Book Description
You've probably seen it before: a human brain dramatically lit from the side, the camera circling it like a helicopter shot of Stonehenge, and a modulated baritone voice exalting the brain's elegant design in reverent tones.
To which this book says: Pure nonsense. In a work at once deeply learned and wonderfully accessible, the neuroscientist David Linden counters the widespread assumption that the brain is a paragon of design--and in its place gives us a compelling explanation of how the brain's serendipitous evolution has resulted in nothing short of our humanity. A guide to the strange and often illogical world of neural function, The Accidental Mind shows how the brain is not an optimized, general-purpose problem-solving machine, but rather a weird agglomeration of ad-hoc solutions that have been piled on through millions of years of evolutionary history. Moreover, Linden tells us how the constraints of evolved brain design have ultimately led to almost every transcendent human foible: our long childhoods, our extensive memory capacity, our search for love and long-term relationships, our need to create compelling narrative, and, ultimately, the universal cultural impulse to create both religious and scientific explanations. With forays into evolutionary biology, this analysis of mental function answers some of our most common questions about how we've come to be who we are.

Nicely done, accessible account of the human brain.......2007-08-08
David Linden's "The Accidental Mind" is a neat little book. He has two main purposes: (a) to write a readable introduction on brain science, accessible to nonspecialists; (b) to make the case that (page 6) `. . .the brain is an inelegant and inefficient agglomeration of stuff, which nonetheless works surprisingly well." As to the first point, this volume is a far cry from the magnificent work, Michael Gazzaniga's The Cognitive Neurosciences III: Third Edition. However, if one is not well steeped in knowledge and understanding of the neurosciences, Gazzaniga's edited work is close to impenetrable. This book is well and crisply written, explaining simply how neurons work the structure of the brain, how the brain develops, and so on.
As to the second point? He asserts that, quoting Francois Jacob (Page 6), "'Evolution is a tinkerer, not an engineer." That is, evolution operates on organisms as they are and then the process of change takes advantage of the material already existent to adapt to new conditions and challenges. Thus, the human brain is mounted on older, more primitive structures, in an ill fitting complex. As he says (page 21): "The brain is built like an ice cream cone (and you are the top scoop): Through evolutionary time, as higher functions were added, a new scoop was placed on top, but the lower scoops were left largely unchanged."
Thereafter, he speaks of the structure of the brain, how the fully mature human brain develops (with both nature and nurture having roles to play), how the brain is associated with all manner of emotions, learning, religion, and so on.
The Ninth chapter has a title that speaks directly to Linden's first theme--"The Unintelligent Design of the Brain." Here, he slyly critiques advocates of the "Intelligent Design" perspective by noting that the brain is hardly an exemplar of some great design. As noted already, he sees the brain as inefficient and "jury-rigged."
This is a book that provides plenty of insight into how neuroscientists study the structure and function of the brain--and presents some of the exciting possibilities for future research.
In sum, this is a work that ought to be attended to by those interested in the brain sciences, but who cannot readily read the technical literature.
Entertaining?.......2007-07-30
This is a great book for readers who are interested in an overview of the anatomical and physiological functions of the brain. If you have had any previous A+P, this book may give you flashbacks (and does a good job of explaining how those feelings were "created.") You may even recognise many of the examples and case studies right from classic lectures.
If you are approaching "The Accidental Mind" as pure entertainment, enjoy. If you are looking for juicier or more in depth case studies, keep browsing.
A Very Refreshing Book On Brain Science.......2007-07-18
The addition of this review is to fill in one gap in particular. Dr. Linden is the first scientific author I have read in quite a while that wasn't flip with schools of thought. He has distilled research with varied hypothesis and has enough respect for his field and the reader to frankly state when "We just don't know." My only regret is that Dr. Linden didn't make this book the "larger tomb" he mentions when wrapping up the research that didn't make it into the book. Highly recommended to anyone who is mystified by belief and dreams.
A Perspective-Changing Read about the Brain.......2007-07-04
Why do we sleep? What is love? What is happening when we dream? These questions seem so basic to our human experience, and yet the average person in at a complete loss to explain even the most common of our daily experiences. This is where the Accidental Mind comes in. Linden's book offers a refreshingly different perspective on the brain. After reading this book, you will have a much better understanding of how your brain shapes your experience, it's limitations, and what is going on "behind the curtain." Intelligence, gender identity, sexuality, are all covered with an eye to how these factors play out in the architecture of the brain.
This book also provides a great deal of information on the biological basis for issues that are being debated in our culture, which many people will find enlightening and necessary for making informed comments.
If you are considering picking up this book, read Chapter 7 on sleep, available for free from Linden's website:
[...]
While the book may sometimes goes into great detail on the biology, most readers will find plenty of compelling information in these pages. People who enjoy this book and are interested in some of the practical insights that new research is providing about humans, how we work, and practical advice for improving our lives should check out The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt.
Happy reading!
For your thinking and reading friends...........2007-05-31
I found The Accidental Mind a well written, humorous and thought-provoking introduction to neuroscience and to some profound ideas about evolution and other topics. It's the kind of book that makes you interrupt your partner's reading every five minutes with "Hey, listen to this...." If Dr. Linden lectures as entertainingly and interestingly as he writes, his classes at Johns Hopkins University must be in great demand.

