If you are seeking a book like this, I am so sorry............2007-08-10
We lost our son in June (2007) to suicide. He was 16. This is the #1 resource we have used so far to help us make it through these dark days. Grief is not something you "go through" or "heal" from..... it is something that becomes a permanent part of your being. It is like growing a new and unfamiliar body part. You must let it become part of you and rely on God to learn how to accept it.
Thank you SO much to the authors for knowing how important this was to write. IDEA: I read this book 3 times before fully digesting it. The third time, I highlighted certain parts that I felt were pertinent to my son. I also wrote notes in the margins. Next, my mother read it (in one night, cover to cover).... and used a different colored highlighter and also wrote notes in the margins. We have now passed it onto his best friend who is doing the same.... with a different colored highlighter. It is our way of sorting through my son's very complicated brain and trying to make sense of his death. It is a structured method of sharing our knowledge of him, and why on Earth he chose death over life. It has truly helped all of us. My husband will read it at some point, and someday our younger children will read it.... with the wisdom and knowledge from those of us who knew and understood their brother the best.
I highly HIGHLY recommend this book. I don't think I would be doing this well (not that I am doing great!) at this point without it. God's truth and wisdom in my darkest days.

If you are alone -- HE IS THERE.......2005-12-02
I love this book. I've never wanted to go to a Christian counselor but God blessed me with Dr. David Cox ( www.drdavidcox.com). This book is not only good for the survivor but also for those who want to survive. I read the book out of curiosity more than anything and discovered the love and pain that people left from suicide go through. It has shown me father god's love with such a passion (http://www.shilohplace.org and http://www.fathersloveletter.com). In his recommendations he also has provided me with a book called Father Hunger (http://www.mcgeepublishing.com) for those who yearn to know who the Father is that really cares. The one who won't leave you alone, the One who has always been there and watched over you and has never let you go. Wait until you discover that God is the one who never leaves you, who is always with you and who gives you the hope -- especially when you feel there is none. Don't be alone - because you're not. Your eyes will open when you see that you are not alone -- God is always there - always has been and always will be.
Aftershock: Help, Hope and Healing in the Wake of Suicide.......2005-03-04
This is an incredibly helpful book for which, sadly, there long has been a tremendous need. How I wish it had been available thirty or forty years ago. Silence too often follows suicide, which only delays and compounds the challenges of grieving such a loss. The authors rightly stress how vital it is that survivors talk about what has happened. This book is a powerful aid and encouragement in doing so. The earthquake metaphor works beautifully throughout; surely one's landscape is forever changed after a suicide, and in its aftermath it takes a long time for survivors to feel safe. Of the myriad after effects of suicide - including survivor guilt, fear and societal suspicion - all are eloquently articulated. The book's contents are broken up into manageable bites for readers who may be able to focus for short periods. The section on how to talk to children about suicide (and the importance of honesty) was particularly moving and very clear and helpful. Several personal stories are interspersed throughout the text and the variety of voices and perspectives enriches what is already an invaluable book. This is the book I will put into the hands of both survivors and those who want to offer the sort of help that is most needed.
Much needed book for anyone who counsels others!.......2004-04-28
Anyone who counsels others should have this book in their library before it's needed. Dr. Cox knows first hand what it's like to be left behind after a family member completes suicide. When he was only nine-years-old, his father killed himself, leaving a confused, angry little boy. Other stories illustrate the book as he and Ms. Arrington help readers learn the signs that a loved one may be contemplating suicide, with a chapter dedicated to exploring teen depression and suicide. They compassionately guide readers and give them hope for rebuilding their lives when a loved one does indeed commit suicide.
An excellent--and long-needed--book.......2004-01-05
David Cox and Candy Arrington have written a long-needed book. For decades, suicide has been the death no one talks about. AFTERSHOCK dispels the many misconceptions about suicide, including the belief that people who talk about suicide usually don't follow through. Or that when depression lifts, suicide is no longer a concern.
The earthquake analogy used thoughout the book is fitting. Like an earthquake, suicide leaves immediate devastation; its damaging effects are strongest at the "epicenter," the family; and aftershocks continue to be felt. The aftershocks of suicide, the authors say, are isolation, anger, guilt, rejection, betrayal, grief, and loss. AFTERSHOCK explains how to deal with each of these emotions.
Especially important is the section on explaining a death by suicide to children. Suggestions for suicide intervention and for starting a support group of survivors of suicide are also included. Chapter 3 contains excellent advice for recognizing the symptoms of suicidal behavior in teens and responding effectively.
The authors use the term survivor as a person who has lost a friend or loved one to suicide and also as someone who has attempted suicide and failed. Both will find practical help and Biblically-based encouragement in AFTERSHOCK. Pastors and counselors will also benefit from reading this exceptional book.

