5 out of 5 stars My New Favorite!.......2007-08-17

I've read many christian books about relationships, purity, ect...and this one BY FAR is my favorite, the best. Whether it's by yourself or with your significant other--Read it!

5 out of 5 stars Must have for ALL single Christians.......2007-06-06

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Jason has a way of writing that is very conversational. It feels like talking to a friend. With a witty sense of humor and a strong knowlege of the Bible, this book is very entertaining but doesn't sugarcoat anything. He tells you what God's word says about sex before marriage, while also telling you why sex outside of marriage is a relationship killer. This book is one of the best purchases I have ever made, and one I am sure I will read again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2007-05-07

This is an easy weekend read. I recommend it to anyone serious about dating in God's will. Illian has done his research. If you like Jason's book I would recommend John Eldridge, Wild at Heart and Captivating.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!!.......2007-03-28

I've never been one to read a "self-help" book. They are just not my thing but after seeing Jason on the Joni show on the Daystar network I thought I would give this book a shot. I'm so glad that I did! I found myself laughing, crying, and changing my perspective on dating. This is a great read for Christians who want to find a balance when it comes to dating. Jason does an excellent job stating that it's NOT about turning your back on dating nor about having sex with each person you date but instead waiting on that man (or woman) who you are meant to share the rest of your life with. It's okay to date and meet new people, otherwise how else are you going to get to know your significant other? Like he said, "God has His part and we have our part." Our partner isn't just going to fall out of the sky one day but we also don't have to go out and make ourselves look desperate by looking for him or her. I personally am content with waiting on the Lord but this book definitely gave me insight on what "waiting" really looks like. Clearly it's not about checking out the ring finger of every gentleman that I meet. Who knew? LOL

This is a GREAT read!! I highly recommend it to anyone who is single and looking to start dating.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome READING!!! Everyone should read this book.......2007-03-13

This book is excellent in the helpfulness of Dating and Sex. I laughed, cried and learned there's more to a dating relationship then just sex. I couldn't put the book down. There are alot of truths and hard facts in this book. It would be beneficial for everyone to read this, in case you run into someone dealing with this very issue. It's not just teens, or college kids, but those who are divorced, widowed, etc. that need to know the issues surrounding sex and dating and waiting. What is acceptable and what is not. I had now idea what is acceptable and what wasn't, this book helps put things into perspective, and gives you things to think about.

Book Description

From Rudolph Valentino to Leonardo di Caprio and from Veronica Lake to Kim Basinger, Hollywood movies and their legendary stars have influenced popular fashion since the earliest days of silent film.

Hollywood Dressed & Undressed pairs classic and current film photographs with costume expert Sandy Schreier's lively anecdotes and facts about favorite Hollywood movies stars, their unforgettable costumes, and the designers behind them. Schreier transports the reader through seven decades of Hollywood film in chapters exploring such themes as "working women" good and bad, the influence of French couture on Hollywood costume design, and star-power accessories like cigarettes and furs.

Schreier shares true stories gleaned from research and rare personal interviews with such movie industry insiders as costume designer Edith Head, screenwriter Elmore Leonard, and Madonna, among others.

A highly entertaining raid on Hollywood's closets, Hollywood Dressed and Undressed is a must for film buffs, fashion cognoscenti, and devotees of American pop culture.

5 out of 5 stars Fine pictorial overview of Hollywood fashion.......2000-06-09

As someone who's interested in fashion history (and who runs awebsite dedicated to the role of opera gloves in the history offashion and the movies, I found this book an excellent visual introduction to the importance of fashion in Hollywood. The writing is snappy and breezy, and the pictures (which, after all, *is* why you're buying this book - isn't it?) are gorgeous. Truth in packaging compels me to reveal that I read this book at my local library, but it's definitely on my wish list! END

5 out of 5 stars GREAT STORIES AND PHOTOS.......1999-09-13

I AM A HOLLYWOOD NUT. . .I love everything about the movies. At last, here is a new twist, by an author who seems to love the movies as much as I do. Thanks, Sandy.