For the diehard romantic, there may be nothing so thrilling as chronicling that one true love. The Book of Us presents 150 topics on the subject--ranging from "Before I met you, my love life was..." to "One of the reasons I think we lasted so long as a couple is that..." Like David Marshall's earlier book, The Book of Myself, which is also a keepsake, this book makes us wish it were prettier. But it is the thought that counts, and a lot of thought will go into turning these empty pages into something a spouse, one's children, and then their children will cherish. And not to fear: While this is a very sweet book, there is also plenty of room here to ruminate on the less saccharine aspects of life partnership: financial crises, humorous escapades, parenting woes, and home-improvement projects. A word to gay readers: One of the book's five sections focuses on "Tying the Knot"; some of the questions specifically address elements such as the bachelor party and the wedding dress, but most of the questions are generic enough to apply to any type of commitment ceremony. --Jane Steinberg

Great gift.......2007-07-30
My husband bought this for me, I just love it. It is broken up by sections, dating, wedding, first year of marriage, middle years, later years. I think its such a neat way to keep track of things that go on in your relationship. We will have it for years to come and our grandkids can read funny stories that we would have otherwise forgotten.
It is a very thoughtful wedding/shower or anniversary gift.
Love it!.......2007-01-11
I wrote in this book for a few months before giving it as a birthday gift to my fiance on his birthday, he loved it and spent the next few nights reading it before bedtime. He was very surprised that I had spend time writing it in all my feeling for him when I first saw him and how I felt, made him feel very special. He still keeps in on his night stand even 2 yrs later. Love the book, helps to tell someone how you feel. Great questions and lots of room to write, really helps your feeling come out.
Indefinitely Sweet.......2007-01-09
It's not exactly what I was expecting, but it definitely was a sweet surprise. I really liked it. One of the things that probably made it difficult to fill out is that the questions were asking for details and there wasn't enough room to write. Some of the questions were worded a bit odd as well. Overall, I liked the book.
Great Gift Idea!.......2007-01-05
I bought this book for my husband for our first married Christmas together. As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, it's only interesting if you fill it out for the person you're giving it to...they get the joy of reading your interpretation of various situations and moments of your life together. I think it's a great guide to recording your history as a couple and fully intend to keep filling it out as we progress!
Book Of Us Review.......2006-11-10
I bought this for my husband for our 10th anniversary and he loved it! I had completed the entire book before I gave it to him and it is a great thing to pass on to your kids.
I also bought one for my parents to fill out. They have been married for 42 years and are having a BLAST filling it out together!

