Donald Trump doesn't pull any punches when he surveys the American political scene: Pat Buchanan's "totally lost it," Al Gore is "an able, underrated man who seems confused," and Bill Bradley is simply a "disaster." But the real estate tycoon has some ideas of his own about how the United States should be run, and he shares them with the potential electorate for the 2000 presidential race in The America We Deserve. There aren't too many surprises here: Trump lambastes the government bureaucracy that's made a mess of the civic infrastructure, particularly the public school systems; he supports creating opportunities for business developers (both large and small); and he's tougher than tough on crime. He's also prepared to come down hard on America's enemies abroad, such as China, North Korea, and Cuba. Among the more interesting aspects of his platform is his desire to do away completely with soft money in campaign financing and allow unlimited personal contributions--along with full disclosure of political contributions, updated daily on the Internet.
The America We Deserve is an effective combination of Trump's straight-shooting personality and policy-wonk data points. As another American presidential campaign heats up, Trump raises issues that will force voters to give serious consideration to what they want in a candidate. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
In his most recent book, The America We Deserve Donald Trump shares his vision of the future. Donald Trump can afford to be more plainspoken than most politicians. He is not compromised by alliances and not connected to special-interest groups. In the political game, the politicians, the lobbyists, even the media get their marching orders from their financial backers. Trump has one financial backer: Trump. Throughout The America We Deserve, Trump points out problems and offers sensible, practical solutions. To help him formulate his ideas into well-researched and workable policies, Trump has secured the support and counsel of a group of domestic and foreign policy advisers, all with White House or senior policy experience. In his book, Trump lays out his concerns and solutions, virtually a platform on the major political issues facing our country. But this is not a dry, public-policy book. This is Donald Trump taking on the issues in his no-nonsense, unvarnished manner, offering populists, provocative, and sometimes dramatic solutions that no other politician would dare put foward. In three best-selling books, Donald Trump used stories of his deal-making and his dazzling life to captivate readers with his vision of just how far you can go if you dream the American Dream. In the America We Deserve, Trump takes all that he has learned from his successes, his failures, and his extraordinary comeback and uses those lessons to build a vision of what needs to be done to ensure that the American Dream he dreamed continues to be a possibility for everyone.

