FROM THE DESK OF JULIET BLANCHARD

I thought working in our family if rm would if nally make my father show some interest in me. he's always been distant toward me—possibly because I might not be his child? (I found an incriminating photo of my long-presumed-dead mother with a man I resemble.) Then I found he gave Brandon De Witte my job! I know this handsome newcomer is keeping secrets—hopefully not dangerous ones. Because not only is my faith shaken right now, but someone seems to want me out of the picture, permanently.

Beloved Enemy by Terri Reed is what I was expecting from successive books in The Secrets of Stoneley series. After being disappointed in the second book in the series, The Secrets of Stoneley bounces back with Beloved Enemy. And yes those Shakespearean references are quite in abundance here as with the entire series, an additional touch I look forward to very much.

Juliet Blanchard wants to badly to please her father and make him proud of her, especially since she has always felt like an outsider in her own family. This was magnified by the fact she happened across an old photo that makes her question who her father really is. So when her father promises her a position of authority at Blanchard Fabrics, she is stunned to find out she's not getting what she wanted.

Brandon De Witte's entire life revolves around revenge. After his family was destroyed by the Blanchards, he swore to one day get back at them. What better way than to infiltrate the enemy camp so to speak, and take a job at Blanchard Fabrics? Never mind the fact that the job he takes, the daughter of his enemy thought was hers.

The attraction between Brandon and Juliet is undeniable though both are resistant to a relationship for different reasons. But when it becomes apparent some is out to get Juliet, Brandon may be her only hope of safety. Can Juliet's faith in God and her reluctant trust in Brandon see her through these dangerous times?

Beloved Enemy was full of mystery and suspense, tempered with the calming force of the strong faith in God that Juliet has. While Juliet's story was first and foremost, the mystery of Trudy's disappearance played a strong role in the story as well. Trying to find more answers about Trudy is a strong driving force behind everything Juliet does, especially when she discovers possible outside connections as a result of the photograph she found. The mystery is well done also as to who it is that's after Juliet and Terri Reed manages to throw a few wrenches into the works that surprised me and even left me hanging a little at the end of the book, waiting to see what would happen in the next book in the series.

Brandon and Juliet want to dislike each other but they can't deny the attraction simmering between them, underneath the animosity over their jobs. Juliet knows Brandon is keeping secrets but she can't help but be drawn to him. Brandon's sole purpose is revenge, but he can't resist the allure of the sweet and religious Juliet. Their blossoming romance is very sweet and has a rocky road to follow but readers will rejoice in the happy ever after these two souls deserve.

Secondary characters are always key to The Secrets of Stoneley and Beloved Enemy is no exception. How could there not be a several additional characters with the size of the Blanchard family? I especially enjoyed the surprise secondary romance that develops in the story. I was so happy to see this one come about as I'm sure most, if not all, other readers of the series will be as well.

5 out of 5 stars A crash landing leads to true love with the enemy.......2006-04-21

Mea is a pilot for Earthforce, fighting the Gaians in a war her heart doesn't believe in. She had been impressed into serving in the military after the destruction of her way of life and family. Because she was allowed to fly, her life wasn't horrible. However the ability to out fly and out maneuver the enemy doesn't save her when the Gaians win the battle with Earthforce and capture her starship. Unwilling to be taken captive she flys into deep space planning on finding a deserted planet to live on until she can get rescued.

Having a Gaian pilot follow her might change things a little but when she can't take the shot to kill the enemy, she strands him with her...

I was very impressed with BELOVED ENEMY. Janet Miller had the hard task of writing almost the whole story around only two characters and I really enjoyed the book. Not only did she create a world on which our couple could survive, she created a story where they came together out of necessity to survive and loneliness rather than because there were vicious animals that would kill them. So the story was fast-paced, interesting and very enjoyable without being suspenseful.

The Gaians, to me seem like an almost idealistic society. Even in battle they don't try to shoot to kill but to paralyze all the Earthforce ships. Then they transplant all the prisoners to unknown relocation planets. The men are only attracted to women they can "attach" too, and the women, while able to be with any male, if they "attach" to a man it will be for life. Because of this, their ways are considered strange and they must be absorbed into the conglomerate of Earthforce. Actually, Earthforce really reminds me of the evil empire from "Star Wars."

Mea loves to fly and the idea of being permanently grounded had her fly into space rather than get captured with her shipmates. She was raised as a Traveler (a futuristic gypsy) and is also very creative with her hands even though she is not very domestic.

Kavath, the Gaian shot down by Mea joined the military because he was unattached. To prevent attaching, men generally wear a mask so they don't smell the pheromones given off by women. So he was really surprised to find out that the enemy pilot was a woman and one he could attach to. As a hero, I liked him, he is resourceful and considerate and yet knows what he wants and is willing to out wait Mea to get it.