Book Description
Oh, Brother!
I'm watching my brother swagger through our New York City apartment...smiling. Rhys, the detached, surly man who turned brooding into an art form. But he's not brooding now. No, he's practically threatening to pistol whip me for shaking hands with the beautiful, half-dressed creature named Jane who just tried to sneak out of his bedroom. Weird. Brother Grim has a sex drive?
That's not all that has me freaked out. Something terrible happened last night, something that made Rhys break his own rule and save the life of a mortal. Trouble is he doesn't remember anything from the past two hundred years. Like that he's a vampire, not a Regency viscount with an English accent.
All I know is this mortal woman has managed to touch my brother's frozen heart, and I, Sebastian Young, will do whatever it takes to help him keep her...
Customer Reviews:
Dark & Dirty.......2007-08-07
This is truly a supernatural romance novel. Sometimes the romance is greater than the supernatural or visa-versa. This book is a lovely blend of both. Our story revolves around a new New Yorker, Jane, who meets a vampire, Rhy, while being assaulted by some jerk outside a bar. Rhy has two brothers who are both vampires as well. The story revolves around Rhy's love for Jane and his deep seeded issues with being a vampire. I found this story gripping and heart wrenching at times. You will want to know what happens with Jane and Rhy as soon as you pick up this book.
Not that great.......2007-04-21
I read Christian's story first, really liked it, and was looking forward to the other books in the series. I'm in the middle of this one, and honestly, I'm not sure I can finish it. The heroine is so insipid--yes, she wants sex; no, she doesn't want sex. She melts at his kiss, repeatedly jumps into his bed, "does the nasty," but then claims they shouldn't do it again. Ugh. I want to shake her, "Make up your mind!" If I were Rhys, I'd dump her. And the amnesia thing is getting old real fast. I'd like to read Sebastian's story, but after this, I'm not so sure. From the reviews, it sounds like it may be another schizo, wimpy heroine.
Excellent! Excellent!.......2006-12-20
Kathy Love immediately drew me in with the intriguing characters of Rhys and Jane (what brought them to the bar in the first place). Then, why was Rhys' brother, Christian, so miffed with him that he wanted to kill him? Nothing gets told right away (exactly what happened with Rhys and the woman Christian thought he loved?), but just enough to keep me interested. The characters had depth and were actually believable (vampires, believable?) -- and likable. Rhys' other brother, Sebastian, was hilarious with all the stunts he pulled on the amnesiac Rhys (a vampire with amnesia who forgets he's a vampire?).
The love scenes were mesmerizing. I've read several romances and the love scenes got to the point where they were tedious; I thought I'd become jaded. Kathy Love's love scenes were highly original and I read with bated breath. When I thought she couldn't possibly throw in another love scenario, she did. Personally, I like the bathtub scene the best.
A great book to read when you have enough time set aside. Don't expect to be able to easily set it aside and get back to it. I made the mistake of starting to read this book at night. I had a hard time putting it down as it's such a page-turner. Needless to say, I lost a lot of sleep.
This was the best vampire romance book I've read so far as it had wonderful characters, plot and suspense. I will definitely be purchasing more of Kathy Love's books.
All right....but less fangy then I hoped.......2006-08-08
Maybe its just because I've been spoiled reading Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, and MJD but I found this book a little lacking in the suspense, action, and angst. The relationship development between Jane and Rhys left me satisfied and the love scenes were brilliant but it didn't FEEL surprising to me. I thought about purchasing the next in the series, especially because its about Christian who ends up being the semi-bad guy in this book but after a few minutes worth of deliberation I realized I need less NORMAL in my PARANORMAL romances.
Brothers are a favorite of mine........2006-08-07
Fun read Kathy. I can identify with Rhys, but I love Sebastian. You had me laughing at inapproriate times in the middle of the night! Learned a thing or two about the undead (I'm new to vamp books) - and lost my heart to true love!
Can't wait to read the rest of the brothers' stories.

Book Description
Ten years after the publication of his highly acclaimed book Soul Murder, Dr. Leonard Shengold reflects anew on the circumstances and the consequences of willful abuse and neglect of children. With compelling examples from literature and from clinical cases, Dr. Shengold describes techniques of adaptation and denial by victims, the psychopathology of soul murder, and therapy techniques for restoring the capacity to love.
Customer Reviews:
Compassionate yet unsentimental.......2003-04-07
Shengold's book is really important -- he explores the inner lives of child abuse victims without sentimentalizing them, proscribing their recovery from trauma, or denying their complex aggressive responses to the abuse.
This serves to make the victim of abuse feel like a real human being, whose less adaptive and even bizarre sides are included rather than avoided or explained away by simple theory. Shengold's writing, while at times needing elaboration and more specific case histories, is beautiful, clear, complex, at times dazzling. The final chapter is a masterpiece of healing and hope. An important work.
Excellent information on a very important topic.......2002-09-21
I found this book well-written and extremely useful, but it is not a very easy book to understand if you have not studied psychology.
Some of the terminology and concepts are quite sophisticated and it is a pity that Shengold was not able to express his brilliance in a more user-friendly manner.
I think is book is excellent for the serious student of psycholoy, abuse and psychotherapy. I fear that for those who are not familiar with terms and concepts, this book could be a difficult read.