One of Donalds best books ever! A must read, no matter what you think of the guy........2007-10-10
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I can say I was very surprised, captivated and motivated into action after reading this book. With the many different sides of Donald Trump in the public eye, this side may be one you have never seen nor heard completely. This isn't a book about The Donald, this is a book about The America We Deserve and should be living in today. A must read for everyone who believes that things aren't going the way they should be and looking for something actionable to do about it.
Truly the America We Deserve.......2007-09-18
I had heard such great things about this book that I had to read it. I was about 7 years too late, but I still think the book is good and worth reading. My only debate was Trump's weak argument to correct the school system. He really didn't have a plan to correct it other than stop feeding more money into the system. Other than that one area, the book was very appealing. I think his idea of having our country run the way a successful business CEO operates is worth a shot.
The best idea in the book is Trump's plan to impose a one time 14.25% tax on individuals whose net worth exceeds $10 million, which is a mere 1% of our population. This tax money would be used to pay off our national debt and restore the social security program. I know this tax would probably not be able to pay off our national debt today, but this is the kind of idea that would only evolve from the CEO of a company that has goals to meet in terms of the overall bottom line of their company's annual performance. Ideas of taxation on the richest individuals in America are far better than creating additional debt for our country, so that's why I agree with Trump that someone with a great business mind should run for President.
Another interesting chapter in the book was his prediction of another terrorist attack that would make a previous one in New York look feeble. A lot of the chapter mentioned the bioterrorism that we would encounter (i.e. anthrax), and I actually had to check the copyright on this book when I read this chapter.
I do recommend reading this book, but be aware that it's a bit outdated. The plans for national debt, social security, freedom from terrorists are outstanding. It makes you wonder how things might have turned out different for America had Trump run for President.
Who Can Disagree With The Title?.......2005-09-09
I think most anyone would agree with Mr. Trump that the America he describes within this book would be an ideal nation. The problem is, Donald Trump does not know anymore than anyone else about how to achieve the problems he very practically identifies. The math of what's lacking in this book could be described with an equation like this: A+X=C. A is where we are today in the America we have, C is the "America we deserve" now what is X that would get us to C? I have no idea. I wish someone knew.
But as far as Trump's observations go, he is frequently correct and in his "idealistic pragmatism" he has an observant eye when it comes to citing certain less than ideal, even intolerable, situations.
I liked Trump's comment that money is not the key to fixing America's education system. He demonstrated how in real dollars we spend more on education these days than in the recent past and yet see less achievement in return. His biting, dead-on observation that the teachers' union's position that salary increases for classroom instructors would elevate teachers' performances is akin to them saying, "Bribe us more and we'll agree to put more effort into the job we're already taking money to try our hardest at now."
VERY good point!
Trump was also correct in this 1999 book in foreseeing another terrorist attack on New York City that would make the 1993 World Trade Center attack seem minor. That predicition came tragically true on September 11, 2001. His warnings to prepare for further attacks are more true in 2005 than they were in the Clinton Years. As I'm writing this, Hurricane Katrina is in the headlines and the lack of coordinated management in helping its victims shows how unprepared this mighty nation truly is for disasters of a monumental scale. I'm sure our ever-patient foes are learning from this and I hope we Americans are as well.
But lest I come across as doling out more praise to Donald Trump than his book, sound though it is, merits, I have to come around to the fact that Trump's critial troubleshooting does not contain enough suggestions of how to improve the things he says are wrong. He's a smart man, not without faults, but he understands how business operates and I wish he had provided more insights in this book into how we can reach the hypothetical point C that would be the United States he takes delight in describing in his writings.
Classic Trump prose mixed with logic and wit.......2003-11-16
It's about time a guy like Donald Trump published this book. Whether you love him, hate him, or want him to fix his hair, The Donald presents fresh takes on age-old arguments and explains why he has what it takes.
While every other candidate in 2000 was writing books about their youths, military service, or whatever else, Trump uses his get-down-to-business style to attack issues (and people) and offer quick-witted solutions. The fact that I disagree on a few points does not take away from the quality of the book. If you want a straight-shooting tome from a guy who takes care of things himself, The America We Deserve is a must-read.
Trump beat Gore and he didn't even run!.......2003-11-10
According to surveys taken at that time, Trump was ahead of Gore and just behind G.W.Bush. No doubt if Trump would have run, Gore would have blamed him too!
After reading this book (actually re-reading) I really wish Trump would have run for President. He has some very good views on how to make this country stronger and certaintly would b e a better choice than the comedy team (RE: Democrats) that are running.
I particularly like Mr. Trumps ideas on how to save social security.
Mr. Trump, if you are reading this, you should consider running in 2004. Mr. Bush could use some real competition. Obviously right now, he doesn't have any. Your views could make for a stronger America.