Book Description
Every year millions of Americans are diagnosed with cancer, stroke, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, ALS, and other life-threatening or life-altering diseases. When faced with a devastating diagnosis people must quickly understand the diagnosis, prognosis, and choose from several treatment options—while still in shock. AfterShock identifies the processes required to respond to a serious diagnosis, regardless of the specific disease.
Social psychologist Gruman offers practical advice in a 10-stage approach to making clear-headed, informed decisions about who to tell and when; how to get a second opinion or find the right doctor and hospital; where to find reliable online information and telephone help-lines about a particular diagnosis and treatment; how to navigate the health care maze; where to turn for support and comfort.
Dr. Gruman not only draws on her expertise in consumer health information and the advice of doctors and nurses, she shares the personal stories of people who have dealt with traumatic diagnoses, including her own experience of having had three different kinds of cancer and a dangerous heart condition. AfterShock is inspiring and empowering, and is an essential companion book to the disease-specific titles that most people with a devastating diagnosis purchase.

Watch the Charlie Rose interview & then buy this book.......2007-07-13
Jessie Gruman, Ph.D., has written an essential reference for just about everyone. She offers a well-informed cushion and roadmap to support what most of us will face quite unprepared--the shock of learning that you or someone you love has a bad diagnosis. Gruman has been there--she's had 4 serious illnesses, including 3 different cancers. She has brought together her own personal experience and her extensive behavioral science and health policy professional knowledge in a very accessible reference. She was interviewed on the Charlie Rose Show on 7/11/07. (You can get the DVD through Amazon) Notice how engaged Charlie Rose becomes from the get-go in his interview with her, due to his own health issues and what she has to say. Don't wait until you get the bad news, and you are in shock. Watch this interview and then buy this book now.
An essential book.......2007-02-17
This fabulous book should be in everyone's medicine chest because like bandages and aspirin, sooner or later, you're going to need it. Gruman skillfully and sensitively guides the reader through the full spectrum of concerns and activities that characterize the first several weeks after receiving a devastating medical diagnosis. Some of the chapters are devoted to topics you would expect in such a book: how to get a second opinion, how to manage the flood of emotions that spill over you. But others are entirely unexpected and therefore, especially welcome: how to deal with your insurance company, how to inform family members and co-workers, how to negotiate benefit managers, etc.
And just in case the above suggests that this is a dry and technical book, it's absolutely not. The great strength of AfterShock is that compelling and often heart-rending anecdotes from real patients, doctors, human resources specialists, and family members provide an emotional grounding for every bit of advice the book contains. This book is essential reading. Like it or not, we're all going to need it sooner or later.

