5 out of 5 stars Telling is a Risking Business, but a Morally and Proper Business.......2007-02-28

Five stars, way up to the sky!

What a wonderful book. My angel bought this book for me a couple of weeks ago and we both thought it was great. I have bipolar with psychotic features (Bipolar I) and indeed there is a great stigma in our society about mental illness and particularly with the psychotic based mental illnesses (paranoid schizophrenia, bipolar I, psychotic depression and post-partum psychosis - a total of 8 million US people).

This book was a bright spot for me because it has been a great struggle for me to talk about it publicly, but I know deep down it is a just and proper struggle and I must do it. The book discusses others' struggles which are similar to mine. The more of us who can talk about it and do talk about it, then the better it will be for us and society in the future.

But for us, freedom of speech ain't free. Just since I started talking publicly around 6 months ago, I have had to up my daily lithium dose from 600mg to 900mg (to keep my mania under control), and my Zyprexa from 5mg to 10mg (to keep my psychotic symptoms at bay), and have had to add Ambien, a sleep aid so that I am able to get plenty of sleep. With these proactive measures I have been able to talk openly about it, including other posts here.

Because of the stigma that this book so eloquently discusses, I did not go in to get help for a long, long time. I had eleven manic/psychotic episodes over a 24 year period before I asked for help. Then I got this diagnosis and the proper medication and counseling to combat it. I'm not cured, there is no cure for this stuff yet, but I have the best treatments available. I have learned all I can about this illness and it is better now and I can accept it for what it is. It is caused because my brain is not able to properly regulate adrenalin, dopamine and serotonin levels on its own. The medications bring my levels back into the norms of sanity.

Like others in the book, I have looked at this illness and have taught myself not to fear it. And to not look at it as a weakness. No fear, no weakness. I can accept the years and years of what was my unknown tormenter and predator. I have learned to deal with the accompanying horrific memories and the PTSD and accept it.

And as I look around my room and notice the red monster on a horse in one corner and the dark rabbit monster in the other corner, they no longer scare me. But I respect them, for I have them in my Zyprexa freeze. Frozen, indefinitely. But they are real, for if I stop taking my Zyprexa, they thaw out after about 2 weeks and come back to life. I've learned that lesson. But now I know that I can control them, and not the other way around. And I have gotten myself well enough now so that I can tell others about them.

What are they? Are they demons... a bogie monster, perhaps? Phantoms? The grinch? I don't think so, because I can control them now. I think they are a cumulation of all of my deepest paranoid fears which flood over the damaged brick wall in my mind. And the subconscious thoughts spill over and flood my conscious mind with awaken nightmares. The meds repair this brick wall and shut off the voices and paranoid delusions.

The sooner we can make these illnesses mainstream, like the other severe chronic incurable illnesses (diabetes, paralysis, cancer, etc.), the better off humanity will be. Better for those of us with these illnesses and better for the rest of everyone else in society. This book makes great strides in this direction.

And I talk. Because when the doctor tells you, "since you did not get help and treatment when it first started, when you were 17 years old, now you are permanently disabled. Because with each severe manic/psychotic episode, you never come back to 100 percent. So now after 11 of them, you are running at 50 percent disabled and cannot work a job with others."

It is my hope that we can make it better, so that others don't travel the road I have traveled. This book helps that struggle. I urge others in my boat to follow in my footsteps. This book will help you do that.

5 out of 5 stars The Reality of Most Living with Mental Illness.......2002-07-20

If you have battled clinical depression or any other mental illness Otto Wahl's "Telling is Risky Buisness" will hit home in a painful way. Wahl reveals what most sufferers experience, the tension between fighting a terrifying illness while maintaining your integrity to non sufferers who fail to understand.
An important book.

    Book Description

In this fascinating insider's account, an American woman who became an investor alleges that irresponsibility, incompetence, greed, and fraud at Lloyd's, the world's most glamorous insurance enterprise, have caused the company to lose $12 billion in the last ten years. Lloyd's of London is not simply an insurance company; it is a society comprising thirty thousand Names (roughly 10 percent of whom are Americans) - private individuals like Elizabeth Luessenhop who accepted the risk of unlimited liability and pledged all their wealth to backing the insurance policies written by Lloyd's. The beauty was that the Names didn't have to put up any money to receive their profit share. As long as the premium calculations were sound, everybody prospered. But the 1980s were bad years for Lloyd's - and for the Names who backed its business. It was also a time when the Society of Names grew by 50 percent to cover the disastrous losses the company was beginning to incur. Risky Business, written with veteran financial writer Martin Mayer, is a detailed account of how the mismanagement of Lloyd's has affected thousands of American investors who, like Luessenhop, sought low-risk, long-term security. Luessenhop and Mayer take us inside a unique business institution and show us that the ramifications of a possible Lloyd's failure will be severe - and felt worldwide.

    2 out of 5 stars What a difference 22 years makes..........2006-08-30

I am a huge Nora Roberts fan, but it is evident in these early works what a difference 22 years of writing has made for her.
These are so-so short stories that show hints of her current style without the polish.
Risky Business and The Welcoming were okay - nothing special - but could have used a little more character development. Okay as a short stories go.
Storm Warning was definitely not her best effort and could have used about 100 pages of character development to explain the history of the two lead characters - especially the male. (Maybe his character was indicative of the time it was written in and the style used back in 1984.)
All in all an interesting look at her early efforts/style, but her more current works are much better.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty decent .......2006-08-26

This 3 in 1 book by Nora Roberts is the 2006 edition. The first and the third stories are the best. The second one is a little slow, but overall, it is worth reading.