Customer Reviews:
revealing and decent.......2006-08-16
Author Gu is a brave fellow. He offers straightfoward info and analysis on what is really inside Chinese business and political world. He is highly critical of the Communist ills that continue to cause hellish problems for China and foreign operations inside. Other than this abusive bureaucratic power, Chinese people are very diligent and creative. But the key is to get rid of the overextended bureaucratic power, as so claims by Gu.
This book is a must read -- it is a rare book that reveals the inner workings of the Chinese bureaucratic system. This new edition is very nice, which is sharply revised and expanded. (Five stars for his new edition)
powerful development lessons .......2006-08-03
Author George Zhibin Gu is a high-profile Chinese journalist whose powerful newspaper pieces are widely read. This book is a must read. The reason for my recommendation is simple: This book summarises the key lessons from a fast-changing China under globalization and capitalism.
These lessons are powerful. First, an open society is a must in order to gain true development. Second, having foreign involvement is a key driving force for China's quick development in this era. Third, a truly meaningful development must depend on individual private initiatives other than government bureaucracy.
This book gives rather straightforward analysis on what is behind China's new development. It gives tremendous information on foreign multinationals and investors doing biz inside. Furthermore, it gives huge info on how this foreign involvement affects China's society, government and economy. In particular, it is extremely open about the ills of the Chinese bureaucracy. To overcome bureaucratic barriers, it emphasizes the need for greater private initiative as well as openness, among other things.
Also, the book talks about the ever-increasing influences of China's surge on global development. It gives very insightful analysis on a changing global production, investment, and trade map, as well as manufacturing and job transfers, among other issues.
The book also offers much practical advice on doing biz in China. Numerous case studies are presented, including both successes and failures.
must read.......2006-07-29
This book is for all readers. Not to mention other things, it contains several dozen case studies on global multinationals doing business in China, like Wal-Mart, P&G, Intel, HSBC, Bank of America, Ford, Siemens, BP, Unilever, Sony, GE, GM, Morgan Stanley, and Microsoft. (Amazingly, this revised and updated volume gives most current info on China -- even events happened in May 2006 are contained here.)
It also gives huge info on emerging Chinese multinationals. All the leading Chinese companies such as Haier, Huawei, TCL, Lenovo, China Telecom, Baosteel, China Oil, Sinopec, CNOOC, and Ping An are studied here. Furthermore, comparisons are made between the Chinese companies and their international counterparts. These discussions are straightforward, covering both strengths and weaknesses.
Its scope is rather wide: the author aims to identify key factors behind global development: causes, effects, and consequences. He offers vast info and analysis on a changing global production, investment and trade map, which involves all nations, rich or poor. Interesting comparative studies involve US, Canada, Europe, India, Japan and China. Above all, he pinpoints opportunities and challenges under globalization.
Also it is highly critical of the abusive Chinese bureaucratic power. Gu claims that China's fundamental weakness is with this overextended, self-appointed bureaucratic power. Vast info and facts are presented to support his statement.
He is a high-profile newspaper commentator/consultant that adds much color to his discussions. The book's key strengths come from the fact that the author has vast first-hand experiences, so that he gives countless insider's stories. Its style and presentation is very reader friendly and straightforward, but its analysis is overpowering.

Praise for The NEPA Planning Process
"The most comprehensive and detailed guide to the effective, as well as efficient, administration of NEPA to date."—Lynton K. Caldwell Consultant to the Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs 91st Congress, 1968-70.
"Eccleston . . . has provided a commonsense guide for managers that illuminates the NEPA process with lucid discussions and commonsense guidance on how to navigate some of the most difficult challenges in NEPA practice."—Frederic March Environmental Scientist Sandia National Laboratories.
"Here is the essential book for every NEPA practitioner. The NEPA Planning Process explains the process for preparing adequate and effective impact statements, and for complying with NEPA's statutory requirements. . . . Especially recommended."—Daniel R. Mandelker Stamper Professor of Law Washington University.
As the first modern federal environmental statute, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was passed by Congress in 1969. All federal agencies must comply with NEPA's sweeping mandate. Yet, amazingly, until now, there has been no authoritative, single-source guide for navigating the complexities of the NEPA process. Authored by the leading national expert on the subject, this book fills that gap in the literature.
The first comprehensive guide of its kind, The NEPA Planning Process offers clear, detailed explanations of all relevant requirements, with emphasis on managing and enhancing the effectiveness of federal planning. Designed to save hours of painstaking research while minimizing costs and risk of litigation, it integrates critical information from hundreds of sources—including the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ)'s NEPA regulations and guidance, presidential and EPA directives, case law, recent research from nationally recognized experts, and the professional experiences of NEPA practitioners.
The NEPA Planning Process is an indispensable professional resource for environmental scientists and engineers engaged in NEPA practice. It is also a valuable working resource for project planners, regulators, citizens groups, and attorneys.