Customer Reviews:
Get Real.......2005-11-03
This book is unbelievably presumptuous. The author seems more intent in giving you her own perspective and history rather than allowing a reader to fill in theirs. This book provides an idealized relationship with one's mother and doesn't allow for anything outside the storybook fantasy. There are plenty of other books of this nature that allow you to record and pass on all the life details to your daughter in a much more personalized way.
However, if you come from a white family that spent many a day wearing lace and attending tea parties, then this book is for you.
Beautiful Keepsake.......2005-01-21
This is a beautifully illustrated and beautifully written keepsake book from mother to daughter. My only complaint is that I wish I could find something similar for my adopted daughters.
Worth more than all the gold & treasures in the world!.......2004-10-13
This is a wonderful book for you to record memories of for your daughter when she was young all the way up to her wedding. But the book doesn't stop there, there is a section for information on your Mother and also about you. It's wonderful to find out information & memories of when you where a child as well as your mother! With just little bit every now and then as your child is growing up and you will have something your daughter will treasure forever!
Donna Green is also a wonderful artist! The drawings in this book are so beautiful and live like, such awesome talent!!!!
Fun To Write and Read.......2001-12-07
I genuinely loved doing this book for my daughter. My interview with my mother was enlightening and I know my daughter is going to love reading it. I only wish there was one for sons as my 21-year-old son wants one like this.
To My Daughter, With Love.......2001-03-23
This book is a must for mothers who want to pass on an intimate, candid and historical record of their memories of their mothers, asking what your earliest memory was of her, what she smelled like or what she wore, what she loved, her shortcomings. It moves through our own childhood (our best friend, our best/worst memories, advice given but not taken, favorite recipe. There are a few spots for favorite pics of your mom, you and your daughter. Lastly, you write about your legacy & dreams for her. It is a carefully laid out format, simple w/stunning paintings of daughters/mothers Victorian style with a contemporary accent. A great wedding or 21st birthday gift!

Great book.......2007-01-09
This is a great book for Grandmothers. I gave it as a gift and the lady just adored it. I have one, too. I will always cherish my book.
Amazing!!!.......2006-07-18
I had purchased this book a couple of years ago for my grandmothers. I was so eager to learn about our family history. I am now 28 and one of my grandmothers health is fading fast. I just went to visit her over the weekend and she gave it back to me completed. I have never read a book that meant so much to me. It has stories of her growing up and my great grandparents, which I never knew. Stories of how she and my grandfather met to stories about my mother and myself as a child. She obviously took the time (2 years) to put her thought into this book. It is something that I will cherish for years. I recommend this to anyone that is a grandparent or even makes a great gift from a grandchild.
Grandmother's Memories: To Her Grandchild(A Journal of Faith and Love).......2006-07-09
I bought this book for my first grandchild and when I received it I knew that I needed more for future grandchildren so I ordered 8 more. It is a beautiful book and since I have lost both my parents this will be a great way for me to tell my grandchildren about their great grandparents. I recommended this book to a friend who also is going to be a new grandmother and she bought one for her new grandchild. You have made it affordable to buy and it is a wonderful gift for a new grandparent.
GREAT SERIES - A living history.......2006-06-02
This is a great series. My wife and I have completed the Mother and Father books and we have provided the grandparent books to each respectively. Each book in the series provides you with a number of topic headings covering all facets of your life. You fill out your history in your own words. What a great thing to give your child/grandchild. I don't typically take the time to review books. However, this series was worth the time. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Great gift for Mother's day!.......2006-02-25
Great book, but be prepared for a lot of religious themes! I purchased two for both sets of Grandmas. They LOVED it! I can't wait to get them back to give to my daughter when she's older.

Love it!.......2007-09-08
I have been searching for months for the right baby book and my mother and I found this one. It has everything that you could dream of from all of the firsts to the little things that we sumtimes forget. It has a great binding and is great for a boy or girl. My cusion is getting ready to have her first child also and I plan on this being the book I get for her. The only draw back is that it doesn't have a lot of room to write about the 2nd- 5th birthday but I plan on creating a scrap book to go with it so if you want to be able to add more about those birthdays try to be creative.
THE baby book of all baby recording books!.......2007-04-26
I had this book for my son and bought one for my second son this year. It's such a perfect size and contains the right amount of recording pages from year one through school grades. You can't go wrong with Susan Branch ~ her artwork is so charming.
An amazing keepsake.......2006-07-05
This is an amazing keepsake book. When I first read through this book I was so moved and touched by the kind, gentle words and poems. This book is so warming and beautiful I recommend it to everyone who's looking for an amazing memory album. It's just wonderful. The words and illustrations are light in color but meaningful and to the point. I am sorry I couldn't get one for my other two children.
I Have One For Each Of My Six Kids.......2006-06-27
My mother gave me a copy of this book for my first child born in 1994. I am a little picky about things such as baby books and I loved this one. The illustrations are darling. The pages have little quotes and drawings in the corners. The author gives some pages with specific things to write about and many empty pages for whatever you want. I have just received my sixth copy for my last child. I love this book. I still pull out my now twelve year old's book and read it. It has congratulation cards, birthday cards, his first teeth, locks of hair, his birth announcement, and those of his siblings stuck into it,- yet there is still a little space to write a little something more.
You will enjoy filling this wonderful book for your bundle of joy!.......2005-11-08