World War II. The great powers were at one another's throats. Armiesclashed across rolling countryside. Air forces sowed death from above. Then, in 1942, everything changed. A new front opened in World WarII—when an alien race attacked the Earth...
In his extraordinary alternate-history epic, Harry Turtledove createdthe acclaimed Worldwar saga. Now, in the Colonization series, what began as war has evolved into decades of epic struggles andrebellions erupting against the invaders known as the Race.
As the 1960s begins, one of the great powers explodes a nuclear strikeagainst the Race's colonization fleet. As she did a generation before,Germany goes to war over Poland, this time against the Race.Retaliation is swift and deadly, leaving much of the Third Reich in ruins. TheUnited States has used its fast-developing military technology to lockthe invaders into a standoff. And in China, the ragtag revolutionaryarmy of Mao Tse-tung—armed with Russian-supplied, German-madeweapons—may prove the Race's most intractable enemy of all.
On Earth, the alien invaders find themselves confronting a far morecomplex and difficult species than any they have encountered before. From the hatred between the Jews and the Deutsche to the irrepressibleinventiveness of human technology, the reptilian invaders realize theyhave met creatures that cannot be tamed. Ultimately, only superiorfirepower may keep Earth under the Empire's control-or may destroy theworld.
Despite its military superiority, the Race still fears itunderestimates its foes. While uprisings and aftershocks of war shake the planet, while the Race's troops are undermined by ginger addiction, one nation plotsa stunning counterattack.
With its sprawling cast of characters, startling plot twists, anduncanny sense of history, Colonization: Aftershocks is anothermarvelous achievement from Harry Turtledove—the author USA Todaycalls "the leading author of alternate history."

oh but this is not the end........2005-09-14
Just when you hoped for some closure, the book is left with an ending that clearly leaves open an new series. The new series will revolve around the attack on the lizards home planet. So if you pick up this book thinking it will come to an end, good luck. Absolutely no resolution to be had. sorry.
Marathon series begins to stumble........2005-08-14
The quality of this SEVENTH book of the series is definately below that of the first six books - mainly due to the author apparently running out of believable material and unique situations for his characters, and having to use too many gimmicks in order to fill up the 600+ paperback pages. For example, how do so many of the characters end up at some point in Edmonton, Canada? And how many times can Sam Yeager foil assasination attempts by trained killers?
Another problem is the lack of attention "The Race" (and humans for that matter) pay to the radialogical after-effects of the nuclear war that ensued in book six... after all, it was the fear of "nuclear contamination" that had supposedely kept the lizards from using their nuclear advantage in the first place. When so little side-effects of contamination occur, it makes the whole series seem less believable. Yes, this contamination is sometimes mentioned - but it is severly downplayed... I can remember what a stir the Chernobyl disaster caused in real life, and I see probably less attention given to the problem of the exchange of 100's of nukes (fission or fusion - it never is really explained).
Furthermore, the book includes even more than the normal amount of "review" material, with character's situations being long-windedly over-explained.
At this point, I want to give the author some credit for fixing some mistakes he made in previous books. For example, a number of times in previous books, he referred to the "sandstone" architecture of Jerusalem; and in this book he correctly refers to the "limestone" architecture.
Also, I credit the author with being able to do as well as he did over the course of seven books - it is no wonder he begins to run out of gas here.
I give this book 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3.
I'd previously obtained a copy of the last book in the series (Homeward Bound); otherwise I'd probably have taken a break from the series at this point (never to return?). However, I'm going to make a mad dash thru that book, in an attempt to cross the finish line in this marathon series. And, I'm hoping that enough time elapses in the storyline, so that there are a lot of new characters and situations in the eighth book.
Believable.......2004-11-18