Until I read Maggie Watson's guide for getting our affairs
in order, I thought I had covered everything in my Trust.
Now I find there are important items that should be in
the list for our Revocable Living Trust trustees. The CD
is a great idea for typing in information. Also, a good
page to read is "Some Tips" near the beginning of the book.
It's a useful, user-friendly book, and I commend Ms. Watson
for being so thorough in putting all this information together.

It's not human to be altruistic.......2000-02-13
This collection of essays explores how individuals view commonly-owned resources. The clear conclusion is that people are biologically selfish: each person sees his/her own interests as more important than the group's interests. Altruism doesn't work as a policy. This flies in the face of common wisdom. I wish this book could be made standard reading for all high-school students. It explains the population's apparently self-defeating habit of destroying their own habitat.

Book Description
"This book will be invaluable to everyone concerned about the future of civil rights and the fundamental principles of justice and opportunity for all in our modern society."--Edward M. Kennedy, U.S. Senate
"This book is an extraordinary mix of academia--Haar's intellectual credentials are outstanding--and the real world."--Paul G. Garrity, Former Chief Judge of the Housing Court of the City of Boston and Retired Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court
"Charles Haar examines one of the greatest social issues of our day--the conflict between suburb and city.... A very important, wonderfully readable piece of work."--John Kenneth Galbraith, Harvard University
In Suburbs under Siege Charles Haar argues passionately that all people--rich or poor, black or white--have a constitutional right to live in the suburbs and that a socially responsible judiciary should vigorously uphold that right. For various reasons, American courts have generally failed to question local zoning regulations that trap the urban poor in the squalor of inner cities, away from decent housing and jobs in the suburbs. No U.S. Supreme Court case, for instance, has confronted exclusionary zoning rules, as Brown v. Board of Education once attacked school segregation. Instead, judges at all levels have most often reinforced the residential segregation that may well destroy American society. In this provocative book on the landmark Mount Laurel cases, Haar shows how the N.J. state judiciary broke out of this pattern of judicial behavior. These courageous, innovative judges attracted nationwide attention by challenging the forces of affluence that ruled the suburbs (and the legislature) of their state. Furthermore, they based their reasoning on the N.J. state constitution in order to protect their rulings from invalidation by the U.S. Supreme Court.
In the early 1970s, when the cases began, the plaintiffs, Ethel Lawrence and her daughter Thomasene, were barely making ends meet in the Philadelphia suburb of Mount Laurel, a town where their African-American ancestors had lived for seven generations. The Lawrences' dream was to live in a Mount Laurel garden apartment planned by a grassroots reform group as affordable housing: in their way stood a typical minimum acreage zoning ordinance. The eventual court victory of the Lawrences and their young public interest attorneys inspired other N.J. suits and a process of remediation that continues to this day, as judges, experts (special masters), the state legislature, and other citizens work to carry out the Mount Laurel principles. Haar's book is a bold attack on conventional doctrines of the separation of powers limitations on the judicial branch and a plea that judges across the country assume their proper responsibilities for fair housing before it is too late.

****Cinderella and Prince Charming or Romeo and Juliet***.......2005-08-19
Great Read!
Front back cover:
Maid Lara Hunter knew a one-night stand with a stranger was uncharacteristic of her. Her mysterious lover seemed like an ancient prince, sensual and primitive, come to take her away from her humdrum life. Away from the memories of her employer's humiliation and toward the kind of desire she'd only read about....
But Eli Ashton was no prince - he was her hated employer's estranged son! Lara had had enough of the Ashtons and their arrogant ways. But when Eli claimed her, her body obeyed his command. Yet her independent streak forbade her to give him her heart: she would come to Eli Ashton on her own terms - or not at all!
I feel like the story in some ways is related to the Romeo and Juliet story. Eli ashton is not welcome in the ashton estate where Lara works.
The story is full of passion. I highly recomended it.