Kavath won't settle for anything less than marriage before he "bunks" with Mea so they actually get to know each other first through a tentative truce then as friends. The sexual attraction is there because Kavath inadvertently attaches to Mea (he is able to unattach through her rejection). Because of her own history with Earthforce, I was actually ready to smack her because she had such a hard time believing his own story about what Earthforce had done to his people. Thankfully that really didn't last to long.

BELOVED ENEMY is a great story that I think anyone who loves futuristic tales will enjoy!

    Story Behind the Book

“While studying American history in high school, I was struck with a strange fascination for the Civil War. That fascination grew stronger when I studied it again in college, and I’ve visited many of the sites where the battles took place. When I visited the Appomattox Court House in Virginia , where General Robert E. Lee signed the documents of surrender before General Ulysses S. Grant, I was struck with the thought of creating a series of novels based upon specific battles in the Civil War. I wanted to mold fictional characters with real ones and fill the stories with romance, suspense, intrigue, and the excitement of battle. That’s how the Battles of Destiny series came to be.” –Al Lacy

4 out of 5 stars I would have given it 5 stars if 150 pages were cut...........2006-09-15

I loved this book but it just seemed to go on and on and on. I almost didn't buy it because it was so thick and I like to read a book in 1 or 2 days (Otherwise, I'm up all night reading). But I decided to give it a try because the plot sounded so great and the reviews on here were encouraging. Virginia was a wonderful character and contrary to other reviews, I thought her falling for the enemy only too easy to believe esp. after the husband she had before. If Ms. Feather had cut out the witch part and whiddled down the colony storyline, I think this book would have been the better for it. It was almost as though she had so many ideas and try to cram all of them into one book. They didn't add to the character development or the story enough to warrant the extra pages. I ended up skimming through almost a quarter of the book to get to the end.
Jane Feather seems to be a hit and miss author for me. I've read two that were wonderful (this one included) and two that I couldn't even finish they were so bad. So if you are trying Ms. Feather for the first time, try this one or one of her spy novels (To Kiss a Spy) but I would skip the Bride series (very disappointing).

4 out of 5 stars Beloved Enemy - Dark Side.......2002-07-13

Jane Feather is one of my favorite authors but there are always the "Dark Side" to her stories: death, regicide, separation, death again, etc. "Beloved Enemy" was my favorite until the parting of the hero and heroine. Too much bitterness, and not enough sunshine! The English Civil War created too much darkness! I wish she would write more of sunshine and light as our own lives have enough of this. Too little was made of the Epilogue. So sad.

    4 out of 5 stars A surprise.......2001-11-09

I liked it. I didn't expect to like this book as much as i did. A lot of people don't like the dark aspect of the husband but that is really blown out of proportion. Ive seen much worse behavior from a hero or two. Anyway the story was filling. That is the only way i could describe it. Not really romantic but satisfying all the same. ginny was annoying sometimes but I still liked her. It's one of "those cold winter nights" kind of books. Makes you feel toasty.

5 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE AND WONDERFUL!.......2001-07-01

I read this book when it was first (I think) issued. I loved it. The dichotomy between the words "Beloved" and "Enemy" is developed perfectly by Jane Feather in this enthralling book. What a love story; what a pair of lovers! I am writing this years later because: (1) It was one of my favorite books at the time I read it, and (2) it seems to be getting an unfavorable rating from several reviewers, so I thought I would try to bring more balance to the negative reviews. This is a beautifully written book and the story has a depth of emotion that is missing in so many more superficial writings.

3 out of 5 stars TOO MUCH MISERY!!!!.......2001-02-10

I have read other books by Jane Feather that were very good. My favorite Vanity and Emerald Swan. But this book has too much spousal abuse and depressing description of war. I was a teenager during WWII and I can do without both. I have several of her books that I haven't read yet and am now a bit leery of her stories. I am retired and read for enjoyment, entertainment and, as most of us, to escape reality. If I wanted this I could subscribe to a paper or watch CNN. I will perserve though as I can always use them for trading if I can't take anymore.

The premise of the story and the characters were strong and commendable. With all that I really appreciated Alex Marshall and what he was going through. Shades of our own Civil War with torn families.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Josh Winslow Turns the Corner.......2003-09-29

The Beloved Enemy picks up where The Pilgrim Song left off...a nice smooth transition. Hannah and Clint are newlyweds, and Josh just is about to get out of prison. Most of the story centers around Joshua's return to his family and his transformation to being a productive member of society, and eventually a believer. You get to see how he responds to two love interests from his past life, Dora, and a college classmate Diana Welles, the niece of his favorite professor, with whom he travels to Egypt to start an archaeological dig. He shows a lot of character and doesn't give in to any of the desires of his past. You also see his growing relationship with the young Jewish woman he met by accident on the road, how she saved him from getting killed by a group of thieves in an abandoned barn.