Which is about the highest praise alternative history can get, I believe. Turtledove creates an alternate universe that seems completely real. If aliens had invaded in WWII, this is what we would be presented with, in the 40s and the 60s. By using very personal characters, with famous, infamous, and unknown historical personages. Turtledove makes excellent use of his strong background in history. He has a creative writing style that pulls the reader in, with many unexpected results, and few flat characters. Those that are, are flat for a reason- lizards culturally evolve slowly.
There are some weaknesses in Turtledove's writing style as well. He has the same flaw as Tolkein- weak female characters. Perhaps it is a result of his gender, but I began to realize that the only involved females he imagined were those of an alien race, or those who were raised by an alien race- thus not truly human females. He seems to skip over getting in the minds of women, as he does so well with men, which results in somewhat half of the story being told.
The other major flaw is Turtledove's treatment of Christianity. It is sad that he merely apes this inaccuracy which is so typical of the science fiction genre. In the future, if religion exists at all, it is certainly not the Christian religion- or if so, a pale imitation of it. This flaw is most prevalent in this latest work of the series, where Turtledove speaks of the Muslims and Jews to a great extent, and how they follow what the believe, but the Christians are not willing to die for their beliefs, nor commit to worshipping one God. This is a grave departure from historical (or present) reality, where over half of the Christians in the world live in the 2/3rds world, the largest religion in the world is Christianity, and more have died for their Christian faith in the 20th century than the previous 19 combined.
Despite these two blemishes, it is a very enjoyable work. If one has read through the entire series till now, you definitely want to complete it. If not, you want to read the other books before coming to this one. Though the book is understandable on it's own, it doesn't make as much sense by itself. It is a fitting near-ending (2nd to the last), where most storylines are resolved, but the biggest and largest only hinted at till the end of the book, to be finally resolved later in the 21st century.
Ugh, finally it's over.......2004-09-04
When it started, this was a pretty good series. But every book has gone downhill, and this one is no exception. Aside from the stale characters, the repetitive situations, and the ENDLESS blabbering about minor plot points, my biggest problem has always been the central character: Sam Yeager. He is not supposed to be an anti-hero or a farcical character, yet he is the most loathsome central hero I've ever seen. Stupid, vain, dishonest, treasonous...and every third thought has to do with baseball. Enough! After 5,387 references to minor league baseball, I never want to watch the game again. If his wife-stealing and betrayals are the mark of a true hero, I wonder about Harry Turtledove.
Anyway, this book is dull, dull, dull. At least in the fifth one, there were 5 pages of war after 450 pages of talking. This one doesn't even give you a pay-off. Turtledove is a fading star; judging by the huge quantity and low quality of his works past the mid-90s, I'm not even sure he is writing his own stuff anymore.
My suggestion: Don't bother. Read something exciting and somewhat plausible, like "Cryptonomicon".
Good enough, but becoming old.......2004-06-11
If you have made it all the way to this seventh book you are probably aware of Turtledove's writing style. It can become tedious with constant and useless repetitions about the Earth being too cold for the Lizards, ginger being a drug the lizards like, and Jews being mad at the Nazis. After the first couple of chapters you will become sick of it...but it has been like that since the first book.
Luckily this redundance is overshadowed by an intersting plot that develops the changing human (and Lizard) societies. Thus ginger smuggling becomes an important part of the book, but it becomes rather tedious toward the end.
Since the book is very redundant, lots of lines can be skipped, making the reading faster and enjoying the actual plot and not just fluffing. It is pleasant enough and has enough intrigue to keep one reading and if you have read all the other books of the series, you should definetly give Aftershocks a try. Bewarned though that Turtledove's writing has not changed and the story is starting to become old even if it remains intersting.