5 out of 5 stars Great photos with informative and entertaining stories.......1999-08-13

I purchased a copy of this book because so many of my favorite actors were shown in great photos. I started reading the captions and chuckled at the quick quips and short anecdotes. I ended up buying more copies as gifts. This book has turned out to be one of the best books I have ever given. I hope others will get it for their library. It's not only for movie buffs, but the great photos and stories make a fun afternoon read.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Hollywood -- you'll love this book!.......1999-08-12

I have seen Ms. Schreier on the A&E Channel on several occasions over the last few months discussing hollywood fashion in the movies -- she always provides so many great inside tidbits that I had to go and buy this book. The book did not disappoint! As a 40 year lover of the movies -- I found her stories enlightening as well as very entertaining. I can't wait for the sequel!

1 out of 5 stars The Enquirer seems reputable compared to this drivel........1999-01-18

Again, someone who is relying on old outdated myths and legend has written a book for sensationalism. Shreier's treatment of Clara Bow and Marion Davies is shameful to say the least considering all the facts that have been unearthed in recent years regarding both ladies. Bow triumphed at Fox with her two final films, and it was HER OWN idea to retire to Nevada with her rancher husband Rex Bell; Fox begged Clara to stay. Davies was one of the most gifted and well loved clowns of her era. She is accumulating a wealth of latter day fans who are discovering this fact. While stifled under some of the more lofty productions hoisted on her by Hearst, Marion was brilliantly funny in many films and also retired (as many of the leading ladies did at the time) when she hit 40. If you pick up this book, please read Shreier like Mother Goose, either way it's all fantasy. Let's try to find the real facts when proposing to talk about other peoples lives.

    Book Description

To draw is to understand what we see. In The Undressed Art, writer-naturalist Peter Steinhart investigates the rituals, struggles, and joys of drawing. Reflecting on what is known about the brain’s role in the drawing process, Steinhart explores the visual learning curve: how children begin to draw, how most of them stop, and what brings adults back to this deeply human art form later in life.  He considers why the face and figure are such commanding subjects and describes the delicate collaboration of the artist and model. Here is a powerful reminder that no revolution in art or technology can undermine our vital need to draw.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Inspiring.......2007-05-28

I bought this book at first glance as I do many books on art I find on my too-frequent trips to the bookstore. I'll read nearly anything that seems interesting, and I am particularly interested in both the act of art and drawing, and why we (as humans) cannot seem to stop ourselves from making art of all kinds.
That said, this book is really a tale of why and how artists draw the human form. Its challenges, its intrigues, and its joy. It is a historical description of drawing as an art form, and also an inspiration to grab pencils and paper and sketch everything! I would recommend this book to artists, art lovers and readers alike!

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2007-03-31

This book was recommended to me by an art professor at the university. As an artist's model I found it interesting. I mainly enjoyed the stories about artists and models and drawing groups and the historical aspects as well. I found the other parts less interesting but still worth reading.

    5 out of 5 stars Very insightful.......2006-09-27

A very good read. Light enough to not overwhelm, but deep enough to stir some introspection. I'm just starting figure drawing, so it gave me some idea of what to expect. Enjoyed the view from the models side of the canvas.
I also enjoyed Mr. Steinhart's views on "why" we feel compelled to draw and paint.

5 out of 5 stars The Undressed Art addresses a lot about why we draw.......2006-02-25

This book brings together a lot of ideas from many different sources, both past and contemporary, into a wonderfully crafted text. It is informative and a great read at the same time. I don't agree with everything that Steinhart postulates, but he's not strident in his opinions which leaves one with the feeling that there's still plenty of room for discussion. Anyone who loves to draw the human figure should read this book several times.

    5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Surprise.......2006-02-24

Out the outset of this book I was unsure of its purpose. Initially filled with too many references to others' writings, theories, and pontifications, I struggled with wanting to continue. But while sitting on a plane and having moved through the opening chapters, I reached a point of no return and unable to put it down. Upon completion and further reflection, I came to reallize that the book is not unlike a drawing - initially the artist (author) is finding his way, refining his line and contour, and in the end providing the form to give it shape, tone, appeal and emotion. One clearly gets the sense that regardless of the creative outlet, the mind processes in the same way - it is who one is more than about what they do or rather, what they do is who they are.