Kefira Reis, who worked in New York with an abusive boss, whose brother is in prison, and her mother passes away from illness, left New York to start a new life for herself in Florida. Along the way, she encounters Josh being attacked by a group of goons in an old abandoned barn. She packs a pistol and frightens them off...and nurses Joshua until he can get home safely.

From Kefira, Josh and the Winslow family gains an appreciation of Jewish culture and food, and through Joshua, Kefira begins to learn the truth about who God is, and she helps Josh rediscover his calling and his love for ancient history. As Josh accompanies Kefira back to New York to visit her brother in prison, he goes to visit his professor and arranges the trip for both himself and Kefira to go to Egypt with the professor. While there, their personal journey toward knowing God and His will for both of their lives and relationship is completed in the celebration of a major historical discovery.

I thought it was a fantastic book. Morris continues to do a great job of writing entertaining historical fiction with a spiritual truth to it. This book touches your spirit like all the rest. All the main characters consistently follow from the previous book and are well-developed. I hope that Morris continues the Winslow series for at least a few more years.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christian read.......2001-07-23

I rarely read Christian fictions but I must accept that this one is different from other Christian books I read. Despite no sensual scene, this is a thrilling yet beautiful love story that strengthens my faith in God. If you want an escape from sex and violence, I would highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Christian fiction, don't miss this 1.......2001-03-07

This book was very great for Christian fiction lovers. If you haven't read Christian books I recommend this one. Al Lacy is so talented in storytelling. As I read this book I really felt the air of war though there was a touch of God.

5 out of 5 stars Fighting, Romance what a pair!.......2000-05-03

I thought this book is actually pretty good. I liked it because of its thorough kind of description. Very complete! Besides, it wasn't anything scary. It has a couple places of romance. But it has a good deal of fighting. This story is based during the Civil War. I soldier named Buck who falls in love with a girl named Jenny. The problem is that Buck was a Northern soldier and that Jenny was a Southern spy. When they both got to know each other they fell in love. Their love was so great that the two were almost inseperable. But, Jenny's father won't hear of her daughter getting married to Buck. For one thing he was a Northerner for the other, his social status was not high. Why Jenny is a spy is because her father works as the president's kinda mission worker. But Mr. Lincoln doesn't know that the father is a spy. So, the story is in kind of a suspense. I really recomend this book to those people that are obsessed with Civil War, adventure, fighting and romance.

I think I'm in the minority on this one, it was a pleasant enough read, but having read Sharon Kay Penman's When Christ and His Saints Slept and Time & Chance, this book pales in comparison. One thing to point out, this book is FICTION and should not be considered historically correct.

I would have given four stars instead of three, but some of the sex I felt to be not only gratuitous, but in poor taste, particularly the bit about Eleanor's uncle and the author's supposition about Becket's feelings about Henry. Yuck. In my opinion those scenes did not contribute to the story -- I reseached online a bit and found no historical notations beyond the slightest whiff of an unfounded rumour (and generally dismissed by historians) about the uncle.

The book is out of print, but was readily available at my local library -- which I must add -- King County, WA Library Systems you ROCK. I search my books and put holds online, and no matter what library in the county the book is at it comes to MY library for me to pick up.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm going CRAZY w/out #3!.......2004-11-30

Ellen Jones "hooked" me with Fatal Crown and Beloved Enemy, and at the end of Beloved Enemy, she writes "To Be Continued..." I've exhausted every resource I can think of to find this elusive continuation to no avail. Does anyone know its title? It isn't merely the story of Eleanor and Henry that has me hooked, but the wonderful richness of Jones' characters. She creates characters with whom I can empathize regardless of whether it is a "she" or "he," royal or penniless, I feel as tho' I'm there beside him or her and realizing events equally. (The occasional romp in bed doesn't hurt either.) If anyone knows of the 3rd book in this series, pls. post the info! thanks.

    4 out of 5 stars Where's the next part?.......2004-06-29

At the end of this book the author states that she's working on a sequel. Where is it? The book leaves off before Henry II banishes Eleanor. That's a pretty important part of both Henry and Eleanor's story.

    Aaagh!

5 out of 5 stars I agree, Please Ellen, WRITE........2002-07-20

Fatal Crown and Beloved Enemy bring to life people, times and places that we can normally only experience through dry facts.
Ellen's novels actually made those facts believable.
Fantastic writing and I have not given up hope on the third of them. I can't wait to read Ellen's spin on Eleanor and her sons running amok on Henry and or Thomas.

5 out of 5 stars CHARACTERS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH!!.......1999-02-25

I am a British history buff! I read everything about the British Isles, history and fiction. I loved the Fatal Crown and after finishing it (nothing good lasts forever) I immediately began to read Beloved Enemy, which I also enjoyed to the max. I'm eagerly awaiting the third installment of the series and hoping there would be a fourth one (After all, the Plantagenets could fill many volumes). Please, Ellen Jones, WRITE, WRITE!!! I love your books!