Timing is everything. . .
Model Georgina Hathaway is more than just a beautiful face in a magazine. The twenty-three-year-old's career has brought her independence and a maturity that belies her youth. She can afford the finer things in life, but there's something else she wants: Dr. Elliot Mallory.
Dr. Elliot Mallory is older, more experienced and sophisticated than Georgina. Although he doesn't want to have feelings for her, he's endlessly intrigued by her bright mind, humor and charm. Sill, with maturity comes wisdom--or so Elliot believes--and a long-term relationship with Georgina would be anything but wise. After all, she is young and just beginning her career, and if she ties herself to him now, she'll be cheated out of all that the future can hold. How can he deny Georgina that? But by letting her go, will he lose the best thing that has ever happened to him?

Right Place, Wrong Time.......2005-09-01
When Dr. Elliot Mallory met Georgine "George" Hathaway, almost everything seemed to be right. They liked the same jokes, shared a love of sports, and the chemistry that drew them together was the most powerful he'd ever known.
But the one thing that was wrong was very wrong, at least in Elliot's mind: she was young and just beginning her career. If she tied herself to him now, she'd be cheated out of all that the future could hold.
But if he let her go, what would the future hold for him?

I'm looking to buy one of these books afterglow or aftershocks but the reviews are messed up. Is this book about David and Chelsea or George and Elliot? Some of you need to check the title of your book before you review it.I gave it 5 stars because I like C.C.
A really fun & exciting read.......1999-08-12
I think Catherine Coulter's Aftershocks is a good read. I read the whole thing in a matter of hours and I have read it through 2 more times since then! I think George and Elliot were great characters and I laughed with them got annoyed with them and felt like I knew them really well at the end. I would really recommend this book, although I didn't think much of Afterglow!! The follow on book. Although it was interesting to see how Elliot & George were getting on!!
catherine could have done better.......1999-08-02
i don't hate this book... it's a book i would call in between.. itz just that itz not one of catherine's best.. the age between the two lovers was so huge, i was shocked.. the guy was like 16 when that girl was born... seriously.. wowee.. one advice to catherine in romance stories: never let the women be older than the men... and if the man is going to be older than the girl.. then please make not such a long period... thanks~!! i take much pleasure from reading your books~!!

Disappointing.......2004-05-03
There are many good books on Enron, but this isn't one of them. This book is a major disappointment. The authors cobbled together this book by reading articles about the Enron situation with no first hand research.
Balanced review.......2004-04-23
This books brings together the fundamental issues of Enron in a balanced educated way. Each author brings important experience and insight to the table about this amazing disater with more insight that those in Washington who attempt to regulate its aftermath. It is a true service to its readers.
Dull as Dirt.......2004-04-03
What should have been an interesting topic is given very dull treatment. You've read everything presented here on public policy before.

Book Description
Lee Ezell always considered herself a lighthearted person. Yet when two back-to-back tragedies crashed upon her-the death of her husband to cancer and, ten weeks later, her own diagnosis of breast cancer-Lee was shaken to the core. Like the author, readers all face times of pain and loss. Whether the source is debilitating illness, divorce, financial hardship, emotional upheaval, or a loved one's death, life's injustice impacts everyone. When it does, questions arise: How can God allow such suffering? Why is he so silent? Can he be trusted? Finding God When Life's Not Fair chronicles Lee's journey of hope and courage as she struggled with her faith during her darkest days. Offering no easy answers but plenty of hard-won wisdom, she writes honestly about how deep pain can run-and offers a compelling argument that God's love runs deeper still. Whatever their circumstances, readers will find their faith buoyed as this book affirms the reality of the Lord's grace awaiting them in their toughest times.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing woman - awesome book.......2007-09-08
I thoroughly agree with the previous reviewer's comments. I've been grappling with why I have been faced with inflammatory breast cancer, a rare and advanced form of breast cancer with a poor prognosis, and Lee's book helped me immensely. Whatever you are facing in your life that has turned your world upside down, I think you will find strength in reading this book, along with reading God's Word.
Hope and Help.......2001-08-09
Lee Ezell brings practical help for those who are facing or have faced life shattering circumstances. She does not skirt the tough questions but faces them squarely, sharing the insights and lessons she learned while struggling through her husband's cancer and death and subsequently her own diagnoses of breast cancer. Her comfortable and intimate manner of sharing is like sitting down with a best friend who is willing to be honest about all their hopes and fears. She has done the research to help you find the answers to your questions.......particularly that old nemisis "why?" Each chapter ends with practical steps you can take to help you navigate the road ahead. I heartily endorse this book as an easy to read, but very thorough covering of the problems of suffering. You will laugh and cry, but come away with new insights and a knowledge that God is right there with you in the midst of whatever life throws your way.

McCoy fans start here!.......2006-11-29
Great book -- not just for young readers. Finally someone captured the personality in process of Leonard McCoy. With a terrific plot and the chance to see McCoy hook up with Spock and Kirk for the first time, I would rate this as one of the best Star Trek books written.
McCoy to a tee!.......1997-03-14
This was an excellent piece of penmenship. It fit the charcters Spock and McCoy really well. The appearence by Kirk was a great idea. The part with McCoy's father at the end was a pleasant surprise. I also liked the part about how the girl McCoy liked was already taken by the troublemaker Jim Kirk. Keep up the good writing Jon Vornholt! Also another excellent job by Todd Cameron Hamilton. he captures the charcters very well.