This book validates why some of us love to draw - simply for ourselves and hopefully the results may be enjoyed by others. Filled with a lots of anecdotal information on a variety of subjects that relate to the desire to create, I made the mistake of not underlining and making notes in the margins - so I get to read it again.

    Book Description

As a deputy in Majestic, Colorado, Lanie Prescott doesn't see enough action issuing parking tickets, so she decides to accept a law-enforcement job elsewhere. On the night of her going-away party, the job offer is postponed, and Lanie is stuck in her hometown -- unemployed.

Maintaining a brave face is hard -- especially when she meets her replacement. He's tall, he's gorgeous and he heart beats so fast she should be arrested for imagining all the ways she could use her handcuffs. Paul Cabrera left the Miami P.D. to distance himself from an old case that haunts him to this day. But his pursuit of a quiet life is hardly that with the sexy Lanie living next door.

When an unthinkable crime occurs in the small town, Lanie is back on the force, and what began and an arresting attraction between Paul and Lanie turns into an internal affair of the heart. Suddenly, life in Majestic isn't so bad after all.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-10-08

When I read the summary on the back of the book I thought it was about a woman who was supposed to leave her local law enforcement agency, her hunky replacement, and the summer crime that has her back on the force. There is no big summer crime, but rather a jewel theif hitting small jewelry stores, and Lanie is only back on the force for a total of 48 hours (first for crowd control when Paul heads back to Miami for a couple of weeks and then after she almost catches the jewel thief.) She was mainly working as the police receptionist while the person who usually held that job was out on maternaty leave.
While I liked Lanie and Paul's romance, I was pulling for Lucille and Dutch more than I did for Lanie and Paul. Despite this and the misleading back summary, Undressed is still a good book, and a nice foil for all of the action packed thrillers that I normally read.

    3 out of 5 stars Good romance/character study.......2007-01-18

Lanie Prescott is ecstatic that she's leaving the misogynistic Majestic, Colorado police department when she accepts a position for a neighboring police force, as she's tired of being coddled by all the male officers. When her new position is put on hold, she finds herself in limbo, as she's already been replaced by hotshot Miami detective Paul Cabrera. He's even sublet her duplex.

When she breaks her leg giving chase to apprehend a suspect who stole her stereo, she finds herself attracted to the mysterious Paul. Being neighbors and her job as a glorified file clerk for the Majestic PD gives them an opportunity to get to know each other better, though Paul is reluctant to set down any roots ans has a few ghosts in his past. But soon they fall under each other's spell. Will the romance squash her plans to break out and prove herself.

With her quirky small town characters and unrushed romance between protagonists, Stef Ann Holm has quickly become a must-read author. She does a great job of taking two strong and independent characters and providing a relationship of equals using good plotting, realistic dialogue, and an entire novel to develop the relationship. Other Holm standouts include "Leaving Normal" and "Lucy Gets Her Life Back."

4 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and satisfying!.......2006-03-19

I was expecting a book entitled "Undressed", with a such a suggestive cover photo, to be a trashy romance novel with lots of sex and not much substance. Not so at all! This was a well-developed story about two police officers making changes in their lifestyles and career paths. Paul was trying to simplify his life and Lanie wanted more action and excitement in hers, and when they gradually fall in love, they must find the right balance to make their relationship work while still satisfying their respective career goals. Secondary characters round out the story well, and solving the crime adds adventure and depth to their plight. This story is romantic and sensual rather than overtly sexual. It is refreshing that the characters treated each other kindly and dialogue was very respectful, instead of the usual bickering and hostility found in other romances.

4 out of 5 stars Will leave a smile on your face !.......2006-01-17

I found this treasure while at my local library. This is a fun love story of two police officers who find love in a small Colorado town. Lanie is leaving the Magestic police force and meets Paul her replacement from Miami. Lanie breaks her leg the night of her going away party chasing a suspect and Paul finds her and takes her the ER. The story of Lucille (Lanie mother) and Chief of Police Deutsch is sweet secondary romance. I plan to search out more of Stef Ann Holm novels.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet yet satisfing..........2004-09-13

In the first couple of chapters I feared a boring read, or at least not my type. I continued on and by mid-book I found I did not want to put the book down until I was finished. It is a sweet story, a strong female character who finds she may not be so strong, has emotions, and conflicts with what she thinks she wants and what she really wants. Nice HOT male character who is kind, giving, and morale. Will support 'his woman' not matter what. The build up was nice and slow, yet entrancing and a nice surpirse ending. Not the typical begging, crying, I hate you, I love you kind. Both knew what they wanted, what the other needed and were willing to try to find both.