I love this book.......2005-10-24
This is one of my favorite books. It is really a sweet story with a wonderful ending.
Good, but dull........2003-01-18
This series seems to get less exciting the more books you read. I am not sure what it is about it. This book was extremely dull in the middle, but the beginning is suspenseful and the ending you just have to stick around for!
New, but great.......2002-06-13
This was new for Lori Wick. I had already read quite a few books by Lori Wick, but this book suprised me. Not that it was a bad book, it was a great book. It was just that Lori Wick, as I had thought, was a pretty easy-going writer. Nothing extreme. Her books didn't have much action. Not that, that is a bad thing, but this was the first book that actully had a villian. Well, a mean villian. I thought it was cool that Pup was a spy. And it pretty much had everything I wanted in a book. I thought it was so interesting and fascinating I read it in abou 6 hours.(:
This is a great book!.......2001-06-15
I really like "To Know Her By Name". McKay is a handsome, daring man who was wounded in a fight. A country, reclusive woman finds the hurt man and takes him in. As he heals he finds out more and more about this woman. It turns out Callie is not as clueless and country girl as he thinks. It turns out she's working for the government as an undercover agent and is working on the same case he is. (He works for the treasury department.) Travel with McKay and Callie as they work to catch a criminal and slowly fall in love with each other.

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable
ASIN: 0595423434 |
Book Description
Memories of Drop City follows a group of people and their radical movement, in the Southwest and on both coasts, in a decade that shaped the rest of the century.
"John Curl's characters in Memories of Drop City aspire to be '100 years' ahead of the rest of us, but Curl shows, through his highly crafted and brilliant novelistic memoir, that they often succumb to the same social flaws as the rest of us. This might be the most balanced memoir or novel yet published about the Sixties."
Ishmael Reed, National Book Award nominee
"With this compelling evocation and portrayal of breathing people, John Curl unpacks the boxed lunch myth of America's alternative lifestyle Sixties, and restores the day to day flavor of a deeply fabled era still key to understanding the way we live (and don't live) now."
Al Young, poet laureate of California
"Memories of Drop City is an extraordinary book which brings the Sixties back to life in vivid detail and conveys the spirit of the Sixties better than almost anything else I've read."
Gerald Nicosia, author of Memory Babe
"Memories of Drop City brings vibrantly to light the flower children who returned to the land seeking peace and by that act were committing revolution. John Curl captures the idealism of a generation and their demonstrations against war in a revolution with a smile.."
Floyd Salas, author of Tattoo the Wicked Cross

A tale of stunning passion, reckless danger, and the fierce will of a remarkable woman who can wield a sword as powerfully as any man–and who dares to fight for her most uninhibited desires. . . .
Spirited, iron-willed Rhonwyn is the bastard child of the Prince of Wales, raised more boy than girl, able to ride and fight with the best. Against her wishes, she is married off to an English lord, Edward de Beaumont, who is stunned to discover that his lovely gilt-haired bride is a fiery wildcat with a mind of her own. Slowly, he wins her trust and her heart, and she accompanies him on the Crusades to North Africa. But when Edward falls ill, Rhonwyn boldly leads his troops, only to become a captive of the sensual Emir of Cinnebar, a man who will teach her the ways of erotic love–passions that will be put to the test when she returns to England to battle once more . . . this time for the man who rules her heart.