    4 out of 5 stars A collection of 3 almost 2 decades old mystery/romances........2006-08-14

I have been reading Nora Roberts and her alter ego J.D. Robb for sometime but never saw these three stories before. I liked the first one okay, felt the second had issues - especially the "hero", and loved the third one.

Each of the stories has the common element of danger thus the collection's title "Dangerous". In "Risky Business" Liz Palmer is a single mom who lives in Cozumel, Mexico and runs a dive shop and dive/fishing/tour boat rental business. She has been there ten years and is an expert at what she does. She has employees - some more transient than others. As she takes some tourists on a glass bottom boat outing, she is upset that one of her employees of only a few weeks, Jerry Sharpe, has not shown up to help her. However, as they tour in the boat gasps and scream suddenly come from the group as Liz sees Jerry's dead body weighed down by an anchor. The police question Liz over and over but she doesn't really know anything and then Joshua Sharpe, attorney from Philadelphia and Jerry's identical twin brother, shows up and also quizzes her. As Joshua and Liz work to find Jerry's killer and what he was up to, an attraction grows. My problem with this story was that Joshua was not as much romantic as many of Ms. Roberts' other heroes. Their romance felt a little forced. But overall a fun read.

My least favorite was "Storm Warning" which is a whodunit like the movie "Clue". While Autumn and her Aunt Tabby were wonderfully fleshed out characters, Lucas seemed way too mean to Autumn and too mysterious and shallow. The mystery was fun though.

Finally my favorite, "The Welcoming" was very sweet and touching for the romance and also exciting for the mystery/suspense so I won't tell anymore here except to say if you haven't read this one, you will enjoy it!

2 out of 5 stars Not for die hard fans!.......2003-11-18

I gave this book two stars - one for Risky Business and one for The Welcoming - they are typical stories written by my favorite author. Predictable, yes, but enjoyable. Storm Warning made me mad. I wish I had not spent the time trying to figure it out, It made no sense! Do not buy this book. Go check it out at the library and read the first and last story, but skip Storm Warning!

    3 out of 5 stars First story great....and that's where it ends........2003-07-19

I can't beleive I actually found something written by Nora that I did not like. The first story in this collection is excellent and is worth purchasing the book for. However, the second story is horrible and the male character is just a major creep. I almost didn't finish it. The third story is OK, and worth your time to read, just not her best. I LOVE Nora, but that second story just didn't cut it. If this is your first Nora book - PLEASE go get something else by her - anything - don't let this one turn you off to her. I feel guilty writing this!!! Sorry Nora!

    3 out of 5 stars very cautious.......2006-08-17

You can't complain about a lawyer making sure you know exactly how bad things can get--it's their job. The one problem I have with "Risky Business..." is that the author goes to extreme great pains (sometimes the reader's) to disclaim any potential harm that might arise from the reading of this material blah-blah-blah... There are several legal agreements presented with descriptions; that's good. There is very little explanation of how the money works (who gets what and where it says so in which agreement); that's not so good. As an overview to how complex this field is, the book is good. The point of all of it is, essentially, if you get this far in movie-making, get an entertainment attorney who knows how to protect you, 'cuz there's no way you'll be able to do it on your own. Glad I read it. Now I can pass it along to someone else.

        Book Description

Every day young people engage in risky behaviors that affect not only their immediate well-being but their long-term health and safety. These well-honed essays apply diverse economic analyses to a wide range of unsafe activities, including teen drinking and driving, smoking, drug use, unprotected sex, and criminal activity. Economic principles are further applied to mental health and performance issues such as teenage depression, suicide, nutritional disorders, and high school dropout rates. Together, the essays yield notable findings: price and regulatory incentives are critical determinants of high-risk behavior, suggesting that youths do apply some sort of cost/benefit calculation when making decisions; the macroeconomic environment in which those decisions are made matters greatly; and youths who pursue high-risk behaviors are significantly more likely to engage in similar behaviors as adults.

This important volume provides both a key data source for public policy makers and a clear affirmation of the usefulness of economic analysis to our understanding of risky behavior.

I have read a good many Black Lace books, and this one was one of the worst. If this is indicative of where the imprint is heading, I'll be sadly disappointed. The story was silly, the heroine unlikable, and to paraphrase Mark Twain, the sex scenes were lousy, and there weren't even that many. There was a particularly obnoxious one where the leading man has sex with a girl to get information out of her, and much is made of how fat she is and how she's just so glad to get a big old stud like him. Personally, I prefer not to read condescending things like that in my erotica, especially when it's written by a woman. I'm all for a little disrespect, but it should be of the bodice-ripping variety! If you want a good Black Lace book, check out Stand And Deliver, or Darker Than Love.

The book is not just filled with "yucks" concerning these odd jobs; it goes further and specifically tells what skills are necessary to do the jobs. I found this aspect fascinating (along with the salaries).

The book is a quick read. We got a kick out of many of the stories.

        Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars well-written, hilarious and extremely informative.......1999-05-18

The book would make a great college graduation gift. It was comprehensive, funny, and offered some wonderful job possibilities. I would love to be on the prize patrol for Publisher's Clearing house. Great job! Rosen and collaborators!