        Book Description

A fascinating read of personal experiences from the famed fashion designer that showcases the lives and contributions of iconic women -- from Jackie Kennedy to Elizabeth Taylor to Laura Bush to Princess Diana

Arnold Scaasi has been dressing legends for almost five decades. His enduring tenure as one of the world's premier fashion designers and tastemakers has afforded him vast stores of insider knowledge and firsthand perspectives on an array of illustrious personalities who -- in their disparate arenas of high-wattage celebrity and influence -- have defined our contemporary notions of female power and glamour. Here, for the first time, Scaasi invites readers into his glittering A-list realm as he recounts his intimate experiences and interactions with larger-than-life female icons who made their mark in spheres as varied as politics, Hollywood, the music industry, and high society.

Scaasi devotes each chapter to a specific woman or to a group of women, including "Broadway Girls," "New York Girls," and "Hollywood Girls." He shares dozens of behind-closed-doors anecdotes exploring what makes these women tick. In candid prose, he recalls what they said and how they acted, and most important, offers keen observations of who they really are underneath his creations. Using a privileged entrée into their private and public lives, Scaasi takes the measure of their impact on the world at large.

Here, readers will discover: Joan Crawford's fetish for cleanliness; the dazzling Barbra Streisand's famous Oscar night outfit and her obsession with perfection; Mamie Eisenhower's staunch refusal to wear a bra; the bountiful charms of Joan Sutherland, the opera legend; Mary Tyler Moore's and Sophia Loren's unique glamour; Rose Kennedy's prediction of a future woman president; Aretha Franklin's fear of flying; Scaasi's visits to the White House to his good friend and client Barbara Bush; his confrontations with Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe; and much more!

Scaasi dresses only women he genuinely likes, so his tales are never mean-spirited. Instead they spotlight the designer's surprising interactions and often poignant perceptions of Eleanor Roosevelt, Joan Rivers, Louise Nevelson, Natalie Wood, Hillary Clinton, and many others. The book is filled with photographs from the author's personal scrapbooks and fond recollections of some of the world's most beautiful, accomplished, and powerful women.

Women I Have Dressed (and Undressed!) is a trove of irresistible insider dish and a tender, humorous memoir of the most influential women of our time.

Fashion designer Arnold Scaasi has seen many of the most important American women of the 20th Century in their underwear. In consequence, he knows their secrets, which he shares in his memoir, WOMEN I HAVE DRESSED.

This book just is plain old fun. Scaasi drops lots of names, and he tells lots of tales. Whether it's sleeping in the Lincoln bedroom or dining with Diana, Princess of Wales, this boy from Montreal has done it all.

In the process of designing his gorgeous couture garments, he has learned intimate details about some of the most beautiful women in modern history, such as Elizabeth Taylor, and some of the most famous, such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

WOMEN I HAVE DRESSED is Scaasi's own story. It makes for a wonderful read.

4 out of 5 stars A very good book of its kind.......2005-01-01

This is the kind of book I have a fatal weakness for. You get little points of information you never knew about both stars and first ladies. I read it in one sitting!
If you like glamour, if you like celeberties, if you like living life with style, get this book! Mr. Scaasi not only knows clothes, he knows how to maintain friendships and move in the highest circles. A fascinating read.

          Book Description

In the later Middle Ages clothing was used to mark religious, military, and chivalric orders; in the courtly milieu, more specifically, the ostentatious display of luxury dress was used as a means of self-definition for the ruling elite. In Courtly Love Undressed, E. Jane Burns explores the representation of this material culture in the literary texts and other documents that imagine various functions for elite clothing in twelfth- and thirteenth-century France. "Burns argues persuasively that fabric and clothing can create representations of both gender and status in selected French courtly texts. . . . While grounded in solid readings of medieval texts, Burns's book also reflects and adds to recent feminist rethinking of clothing's capacity to empower women."--Speculum