A waste of words.......2005-09-26
Small really blew it this time...she began with an interesting story and an intriguing heroine, but then sends the girl from man to man and bed to bed. I endured chapter after chapter of totally un-titillating sex in the harem, wondering all the while where the hero was and when the REAL couple would finally get together. This reader likes to see new twists on run-of-the-mill traditional romance, but this was neither interesting nor erotic, just a complete bore. A big disappointment from a big gun writer.
Bertrice Small at her classic best.......2005-08-31
Set in a turbulent era in Wales and England's history, A MEMORY OF LOVE is the story of Rhonwyn uerch Llywelyn, the illegitimate daughter of the prince of the Welsh. When their mother dies giving birth to their younger sister, five year old Rhonwyn and her baby brother Glynn are taken by their father from the isolated cottage where they lived and placed for safekeeping in a fortress guarded by men loyal to the prince. For the next ten years, Rhonwyn is raised more like a warrior than a princess.
When Rhonwyn's father allies himself with the new English king, he cements the treaty by offering his long hidden daughter as a bride for an English lord. Ten years of living with soldiers has not exactly prepared Rhonwyn for marriage -- she doesn't even know what the word means! She does, however, know the meaning of duty and she proceeds to fulfill her father's bidding. A short stay with her father's sister, the Abbess of Mercy Abbey, introduces her to another world and she does her best to learn the gentler arts. The result of this unique upbringing and education is a beautiful woman more hellion than gentle damsel. Edward de Beaulieu is taken aback by his new bride's spirit but intrigued all the same. They slowly learn to love each other. Edward is soon called upon to join the Crusades and Rhonwyn accompanies her husband.
When sickness invades the camps and Edward falls ill, Rhonwyn leads his troops to fight the infidels. She is captured and taken to Rashid al Ahmet, the caliph of Cinnebar, who is enthralled by her beauty and warrior skills and promptly puts her into his harem and bed. Even as she learns to care for Rashid, Rhonwyn still dreams of being reunited with Edward. She gets her chance at escape and sails back to England only to find out that Edward believed her dead and has turned to another.
A MEMORY OF LOVE is Bertrice Small at her classic best. She weaves a tale of a woman who -- subject to the whims of the men in her life -- manages to create an identity and a life uniquely her own. Yes, there is the prerequisite harem episode but you know what? It actually does play a pivotal role in this story! Readers will find this story an exotic treat.

Not The Greatest!!.......2003-04-12
I just recently started to read Bertrice Small because I heard she was a great romance writer. The truth is that this is the 3rd book that I am reading by her and the only one that i have finished. I didn't find this one that great of a read either. The only exciting part of this book was the harem thing. Other than that I found it utterly boring. I don't know if I will continue reading her though.
Strong and Sassy Heroine.......2003-03-19
Rhonwyn, bastard daughter of the Prince of Wales opens this story as a five year old sheltering and caring for her three-year-old brother. Her mother lay dead from a miscarriage when the children's father shows up and Rhonwyn's indifference to her sire demonstrates her independence and strength of character. Not knowing what else to do with his children and not wanting to be inconvenienced, he brings them to the closet place, a border fortress manned entirely by men and leaves them. Rhonwyn grows up more of a lad than a lassie, the darling of the fort, excelling in swordplay and hunting. By the time her father returns, 10 years later, and politically motivated, he has betrothed his daughter to one of the king's men. To his horror, Rhonwyn is unrecognizable as a lady and he brings her to his sister, the lady abbess, to mold into some semblance of womanhood before bringing her to her new husband.
Rhonwyn's early upbringing without another female to guide her in any womanly pursuits or knowledge of marriage, romance etc. made this quite a different read. Her only guide to behavior was to do her duty with honor and loyalty. It was accompanying her husband on the crusades that she would began to fall in love with him. Then she was captured and thrust into the harem of a caliph who would be her guide in releasing the demons that had, up until then, blocked her passionate nature and she would be schooled in erotic love. Rescued, escaping and finding her way back to Great Britain, she would find that she had been declared dead, replaced by another, and entering a new battle to repair her heart.
I loved this fascinating and compelling story! From the very beginning, this book was very exciting with an interesting story and an absolutely fabulous heroine. The historical details were plentiful, the dialog fresh and sassy, the heroine gorgeous, secondary characters fascinating, and the sensuality sizzling - all in all a most perfect read!
Not one of Small's better books........2002-12-13
As a Bertrice Small fan, I enjoy everything she writes. But this one was depressing and disappointing. Even so, I liked the Rhonwyn character -- full of life and energy! And I appreciated the fact that she was an excellent warrior and very athletic!
I never warmed to her boorish husband, Edward, and the way he summarily married his milksop cousin after Rhonwyn's abduction really bugged me out. Insult to the injury was added when Edward's brat kid was rubbed into Rhonwyn's face.
I thought Rhonwyn's exit from the harem was a little too convenient; never have I read of a head eunuch aiding and abetting the escape of the premier harem favorite. I didn't understand why the formula was changed in this book.
I gave it two stars because I'm a sucker for the harem thing.
