face value including the ranchers' insistence that the farmers are the rustlers. Fans of Joan Johnston will cherish this fine story while the award winning author should gain new recruits.

Devil's Gate--the very name conjures difficult passage and portends a doubtful outcome. In this eloquent and captivating narrative, Tom Rea traces the history of the Sweetwater River valley in central Wyoming--a remote place that includes Devil's Gate, Independence Rock, and other sites along a storied stretch of the Oregon Trail--to show how legal ownership of a place can translate into owning its story.

5 out of 5 stars Very Worthwhile Reading.......2007-05-12

This well written book provides historical depth on the Oregon Trail as well as interesting reading that gets an important message across about historical truth. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars History with a perceptive twist.......2007-03-22

At times history can be a Gatling gun of fact and speculation and cause the reader to separate truth from fiction. The underlying theme of Tom Rea's fine work is that given a certain geographical area (in this case Devil's Gate along Wyoming's Sweetwater River), it is the land itself that owns the true stories of space and time. People simply tell them, sometimes to fit their own needs.

Recruiting and interweaving stories from days gone by of this region, whether it be John Fremont mapping the territory, experiences of Oregon Trail emigrants, the Mormon handcarters, mid-nineteenth century Indian wars, Billy Owen's surveying or Hiram Chittenden's engineering for dam sites, to feuds with neighboring ranchers ("Cattle Kate" lynching), water rites, grazing laws, up to the present-day, this is a gifted undertaking of connecting historical meaning.

Enjoyed the stories. Benefited from the insightful viewpoint as well.

      4 out of 5 stars Wyoming History.......2007-03-16

This books does a good job of summerizing many historic events in Wyoming's past to a very unique and sometimes forgotten place. It was interesting to read accounts of some of these historic events and some not so historic and obscure events and how this country tied into them. It was an enjoyable read of history but also posed an underlying troubling trend today. It is a very interesting "history" book in that aspect.

4 out of 5 stars a very powerful story of love and faith.......2007-04-24

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Tanya Bolton has a lot to deal with. Her husband, Tom, was recently killed in a prison brawl, leaving Tanya and her physically handicapped daughter, Crystal, to pick up the pieces. As if that wasn't enough, something is bothering Crystal, turning the once cheerful and driven young woman into a silent and morose child. If money weren't so tight, Tanya would never think of renting the room above the garage to a perfect stranger with everything else she has to worry about.

Chance Taylor is fresh out of jail for a crime he did not commit and hides a secret about Tom that could hurt Tanya even more. He is in Sweetwater to pay a debt he believes he owes Tom and to make up for past mistakes. What better way to do so than by renting Tanya's little apartment? The last thing Chance needs is a romance with the widow of his prison-mate and one who in spite of all the troubles she faces still retains a very strong faith in God. Chance gave up on religion a long time ago but it could be Tanya is exactly what he needs.

In Tidings of Joy, my second book by Margaret Daley I've read, once again I find she is not afraid to tackle sensitive subjects in her novels. This time the issue we face is bullying. Bullies come in all shapes and sizes, but generally have the same reasons for their actions. Through this story, Crystal is suffering at school because of the fact she is stuck in a wheel chair. Chance too had to face his own bullies when he was in prison, though not as much focus as we see with Crystal is put on his previous circumstances.

The growing relationship between Tanya and Chance is beautifully done. We see her hesitance to get involved with someone new, made all the more difficult because of the fact that she loved Tom deeply, even knowing what he did to put him in jail. Not to mention she has Crystal to think about and is unwilling to do anything that may hurt her. Chance struggles with the fact he was close friends with Tom in jail and therefore has no business being attracted to Tanya. His circumstances are even further explored as we learn why he was in prison and the other, deeper internal agonies he faces every day. This actually comes to play a key role in the latter half of the book.

There were really only two things I didn't really like in Tidings of Joy. Throughout the novel, we learn of Crystal's talents in artwork, specifically portraiture. This is very important to her, making up a large part of her personality and is a skill she got from her mother. But Tanya was harassed mercilessly about it as a child and she spends far too much time bemoaning the teasing about her pride and joy she received growing up. So because of Crystal's enjoyment of the same activity, Tanya is convinced Crystal should keep her artistic ability to herself to prevent the same thing happening to her. I felt this was way overdone and did not need so much focus placed on it. My only other issue was I thought Chance kept his Big Secret about Tom from Tanya for far too long. There were plenty of other issues throughout the story that could have provided the necessary conflict to their relationship.

In spite of my two minor complaints, Tidings of Joy is a very powerful story of love and faith. We all need love in our lives and faith, too, is important. Tanya's strong devotion to God and her church brought her over many hurdles she could never have conquered on her own. Chance too needs faith and when he comes to accept God into his life once more, his true healing can finally begin.

I wish, wish, wish this book would be recommended reading for all junior high and high school students. The manner in which Margaret handled the bullying issues in the story were excellent. Very touching story by a master in the craft of fiction. Heartwarming characters that stayed with me long after I finished the book. BRAVO, MARGARET!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational!.......2007-01-10

I love the Steeple Hill Love Inspired Series of books. Margaret Daley is one of my favorites who writes regularly for LI. She alaways tells a good story with faith and Christian love all tied into it.

4 out of 5 stars A Christmas visit to Sweetwater.......2006-10-29

The characters of Margaret Daley's "Tidings of Joy" immediately absorbed me into their lives. Chance--recently released from prison for a crime he didn't commit--comes to Sweetwater to pay back the debt he feels he owes to his cellmate Tom who saved his life. Tanya, Tom's wife, is struggling to make ends meet as a single mom while battling her own fears and guilt over the past. Crystal, Tanya's teenage daughter--paralyzed in a riding accident and now wheel chair bound--battles not only the normal insecurities of growing up, but bullying and prejudice at school.

Chance's struggle to understand how God could allow him to go through what he did, and his difficulty believing he can be a welcome part of a community once again, is understandable and written with both sensitivity and realism.

This is the final installment of "The Ladies of Sweetwater Lake" series, but you don't have to read the earlier books to enjoy this one. I hadn't, but the secondary characters in "Tidings of Joy" were such a special part of Chance and Tanya's story that I want to go back and read each of their stories as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Ladies of Sweetwater Lake romance.......2006-10-19

Life has been hard for Chance Taylor. He was sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. He has been released, but now he has to start over. However, he can't escape his past. Tanya Bolten has had her own problems to overcome. Her husband, Tom, died in prison, leaving her with a daughter to raise. Tanya needs the money, so she agrees to rent her garage apartment to Chance. She never wanted him to become part of her life, but in spite of her better judgment, she begins to depend on him.
Crystal, Tanya's daughter, is confined to a wheelchair. Crystal is a talented, lovely young girl, but a few of the kids from her schol have been harassing her. In addition, some of the townspeople don't want Chance in their town. Tanya tries to defend him, but Chance has a secret that may destroy their blossoming relationship.
This is a tender love story about two people struggling to overcome their past and live a normal life. Bullies come in all sizes. Whether it's kids in school picking on a girl in a wheelchair, or adults determined to drive someone out of town because he's different. Margaret Daley has done a good job of making us aware of the problem. You'll see the hurt, feel the pain, and be warmed by the love as Chance, Tanya, and Crystal learn to rely on God and on each other.
